Biography

Early life

She was born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, and later moved out a few times. First to Yamaguchi, then Hiroshima, and finally to Ehime Prefecture, where she stayed through high school. These frequent relocations were due to her father's job, as he was often transferred for work.

Becoming a voice actor

As a child, she initially wanted to become a teacher, inspired by one she admired. Her interest in voice acting began in fifth grade after watching a TV program that introduced it as a profession. She was fascinated by the idea that voice actors could step into different roles and even become animals through their voices.

Despite her ambition, she didn’t actively pursue related activities in school, like joining a drama or broadcasting club. Instead, she went through her school life unsure of how to start, simply enjoying her youth.

After graduating from high school, and realizing she had to choose a path, she decided to seriously pursue voice acting. She enrolled in Yoyogi Animation Academy, then trained at the Haikyō Voice Actors Studio in 2001 as part of the 19th class. Although she struggled with acting at first, she found the experience enjoyable and stayed motivated by focusing on how to improve. The following year, in 2002, she became a member of the Haikyo agency[2].

Career

She was struggling to pass auditions but eventually got her first notable role was as Prim Snowlight in Divergence Eve.

In 2004, she played Tsutako Takeshima in Maria Watches Over Us, and later that year, she got her first lead role as Negi Springfield in Negima!, which was also her first time voicing a male character. When the anime aired on TV in 2005, it significantly boosted her recognition in the industry. From then on, she landed more roles, often voicing main characters.

In 2005, Happy☆Material, the theme song for Negima!, was awarded the Kansai Radio Award at the 10th Animation Kobe, and she performed it at the ceremony with fellow cast members.

In 2010, she joined a self-organized voice actor group called along with several other female voice actors, participating in blogs, radio shows, live events, and conventions. The group later returned to its original form as N's in 2012[3][4][5].

In 2014, She won the Best Lead Actress Award at the 8th Seiyu Awards for her role as Mikoto Misaka in the anime series A Certain Scientific Railgun. That same year, her long-running radio show, which had been on air since 2004, came to an end. Later that year, she began performing on stage with Tokyo JanKen, a theater group led by voice actress Megumi Toyoguchi. Around the same time, she was cast as Rei Hino / Sailor Mars in the reboot of Sailor Moon Crystal.

On April 21, 2017, she received the Best Female Character Voice Award at the Famitsu Awards 2016 for her role as Velvet Crowe in Tales of Berseria, among others.[6]
