== Background ==
Vermouth's background is very mysterious. She was friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were acting together under the name Sharon Vineyard, but she was even then secretly a member of the [[Black Organization]]. It is unknown for exactly how long she has been a member, but it is known that she had been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of herself and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard. After staging Sharon Vineyard's death, she now lives as "Chris" and continues to serve the Black Organization. At one point, some twenty years ago, she killed the parents of a little girl who would become the FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]], one of her most bitter enemies.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearence. She doesn’t seem to like the research that Ai and her parents engaged in, calling it “foolish.” <ref>[[Volume 42#File 434 - Rotten Apple|Volume 42, File 434: "Rotten Apple"]]</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "Silver Bullet". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

== Personality ==
Although she follows orders from [[Anokata|the boss]] and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is secretive and manipulative, even towards other Organization members. Vermouth is confident in her abilities, is very bold, and an expert at manipulating situations to her advantage: traits which allow her to single-handedly weave complex plots and take the upper hand even while she is being monitored by enemies. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Akai Shuuichi]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan, [[Ran]], and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] and Ran saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]].

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. It is frequently implied that Vermouth does not approve with the Organization's plans and is willing to quit, but fears the consequences of doing so openly. She is frequently shown to hold hopes that Conan is the 'silver bullet' that will eventually stop the Organization. She also retains personal feelings for persons who have earned a special place in her heart, such as Shinichi/Conan (as the son of her best friend) and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]].<ref name="e288">[[Shinichi Kudo's New York Case|Episode 288: Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, Part 3]].</ref> As a result, she is highly unwilling to do them any harm even when she is ordered to do so.

Vermouth is able to mimic anyone's appearance and voice exactly with her disguise and acting skills even after observing them for only a short period of time. Vermouth frequently utilizes latex masks. Although she may have known how to disguise prior to meeting [[Toichi Kuroba]], she studied disguise under him. Her disguise ability was first shown in [[The Mysterious Passenger]]<ref>[[Volume 29#File 287 - The Unseen Horror|Volume 29, File 287: "The Unseen Horror"]], [[The Mysterious Passenger|Episode 230: The Mysterious Passenger]]</ref> where she dressed as a male waiter to tease [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]].

Vermouth specializes in reconnaissance and infiltration, and has been shown to work very swiftly yet cautiously to rapidly acquire information. Her confidence and skill in disguise and imitation means she can execute bold plans that put her in very close contact with her targets and she can advance her plot even when they are suspicious of her. Without the aid of the other organization members, Vermouth successfully snuck into the [[Tokyo Metropolitan Police|Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters]] in order to steal the records of [[Mouri Kogoro]]'s cases. She later returned them when presumably the surveillance would be even higher after the police noticed the files were missing. She then single-handedly staked out the [[FBI]] who were lured out into watching Mouri Kogoro and uncovered their numbers, addresses, and ways to contact them.

===Stamina===
Vermouth is quite strong and has high pain tolerance. While she was disguised as a serial killer in New York City, Vermouth athletically vaults up from a dead hanging positioning over the railing of the stairwell to higher ground despite being shot in the side. She also shoots herself in the leg to escape the effects of sleeping gas, and then walks to a phone booth on that shot leg and with several broken ribs from an earlier altercation.

===Shooting===
As Vermouth pulled away in Jodie's car with broken ribs after her flak jacket absorbed a close range shotgun blast, she managed to aim a handgun backwards using the side mirror and shoot Araide's car's gas tank, causing it to explode. Akai is impressed she managed that difficult shot with her battered body. Earlier however, she failed to draw fast enough to shoot Jodie or Akai; in the first case, the gun was shot out of her hand, in the second, Akai fired first.

For some reason, Vermouth does not appear to age. In order to camouflage the fact that Sharon Vineyard and Chris Vineyard are the same person, Vermouth concocted personal histories for her real life cover roles in order to make them seem like different people. When Sharon and Chris Vineyard were revealed to be one and the same, at least part of the stated Vineyard family history was revealed to be a lie. It is unknown how much of the remainder is truthful, based on the truth, or outright fabrication because the primary source of the information is Vermouth herself who may have more to hide.

Little is known of Sharon Vineyard's mother and father. Jodie's father in the FBI was secretly investigating Vermouth twenty years before the current storyline.<ref name="f433" /> That is too young for Chris Vineyard to be in disguise as she is only 29 currently and would be 9 at the time. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

[[Conan]] suspects [[Pisco]] had help from another [[Black Organization]] member. He looks into [[Chris Vineyard]] and realizes that she is able to disguise herself and may be pretending to be someone close to him. [[Kogoro Mouri]]’s case records were stolen from the police department. Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. Conan's first suspect is [[Akai Shuuichi]] whose behavior seemed suspicious.<ref name="f291p11">[[Volume 29#File 291 - A Tiny Trace|Volume 29, File 291, page 11: "A Tiny Trace"]]</ref> After recognizes Akai in the P & A case<ref name="f326">[[Volume 32#File 326 - P & A|Volume 32, File 326-328: "P & A"]]</ref>, Conan shows sensitivity to the prospect of someone investigating them.<ref name="f332">[[Volume 33#File 332 - Bloody Valentine 2|Volume 33, File 332: "Bloody Valentine 2"]]</ref> Conan doesn't seem to suspect the person Vermouth has replaced, [[Tomoaki Araide|Dr. Araide]], yet because he was willing to use his voice changer in front of him.<ref name="f330">[[Volume 33#File 330 - Sato's Feelings|Volume 33, File 2: "Satou's feelings"]]</ref>

Conan gets his first tangible proof someone is investigating around him them when [[Takagi]] informs Conan all the records of [[Kogoro]]'s cases were stolen from the police station on the day of the bus hijack incident and later returned.<ref name="f336p9">[[Volume 33#File 336 - Clean Scent|Volume 33, File 336, pages 9-10: "Clean Scent"]]</ref> He begins to wonder who the target is and suspects Akai may be behind the incident because of the timing. Conan also begins to suspect the English teacher [[Jodie Starling|Jodie Santemillion]] and Dr. Araide as well because they were also on the bus.<ref name="f343p17">[[Volume 34#File 343 - Who Are You?|Volume 34, File 343, page 17: "Who Are You?"]]</ref> He isn't sure of the motive for taking the records although Conan wonders if someone is trying to lure him out or if the person returned the files because they already knew what Conan would do.<ref name="f336p9">[[Volume 34#File 341 - The Hint That Was Against|Volume 34, File 341: "The Hint That Was Against"]]</ref>

