MISIA (ミーシャ Mīsha), born on July 7, 1978 in Omura, Nagasaki, is a Japanese singer-songwriter. She became famous in the late 1990s after the release of her debut album Mother Father Brother Sister, which became the seventh most sold debut album in Japanese music history.
Biography
MISIA was reportedly born under the name Misaki Ito (伊藤 美咲) in Omura City, Nagasaki Prefecture, to a Ryukyuan mother. Both parents were doctors at the NHO Nagasaki Medical Center in Omura but decide to move to Tsushima Island when MISIA was four years old, where she would grow up until she turned 14[2],[3],[4]. She was surrounded by music since her young age[5]. She however felt that there was not enough resources for learning music on Tsushima and moved to Fukuoka at age 14 to take music lessons in the hopes of becoming a singer[6]. In 1997, she was scouted by a musical agency and then moved to Tokyo[7].
She made her debut with her single Tsutsumikomu Yō ni... in early 1998, released with label BMG Japan, which quickly sold out, paving way for her rapid success[8]. Her stage name is a portmanteau of "Messiah" and "Asia".
