Subaru Okiya

Subaru Okiya.jpg

After Akai faked his death he developed a disguised persona with Yukiko Kudo's help. As Subaru Okiya he sought to protect Haibara from the Black Organization and the new threat from Bourbon in accordance with the promise he made with Akemi. He also helped Conan with assorted cases, and kept an eye on his FBI comrades. For information about Akai's disguise and events that took place while he was disguised, please refer to the Subaru Okiya article.

"Scar Akai"

Scar Akai.jpg

Bourbon, who believed Akai faked his death with Kir's help, got together with Vermouth and proposed a secret plan to find out if the real Akai was alive by appearing as a scarred Akai in front of his closest allies.

Masumi Sera

After news of Akai's death reached his family, Akai's younger sister, Masumi ******* came from America to Japan to investigate her brother's supposed death.

Hints that Okiya was Akai

For the former theory, please see Okiya is Akai Theory
Okiya and Akai have similar faces
  • Okiya and Akai have similar appearance and habits. Elaborate here later.
  • Okiya and Akai are both left handed.[1]
  • Conan, who knew Okiya was Akai and was therefore an ally, uncharacteristically broke with his normal untrusting tendencies by allowing Okiya to be close to Haibara despite multiple warnings from her. Not only did Conan continue to brush off her warnings, he came up with excuses as to why he trusted Okiya. One such excuse, "A Holmes fan can't be a bad person!" was an obvious lie as there was an entire murder case where all the suspects were Holmes fans[2] and the Black Organization has used Sherlock references before.[3]
  • In the "Red, White and Yellow" case,[4] Conan recognized the address Okiya was staying at despite never having met Okiya before.
  • Okiya was often shown drinking bourbon, which Camel had earlier stated was Akai's favorite alcoholic drink.[5]
  • Ran felt like she has seen Okiya from somewhere.[6] Ran has met Akai three times that she can remember: once in New York City,[7] in a restaurant,[8] and another time after the "Dark Footprint" arc.[9] Akai had frightened and deliberately intimidated her in their first meeting[7], so she felt uncomfortable and decided she shouldn't talk about Shinichi with Okiya.
  • Haibara began suspecting Okiya to be Dai Moroboshi. During a car chase, Okiya said the line "Don't make that kind of face"[10] which caused Haibara to remember that Dai Moroboshi said something similar to that in the past.[11] Okiya triggering Haibara's Black Organization sense also fit with this as Dai had been in the Black Organization.
  • Okiya and Akai sometimes use similar expressions. Okiya at one point admonishes Haibara "not to make that kind of face."[10] Akai has used that line twice before, once to Conan in Clash of Red and Black[12] and once as Moroboshi Dai in Haibara's past.[11] Both Akai and Okiya refer to the Black Organization members as wolves.[13][14]
  • When Okiya runs into Jodie at the department store and knocks her down, he tells her, "The division of fault is 50/50. You also bear some of the blame for neglecting to pay attention to your surroundings." As this occurred during Jodie's chase for Scar Akai whom she thought was the real Akai, one can surmise that Okiya's intention may have been to hint that he was Akai she was looking for.
  • Aboard the mystery train ride, Yukiko and Okiya retrieved unconscious Masumi Sera. When Okiya and Sera were alone, the unconscious Sera whispered 'Shuu-nii' (-nii being the Japanese honorific for older brother) and Okiya had smiled at this, implying that he is her brother, Shuichi Akai.
  • "Subaru Okiya", "Dai Moroboshi", and "Shuichi Akai" are all references to Mobile Suit Gundam character Char Aznable. The “Akai” (meaning red) part of Akai’s name refers to Mobile Suit Gundam character Char Aznable’s nickname “Red comet.” “Shuichi” is a reference to the voice actor of Char Aznable, Ikeda Shuichi (who incidentally became Akai’s voice actor too). Dai Moroboshi, the alias Akai used while he was undercover in the Black Organization, comes from part of Char's real name, Casval Rem Deikun, with "Dei" pronounced as "Dai" (ダイ) in Japanese. In Moroboshi (諸星), the first kanji can be broken up into 言者 which when pronounced as げんしゃ (gensho) sounds very similar to the word for "phenomenon" (genshou). The second character (星) means "star". Moroboshi, read as "Star phenomenon" references falling stars or maybe comets. “Subaru Okiya” is a pun on Char Aznable’s real name which is キャスバル “Kyasubaru” (romanized as 'Casval').[15]

Hints that Okiya was not Bourbon or another character

  • Okiya knew about Conan's tracking glasses and the detective badges.[16] Conan has never used the tracking glasses in front of Okiya before. Bourbon or a third party would not be privy to Conan's gadgets. The mechanism to operate Conan's glasses isn't obvious, so only someone who knows about their existence beforehand could recognize the glasses at Agasa's and figure out how to activate the tracking function. Shuichi Akai could have heard about the glasses in several ways. The first source is when James Black was kidnapped while he had Ayumi's detective badge. Conan used the badge to track down James Black. James was waiting to meet with Akai before he was kidnapped and drove away with Akai after he was rescued. Akai could have also heard about the tracking function from Jodie when Conan chased after Kir to prevent an assassination. Finally, Akai may also know about them from when Haibara borrowed the glasses to find Conan at the shipping yards at the climax of the Vermouth arc. He was present at the time and would have seen Haibara wearing them even though she has never worn glasses when Akai had seen her previously.

