About the character designs and the movie posters

1. A girl asked whether the "horn" on Ran's head is a bone. Gosho laughed and said that it's not a bone, it's just the hair style. He also emphasized that Ran wouldn't be Ran if she didn't have the "horn" on her head. And Conan wouldn't be Conan if he didn't have the hair strands that gone straightened up at the back of his head.

2. About the origin of Shinichi's birthday (May 4), Gosho said that it's the day that Holmes and Prof. Moriarty died at Reichenbach Fall, which would make it look like Shinichi is the reincarnation of Holmes, however, Holmes never actually died...

3. Gosho said that when he designs the characters and draws the manga, the principle that he sticks to is: Boys must look handsome and girls must look cute (男の子はカツコよく、女の子は可愛く). He always reminds himself to think and draw seriously.

4. Gosho draws the movie posters, but the texts on the side are not written by him.

About ShinRan

I (the poster) helped a friend ask this: Shinichi has already confessed to Ran back in London. What will their development in the future be, will they have a kissing scene like Takagi and Sato ?

Gosho answered that there'll definitely be a development, he wasn't sure how much he should spoil, but he said that we can expect the "kiss" thing, there will be that part.

About Kaitou Kid and Magic Kaito

1. Basically Gosho said that there is a reason behind Kid and Shinichi's resemblance and he purposely made it like that. That reason may be brought up in the future if he has the chance to draw, but maybe not if he's too busy.

2. A fan asked that: In "Magic Kaito" where Kaitou Kid is the main character, the first Kid (Toichi) was killed by a mysterious organization. Kaitou Kid both find the "Pandora" and hunt the enemies who killed his father at the same time. But in the "Mystery Train" arc, Kid showed up to help Conan. Will Kaitou Kid's story be relevant to the Black Organization because of this ?

Gosho said because that was a special case, so [he] let Kid appeared and have an encounter with the organization. However, Kid has his own story plot, which may be developed in "Magic Kaito", so Kaitou Kid will probably not have any intersection with the BO in the future.

He also said that he really wants to draw MK, at least one volume per year, but since he's too busy with Conan's releases, especially with the "Mystery Train" thing, he never had the time.

About the Black Organization

1. Gosho said that after Amuro there'll also be a new member/new members. Even though he didn't say clearly, but it seems that there won't be only one.

2. A fan asked: All BO members have alcoholic code-names. Does Gosho like alcohols ? Will his most favorite alcohol be The Boss' code-name ?

Gosho said he doesn't really drink, he just picked up the alcoholic names that he thinks are cool. The cool code-names are almost used up now, maybe there's only Whiskey or something... left. [Black Demon: I find this strange because Rye and Bourbon are already whiskeys.]

The Boss doesn't need to have a code-name because (he/she) is the "boss", of course the member's code-names are all come up by The Boss.

3. A fan asked whether Gosho has already come up with the name and character design/setting for The Boss ?

Gosho gave out an ambiguous statement: The Boss has already been come up with/has already appeared; the name also has already been come up with/has already appeared. But which option is the correct understanding, everyone has their own opinion.

However, Gosho stated that it's not Agasha Hiroshi, to which the audiences clap enthusiastically.

4. A girl asked about the "Sherry naked" thing, that why does Gin always think about her without clothes, what exactly is their relationship ?

Gosho answered that they indeed had a relationship, but it wouldn't be interesting if (he) revealed it there, so please wait for it. The poster also mentioned that Gosho had a trolling (or something like that) laugh/smile at the time.

5. From what I (BD) understand here is that a fan asked why Gosho didn't name Amuro directly after Tohru Furuya but had to use a character that has the same pronunciation (透 vs. 徹). Gosho said that it would be too obvious if he did that. [Except it's still very obvious :P ]

6. A fan asked whether there will be a special story that Gosho wants to write next year (Conan's 20th anniversary) ?

Gosho said that he wants to write a BIG case that involves the organization. However, he said that he "wants to write", so...

About the ending

The poster asked about the ending and Gosho's answer is basically the same as in the past: It may not end just yet, but he also said that doesn't mean (Conan) doesn't have any ending. [So what I understand here is that there may or may not be a ending, and Gosho is also not certain about when will he write the end either.]

