Holmes' Apprentice
Kogoro, Ran, and Conan find a cat belonging to a rich British woman who offers to pay their expenses on a trip to London so Kogoro may share his detective stories with her friends. To get past airport security, Haibara offers Conan two antidotes to the APTX 4869 for the trip and back. At the Holmes museum, Ran calls Shinichi asking him if he wants a survivor from London. His weak reaction causes Ran to angrily hang up. Outside the museum, a kid named Apollo Glass asks to see Sherlock Holmes to a solve a code that will prevent a person from being murdered. Conan offers to solve the riddle by posing as Holme's apprentice. Apollo reveals a strange man gave him a note containing seven coded riddles, declaring someone in London will die if it is left unsolved. They learn from the police that many children received the same code which Conan speculates to mean a large number of people will die. Conan and Agasa separate from the group as they attempt to decode the riddles.

Love is 0
Ran, feeling upset as she believes Shinichi does not share her feelings, is confided by Apollo's sister, pro tennis player Minerva Glass. Minerva then parts ways with Ran advising her Love is Zero and would never amount to anything no matter the effort. Ran calls Shinichi for advice on the riddles. Conan, tells Ran the first riddle "A rolling bell rises me", refers to Big Ben and accidentally reveals he is in London. Realizing Ran will discover Conan's true identity if she finds him, Conan and Agasa flee from her. Conan becomes cornered in a phone booth and is forced to take the antidote to the APTX 4869 for the return trip and confronts Ran as Shinichi. Ran confesses her pain of liking Shinichi who is indifferent to her feelings and runs away as he pursues her.

Satan
The next day, the police reveal the identity of the man who created the note, Sabara Hades. Kogoro and Ran decode the riddle "My portion is like a chilled boiled egg like a corpse" which refers to City Hall. There, they find many dolls with Mazarin Stone written on their shirts where when beheaded, reveals the letter "T". The riddle "I finished up with a whole pickle" refers to 30 St Mary Axe where scratched up pens labeled as Dancing Men reveal the letter "N". At Big Ben, Ran and Kogoro find an arrow pointing to a drain where The Valley of Fear of fear is inscribed. They deduce from the story that something had been sunk in the river, and find a drain cover with the letter "A". Apollo leads the two to the next riddle, "Now I remember to ask a cake to celebrate in advance" referring to St Bride's Church where they find letters entitled A Scandal in Bohemia. Soaking the letter in water reveals the letter "S".
Masumi Sera is a self-proclaimed high school detective and practitioner of the martial art Jeet Kune Do. After making a mostly correct deduction during a murder case, she transfers to Ran's high school class. She seems to know that Conan is a detective.

Background
Sera is a high school detective and skilled at Jeet Kune Do, a type of martial arts. She can fight at either the same or better level as Ran. She transfers to Ran and Sonoko's class at Teitan High. Since three years ago, she'd been living in America with her parents. She claims she'd rather live in Japan where she was born and raised, so she came to Tokyo and is currently living in a hotel.

Appearance
At first, she wears a fedora and a dark jacket which gives her an androgynous appearance. When she transfers to Teitan High, she gets rid of her fedora and wears appropriate female clothing. Her hair is dark, wavy, and short; it doesn't even touch her shoulders. Even then, she is rather tomboyish; Genta mistakes her for a man, and Sonoko comments she has a petite figure. Later, Genta and Mitsuhiko comment that her bosoms are rather small.

Personality
Sera has a "cheery, sociable, boyish" personality and is well liked by her classmates at Teitan High. On their first meeting, Sera fails to correct Sonoko's mistaken impression that she is a man and even makes it worse by declaring that Ran is "his type". On another hand, Sera purposefully lured a hostage-taker into a sniper's sight with a smile, hoping he would be shot without showing any apprehension about the man dying a presumably messy death in front of her. Sera is especially quick minded, coming up with clever plans and adapting them to sudden changes rapidly. Sera seems to be prone to dramatics like most detectives are, but perhaps to a lesser degree than Shinichi or Hattori as she bluntly says who the criminal is without preamble. Although she has crime scene experience, Sera seems to be less skilled as a detective than Conan, apparently missing a critical clue that was necessary to understand how the murderer's setup worked, although Conan opines that Sera purposely made an error in order to test him. Her catchphrase may be "case closed".

