Ran is a childhood friend of [[Shinichi Kudo]]. She is the daughter of [[Kogoro Mouri]], a private detective, and [[Eri Kisaki]], a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was seven,<ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend next to Shinichi is her classmate [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], who constantly teases her about her relationship with Shinichi.

One year before the series' start, Ran and Shinichi had gone to the United States to visit Shinichi's parents in New York. They met [[Yukiko Kudo|his mother]] and her actress friend, [[Sharon Vineyard]] (also known as Vermouth, a member of the [[Black Organization]]). Later that evening, Vermouth disguised as a serial killer to do BO work, and was saved by Ran and Shinichi who encountered her on their way back from a show turned murder case. Vermouth had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull her to safety. == Personality ==
Ran's greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves. She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents.

Ran is the captain of the karate team of Teitan High School<ref>[[Volume 1#File 001 - The Heisei Holmes|Volume 1, File 1: "The Heisei Holmes"]]</ref> and therefore is very powerful as demonstrated when she won her Regional Championship. She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble with her karate skills on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus - unlike her friend Sonoko - absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.<ref name="e274">[[Truth About the Haunted House|Episode 274-275: Truth About the Haunted House]]</ref> Men also tend to pay her a lot of undue romantic attention, a fact that makes Sonoko somewhat jealous (and of which Ran herself is completely unaware).

Ran is a master in karate and has won many karate tournaments; she holds the title of Regional Champion for her age group. In fact, she is very strong to the extent that she can break a stone with ease. In the ninth movie, ''[[Strategy Above the Depths]]'', Conan states that Ran has an unusual amount of stamina.<ref name="m9">[[Strategy Above the Depths|Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths]]</ref>
Though sometimes, for example in the second movie, Ran may not be able to use her karate, whether it's because she is too scared or just because she is just too weakened.<ref name="m2" /> In the fourth movie (''[[Captured in Her Eyes]]''), Ran also was unable to use karate due to suffering of amnesia at the time, but as soon as she recovered her memories she also got the use of her abilities back and incapacitated the culprit who was about to kill her and Conan.<ref name="m4">[[Captured in Her Eyes|Movie 4: Captured in Her Eyes]]</ref> She also have an astonishing amount of luck, having never lost card games and lotteries.

=== Doubts about Conan's identity ===
In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and "prove" her wrong. There are however occasions where she appears to be so sure that Shinichi and Conan are one and the same, such incidents include once when Ran finds Conan asleep on the sofa, she takes off his glasses while he's asleep and notices the huge reseamblance he has to Shinichi as a child, later she confronts him and feels so certain that Conan is Shinichi as it explained his splitting reseamblance to Shinichi when he was younger, possessing Shinichi's great powers of deduction, and even Shinichi's lack of any musical knowledge. However Shinichi's mother unexpectatly shows up and covers for him by explaining that Conan's resembalance to Shinichi when he was younger, because that they're distant relatives and Conan possesing Shinichi's deductive ability is a result of Shinichi teaching Conan.
At another time she is also certain her reasoning was correct, as Conan had been critically injured and required a blood donation, Ran donated her blood but somehow knew his blood type without being told revealing that she knew that Conan was actually Shinichi. So with the help of [[Ai Haibara]] he manages to fool Ran by allowing Shinichi to appear before her while Conan was present (who was really Ai Haibara in disguise).

==== Ran's Suspicion ====
[[File:Ran_suspecting_Conan.jpg|thumb|left|200px|Ran suspecting Conan's identity]] Conan once forgets his cell phone on the couch and Ran, in the room at the time, remembers to send an email to Shinichi to let him know that she's going with her father on a case and that his presence would be most welcome as Kogoro could use the help. Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "''Did you look?''". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity.<ref name="e398">[[The Weird Family's Commission|Episode 398-399: The Weird Family's Commission]]</ref>
The first time Ran suspected Conan was episode 7. After seeing the similarity between Conan and Shinichi's occupation deduction just simply by touching someone's hand, she started being very suspicious and kept an eye on Conan the whole case. However, Professor Agasa called Ran with the voice changing bowtie at the end and Conan was free of suspicion for a while.

Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.<ref name="e398" />

At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. And Ran, pleased with the situation, clears her mind out of all suspicions she had about Conan's identity<ref>[[Ran's Suspicions|Episode 400: Ran's Suspicions]]</ref> - at least, consciously.

During "The Whereabouts of the Embarrassing Charm" case we can see that Ran's suspicions are arising again. This is thanks to Heiji, openly revealed the fingerprint matching during the "Murder, Shinichi Kudo" case. Kazuha gave a likely, but not to Conan or Heiji, explanation on how Shinichi's fingerprints got onto the handcuff's piece of chain. However, for some reason Ran talked directly to Conan, which he pointed out that she is talking to the wrong person. Unconsciously she thinks she is talking to Shinichi.

Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri have been friends ever since childhood. When the two first met, they were at kindergarten age, and later they were playmates. [[Eri Kisaki]], Ran's mom, and [[Yukiko Kudo]], Shinichi's mom, would often set playdates for the two to play together.<ref>[[Shinichi Kudo's Childhood Adventure|Episode 472-473: Shinichi Kudo's Childhood Adventure]]</ref> Shinichi and Ran have stayed close all the way through the present age, which has led to both of them feeling romantic feelings for each other. Shinichi, as Conan, often calls Ran, and using his bowtie, talks to Ran in his normal teenager voice, mostly to calm her when she is feeling fear about if he is hurt, or when he wants to make her feel better because she feels lonely without him. As Conan, Shinichi has grown closer to Ran. Ran is shown throughout to be dedicated to Shinichi, and will always love him no matter where he is. Shinichi himself also has feelings for Ran, and loves her as well. He is very protective of her when there are other guys with her, and he keeps her away from any other man. He has even confessed his feelings for her, though he was Conan when this occurred.<ref> Ran did not believe him, because of that fact.</ref >

Although various characters, including [[Heiji Hattori]], have told him to just admit everything to her, for the sake of her heart, he realizes he cannot tell her, because he does not want to put her in danger from the Black Organization, as he considers her life more important than his. People also look at them as a couple by how they act and how they talk about each other. When asked to Ran though, she does say that Shinichi is her boyfriend (this causes him/conan to blush slightly but never really says anything about it), though Shinichi finally confessed to her in London. After that, Sonoko teased her because she did not say anything in return. Sonoko said that maybe Shinichi will transfer to another girl because Ran did not reply. Conan/Shinichi heard their conversation and said in his mind, "Like I'd ever do that." He finally confesses somehow to Ran during the Holmes Revelation arc.