Plot and Black Organization

When/how/did the boss of the Black Organization appear? Sources 1,6,7, report Gosho said the boss has appeared in some form a "long time ago", but Gosho may have implied the boss could have appeared "recently". Contrast with Source 5 who does not report the part of the answer that the boss has appeared recently. Q: Has the boss appeared? A: He has. Long ago, recently, I wonder when?/I wonder if he appeared long ago or recently (laughs)) The different sources extracted different meanings from this statement. One of the sources (which one?) thought Gosho was taunting, so the phrase may be misunderstood. Source 5 notes Gosho was being vague about what form the boss appeared in. (Current manga chapter is 883) It is mentioned again the boss is not Agasa. (Source 1,5,6,7) Gosho declined to answer a question if the boss's face has appeared (Source 1,7)

Someone asked about relative bust sizes. Gosho said Kazuha's breasts are smaller than Ran's. A: Didn't I announce it already? (omission) Amuro is 29 and that Iori [Muga]guy is 30, right? So he's about that same age. He is 31 or 32 years old.

Q6: Do Rye and Bourbon really dislike each other?

Q8: What about [character] settings in the movies and manga? Are they the same or are they different?

A: I'd like to say that they're the same but they're contradicitng themselves in some spots... Sorry but I can't give you a short answer. Well! The movies are the movies and the manga is the manga.

Q9: It's about Haneda Kouji.

A: Yikes!

Q10: In the manga he's written as "Haneda" but in the anime is name's ruby reads "Hada" in the anime. What does that mean?

A: That's a mistake from their part. I forgot to tell them. Kouji comes from Tanigawa Kouji (a real-world shogi player).

(T/N: "ruby" is term to refer to the furigana or the "reading" of kanji. Instead of "Haneda" it say "Hada" since they accidentally ommitted the "ne" in "Haneda". Thanks to Fujiwara for pointing this out!)

Q11: What male characters are good at cooking?

A: Amuro is good. Akai learnt from Yukiko and has gotten better but his stew could be improved. I guess Amuro's the one who's more skilled at cooking.

Q12: What's the inspiration for the Night Baron? Is it the "Red Baron" in which Akai and Char were based upon?

A: Red Baron?

Q13: It was famous in America as...

A: No, that's not it. The inspiration is Edogawa Ranpo's "Golden Mask".

Q14: Will Amuro have a tragic end?

A: Dunno. Can't answer that right now.

Q15: Akai dated Akemi when he was infiltrating the BO, but did Amuro do something like that?

A: He's not doing that right now.

Q17: Haibara didn't get to show much up in Episode One! Are you planning to make an "Episode Two" in which we'll see when she shrunk?

A: Have no plans to do so right now. LOL. But it got very positive reviews so maybe there'll be something like it in the future.

A: When did he get to know, I wonder? I'd like to know, too. If only I had a chance to write an episode about that...

Q21: What car did you use to come here today?

A: An RX-7. I used it as model to come up with Sato's car. In the anime it's red but it's black in the manga. Amuro has this car, too. It'd seem that police cars can't be so flashy. Actually... I was kidding about that of the car's colors!

(Edit: I checked it up on the manga and it's written that Sato's car IS red... Gosho, you got me with your wording!!)

Q22: What about Akai and Jodie's relationship? When did they start hanging out? Did either of them confess to the other?

A: It's a secret. Enjoy it when I publish about it, if I get to.

Q23: Do you plan on Kazami appearing in the manga?

A: Who? Kazami? Do you like the guy?

Q24: Because Amuro doesn't have any allies.

A: But maybe that's what makes him cool, instead? Maybe you'll get to see Kazami again...? Look forward to it!

Q25: Have you planned where Heiji will confess at? You seem to focus on that a lot in the [Shonen] Sunday as of late?

A: You're going to ask THAT? It's obvious that I won't tell you, isn't it? It's a secret.

Q26: Are there any scene in Episode One which you influenced?

A: That scene with Korn. Other scenes (apart from that where Shinichi, Ran and Sonoko go to Sonoko's house) were influenced by me, too. I also decided on that scene with Akai.

Q27: What do you use as inspiration for the girls' clothes?

A: Various women buy those clothes. I used "JJ" or "anan" as reference before.

Q28: Who told you about the Chuubu earthquake?

A: I was sleeping and one of my assistants woke me up. I was surprised that the TV said "Beika City" when reporting the earthquake.

Q29: Will Okita show up in the next movie?

A: He won't. But maybe he'll show up in the manga. Since he's in the same high-school as Momiji.

Q30: Which poem of the "Hyakunin Isumi" do you like?

A: "Chihayafuru"!

Q31: Will Takagi and Sato marry?

A: I'd like for them to marry.

Q32: Kudo Shinichi, Akai Shuuichi, Kuroba Touichi. Are characters with the "ichi" (one) Kanji in their names relevant? What about [Furuya] Rei? And Heiji's "ji"?

