Kogoro, Ran, and Conan find a cat belonging to a rich British woman who offers to pay their expenses on a trip to London so Kogoro may share his detective stories with her friends. To get past airport security, Haibara offers Conan two antidotes to the APTX 4869 for the trip and back. At the Holmes museum, Ran calls Shinichi asking him if he wants a survivor from London. His weak reaction causes Ran to angrily hang up. Outside the museum, a kid named Apollo Glass asks to see Sherlock Holmes to a solve a code that will prevent a person from being murdered. Conan offers to solve the riddle by posing as Holmes' apprentice. Apollo reveals a strange man gave him a note containing seven coded riddles, declaring someone in London will die if it is left unsolved. They learn from the police that many children received the same code which Conan speculates to mean a large number of people will die. Conan and Agasa separate from the group as they attempt to decode the riddles.

Ran, feeling upset as she believes Shinichi does not share her feelings, is confided by Apollo's sister, pro tennis player Minerva Glass. Minerva then parts ways with Ran advising her Love is Zero and would never amount to anything no matter the effort. Ran calls Shinichi for advice on the riddles. Conan, tells Ran the first riddle "A rolling bell rises me", refers to Big Ben and accidentally reveals he is in London. Realizing Ran will discover Conan's true identity if she finds him, Conan and Agasa flee from her. Conan becomes cornered in a phone booth and is forced to take the antidote to the APTX 4869 for the return trip and confronts Ran as Shinichi. Ran confesses her pain of liking Shinichi who is indifferent to her feelings and runs away as he pursues her.

The next day, the police reveal the identity of the man who created the note, Hades Sabara. Kogoro and Ran decode the riddle "My portion is like a chilled boiled egg like a corpse" which refers to City Hall. There, they find many dolls with "Mazarin Stone" written on their shirts where when beheaded, reveals the letter "T". The riddle "I finished up with a whole pickle" refers to 30 St Mary Axe where scratched up pens labeled as Dancing Men reveal the letter "N". At Big Ben, Ran and Kogoro find an arrow pointing to a drain where The Valley of Fear of fear is inscribed. They deduce from the story that something had been sunk in the river, and find a drain cover with the letter "A". Apollo leads the two to the next riddle, "Now I remember to ask a cake to celebrate in advance" referring to St. Bride's Church where they find letters entitled, "A Scandal in Bohemia". Soaking the letter in water reveals the letter "S".

Shinichi has returned to Conan again. However Haibara had given only two pills antidote, he will has to arrange to return. Gradually deciphering the note handed the criminal.Conan discovers that the place where it plans to attack Sabara will be the tennis courts of Wimbledon, where play Minerva Glass. When they reach the stadium, the criminal has already entered, and since they do not have tickets, they stay outside. However, they can watch the game from a screen that is located outside of Wimbledon. Minerva is losing.

Minerva is losing because he writes a message in braille hitting the ball on the lawn, which Conan understand. He convinces Apollo to give him his ticket .When it enters the room tells Minerva that he can help. Minerva believe it and keep writing.The message said the mother of Minerva was going to die! Conan focuses on finding Hades, and asks Minerva to lengthen the game. Minerva gets go up and the party has to decide in the tie-break.

Conan meets his parents and give a ticket. After locates Hades with the help of Minerva, Bystanders see Conan as "Holmes Apprentice" and compliment him and then Hades sees him. Before even pressing the button to trigger the bomb, Minerva throws a tennis ball and hits Hades. After that, Conan then takes the ball and kicks it. It hits Hades and he got stopped by the police. Minerva wins the match and meets with Ran. She says Shinichi told her that the zero is also a starting point. Haibara gave Shinichi's parents an antidote because she knew that he would use it.

Kogoro, Ran, Conan, Heiji, and Kazuha are at a festival when a monk asks them to solve a case of a disappearing body at the temple; Shakuren, the head monk, denies the body's existence. After investigating, Conan and Heiji reveal that Shakuren arranged the temples blood stained Tatami mats into the corner of the rooms where the stains are covered by statues. Shakuren reveals that the body was Denkyuu's mother, who abandoned him eighteen years ago. He reveals that she performed suicide after being refused to see her son whom she could not even recognize.

