Hikaru Hinohara (桧原 ひかる Hinohara Hikaru?) is a character in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. A housemaid for the rich doctor Hakuya Torakura, she is one of the prime suspects in the Vampire Mansion Case, but remains cooperative with Heiji and Conan.

Background

Hinohara's keyhole appearance.

Hikaru Hinohara is a young housemaid working for Hakuya Torakura in his lavish western-style brick mansion in the outskirts of Tokyo, along the border with Gunma and Saitama Prefectures. She is originally thought to be a child from Yoko Hinohara's first marriage, before she met Hakuya and married him[1]. She thus saw Hakuya many times as a child and was brought to the mansion to live with him and her mother, where she met the rest of the Torakura siblings[2]. A few years prior, while she was hospitalized at Torakura General Hospital due to her weak constitution, her mother died in what she thinks is an accident[3], although this would later be revealed to be murder. Hakuya paid her hospital bills and to repay him a favor, she decided to work for him as a housekeeper[3]. Following her mother's death, she moved out of the mansion, but Hakuya continued gifting her clothes[2]. However, the real reason she decided to become a housekeeper was that after she graduated from university, she could not find a job six months prior to the timeline[3]. Around then, she received a letter from Hakuya proposing her to come work at the mansion and she accepted, needing to find employment[3]. Since she recently started, she says that she often mixes up while working, having no prior experience[3]. She works alongside Rikushige Koga, the head butler, at least two other housemaids and several kitchen staff[4]. She took the job opening created by Shimizu's death a few months prior. It is revealed at the end of the case she appears in that she is Hakuya's biological daughter, meaning that she becomes his sole legitimate heir. It is unknown what she does following the murder case with her newly inherited fortune.

Personality

She is described by Rikushige Koga as a cheery person and well-loved by all the staff, despite her inexperience and her tendencies to be clumsy. She also willfully answers Heiji and Conan's questions and is hard-working, never talking back to the family. She keeps her smile despite the family not liking her. Her cheery personality is also supported by the fact she has no filter, like when she admitted to being hungry and eating Ran and Kazuha's gyoza without their permission.

Appearance

Hinohara is a short slender woman with black medium-length hair tied in a hair bun for her work. She has dark eyes and a notable fang-like canine tooth. She is shown wearing a traditional English-style maid uniform, with a white mob cap, a dark turtleneck shirt with a pendant in the middle and a white apron.

Plot overview

Following Heiji, Kogoro, Conan, Otaki, Ran and Kazuha's arrival at the Torakura mansion to investigate former housemaid Shimizu's death at head butler Rikushige Koga's request, they are served dinner at the mansion, along with the other members of the family. Hinohara arrives in the dining room and asks the family if they were ready for the food to be brought out, as they still seemed to be talking. They acquiesce her and ask her to bring it, but not without making a snide remark at her status as a child from Hakuya's fiancée's first marriage, to which she seems to pay no heed to. She remains close to the guests while dinner is ongoing, making sure everyone is satisfied. As Hakuya was not showing up to eat his meal,Kamiyo Torakura and her lover Johei Hagawa sent Ran and Kazuha to fetch him, but they screamed, seeing him dead disguised as a vampire inside his casket shaped bed. As everyone runs to his room to check on him, they stay there for a while, so Hinohara arrives at the room sometime later to ask the guests if they wanted their food reheated. As the master was still missing, Koga dispatched Hikaru and the other staff to look for him. She later regroups with Conan's group and tells them they have not found him yet.