Conan's idea that Pisco had an accomplice among the other suspects has fully solidified. He has noticed one of the suspects who had a purple handkerchief, [[Chris Vineyard]], hasn't appeared in public since that case, thus Conan believes Chris is the Black Organization accomplice. He asks [[Agasa]] to go onto Chris's fansite and gather information on her past, interests, and habits<ref name="f341p3">[[Volume 34#File 341 - The Hint That Was Against|Volume 34, File 341, page 3: "The Hint That Was Against"]]</ref> and Agasa's investigation corroborates with Conan's deduction.<ref name="f344p9" /> Conan is already aware that Chris Vineyard has disguise abilities and may be in disguise as someone around him.<ref name="f343p17" />

At this point, Conan is still uncertain of Araide, Jodie, and Akai's allegiances. He learns from [[Ran]] that Akai Shuuichi was seen with a man in an [[FBI]] jacket during the New York case, causing Conan to wonder if the FBI is in Japan for some reason or the Black Organization infiltrated the American law enforcement.<ref name="f380p5">[[Volume 37#File 380 - White Snow... By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. Vermouth puts her plan to capture Haibara into action by calling Agasa's house as Dr. Araide saying he wants to take Haibara to a hospital because her cough hasn't gotten better.<ref name="f430p9">[[Volume 42#File 430 - The Haunted Ship Painted with Blood|Volume 42, File 430, page 9: "The Haunted Ship Painted with Blood"]]</ref> Conan is still unsure of Jodie's allegiance until she answers the door before Dr. Araide arrives. The murder was masterminded by Yoshiteru Araide's second wife, Yoko Araide. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathroom and put an electric shaver in the bathtub. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Akai Shuichi]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide. Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who hadn't existed a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.

Vermouth's background is very mysterious. She was friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were acting together under the name Sharon Vineyard, but she was even then secretly a member of the [[Black Organization]]. It is unknown for exactly how long she has been a member, but it is known that she had been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of herself and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard. After staging Sharon Vineyard's death, she now lives as "Chris" and continues to serve the Black Organization. At one point, some twenty years ago, she killed the parents of a little girl who would become the FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]], one of her most bitter enemies.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearence. She doesn’t seem to like the research that Ai and her parents engaged in, calling it “foolish.” <ref>[[Volume 42#File 434 - Rotten Apple|Volume 42, File 434: "Rotten Apple"]]</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "Silver Bullet". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

Although she follows orders from [[Anokata|the boss]] and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is secretive and manipulative, even towards other Organization members. Vermouth is confident in her abilities, is very bold, and an expert at manipulating situations to her advantage: traits which allow her to single-handedly weave complex plots and take the upper hand even while she is being monitored by enemies. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Akai Shuuichi]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan, [[Ran]], and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] and Ran saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]].

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. It is frequently implied that Vermouth does not approve with the Organization's plans and is willing to quit, but fears the consequences of doing so openly. She is frequently shown to hold hopes that Conan is the 'silver bullet' that will eventually stop the Organization. She later returned them when presumably the surveillance would be even higher after the police noticed the files were missing. She then single-handedly staked out the [[FBI]] who were lured out into watching Mouri Kogoro and uncovered their numbers, addresses, and ways to contact them.

Vermouth is quite strong and has high pain tolerance. While she was disguised as a serial killer in New York City, Vermouth athletically vaults up from a dead hanging positioning over the railing of the stairwell to higher ground despite being shot in the side. She also shoots herself in the leg to escape the effects of sleeping gas, and then walks to a phone booth on that shot leg and with several broken ribs from an earlier altercation.

As Vermouth pulled away in Jodie's car with broken ribs after her flak jacket absorbed a close range shotgun blast, she managed to aim a handgun backwards using the side mirror and shoot Araide's car's gas tank, causing it to explode. Akai is impressed she managed that difficult shot with her battered body. Earlier however, she failed to draw fast enough to shoot Jodie or Akai; in the first case, the gun was shot out of her hand, in the second, Akai fired first.

For some reason, Vermouth does not appear to age. Her apparent age hasn’t changed since she murdered Jodie’s parents twenty years ago.<ref name="f433">[[Volume 42#File 433 - The Truth Behind the Mask|Volume 42, File 433: "The Truth Behind the Mask"]]</ref> [[Akai Shuuichi]] proved that Vermouth was not wearing a mask when his shotgun fire grazed her face. Specifically, it hasn't been clarified if Vermouth hasn't aged over time or if she became younger all at once.

Vermouth probably didn't use [[APTX 4869]] to achieve her youthfulness unless she was willing to face near certain death trying it; the Black Organization only knew about APTX 4869's lethal effects.<ref>Sherry did not report the results that several of her mice shrank to the greater organization because they have not been able to figure out how Shiho managed to escape the locked room. If Shiho had reported her data, the Organization would have known that shrinking was a possible side effect of APTX 4869 and would have figured out how she escaped and begun looking for a child. It is unknown how much of the remainder is truthful, based on the truth, or outright fabrication because the primary source of the information is Vermouth herself who may have more to hide.

Little is known of Sharon Vineyard's mother and father. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Akai Shuichi]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide. Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who hadn't existed a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.

Vermouth's background is very mysterious. She was friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were acting together under the name Sharon Vineyard, but she was even then secretly a member of the [[Black Organization]]. It is unknown for exactly how long she has been a member, but it is known that she had been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of herself and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard. After staging Sharon Vineyard's death, she now lives as "Chris" and continues to serve the Black Organization. At one point, some twenty years ago, she killed the parents of a little girl who would become the FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]], one of her most bitter enemies.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearence. She doesn’t seem to like the research that Ai and her parents engaged in, calling it “foolish.” <ref>[[Volume 42#File 434 - Rotten Apple|Volume 42, File 434: "Rotten Apple"]]</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "Silver Bullet". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

Although she follows orders from [[Anokata|the boss]] and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is secretive and manipulative, even towards other Organization members. Vermouth is confident in her abilities, is very bold, and an expert at manipulating situations to her advantage: traits which allow her to single-handedly weave complex plots and take the upper hand even while she is being monitored by enemies. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Akai Shuuichi]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan, [[Ran]], and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] and Ran saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]].