At one point, she was very cold and distant towards Ran, just like she was to most other people. The Detective Boys were informally founded when [[Ayumi Yoshida]] and [[Genta Kojima]] decided to investigate a mansion which was once a murder site and had been abandoned. Conan and his classmate [[Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya]] were drafted into accompanying the two, and the foursome entered the house. In the course of this adventure, Conan found out that the house was still inhabited by the mother and son of the murder victim; the son had killed his father in a fit of rage over his abusive behavior, and his mother had subsequently locked her own son in a dungeon beneath the house to wait until the deed's time-bar had passed. After Conan succeeded in exposing the two, they were arrested and the case was resolved.<ref>Manga Chapters 17-19: Scary Building Case</ref>

In time, the four kept stumbling into more and more criminal cases, which were resolved thanks to Conan's deductive skills and initiative. Particularly after the case involving a sizable cache of stolen Italian gold coins,<ref>Manga Chapters 36-39: Code Sheet Case</ref> Ayumi, Genta and Mitsuhiko developed a taste for detective work and impulsively decided to become investigators themselves, mostly for fame and glory. After advertising their services in school,<ref>Manga Chapter 56: Formation! The Detective Boys</ref> they have become actively involved in many criminal cases provided by their schoolmates, though more often than not they keep accidentally coming upon such during their free-time activities. Some time later, their new classmate (and former [[Black Organization]] member) [[Ai Haibara]] was drafted into the group. Two adults also joined this group informally, namely Professor [[Hiroshi Agasa]], who provides the group with special gadgets to aid them in their adventures, and their classteacher [[Sumiko Kobayashi]], a mystery novel enthusiast who proclaimed herself their manager.

In most cases, the Detective Boys act more like aides to Conan, who is the group's (mostly undisputed) leader due to his intelligence, extensive criminal knowledge and experience. In this role they function mostly as additional pairs of eyes who provide Conan with trivial-seeming but important clues, and display little investigative brilliance or determination of their own. As the series progresses, however, the other members, particularly Ai and Mitsuhiko, have demonstrated in some cases - especially where Conan is not present or out of commission - that the Detective Boys have the potential of becoming skilled investigators in their own right. Of course, while Akemi lived a normal life, Haibara was sent to America as a small child to go to school and was groomed to finish her parents' research <ref> File 384-386 Volume 38 File 2-4</ref>. She was born to an English mother, Elena Miyano, and a Japanese father, Atsushi Miyano. Both of whom were members of the organization, and deceased. A prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project for the organization. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Black Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. (Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 9: "Akai's Past") According to the FBI’s description, Shiho was “a scientist for them” at the time. Furthermore this took place in Japan since everyone was speaking Japanese, Akemi lived in Japan, and the FBI bust two years prior to the current timeline was in Japan (607 pg 8). If Shiho is 18 now, she would be 13 at the time Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization and she was already a scientist for them at this point and high ranked.</ref> Her codename in the Organization is "Sherry", after the alcoholic drink.

Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. She discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that a rare few of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect when they used it on [[Shinichi Kudo]], the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. Shiho searched Shinichi's house twice after he had been shrunk to confirm his death for the Black Organization. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation after she searched his house for a second time and found that his clothes from primary school were missing. Shiho then confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him after all.

With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 to commit suicide, but instead shrunk into a seven or eight year old girl. As Ai Haibara, she acts older than she is supposed to be, which the Detective Boys refer to her as "cool". But despite her jaded demeanor, she has shown to be kind and caring at occasion, though usually more to animals than people. She's a bit quiet, though this may be due to her caution to keep herself hidden from the Black Organization. She is sometimes cold and very analytical, but there are times where she softens her demeanor and reveals herself to be a true friend. Shiho is generally a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (in the film ''Countdown to Heaven'', she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Smart, stubborn, and with a somewhat twisted sense of humor, she tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions that usually result in his gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret.

== Plot overview ==
=== Introduction of Ai Haibara ===
Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives, and Conan realizes it's at Agasa's home.

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of Natsume Sōseki. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya.

The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she's a girl named Shiho Miyano, former member of the Black Organization. She actualy betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869 which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister...which is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made and subsequently bringing the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape.

Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Later that day, Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk only to have a virus delete all the data.

=== The first head to head battle arc ===

Haibara is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar, but turns into an adult after she drinks [[baijiu]]. Despite wearing glasses and janitor clothing, Gin and Vodka recognize her and shoot her repeatedly until Conan appears. He shoots Gin with his needle, but Gin doesn't fall asleep. He tells Haibara to jump into the chimmey, and Vodka shoots at him, but he gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm due to trying to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills her, but Conan rescues her after Pisco accidentally causes a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before he's able to tell him the truth about Shiho Miyano. Worried that the organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city.

=== The Desperate Revival arc ===
During the Desperate Revival episodes, Conan finds out that Ran suspects him of being Shinichi, due to Ran knowing Conan's blood type (for a blood transfusion). While Conan is in the hospital contemplating about admitting his identity, Haibara enters at night and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found Haibara out due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had as a child. However, she pulls the trigger and a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point; that both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a prototype antidote for the shrinking drug and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara knocks him out using the sleeping needle. She then switches Shinichi into Conan's clothes after the antidote runs out.

=== A new threat: Vermouth, and the carjacking incident ===
Aside from Gin and Vodka being the most recurring members, a female member introduced late into the series named Vermouth also starts to play a huge role in the series. She makes her first appearance in Episodes 176-178, but her talents aren't revealed until Episode 230. She disguises herself as a doctor named Araide and is one of the few characters that learns who Conan really is. In one episode she is saved by Ran and Shinichi from falling through a fire escape, and keeps his secret unknown from the rest possibly because of this reason. She disguises herself as two actresses, Chris Vineyard and Sharon Vineyard. It is noted several times in the series that she is a master of disguise, who trained with Shinichi's mother in the past.