Plot overview
Sera's Introduction (Manga 768-770)
Sera first met Sonoko, Ran, and Conan on a bus after she was mistaken for a groper. After Sonoko declared Sera was the groper, Sera and Ran got into a fight, with Sera's Jeet Kune Do holding even against Ran's karate. Conan and Sera cleared up the misunderstanding by pointing out the real groper. Sonoko then mistook Sera for a boy, an impression which wasn't helped by Sera declaring that Ran was "his type". Sera and Ran both discovered they were heading to the same hotel, about which Conan is less than pleased.

Sera finds out the hotel she is staying at doesn't have a room available and complains at the front desk. A man then falls into the parking lot and dies. Conan runs to the source of screaming while Sera told the guard to watch the elevators before running to the roof. She immediately declares the crime to be a murder, giving her reasoning. She then reveals her name, Sera, that she is a detective, and knows Conan is a detective as well.

Megure is not pleased to have another High School Detective underfoot but lets Sera and Conan investigate regardless. After listening to the suspect testimony, police observations, and examining the crime scene, Sera announces that she has solved the case.

However, Sera's deduction leaves out a critical detail; Conan is therefore forced to use Shinichi's phone to call his own, give Inspector Megure Conan's phone, and speak through Shinichi's as Shinichi using the voice-changer bow tie. Shinichi figures out the detail that had Sera stumped, although a look she gives Conan as he runs off suggests her omission was possibly intentional, and once during the phone conversation she tries to trick Shinichi into admitting that he is physically present at the crime scene instead of being explained the details by Conan and Megure.

The other day, Sera transfers to Teitan high school, surprising both Ran and Sonoko. She was rather popular at school surrounded by students asking her questions about herself.

Kogoro Detective Agency Hostage Crisis (Manga 771-774)
Let's hear your brilliant deduction! (771)
According to Sonoko, Sera has become very popular at Teitan high for being "cheery, sociable, boyish, and cute...and on top of that, she is a jeet kun do-using female detective!" One classmate compares her to Kudo Shinichi who has been taking a break from school. Sera tells inquiring classmates that she has been staying in America with her parents since three years ago, but "rebelled" because she would rather live in her Japan where she was born and raised. She sneaks up behind Sonoko and Ran after school because she wanted to speak to Conan at the Mouri Detective Agency. At the agency, Sera is unhappy to hear that Conan and the rest of detective boys are staying at Agasa's house and will be camping the following day. She settles for asking Kogoro if Conan is always at his side when he solves cases, hinting that she suspects Conan is the real brains behind "Sleeping Kogoro".

Just as Sera is about to walk out the door, three female mystery writers and a man enter the agency. After a moment of confusion, the man suddenly fires a gun into the roof and takes the detective agency hostage. His demands are that Kogoro figure out which of the three writers killed his sister at a ryokan one month ago. The quick thinking Sera sidles up to Ran and tells her to go for the man's gun after she takes his legs out. Sera's leg sweep sends to man to the floor, and Ran removes the gun from the man's hand with a kick; however, Sera leaps back when the man reveals he has bombs strapped around his chest and will detonate them if they try to stop him.

Meanwhile at Agasa's, Haibara is angry that Conan used Shinichi's voice to solve a case around the suspicious Sera. Conan's response is that Sera is familiar somehow, like they have met before or she looks like someone, and Conan feels she isn't an enemy. Meanwhile Genta and Mitsuhiko tell Conan they saw a high school student walking home with Ran, so the jealous Conan calls Ran's cellphone to hear about it from her.

The hostage taker man orders Ran to answer her phone, but Sera snatches the phone away and says hello to Conan (who is shocked that Sera is with Ran). Sera then tricks the hostage taker and keeps the line connected so Conan can listen in by closing Ran's Sea Cucumber Man cellphone strap in between the screen and keypad of the the flip phone.

Nickname Rules (772)
Sera asks a few insightful questions about the case; however the hostage taker man discovers Ran's phone is still connected. Under gunpoint, Sera steps in front of Ran takes the blame, but Conan, using Shinichi's voice, says he ordered Ran to do it. Sera is mystified by why Shinichi is now on Conan's phone. Sera meanwhile spots a glint of light across from the detective agency and declares that the case will come to an end without Shinichi's help.

