The kidnapper was Akiko Hanai. Years ago, Mr. Takei drove a fellow businessman to bankruptcy and then to insanity; he killed his wife and younger son Masahito and then himself, leaving his eldest daughter Akiko alone. She was adopted by her relatives and changed her name, deciding to work for Hanai to keep an eye on him.

Akiko kidnapped Naoko and faked her death as well as the girl's to prove Takei's affection for her; when he used false money as ransom, Akiko decided to kill him as punishment, and Conan (who greatly reminds Akiko of little Masahito) has to talk her out from killing Takei and herself.
