  1. I'm not even talking about that. I just said if you sincerely love the 'other' person more than your first love, then it would make sense if you go for them.

Yes, if that's the case. But I think it's very sad when such a thing happens (when somebody gets over their first love) and I wouldn't certainly like this to happen in DC (but it's just my personal opinion; again, I don't want to sound arrogant or provoking/disrespectful).

  2. I hope that if Yoko is the boss, her young age is fake like Vermouth's. For such an organization to have a boss that young wouldn't be really impressive imo. A real boss should be experienced and hardened by past battles with crime rivals, a person still that young on top of the whole thing would disappoint me. And (just my personal tastes) I don't really like the combination "physical beauty and being attractive" + "evil", because such villains usually rely too often on seduction and making people falling in love with them, and I like when the villains are heartless and asexual.

  3. I discovered this series in 2010 or 2009 while searching on internet for information about Hayao Miyazaki's series "Future boy Conan", and found this other Conan in the results. I immediately became interested after reading it was a detective series which also contained a childhood friend romance sub-plot too, a nice combination in my opinion.

  4. Despite her being one of my favorite characters in the series, I'd have to say this is definitely annoying, and she usually only brings something up when it's suddenly relevant to Shinichi's case. It makes you almost question if she really is intent on bringing down the organization. I suppose this is probably more or less how Gosho decides to stall plot progression though.

I've noticed a genuine dislike of her character particularly from some Shin/Ran fans, but it's not as if Conan/Ai as a romantic interest will ever exist in canon. I don't see why other's thoughts on that pairing in particular should take away from her character.

I've found her character back-story and development a bit more interesting in comparison to the other characters in the series.

I agree with this. I admit I am a little biased in being too influenced by the hypothetical Conan/Ai pairing, it's just I am too sensitive about the "first love" argument, especially the "childhood" one that I consider my ideal. But by herself Ai is quite an interesting and nice character.

  5. You  sound pretty naive for a 28 year old.

Naive? Why? And even if it's true, so what?

It's not a bad idea if you love that "somebody else" even more than your first love.

I don't really want to argue about that not to sound disrespectful, but that is often a good excuse for Hollywood-actor-style womanizers. I don't respect people who change their partners often except for reasons like if they cheated, committed a serious crime etc. I don't buy the argument of "freedom" and "I just feel like changing a partner not to be bored".

  6. Bad argument. Just because some of the big things are unrealistic doesn't mean that everything should be. Would it make sense it if Shinichi suddenly learned how to fly and when fans ask why, Gosho would just go "Hey ! The series is already unrealistic hardyharhar !"

I agree that not everything should be unrealstic, but I can speak only for myself, and I think that specific kind of "non realistic" is a good thing. I mean, being forever faithful to the first love since childhood. I wish there was more of that in real life.

  7. Apart from the fact that some people want Shiho to be involved with Shinichi romantically at Ran's expenses, I don't have anything against her, would even liked her as a character quite a lot, if only those ideas of kicking out Ran and replacing her with Shiho as Shinichi's girlfriend were not so annoying. In my opinion, dumping the first love for somebody else is always a bad idea.

  8. Sorry, really. I apologize. I was and still am an immature child dislike Ran-like girls because of a personal experience. Honestly, I apologize. It's not the childhood romance I dislike them from, I have nothing against childhood romances. It's Ran I had a problem with.

She has the right to fight for it, sure, but getting angry isn't the part of it. It's Shinichi's life, and it didn't belong to her in any way.

Again, I'm sorry. I honestly wish I can start over again. But for now, I apologize. Really, sorry. To all Ran fans.

Don't worry, no need for apologies, you are entitled to your opinion. It's just I am too biased towards first love romances (childhood friends especially) and maybe am too blind to some of Ran's flaws. My point of view isn't perfect either. But I agree Gosho could have developed this romance a little differently, some situations border on grotesque maybe, so I understand what you mean.

  9. She cries a lot, just because her (supposedly) one-sided childhood friend crush is off to do his job (or so she thinks), and his job happens ti have its dangers. He came back and calls occasionally. If you're asking for more that's called selfish. He has no obligation to call and meet you.

What's selfish about that? She is in love and naturally wants it to be mutual. How is a person in love supposed to behave? Like a passive droid who isn't interested? I really don't understand this part of your post.

  10. I used to despise her strongly, to the point I dedicate my life bashing her and chasing away her fans on the net (I get it, shame on me). But for some reason, it died off.

Anyway, for me it was because of her signifigance to the plot, yet the amount of screentime she have and did not deserve. I would've loved DC if Shinichi went out with Kazuha and Heiji (in this imaginary universe, they took Ran's place), and things go on from there. It would've been much more entertaining, in my opinion.