Hints that Scar Akai is a Black Organization imposter and not the real Akai

For the former theory, please see Scar Akai is Bourbon Theory
Scar Akai after firing a gun at the bank robber holding Conan hostage. He uses his right hand.

Scar Akai is a disguise used by Vermouth and Tooru Amuro (Bourbon) to impersonate the real Shuichi Akai. Bourbon used the disguise at the Teito Bank, the Beika Department Store, and outside Mouri Detective Agency. Vermouth used the disguise aboard the Bell Tree Express.

  • Scar Akai is right handed, not left handed like Akai. Scar Akai used his right hand to fire a handgun, to hold his umbrella and to hand back a cellphone.
  • When Gin called Kir in the "Thirteen Red Shirts" case,[17] he held a gun to her head the entire time. After Gin observes Scar Akai[18], he gives the order for Chianti to leave, and he lowers the gun from Kir's head.[19] The lowering of the gun is concession on Gin's part that he knows or strongly suspects Scar Akai isn't the real Akai and thus is not proof Kir is a traitor. Gin also expresses displeasure with Bourbon directly following this incident.
  • Scar Akai's "amnesiac behavior" was contradictory and implied he was part of the Black Organization. If Scar Akai was the real Akai and had his memory, Akai would absolutely not wander around in the open since it puts Hidemi (Kir) at risk with no gains to be made from doing so. The Black Organization's actions in the "Thirteen Red Shirts" case[17] demonstrate the danger. If Akai does not have his memory, then it is plausible Akai would walk around in the open without knowing the danger he is in, however Scar Akai's actions strongly suggested his memory was intact. He seems to be stalking the FBI by appearing before them: something he would not do if he had lost all of his memory. Further emphasizing the point, Akai also apparently left a warning message to Jodie on her drink coaster during the events of the thirteen red shirts case. If perhaps Scar Akai recognized the FBI a little and felt comfortable enough to leave Jodie a message, it is strange that he would not speak to the FBI agents since Scar Akai was clearly capable of speaking.[20] Scar Akai also appeared to recognize Chianti.[21]
  • The timing of the appearance of Scar Akai suggested he was a Black Organization member. Because the fire obscured the body of the man who was supposed to be Akai, only three groups knew Akai was dead, Conan and his allies, the FBI, and the Black Organization. Neither Conan's allies or the FBI would want to have someone disguise as Akai and risk having Hidemi Hondou rejected and killed by the Organization after all the work they did to reintroduce her. Meanwhile Bourbon didn't believe Akai is dead and didn't trust Kir, so he has a motive to concoct a plan to try to determine if the real Akai was alive regardless of Kir's wellbeing.
  • Scar Akai only targeted or only appeared in front of people who were close to Akai and might have helped fake his death. This was so Scar Akai could gauge from these people's reactions to the scarred Akai disguise whether they know the real Akai survived. The FBI agents Scar Akai has appeared in front of, Jodie and Camel, were known to be close to Akai and thus would be considered likely compatriots if Akai needed help faking his death. Masumi Sera was Akai's sister. Given the circumstances of Akai's death, Bourbon must also suspect Kir is a spy and was in on the plan. In light of this, it makes sense that Scar Akai would know Kogoro's cellphone number; Kogoro texted Kir after the Ding Dong Dash case, and Bourbon got Kogoro's number from Kir's cellphone which was left in Gin's Porsche when the FBI mistakenly intercepted her. Amuro later directly targeted Kogoro by becoming his apprentice.
  • Scar Akai appeared in highly public places, which would put civilians at risk if someone tried to attack him. In the Beika department store bombing case, the Black Organization had set up snipers aiming into a crowd of people hoping to get who they mistakenly thought was Akai. The real Akai would have avoided trying to meet the FBI in locations where the Black Organization might threaten civilians.
  • When Bourbon was the one disguise, Scar Akai avoided speaking in front of anyone who would know Akai's real voice. Jodie assumed he lost his voice at first, but it was later proven that Scar Akai was capable of speaking when he returned a phone.[20] This suggested that the one is the Scar Akai disguise could not imitate voices. Only when Vermouth was the one disguising did Scar Akai speak in Akai's voice.
  • On the Bell Tree Express, when Scar Akai passes Haibara, she gets a Black Organization reaction to him.
  • In the Beika department store case, Scar Akai demonstrated he was good at deduction like Bourbon had been described. His red shirts case solution wasn't as complete as Okiya's and Conan's deductions, but he may not have had access to the internet and therefore info on the snowy mountains case with his "borrowed" phone.
