Biography

Nobutoshi Canna started as a child actor[4]. He first started at age 3 and played in short films and advertisements[5]. His agencies were the Japanese Child Actors' Agency (日本児童), then Fukuta Agency (副多事務所)[6]. He then stopped acting to focus on his studies and after graduating from high school, he failed his university entrance exams[5]. Not knowing what to do, a friend gave him flyers about different jobs available and a theatre job caught his eye[5]. He then finally joined the Seito Company (劇団青杜), since he liked to be a theater actor and this allowed him to be accepted into Aoni Production[6],[5]. His first dubbing role was in 1991[5].

In his first roles, he used his real name "Nobutoshi Hayashi" (林 延年) and sometimes his nickname "En'nen" (延年), based on a different reading of his first name. He later chose the surname "Kan'na" (神奈) to get a new start, after taking a last name compatibility test. In his first roles, he was known to play "delinquent-like juveniles" who were often times the protagonists, like in Getbackers and Macross 7 and would also play rivals to the protagonists like Knuckles to Sonic the Hedgehog[4]. He would also take on dubbing roles for foreign movies[1].

He later became active as a singer in the 2000s, on Kazunari Tanaka's recommendation[5]. He is rivals with fellow voice actor Hikaru Midorikawa, and has good relations with other voice actors Hideo Ishikawa, Ryotaro Okiayu and Daisuke Sakaguchi notably.
