Professor Agasa takes the Detective Boys camping. It is a beautiful day and they enjoy a view of Mt. Fuji as well as the newly built Nishitamashi Twin Towers, the now tallest buildings in Japan. Mitsuhiko asks Agasa if they can have a look at the towers on their way back and Agasa agrees. They set up camp and Agasa and Ai prepare rice and curry for everyone. Genta chastises Mitsuhiko for not finishing his rice, saying "there will be consequences from the gods, that's what my parents always say".

At night, everyone sleeps soundly in their tents when Genta wakes up because he has to go to the bathroom. On his way back, he spots Ai in a phone booth. He doesn't think there is anything suspicious about it and runs back to the tent because he feels cold. Ai talks to an unknown person on the phone and says she will go to the Twin Towers and "he" will join her as well. Somewhere else, at the same time, Gin and Vodka finish a phone call in their Porsche 356 A, though it isn't clear if they were talking to Ai. Gin says they are going to the Nishitamashi towers the following day.

In the afternoon, the Detective Boys and Agasa return to Tokyo. Genta complains that his seatbelt is a bit tight and Mitsuhiko replies that that isn't any surprise, after all Genta ate five bowls of rice at breakfast. To pass the time, Mitsuhiko suggests playing the 30 seconds-game. Players have to count down to 30 seconds without looking at a timer and whoever is closest, wins. Ai and Agasa sit the game out. Mitsuhiko goes first and gets 40 seconds, Conan does a bit better, stopping at 27 seconds, Genta gets all the way up to 59 seconds and Ayumi manages a perfect 30 seconds. Genta then asks Ai who she was talking to on the phone the previous night and Ai replies that he must have imagined that. They park in front of the towers, where, to their great surprise, Sonoko, Ran and Kogoro join them, having taken a taxi. Everyone decides to go to the towers together and Kogoro explains that he was invited by the owner of the building, his old college friend Mio Tokiwa. Chinami Sakaguchi, Mio's secretary, greets her guests in front of the towers and explains she is going to take them on a tour of the buildings. She says the Tokiwa Corporation uses all of the floors above the 31st floor and that she will first take them to the Tokiwa showroom on the 2nd and 3rd floor. Mitsuhiko tells Ayumi that Tokiwa specialises in software but deals with everything concerning computers. Yoshiaki Hara, an executive and programmer for Tokiwa, meets them in front of the showroom and presents his newest invention - a machine that can predict what someone will look like in ten years. Ayumi and Agasa try it out first. Agasa looks exactly the same but everyone is stunned by Ayumi's pretty appearance. Genta and Mitsuhiko try the machine out next and aren't sure what to make of their appearance as 17-year olds. Sonoko and Ran decide to give it a go. Sonoko is disappointed, declaring she looks old, but Ran, Kogoro - and quite obviously Conan, who tries to remain inconspicuous - are impressed by Ran's photo, Kogoro says she reminds him of Eri. Mitsuhiko and Ayumi wonder about Conan's strange reaction.

Conan and Ai refuse to participate for obvious reasons, fearing they will be exposed by the machine. Kogoro forces Conan to sit down and have his photo taken and Mitsuhiko and Genta pressure Ai to sit down as well. The machine takes a photo of them but then shows an error message, keeping Conan and Ai safe.

Sawaguchi's phone rings and she tells her guests to follow her to the 75th floor where everything is being prepared for the grand opening party of the towers. As they go to the elevator, Sawaguchi accidentally treads on Kogoro's toes and apologises, embarassed. Hara jokes it isn't a surprise that Sawaguchi is clumsy, she was born in the Chinese year of the Boar after all. Sawaguchi gets everyone into the VIP elevator which instantly accesses any floor of the building. She explains that the VIP elevator can only be entered on this floor and the 66th floor where there is a concert hall. Ayumi and Mitsuhiko admire the view as the elevator takes them up and say it feels like going straight to heaven. The reception room on the 75th floor is in a complete mess while everything is being set up for the party. Mio Tokiwa comes to join her guests as they get out of the elevator and introduces them to some other VIP guests: Hosui Kisaragi, a painter who specialises in the traditional Japanese ways of painting, Iwamatsu Oki, a council member in Nishitamashi who supported the building of the towers and Hidehiko Kazama, the architect who designed the buildings. Kazama explains that he studied under [[Teiji Moriya]], which instantly alarms Conan and Kogoro but Kazama assures them that he doesn't plan on blowing his creations up at all. Conan points out Moriya wouldn't have approved of the towers because they are assymetrical. Kazama says this was intentional. One side of the tower they are in right now offers a perfect view of Mount Fuji, on the other side you can see tower B which is a commercial building with a hotel on the top floors. The hotel has a rooftop pool with a retractable roof.