Possible Sniping (773)
Sera explains to Ran that she secretly kept the call to Conan connected so he could call the police and research into the case. While Sera is still surprised that Shinichi was on the other end of the line instead of Conan, she had initially hoped that Shinichi would somehow be able to talk down the would-be-murderer. She suspects that Shinichi has already figured which one of the suspects is the murderer in the ryokan case, but Shinichi is unable to reveal the truth because the hostage taker would then kill the named culprit and then himself. Sera's plan changed when she noticed the lights from the police snipers on the building across from Mouri Detective Agency. She explains to Ran in detail the names and functions of the various police divisions responsible for hostage situations, and tells Ran in a roundabout fashion that this situation will end with the hostage taker being killed by the police.

Sera launches a plan to bring the hostage taker into the snipers' range by telling him he should charge Ran's phone battery. Ran foils Sera's intentions by shutting the curtains, blocking the snipers' shot. To Sera's utter astonishment, Ran tells her that she doesn't want to see anyone die in front of her and declares that "Shinichi won't allow anyone to die. He absolutely wouldn't!"

The book with unturned pages (774)
Sera and Ran take the opportunity to disable the hostage taker when he loses his composure and grip on the detonator after Shinichi tricks him into believing his sister committed suicide. Sera yells for the waiting bomb squad to secure the area. With the hostage taker arrested, Shinichi then reveals the true culprit. Sera realizes the mistake in her deduction and explains the correct timeline of events before the murder. Sometime soon after the conclusion of the case, Sera, walking with Ran and Sonoko speculates aloud that there must be some reason Shinichi left Agasa's before Ran could meet him there. She then exclaims that "due to what just happened, she really gets it", that Conan and Shinichi are on very good terms with one another, and that Ran "is tougher than Sera thought". Conan isn't sure what to make of these last comments.

Video Site (775-777)
Sera stops Genta and Mitsuhiko outside of Agasa's house to ask them if they are acquaintances of Professor Agasa's. The topic of Shinichi comes up when she talks to the two detective boys about the prior hostage case. Mitsuhiko mentions that Haibara told them to keep Shinichi's involvement secret. After asking about Haibara, Sera mentions that she saw Haibara in one of the professor's online videos. Next, Sera asks who is currently living in the Kudo house because she saw the curtains shift slightly. The detective boys tell her that Subaru Okiya has been staying there since his apartment burnt down. Sera cryptically comments with a smirk on her face, "And here I thought that someone had just settled in without permission...But it seems I was just getting worked up over nothing..." while looking up at where Okiya Subaru is hiding.

At the end of the case, Sera is in her hotel room deleting various files. One of her deleted files was a still image from Agasa's video blown up to show Haibara reflected in Agasa's glasses. This indicates that shee is not only keeping an eye on conan but also on haibara . But we

Speculation
Sera knew Conan and Ran's identities before they introduced themselves. Although she claimed to know Ran from Karate tournaments, she additionally recognized Conan as a detective. This may indicate Sera has done research or follows stories about Conan's achievements or that she has had direct or indirect contact with Conan and Ran. However, Ran and Conan didn't recognize Sera. Sera might be one of Ran's martial arts rivals, although Ran, did not recognize her. In file 771, it is revealed that she also knows Professor Agasa, although she calls him "Professor whatshisname".

