Case

Situation

Heiji invites Conan, Ran, and Kogoro on a sightseeing tour on Osaka. While there they meet Heiji's childhood friend, Kazuha Toyama, but new acquaintances are quickly forgotten when the team comes head-to-head with the third and fourth victims of a serial murderer. The Congressman is the main suspect, but can evidence be found showing his innocence or guilt?

A careful study of the victims' driver records reveals they all attended the same driving school. Heiji is the first one to learn of this and decides to confront the Congressman about it. Meanwhile Conan rejoins Ran and Kogoro only to be swooped away to a hidden shack where a serial killer is believed to be, but with a photo of the driving record and the testimony of the serial killer it appears two mysteries are about to be solved.

The killer was Yusuke Sakata, one of the detectives. His real name is Yusuke Inaba, and twenty years ago his father, a very strict driving instructor, was killed when a tasteless prank involving alcohol and his car went too far, and it was performed by the four victims plus the serial killer Numabuchi and Assemblyman Goshi.

Sakata always had doubts about Inaba's death, as he was a very careful and responsible man. When investigating the case with Numabuchi, however, Numabuchi started screaming and begging for "Instructor Inaba"'s forgiveness, due to their noticeable physical resemblance. Ever since then, he kept Numabuchi hidden in the forest, but was planning to kill him and frame him for the murders he'd commit as revenge for his father's death.

Attempted Murder

Location: Abandoned shack Victims: Ran Mouri and Conan Edogawa Attack Types: Stabbing Culprit: Kiichiro Numabuchi When he was located in a shack outside of Osaka, Kiichiro Numabuchi lost it and attempted to stab the closest person with a knife, then run away. Ran Mouri was said "closest person", but Conan jumped in front to block the blow. The knife caught on Hattori's omamori which he lent Conan earlier; Conan was in pain and out of breath, but after resting a little he was fine.

Attempted Murder

Location: Near the shack Victims: Hattori Heiji and Yusuke Sakata Age: 26 years old (Yusuke) Cause: Gunshot Wound (Heiji) and Burnt Alive Culprit: Yusuke Sakata Sakata's soon-to-be target was the Congressman, but he failed. By that time, Heiji had realized on his own that he was the killer and confronted him. Yusuke explained why did he kill several people and intended to kill Numabuchi and the Congressman, then got ready to shoot himself dead with his service gun; Heiji tried to stop him and empty the gun itself, but in the struggle he got shot, and the rest of the projectiles hit a fas tank and the place caught fire.

Manga to anime changes

• In the manga, Heiji remarks that the trick that was used to make the corpse of the third victim fall to the ground is the same as the one used in a case that Kogoro (or rather, Conan) solved before. This part was removed in the anime.

• The episode was rerun on July 19, 2004. It was unchanged except for the addition of a new scene at the beginning.

Trivia

• When Heiji explains at the end why he put himself in danger to prevent the culprit from committing suicide, he cites Shinichi's principle, enunciated in Distinguished Family's Consecutive Accidental Death Case, that a detective should never force the culprit into suicide in the process of deducing their identity.
• This is the episode that Kazuha first mistook Ran for Heiji's 'Kudo," and presumed love interest.
• This is the first case that takes place in Heiji Hattori's home town of Osaka.
• This is the case that Hattori is worried about a nightmare that he had, where Kudo/Conan ends up dying.
• Hattori wanted to give Kogoro, Conan, and Ran a tour of Osake in a police car, although it is the newest model. They three were anything but pleased.
• In The Mystery Writer Disappearance Case, Hattori told Conan, that if he comes to Osaka, he will treat him to some udon, in this episode, he took Kogoro, Ran, and Conan to a restaurant, and they are eating a soup that has some noodles, although I do not know if it is udon or not.
• Hattori almost made a slip about where Kudo was in response to Kazuha's question, and in front of Kogoro and Ran no less, however he was stopped in time by Conan.
• Kazuha and Heiji's "bond of steel" is when they were little kids they were handcuffed together once.
• Kazuha keeps the link of the handcuffs as a momento around her neck.
