Prologue - Roller Coaster Murder Case

Characters introduced

File 001 - The Heisei Holmes

Shinichi names the culprit

At a party in a mansion, high school detective Shinichi Kudo solves the murder of the host's wife for Inspector Megure. The host pretended to be wheelchair bound so that he could move around his house unnoticed and then climb out one window and up 2 meters to the roof. The house's unique layout aloud him to cross to another window that was 5 meters away where he murdered his wife and then returned. For proof of the healed leg Shinichi kicked away the wheelchair, causing the host to land on his feet. Then when the host tried to run Shinichi kicked a globe at him to subdue him. The next day, the newspapers and TV reporters proclaim Shinichi's latest success, but his childhood friend Ran Mouri is upset at him for once again taking business away from her father Kogoro Mouri, a private detective. As they are talking a kid accidentally kicks a soccer ball towards then and Shinichi kicks it back. Shinichi reveals that he had played soccer as a way of honing his skills in the same way that Sherlock Holmes practiced fencing. Ran warns him that any day now he will stick his head into a case and get in real trouble. She reminds him of his promise to take her to Tropical Land, since she won her karate tournament. Shinichi remembers that it was scheduled for 10am and Ran reminds him that he is paying for it all.

When they go, Shinichi spends a lot of time talking about his idol, Sherlock Holmes, and even deduces that a woman in line for the Mystery Coaster with them for a roller coaster is a gymnast using Holmes's classic observation style, a handshake. He explains that only a gymnast would have those types of calluses on her hands and that her skirt blew up in the wind and he saw a bruise across her thighs from the vertical bars. Two friends of the woman, a man and his girlfriend get upset at Shinichi is talking to her. Shinichi asks them if they want to cut in line infront of them so that they all can sit together but this is declined. After seeing the man in front of them kiss his girlfriend he imagines a situation of his own. While loading into the roller coaster car two men in all black cut line to sit in the back row. Ran gets angry at Shinichi for spouting off about Holmes and Conan Doyle ruining her day with "just" Shinichi. After the coaster starts a drop of liquid hits Shinichi's face and after exiting the tunnel they all see Kishida, the man from the front of the line is mysteriously beheaded. The suspects are the victim's girlfriend Aiko, their friends Hitomi (the gymnast) and Hitomi's friend, and two mysterious men in black. The coaster pulls to a stop and people are running away screaming. Shinichi then declares it a murder and that it was one of the seven passengers of the coaster. Shinichi notes the intense coldness of one of the men in black's eyes. After Inspector Megure and the police arrive, they discover a bloody knife in Aiko's bag and arrest her.

While consoling Ran, who was upset by the crime, Shinichi sees one of the men in black loitering by the bathroom and decides to follow him. He tells Ran to go home without him and Ran has a strange feeling she will never see him again, but cannot run after him because her shoelace breaks. Shinichi spies on the man in black making a blackmail transaction with a company president. The reason the men in black rode the coaster was to over look the area and make sure the president was really alone. The shorter man in black exchanges a role of film for a brief case full of money. The film supposedly contains proof of the president's company smuggling guns. With Shinichi distracted by the scene, the taller man in black hits him from behind and knocks him nearly unconscious. Many cops remain in the area, so the men in black force-feed Shinichi a "new poison" that purportedly leaves no trace behind in the body to provide a cause of death. The taller man in black mentions that it had not been tested on humans yet, making Shinichi the first guinea pig. After they depart, Shinichi's body begins to steam and feel like it's burning; his last thought before finally losing consciousness is of Ran. When he awakens, he has been found by park security guards who refer to him as a "little boy". The last panel reveals that Shinichi now has the body of a 6 year old illuminated by the cross beams of the security guards' flashlights.

File 002 - The Great Detective Turned Small

    Ran finds Conan

Shinichi notices that his sleeves and pants legs are now much longer and then is lifted off the ground by one of the security guards. The guard speaks into the radio and identifies him as a young boy age five to seven and probably a grade school student. Meanwile Ran arrives home to see her father Kogoro Mouri drinking with a very full ash tray in front of him. They briefly talk about Shinichi and Ran becomes more worried. The guards bring Shinichi to Tropical Land's Medical Room and Shinichi tries to explain what he witnessed to the guards. Shinichi then sees himself in a mirror and realizes his body has shrunk. He escapes from the guards and heads home being chased by guards and dogs. At this moment Ran is trying to call Shinichi's house and the call won't go through so she decides to head over there. When Shinichi arrives he runs into his neighbor and family friend Professor Agasa, age 52 and inventor of odd gadgets. Naturally, Agasa does not believe the child's claim that he is Shinichi Kudo, but when Shinichi correctly deduces that Agasa had just run home from a restaurant, Agasa realizes the truth.

