== Background ==
Little is known about Rei Furuya as a PSB investigator. Most of his appearances are as the Café Poirot waiter and private eye Tooru Amuro or as the [[Black Organization]] operative Bourbon.

Rei makes his first appearance as Tooru Amuro when acting as a private detective. He meets [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and the Mouris while disguised as a waiter to help a client with a case.<ref name=f793>[[Volume 75#Private Eye|Volume 75, Files 9-11: "Private Eye"]]</ref> When Sleeping Kogoro appears to solve a case relating to his client before he can, he claims he wants to learn from [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]].<ref name=f793 /> Rei succeeds in becoming his apprentice by offering him a hefty tuition fee as an incentive.<ref name=f793 /> Thus, he begins working at Café Poirot, right under the Mouri Detective Agency, to remain close to Kogoro.<ref name=f793 /> Presently, he continues to work under this cover.

As a child, likely, Rei often got into fights. At some point in the past, Rei began infiltrating the [[Black Organization]] for the PSB, eventually gaining the codename Bourbon. In the Organization, he works as an agent specializing in deduction and information gathering. [[Gin]] even goes as far as to call him a 'great detective like Sherlock Holmes'.<ref name=704p15/>

==== Rivalry with Shuichi Akai ====
During his time in the Organization, at some point Rei became the rival of [[Shuichi Akai]] (alias Dai Moroboshi), he considered Shuichi as a worthy opponent, wanted to compare his capacity with Shuichi, and thinks that he is the only one capable of defeating Shuichi. Despite the rivalry, they may have still worked well together. During the [[The Unfriendly Girls Band|Unfriendly Girls Band]] case, [[Masumi Sera]] mentions that she spotted Rei, Shuichi, and Hiromitsu on the same train platform.<ref name=937p12>[[Volume 88#Girls Band Murder Case|Volume 88, File 11 (937): "The Disappeared Clue"]].</ref> As Shuichi and Hiromitsu were holding instrument bags that may have held rifles, it's possible they were on a mission together. Rei additionally suspected that Shuichi was a spy for the FBI,<ref name=824p5/> which turned out to be the case.

Rei's animosity towards Akai Shuichi appears to stem from the death of Hiromitsu, a fellow spy from the PSB and his childhood friend. At some point in the past, Hiromitsu was found out as a NOC and confronted by Shuichi on top of a rooftop.<ref name=954p1 /> During this confrontation, Hiromitsu stole away Shuichi's gun and attempted to commit suicide with it. While Shuichi succeeded in talking him down him temporarily, the sound of Rei's steps coming up the stairs distracted Shuichi, allowing Hiromitsu to commit suicide. And so Shuichi, not knowing that Rei was a fellow NOC, pretended that he had been the one to kill Hiromitsu.<ref name=954p1 />

While Rei is aware that Hiromitsu committed suicide,<ref name=954p1 /> he doesn't think it is because of the sound from his steps, believes that Shuichi forced or pressured Hiromitsu into doing it. Thus, he still blames Shuichi for Hiromitsu's death.

== Personality ==

Rei has a cheerful personality. He is also generous, bringing a plate of sandwiches for the detective agency bought with his money. In more serious situations, he seems to be patient, keeping calm even while others are abusing him. Although somewhat of a "cool type", he does not hide his emotions and is quite expressive. Like other detectives in ''[[Detective Conan]]'', he enjoys presenting his deductions about cases to others. Kogoro calls him "effeminate".

Rei has a darker side. He is manipulative, tricking others into performing certain actions so he can gather information. He favors using psychological traps and catching his enemies off-guard. Rei can also be extremely cruel in the pursuit of goals. He planned to run over and hospitalize an elementary school teacher with his car to lure out FBI agents, and he would have allowed a suspect to destroy his exonerating evidence to test Kogoro. Rei alternates between going out of his way to care about the well-being of others and ignoring them when it is inconvenient. As Scar Akai, he saved Conan at the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|Teito bank heist]] but neglected to inform Ran and Kogoro later when he noticed that Conan might have been kidnapped by a murderer in [[Detectives' Nocturne]].