The next day, Heiji takes Conan with him to participate in a reality television deduction competition between high school detectives Heiji Hattori, Natsuki Koshimizu, Junya Tokitsu, and Saguru Hakuba. While there, Tokitsu is murdered and the detectives realize the television programming was a hoax.

After a thorough investigation, the culprit is revealed to be the detective of the South, Natsuki Koshimizu. It is revealed that Koshimizu was searching for the detective who's inadequate investigation led the police to believe her friend was a suspect in a murder prompting her friend's suicide. That detective turned out to be Tokitsu.

Conan, Ran, Mouri, and Sonoko travel to Shikoku to see the kabuki play Phantom of the Konpira. It is a play based on Phantom of the Opera. Things start to mimic the play. There are requests for a heroine change, sightings of a phantom, and a deliberate attempt on the heroine, just like Phantom of the Opera. The chief of the stage setting is killed, and the chairman and the sponsor are arrested by circumstantial evidence. Conan uses Sonoko to reveal that heroine tried to ruin the theater's play.

He then taped all the doors but made a cut along the passenger door allowing him to leave. Conan explains when Misumi broke into the car to save Ami, he only pretended to cut the passenger door open and that it was cut already. As evidence to prove he was the murderer, Conan reveals that the book in the car came out on that same day and that Misumi's fingerprints were on the cover. However, Misumi reported that his girlfriend went missing yesterday. Misumi confesses and reveals his girlfriend was cheating on him even though he gave her so much.

== Relationship analysis ==

Mitsuhiko develops heavy romantic feelings for Ai, and Ai is aware of this. Ai uses his feelings to her advantage when she needs him to do something, but she also does admire his courage during missions the Detective Boys must perform and respects his feelings. Ai hasn't shown any romantic feelings for him, but she slightly admires his knowledge. Haibara seems to like tempting Mitsuhiko for making fun of him. She also in some episodes showed more confidence with Mitsuhiko than with Ayumi or Genta. Their "love" could be called "puppy love". This pairing has a deep connection with Ayumi and Conan relationship.

The Detective Boys were informally founded when [[Ayumi Yoshida]] and [[Genta Kojima]] decided to investigate a mansion which was once a murder site and had been abandoned. Conan and his classmate [[Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya]] were drafted into accompanying the two, and the foursome entered the house. In the course of this adventure, Conan found out that the house was still inhabited by the mother and son of the murder victim; the son had killed his father in a fit of rage over his abusive behavior, and his mother had subsequently locked her own son in a dungeon beneath the house to wait until the deed's time-bar had passed. After Conan succeeded in exposing the two, they were arrested and the case was resolved.<ref>Manga Chapters 17-19: Scary Building Case</ref>

In time, the four kept stumbling into more and more criminal cases, which were resolved thanks to Conan's deductive skills and initiative. Particularly after the case involving a sizable cache of stolen Italian gold coins,<ref>Manga Chapters 36-39: Code Sheet Case</ref> Ayumi, Genta and Mitsuhiko developed a taste for detective work and impulsively decided to become investigators themselves, mostly for fame and glory. After advertising their services in school,<ref>Manga Chapter 56: Formation! The Detective Boys</ref> they have become actively involved in many criminal cases provided by their schoolmates, though more often than not they keep accidentally coming upon such during their free-time activities. Some time later, their new classmate (and former [[Black Organization]] member) [[Ai Haibara]] was drafted into the group. Two adults also joined this group informally, namely Professor [[Hiroshi Agasa]], who provides the group with special gadgets to aid them in their adventures, and their classteacher [[Sumiko Kobayashi]], a mystery novel enthusiast who proclaimed herself their manager.

As the series progresses the Detective Boys members start to show more potential into becoming detective, and often try to come up with theories(mostly from Mitsuhiko and Ai), trying to prove that they do not always need help from Conan.

In most cases, the Detective Boys act more like aides to Conan, who is the group's (mostly undisputed) leader due to his intelligence, extensive criminal knowledge and experience. In this role they function mostly as additional pairs of eyes who provide Conan with trivial-seeming but important clues, and display little investigative brilliance or determination of their own. However, in some cases - especially where Conan is not present or out of commission - the other members, particularly Ai and Mitsuhiko, have demonstrated that the Detective Boys have the potential of becoming skilled investigators in their own right.