Shuichi Akai's younger sister
Sera might be the younger sister of Shuichi Akai. Sera has bags under her eyes identical to Shuichi Akai's. Also, Sera Masumi's name is also incredibly similar to Mobile Suit Gundam character Sayla Mass (セイラ・マス, Seira Masu). Akai's name is derived from Sayla Mass's older brother's name, Char Anzable.
Also, Conan said he has a feeling he had met her before.
Sera lived in Japan until three years ago when her family moved to America. This matches with the time when Akai was infiltrating the Organization. The family's move to America could be the FBI's attempt to protect them should something go wrong with Akai's mission.
However, no matter how long they waited, Agase did not return and rain began to pour. With Conan's suggestion, the Detective Boys entered a nearby village. After Conan receives a call from Agase that he would be there in two hours, the Detective Boys decided to ask the person playing the piano if they could wait inside. However, the house had hidden secrets and when the Detective Boys realized that they had just walked into the house of a kidnapper, they knew that the culprit was after them too.
Conan assures them it will be safe to search the house as the culprit is playing the piano. He has the Detective Boys sing a song in the piano room and catches the boy watching them and befriends him. The boy, Keita Onoda, is a piano prodigy to which the kidnapper abducted to allow his daughter to win a piano competition. After reading the last page in the dairy, they realize the kidnapper plans to suicide in the bathroom and manage to save him. In the aftermath, Keita's mother does not push charges due to Keita's defense.
Will-o'-The-Wisp Chapter
Mori takes Ran, Kazuha, Conan, and Heiji to the Inubushi household where they are introduced to the family. They learn about the legend passed down in the Inubushi family where their ancestor set his dog on fire after mistakenly assuming the dog killed his daughter while in reality, the dog saved his daughter. The ancestor was then killed in a house fire and the myth of the Inubushi curse was passed down. Conan and Heiji decide to investigate the headstone of the supposed dog when they witness Saki Inubushi fall from a cliff. Saki claims an ablaze inugami chased her and dies shortly after. Conan and Heiji discover flaming dog-prints atop the cliff establishing Saki's story. Inspector Misao Yamamura is called to the scene and joins them on their investigation. They discover that the other three victims had a pachinko ball, table tennis ball, and marble beside their bodies. Conan and Heiji return to Saki's crime scene to investigate. Ran and Kazuha feed the family dog and are confronted by the inugami.

Footsteps Chapter
Ran and Kazuha retreat inside the house and discover the inugami is gone. Conan and Heiji's investigation leads them to find conclusive evidence Saki's death was planned by the culprit. After hearing Ran and Kazuha's story, they realize the culprit is housing the inugami nearby and investigate an abandoned cabin. Inside the cabin yeilds evidence of a dog living there. Nearby, Tomoaki Inubashi is pounced by the inugami and receives minor burns; nearby an onion is found. Heiji asks Miyuki Inubashi about the family history and learns that Tsunechika had planned names for all eight of his illegitimate children which are based on the eight virtues of confucianism

Chapter of Princess
Satomi attempts to leave her room and collapses; she is found holding onto a broken Buddhist prayer beads with a black bead four down from the top. Later that night, they discover a letter signed by Miyuki confessing to the crime and is at the abandoned cabin. Conan and co head there and discover the cabin covered in gasoline and the inugami running towards it. Conan catches the inugami revealing the fire effect was created by imitation fire clothing with remote controlled lights. The flaming dog-prints were caused by modified lighters placed on the ground and tied to a wire with a hoop at the end. The dog had a mesh-enclosed charcoal tied to its tail, and when passing over the lighters, ignited them. When the dog retrieved the hoop, the lighter came with it, explaining how the lighters were not found after creating the dog-prints. Heiji points out Tomoaki as the culprit, evidenced by the inugami recognizing him as his master, and Satomi's prayer beads. The beads indicated the fourth of the eight virtues which is found in Tomoaki's name. As Tomoaki is taken into custody, he reveals he wanted to increase his inheritance in order to maintain the Inubushi household for Satomi.
When he confronted the two conmen, Shinichi was blindsided by Gin and was forced to swallow the poison.

In a sickening twist, Shinichi was left to die in the park. But the poison; APTX 4869 caused a not very common side effect as it entered Shinichi Kudo’s bloodstream. It changed the appearance of his body and it began to resemble the features of a 7 year old. Shinichi Kudo had now morphed into a 7 year old boy.
Case Closed, known as Meitantei Conan (名探偵コナン?, lit. Great Detective Conan, officially translated as Detective Conan) in Japan, is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama. The series is serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday since February 2, 1994, and has been collected in 71 tankōbon volumes as of November 2010. Due to legal considerations with the name Detective Conan, the English language release was renamed Case Closed.[1] The story follows the adventures of Jimmy Kudo, a prodigious young detective who was inadvertently transformed into a child after being poisoned.

Since its publication, Case Closed has spawned a substantial media franchise. The manga has been adapted into an ongoing animated television series by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation and TMS Entertainment; the animated series has reached its twentieth season. The series has spawned two original video animation series, fourteen animated feature films, two live action dramas, numerous video games, and many types of Case Closed-related merchandise. A two-hour television special titled Lupin the 3rd vs Detective Conan was aired on March 27, 2009, and featured a crossover with the series Lupin III.