[[Gin]] says Bourbon has a secretive personality like [[Vermouth]], and that no one can ever guess what he's up to or what he will do.<ref name=703p3/> [[Vodka]] says that Bourbon hates Shuichi Akai even more than Gin does, presumably because Rei thinks that Akai killed Scotch.<ref name=703p3/> Bourbon believes he is the only person capable of killing Akai.<ref name=703p3/> Gin said that if Bourbon found out Akai was alive, he would surely boast that his suspicion was correct.<ref name=703p3/> Gin and Bourbon probably don't get along and they don't seem to communicate with one another.<ref name=703p3/> 

Despite his darker side he still has a true Japanese true spirit. He shows humanity even toward an enemy. For example, in Zero's Tea Time Chapter 12, he wanted to make Camel leave to not get into traffic. In chapter 34 he practices with him, and in chapter 44, when Camel saved chief, he thanked him and prepared a glass of water which impressed Camel. Rei is also a gentleman like Takagi, as stated by his friend Wataru date.

Rei is a good-looking man (claimed by [[Sonoko]] and [[Ayumi]]) with dark skin, lighter than, but closer to [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]]'s color and has brown hair <ref> "Let's Talk with Gosho Day 2014": Amuro-san’s white hair… is that dyed? Aah. Rather than white, it’s brown. I can’t answer this. His dark skin too, there is a profound meaning behind it. (laughs) </ref> He wears glasses at first, but it is unknown if he needs them because he was using them to conceal his identity at the time and takes them off midway through the case and has not had them on since. == Mission ==
Bourbon's primary mission was to search for the escaped scientist [[Shiho Miyano]], which the [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] spy [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] heard about and informed the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] of. He also had a second secret mission fueled by his hunch that his archenemy Shuichi Akai should not have died so easily;<ref name=703p3>Manga [[Volume 67]], File 7, page 3: "The Truth Amidst the Snowstorm"</ref> he received the [[The Boss|boss]]' permission to verify Shuichi's death. He wound up protecting Conan while disguised as [[Scar Akai]] at the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|Teito Bank]], and as Rei helped Conan get out of a [[Episode 671|kidnapping situation]] and doctored him when Conan [[Conan in a Locked Room|took a racket to the head]]. Conan initially treats him in a somewhat friendly manner, though he privately thinks "another annoying person has shown up" when he learns Rei will be joining Kogoro on cases. However, after he finds out [[The Jet-Black Mystery Train|Amuro's membership in the Black Organization]], though, Conan has been relatively nervous about him being near [[Ran Mouri|Ran]]. This was made even worse when Rei caught him attempting to tranquilize Kogoro, but due to Rei's attentiveness, he was unable to and had to give hints to Kogoro instead. After he helped to solve the [[The Unsolved Cocktail Case|Bunny Girls Case]], Amuro broke into the Kudo home, so that he can find out information about [[Kudo Shinichi]]. He had the altercation with an [[Akai Shuichi|unmasked Akai]], and both of [[Yusaku Kudo|Shinichi's]] [[Yukiko Kudo|parents]] turned on the light, so that the four of them can have a meeting. Currently, it is unknown what was discussed in that meeting, other than Conan planned it.

Shuichi always shows respect towards Rei, he admits Rei's capability and feels interested every time he faces Rei, he also makes Rei feel quite confused sometimes. Their relationship is becoming more bitter and dramatic when Rei misunderstood Shuichi killed his best friend - [[Scotch]], but actually, the one who indirectly caused Scotch to die was Rei himself. Shuichi chooses to keep a secret, continues to let Rei misunderstand him instead of letting Rei know that painful truth. Over time, Shuichi appears to help and protect Rei in some cases, he gradually wants to compensate for the losses which Rei has experienced, he also reveals that he doesn't want to be Rei's enemy. For now, Rei is temporarily lowering his hatred to working well with Shuichi and Conan in destroying the Black Organization.

[[Vermouth]] and Bourbon keep close contact with one another and seem to be closer to one another than, say, Bourbon and Gin. Bourbon specializes in intelligence gathering, so he likely belongs to the same [[Black_Organization#Organization_structure_and_divisions|reconnaissance division of the Black Organization]] as Vermouth. While it is still uncertain whether Bourbon is working directly under Vermouth, she seems to keep track of his actions during his missions at times,<ref>[[Detectives' Nocturne]]</ref> and he also often informs her about his discoveries or his plans.<ref>[[Volume 78|File 818]] (Bourbon was said to have told Vermouth about Sherry's video); [[Volume 78|File 827]] (Bourbon tells Vermouth that he is now interested in "Sleeping Kogoro")</ref> Vermouth helped Bourbon create a [[Scar Akai|disguise]] that looked like Akai so he can investigate his enemy's death. Later, she somehow helped him approach [[Kogoro]] because he suspected that the detective was in contact with [[Sherry]]. Bourbon made a promise to Vermouth not to let any harm comes to Conan and Ran no matter what happens, and she calls to ask him if he will be upholding it after the car chase in [[Detectives' Nocturne]]. 