Oki, who is already quite drunk, asks Mio if he can't spend the night in the hotel and she arranges for him to stay in a suite on the 67th floor on tower B. Oki thanks her and says he wants to take her out for dinner, before noticing Mio's unusual brooch. She replies she got it as a gift. Kisaragi abruptly decides he has to leave. Kazama explains that the painter feels insulted by the way Mio treats his art. She buys his paintings and sells them for a profit without appreciating him as an artist. Hara hands chocolates to Ayumi, Genta and Mitsuhiko and invites them to his house to test a new game he created. He tells the Detective Boys to visit him the following Sunday. Ai decides to leave and Mitsuhiko approaches Ran in private and says he needs Ran's help. Ayumi also asks to speak to Ran in private. in the meantime, Sonoko still studies her photo when Ai walks past, wondering if she should get a perm. Two Tokiwa employees get out of the VIP elevator and discuss a "luxury car" that just parked in front of the towers. They say it is a Porsche 356A which alarms Conan immensely. He asks the employees to describe the car to him and is shocked when their descriptions match the car used by Gin. Conan hurries to the elevator and keeps an eye on the car as he goes down. The Porsche drives off as soon as he gets out of the building.

The next day Mitsuhiko meets up with Ran at a fast food restaurant and asks for Ran's help. He says he has a crush on Ayumi but it is obvious that Ayumi prefers Conan. He is also confused because he feels like he is developing feelings for Ai and wonders if he's a bad person for liking two girls. Ran says there is no need for him to be ashamed and that he should treasure those feelings but stay friends with both girls. Later, Ayumi meets Ran at a donut shop and confesses that she has a crush on Conan. She worries Conan has a crush on Ran as well. Ran doesn't believe that but Ayumi insists, saying she watched Conan and "female intuition" told her Conan has feelings for Ran. Ran is amused how serious the children take all of this. During same night, Ran calls Shinichi and they discuss Conan having feelings for her. Shinichi laughs Ran's suggestion off. Meanwhile, an intruder breaks into Oki's room in the hotel on the 67th floor of tower B, pulls out a knife, backs Oki into a corner and fatally stabs the politician with his knife before he escapes.

As they were among the last people to see Oki alive, Inspector Megure calls everyone to police headquarters to inform them of Oki's death and question their alibis. Chiba reports that Oki died between 10 o'clock and midnight and that they found a sake cup broken in half at the crime scene. Megure says he has two theories about the cup's meaning. Either it fell out of Oki's pocket or it was a message left by either the murderer or the victim. Shiratori says the police have five main subjects. Because the building isn't open to the public, only Tokiwa, Hara, Kisaragi, Sawaguchi and Kazama could have entered Oki's room and committed the crime. Kogoro puts a theory forward - "choko" (sake cup) could refer to "chocolate" and point to Hara who is known for loving chocolate. Megure informs Kogoro that Hara is the only one among the suspects who has an alibi. The police don't really have a valid motive yet but wonder if Oki's death had something to do with the towers themselves. Oki was an influential politician who made the city government give up their opposition to the building project.

Conan asks if the sake cup couldn't refer to Mio Tokiwa because her brooch looks like it. Kogoro angrily objects but Megure says she is actually the current main suspect since she was staying on the 68th floor of tower B, making her closest to the victim.
Sonoko says the sake cup reminds her of the bowl used to mix powder in traditional Japanese painting.
They realise it could point to almost every one of the subjects except Kazama and Sawaguchi. Conan tells the police officers that he heard Kazama studied under Teiji Moriya but Shiratori replies that that doesn't make him suspicious as Kazama is nowhere near as much a perfectionist as Moriya was. Megure adds that Sawaguchi maybe had a motive for killing Oki as well. Her father was an investigative journalist who was looking into Oki when he suddenly died from exhaustion. Sawaguchi was in her last year at university when she lost her father. However, there is no evidence that ties Oki to Mr. Sawaguchi's death.

Conan sneaks another look at the photo of the victim hidden in Megure's notebook and notices that blood is suspiciously missing from a place where it should be. Ai looks at the photo with him and says she has noticed the same. Conan quietly tells her he worries the sake cup could point to the Black Organization but Ai calms him, saying they would never leave such an obvious message.

Out of the corner of his eye, Conan sees Genta, Mitsuhiko and Ayumi having a quiet discussion and apparently agreeing on something. The three friends meet up at Beika Station to get ahead of Conan in their investigation, but Conan sneaks up on them, surprising them and makes them promise never to do anything this dangerous again, after all they could meet a murderer. Genta explains he asked Ai to join them - she declined, saying she had housework to do. Actually, Ai spends the afternoon by herself and watches a gangster movie in the cinema, which reminds her a lot of herself now she left the organization after her older sister's death, because there is a scene where a man betrayed the gang and was killed by them while escaping along with his beloved younger sister.