A: In Touichi's case I wanted Mr.Ikeda to be his VA. Akai is Ikeda. Shinichi comes from Hoshi Shinichi. Furuya Rei's "Rei" is unrelated. Heiji is also unrelated.

Q33: Is there a love episode for Haibara?

A: She likes that soccer player. She's attracted to him.

Q34: In the "Visual Book" it says that Shinichi... was born in the US? And that he lives in the US?

A: Tha'ts wrong. He's born in Japan.

Q35: There are a lot of "strong types" amongst the female characters, do you like that type of character?

A: I like "tsunderes".

Q36: Who was Haibara speaking to in Episode One? Is there any meaning to the scene?

A: There's none. It won't be brought up.

Q37: What's Gin in-org rank?

A: Pretty high. It's within your ten fingers.

A: Movie 21 was decided by the staff. Movie 20 was decided by me. They decided the title "Darkest" while I choose "Nightmare".

Q40: In the "sakura" case it'd seem that Yukiko had met Ran before, but is that truly Shinichi's and Ran's first encounter?

A: It is the first encounter. I'm considering whether I should depict Yukiko's and Ran's first meeting.

A: In the upcoming [Shounen] Sunday. It'll be very cool.

Q19: In Visual Book there’s written that Shinichi-kun is America resident, was he born in America? Or Japan?

A: Eh? America? Is it written there? That’s probably a mistake. He was _probably_ born in Japan.

Q20: Among all girl characters in Meitantei Conan, I feel like there are a lot of strong-willed women, err… does Aoyama-sensei love this type? Or is this unintentional?

A: I love ‘tsundere’ type! My favourite. Of course I like cute ones too.

Q21: Kudo Shinichi, Akai Shuichi, Kuroba Toichi, all important characters has ‘ichi’ in their names. And Chiba-san’s first name was not his seiyu’s, the 'one’ is changed to 'wa’.

A: Aa, you noticed! Sorry. And if you want more details, I wanted Toichi to be voiced by Ikeda Shuichi, so he was named Toichi, who gave him the voice. Akai Shuichi goes without saying. Shinichi is a little different. He was named after Hoshi Shinichi-san.

Audience: What about Furuya-san’s Rei and Heiji’s 'Ji’? Has it meanings of numbers?

A: It have nothing to do with numbers.

Q22: I love Miyano Shiho the best, at Episode ONE’s start scene in laboratory, when Sherry was talking with somebody on the phone while looking at the computer screen, is her opponent someone important?

Q: The next movie title is normally read in English (write as "kobushi" and read as "fist"); but this time it's read normally (written as "dangan" and read as it is). Is there some reason?
Aoyama: Sakurai-san, the scriptwriter, asked "How about "The Scarlet Bullet (dangan)"?
And we said "well, let's go with it" and decided on it at once (laughs)

And now that it's been decided nobody will suddenly say "let's use "bullet" instead".

Q: Among the dishes that Yukiko-san taught Akai-san (Okiya-san), are there others that he's mastered apart from the curry, stew and the meat and potatoes that have been shown in the manga?
Aoyama: There might be (laughs) He's pretty good at stews, after all (laughs)
His usual trick is "I made too much food so I brought it (to the Agasa home)"

Q: Regarding the teaser poster for "Black Iron Submarine", in the rough drawing stage, Kuroda and Rum are depicted in the current position of Akai and Amuro, and there were some faces that looked like Inspector Shiratori and Detective Sato, but are they really important enough to be depicted in the original teaser? Also, why do the members of the organization have one eye closed or hidden in the final version of the poster?
Aoyama: That's right. When I first drew it, I thought there were too many characters (laughs), and I thought it would be too much of a hassle (laughs), so I narrowed it down. At first I drew Kuroda and Rum, but I thought that Akai and Amuro should take those prominent positions. Also, the inclusion of Professor (Agasa) was at the director's request. When I added Professor in as a request, Director Tachikawa replied, "Thank you very much for including him." Well, the thing about keeping one eye closed is that back then, keeping one eye closed was pretty popular (laughs), but it doesn't mean that much (laughs).

Q: Back when Yukiko disguised Conan as Ai, Conan thought to Yukiko's disguise, "Come to think of it, the Haibara disguise was good, too!" (Detective Conan Volume 85), is there any reason for that?
Aoyama: No, not really (laughs) He was just thinking about how much they looked alike (laughs) I just wrote this line as a little excuse (laughs)

Q: What was it like when Furuya and Kazami first met?

Q. Please tell us how Kazami spend his days off, other than with Yoko-chan.

MC: Every year, you say you love Ran-chan, you love romance stories, and you love lovey-dovey stuff.