The two have shown to be working together, not unlike Gin and Vodka, though the bond and trust between them are somewhat lacking. In addition to Bourbon's promise to Vermouth, he is also aware of her secret relationship with the boss, as noted at the end of the Scarlet Showdown. Bourbon utilizes this information to enlist Vermouth's assistance in his investigations, arranging for her secret to be released to the other members of the Organization if he is killed by her.

The next day Rei takes the day off from his job at Poirot cafe. To confirm his theory, Rei once again disguises himself as [[Scar Akai]] to gauge her reaction. Suddenly, Masumi sees him in the crowd ahead, and just like Jodie and Camel, Masumi becomes just as shocked by his appearance. She runs after him, but he disappears before she can catch him. Ran wonders who Masumi was chasing, but Masumi replies she thought it was someone she knew. Masumi silently appends in her mind that it would be impossible for the man she was chasing to be the person she thinks it was. While Rei watches her from a little ahead, confirming his suspicion that Masumi is related to Akai.

During [[The Unfriendly Girls Band]], Masumi recalls a time that she saw her brother in a train station four years ago with Hiromitsu (under the aliases Scotch), who taught her the basics of a bass guitar. Masumi believes that the man who approached them at that time wearing a hat that hid his face must have been Rei. However, each time she asks him if they have met before, he avoids the question. Gin has revealed that Bourbon is as secretive as Vermouth. Bourbon has shown a friendly relationship with Vermouth but not with other members so far. Bourbon even hid some details from Conan. It is possible that Bourbon, as well as Kir, is a member who doesn't like the Organization. Date himself revealed that Bourbon was the best man at the police academy and that Bourbon was a gentleman like Takagi, too. Besides, at the end of Takagi's Kidnapping Case, Bourbon refers to Date as "my friend", which means he had no option but to cut all means of contact with him for his safety.

Elena and Atsushi died in a fire at their research facility<ref> Manga [[Volume 89]], File 11 (948)</ref> shortly after [[Shiho Miyano|Shiho]] was born.<ref> Manga [[Volume 89]], File 2 (939)</ref> Most of their work was destroyed, and their deaths were claimed to be an accident by [[Pisco]], who apparently was close with the couple. However, Elena and Atsushi seemed to know that something was going to happen to them. == Appearance and personality ==
Elena is British and has long blonde hair. In every instance so far she has been shown wearing glasses which cover her eyes. She has also been shown wearing a lab coat.

Since Elena has not appeared or interacted with other characters much on screen, much of her personality has been described by others. Elena seems to have been a very quiet person which has lead to people thinking she didn't understand much Japanese. However we know that she is fluent. Agasa seems to think that she is more suspicious than her "mad scientist" husband, Atsushi.<ref>[[Volume 39|Volume 39, File 6, Page 6: "Torn Friendship 1"]]; [[A Friendship That Can't Be Bought|Episode 329: "A Friendship That Can't Be Bought"]]</ref> Elena seems to have had a generally nice personality, which has earned her the nickname "Hell Angel" inside the [[Black Organization]] which implies her niceness on the backdrop of the criminal organization. Given the tapes she left behind, Elena seems to have loved her daughters. That said, Elena left her daughters at the mercy of the Black Organization even though she knew that she was going to "disappear" in advance.

== Skills ==
Due to her work on drug related projects for the [[Black Organization]] she would have to be skilled at biochemistry. She made significant advances on her research project working with her lab mates on creating a "dream drug" that they were calling "[[Silver Bullet]]". It is unknown how much progress was made, only that her daughter [[Shiho Miyano]] was able to make further advances on a project called "[[APTX 4869]]".

Despite her quiet nature and foreign appearance, Elena can speak Japanese fluently. This was called into question by one of the workers living at Atsushi's house. In the anime he later sees Elena talking with Akemi quietly.

