Heiji and Conan tell the others about Someji's murder in the woods, near the pond, and ask them to call the police. They all go back to their rooms waiting for them, and the two detectives wonder if the monster they saw really exists. As they learn more interesting things about Charles Abel and what happened some years ago, they hear the Nue's cry once again and another blaze is set, as if by magic, in front of their eyes. As everyone open their windows to see what's going on, Tanzawa suddenly yells in pain, collapsing in his room. Conan and Heiji rush to his room and thrust it open, finding Tanzawa died of mysterious poisoning, probably from the Nue's venomous snake-like tail.

The police turn up and actually Yokomizo, and not Yamamura, was called to intervene, as the place is closer to Shizuoka than Gunma. Though, Heiji and Conan are disappointed to note he's just as superstitious and stupid as Yamamura at the end of the day. They expound him on the events and the police try hard to investigate "real" murders, while everything just shows they've been committed by a non-human being. Looking at Charles Abel's former dog, and finding some very relevant clues here and there, Conan and Heiji deduce who the killer really is.

The culprit is '''Fumie Masuko'''. She faked the Nue by putting fake fur on the dog and used the fired she created with metallic sodium and a painting of the wall of the house to create an optical illusion. Fumie admits she killed the two victims because Charles Abel was her husband and the two didn't save him back then. Heiji also reveals that Hajime is the son of Fumie and Charles, but Fumie denies it, despite Hajime looking similar to both her and Charles.

She faked the Nue by putting fake fur on the dog and used the fired she created with metallic sodium and a painting of the wall of the house to create an optical illusion. She also stabbed Someji several times in the back to make it believe in Nue's scars, and she used a fizzy drink to target poisoned needles towards Tanzawa's neck to kill him from the outside, as if it were the Nue's tail's work. Fumie admits she killed the two victims because Charles Abel was her husband and the two didn't save him back then, and did not even regret it. Heiji also reveals that '''Hajime is the son of Fumie and Charles'''.

Heiji tries to confess his feelings for Kazuha, but is disturbed by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force landing nearby on the orders of Yokomizo to capture the Nue and secure civilians. Surrounded by soldiers, Heiji decides not to confess. Some time later, the high-school student Momiji Ooka reads about the case on her smartphone and calls Heiji her future husband.

Conan explains the code is actually ciphered as a "scytale" : when writing a code horizontally on a strip of paper wound around a cylindric object, and then unwinding it, that makes the code unreadable to others. Conan tries it however in any direction but fails to decipher the code. The robbers trap the DB, Rumi and Shiratori, and order them to go down the basement. Rumi trips on the stairs and accidentally knocks down a robber, closing the basement's door in the same breath. As the DB take fright and try to thrust the door open, the robbers get infuriated and threaten Rumi. But the latter grasps a broom and shows them her true face and character : a devilish and fearless fighter who challenges the robbers to come along and be ready to die. She probably beats them up as the scene is not displayed to us. The DB eventually open the door and find their teacher screaming in fear, apparently having knocked down all three robbers just by shaking a broom in every direction. Rumi says she's indeed very lucky.</spoiler>
