Shinichi Kudo is called to solve the case.
The episode opens at the home of a man who uses a wheelchair. Shinichi Kudo and Inspector Megure are there to investigate a recent murder. The homeowner, feeling disturbed by the police presence, orders them to leave immediately. However, the inspector advises against it, as the victim, Mr. Yamasaki , the president of Yatsubishi Bank, was also among the guests.
A few seconds later, Shinichi Kudo begins solving the case: the murderer must be one of those present. Shinichi explains that, due to the locked door, the only way to enter and leave the room was via the balcony. The homeowner disagrees, pointing out that the hallway window is ten meters away. According to Shinichi, this means the murderer could only have entered the locked room by climbing over the roof gutter. After the murder, the murderer would have left the room again via the balcony. The homeowner disagrees again, arguing that it's impossible to jump from a balcony into a thin roof gutter. The student detective then explains that all that's needed is a rope stretched between the window and the balcony, secured to the balcony with a pole. The rope would then drop down from the pole as soon as the tension is released.
The homeowner has had enough of these speculations and orders Shinichi to reveal the murderer, otherwise he will throw him out of the house. Shinichi claims that there is only one person who could have committed the crime: the homeowner himself. He knows the entire layout of the house and was therefore able to plan the murder. The man, however, replies that he was confined to a wheelchair and could not move without it. After Shinichi visits the family doctor, however, the man tells the homeowner that he knows the "true story." The doctor told him that he has been able to walk again for three months. After Shinichi reveals this fact as well, the man tries to escape, but is stopped and captured by Shinichi and the police.
The next morning, Shinichi is lying in bed when he notices a loud explosion. He opens the window and sees Professor Agasa , who accidentally blew a hole in his house, is treated at Shinichi's house. Shinichi asks what happened. The professor replies that he was testing his latest invention: a jetpack that can eliminate traffic jams.
Meanwhile, at the Mori Detective Agency, private detective Kogoro Mori is angry at Shinichi and complains about not getting any cases and blames him. His daughter, Ran Mori, says goodbye to him and heads off to school. In front of the school, she runs into the very same high school detective whose name is being made public in the newspaper and on television. Genta , Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko are also watching a television program about Shinichi's case investigation.

Ran and Shinichi discuss how Shinichi only joined the school's soccer club to get in shape for his work as a detective. Ran reminds the detective of their date the next day. Shinichi promised Ran he would take her to Tropical Land if she won the city karate championships.
The following day, they are both at the aforementioned amusement park. Since there isn't a long line for the roller coaster, they decide to ride it. While waiting in line, Shinichi tells Ran that Sherlock Holmes, upon first meeting Dr. Watson, recognized him as a military doctor simply from his handshake. When Shinichi demonstrates this on a stranger, he manages to determine that the woman trains at a gymnastics club. However, it turns out that Shinichi had previously been able to peek up the woman's skirt when the wind blew it up. This is how he noticed the horizontal bruises on her thighs, which were from gymnastic exercises on a horizontal bar.

When Ran spots an empty seat on the roller coaster and the two high schoolers head towards it, two men dressed in black suddenly approach from behind and push in front of the others, claiming they have a reservation. Along with several other people, the four of them board the roller coaster. In a dark tunnel, Shinichi suddenly feels water on his face. After the roller coaster car leaves the tunnel and the passengers can see better in the daylight, they discover that a fellow rider's head has been severed. At the end of the track, Shinichi examines the victim while the two men dressed in black try to escape. However, the high school detective determines that only one of the passengers on this roller coaster could have committed this murder, which is why all the other riders must remain at the scene.
Inspector Megure asks Shinichi if he's sure and clearly states his name. All the onlookers notice and admire him. As the high school student tries to solve the riddle with Megure, one of the two men in black orders them to hurry. Shinichi turns around and looks into the eyes of this man. A chill runs down his spine, and he assumes that this man has already committed a murder. When the police find the supposed murder weapon in the handbag of one of the passengers, the case seems solved. But Shinichi knows that a knife can't be used to cut someone's head off.
He soon identifies another person as the perpetrator: the gymnast. Through a demonstration in which Shinichi plays the role of the perpetrator, Inspector Megure the victim, and six other police officers the remaining passengers, he illustrates his conclusion. According to this conclusion, the woman had wedged something behind her back in the roller coaster car so she could slide out of the safety bar during the ride. With her legs caught in the safety bar, she could have leaned backward to place a noose around the victim's neck. As a gymnast, this would not have been difficult for her. The other end of the rope represents a hook that she attached to the track. As proof, Shinichi shows her the piano wire he had previously found in the tunnel, which he had seen intact around her neck before the ride, disguised as a necklace. This piano wire, used as a noose, was the woman's murder weapon.

