Watanabe began to serve an animation director for the ''Detective Conan'' anime since 2004, starting with [[The City Crows]]. He only did animation correction and worked under some of the episodes done by [[Tama Production]]. He then quit the anime production team after finishing the animation director work of [[The Mysterious Height Difference of 20cm]] the following year.

In the OVA aspect, Watanabe was also involved in two OVAs' production, working with another animator from Tama Production, [[Takashi Saijo]].