=== The second head to head battle, and revealed allegiances ===
[[Image:Episode_345_Screencap.jpg‎|thumb|right|180px|Encounter with Vermouth.]] In Episode 345, many identities are finally unveiled: Vermouth is revealed to be Dr. Araide, Chris Vineyard, [[Sharon Vineyard]], and the silver-haired serial killer in Shinichi's New York Case; Jodie Saintemillion is revealed to be an undercover FBI agent working towards capturing Vermouth, who killed her father when she was younger; Shuichi Akai is confirmed to be an FBI agent, and one with great skill too--enough to make the boss of the Black Organization believe that he is their ''Silver Bullet.'' Near the end of the episode, it becomes clear that Vermouth's purpose was to seek and eliminate Sherry, but her attempts are thwarted by several people: Shinichi/Conan, Jodie Saintemillion, Shuichi Akai, and even Ran. When she becomes cornered, she takes Conan hostage and drives away into a forest. There, she makes a call to her boss (still nameless), and to her surprise, Conan was recording the entire conversation. In order to preserve the organization's secrecy, she sprays sleeping gas in the car, putting both herself and Conan to sleep. She claims that this would be a duel--whoever wakes up first will win. Vermouth does indeed wake up first, but does not kill Conan. Instead, she just crushes his recording device. Ultimately, the only clue Conan gained from this whole ordeal is the ringtone that the boss uses; this is mentioned in Episode 425 as well, although its importance has not yet been revealed.

In Episode 394, Conan figures out the boss's number, but Haibara warns him not to call it because it is "[[Pandora's Box]]", Conan then thinks he can get officer Takagi to figure out who the number belongs to. But then Haibara warns if he does, officer Takagi will be killed.

Although Vermouth often comes off as evil and malicious, her allegiance is rather ambiguous. She chooses to protect both Conan/Shinichi and Ran, most likely because they let her live back in the New York Case when she was disguised as the silver-haired serial killer. At the end of the episode, she could have very well killed Shinichi, but instead she lets him live and even drapes her coat over his sleeping body so he wouldn't get cold. She even kept her promise with Shinichi to stop her attempt on killing Sherry/Shiho. For some reason, she seems to wish for the Black Organization to be taken down as well--for she believes that Shinichi Kudo is their true ''Silver Bullet.

As Conan and Haibara investigate a normal case, Haibara feels that an organization member is around. The organization member which she felt is implied to be one of the innocent suspects, [[Subaru Okiya]]. Conan invites Okiya to live in Kudo's house since Okiya's apartment was burnt. Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[Scar Akai|scarred Shuichi Akai]]. Despite the apparent implications, [[Bourbon]]'s true identity and Okiya's true motivations remain unconfirmed. At the end of Episode 543 (Anime), Subaru Okiya can be seen drinking a bottle of Baker's Mark, which is a brand of Kentucky Bourbon.

Ai Haibara seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for [[Conan]]/[[Shinichi]], although she never truly admits to it. In the fourth movie, she says to Conan that she wished she could forget her memories about the Black Organization and the death of her sister and the pill, claiming that all she wants to be was a normal little girl and live together with Conan forever. But then as Conan was shocked by the words, Haibara immediately said she was lying. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friend or otherwise. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence, she finds it easier to talk to him. Also, he is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down.

==== Hiroshi Agasa ====
The relationship between Haibara and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite what their actual ages are, Haibara often times acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occassions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach<ref name=Depths>[[Strategy Above the Depths|Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths]]</ref>, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. There's also been instances where she'll automatically step in front of Agasa in cases of danger.<ref name=Eyes>[[Captured in Her Eyes|Movie 4: Captured in Her Eyes]]</ref> Out of all the people she's met, Haibara seems most comfortable about acting herself with Professor Agasa; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the Black Organization, and took her in.

There are instances where Haibara will caution Conan from actions that involve [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], though it's assumed this is due merely to the fact that she wants to keep her identity hidden. At one point, she was very cold and distant towards Ran, just like she was to most other people. Of course, while Akemi lived a normal life, Haibara was sent to America as a small child to go to school and was groomed to finish her parents' research <ref> File 384-386 Volume 38 File 2-4</ref>. She was born to an English mother, Elena Miyano, and a Japanese father, Atsushi Miyano. Both of whom were members of the organization, and deceased. A prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project for the organization. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Black Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. (Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 9: "Akai's Past") According to the FBI’s description, Shiho was “a scientist for them” at the time. Furthermore this took place in Japan since everyone was speaking Japanese, Akemi lived in Japan, and the FBI bust two years prior to the current timeline was in Japan (607 pg 8). If Shiho is 18 now, she would be 13 at the time Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization and she was already a scientist for them at this point and high ranked.</ref> Her codename in the Organization is "Sherry", after the alcoholic drink.

Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. She discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that a rare few of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Shiho searched Shinichi's house twice after he had been shrunk to confirm his death for the Black Organization. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation after she searched his house for a second time and found that his clothes from primary school were missing. Shiho then confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him after all.

== Plot overview ==
=== Introduction of Ai Haibara ===
Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives, and Conan realizes it's at Agasa's home.

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of Natsume Sōseki. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya.

The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she's a girl named Shiho Miyano, former member of the Black Organization. She actualy betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869 which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister...which is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made and subsequently bringing the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape.

Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Later that day, Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk only to have a virus delete all the data.

=== The first head to head battle arc ===

Haibara is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar, but turns into an adult after she drinks [[baijiu]]. Despite wearing glasses and janitor clothing, Gin and Vodka recognize her and shoot her repeatedly until Conan appears. He shoots Gin with his needle, but Gin doesn't fall asleep. He tells Haibara to jump into the chimmey, and Vodka shoots at him, but he gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm due to trying to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills her, but Conan rescues her after Pisco accidentally causes a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before he's able to tell him the truth about Shiho Miyano. Worried that the organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city.