Back at the amusement park, Shinichi spots one of the two men dressed in black who were with him on the roller coaster and follows him. He leaves Ran behind, calling out as he runs away that he'll catch up with her after he's taken care of something important. Ran gets the feeling that she'll never see Shinichi again. In a secluded spot in the park, he sees the man he'd been following. He watches him conducting a barter with another man. This man hands over 100 million yen for a film that will supposedly prove his company's illegal arms dealing. Suddenly, the other man in black approaches Shinichi from behind and strikes him with an iron bar. The man in black who was previously involved in the barter asks the other man if he should shoot Shinichi. However, his accomplice relents, saying that the police are still nearby because of the roller coaster murder case, and decides to poison him . The poison is supposed to kill him without leaving any detectable traces in the victim's body. The men disappear, leaving Shinichi behind in the amusement park, his body beginning to ache excruciatingly.
Shinichi states that the room Yamazaki was killed in was locked from the inside. The only possible entrance into the room was the window.
The mansion owner claims that there is at least a 10 meter gap between the two windows that Shinichi states the killer used. Shinichi points out, however, that if the killer used the roof to get closer to the other window, this gap is shortened to a mere 2 meters. Therefore, it could easily be jumped across.
Shinichi notes that there is an indentation on the balcony where the killer attached a rope with a piece of wood at the end, allowing the killer a way to get back across to the 3rd floor window, as it is impossible for the killer to have successfully landed on the 10 centimeter roof ledge coming back. By using a piece of wood rather than simply tying the rope to the balcony, the killer was able to remove evidence of his method of escape while on the other side of the building.
The lack of footprints below the window implies that it was an inside job.
Shinichi claims to have spoken with the killer's doctor.
Shinichi concludes that the murderer could only have been someone who knew the mansion very well and eventually points his finger at the landlord. The latter, being in a wheelchair, then starts to laugh, claiming that he's in no position to be able to commit such a crime. Shinichi then grabs a globe and throws it towards the owner who immediately jumps out of his chair to avoid it. The maid and guests are all in shock. Shinichi then says that he's been healed for a while now as reported by his doctor, which Megure confirms.
Although the episode does not clearly state the mansion owner's motive, it likely had something to do with the "under-the-table" financial dealings that the owner had with Yamazaki.

Kishida was beheaded while riding the Mystery Coaster as the coaster came out of a darkened tunnel.
Shinichi concludes the murderer is Hitomi, as her expertise as a gymnast makes this feat possible. He proves her guilt through two crucial pieces of evidence:
Hitomi's necklace (the murder weapon) is missing after the end of the ride
Hitomi has a tear-trail on her face that runs horizontally which is impossible unless she was crying during the course of the ride.
Shinichi examines the tunnel area of the Mystery Coaster and finds a wire with some pearls still strung onto it and a hook at the end of the wire.
The killer left a false piece of evidence, a bloodied knife, inside Aiko's purse with the intention of framing her. Shinichi explains that this is a fake piece of evidence, because it is impossible for a woman to have enough leverage and force to behead someone while on the ride.
Shinichi states the killer used an object like a purse or a backpack to escape the ride restraints and wrap a wire around the victim's head while in the darkness of the Mystery Coaster's tunnel. After tying the wire around the victim's head the killer tossed a hook attached to the other end onto the roller coaster's track, beheading the victim using the coaster's speed and movement.
Hitomi's motive for murdering Kishida is because she used to go out with him long before she met Aiko and Reiko in college, until he dumped her. Hitomi planned to murder Kishida at the place they had their first date (Tropical Land) using the very necklace he had bought for her. Had Shinichi not proven the truth behind the murder, Hitomi would have committed suicide via poisoning herself after the visit to Tropical Land.