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. It is frequently implied that Vermouth does not approve with the Organization's plans and is willing to quit, but fears the consequences of doing so openly. She is frequently shown to hold hopes that Conan is the 'silver bullet' that will eventually stop the Organization. She later returned them when presumably the surveillance would be even higher after the police noticed the files were missing. She then single-handedly staked out the [[FBI]] who were lured out into watching Mouri Kogoro and uncovered their numbers, addresses, and ways to contact them.

Vermouth is quite strong and has high pain tolerance. While she was disguised as a serial killer in New York City, Vermouth athletically vaults up from a dead hanging positioning over the railing of the stairwell to higher ground despite being shot in the side. She also shoots herself in the leg to escape the effects of sleeping gas, and then walks to a phone booth on that shot leg and with several broken ribs from an earlier altercation.

As Vermouth pulled away in Jodie's car with broken ribs after her flak jacket absorbed a close range shotgun blast, she managed to aim a handgun backwards using the side mirror and shoot Araide's car's gas tank, causing it to explode. Akai is impressed she managed that difficult shot with her battered body. Earlier however, she failed to draw fast enough to shoot Jodie or Akai; in the first case, the gun was shot out of her hand, in the second, Akai fired first.

Specifically, it hasn't been clarified if Vermouth hasn't aged over time or if she became younger all at once.

Vermouth probably didn't use [[APTX 4869]] to achieve her youthfulness unless she was willing to face near certain death trying it; the Black Organization only knew about APTX 4869's lethal effects. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Akai Shuichi]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide. Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who hadn't existed a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.

All these clues come together when Conan makes the assumption that Sharon Vineyard is Chris Vineyard who disguised as the silver haired serial killer in New York and that she is grateful for being rescued by [[Shinichi]] and [[Ran]].<ref name=f429p9>[[Volume 42#File 429 - The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet|Volume 42, File 429, page 9: "The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet"]]. == Background ==
Vermouth's background is very mysterious. She was friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were acting together under the name Sharon Vineyard, but she was even then secretly a member of the [[Black Organization]]. It is unknown for exactly how long she has been a member, but it is known that she had been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of herself and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard. After staging Sharon Vineyard's death, she now lives as "Chris" and continues to serve the Black Organization. At one point, some twenty years ago, she killed the parents of a little girl who would become the FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]], one of her most bitter enemies.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearence. She doesn’t seem to like the research that Ai and her parents engaged in, calling it “foolish.” <ref>[[Volume 42#File 434 - Rotten Apple|Volume 42, File 434: "Rotten Apple"]]</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "Silver Bullet". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

== Personality ==
Although she follows orders from [[Anokata|the boss]] and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is secretive and manipulative, even towards other Organization members. Vermouth is confident in her abilities, is very bold, and an expert at manipulating situations to her advantage: traits which allow her to single-handedly weave complex plots and take the upper hand even while she is being monitored by enemies. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Akai Shuuichi]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan, [[Ran]], and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] and Ran saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]].

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. It is frequently implied that Vermouth does not approve with the Organization's plans and is willing to quit, but fears the consequences of doing so openly. She is frequently shown to hold hopes that Conan is the 'silver bullet' that will eventually stop the Organization. She also retains personal feelings for persons who have earned a special place in her heart, such as Shinichi/Conan (as the son of her best friend) and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]].<ref name=e288>[[Shinichi Kudo's New York Case|Episode 288: Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, Part 3]].</ref> As a result, she is highly unwilling to do them any harm even when she is ordered to do so.

Vermouth is able to mimic anyone's appearance and voice exactly with her disguise and acting skills even after observing them for only a short period of time. Vermouth frequently utilizes latex masks. Although she may have known how to disguise prior to meeting [[Toichi Kuroba]], she studied disguise under him. Her disguise ability was first shown in [[The Mysterious Passenger]]<ref>[[Volume 29#File 287 - The Unseen Horror|Volume 29, File 287: "The Unseen Horror"]], [[The Mysterious Passenger|Episode 230: The Mysterious Passenger]]</ref> where she dressed as a male waiter to tease [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]].

===Reconnaissance===
Vermouth specializes in reconnaissance and infiltration, and has been shown to work very swiftly yet cautiously to rapidly acquire information. Her confidence and skill in disguise and imitation means she can execute bold plans that put her in very close contact with her targets and she can advance her plot even when they are suspicious of her. Without the aid of the other organization members, Vermouth successfully snuck into the [[Tokyo Metropolitan Police|Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters]] in order to steal the records of [[Mouri Kogoro]]'s cases. She later returned them when presumably the surveillance would be even higher after the police noticed the files were missing. She then single-handedly staked out the [[FBI]] who were lured out into watching Mouri Kogoro and uncovered their numbers, addresses, and ways to contact them.

===Stamina===
Vermouth is quite strong and has high pain tolerance. While she was disguised as a serial killer in New York City, Vermouth athletically vaults up from a dead hanging positioning over the railing of the stairwell to higher ground despite being shot in the side. She also shoots herself in the leg to escape the effects of sleeping gas, and then walks to a phone booth on that shot leg and with several broken ribs from an earlier altercation.

===Shooting===
As Vermouth pulled away in Jodie's car with broken ribs after her flak jacket absorbed a close range shotgun blast, she managed to aim a handgun backwards using the side mirror and shoot Araide's car's gas tank, causing it to explode. Akai is impressed she managed that difficult shot with her battered body. Earlier however, she failed to draw fast enough to shoot Jodie or Akai; in the first case, the gun was shot out of her hand, in the second, Akai fired first.

For some reason, Vermouth does not appear to age. Her apparent age hasn’t changed since she murdered Jodie’s parents twenty years ago.<ref name=f433>[[Volume 42#File 433 - The Truth Behind the Mask|Volume 42, File 433: "The Truth Behind the Mask"]]</ref> [[Akai Shuuichi]] proved that Vermouth was not wearing a mask when his shotgun fire grazed her face. Specifically, it hasn't been clarified if Vermouth hasn't aged over time or if she became younger all at once.

Vermouth probably didn't use [[APTX 4869]] one year ago to achieve her youthfulness unless she was willing to face near certain death trying it; the Black Organization only knows about APTX 4869's lethal effects. However, given that Vermouth has said depressing, almost suicidal things{{citation needed}} over the course of the series, both as a role she plays and as herself, it is possible she took the drug hoping to die, but was made younger like Haibara. Also, taking into account her disguising abilities and the overall uncertainty concerning when she ceased to age, it may not even need to be such a fluke that she regained her youth with it.