=== The Desperate Revival arc ===
During the Desperate Revival episodes, Conan finds out that Ran suspects him of being Shinichi, due to Ran knowing Conan's blood type (for a blood transfusion). While Conan is in the hospital contemplating about admitting his identity, Haibara enters at night and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found Haibara out due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had as a child. However, she pulls the trigger and a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point; that both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a prototype antidote for the shrinking drug and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara knocks him out using the sleeping needle. She then switches Shinichi into Conan's clothes after the antidote runs out.

=== A new threat: Vermouth, and the carjacking incident ===
Aside from Gin and Vodka being the most recurring members, a female member introduced late into the series named Vermouth also starts to play a huge role in the series. She makes her first appearance in Episodes 176-178, but her talents aren't revealed until Episode 230. She disguises herself as a doctor named Araide and is one of the few characters that learns who Conan really is. In one episode she is saved by Ran and Shinichi from falling through a fire escape, and keeps his secret unknown from the rest possibly because of this reason. She disguises herself as two actresses, Chris Vineyard and Sharon Vineyard. It is noted several times in the series that she is a master of disguise, who trained with Shinichi's mother in the past.

=== The second head to head battle, and revealed allegiances ===
[[Image:Episode_345_Screencap.jpg‎|thumb|right|180px|Encounter with Vermouth.]] In Episode 345, many identities are finally unveiled: Vermouth is revealed to be Dr. Araide, Chris Vineyard, [[Sharon Vineyard]], and the silver-haired serial killer in Shinichi's New York Case; Jodie Saintemillion is revealed to be an undercover FBI agent working towards capturing Vermouth, who killed her father when she was younger; Shuichi Akai is confirmed to be an FBI agent, and one with great skill too--enough to make the boss of the Black Organization believe that he is their ''Silver Bullet.'' Near the end of the episode, it becomes clear that Vermouth's purpose was to seek and eliminate Sherry, but her attempts are thwarted by several people: Shinichi/Conan, Jodie Saintemillion, Shuichi Akai, and even Ran. When she becomes cornered, she takes Conan hostage and drives away into a forest. There, she makes a call to her boss (still nameless), and to her surprise, Conan was recording the entire conversation. In order to preserve the organization's secrecy, she sprays sleeping gas in the car, putting both herself and Conan to sleep. She claims that this would be a duel--whoever wakes up first will win. Vermouth does indeed wake up first, but does not kill Conan. Instead, she just crushes his recording device. Ultimately, the only clue Conan gained from this whole ordeal is the ringtone that the boss uses; this is mentioned in Episode 425 as well, although its importance has not yet been revealed.

In Episode 394, Conan figures out the boss's number, but Haibara warns him not to call it because it is "[[Pandora's Box]]", Conan then thinks he can get officer Takagi to figure out who the number belongs to. But then Haibara warns if he does, officer Takagi will be killed.

Although Vermouth often comes off as evil and malicious, her allegiance is rather ambiguous. She chooses to protect both Conan/Shinichi and Ran, most likely because they let her live back in the New York Case when she was disguised as the silver-haired serial killer. At the end of the episode, she could have very well killed Shinichi, but instead she lets him live and even drapes her coat over his sleeping body so he wouldn't get cold. She even kept her promise with Shinichi to stop her attempt on killing Sherry/Shiho. For some reason, she seems to wish for the Black Organization to be taken down as well--for she believes that Shinichi Kudo is their true ''Silver Bullet.

As Conan and Haibara investigate a normal case, Haibara feels that an organization member is around. Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[Scar Akai|scarred Shuichi Akai]]. Despite the apparent implications, [[Bourbon]]'s true identity and Okiya's true motivations remain unconfirmed. At the end of Episode 543 (Anime), Subaru Okiya can be seen drinking a bottle of Baker's Mark, which is a brand of Kentucky Bourbon.

Ai Haibara seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for [[Conan]]/[[Shinichi]], although she never truly admits to it. In the fourth movie, she says to Conan that she wished she could forget her memories about the Black Organization and the death of her sister and the pill, claiming that all she wants to be was a normal little girl and live together with Conan forever. But then as Conan was shocked by the words, Haibara immediately said she was lying. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friend or otherwise. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence, she finds it easier to talk to him. Also, he is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down.

==== Hiroshi Agasa ====
The relationship between Haibara and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite what their actual ages are, Haibara often times acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occassions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach<ref name=Depths>[[Strategy Above the Depths|Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths]]</ref>, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. There's also been instances where she'll automatically step in front of Agasa in cases of danger.<ref name=Eyes>[[Captured in Her Eyes|Movie 4: Captured in Her Eyes]]</ref> Out of all the people she's met, Haibara seems most comfortable about acting herself with Professor Agasa; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the Black Organization, and took her in.

Of course, while Akemi lived a normal life, Haibara was sent to America as a small child to go to school and was groomed to finish her parents' research <ref> File 384-386 Volume 38 File 2-4</ref>. She was born to an English mother, Elena Miyano, and a Japanese father, Atsushi Miyano. Both of whom were members of the organization, and deceased. A prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project for the organization. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Black Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Black Organization five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect when they used it on [[Shinichi Kudo]], the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. As Ai Haibara, she acts older than she is supposed to be, which the Detective Boys refer to her as "cool". But despite her jaded demeanor, she has shown to be kind and caring at occasion, though usually more to animals than people. She's a bit quiet, though this may be due to her caution to keep herself hidden from the Black Organization. She is sometimes cold and very analytical, but there are times where she softens her demeanor and reveals herself to be a true friend. Shiho is generally a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (in the film ''Countdown to Heaven'', she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Smart, stubborn, and with a somewhat twisted sense of humor, she tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions that usually result in his gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret.

== Plot overview ==
=== Introduction of Ai Haibara ===
Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives, and Conan realizes it's at Agasa's home.

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of Natsume Sōseki. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya.

The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she's a girl named Shiho Miyano, former member of the Black Organization. She actualy betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869 which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister...which is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made and subsequently bringing the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape.

Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Later that day, Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk only to have a virus delete all the data.

