Yoshinobu Ando (安藤 義信 Andō Yoshinobu?) is a Japanese animation director and key animator. He takes part in the production of Detective Conan anime and movies.

Biography

Yoshinobu Ando was originally a member of outsourcing animation studio Neomedia (ネオメディア), founded in 1969 and shut down in 2018, working at their Higashinakano branch in Tokyo. He was first credited as an animator in 1986 in TV series The Centurions, as key animator. In the 1980s, after Mitsuo Uji (宇治 光夫) quit Neomedia to found new animation collective Studio Emu (スタジオ絵夢), Ando joined him, along with Tsutomu Oshiro (大城 勉)[1]. Studio Emu became known for its animation of robots (mecha), with fine highlights in the style of Studio Ghibli animator Akihiko Yamashita, a trademark of Ando and Oshiro. In the 1990s, Ando, Oshiro and Kenji Kuroyanagi's animation of smoke for Studio Emu was comparable to that of Mitsuo Iso from Studio Zaendo. At the 135th, "Anime Style Effect", centered on Mitsuo Iso, Yoh Yoshinari animated smoke in the style of Yoshinobu Ando. Thus, Ando became mainly active as a mecha animator. He achieved wide recognition in 1987 with Studio Emu for his participation in series Machine Robo: Battle Hackers, Metal Armor Dragonar and Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos. In the early 1990s, he was a key animator in SD Gundam Gaiden, SD Gundam MK-IV and Matchless Raijin-Oh, and later worked in the 1997-2000 anime Hikarian. While Studio Emu still exists, its presence has been more subtle since the 2010s[2].

Ando first worked with Detective Conan in 2013-2014, by becoming assistant animation director for the 18th movie Dimensional Sniper. He mainly animated scenes with action effects, similarly to his previous works as mecha animator. This would be reflected in movies 20 and 21, where he is credited as "action animation director". He continues to be active in movies, but playing only a small part as key animator. His first and only work with the main anime series is in episode 1005, which aired in May 2021, as key animation.

Ando has also collaborated with animation studios Sunrise, Tatsunoko Production and Kelmadick, among others.