In order to camouflage the fact that Sharon Vineyard and Chris Vineyard are the same person, Vermouth concocted personal histories for her real life cover roles in order to make them seem like different people. When Sharon and Chris Vineyard were revealed to be one and the same, at least part of the stated Vineyard family history was revealed to be a lie. It is unknown how much of the remainder is truthful, based on the truth, or outright fabrication because the primary source of the information is Vermouth herself who may have more to hide.

Little is known of Sharon Vineyard's mother and father. Jodie's father in the FBI was secretly investigating Vermouth twenty years before the current storyline.<ref name=f433/> That is too young for Chris Vineyard to be in disguise as she is only 29 currently and would be 9 at the time. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

===Conan's investigation===

[[Conan]] suspects [[Pisco]] had help from another [[Black Organization]] member. He looks into [[Chris Vineyard]] and realizes that she is able to disguise herself and may be pretending to be someone close to him. [[Kogoro Mouri]]’s case records were stolen from the police department. Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. Conan's first suspect is [[Akai Shuuichi]] whose behavior seemed suspicious.<ref name=f291p11>[[Volume 29#File 291 - A Tiny Trace|Volume 29, File 291, page 11: "A Tiny Trace"]]</ref> After recognizes Akai in the P & A case<ref name=f326>[[Volume 32#File 326 - P & A|Volume 32, File 326-328: "P & A"]]</ref>, Conan shows sensitivity to the prospect of someone investigating them.<ref name=f332>[[Volume 33#File 332 - Bloody Valentine 2|Volume 33, File 332: "Bloody Valentine 2"]]</ref> Conan doesn't seem to suspect the person Vermouth has replaced, [[Tomoaki Araide|Dr. Araide]], yet because he was willing to use his voice changer in front of him.<ref name=f330>[[Volume 33#File 330 - Sato's Feelings|Volume 33, File 2: "Satou's feelings"]]</ref>

Conan gets his first tangible proof someone is investigating around him them when [[Takagi]] informs Conan all the records of [[Kogoro]]'s cases were stolen from the police station on the day of the bus hijack incident and later returned.<ref name=f336p9>[[Volume 33#File 336 - Clean Scent|Volume 33, File 336, pages 9-10: "Clean Scent"]]</ref> He begins to wonder who the target is and suspects Akai may be behind the incident because of the timing. Conan also begins to suspect the English teacher [[Jodie Starling|Jodie Santemillion]] and Dr. Araide as well because they were also on the bus.<ref name=f343p17>[[Volume 34#File 343 - Who Are You?|Volume 34, File 343, page 17: "Who Are You?"]]</ref> He isn't sure of the motive for taking the records although Conan wonders if someone is trying to lure him out or if the person returned the files because they already knew what Conan would do.<ref name=f336p9>[[Volume 34#File 341 - The Hint That Was Against|Volume 34, File 341: "The Hint That Was Against"]]</ref>

Conan's idea that Pisco had an accomplice among the other suspects has fully solidified. He has noticed one of the suspects who had a purple handkerchief, [[Chris Vineyard]], hasn't appeared in public since that case, thus Conan believes Chris is the Black Organization accomplice. He asks [[Agasa]] to go onto Chris's fansite and gather information on her past, interests, and habits<ref name=f341p3>[[Volume 34#File 341 - The Hint That Was Against|Volume 34, File 341, page 3: "The Hint That Was Against"]]</ref> and Agasa's investigation corroborates with Conan's deduction.<ref name=f344p9/> Conan is already aware that Chris Vineyard has disguise abilities and may be in disguise as someone around him.<ref name=f343p17/>

At this point, Conan is still uncertain of Araide, Jodie, and Akai's allegiances. He learns from [[Ran]] that Akai Shuuichi was seen with a man in an [[FBI]] jacket during the New York case, causing Conan to wonder if the FBI is in Japan for some reason or the Black Organization infiltrated the American law enforcement.<ref name=f380p5>[[Volume 37#File 380 - White Snow... Black Shadow...|Volume 37, File 380, pages 5-6: "White Snow... By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. Vermouth puts her plan to capture Haibara into action by calling Agasa's house as Dr. Araide saying he wants to take Haibara to a hospital because her cough hasn't gotten better.<ref name=f430p9>[[Volume 42#File 430 - The Haunted Ship Painted with Blood|Volume 42, File 430, page 9: "The Haunted Ship Painted with Blood"]]</ref> Conan is still unsure of Jodie's allegiance until she answers the door before Dr. Araide arrives. Conan tells Jodie the true scenario of Dr. Araide's family murder case.<ref name=f433p11>[[Volume 42#File 433 - The Truth Behind the Mask|Volume 42, File 433, page 11: "The Truth Behind the Mask"]]</ref> Tomoaki Araide’s father, Yoshiteru Araide, was killed in his bathtub via electrocution. The murder was masterminded by Yoshiteru Araide's second wife, Yoko Araide. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathroom and put an electric shaver in the bathtub. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. Jodie used this to her advantage and forced Vermouth to reveal that she didn't know the true sequence of events.<ref name=f432p11>[[Volume 42#File 432 - Shinichi Kudo Appears!?|Volume 42, File 432, page 11: "Shinichi Kudo Appears!?"]]</ref>

At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Akai Shuichi]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide. Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who hadn't existed a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.

:The inclination is "almost suicidal," as in these lines themselves are a matter of perspective; they can be read that way, but they can also be read as something different. Which way is a matter of perspective and, given the more depressing thoughts, there's plenty of merit to the idea of suicidal as is the idea of a different freedom. That's why I left it listed as "almost suicidal" as opposed to outright "suicidal" and removed the sitation; I can quote a thousand different depressing lines from Vermouth and the perspective of suicidal can be argued in almost all of them. The validity would vary, but the possibility is real, be it in Vermouth or anyone in such a state. Example, I can argue Vermouth cheering on Conan's attempt to take down the Organization as suicidal; treason is punished with murder in the Organization. However, that can just as easily be read as a desire for freedom. The bigger inclination is she always kills her characters off. Sharon Vineyard I can understand, since she was popular enough to require such a problem, but even the serial killer to draw out and kill Shuichi. People disappear, some of whom want to disappear, it's sad but true (and for in canon examples we have Numabuchi and the number of almost suicides disguised as murders). And running with the assumption concerning her, apparently, nobody parents, that would be three deaths that really didn't have to happen (although they also pivot on the idea they were all simply characters and not people like the Araides). It's cleaner for her past with murder, but not necessary. Further, deaths leave evidence no matter what you do, some disappearences don't; it's seems smarter and more Organization like to not kill a fictional character under such free circumstances. While this is all speculation, this is reason to believe Vermouth has a fascination with killing her characters, killing pieces of herself. If you can submit this in some cleaner way, or would rather argue it, I welcome you to it either way. "Depressing" alone doesn't grant a look into her well enough; there are varying degrees of depression. "Almost suicidal" gives that perspective. The "suicidal" demonstrates the depth of the depression, while the "almost" leaves it to be made as a perspective; the whole thing is meant to read that Vermouth has said severely depressing things, things that people initiate a suicide watch for, as opposed to mildly depressing, the kind most people ignore unless someone gets dramatic. You can't accomplish such a feat with only "depressing." Even "severely depressing" doesn't cut it, since some people see depressing as black and white; it is or it isn't. There needs to be something more to grant better definition. If you have something better, then by all means post it, or take down the citation.