=== The first head to head battle arc ===

Haibara is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar, but turns into an adult after she drinks [[baijiu]]. Despite wearing glasses and janitor clothing, Gin and Vodka recognize her and shoot her repeatedly until Conan appears. He shoots Gin with his needle, but Gin doesn't fall asleep. He tells Haibara to jump into the chimmey, and Vodka shoots at him, but he gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm due to trying to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills her, but Conan rescues her after Pisco accidentally causes a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before he's able to tell him the truth about Shiho Miyano. Worried that the organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city.

=== The Desperate Revival arc ===
During the Desperate Revival episodes, Conan finds out that Ran suspects him of being Shinichi, due to Ran knowing Conan's blood type (for a blood transfusion). While Conan is in the hospital contemplating about admitting his identity, Haibara enters at night and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found Haibara out due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had as a child. However, she pulls the trigger and a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point; that both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a prototype antidote for the shrinking drug and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara knocks him out using the sleeping needle. She then switches Shinichi into Conan's clothes after the antidote runs out.

=== A new threat: Vermouth, and the carjacking incident ===
Aside from Gin and Vodka being the most recurring members, a female member introduced late into the series named Vermouth also starts to play a huge role in the series. She makes her first appearance in Episodes 176-178, but her talents aren't revealed until Episode 230. She disguises herself as a doctor named Araide and is one of the few characters that learns who Conan really is. In one episode she is saved by Ran and Shinichi from falling through a fire escape, and keeps his secret unknown from the rest possibly because of this reason. She disguises herself as two actresses, Chris Vineyard and Sharon Vineyard. It is noted several times in the series that she is a master of disguise, who trained with Shinichi's mother in the past.

=== The second head to head battle, and revealed allegiances ===
[[Image:Episode_345_Screencap.jpg‎|thumb|right|180px|Encounter with Vermouth.]] In Episode 345, many identities are finally unveiled: Vermouth is revealed to be Dr. Araide, Chris Vineyard, [[Sharon Vineyard]], and the silver-haired serial killer in Shinichi's New York Case; Jodie Saintemillion is revealed to be an undercover FBI agent working towards capturing Vermouth, who killed her father when she was younger; Shuichi Akai is confirmed to be an FBI agent, and one with great skill too--enough to make the boss of the Black Organization believe that he is their ''Silver Bullet.'' Near the end of the episode, it becomes clear that Vermouth's purpose was to seek and eliminate Sherry, but her attempts are thwarted by several people: Shinichi/Conan, Jodie Saintemillion, Shuichi Akai, and even Ran. When she becomes cornered, she takes Conan hostage and drives away into a forest. There, she makes a call to her boss (still nameless), and to her surprise, Conan was recording the entire conversation. In order to preserve the organization's secrecy, she sprays sleeping gas in the car, putting both herself and Conan to sleep. She claims that this would be a duel--whoever wakes up first will win. Vermouth does indeed wake up first, but does not kill Conan. Instead, she just crushes his recording device. Ultimately, the only clue Conan gained from this whole ordeal is the ringtone that the boss uses; this is mentioned in Episode 425 as well, although its importance has not yet been revealed.

In Episode 394, Conan figures out the boss's number, but Haibara warns him not to call it because it is "[[Pandora's Box]]", Conan then thinks he can get officer Takagi to figure out who the number belongs to. But then Haibara warns if he does, officer Takagi will be killed.

Although Vermouth often comes off as evil and malicious, her allegiance is rather ambiguous. She chooses to protect both Conan/Shinichi and Ran, most likely because they let her live back in the New York Case when she was disguised as the silver-haired serial killer. At the end of the episode, she could have very well killed Shinichi, but instead she lets him live and even drapes her coat over his sleeping body so he wouldn't get cold. She even kept her promise with Shinichi to stop her attempt on killing Sherry/Shiho. For some reason, she seems to wish for the Black Organization to be taken down as well--for she believes that Shinichi Kudo is their true ''Silver Bullet.

Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[Scar Akai|scarred Shuichi Akai]]. Despite the apparent implications, [[Bourbon]]'s true identity and Okiya's true motivations remain unconfirmed. At the end of Episode 543 (Anime), Subaru Okiya can be seen drinking a bottle of Baker's Mark, which is a brand of Kentucky Bourbon.

In the fourth movie, she says to Conan that she wished she could forget her memories about the Black Organization and the death of her sister and the pill, claiming that all she wants to be was a normal little girl and live together with Conan forever. But then as Conan was shocked by the words, Haibara immediately said she was lying. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friend or otherwise. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence, she finds it easier to talk to him. Also, he is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down.

Ran is a childhood friend of [[Shinichi Kudo]]. She is the daughter of [[Kogoro Mouri]], a private detective, and [[Eri Kisaki]], a lawyer. Her parents separated when she was seven,<ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend next to Shinichi is her classmate [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], who constantly teases her about her relationship with Shinichi.

One year before the series' start, Ran and Shinichi had gone to the United States to visit Shinichi's parents in New York. They met [[Yukiko Kudo|his mother]] and her actress friend, [[Sharon Vineyard]] (also known as Vermouth, a member of the [[Black Organization]]). Later that evening, Vermouth disguised as a serial killer to do BO work, and was saved by Ran and Shinichi who encountered her on their way back from a show turned murder case. Vermouth had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull her to safety. Due to this, Sharon gave Ran the nickname "Angel", and Shinichi the nickname "Cool Guy".<ref>[[Volume 34#File 350 - Golden Apple 1|Volumes 34-35, Files 350-354: "Golden Apple 1"]]</ref> Vermouth later showed hesitance to kill Ran and later Conan as well,<ref name="e345" /> but whether or not it was because of any emotional attachment is unclear.

Ran's greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves. She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents.

Ran is the captain of the karate team of Teitan High School<ref>[[Volume 1#File 001 - The Heisei Holmes|Volume 1, File 1: "The Heisei Holmes"]]</ref> and therefore is very powerful as demonstrated when she won her Regional Championship. She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble with her karate skills on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus - unlike her friend Sonoko - absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre.<ref name="e274">[[Truth About the Haunted House|Episode 274-275: Truth About the Haunted House]]</ref> Men also tend to pay her a lot of undue romantic attention, a fact that makes Sonoko somewhat jealous (and of which Ran herself is completely unaware).