She gets in almost all of the episodes, yet she didn't change much. She did change one thing, from the comic relief violence to the distress-mode damsel. It's annoying. Face it, Shinichi isn't even her boyfriend. Just a childhood friend. Ran didn't own him.

So my lifelong friend who happens to be my crush is going to a long case to do his job. All I'll get is a few occasional meetings and phone calls. That's good enough for me. He isn't even my boyfreind after all. My love is (supposedly) one-sided.

But no. She just have to go around like she owns him. He doesn't pick up his phone? Get angry. He's being irritating? Act cranky.

Sure, she has her understanding moments too (Like that valentine chapter, for one), but her annoying moments shadows everything else. Especially if you had been hating her for that long.

But honestly, Shinichi have no obligation to call her, right? I don't even know why he bothers. They're childhood friends. There are a lot of people with more than one childhood friends on the globe, and should they call each of them and go meet them everytime their job took them away? Is having friends such a hassle?

Anyway, she doesn't have a huge impact to the plot after like, 600 episodes, at least? None of them brought great impact to the plot. A few of the character twist the plot an episode of their appearance, but Ran...

And one more thing, does every movie require her being saved? Can't she help herself just once? She knows karate, right? She can bend a pole, break a table. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but how could one has such unearthly power but hasn't saved herself once?

And one more, she should stop crying that much and actually do something about the situation if she hate it that much.

Even in case her love was one-sided (which in my opinion it is not), she has the right to fight for it and try to get Shinichi's attention. Or does a person in love have to be passive and not to try to make it become mutual, for some unknown reasons? And "dedicating your life to chasing her fans" is really upsetting (for me personally) because I don't really feel like it's a good thing I was born into a world where so many people hate childhood friend romances, which are the only romances that manage to touch my heart (all the others leave me cold like a fish).

I mean, no offense please, I am not angry or belligerent, just sad.

  11.

I would, however, enjoy a plot twist like "wow, Ran knew Conan was Shinichi all along!" or something like that, lol.

That would be good too. At least, I would be really disappointed if the fact that Conan was Shinichi will remain a secret for Ran. In this case, their relationship would lack trust and honesty in some parts, imho.

  12. I am a hardcorde ShinxShi fan and given the inevitable tragic ending I would like to at least stand the ShinxRan couple. Can someone give me a really good argument ?

Well, I don't know if my reasons sound convincing enough, but I support Shinichi and Ran because they are each other's first love and have been close since they were little. They have already become an inseparable part of each other's lives, being close for so long, and I admire people who remain faithful to one single person forever. Also, the author shows that, in spite of everything, they continue to love each other and are never tempted to break up and get together with somebody else. Separating them would be just cruel in my opinion.

As for Shiho/Ai, I think she might be a good friend for them. I am not sure Ai really loves Shinichi in a romantic way, although it's possible, but I am sure Shinichi doesn't feel towards her like that. If they got together, that would break Ran's heart (meaning their happiness would be based on somebody's unhappiness), while if Shinichi and Ran got together, who knows whether Shiho would really feel bad or would just say "oh well, I guess they know what they are doing" etc.

I hope I didn't sound disrespectful towards the Shinichi x Shiho fans, I respect their points of view even though support a different pairing.

  13. I am all for the Shinichi and Ran pairing. First love that lasts forever is my ideal, especially if the people have been close since childhood, which in my opinion is the most innocent period of people's lives. Childhood friends solidifying their innocent and tender bond with romantic love is one of the best things ever. I am always genuinely sad when a fictional or real "first love" couple breaks up and people move on to others. I hope this will never happen in DC. If Shiho was Shinichi's first love, I would have rooted for her (even though I would have liked Ran's character nevertheless). But it's Ran that Shinichi has grown up with and fallen in love with, so it's Ran I would like to be with him forever, so their bond formed when they were innocent children never breaks.

  14. Curiosity:

Do you think Rum will only be discovered at the end of the story along with the Boss (or shortly before) or will it happen halfway through the story and Rum will be removed from the scene by death or arrest and the Boss will have to search for another second-in-command for the rest of the story?

  15.

... Your thinking seems out of whack. Your sureness they will repent just because they are beautiful makes no sense because beauty has nothing to do with goodness. The world isn't a Disney movie where ugly people are bad and pretty ones are good.

I thinking you are thinking too much with the "lower brain" instead of the one in your head.