Further, the one year transition is irrelevant because of my last point. The last sentence was meant to illuminate the fact that we can't actually determine when exactly she regained her youth. Her disguising talents allow her to fake such a feat, so a time limit stating when she began to look young without a disguise grants a narrowed perspective that may ultimately be wrong. The whole paragraph was about APTX 4869, I thought it was logical that "it" was referring to the drug; edit that if you want, but honestly I think it's fine as is. You can add that Chris Vineyard appeared one year ago, but you can't actually say with any certainty that's when she regained her youth for real. Posting as such is posting your interpretation of the facts.

Finally, Haibara had said that one rat shrank and that she didn't report it to the Boss. However, her father also happened to be working on such a drug, Pisco's words. She said she wouldn't continue her father's work, but we know neither when she said that nor if the Organization tricked her into continuing. This is what's called an open experiment; instead of having subjects who are kept in certain conditions, they experiment with things off the street, the varying conditions of such subjects allow them to establish things that can interact with the drug and alter its destined effect. Drug companies do this, though usually when there's more certainty that they're not lethal, and people make a killing off them. Shinichi was clearly a test of the drug, both Gin's words and Haibara's presence in his house prove this. Exactly what they were testing is unknown, since we haven't heard from the Boss on this matter. While the Organization doesn't reportedly know there was a success with Haibara t the helm, this is nothing to say that they weren't testing for such a feat, and it also doesn't mean that the drug suddenly stopped being worked on. Yes, Haibara was important to the research, but losing the important scientist has never stopped scientists and companies from continuing before. Once you again, to allow such a comment to remain up is argumentative and a matter of perspective. Which is it: are you not allowing any perspectives and just the facts, or are you allowing these and their counters up? You can't keep only one interpretation up and then take down any that disagree with it just because we don't have the time to word it perfectly and you lack either the time or patience to research, change your perspective to see if it fits, and edit it to make more sense yourself. After staging Sharon Vineyard's death, she now lives as "Chris" and continues to serve the Black Organization. At one point, some twenty years ago, she killed the parents of a little girl who would become the FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]], one of her most bitter enemies.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearence. Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. Jodie's father in the FBI was secretly investigating Vermouth twenty years before the current storyline.<ref name=f433/> That is too young for Chris Vineyard to be in disguise as she is only 29 currently and would be 9 at the time. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Akai Shuichi]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide. Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who hadn't existed a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.

All these clues come together when Conan makes the assumption that Sharon Vineyard is Chris Vineyard who disguised as the silver haired serial killer in New York and that she is grateful for being rescued by [[Shinichi]] and [[Ran]].<ref name=f429p9>[[Volume 42#File 429 - The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet|Volume 42, File 429, page 9: "The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet"]]. Vermouth's background is very mysterious. She was friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were acting together under the name Sharon Vineyard, but she was even then secretly a member of the [[Black Organization]]. It is unknown for exactly how long she has been a member, but it is known that she had been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of herself and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard. After staging Sharon Vineyard's death, she now lives as "Chris" and continues to serve the Black Organization. At one point, some twenty years ago, she killed the parents of a little girl who would become the FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]], one of her most bitter enemies.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearence. She doesn’t seem to like the research that Ai and her parents engaged in, calling it “foolish.” <ref>Manga chapter 434</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "Silver Bullet". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

Although she follows orders from [[Anokata|the boss]] and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Akai Shuuichi]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan, [[Ran]], and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] and Ran saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]].

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. It is frequently implied that Vermouth does not approve with the Organization's plans and is willing to quit, but fears the consequences of doing so openly. She is frequently shown to hold hopes that Conan is the 'silver bullet' that will eventually stop the Organization. She also retains personal feelings for persons who have earned a special place in her heart, such as Shinichi/Conan (as the son of her best friend) and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]].<ref name="episode 288">[[Shinichi Kudo's New York Case|Episode 288: Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, Part 3]].</ref> As a result, she is highly unwilling to do them any harm even when she is ordered to do so.

Vermouth specializes in reconnaissance and infiltration, and has been shown to work very swiftly yet cautiously to rapidly acquire information. Her confidence and skill in disguise and imitation means she can execute bold plans that put her in very close contact with her targets and she can advance her plot even when they are suspicious of her. Without the aid of the other organization members, Vermouth successfully snuck into the [[Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters]] in order to steal the records of [[Mouri Kogoro]]'s cases. She later returned them when presumably the surveillance would be even higher after the police noticed the files were missing. She then single-handedly staked out the [[FBI]] who were lured out into watching Mouri Kogoro and uncovered their numbers, addresses, and ways to contact them.

===Stamina===
Vermouth is quite strong and has high pain tolerance. While she was disguised as a serial killer in New York City, Vermouth athletically vaults up from a dead hanging positioning over the railing of the stairwell to higher ground despite being shot in the side. She also shoots herself in the leg to escape the effects of sleeping gas, and then walks to a phone booth on that shot leg and with several broken ribs from an earlier altercation.

As Vermouth pulled away in Jodie's car with broken ribs after her flak jacket absorbed a close range shotgun blast, she managed to aim a handgun backwards using the side mirror and shoot Araide's car's gas tank, causing it to explode. Akai is impressed she managed that difficult shot with her battered body. Earlier however, she failed to draw fast enough to shoot Jodie or Akai; in the first case, the gun was shot out of her hand, in the second, Akai fired first.

When Sharon and Chris Vineyard were revealed to be one and the same, at least part of the stated Vineyard family history was revealed to be a lie. It is unknown how much of the remainder is truthful, based on the truth, or outright fabrication because the primary source of the information is Vermouth herself who may have more to hide.

