IdentityUnknown stood off to the side, a little uncomfortable. She didn't like trusting anyone -- not immediately -- and the FBI was no exception. They often said the only difference between Canada and America was that Canadians trusted their government and Americans did not.
She also disliked the way John seemed to be picking on Nero. Aeyra seemed to be looking at him with concern and John with barely masked fury. She didn't trust him, IdentityUnknown realized, and as she looked back at John she realized that she didn't think of him as trustworthy either.
John didn't seem to notice the sense of unease in the room, or if he did, he did a pretty good job of hiding it. He gave a wide grin at Nero who scowled at him without any attempt to hide it. "Greetings, Team! Are you ready to start today?"
IdentityUnknown crossed her arms. "Hold it," she said calmly, staring at John straight in the eye. "We've accepted your hospitality, yes, and I'm sure we're all grateful for it. However, I don't think we ever agreed to do anything and we definitely are not your team. At the very least, I haven't agreed to anything. I don't know what you mean by getting started but I personally am not interested in being used. If you want to keep any of us here to do anything, you'd better explain exactly what you want us to do, why we would do it, and why we should trust you."
John gave a hearty laugh at the last part. "Why you should trust me? Why, I'm part of the FBI, young lady! Why wouldn't you trust me?"
"The more power one has, the more devious one must be, the more secrets one must hide, and the more trouble one may bring," IdentityUnknown said.
John raised an eyebrow. "Exactly where is that quote from?"
"My head," IdentityUnknown replied steadily. "Not that it matters. Now you better start explaining or our team will start leaving."