I re-read 38cutie's post several times, it doesn't state they won't kill just because they are beautiful. He/she only says they have repented and he/she is sure they won't kill again because they shed tears of remorse. The only thing pertaining to their physical appearance is that 38cutie defines them as "cuties" but he/she doesn't state that's the reason that guarantees they won't kill again.

  16. Reading this topic reminds me of the moronic facebook posts made by some girls who thought the Boston Bomber brothers were innocent because one of them was cute. Yes, that was a thing. Justice is blind for a good reason.

I find Shinichi and Ran idealistic when it comes to their principles about murder. One way to look at ethics is to measure how much someone values sticking to good principles versus good outcomes. A principle-driven person would not support bad means even if it led to a very good end, while an outcome-driven person would be upset when good principles prevented good ends. Shinichi and Ran are both very principled, and that works well in places like Japan which is attentive to crime.

It is hard to be principled in places that are unfair. For instance, there have been lots of cases in India where repeat rapists and killers who kept getting away because of connections or threats were then killed by mobs. (Akku Yadav was a famous one.) Is it worth standing by your principle not to murder when a rapist will keep attacking the women and children in your community with no hope of justice? That's the sort of decisions some people have to face. Even though I live in a nice country, I can recognize adherence to principles is a luxury rather than universal law that will work well for everyone. That's why I think that Shinichi and Ran are idealistic - they are inexperienced when it comes to struggles others have to face in unfair places.

Mostly I hate it when Gosho tries to say one side of the ethics measure I mentioned above is the right one. There was a moment of really strong  values dissonance in the fandom when Sera tried to get that hostage taker shot in Mouri agency hostage case but Ran stopped her because she didn't want him to be killed. Gosho made it seem like Sera was worse than Ran for trying to put a good outcome ahead of good principles. I don't like that sort of simplistic thinking about ethics. Both sides have their merits.

That's a great post, but I would like to disagree on 2 things:

    1) The Boston bombers aren't like the culprits in DC, they killed innocents and the DC culprits kill really, really evil and dangerous people in most cases (whether it's justified or not is a different question)

    2) Even though Japan has a low rate of "normal" crime, they allow the Yakuza to be legal and we all know the Yakuza deal in child pornography among other things. Not even Chapo Guzman in Mexico or Sergei Mikhailov in Russia can form a political party or a company openly called "Sinaloa cartel" or "Solntsevskaya bratva", while the Yakuza openly write the names of their syndicates like "Yamaguchi-gumi" on their office doors. There is no law like RICO, and it's not even considered a social disgrace to be a member of the Yakuza.

  17. I don't know about you, but these people should have enough common sense to realize that murdering people is never the answer. Never.

Self-defense is a different story, but we're talking about people who do it just to experience the satisfaction of being purged from some petty history they had with the victim.

Yeah, I agree that Conan's "preachings" gets repetitive--even a bit arrogant and distasteful a times--though never hypocritical.

Yeah, I also sympathize with the murderers at times, but these people have lost all self-control and resorted to murder to resolve their problems. They need a step back into reality--what exactly are they accomplishing from killing someone? For their own peace of mind? What about the victim's family and friends? It's plain selfish.

You can't just concoct some elaborate murder plan without having solid intentions. In other words, these people knew exactly what they were doing, these people knew the consequences, and knowing so means that these people were prepared to face whatever punishment awaited them if they were to be found out.

You can't justify murder. It's flat out wrong--no matter how much the murderer has been victimized.

I understand, but I feel too sorry for all of them, I can't help it. And in many cases they have nothing to lose (the family has been killed for example) so they at least take revenge. If Conan at least criticized the crimes of the "victims" too, he wouldn't seem so hypocritical to me. Instead, they get a pass. Why? Just because they're dead?

  18. I know in my heart that they're not evil in nature, they're anti-villains, and i love more anti-villains than complete monsters.

because those cutíes will be completely redeemed when their punishment is over, and become completely reformed.

besides i love chiharu shirakawa and juri himuro, because they're victims of a sad misunderstanding, and they're not evil in nature, and they don't WANT to be evil anymore.

so please have pity on them, because they're genuinelly sorry for their crimes!!!

I agree completely, almost all culprits in DC are basically good people who were brought to crime by despair and the impunity of the real villains who later play the role of the "victims". Murder may be wrong, but they kill one evil person, while the victims just spread evil ariund them and ruin many lives, often even kill innocents. In my opinion, there is absolutely no need to be harsh on them like Conan is. They are going to jail and he should be satisfied with that. When he is not and starts crushing them morally with his hypocritical robotic preachings, he doesn't seem like a "good guy" at all. Where was his "justice" when the "victims" wreaked havoc with impunity?