Aoyama: I used Tottori dialect in one of my works before, but I was told it was incomprehensible. (haha) Osaka dialect, Hakata dialect, etc. are pretty easy to understand, but Tottori dialect is hard. If we did do a Tottori movie, I’d want to have people speaking Tottori dialect, right… so… (haha) I’d have to find some kind of solution. I’ll think about it. (haha)

Q. [Per a previous question] you said that Momiji will do her best even now that Heiji-kun and Kazuha have gotten together, but will her butler Iori continue to stay by her side? Will he have to leave perhaps because of issues related to his old job?

Aoyama: Ah… no, well, I think he’ll be by her side forever. I think he’ll stay by her side until the day Momiji dies. (haha) I think he’ll keep protecting her.

Q. I’d like to ask about Conan cafés. I know that you love curry rice, but is there anything else you’d like to eat at a Conan café?

Q. Did you meet in advance with aiko-san to plan for the moment where you shot her with a tranquilizer watch? Aoyama: We had a lot of meetings about that! At first, I uh asked whether I should say “Funya?”, but that was shot down. (haha) [T/N: I don’t know enough about aiko to say what “Funya?” might mean. Maybe a catchphrase?]

Questioner: I’m a aiko-san fan so I’ve gone to a fair number of her concerts, so I’ve watched the video of her song on Kōhaku Uta Gassen. Did any murder cases come to mind after seeing aiko-san?

Aoyama: Ah, well, hahaha. No, I can’t say any did. (haha) Do you want to see one? (haha) I’d feel too bad to kill off a singer, but, well, I’ll think about it a plot that would have a singer involved. (haha) aiko-san was very cute.

Q. Since Akai-san was raised in England, were there any sports he was forced to play aside from Jeet Kune Do?

Q. I live in Kurayoshi. The Kurayoshi phone number area code is fairly important in your work, but what kind of role will Kurayoshi play in Conan in the future?

Aoyama: Ah… no, it’s just a coincidence. (haha) Kurayoshi, well… Kurayoshi residents would get mad at me, so. (haha) It would be difficult to use the city. (haha) It’s just a coincidence, I apologize. (haha)

Q. Do you have any New Year’s memories from when you were little?

Aoyama: Memories? Usually my family would ask me to visit a shrine with them, but I’d stay at home since it was too much of a pain. Q. I’d like to know about Kyoto’s Inspector Ayanokouji’s personal life. Please tell me his hobbies, or what he does in his spare time.

Aoyama: Ah… (haha) Maybe he feeds Maro-chan and such. (haha)

Aoyama: Hobbies? (haha) He loves Maro-chan, so that. (haha) Hey, what do you think would be good?

MC: The theatrical film Detective Conan: The Fallen Angel of the Highway is scheduled for nationwide release on April 10 this year. Could you share any comments within what you’re allowed to say?

Aoyama: Well… these guys will be very active (laughs).

Aoyama: There are scenes like this (laughs). And what else… Yokohama… I think there’ll be lots of moments that people from Kanagawa will really enjoy. I can’t say too much though (laughs). These guys too—Matsuda and Hagiwara—will appear. They show up in flashbacks, and in a really nice way. I’ll be drawing the key animation myself again, so please look forward to it. What else am I allowed to say… (laughs) There’s romance-comedy in it too!

And then—Aoyama-sensei had a surprise present for everyone!

MC: Some of you here may already know this, but… Aoyama-sensei has prepared a gift for everyone!

Q: The setting of the next movie is Yokohama, and since I live there, I’m really happy about it. How do you decide on the setting?

Aoyama: Well, it depends on the character… This time, when I decided to feature Chihaya, it just felt like Yokohama was the right choice. It really depends on which character I’m using. Do you live in Yokohama?

Questioner (hereafter “Q”): Yes!

Aoyama: That’s great. A lot of things will show up—so look forward to it.

Q: Why does Ran’s hair stick up like that?

Aoyama: Ahahahaha (laughs).

Aoyama: Well, you see—at first it wasn’t sticking up, but little by little, I thought about giving her a distinctive feature. I wanted people to be able to tell, no matter who drew her, “That’s Ran,” so I added it.

MC (hereafter "MC"): That’s something unique to manga, isn’t it?

Aoyama: Yes, exactly.

Q: Do you have any tips for drawing?

Aoyama: Tips for drawing? (laughs) Well, at first, the best thing is to copy the drawings of manga artists or illustrators you like. And from there, you gradually turn it into your own style. Do your best.

Q: How have you been able to keep going for 30 years?

Aoyama: Well, it’s really because fans give me such positive feedback. That encourages me and keeps me motivated to keep going.

