Case

Situation

This special Christmas episode of "Detective Conan" is introduced by Heiji Hattori, Conan Edogawa, Ran Mouri, and Kazuha Toyama. Heiji won the bet in the previous episode to go see a baseball game and so it's decided that they're all going to the high school baseball finals in Koshien Stadium. But there is a mysterious guy willing to commit a suicide bombing there. This incident just puts more stress on Conan and Heiji, even though they came to a ball game for amusement and relaxation. The unknown person gives them a chance to stop him, however. Heiji and Conan are both struggling to crack the codes, sent by the mysterious man, before the bomb goes off. Earlier, Conan and Heiji witnessed the person walk by them and they thought he dropped his cell phone, when he purposely left it there to "play the inevitable game" with them, consisting of cryptic text messages. In order to solve this case and save countless lives, Heiji and Conan would need a lot a background information dealing with America's favorite pastime, baseball.

The culprit's face revealed, Yukio Torimitsu. He is Hiroshi Torimitsu's father.

The culprit is Yukio Torimitsu. Torimitsu was once a sponsor of the baseball team and Teito High School, where his son Hiroshi played. When he died in an accident after his workout, Yukio disappeared. The first code, "9 6 [7] 1 3" contains 3 hints. The 96 referred to the 96 meter wingspan of Koushien Stadium with the wingspan representing the distance from the home plate to the foul pole, therefore the first cellphone was located by the seats that were right before the pole. The [7] refers to the number on the back of baseball players' jerseys with #7 representing a left fielder, meaning that the phone was on the section that was right before the pole that is next to the left field. Lastly, the 13 represents the 13th row in the section. The second code, "4 7 [3] 4" also contains 3 hints. The 47 refers to silver, a metal. Silver is the 47th element of the Periodic Table (Its atomic number is 47). In Japanese, Silver is pronouned Gin (銀). The hint was a pun, referring to the Ginsan (Translated as silver umbrella) of Koushien. The Ginsan is a special name which refers to the metal overhang at Koushien (The big roof on the top platform over the backstop), which therefore indicates that the second phone is on a seat that is underneath the Ginsan. The [3] refers to the Jersey number of Babe Ruth. There is a monument of Babe Ruth in Koushien that is located just to the left of the center of the Ginsan, meaning that the second phone was located behind the backstop (underneath the Ginsan), and to the left of the center of the Ginsan. The 4 refers to the 4th row in the section. The third code, " [ ] 1 3" contains 3 hints. The first blank space refers to the fact that the entrances labelled 1 - 24 are missing two entrances; 17 and 22. This is because they tore down those entrances and use them for other purposes. The [ ] refers to a retired jersey number (Retiring the number of an athlete is an honor a team bestows upon a player, usually after the player has left the team, retires from the sport, or dies. Once a number is retired, no future player from the team may wear that number on their uniform, unless the player so-honored permits it). Between 21 and 23, there is a booth that has the retired jerseys of the Tigers (The "Tigers" refer to the Hanshin Tigers (阪神タイガース) which is a professional baseball team that plays in the central league), meaning that the third phone is on the outfield seats on the right side. Ran and company are coincidentally seated there. Kazuha finds the third phone underneath her seat but it was quickly taken by Hattori. The final code "8 1 2 [9] 4 9" has three hints. The 812 refers to a little pun that was made by Mouri Kogorou early on in the episode. He said that if the code was 8 1 2 for the first code, then the phone would've been located in the Alps stand. This is because in Japanese, 8 is pronounced as "hachi", 1 as "ichi" and 2 as "ni" (When saying o'clock in Japanese, you add "ji" to the end of the number eg. 2 o'clock is "niji"). Taking the first syllable from each of those numbers gives us "ha-i-ji" which sounds the same as the Katakana for Heidi. Heidi is a reference to a 1974 anime called "Heidi, Girl of the Alps" ("Heidi, Girl of the Alps" is a 1974 Japanese series by Zuiyo Eizo based on the Swiss novel Heidi's Years of Wandering and Learning by Johanna Spyri.). Thus, Heidi refers to the Alps stand. The [9] refers to either the fact that a baseball team is made up of 9 players or the #9 baseball position which is on the right field meaning that Yukio Torimitsu was on the 1B Alps section. Finally, the 49 represents the 49th row of that section.

• Shigeo Nagashima and Kazuhisa Inao are the two characters from 3rd Base Fourth.
• Detective Conan Main Theme is played at the start of the match.
• The case takes place at Hanshin Koshien Stadium, a baseball park located near Kobe in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture.
• The anime stated that there are 49 teams to represent their prefecture, however Japan only has 47 Prefectures divided into 8 regions.
• This case mentioned that Yoko Okino was an alumni of Kohnan High School.
• Koshien Stadium has 403 vines of Ivy on the wall, and can hold 53,000 (at least until an earthquake in 2004 and the following renovations reduced the capacity around 48,000).