Little is known of Sharon Vineyard's mother and father. Jodie’s father in the FBI was secretly investigating Vermouth twenty years before the current storyline.<ref>433</ref> That is too young for Chris Vineyard to be in disguise as she is only 29 currently and would be 9 at the time. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

[[Conan]] suspects [[Pisco]] had help from another [[Black Organization]] member. He looks into [[Chris Vineyard]] and realizes that she is able to disguise herself and may be pretending to be someone close to him. [[Kogoro Mouri]]’s case records were stolen from the police department. Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. Conan's first suspect is [[Akai Shuuichi]] whose behavior seemed suspicious.<ref name=291p11>Manga Volume 29, File 7, page 11: "A Tiny Trace"</ref> After recognizes Akai in the P & A case<ref name=P&A>Manga Volume 32, File 9-11: "The Man from Chicago"</ref>, Conan shows sensitivity to the prospect of someone investigating them.<ref name=332p>Manga Volume 33, File 4: "The Bloody Valentine 2"</ref> Conan doesn't seem to suspect the person Vermouth has replaced, [[Tomoaki Araide|Dr. Araide]], yet because he was willing to use his voice changer in front of him. <ref name=330p>Manga Volume 33, File 2: "Satou's feelings"</ref>

Conan gets his first tangible proof someone is investigating around him them when [[Takagi]] informs Conan all the records of [[Kogoro]]'s cases were stolen from the police station on the day of the bus hijack incident and later returned.<ref name=336p9>Manga Volume 33, File 8, pages 9-10: "Clean Scent"</ref> He begins to wonder who the target is and suspects Akai may be behind the incident because of the timing. Conan's idea that Pisco had an accomplice among the other suspects has fully solidified. He has noticed one of the suspects who had a purple handkerchief, [[Chris Vineyard]], hasn't appeared in public since that case, thus Conan believes Chris is the Black Organization accomplice. He asks [[Agasa]] to go onto Chris's fansite and gather information on her past, interests, and habits<ref name=341p3>Manga Volume 34, File 2, pg 3: "The Hint That Was Against"</ref> and Agasa's investigation corroborates with Conan's deduction.<ref name=344p9/> Conan is already aware that Chris Vineyard has disguise abilities and may be in disguise as someone around him.<ref name=343p17/>

At this point, Conan is still uncertain of Araide, Jodie, and Akai's allegiances. He learns from [[Ran]] that Akai Shuuichi was seen with a man in an [[FBI]] jacket during the New York case, causing Conan to wonder if the FBI is in Japan for some reason or the Black Organization infiltrated the American law enforcement.<ref name=380p5>Manga Volume 37, File 8, pages 5-6: "White Snow, Black Shadow"</ref> Conan begins to take precautions around Dr. Araide and Jodie by lying to them in order to minimize contact and information they have about Haibara.<ref name=420p>Manga Volume 41, File 7: "The Enclosing Surrounding Net"</ref><ref name=422p>Manga Volume 41, File 9: "Inescapable Target"</ref> However, Jodie and Dr. Araide both go over to Agasa's house and plant listening devices because Conan failed to communicate his suspicion and plans to Agasa.<ref name=422p/>

By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. Vermouth puts her plan to capture Haibara into action by calling Agasa's house as Dr. Araide saying he wants to take Haibara to a hospital because her cough hasn't gotten better.<ref name=430p9>Manga Volume 42, File 6, page 9: "The Haunted Ship Painted In Blood"</ref> Conan is still unsure of Jodie's allegiance until she answers the door before Dr. Araide arrives. Jodie lies to "Haibara" (who is really Conan in disguise) saying that Dr Araide's car has broken down and she has come in his place.<ref name=431p3>Manga Volume 42, File 7, page 3: "The Invisible Man Appears"</ref> Conan catches the lie and realizes that Jodie has been listening to the bugs as well and is acting to protect Haibara, meaning she is against Vermouth. Conan tells Jodie the true scenario of Dr. Araide's family murder case.<ref name=433p11>Manga Volume 42, File 9, page 11: "The Truth Behind The Mask"</ref> Tomoaki Araide’s father, Yoshiteru Araide, was killed in his bathtub via electrocution. The murder was masterminded by Yoshiteru Araide's second wife, Yoko Araide. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathroom and put an electric shaver in the bathtub. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. Jodie used this to her advantage and forced Vermouth to reveal that she didn't know the true sequence of events.<ref name=432p11>Manga Volume 42, File 8, page 11: "Kudo Shinichi To The Rescue"</ref>

At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Akai Shuichi]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide. Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who hadn't existed a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.

All these clues come together when Conan makes the assumption that Sharon Vineyard is Chris Vineyard who disguised as the silver haired serial killer in New York and that she is grateful for being rescued by [[Shinichi]] and [[Ran]].<ref name=429p9>Manga Volume 42, File 5, page 9: "The Fullmoon Night and Black Banquet Trap". After Conan tells Agasa that Vermouth probably knows who they are, Agasa asks "If they know that much, why haven't they come here to kill you?". == Background ==
Vermouth's background is very mysterious. She was friends with [[Yukiko Kudo]] back when they were acting together under the name Sharon Vineyard, but she was even then secretly a member of the [[Black Organization]]. It is unknown for exactly how long she has been a member, but it is known that she had been secretly living at least two lives through the art of disguise: that of herself and her supposed daughter, Chris Vineyard. After staging Sharon Vineyard's death, she now lives as "Chris" and continues to serve the Black Organization. At one point, some twenty years ago, she killed the parents of a little girl who would become the FBI agent [[Jodie Starling]], one of her most bitter enemies.

Vermouth is [[Anokata|the boss]]’s favorite which grants her some independence. She also appears not to age or have de-aged over a period of twenty years between when she killed Jodie's parents and her current appearence. She doesn’t seem to like the research that Ai and her parents engaged in, calling it “foolish.” <ref>Manga chapter 434</ref>

Vermouth entered the storyline some time after [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano/Sherry/Ai Haibara]]'s mysterious flight from the Organization. Her main objective was to track down and eliminate the 'traitor', and for that purpose she assumed the identity of doctor [[Tomoaki Araide]]. But although she managed to discover Shiho's reversion into a child, she did not succeed in killing her, as she met [[Conan Edogawa]], who was able to discover and thwart her plans. She also encountered the FBI during this process.

