Career
On August 10, 1999, Avex launched its contest "Avex Dream 2000", in the hopes of creating a popular girls group[1]. dream thus started with the three winners of the contest, Mai Matsumuro, Kana Tachibana and Yu Hasebe. The group debuted on January 1, 2000, with their single "Movin' On", which topped the Oricon charts and sold around 100,000 copies. Their first album, "Dear...", was released on February 28, 2001. Their final single with the three original members was released on June 10, 2002, following which Mai Matsumuro graduated.
In July 2002, following Matsumuro's graduation, Avex held new auditions, and six new members joined Tachibana and Hasebe: Risa Ai, Erie Abe, Aya Takamoto, Ami Nakashima, Shizuka Nishida and Sayaka Yamamoto. The eight-person group released their first single "Music Is My Thing" on February 13, 2003. Their third album was released shortly after and dream's popularity spiked again. On March 28, 2004, Risa Ai left just after the release of the fourth album "ID". In March 2007, to mark the seventh anniversary of their debut, dream renames itself to DRM.
The name change was officialized in a live show on June 25, 2007. The years following Ai's departure were not very successful, the mini-album and four digital singles released having generated few sales. On July 22, 2008, Yu Hasebe left the group as well, and DRM's contract with Avex was subsequently terminated[2]. After the group's manager pleaded with Avex to allow them to continue, the group was allowed to sign instead with LDH (Love Dream Happiness)[3]. DRM then changed its name back to Dream and its fanclubs were also closed.
On September 9, 2009, Dream released its first single since its rebranding, and went on a tour around the country, and also appeared on radio shows and on TV. In May 2010, Dream held its first live tour and on August 18, 2010, released their major debut single "My Way ~ ULala~". The final original member of the group, Kana Tachibana, graduated from Dream on February 20, 2011[4], leaving the group with only five members. In the same year, Dream joined LDH's supergroup E-girls[5]. On March 31, 2012, Sayaka Yamamoto also graduated from the unit[6]. In 2016, Dream released its first photobook, after which bandmember Erie Abe also left.
On June 5, 2017, the band announced that it will its activities[7],[8]. Dream performed for the last time at the E-girls LIVE 2017 ~ EG EVOLUTION~ event on July 16, 2017[9].