In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and "prove" her wrong. There are however occasions where she appears to be so sure that Shinichi and Conan are one and the same, such incidents include once when Ran finds Conan asleep on the sofa, she takes off his glasses while he's asleep and notices the huge reseamblance he has to Shinichi as a child, later she confronts him and feels so certain that Conan is Shinichi as it explained his splitting reseamblance to Shinichi when he was younger, possessing Shinichi's great powers of deduction, and even Shinichi's lack of any musical knowledge. However Shinichi's mother unexpectatly shows up and covers for him by explaining that Conan's resembalance to Shinichi when he was younger, because that they're distant relatives and Conan possesing Shinichi's deductive ability is a result of Shinichi teaching Conan.
At another time she is also certain her reasoning was correct, as Conan had been critically injured and required a blood donation, Ran donated her blood but somehow knew his blood type without being told revealing that she knew that Conan was actually Shinichi. So with the help of [[Ai Haibara]] he manages to fool Ran by allowing Shinichi to appear before her while Conan was present (who was really Ai Haibara in disguise).

==== Ran's Suspicion ====

Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "''Did you look?''". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity.<ref name="e398">[[The Weird Family's Commission|Episode 398-399: The Weird Family's Commission]]</ref>
The first time Ran suspected Conan was episode 7. After seeing the similarity between Conan and Shinichi's occupation deduction just simply by touching someone's hand, she started being very suspicious and kept an eye on Conan the whole case. However, Professor Agasa called Ran with the voice changing bowtie at the end and Conan was free of suspicion for a while.

Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.<ref name="e398" />

At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. Not much is given about Toichi as Kaitou Kid. However, we do know that at some point in time, a dark organization forced him to steal gems to find [[Pandora Gem |Pandora]]. His refusal led to his death in a "magic accident."

After the death of Toichi, Jii lived by himself. Over the course of eight years, he grew angrier and angrier until he donned the costume of Kaitou Kid in order to lure out the organization that killed Toichi. He was only dressed as Kid twice before Kaito took over.

In both civilian and costumed life, Kaitou Kid is a compulsive trickster who is drawn to any challenge just for the sheer thrill of overcoming all hazards in the end. Kid is infamous for having a rather overconfident (close to the point of arrogance) attitude, always preferring to create as big a bang as possible. He loves nothing more then leading the police in wild goose chases, letting them get within a hair of catching him before exiting one way or another. Seemingly having a soft-spot for his fans, there has been more then one occasion when Kid has refused to show when the police tried to bar the general public from witnessing his act. Generally, when these instances occur, one of Kid's tricks rely, one way or another, on his ability to blend in with a crowd.

Kaitou Kid is also quite a charmer, seeming to always know just what to say to the ladies to leave them speechless. Kid hates to see others get hurt, and he never hesitates in leaping to rescue someone, whether physically or mentally. Despite his low reputation in some quarters, Kid does have a sense of honor, inasmuch that he decides to leave the loot behind if it has no further purpose other than having challenged his trickster skills, doesn't contain Pandora, or when a more humane background stands behind their existence. These qualities are some of the reasons why he and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] occasionally end up as allies in a common cause.

After the death of Toichi, Jii lived by himself. Over the course of eight years, he grew angrier and angrier until he donned the costume of Kaitou Kid in order to lure out the organization that killed Toichi. He was only dressed as Kid twice before Kaito took over.

In both civilian and costumed life, Kaitou Kid is a compulsive trickster who is drawn to any challenge just for the sheer thrill of overcoming all hazards in the end. Kid is infamous for having a rather overconfident (close to the point of arrogance) attitude, always preferring to create as big a bang as possible. He loves nothing more then leading the police in wild goose chases, letting them get within a hair of catching him before exiting one way or another. Seemingly having a soft-spot for his fans, there has been more then one occasion when Kid has refused to show when the police tried to bar the general public from witnessing his act. Generally, when these instances occur, one of Kid's tricks rely, one way or another, on his ability to blend in with a crowd.

Kaitou Kid is also quite a charmer, seeming to always know just what to say to the ladies to leave them speechless. Kid hates to see others get hurt, and he never hesitates in leaping to rescue someone, whether physically or mentally. Despite his low reputation in some quarters, Kid does have a sense of honor, inasmuch that he decides to leave the loot behind if it has no further purpose other than having challenged his trickster skills, doesn't contain Pandora, or when a more humane background stands behind their existence. These qualities are some of the reasons why he and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] occasionally end up as allies in a common cause.

For some as yet unexplained reason, Kaito suffers from a severe case of ichthyophobia (fear of fish).

After the death of Toichi, Jii lived by himself. Over the course of eight years, he grew angrier and angrier until he donned the costume of Kaitou Kid in order to lure out the organization that killed Toichi. He was only dressed as Kid twice before Kaito took over.

In both civilian and costumed life, Kaitou Kid is a compulsive trickster who is drawn to any challenge just for the sheer thrill of overcoming all hazards in the end. Kid is infamous for having a rather overconfident (close to the point of arrogance) attitude, always preferring to create as big a bang as possible. He loves nothing more then leading the police in wild goose chases, letting them get within a hair of catching him before exiting one way or another. Seemingly having a soft-spot for his fans, there has been more then one occasion when Kid has refused to show when the police tried to bar the general public from witnessing his act. Generally, when these instances occur, one of Kid's tricks rely, one way or another, on his ability to blend in with a crowd.

Kaitou Kid is also quite a charmer, seeming to always know just what to say to the ladies to leave them speechless. Kid hates to see others get hurt, and he never hesitates in leaping to rescue someone, whether physically or mentally. Despite his low reputation in some quarters, Kid does have a sense of honor, inasmuch that he decides to leave the loot behind if it has no further purpose other than having challenged his trickster skills, doesn't contain Pandora, or when a more humane background stands behind their existence. These qualities are some of the reasons why he and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] occasionally end up as allies in a common cause.