Vermouth has great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him "Silver Bullet". Since it has been revealed that she knows about Ai and Kudo's reversion to their child forms, she seems to know the shrinking effect the drug can have, but for reasons yet unrevealed she keeps this knowledge secret from the rest of the Organization.

== Personality ==
Although she follows orders from [[Anokata|the boss]] and [[Gin]] when he is charge of missions, Vermouth often acts according to her own agenda and whims, even when it runs contrary to the [[Black Organization]]'s best interests. She is secretive and manipulative, even towards other Organization members. Vermouth is confident in her abilities, is very bold, and an expert at manipulating situations to her advantage: traits which allow her to single-handedly weave complex plots and take the upper hand even while she is being monitored by enemies. She is intelligent and insightful, correctly suspecting the allegiance of Kir, but she was successfully outwitted by [[Conan]] and forced by [[Akai Shuuichi]] to retreat.

Vermouth's personality is contradictory at times. On one hand, she is a cruel and ruthless agent who will blackmail an unwilling man to commit murder by threatening him and his family just to provide a distraction and happily tell [[Jodie Starling|an FBI agent]] she should smile because she will see her dead father again in heaven. On the other hand, she risks her life several times to protect Conan, [[Ran]], and [[Kogoro]], and her friendly behavior while in disguise as Tomoaki Araide left the real Araide wondering if Vermouth is really a bad person. This inconsistency may reflect an underlying conflict of conscience after [[Shinichi]] and Ran saved her life during the events of the [[Vermouth_timeline#Golden_Apple_Case_.28Manga:_350-354_Anime:_286-288.29|Golden Apple case]].

At this point, Vermouth's motives are very mysterious. She knows about Conan being Shinichi, as well as that Haibara is Sherry, yet she has kept this information a secret from the rest of the Organization. It is frequently implied that Vermouth does not approve with the Organization's plans and is willing to quit, but fears the consequences of doing so openly. She is frequently shown to hold hopes that Conan is the 'silver bullet' that will eventually stop the Organization. Vermouth is able to mimic anyone's appearance and voice exactly with her disguise and acting skills even after observing them for only a short period of time. Vermouth frequently utilizes latex masks. Although she may have known how to disguise prior to meeting [[Toichi Kuroba]], she studied disguise under him. Her disguise ability was first shown in [[The Mysterious Passenger]]<ref>Manga chapter 287, Anime episode 230</ref> where she dressed as a male waiter to tease [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]].

===Reconnaissance===
Vermouth specializes in reconnaissance and infiltration, and has been shown to work very swiftly yet cautiously to rapidly acquire information. Her confidence and skill in disguise and imitation means she can execute bold plans that put her in very close contact with her targets and she can advance her plot even when they are suspicious of her. Without the aid of the other organization members, Vermouth successfully snuck into the [[Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters]] in order to steal the records of [[Mouri Kogoro]]'s cases. She later returned them when presumably the surveillance would be even higher after the police noticed the files were missing. She then single-handedly staked out the [[FBI]] who were lured out into watching Mouri Kogoro and uncovered their numbers, addresses, and ways to contact them.

===Stamina===
Vermouth is quite strong and has high pain tolerance. While she was disguised as a serial killer in New York City, Vermouth athletically vaults up from a dead hanging positioning over the railing of the stairwell to higher ground despite being shot in the side. She also shoots herself in the leg to escape the effects of sleeping gas, and then walks to a phone booth on that shot leg and with several broken ribs from an earlier altercation.

===Shooting===
As Vermouth pulled away in Jodie's car with broken ribs after her flak jacket absorbed a close range shotgun blast, she managed to aim a handgun backwards using the side mirror and shoot Araide's car's gas tank, causing it to explode. Akai is impressed she managed that difficult shot with her battered body. Earlier however, she failed to draw fast enough to shoot Jodie or Akai; in the first case, the gun was shot out of her hand, in the second, Akai fired first.

For some reason, Vermouth does not appear to age. Her apparent age hasn’t changed since she murdered Jodie’s parents twenty years ago.<ref>Chapter 433</ref> [[Akai Shuuichi]] proved that Vermouth was not wearing a mask when his shotgun fire grazed her face. Specifically, it hasn't been clarified if Vermouth hasn't aged over time or if she became younger all at once.

Vermouth probably didn't use [[APTX 4869]] one year ago to achieve her youthfulness unless she was willing to face near certain death trying it. In order to camouflage the fact that Sharon Vineyard and Chris Vineyard are the same person, Vermouth concocted personal histories for her real life cover roles in order to make them seem like different people. When Sharon and Chris Vineyard were revealed to be one and the same, at least part of the stated Vineyard family history was revealed to be a lie. It is unknown how much of the remainder is truthful, based on the truth, or outright fabrication because the primary source of the information is Vermouth herself who may have more to hide.

Little is known of Sharon Vineyard's mother and father. Sharon's parents were not actresses, at least not well known ones, because Agasa called Chris Vineyard a second generation actress.<ref name=341p8>Manga Volume 34, File 2, pg 8: "The Hint That Was Against"</ref> According to Sharon's story, both her mother and father died in a fire on the day Sharon debuted on screen.<ref name=351p2>Manga Volume 35, File 1, pg 2, "Golden Apple 2"</ref>

There were several hints that Vermouth was Dr. Araide and not [[Jodie Saintemillion]] who was also a candidate for being Vermouth before her true identity was revealed.
*The records of [[Mouri Kogoro]]'s cases that Vermouth stole did not contain any cases involving [[Jodie Saintemillion]], but did the contain the murder case [[Tomoaki Araide]] was involved in. This was the clue that allowed Conan to deduce Araide was Vermouth.
*Jodie's copies of the pictures of Ran and Conan on Vermouth's dart have irregular borders indicating they were photographs of Vermouth's pictures.<ref name=343p18>Manga Volume 34, File 4, pg 18: "Who Are You?" </ref> This detail was overlooked in the anime. Also Jodie has a picture of Dr. Araide.

Jodie’s father in the FBI was secretly investigating Vermouth twenty years before the current storyline.<ref>433</ref> That is too young for Chris Vineyard to be in disguise as she is only 29 currently and would be 9 at the time. After Vermouth killed Jodie's father she inadvertently handled Jodie’s father’s glasses barehanded which had fallen off of him and got her fingerprints on them. Unexpectedly, little Jodie came in and saw Vermouth holding the glasses. When Vermouth left after setting the house on fire, she didn't anticipate that Jodie left to get juice, taking her father’s glasses with her and thus preserving her fingerprint. After she discovered Jodie's corpse was not found in the house, Vermouth looked for the girl desperately in order to rectify her mistake, but Jodie had since been put into witness protection.

