Ran, Sonoko, and Conan go to watch the stars. Sonoko is especially hoping that she will see a shooting star. Ran has a friend at the observatory that helps her use a telescope; he introduces his sempais that work at the observatory. One of them just won an award known as the "Star Pioneer". However, that same night, that same person falls from the higher level of the observatory. Conan knows that this isn't an accident - but how can he prove it?

After Conan tranquilizes Sonoko, and reveals the culprit to be '''Hiroshi Akimoto'''. A bit after 11:30 p.m., he returned to the tower with Nonaka, and pushed him over the railing. In order to distract them, he lied about the satellite, causing them to pay attention to the opposite side of the tower. And about, the one they saw who fall, wasn't Nonaka, it was a doll, where after he pushed Nonaka over the railing, he tied the doll onto the railing a bit next to where he was standing and quickly secured it with fishing string, but there are fresh marks on the railing. And then fifteen minutes after midnight: the timer connected to the string dropped the doll. He used them to witness his location at the time by watching it with them, by making himself one of the witnesses of the accident, he created a seamless alibi. And also, the doll is under of his car, where he hurried to the location as fast as possible making sure to stop over the doll, easily concealing it from them. And while they were trying to help the dead Nonaka, he moved the doll into the car, the doll he made was a blanket with fishing string attached. Alos, he is the one who arrived at the tower but last to approach the body. To incriminate him, the picture of Akimoto where distinguishing his picture to Nonaka's picture, where on his picture, there must be a shooting star, where this evidences that Nonaka's picture wasn't taken today. Actually, he wanted to replicate the same photo, so he bought a camera like Nonaka. Then, went to the tower the day before and took two photos, unless he had the murder plan, he wouldn't have done so. And after killing Nonaka today, he set the doll, replaced the recent film from Nonaka's camera, replacing it with the prepared film. But, then there is a flaw to his trick, that was the shutter noise, after changing the film, he can't press the shutter, that means, the prepared pictures would be distorted. Akimoto confesses and reveals Nonaka took the Star Pioneer for himself, where it was his dream, even though he had to do co-research with someone else.