For some as yet unexplained reason, Kaito suffers from a severe case of ichthyophobia (fear of fish).

== Plot ==
[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] and [[Ai Haibara]] visit the “Miss Japanesque” award reception in the new Tokyo Bell Wood Hotel, which is owned and run by the Suzuki Company, upon [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko’s]] invitation. Originally, [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] wanted to attend as well because the Miss Japanesque, Karen Kotobuki, is his current object of affection, but in his eagerness to get ready for the party he slipped on the stairs and broke his leg, rendering him a hospital bed patient.

As they prepare to enter the hotel, they are met by Mimi Kotobuki, Karen’s older sister and manager, who entrusts them with troubling news: Someone has left a threatening letter in Karen’s room, in which the stalker demands of her to return his affection and become his “marionette”, or else suffer death. Karen is neither impressed or intimated, however, and intends to attend the party with a throwing knife stuck in her garter. While inspecting the letter, Conan notices a strange, sweet smell lingering on the paper.

As the group helps itself on the buffet, Sonoko asks Ran to call [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] to ask him whether he can attend to the case. Upon Agasa’s suggestion, Conan prepares to call Ran back when he is suddenly seized by a very familiar seizure. Right afterwards, Ai also begins to suffer these seizures and presumes that they stem from the contents of a rum cake they have both just eaten and which incidentally are about to neutralize the effects of the [[APTX 4869]] they have been forced to ingest. They just barely manage to hide in a woman’s locker room to ride out the transformation back to their actual ages.

In the meantime, just before the ceremony, Karen contemptuously challenges her competitors, Sumika Abe (2nd place) and Kyoumi Kawate (3rd place), about their outfits and entices the head of the election committee, Daigo Miura, and the show’s director, Shouichi Amano, into enforcing her petty demands; she later also talks down to her sister that way. The ceremony initially runs as planned, but then Shinichi phones Agasa and informs him about the most recent developments and fetch him sole clothing. After a first startled meeting with Ai’s adult form, Agasa is asked by Shinichi to take Ai out of the hotel while he remains to check out the threatening message. He begins to check out the hotel, in particular the rooms of the contestants and the route to the stage.

While watching the elevators, Shinichi witnesses Karen and her troupe returning to their suites to prepare for the next stage of the ceremony and her attitude as a source of possible resentment, and then overhears Sumika and Kyoumi dropping a remark about puppets which sparks his interest. But as he prepares to follow them upstairs, Ran, who has taken to searching the hotel for Conan, Ai and Agasa, approaches his location. Desperate to avoid a meeting and uncomfortable questions, Shinichi enters an elevator, but Ran spots and instantly recognizes him, and storming into the elevator cabin, she clutches him tearfully. With no other option left, he decides to reveal himself, and Ran spontaneously decides to accompany him in the investigation.

As Shinichi and Ran exit the elevator on the floor where Karen’s suite is located, they see Mimi knocking frantically at Miura’s door (which is right opposite) and Miura answering it, whereupon she accuses him of kidnapping her sister. Shinichi, posing as Kogoro’s assistant to hide his involvement, and Ran intervene, and Miura confidently allows them to search his suite, to no avail. Mimi allows them to search Karen’s rooms as well, and she and Miura also tell them that Karen’s appearance for the next part of the ceremony will be that she is hoisted onto the stage hanging from wires. Just before preparing to change dresses, Karen was about to take a shower and has gone missing since, as well as the dress she wanted to wear for her entrance. Before Miuri can go into details about the grand entry, Mimi hurriedly excuses herself and runs off, allegedly to search for her sister. Once she has left, however, Miuri remarks how Karen is using her own sister ‘like a marionette’. In turn, Mimi later states that it is Miuri who wants to control Karen like a puppet of his own will.

Shinichi sends Ran back to the party and follows Mimi through the hotel in search for Karen. He follows her beneath the stage, where the hoist has been prepared for Karen’s entrance and where they are shortly joined by Amano, who is also wondering about Karen’s whereabouts. Just minutes away from the next stage of the show, Shinichi and Mimi separate to look for Karen. Only a few seconds before the next part, the director’s assistant announces that Karen has assumed her position, and the show is continued. But a sight of horror awaits the spectators as Karen is hauled upon the stage hanging limply in the wires and manipulated like a marionette – and with her own knife sticking from her chest – before she is dropped down onto the stage, dead!

As panic breaks out and the TV cameras in the room are turned away from this horrifying sight, it briefly records Ai/Shiho, who has returned for the cake, storming inside, and as Ran wants to ask Shinichi about what has happened, she sees him talking to Ai (actually urging her to leave the hotel at once lest the [[Black Organization]] would detect her presence from the live broadcast), and Shinichi earns himself a confrontational reproach from Sonoko and Ran’s devastation upon seeing him with another woman. However, Ai refuses to leave, and as Shinichi fears, [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] indeed spot Ai in the live footage on the Internet and immediately proceed to the hotel. The police soon arrives, and [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] takes official charge of the investigation, in which Shinichi asks him to keep his involvement a secret once more.

After familiarizing Megure with the background information to the case, Shinchi surmises that the murder of Karen and her suspension from the wires must have taken place in the 12 minutes between the time he had left the understage and when the director’s assistant had noticed her below (assuming that she was still alive and just as contemptuous as usual). Meanwhile, Ai begins to search the kitchen for the alcoholic spirit which was used in making the rum cake. When Shinichi tells her to leave, Ran inadvertently bursts in on their conversation and overhears (and misinterprets) Ai’s statements about her and Shinichi’s fates being linked, leaving her all the more devastated. Shinichi entrusts Ai into Ran’s care, and Ai calls herself “Hairi” in order to avoid giving herself away. But as they proceed to the outside of the hotel, where Agasa is waiting, Ai suddenly senses danger, which comes her way in the form of a BO assassin wielding a knife. Ran is able to disarm him and drive him away, but Ai flees back into the hotel; the assassin is subsequently executed by Gin for his failure. Shocked to the core and concerned for Ran and Agasa’s safety, Ai asks Shinichi to abandon her if the BO catches up with her, a suggestion Shinichi refuses to accept. When questioned by Ran and Megure, Shinichi and Agasa claim that “Hairi” is Shinichi’s new assistant.

