I hope that Akemi didn't say anything that would endanger Akai's life. XD There was that one scene right after Akai shoots Vermouth, where he said something about how he didn't want to see Haibara yet - I took that to mean what you suggested, too. It seems to me that Akai is willing to directly interact with Shiho after killing Gin off.