Shinichi deduces that Agasa has just come from the Colombo restaurant based on these clues

    1. signs of his jacket being wet in the front but not the back indicate that he was running in the rain
    2. there is mud on his pants that is similar to the construction site near the restaurant
    3. the special meat sauce is still present on his beard

Inside his house's library, Shinichi dons his old elementary school uniform and discusses the situation with Agasa. Shinichi asks him to make an antidote, but Agasa cannot without knowing the ingredients to the poison. As Agasa insists that Shinichi keep his identity secret for fear of the men in black realizing he is alive — and coming to kill him and anyone he may have told about them — Ran arrives in search of him.

Agasa stalls Ran as Shinichi hides behind a desk and turns his father's old glasses into a makeshift disguise. It is mentioned that Shinichi's father is a world famous mystery writer. When she discovers Shinichi, she finds him adorable and asks his name. Shinichi panics, looks at the nearby books, and answers Conan Edogawa, from Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo. Agasa tells Ran that Conan is a distant relative whose parents are in the hospital and have asked him to take care of him. But, he tells her, he is a single man and cannot properly take care of a child, so he asks Ran to take him in. When Conan hisses protests, Agasa quietly explains to him that Ran's father Kogoro Mouri is a detective, and Conan realizes that if he lives there he may find information leading to the men in black. Excited by the prospect, Conan agrees and goes with Ran to ask Kogoro if he can stay.

On the walk home, Ran asks Conan if he has a person he likes, explaining that she does. Intending to tease her, Conan asks if she is talking about Shinichi. To his surprise, she admits to it but asks Conan not to tell Shinichi. This revelation causes Conan to almost admit his identity to her, but they are interrupted by Kogoro rushing out to the street in pursuit of a case: a rich man's child was kidnapped by a man in black. He heads off in a taxi, but belatedly realizes that Conan snuck into the car and Ran followed Conan. As Kogoro and Ran argue about whether they'll interfere with his work, Conan is thinking only of the men in black...

File 003 - The Unwelcome Great Detective

When they arrive at the kidnapped girl's house they are met by her father, the butler and two women. They are told by the father that Akiko Tani, age 10, had been kidnapped by a large man dressed entirely in black. The butler, Asou, was the only one who had witnessed the abduction and everyone else had come running after hearing her scream but she was already gone. Shinichi, as Conan, acting on old habits asked for more details in the case and had a notebook in hand to write them down. The butler then recounts his story: Akiko was playing with a ball after coming home from school when a man in black appeared and grabbed her. The kidnappers demand was that the father close down his company with in a month and to not get the police involved. Then the man apparently scaled the wall by climbing a tree. Conan asks what the mans voice sounded like but the butler was not clear. Then Conan received the first of many bops on the head from Kogoro. One of the two women present mention that when the butler told them what happened that he was yelling, but quietly. Then the father reveals that the kidnapper had called in demanding three million yen in used bills. This shocked the butler greatly, causing him to ask if it was a mistake. Conan goes to examine the tree that the kidnapper had used to escape and was chased off by three angry dogs. In order to calm himself down and clear his head he begins to juggle the ball that Akiko had been playing with. This reminded Ran of Shinichi. At this moment Conan discovers the truth behind the whole case just in time to see the butler trying to sneak off.

Clues that helped determine that the butler was the kidnapper

    1. The butler was the only witness
    2. The butler could not describe the kidnappers voice very well
    3. It would have been far easier to kidnap the girl on the way home from school, rather than at home
    4. It would be difficult to climb a tree carrying a little girl and not cause the dogs to bark

He asks the butler if he was going to where the girl had been hidden. Conan then begins to put on a childish act to show Kogoro the clue he had discovered. By kicking the ball over to the trees he showed them that the dogs bark quite loudly around strangers, but barking was not heard during the kidnapping. From this Kogoro is able to connect the dots and stop the butler from leaving. Thinking the case was solved Kogoro shouts in victory but something is still bothering Conan. Just then one of the women brings out a phone and on the other end a voice asks if he has finished preparing the money, it was the kidnapper.