Mitsuhiko explains their plans to Conan. They are on their way to Kazama's house and plan to visit Hara the following day. Mitsuhiko says they also found out Kisaragi lives in a house he had built in Asahino, in walking distance from Kazama, and that he moved there three years ago.

Upon arrival at Asahino station, the Detective Boys first go to visit Kazama. Conan is impressed by the CAD system the architect uses to digitally design his buildings and models. Mitsuhiko starts questioning Kazama on Oki's death. He says he had no reason to be angry at the politician and was actually quite grateful for his support in the twin towers project and thanked Oki for it. Kazama also tells them about his son and that he has to call his family now. Conan realises Kazama can't be the murderer as he was completely relaxed around them.

Kisaragi is working on a painting of Mount Fuji when the Detective Boys knock on his door. He is originally furious with them for disturbing him in the middle of his work. Conan notices Kisaragi has the blinds drawn even though his house overlooks Mount Fuji perfectly. Kisaragi draws caricatures of all the Detective Boys, hands them to the kids with a grin and shoos them away.

That night, Professor Agasa wakes up from his own loud snoring. He gets up to have a glass of water and overhears Ai speaking to someone on the phone. The following morning, he calls Conan and says Genta told him something similar had happened during their recent camping trip. Agasa fears the organization has lured Ai back in, but Conan tells the professor to trust her. Conan puts the phone down and meets up with the rest of the Detective Boys to visit Hara. Hara's doors are not fully closed, making Conan instantly suspicious. He takes his shoes off, sneaks into the apartment and they find Hara dead on the floor of his living room.

Hara has a single wound in his chest that could come from a gunshot. Conan also spots a knife with chocolate cake remains on the floor next to Hara's body and another broken sake cup. The police arrive and Takagi wonders what the sake cup could mean. Shiratori says it is obvious that they're now dealing with a serial killer. Conan privately asks Investigator Tome from the Crime Scene Team about the cup and Tome points out that this one doesn't have any bloodstains on it, meaning it could have been placed at the scene after Hara's murder to draw attention away from the actual murderer. Shiratori and Megure update Kogoro on the newest developments and say Hara was likely killed between 5 and 6 at night a day ago. Someone apparently also wiped Hara's entire computer data. The remaining suspects are Tokiwa, Kazama; Sawaguchi and Kisaragi. Megure says he wanted to ask Tokiwa to postpone the opening party, but she refused, sending two ivnitations to the party to the police instead.

A black Porsche 356A parks in front of a block of flats and Gin steps out. He enters the building and meets with Vodka who is searching one of the apartments, previously belonging to Akemi Miyano. Gin says they could use Akemi's computer to run a call tracing program to find out where Sherry is and Vodka switches the computer on. At the same time, Ai gets up and calls Akemi's number, leaving a message about the party that will happen the following day. Gin's program is almost successful, but three seconds before it can reveal Sherry's current location to him and Vodka, the line is cut. Conan has secretly followed Ai and pulled the plug. He chastises her for being so reckless, reminding her that the organization already turned up at the Twin Towers. Ai runs back to her room in tears. Akemi's phone rings again shortly afterwards but the caller only uses it to remotely delete Ai's message.

The following morning, Ai explains herself to her friends at Teitan Elementary. She says she knows she is doing something dangerous, but she misses hearing her sister's voice and the only way she can do that is by calling Akemi's number and listening to her mailbox message. The Detective Boys comfort her and reassure her she isn't alone anymore, she has got all of them now.

Opening night at the Twin towers arrives. A metallic ball is rolled into the central surveillance room in the first level of the tower basements. The ball releases a gas that immediately knocks out the guards watching the CCTV screens. The culprit plants bombs in the main server room, near the entrance and on the rooftop of tower A.

At the same time, at Kogoro's Detective Agency, everyone meets up to go to the party but Sonoko is late. Conan and Ai quietly discuss the case and Conan asks Ai if Hara could be involved with the Black Organization. Ai says it might be possible, the Organization looks to recruit different sorts of specialists from all possible fields to work on its research projects.

Sonoko finally arrives, wearing her hair in a perm like Ai. Outside of the buildings, Takagi, Chiba, Megure and Shiratori stand guard, having had their entrance refused by Tokiwa, so all the police can do for now is watch the guests arriving for the party.

In the reception room, everyone immediately notices a shiny red Ford Mustang Convertible on a pedestal. The kids wonder how it was transported to the 75th floor as the car is too big to fit into the regular elevator, but Ayumi notices there is another elevator for cargo that was used to bring the car upstairs.

