Heiji Hattori (服部 平次 Hattori Heiji), also known as Harley Hartwell in the Funimation dub, is a character in the manga and anime series Detective Conan. A detective in his own right, Heiji is first considered Shinichi Kudo's biggest rival. However, after his second meet-up with Conan, Heiji considers Shinichi to be one of his closest friends, and even knows of Shinichi's secret of being Conan Edogawa. Conan and Heiji often work together to help solve a case. His best friend since childhood is Kazuha Toyama. His father is the police chief in Osaka, Heizo Hattori.

Heiji's relationship with Kazuha Toyama is a very close one; they were childhood friends, and have stayed close even through the years. There Relationship gets mistaken for a romantic relationship by everyone even though they clame that they don't have that sort of relationship/feelings for each other. But of corse this is not true scince he has shown that he is protective of her when she is with other guys and says that he will never let her get hurt no matter what. Now Kazuha has the same feelings for him, as well as being protective and chasing of other women that might have a intrest in him. Also they have the same situation as Ran and Shinichi as of being childhood friends that have romantic feelings for each other and has the same back round as them scince heiji is a teenage detective and she is a detective's daughter sort of like Ran is a detective's daughter and shinichi is a teenage detective. They are called the 'Ran and Shinichi of osaka' by fans scince there so simular. Even Though they might have there fights they will still love each other no matter what. It is also Showed in the 7th movie that he fell in love with her (whitout noticeing it was Kazuha) which was his first love and is still his only love.
Heiji acts rather brotherly towards Shinichi, even going so far as to pretend to be him on various occassions, so no one figures out that Shinichi and Conan are the same person. Of course, this might also be to make up for all the times Heiji calls him Kudo, which has nearly given Shinichi away multiple times. Heiji can be a little bit worried for Shinichi when he gets into trouble and in a life or death situation as so far as to tell him to stay out of trouble. They are as close as real live brothers both being detective's and being in love with there childhood friends (Heiji is in love with Kazuha and Shinichi is in love With Ran) so they help each other with that as well. they are quite the team when they solve casses they are Close rivals but close as brothers as well. Which makes them together a team no one wants to face alone.

- Heiji's name comes from fictional Edo period police detective Zenigata Heiji (銭形 平次 ) and famous samurai and ninja Hattori Hanzou (服部 半蔵 ).