Jodie suspected Chris Vineyard of being Vermouth when she saw her at Sharon’s funeral. She somehow determined Chris Vineyard’s prints matched those of the glasses. Chris would have been too young to commit a crime 20 years ago, so later Jodie obtained Sharon’s fingerprints and matched those as well. All three matched, proving to Jodie that the three people were one and the same.

[[Conan]] suspects [[Pisco]] had help from another [[Black Organization]] member. He looks into [[Chris Vineyard]] and realizes that she is able to disguise herself and may be pretending to be someone close to him. [[Kogoro Mouri]]’s case records were stolen from the police department. Conan realizes [[Tomoaki Araide]] is Vermouth because Vermouth needed the files to testify at the trial properly while in disguise.

Conan first suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the mourning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Conan didn't realize that this Black Organization member might be after him or Haibara until after the bus jack case when [[Haibara]] tells Conan there was definitely someone from the Organization on the bus. Conan gets his first tangible proof someone is investigating around him them when [[Takagi]] informs Conan all the records of [[Kogoro]]'s cases were stolen from the police station on the day of the bus hijack incident and later returned.<ref name=336p9>Manga Volume 33, File 8, pages 9-10: "Clean Scent"</ref> He begins to wonder who the target is and suspects Akai may be behind the incident because of the timing. Conan's idea that Pisco had an accomplice among the other suspects has fully solidified. He has noticed one of the suspects who had a purple handkerchief, [[Chris Vineyard]], hasn't appeared in public since that case, thus Conan believes Chris is the Black Organization accomplice. He asks [[Agasa]] to go onto Chris's fansite and gather information on her past, interests, and habits<ref name=341p3>Manga Volume 34, File 2, pg 3: "The Hint That Was Against"</ref> and Agasa's investigation corroborates with Conan's deduction.<ref name=344p9/> Conan is already aware that Chris Vineyard has disguise abilities and may be in disguise as someone around him.<ref name=343p17/>

At this point, Conan is still uncertain of Araide, Jodie, and Akai's allegiances. He learns from [[Ran]] that Akai Shuuichi was seen with a man in an [[FBI]] jacket during the New York case, causing Conan to wonder if the FBI is in Japan for some reason or the Black Organization infiltrated the American law enforcement.<ref name=380p5>Manga Volume 37, File 8, pages 5-6: "White Snow, Black Shadow"</ref> Conan begins to take precautions around Dr. Araide and Jodie by lying to them in order to minimize contact and information they have about Haibara.<ref name=420p>Manga Volume 41, File 7: "The Enclosing Surrounding Net"</ref><ref name=422p>Manga Volume 41, File 9: "Inescapable Target"</ref> However, Jodie and Dr. Araide both go over to Agasa's house and plant listening devices because Conan failed to communicate his suspicion and plans to Agasa.<ref name=422p/>

By the time Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he has realized that Vermouth is most likely Dr. Araide because Jodie wasn't in Mouri's case files when they were stolen, while Araide was. Vermouth needed the files to give proper testimony at the trial and to act correctly as Araide. Vermouth puts her plan to capture Haibara into action by calling Agasa's house as Dr. Araide saying he wants to take Haibara to a hospital because her cough hasn't gotten better.<ref name=430p9>Manga Volume 42, File 6, page 9: "The Haunted Ship Painted In Blood"</ref> Conan is still unsure of Jodie's allegiance until she answers the door before Dr. Araide arrives. Jodie lies to "Haibara" (who is really Conan in disguise) saying that Dr Araide's car has broken down and she has come in his place.<ref name=431p3>Manga Volume 42, File 7, page 3: "The Invisible Man Appears"</ref> Conan catches the lie and realizes that Jodie has been listening to the bugs as well and is acting to protect Haibara, meaning she is against Vermouth. Armed with this info, he asks Jodie to force the truth from Vermouth, and in return he will trust her.<ref name=432p4>Manga Volume 42, File 8, page 4: "Kudo Shinichi To The Rescue"</ref>

Conan tells Jodie the true scenario of Dr. Araide's family murder case.<ref name=433p11>Manga Volume 42, File 9, page 11: "The Truth Behind The Mask"</ref> Tomoaki Araide’s father, Yoshiteru Araide, was killed in his bathtub via electrocution. The murder was masterminded by Yoshiteru Araide's second wife, Yoko Araide. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathroom and put an electric shaver in the bathtub. She then crept back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted. "Sleeping Kogoro", the police, and the criminal decided to create a false investigation record to protect the conscience of the maid Hikaru. Jodie used this to her advantage and forced Vermouth to reveal that she didn't know the true sequence of events.<ref name=432p11>Manga Volume 42, File 8, page 11: "Kudo Shinichi To The Rescue"</ref>

At the same time Shinichi and Ran were in New York City, Vermouth disguised as a silver-haired serial killer in order to lure out [[Akai Shuichi]]. Later, Conan suspected the serial killer may have been someone in disguise when he heard that the serial killer’s blood and fingerprints on the stair rails were cleaned up, an action uncharacteristic for someone intending to commit suicide. Sharon was the only person Conan knew about in the local area with high disguise abilities, so suspicion naturally fell onto her.

After Vermouth disguised as Araide, Conan deduced from the way Vermouth was behaving that she was trying to avoid involving Conan in her plan and was only targeting Haibara. Vermouth as Dr. Araide risked her life to protect Conan in the bus jack case and helped him out in Sato's matchup case. When Conan gets the letter from Vermouth inviting him the off-season Halloween mystery party, he realizes that Vermouth's intentions are to only trap Haibara and that Vermouth is trying to lure Conan to the party to avoid catching him up in her plan.

Conan who hadn't existed a year ago has no reason to be “protected” by Vermouth. Conan deduces Vermouth must know his identity as Shinichi and the reason for her “protection” must have to do with something he did as Shinichi. However, Sharon was the only one Shinichi had a connection with, and she is apparently dead. Sharon’s daughter Chris has never met Shinichi and is estranged from Sharon Vineyard so she alone doesn't have an adequate motive to protect Shinichi. Also, it wouldn’t make sense for Chris Vineyard, who isn’t a family friend like Sharon, to be able to recognize Shinichi as Conan; presumably Vermouth saw young Shinichi with Yukiko when she was Sharon.