Funimation Entertainment licensed the anime series for North American broadcast in 2003 under the name Case Closed with the characters given Americanized names. The anime premiered on Cartoon Network as part of their Adult Swim programming block and was discontinued due to low ratings. The first six films were released on Region 1 DVD in North America. Viz Media later licensed the manga series for English-language publication in North America and used Funimation's renamed title and cast. As of January 2011, 37 volumes have been published by Viz Media.

Compilation volumes of the manga have sold over 120 million copies in Japan. In 2001, the manga was awarded 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category. The anime adaptation has been well received and ranked in the top twenty in Animage's polls between 1996 and 2001. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Case Closed often ranked in the top six. Both manga and anime have had positive response from critics for its plot and cases.

Plot

Jimmy Kudo is a 17-year-old high school prodigy who frequently helps the police to solve cases.[1] During an investigation, he is attacked by two criminals, codenamed Gin and Vodka, from the syndicate called the Black Organization. They force him to ingest an experimental poison, APTX 4869, which is supposed to kill him, and leave him to die. A rare side-effect of the poison, however, transforms Kudo's body into that of a child instead of killing him.

Adopting the pseudonym Conan Edogawa, Kudo hides his identity to investigate the Black Organization. He intends to pretend to be a child until he can find enough evidence to apprehend the syndicate, after which he can then safely find and administer a cure for his current condition. Edogawa enrolls at Teitan elementary school and forms the Junior Detective League with three other children in his class: Amy Yoshida, Mitch Tsuburaya, and George Kojima. To further cover up his activities, he moves in with his childhood friend Rachel Moore, whose father, Richard, works as a private investigator.Kudo continues to solve criminal cases as Conan, but usually poses as Richard Moore with the help of special gadgets invented by his neighbor and friend, Hiroshi Agasa.

Shiho Miyano, a member of the Black Organization and creator of APTX 4869, tries to leave the syndicate after her sister's murder, but is held captive by them. She attempts to commit suicide by ingesting APTX 4869; however, like Kudo, she is transformed into a child. She manages to escape and enrolls in Conan's school under the pseudonym, Anita Hailey. She joins the Junior Detective League and assists Conan in his investigations on the Black Organization. Conan's quest has led him to help the FBI to plant a CIA agent, Kir, inside the Black Organization as an undercover spy.

In 2007, Aoyama hinted he had the ending planned out but he has no intention of ending the series yet.

Manga

In 1994, the Japanese manga market was experiencing a craze with the mystery genre after the publishing of the Kindaichi Case Files series. Gosho Aoyama began drawing Meitantei Conan at this time during the craze; the first chapter of his work appeared in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday on February 2.He cites the stories of Arsène Lupin, Sherlock Holmes and the samurai films by Akira Kurosawa as influences on his work. Aoyama says he spends an average of four hours for each new case in his manga; a more complicated story can take more than twelve hours. Each case spans several chapters, and is resolved at the end where characters explain the details of their solutions in simple terms;A database consisting of all the cases from the manga was launched in 2007.Aoyama tries to keep the language simple to help his readers follow the story.

Meitantei Conan outlasted the mystery genre craze, becoming the 24th longest running manga series with over 700 chapters released in Japan. The individual chapters are collected by Shogakukan in a series of tankōbon volumes. The first volume was released on June 18, 1994; as of February 2011, volume 71 have been released. Gosho Aoyama's assistants have also written and published 36 volumes of their own side stories of Meitantei Conan.

The manga has been licensed for publishing across the world in countries such as China, France, Germany, Indonesia, and Finland. In the United States, it is published by Viz Media, who obtained the license on June 1, 2004.[20] Following Funimation Entertainment's lead, the Viz Media translation released under the name Case Closed with renamed characters.[21] Viz Media released the first English-language volume on September 7, 2004, and the latest—volume 37—on January 11, 2011. Victor Gollancz Ltd used Viz Media's translations to distribute the series in the in the United Kingdom.
The anime version of Meitantei Conan is produced by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation and TMS Entertainment.[25][26] Directed by Kenji Kodama and Yasuichiro Yamamoto, Conan's cases have been adapted into 25-minute episodes.[25] More than 600 episodes have aired in Japan since the anime's premiere on January 8, 1996 making it the sixth longest running anime series.[27][28] Initially, Shogakukan collected and released the episodes on VHS video cassettes between June 1996, and October 2006.[29][30] Four hundred and twenty-six episodes were released on VHS until Shogakukan abandoned the format and switched over to DVDs, starting from the first episode.[31] The fourth volume of season 19 is slated for release on April 22, 2011.[32] For the fifteenth anniversary of the anime series, the series is being made available for video on demand.[33][34] Meitantei Conan is later broadcasted in North America on NHK's cable network TV Japan.[35]