File 004 - The Sixth Smokestack

The first of many such introductions

After determining that Asou, the butler, was the kidnapper a call had come in from a second kidnapper. The butler was shocked as he claims that he did not have any accomplice. The father is aloud to hear Akiko's voice over the phone to let him know that she will be in danger if three million yen in used bills are not collected as ransom. Akiko manages to yell into the phone that she is being kept in a school warehouse where you can see a big smoke stack from the window before the call cuts off. The father still thinks the butler is involved and yells at him, while Conan mounts one of the three dogs and races off. Conan investigates five schools that are near bathhouses and factories that would normally have tall smokestacks, but does not find her. Then he notices that one of the buildings when viewed from the side resembles a smokestack and deduces that she must be at Futatsubashi Middle School. The kidnapper makes a second call demanding that the money be brought to the park or else he will kill Akiko, but after hanging up the phone he tells her that he will have to kill her anyway because she has seen his face. Just then Conan and the dog arrive. The dog takes a beating causing Akiko to yell out to him "Jumbo!!". Conan begins to fight with the real kidnapper but he just isn't strong enough in his new form. Even kicking a soccer ball at the mans face was ineffective. He then takes several hits from the baseball bat the kidnapper picked up. The kidnapper then states that killing two kids instead of one will make no difference to him.

File 005 - The Other Perpetrator

Conan takes another hit from the baseball bat and Akiko questions why Jumbo the dog isn't helping. She looks around and see that he is gone. The kidnapper then prepares to make his final blow to Conan.

On the taxi ride home Kogoro gloats over the success of the day and the client's promised reward. Ran broaches the idea of Conan staying with them for a while, which Kogoro enthusiastically approves, treating Conan like a good luck charm. As Kogoro laughs, Conan broods over his new apparent helplessness, and how to change that by the time he tracks down the men in black.

File 006 - From Third-Rate to Great Detective

Three days after he initially shrank, Conan wakes up to find himself still stuck as a child. He goes out into the main room to see Kogoro worshiping Yoko Okino on a variety show. He then goes to visit Professor Agasa to complain about Kogoro's inability to do anything himself, but Agasa reminds him he is there to find leads on the men in black and that he must not reveal his identity to anyone, especially the Mouri family. Agasa also mentions that to quiet Ran's fears over Conan's absence, he told her that Conan was gone on a case but will return home soon. To aid Conan's efforts, Agasa presents the Voice-Changing Bowtie, which will allow the imitation of any voice. Seeing this, he asks if Agasa could make any better gadgets to aid his ability to catch criminals. He says that he will try and that Conan needs to work in Kogoro's shadow to make him a great detective and that way he will get more cases.

Conan returns to the Detective Agency, where Kogoro is woken by an alarm to see his favorite celebrity, Yoko Okino, perform on the TV show Idol Gogo!! For the sake of the show, Kogoro initially dismisses a prospective client — until he realizes that the client is Yoko Okino herself, in need of help, along with her manager. The scruffy detective instantly changes into a much more sophisticated version of himself, and Yoko explains her recent trouble with a stalker. When she does home the furniture is rearranged, she gets sent pictures of herself, and gets silent phone calls. On the previous night someone had chased her. Her manager, Yamagishi, asks Kogoro to solve the case discreetly, and Kogoro proudly assures them both of his skills. Ran convinces Kogoro to take her and Conan along to Yoko's apartment complex in a high rise building on the 25th floor. When they open the door they see a man face down on the floor covered in blood with a knife in his back.

File 007 - The Bloody Case of the Lovely Pop Idol

Seeing the dead body, Kogoro immediately orders Ran to summon the Police despite Yamagishi's wish to keep it secret. When Inspector Megure arrives with his investigation unit, he is annoyed to see Kogoro because apparently when Kogoro was an officer under Megure's command he made cases difficult. Megure also complains about the heat in the room, which Yoko confirms is unusual. Conan points out several other oddities in the room and accidentally starts analyzing the case aloud, earning looks from both Kogoro and Megure. Conan notes that there are several dried water marks around the body, and that a chair next to the body was the only thing not knocked over, as well as the heat in the room making it difficult to tell time of death. The coroner confirms that the body died from a knife that belongs to Yoko, and Megure inquires whether Yoko or Yamagishi recognize the victim.

