Evidence
- In the movie previously filmed here, the ski scene had a continuity goof with Minowa's close-up immediately after.
- The bag that was filled with snow has a very long carry-strap and can be purchased in multiple sizes at the resort souvenir shop.
- The ski lift gets within a few feet of the snow at two places on the slope.
- Mimata still has Minowa's clothes on underneath his jacket.
Conclusion
Heiji and the unknown detective, revealed to viewers as Shinichi, investigate and realize separately how the murder occurred after receiving a hint from their respective fathers. Heiji reveals his deductions to the police in person while Shinichi tells them over the phone. They both reveal that the Minowa who skied for his fans was actually his stunt double, Kosuke Mimata, in disguise. Minowa had hidden in a bag Mimata picked up at the base of the slope, to provide his voice for the watching fans. On the ski lift later, Mimata killed Minowa and grabbed the bag he'd prepared earlier to contain snow and have the carry-strap frozen upright where the slope was close, so his ski pole could grab the carry-strap while still on the lift. He put it in his seat before jumping down at the second area the ski lift passed close to the slope. Faced with the evidence, Mimata confesses.
Motive
- Mimata killed Minowa in revenge for Mizugami, whom Minowa had killed four years ago.
- Minowa killed Mizugami because he'd been afraid Mizugami would reveal that Minowa did not perform the skiing scenes in his movies.
Ending
Both Shinichi and Heiji are congratulated, but they are each not satisfied that the other apparently solved the case without needing a hint. While Heiji explains this to Kazuha, as he carries her back to the lodge due to her sprained ankle, they pass Shinichi explaining the same thing to Ran. Heiji and Shinichi recognize each other as detectives, and privately anticipate meeting again in the future.
Back in the present, Heiji asks Conan if he's impressed with the story and the "better detective", not having realized that Shinichi actually was the other detective. Conan thinks the truth to himself, but doesn't actually say it aloud.
Trivia
- Mimata's weapon kills Minowa, same kill Jiro four years ago, is a Tokarev TT-33.
- This case is the fourteenth 1 hour special, not counting reruns. Courtroom Confrontation III: Prosecutor as Eyewitness was the 13th.
- Although this case has the same opening and closing songs as the previous 3 cases, this case, like those other three cases, have unique animation, which pertains to this case only for the opening and closing songs.
- This is another backflash case, although this time it is Hattori thinking back, and apparently it never donned on him that this other better high school detective on the ski slopes was, in fact, Shinichi Kudo, despite being disguised as Shinichi twice in the past: Desperate Revival and Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night, although since Kudo was kind of bundled up, it may have been harder for Heiji to deduce the one truth that they are one and the same. However, if they only passed each other one time, after the case, and all bundled up, that may explain it. Let's face it, Shinichi's iconic hairstyle, is for the most part all covered up with a ski hat.
- This is the first backflash that brings up a case in Shinichi, Ran, Heiji, Kazuha, and Sonoko's middle school years at two different middle schools: Kaihou Middle School for Heiji and Kazuha, and Teitan Middle School for Shinichi, Ran, and Sonoko.
- This case revealed that Shizuka Hattori has a rather large and extensive video collection of Heiji, beginning from when he was born, and is still growing.
- In this case, Shizuka Hattori had a run in with Yukiko Kudo, although they may never have exchanged names.
- Kazuha may be in the advanced Ski Class, with Heiji, however she doesn't know how to get off the ski lift on her own. It is unknown if she is that good at skiing to be in that class, since she has a sprained ankle, and therefore unable to ski anyway at the present, although she may have faked the injury. She wanted to be in Heiji's ski class though.
- This case had two versions of the Yuki-onna stories: the one told by the middle-schoolers and the one Yusaku Kudo told his wife.
- A future case, I think it is this one, will mention that some European countries count differently than they do in Japan and America, which is the same way. However, when Shinichi stated that three things bother him, he raised his three fingers the way, his French-inspired mother does, when she counts to three. Although, Conan has not been shown to count to three this way yet, this case did show Shinichi Kudo did.
- Although both fathers are responsible for the needed hints to their respected sons, for solving the case, the respected mothers were given the hints, and then relayed them to their sons, so the case can be solved.
- Both Heiji and Shinichi required 1 hint to solve the complete trick of the case, however they were both stumped at a different part of the trick.
- In this backflash case, Shinichi and Heiji encountered each other a total of once, after the case, however it was only in passing, and recognizing that the other one was the other detective, however, no word was spoken between them at all. At least not until Shinichi became Conan.
- The TV special Black History 2 was a retelling of this case.
