			Since the police are unable to arrive due to the snowstorm, the inebriated Kogoro takes over the investigation. He photographs the crime scene and questions those present. In doing so, he discovers scratch marks on a safe. Conan, who finds the victim's sitting position and the trail of blood odd, deduces that the bloodstained blanket on the floor must have originally been on the table and represents an obituary. Footprints are found in the snow in front of the broken window. Kogoro therefore assumes that the perpetrator entered the room through the window.

			Kogoro asks the doctors to examine the body. It is striking that the victim's expensive wristwatch is covered in blood. The time of death must have been between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Mr. Oyama suffocated slowly and painfully from the stab wounds in his lungs. Kogoro's theory of a robbery by a stranger is refuted by Conan, who points to the abandoned clock and the fact that the perpetrator entered the room directly without assessing the situation. This puts everyone present under suspicion, and Kogoro questions them about their alibis. Kaori Nakahara was at the supermarket at the time of the murder; Ginji Tobita wanted to go skiing but was prevented by the blizzard and returned to the lodgings. He can prove this with his ski lift ticket; Kaho Ezumi was in the kitchen with Conan and Ran and had only briefly stepped outside to take out the trash; Tomoyasu Kanazawa was in the bathtub at the time of the murder. Conan finds a bloodstained lighter on the sofa. Based on the blood spatter on the tablecloth, he concludes that it must have been there previously. Conan now understands the message of death and has identified the perpetrator.

			Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are on a skiing holiday. But Kogoro has lost the key to their ski lodge. Just as he's about to break down the door, Professor Masashi Oyama drives by. Professor Oyama greatly admires Kogoro and invites them to dinner at his lodge. Outside, they meet Oyama's assistant, Kaori Nakahara, who is returning from shopping. During dinner, they also meet his other colleagues: Ginji Tobita, Tomoyasu Kanazawa, and Kaho Ezumi. Together, they celebrate Professor Oyama's success with his lecture on combating colon cancer.

			After dinner, everyone goes their separate ways: Kaori Nakahara, who forgot something while shopping, goes back to the store and buys groceries for the others, Professor Oyama watches his favorite TV show, Ginji Tobita goes night skiing, and Tomoyasu Kanazawa takes a bath. While Kogoro sleeps off his hangover, Conan and Ran help Kaho Ezumi with the dishes. Just as Oyama is watching his favorite show, a dark figure sneaks up behind him.

			While the others gradually return to the dining room, Oyama lies bound and gagged in his room, a knife in his back. Knowing his death is imminent, he leaves Kogoro a dying message. Since it's already after 11 p.m., Kaori goes to check on him and finds him dead.

Conan rejoins the Detective Boys on the third floor after turning the elevator controls to manual. He pries open the doors and summons the elevator, explaining that because the kids weigh half the size of an adult, for the elevator to have overloaded earlier there must have been one more adult present--on the roof of the elevator. The elevator arrives with Tamada's body on the roof, but as Conan turns away to talk about calling the police, the elevator continues to rise and reveals Shuji standing inside. He initially pretends to be kind and offers to take them outside, while hiding a pipe behind his back. Conan quickly whispers instruction to the Detective Boys and distracts Shuji with the breadth of what they know about him while the kids sneak into the elevator. As the elevator starts to go down, Conan dives past Shuji and just barely makes it inside the elevator intact.

	<spoiler>Shuji angrily runs down the stairs to catch them, but when the elevator opens, he finds it empty. He stops the elevator on the ground floor and goes back up the stairs, trying to bait them out. He finds a barricade and oddly arranged bookshelves in one of the rooms. On Conan's signal, the kids knock over one of the bookshelves, but rather than hit Shuji it hits another bookcase, and then another. More bookcases fall as Shuji raises the pipe to kill them. Just before he can strike, the bookshelf dominoes turn around and the last falls onto him. The police are finally called and arrive to deal with the drugs, corpse, and murderer. On the way home, the kids celebrate solving the case while Conan mentally says goodbye to Conan's body and them as well. When he says goodbye, they feel like he might be leaving for a long time. Conan goes into the apartment just long enough to steal the [[~~baijiu~~]] from Kogoro's alcohol cabinet and goes to Agasa's to demonstrate the cure. Unfortunately, while drinking some of the alcohol made Shinichi's temperature rise, the transformation does not recur. Agasa speculates that Conan's body may have developed an immunity to the alcohol already.