Yamagishi nervously approaches the body to look and clumsily slips in the blood, which Conan realizes was manufactured to cover picking something up off the body to hide it. After Yamagishi denies recognition and prompts Yoko to agree, Conan discovers that the hidden object, some of which fell from Yamagishi's pocket was long hair. Megure suspects Yoko, but Kogoro assumes that Yamagishi having a key to Yoko's apartment means he is the killer instead. However, the key was recently lost at the recording studio — and Yoko's worries about a stalker began after that. Meanwhile, Conan continues investigating and discovers an earring under Yoko's couch, but cannot get the adults to look until he uses the bowtie to imitate an adult's voice. Yoko recognizes the earring as belonging to Yuko Ikezawa, a fellow TV star, and after Yamagishi mentions that Yuko holds a grudge for losing out on an acting role to Yoko. Kogoro tells the officers to bring her in for questioning. The chapter ends with Kogoro suspecting Yuko, Megure suspecting Yoko, and Conan suspecting Yamagishi.

    File 008 - Resemblance

    Ran misses Shinichi

Yuko rants over being summoned to the crime scene claiming that she was angry at Yoko for getting a role she wanted but, insisting that suspicion should fall on Yoko as the apartment owner. She does acknowledge the earring is hers, but denies the ideathat she could be the murderer and goes straight to the restroom. As she walks away Conan notices that Yoko and Yuko look identical from behind, but when he tries to inform Megure and Kogoro they angrily dismiss him as an annoying distraction. Ran tells Conan that he's a little young to try solving cases like Kogoro and Megure, but they'll surely solve the case soon... A bit more melancholy, she adds that Shinichi would have solved the case right away, and wonders what happened to him, prompting Conan to passionately declare that Shinichi will definitely be home soon.

When Yuko lights a cigarette Conan acts like a little kid to point out that though she claimed to have never been at Yoko's apartment, she knew that a Statue of Liberty statuette is actually a cigarette lighter. Conan then immediately asks where the bathroom is to make Kogoro realize that Yuko knew where that was, too, and he accuses Yuko of killing the victim to cause a scandal for Yoko. Yuko denies killing him, but confesses that she was the 'stalker' harassing Yoko and had entered the apartment to steal something, was attacked by the victim, fought back, and fled. Kogoro and Megure doubt her and she explains that she was harassing Yoko because of the stolen work and sent the photos and made the phone calls because Yoko kept doing her job like she was fine. Yuko had then stolen the key to the apartment from the manager. The man had attacked her and that's how she lost the earring. Then the man's body was identified as a young man named Akayoshi Fujie, who attended Yoko's high school. Yamagishi continues to deny that Yoko might know him, but Yoko breaks and confesses that he used to be her boyfriend, who broke up with her before her debut but kept trying to get back together recently because she had become famous. Yoko had moved to this apartment to get away from him.

Yoko, Yamagishi, and Yuko all are suspicious. Yuko had the opportunity while being attacked, Yoko had the motive to want him dead, and Yamagishi had covered up evidence. Then Conan notices a strange dent in the wood floor where the body had been. Putting the dent together with the initial disarray of the room except for a single upright chair nearby, the unusual heat of the room, the water marks around the body, and the hair in the body's hand, Conan realizes he's solved the puzzle, but Kogoro prepares to pronounce his own conclusions about the culprit.

File 009 - An Unfortunate Misunderstanding

    Calling Ran

Kogoro again accuses Yamagishi of murdering Fujie to prevent a possible scandal, but Conan knows that he is wrong and kicks an ashtray at the back of Kogoro's head. Knocked unconscious, Kogoro falls into the chair behind him, and Conan uses the Voice-Changer Bowtie to explain the truth. Beginning the legend of Sleeping Kogoro.

A few days later, Ran and Conan walk home with dinner groceries. She comments that she never knew that her day was so smart. They see a public broadcast of Yoko and Ran says that Yoko is so strong to continue on after all that occurred, and that she's not that strong... Shinichi's week-long absence leaves her unable to sleep at night. Later that day, as Ran continues to worry, Conan uses the bowtie to call from a payphone as himself, to reassure her that he's all right, and he'll return as soon as he finishes the case he's working on. As they talk, Conan wishes he could speak to Ran again, not through a machine, but with his real voice.