Approximately thirty years ago Atsushi moved out of the house he inherited from his father to go do research. He left the home to a childhood friend of his to open a design company. A short time later he sent a wedding invitation to his friend. At a point twenty years ago Atsushi and his wife, Elena, and his daughter, Akemi, came back to the house with something very important to tell the friend and stayed overnight, however the friend who was living there was busy and away for a few days. The other members of the company remember Elena being very quiet. They thought it was because she didn't speak Japanese very well, but Akemi spoke it perfectly. Atsushi had been looking out the window frequently and a black car with grey windows was parked nearby quite often. The three of them left without leaving any message behind. Akemi returned at a much more recent point of time (approximately one week before dying) to use the bathroom and hid something in the water tank. Twice someone had broken into the house and broken the lock on the bathroom door, possibly to find the item and spy on the occupants. Haibara reveals that her mother's nickname in the organization was {{nihongo|"Hell Angel"|ヘルエンジェル|Heru Enjeru}} and she translates it into Japanese as {{nihongo|3="jigoku ni ochita tenshi"|2=地獄に落ちた天使|4=the angel that fell to hell}}. At the end of the main case, Conan reveals that the items that Akemi hid in the bathroom were cassette tapes sealed in a plastic bag. The four tapes are numbered in 5 intervals ending with 20. Conan says that the first two tapes were empty and began to listen to the 11-15 tape. He stops and hands the headphones to Haibara saying that its something he shouldn't hear. The tape begins with "To the 11-year old Shiho, happy brithday!" The tapes are recorded messages from Elena to a more grown-up Shiho who she would have not been able to meet.

I'm really..." However this is all we get to hear of the tape. (Later in the series we get the continuation of the quote.)

After receiving a message from Vermouth on her phone while on the train, Haibara freaks out and ditches the main group and hides around the corner as to not be detected. She then has a flashback to the words that her mother left her on the tapes (that were recovered 400 chapters ago). This version was translated slightly different than the original: "Alright, so the next time will be your 19th birthday... bye-bye see you soon... oh yes, maybe its about time I told you... the truth is, your mom is making a truly terrifying drug at the moment... my lab mates are getting really excited about it, they say it's like a "dream drug"... your dad and I are putting our hopes on it and calling it... the silver bullet! But in order to complete the drug, your dad and I will have to leave you and your sister... please understand Shiho..."

At the end of the case [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]]'s identity is revealed and he tells the person he believes to be Shiho that she looks very much like her mother. He reveals that he has met both of the Miyano parents as well as Akemi. However that Shiho happened to be Kaitou Kid in a mask with Haibara feeding him lines.

She advises him against fighting and tells him that he shouldn't come if gets into another fight. In 2014 [[Gosho Aoyama]] did an interview with the Da Vinci magazine in which he revealed that "Two mothers will be revealed to be sisters". Many people jumped in with the idea that [[Mary Sera|Mary]], the [[Akai family]] mother, would be one of them since she is a recently introduced character of the arc that was happening at the time. Additional speculation began to link Elena as the other sister due to her being mentioned in the same question of the same interview. Furthermore, the two are both British.

In November 2015, the manga [[Volume 89#Department Store Stabbing Case|Department Store Stabbing Case]], Conan noticed some left over make-up on [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]]'s face that made it look like she had the [[Akai family]] eye bags. Conan immediately began to suspect that Haibara may be related to Mary. At this stage in the series we have not seen Elena Miyano's eyes for comparison.

In an interview in Singapore in 2016, Gosho confirmed that [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Akemi Miyano]] are cousins. It is stated at 34:23 in the audio link.<ref>Aoyama Gosho's Q&A with fans. Hundreds of minor characters have been created and are always given backgrounds, motives, and personalities that put them under suspicion during the investigation.

The English adaption dubbed by [[Funimation]], called ''Case Closed'', has different names than the one in the manga published by [[Viz Media]].

The series was created and is drawn by [[Gosho Aoyama]]. The protagonists from his earlier series [[Magic Kaito]] look very similar: [[Kaitou Kid]] has made a number of appearances as himself in the anime and manga of the series. The main protagonist of the ''[[Detective Conan]]'' series, [[Shinichi Kudo]], and the protagonist of the ''Magic Kaito'' series, [[Kaito Kuroba]] are also similar. Hundreds of minor characters have been created and are always given backgrounds, motives, and personalities that put them under suspicion during the investigation.

The English adaption dubbed by [[Funimation]], called ''Case Closed'', has different names than the one in the manga published by [[Viz Media]].

The protagonists from his earlier series [[Magic Kaito]] look very similar: [[Kaitou Kid]] has made a number of appearances as himself in the anime and manga of the series. Hundreds of minor characters have been created and are always given backgrounds, motives, and personalities that put them under suspicion during the investigation.

The English adaption dubbed by [[Funimation]], called ''Case Closed'', has different names than the one in the manga published by [[Viz Media]].

Hundreds of minor characters have been created and are always given backgrounds, motives, and personalities that put them under suspicion during the investigation.
