Biography

Toshimichi Okawa graduated from the Meiji University Faculty of Law (明治大学法学部) in 1980; he is a senior of Atsushi Muroga (室賀 厚), Takashi Matsuyama (松山 鷹志), Sonoda Eiki (園田 英樹), etc. While assimilated into the film study group for research purposes, he simultaneously worked part-time at the promotion section on the 7th floor of Toei Company when he was attending university[1]. What is more, Okawa frequently mingled with the literary agency, Blowback Productions (ブローバック・プロ), whereupon he took part in the production of TV drama Seibu Keisatsu (西部警察)[1]. Based on this, he was then appreciated by Nagahara Shuichi (永原 秀一) and Hiroshi Kashiwabara.

Later on, the screenplays that he wrote had been accepted by Nippon Television - and that made his debut as a formal screenplay writer with the 1980s TV drama Taiyō ni Hoero! (太陽にほえろ!). During that time around, he also studied under the famous scriptwriter Ei Ogawa (小川 英), namely, as a junior of Kazunari Kouchi. Since then, he has been active in a wide range of fields, including television, movies, live-action, and even animation.

In 1989, Okawa made his debut as a film director via Toei V Cinema (東映Vシネマ)'s first film, titled Crime Hunter (クライムハンター 怒りの銃弾). This film received high praise within Japan and was successfully serialised, whereby Okawa remained his position as screenwriter and director in its sequels.