Afterwards, Megure and Shinichi begin to question the main suspects in the case, which includes all of Karen’s entourage and her two competitors. Mimi states that she has been looking for her sister; Miura, that he has been making several telephone calls from his room; Sumika and Kyoumi have apparently spent the time in question together in Kyoumi’s suite; and Amano (who is hereby revealed to be Karen’s ex-lover), that after meeting Mimi and Shinichi he has been preparing the hoists for the show. Following this, Shinichi, Ai and Megure begin to search the understage, whereupon Shinichi is met with a sensation that something has changed, though too subtly for him to notice immediately. Ai, on the other hand, notices a trail of bloody prints leading from the stage to the elevator, indicating that Karen was quite possibly murdered elsewhere and then brought to the stage for her final entrance.

When they are alone later, looking for clues, Shinichi admits to Ai that he knows that Ran is suffering from their forced separation and that he intends to revert to his former self no matter what it will take, just for her sake. Just as Shinichi later discovers a peculiarity in the murder’s live footage, he suddenly begins to experience another seizure, meaning that he will very soon revert back to his child form. But as his glasses fall onto the stage as he collapses to his knees, he finally discovers the missing link to the murder case. When met by Ran, who does not fail to notice his weakened state, he asks her to assemble all suspects and Inspector Megure for the final confrontation of the culprit, partly to have her avoid seeing him transforming back to Conan. Ran complies and leaves, but not before promising Shinichi to hold onto her trust for him until he is ready to tell her everything.

When all are assembled, Shinichi exposes the culprit for Karen’s murder and the motive behind it. But just as the case is finally closed and Shinichi intends to entrust Ai to the protection of the police, he suddenly notices her missing and rushes back into the hotel, Ran in pursuit. In fact, Ai is about to pack up all the alcoholic drinks in the kitchen for analysis, but with the police withdrawing from the hotel, Gin and Vodka finally make their move and penetrate the facility. Shinichi finds Ai, and in a surge of relief Ai embraces him right in front of Ran. Ai finally decides to tell Ran a half-truth about her relationship with Shinichi: that Shinichi is in fact her protector from the associates of a culprit she had hired him to expose.

The three prepare to leave immediately, but just before she follows Shinichi and Ai, Ran decides to make a phone call to her father to come with a police helicopter. But with his seizures coming more frequently, and thus with his re-transformation being imminent, Shinichi knocks out Ran with his [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch]]. When they hear Gin approaching, Shinichi stays behind as a decoy to cover Ran and Ai’s escape. Upon seeing Shinichi fleeing, Gin correctly assumes that he is Shiho’s “knight protector” and intends to get his body and thus force her out of hiding.

Using the key to Karen’s room Sonoko had passed him earlier during the murder investigation, Shinichi hides in that suite, wounded in the arm by Gin’s gun and wracked with pain from his imminent transformation. Gin and Vodka penetrate the hotel suites one by one until they hit the right one, but just before they can find and eliminate Shinichi, the helicopter Ran called for arrives with Kogoro and Mouri inside. On the roof they find Ran, still unconscious, and Ai, who has transformed back into a child and tells them that Shinichi is in danger. Kogoro quickly figures out which room Shinichi is in, and upon seeing the police helicopter, Gin and Vodka make a swift retreat – leaving an armed hand grenade as a parting gift! The grenade explodes, obliterating the suite ... and apparently, Shinichi with it.

When Ran comes to, he finds herself before the hotel, surrounded by her father, Sonoko, Agasa, Ai and Megure. When she asks about Shinichi, Kogoro tells her bluntly that he is dead, but before Ran can sink into despair, Conan (using his [[Voice-Changing Bowtie]] to imitate his old voice) calls her up to assure her that he is still alive and, while he has gone to attend yet “another case”, he will certainly come back for her. He then asks her to put the professor on the phone, but instead Ai snatches it to ask him how he has survived and Conan reveals that, after shrinking back to his child form just before the grenade went off, he managed to escape through the suite’s laundry chute. While Gin and Vodka are left wondering about the identity of the person who has led them on a wild goose chase (they didn’t get to see his face, though Gin has a brief suspicion, which he dismisses as impossible), Conan rejoins Ran and her father for the usual everyday routine and spends a quiet moment with her watching the full moon.

== Resolution ==
<spoiler>The murderer of Karen Kotobuki is Shouichi Amano. He had hung up Karen in order to make it appear that the writer of the threatening letter was also Karen’s murderer, and her fall onto the stage was meant to hide that she was in fact bludgeoned to death (Shinichi had discovered on the footage that the hair on the back of her head was stuck together by the blood which had poured from the head wound). The threat letter had actually been written by Daigo Miaru (the sweet smell Shinichi/Conan caught on the message was the smell of the cigarettes Miura habitually smokes) after Karen had spurred his romantic advances, but he was not involved in her murder at all.

The evidence encompasses following facts:
*The wound was inflicted on the left hind side, and therefore the culprit must have been left-handed. Amano is the only left-hander among the suspects.
*The "missing detail"-feeling Shinichi had had was in fact triggered by a triple-row stack of paint cans which mysteriously became a double-row right after the murder: Amano emptied a cardboard box of paint cans to hide Karen’s body inside until the onstage revelation, using three cardboard boxes arranged in a row. Evidence for this trick is a bloodstain inside the box with the paint cans.
*Upon Miaru’s (faked) arrest as the murder suspect, Amano would return to the crime scene to dispose of the murder weapon which he had hurriedly hidden inside a stack of carpets in the understage room, just as Shinichi had foreseen he would.

Confronted with the facts, Amano admits that he was suspected by Karen to be the author of the threat message, and that she had derisively named her to be a mere pawn for her personal games, a puppet she could control at her whim, and that she didn’t want to be involved with him anymore; thereupon he had clubbed her in his incited rage.

==Trivia==
*While not canon, this marks the first time that Shinichi, Agasa, Ran, Sonoko and Megure see Haibara in her real age form. The latter three don't know that she is Ai, though Ran has the feeling that Ai seems vaguely familiar to her.
