Asami told the Detective Boys that Mitsuhiko had borrowed from her a sunscreen that she had bought, which came from abroad. She also mentioned that her brother often saw a girl which worked at a flower shop, and probably was in love with her. The girl said she hadn't seen Mitsuhiko that morning, but then she realized she had seen him indeed about to take a bus. She called his name, but he didn't reply. The guys also heard from her that Mitsuhiko had been wearing his cap, smelled like lemons, and that she had seen him being warned by two men after mentioning the name of some samurais. She started wondering which they were, and she mentioned Uesugi, Takeda, Toyotomi and Takegawa.

With no more clues, the Detective Boys asked the bus driver about Mitsuhiko. He told them that he was in his bus and that he remembered him because he wasn't looking through the window but ahead, as if he was worried. He had got off the bus at a train station, so his friends went to look for him there. One of the employees there remembered him because he had bought an adult ticket by mistake and asked him to change it in a hurry. The ticket was 1,900 yen so it could be a ticket to Chiba or Gunma. A worker at a train station in Gunma said he had seen Mitsuhiko hiding there for a while and then leaving. The Professor and the Detective Boys start looking for Mistuhiko in the Gunma Prefecture with Conan's tracking glasses... Where could he be?

Having met with this serial killer once before in Osaka (Episode 118), Conan knew how dangerous Numabuchi is already... but as the day grows darker and as Conan later finds out from Haibara that Numabuchi was an ex-member of the black organization, things get a bit more serious.

The scent of lemon was nothing but just the sunscreen Mitsuhiko borrowed from Asami. It smelled like that because it also was an insect repelent. Haibara seems to know a lot about [[Ki'ichiro Numabuchi]], and she reveals to Conan that it is because '''Numabuchi was part of the Black Organization'''. He had been probably hired to be a hitman, but as he wasn't clever enough, they tried to send him to Sherry as a guinea pig for her prototypes. However, Numabuchi escaped the Organization before she could meet Shiho.

Regarding Mitsuhiko, Conan tells his friends that he can't reply because he got lost and started shouting to ask for help and almost lost his voice. Moreover, he can't pick the badge because he can't us his hands.

Numabuchi found Mitsuhiko in the forest and says that he reminds him of himself, worried and lost. Mitsuhiko is afraid because he can hear Conan telling him that there's a serial killer in the forest, but he can't escape from Numabuchi, who suddenly appears in front of everyone and gives himself in. He's carrying Mitsuhiko, who hasn't been hurt or harmed by the serial killer. The police officers take him away and Genta takes a look at Mitsuhiko's hands, from where a firefly comes out.

Conan explains everything to his friends. '''Mitsuhiko had gone to the forest to catch fireflies''', due to the fact that in summer a lot of fireflies appear near that river in Gunma forest, as fireflies live in clean waters. They can't be seen from the city, so Mitsuhiko went to Gunma. The name of the samurais Mitsuhiko had mentioned were because he meant to say the names of two firefly species who were named after two samurais who were rivals, Genji and Heike. The two men were from an organization that defends the environment. They knew where Mitsuhiko wanted to go, so they warned him because he didn't want a lot of kids to go to Gunma forest and pollute it. He was looking ahead in the bus because he was following those two men who were in that bus, so he had to know when to get off of the bus as they were also going to Gunma. This was the reason why he bought an adult ticket, as he pressed the same button in the machine as those men. He was hurried to change the ticket because he didn't want to miss the train as he had to keep following the two men. When he got to Gunma, he hid for a while so that the men didn't see him, or they would lecture him again. The bamboo leaves were going to be used by Mitsuhiko to attract the fireflies.

 +
He had done all that because after seeing the fireworks, Ayumi and Ai mentioned they also wanted to see the fireflies, so everything was a surprise for the two of them. Conan then tells everyone that Numabuchi was sentenced to death penalty for his serial murders and that there was no fourth victim. He just wanted to see the fireflies in the forest for the last time in his life.