Trying to find Ran and Kazuha, Heiji and Conan stumble upon Hinohara and decide to ask her about her backstory after hearing the Torakura siblings talk about her mother's relationship with Hakuya Torakura. They do not find the two girls, nor do they find the chefs, and Hinohara explains that they are probably eating their dinner and that she should be joining them, but that since she was looking for Hakuya, she ended up missing her dinner. After her explanations, Hinohara returns to the dining room to serve the Torakura siblings tea, since they received a text message from Hakuya asking them to reconvene there to meet him. She yells after seeing Hakuya's grimly-looking head peering through the windows. After they see blood dripping from the roof, Heiji and Conan rush over and find Asanobu Torakura's body. Hinohara follows them closely behind. Koga then explains the legend behind the Torakura family and the lord impaler. Hinohara wonders how this links with vampires and Mina Torakura explains that Bram Stoker wrote Dracula based off of the real historical figure Vlad the Impaler. Koga then brings them to the torture room mentioned in the legend and Hinohara now understands where this room was, as Hakuya had asked her this morning to meet him there and she could not find the torture room. Conan asks her why she could not have asked Koga to help her find it and Hinohara says Hakuya wrote in the text message not to talk to others about it. Heiji and Conan later confine the suspects in the dining room so no else gets killed and ask Hinohara to let them know if anything happens. However, Heiji and Conan's suspicions about Hinohara grow following Koga's confidences and revelations that Yoko Hinohara might have been killed by members of the Torakura family. They decide to chase after her since they think she might have had ulterior motives when getting the job. At the same time, a famished Hinohara stares at Ran and Kazuha with intent. Conan and Heiji, thinking she might do something bad to the girls, rush over to the kitchen, only to find her munching on the girls' freshly cooked gyoza, which she apologizes for. This lowers Conan and Heiji's suspicion of her. Later, she alerts them that a new body has been found, that of Kamiyo.

Following the discovery of Kamiyo's body and the suspects' decision to disperse and not stay in the dining room, Hinohara decides to stick with the young detectives and wonders if Heiji is an assistant of Kogoro, which he is forced to pretend like he is for the time being by Conan. He then hands her his towel from running in the rain to the body so it can be washed. Knowing that Heiji is an experienced detective, she confides in him that when she saw Hakuya's head earlier, she saw that originally, under the curtain, it was upright, but when the curtains were pulled, it was upside down, and she wanted them to figure that out for her. This makes them realize the truth behind the trick. She later fills them in on the relationships between the siblings and reveals that she sent every one of them an email when she started working at the mansion and Heiji and Conan realize when Hakuya wanted her to go to the torture room to meet, he sent it by email. Later, Hinohara brings refreshments to the family members. Later, Hinohara receives a new message from Hakuya and figures she must meet him after all. However, she is stopped by Koga. She ends up still going to the dark torture room and is taken by surprise by a mysterious figure, who is taken down by Ran. This was in fact a fake Hinohara, who was Kazuha in disguise and the real one had been hidden safely. The real culprit is in fact Johei Hagawa, who intercepted Hakuya's message intended for Hinohara and carried Hakuya's murder plan for him. Hakuya committed suicide to make the plan possible and he wanted Hinohara to take revenge on those who killed Yoko. However, Hagawa took advantage of this and killed Kamiyo and Asanobu to secure his share of the inheritance by marrying Mina after he would have killed Hinohara. This is why she only received the message later and could not get to the torture room. After Hagawa is captured, it is revealed that Hinohara is Hakuya's daughter.

Relationships analysis

Hakuya Torakura

Despite many of the other staff describing Hakuya as a strict master, she does not feel the same way, saying that he has not scolded her and she feels even more respect for him because he paid for her hospital bills and her surgery many years ago. This is because he deeply cares for her because she is his daughter and he spread rumors that he did not like her to others like Koga so they do not find out the truth. He loved her so much he crafted a murder plot for her to carry out to avenge her mother, but left a note at the end so it is up to her to do it or not. Heiji and Conan theorize that with her good-natured personality, she most likely would not have carried it out.

Yoko Hinohara

Hikaru lived with her mother prior to her mother's death and did not live with her father, although Hakuya describes her as looking like her father[5]. However, this is not true and only a deflection from Hakuya, who saw Hikaru as a spitting image of Yoko. Following her mother's death, it is unknown with whom she lived with after.

Other members of the Torakura family

Hinohara is looked at coldly by many members of the Torakura family since her arrival at the mansion as a housemaid, many seeing her as potentially threatening their stake in Hakuya's inheritance. They however do not care as much, thinking that she is a child from before Hakuya started dating Yoko Hinohara. She however does not think much of their comments and remains diligent at her job.

Name origin

Her name, just like the names of the other employees of Torakura Mansion, is related to vampires' weaknesses[8]. Hikaru Hinohara thus comes from "sunlight" (日の光 hi no hikaru?).