In 2003, the first 104 episodes of the regular animation series were licensed by Funimation Entertainment for distribution in North America and was retitled Case Closed because of legal considerations.[1][36] Meitantei Conan has also been released in other languages.[37][38] Case Closed debuted on Cartoon Network as part of their Adult Swim programming block on May 24, 2004;[39] no more than 50 episodes were licensed from Funimation due to low ratings.[40] The Canadian channel YTV picked up the Case Closed series and broadcast 22 episodes between April 7, 2006, and September 2, 2006, before taking it off the air.[41][42][43] Funimation made the series available with the launch of the Funimation Channel in November 2005 and was temporary available on Colours TV during its syndication with the Funimation Channel.[44][45] A separate English adaptation of the series by Animax Asia premiered in the Philippines on January 18, 2006, under the name Detective Conan.[46][47] Because Animax were unable to obtain further TV broadcast rights, their version comprised 52 episodes. The series continued with reruns until August 7, 2006, when it was removed from the station.[48][49][50]

Funimation also released DVDs of their dubbed series beginning August 24, 2004.[51] Initially, the releases were done in single DVDs and future episodes were released in seasonal boxes; as of 2009, they have released 130 episodes dubbed in English.[52] The seasonal boxes were later re-released in redesigned boxes entitled Viridian edition.[53][54]
The first four theme music were released by Universal Music Group and all releases thereafter were by Being Inc.
In 2006, a live action drama focusing on Jimmy Kudo was aired by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the manga's first publication.[92] Another episode was aired in the following year.[93] These TV specials were produced by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation and TMS entertainment, and featured award-winning actors; Shun Oguri portrayed the teenage Kudo, Takanori Jinnai as Richard Moore and Tomoka Kurokawa was cast as Rachel Moore.[94] Both dramas were released on DVDs after their broadcast on television.[95][96] A third special with a new cast is planned for release in 2011.[97]

The dramas present stories in which Jimmy Kudo investigates mysteries in his teenage form. The scenario of the first drama, "Meitantei Conan: Kudo Shinichi he no Chosenjo" (名探偵コナン- 工藤新一への挑戦状?, lit. Detective Conan: Shinichi Kudo's Written Challenge), takes place before Kudo's ingestion of APTX 4869 and is about an abduction case on board a cruise ship.[94] In the second drama, "Kudo Shinichi no Fukkatsu! Kuro no Soshiki to no Taiketsu" (工藤新一の復活!〜黒の組織との対決?, lit. Shinichi Kudo Returns! Showdown with the Black Organization), Kudo returns to his teenage form after eating a certain cake and has to protect Miyano, who likewise has returned to her adult state, from the Black Organization.[96]
Shogakukan have also produced many books spun off from the series. Fifty volumes of a film comic series were published in Japan between June 1996 and August 2000, covering the first 143 episodes of the anime, though some episodes were skipped.[101][102] Five additional film comics entitled 5 Juuyou Shorui (5重要書類?, lit. 5 Important Documents) were published between July 2001 and January 2002 and covered selected episodes between 162–219.[103] Five novels were published between May 2005 and July 2008.[104] Thirteen official guide books were published between June 1997 and April 2009.[105] Shogakukan has also published digest books, educational and puzzle books.[106][107][108]
In North America, Score Entertainment published the Case Closed Trading Card Game on June 29, 2005.[109][110] The game entails the use of three customized decks of cards, which players buy and collect. Representing characters, events, and objects in Case Closed, these cards are used by players to fulfill certain conditions to solve a case and win the game. Certain cards are used to foil the progress of the player's opponents.[111][112] An English unofficial guidebook to the series titled The Case Closed Casebook: An Essential Guide was published by DH Publishing Inc. on March 25, 2008.[113]
Reception

Meitantei Conan has sold more than 120 million volumes volumes of manga in Japan;individual volumes frequently appear on the lists of best-selling manga there. It won the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2001, and respondents in an online poll for Japanese citizens in their mid-twenties voted Meitantei Conan as one of the top three manga they wanted to continue running in publication.Case Closed appeared in The New York Times best selling manga during the week ending on October 24, 2010.In France, the series was nominated for the Angoulême Festival Graphic Novel award among the Japanese selection. In the United States, Case Closed received praises from Mania.com's Eduardo M. Chavez and IGN's A. E. Sparrow for its stories—telling the mysteries and how they were unfolded by the investigations of Conan and gang. Sparrow called the style of the series a mix of Scooby-Doo and Sherlock Holmes, while Chavez believed the manga had appeal to readers of all ages.

