The target wasn't Kanae, but Kogoro Mouri all along. Kanae Kaetsu planned to lead him around by the nose and wait for the best time to kill him. She decides to do so when Kogoro falls on a tree and gets knocked unconscious, but is unable to because she realizes she doesn't want to kill someone that good.