Q: Which culprit is your favorite, Aoyama-sensei?

Aoyama: Culprit!?! (laughs)

Aoyama: Well, that was me, actually… What do I start with? Hmm… I often go with uni.

MC: Uni!

Aoyama: Uni, and also… things that spoil easily (laughs). Like ikura.

MC: Those are expensive ones.

Aoyama: And I finish with toro.

MC: They’re all pricey ones (laughs).

Aoyama: No, no, no (laughs). I eat squid and things like that too.

Q: Taka'aki-san was really wonderful in last year’s movie. Will his bangs be blowing in the wind in the manga again in the future?

Q: In a recent movie (Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram), it was revealed that Kid and Shinichi are blood-related. Since when had you been thinking about that setting, Aoyama-sensei?

Aoyama: Ah—quite a long time ago.
I had already decided that Toichi and Yusaku would be brothers, so… quite a while—really, a long time ago (laughs). I might have even told my assistants before, like, “Actually, this is how it is…” (laughs).

Questioner: Sorry—personally, that ending really surprised me…

Aoyama: Ah, I see. Yes, that’s understandable. I’d been thinking about it for quite some time, but I never really found the right moment to say it. Then this movie felt like the perfect opportunity, so I revealed it there. But the idea itself goes back quite a long way.

Q: Could you tell us Heiji-kun’s and Kazuha-chan’s birthdays?

Aoyama: Well—(laughs) I don’t know yet (laughs). I haven’t decided them. I’ll probably choose suitable dates when that kind of topic comes up in the story (laughs).

MC: You get questions about birthdays and blood types every year, don’t you?

Aoyama: As for Kazuha-chan, maybe her name comes from a model of sorts… My assistant’s wife is named Kazuha, so I might take it from her (laughs).

Q: You mentioned earlier that you usually don’t reveal characters’ birthdays, but recently Aoko-chan’s birthday was decided. Why was that?

Aoyama: Just… somehow (laughs). I felt like, “Maybe I’ll decide it now,” and so I did (laughs). Kaito’s birthday is already set, after all. Oh—and Shinichi’s too, come to think of it (laughs).

MC: So it was decided on a whim—just a sudden inspiration?

Aoyama: I thought, “Yeah, that works!” and decided it (laughs).

Q: Detective Conan has many elements that are closely connected to alcohol. Among the characters, who do you think is the strongest drinker, and who is the weakest?

Q: If there are any Magic Kaito episodes you’ve been wanting to draw, or ideas you’ve been saving up, could you tell us?

Aoyama: Magic Kaito? Well, of course—a dance party (laughs).

Questioner: Eh?! I want to see that!

Aoyama: You want to see it?

Questioner: I do!

Aoyama: Well… if the editorial department allows it, I’ll draw it (laughs). I don’t know when that’ll be, though (laughs).

Questioner: My daughter really loves Taka'aki, and because of her influence, I (as her father) ended up liking him too.

Aoyama: Ohhh~

Questioner: She didn’t get selected this time, so only I was able to come… (laughs)

Aoyama: Ahahahaha (laughs)

Questioner: She told me, “Make sure you ask this,” so I brought a question related to Taka'aki…

Q: There’s a novel (Manga) written by a classmate called “2-A Class, Komei-kun!” (from Detective Conan Volumes 65–66). Do you have any plans to turn that into a manga someday?

Aoyama: Eh—? (laughs) I hadn’t really thought about that (laughs). But if it’s something that worries you that much…

Questioner: Apparently, that part really bothers her.

Aoyama: Eh—seriously? (laughs) Well, I don’t really know… whether I’ll do it or not… well… (laughs). Please give my regards to your daughter (laughs).

Q: At the 2019 Let’s Talk DAY event, you mentioned that you were planning to draw the story of how Hagi and Jinpei first met as children—and ever since then, I’ve been waiting—this whole time!

Questioner: How much longer do we need to wait?

Aoyama: Well, well—please wait a little longer (laughs). It only just came up recently, after all (laughs).

Questioner: Alright, I’ll wait. Thank you very much!

Aoyama: I see, their childhood, huh… yes, yes, yes (laughs).

Q: Around what age did Furuya-san start living on his own for the first time?

Aoyama: Huh? Living alone?

Questioner: Yes.

Aoyama: Hmm… well… he didn’t really have much parental supervision at all, did he?

Questioner: Right.

Aoyama: I think it was probably pretty early—maybe right after graduating high school… Or possibly even during high school? I’m really thinking hard about it right now… (laughs). I imagine he was already living on his own as a high school student, and maybe inviting Hiro over and things like that.