The animated adaptation of the series was also popular in Japan, appearing in the top six of Japanese TV Rankings at various times. The television series ranked among the top twenty in polls conducted by anime magazine Animage from 1996 to 2001.[126] It also placed better than twenty-third in polls for the top-one-hundred anime conducted by Japanese television network TV Asahi in 2005–06.The series received considerable airtime in China; it was the second most broadcasted animation there in 2004.[130] Several of the franchise's films were nominated for awards in their home country. The ninth film was nominated for the feature film category at the 5th Annual Tokyo Anime Awards, and the next five films were nominees for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year in their respective years of release.

In the United States, the dubbed series faced several negative reactions toward its changes to localize the content for North American audiences. Jeffrey Harris of IGN found it pointless to change the names of the characters, and Anime News Network's Carl Kimlinger said that the changes of certain Japanese cultural references rendered several parts of the mysteries and their investigation illogical. The voice-overs proved to be a mixed bag for Carlo Santos, who reviewed the first DVD release of Case Closed for Anime News Network; he said that while the main characters sounded like "real people", the secondary ones "[came] off as caricatures".Lori Lancaster of Mania.com described Case Closed as "a clever series that had mysteries at every corner", noting the "bizarre" and "interesting" nature of each case.IGN's Chris Wyatt was positive to the manner the cases were set up, relating them to Agatha Christie's "closed room" mysteries. He described the series as "Inspector Gadget meets Law & Order but in an anime style." His colleague, Harris, however, expressed annoyance with repetitive elements in the show and the contrived methods the series uses to keep Conan's identity a secret from certain characters.

In 2006, the Japanese government used Conan in campaigns to help promote crime awareness among children.Targeting the same audience, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs used Conan and his friends in two pamphlets: one to promote the ministry's mission, the other to introduce the 34th G8 summit held in the country in 2010.Several characters in the series featured in the sixth installment of the Anime, Heroes and Heroines commemorative stamp series issued by Japan Post in 2006.Aoyama and his creations are celebrated in his hometown Hokuei, Tottori; a museum with exhibits of his work is located there, and several bronze statues of Jimmy Kudo, Conan Edogawa, and Rachel Moore are installed in various locations throughout the town.

Part 1
Kogoro appears in a commercial to promote white chocolate for White Day and is invited to a chocolate company's party. Kogoro, Ran, and Conan attend and are introduced to the company presidents, Taruto Urai and his wife Hoshie Urai. During the party, Taruto dies from cyanide poisoning. Inspector Megure and his Officers are called to investigate the death. The investigation leads Hoshie to be the prime suspect. As she is taken away to be searched, Hoshie trips and falls on a table causing many lemon tea glasses to shatter. Meanwhile, evidence of a medicinal wafer containing poison is found in Urai's mouth suggesting suicide. Conan is ascertain Hoshie to be the culprit and investigates on how she delivered the poison to her husband.

Part 2
Conan investigates and when discovering the method, tranquilizers Kogoro and explains how Hoshie committed the murder. He explains the burn marks on Hoshie's napkin indicate cyanide was on the napkin and the poison was placed on a lemon slice. Conan elaborates explaining how Taruto was famously known to hate sour things, and had planned to surprise his guest by eating sour food with the use of synsepalum dulcificum. Upon testing if the synsepalum dulcificum was still in effect, Taruto ate the poisoned lemon slice. While down, Hoshie took the lemon and placed the medicinal wafer in her husband's mouth and hid the lemon slice among the others during her fall. Conan concludes that Hoshie's fingerprint and Taruto's saliva should be on the poisoned lemon slice. Hoshie confesses revealing her motive is revenge for her former boyfriend who Taruto pushed to suicide. On the way home, Ran is visibly saddened when she is the only one to have not received a White Day gift but is cheered up when she discovers white throat lozenge from a postage left by Shinichi.