The guests enjoy a beautiful view of the sunset from the high windows and Mio Tokiwa walks on stage. She announces the guests will now be able to join a game she herself learned from her father, the "30 seconds- game". Participants will have to guess when 30 seconds have passed without using their watches or phones. Whoever comes closest will win the Mustang. If there is a tie, the winner will be decided by rock-paper-scissors and the loser receives a mountain bike with a helmet. Mio's assistant collects everyone's watches except for Conan's and Ai's. Before the game officially begins, Conan notices that Kisaragi didn't participate either.

Mio starts the stopwatch and, to everyone's immense surprise, Kogoro wins the game.

Sawaguchi calls up several guests of honour who helped build the Twin Towers to the stage before the lights are switched off for a special presentation. On a screen in front of the stage, the guests see a variety of paintings made by Hosui Kisaragi as an announcer talks about his artistic career, saying they will now officially present his latest masterpiece.

The spotlights are turned on, revealing a massive painting of Mount Fuji and Mio Tokiwa's body dangles from a wire in front of the painting. She was hanged.

Kogoro brings her body down to do a first inspection and notices a sake cup on the floor next to Mio's corpse. This one, however, is unbroken.
They draw the curtains and Kogoro calls Megure and his officers to join him at the scene of the crime. They notice Mio's body was attached to a hook tied to the ceiling with piano wire, so she choked to death when the painting lowered and the wire was being pulled upwards. They decide to recreate the moment the murder was committed, instructing all suspects to stand where they stood when the lights went out.
Kogoro accuses Kisaragi of committing the murder as he stood next to Mio, saying his motive was to prevent Mio from making a profit with his paintings. Takagi interjects, saying Kisaragi had no idea about the sake cups being left at the other crime scenes.
Kogoro now declares it has to have been Sawaguchi, accusing her of being as ambitious as her father and of continuing her father's investigation into Oki's wrongdoings. Sawaguchi's father believed Oki was being bribed by Tokiwa to allow the building of the Twin Towers to continue. Sawaguchi asks Kogoro if he has any proof and he comes up with an outlandish theory. He says "choko" (sake cup) is spelled with the kanji for boar and kuchi and is a hint at Sawaguchi, who was born in the year of the boar.
Conan wants to interrupt but Ai motions him over, saying she has an idea about the way the murder was committed. Ai says Mio couldn't have noticed someone attached a piano wire to her Pearl necklace as she had been drinking and this is how she was lured to her death. Conan has a look and finds a lone pearl next to the place Kisaragi stood in. He quickly gets the elevator to the ground level to confirm his suspicion for Kisaragi's motive.

Suddenly, at the 4th basement level, one of the bombs planted by the culprit explodes in the power generator room and all the lights in A tower go out. The second bomb detonates in the Server room and eradicates all data on the servers belonging to the Tokiwa corporation, setting off a giant fire in the process.

Sawaguchi remembers that the VIP elevators are still working as they run on an independent power source. All women and children are instructed to escape by the elevators which directly lead out of A tower and Megure instructs the men to use the emergency stairs, cross over the Sky Bridge and run down tower B. Firefighters arrive and formulate a plan to put the fires out. The evacuation begins.

Conan almost fits in the elevator but the weight sensors go off, making him wait for the next one. The elevator stops on the 66th floor and the Detective Boys get out as well, leaving their place to a frightened young woman and her baby, but leaving them stuck in the building as well. Conan realises the way the bombs were planted directly points to the Organization, it was too precise to be committed to an ordinary criminal.

The elevator finally returns to the 75th floor and Conan, Ran and Sonoko step in. On the way down, Conan suddenly realises that the Organization think Ai, or rather Shiho Miyano, is at the party as well and that they now mistake Sonoko for her thanks to her new hairstyle. He zooms in to the roof of B tower, using his glasses and spots Gin who has a sniper pointing his rifle directly at Sonoko.

Conan tricks Sonoko into moving out of the way and Gin, who observes them from the roof, realises that this can't be Shiho, as Sonoko behaves rather strangely when a bullet hits the elevator next to her.
The elevator gets stuck.

Conan uses the elevator hatch to escape and Ran opens the door to the 45th floor. With flames making their way upwards, Conan hurries everyone across to the second Sky Bridge.

Gin and Vodka lock their scope lenses onto the second Bridge, believing Sherry must be escaping with the men. When they don't see her, they decide to blow up both bridges in the 60th and 45th floors, leaving Sherry trapped in tower A. Just as the Detective Boys want to hurry across the bridge in the 60th floor, it is blown up by Vodka, sending it crashing into the bridge on the 45th floor, trapping Conan and Ran as well. Smoke starts billowing into the room and Conan and Ran start to feel nauseous. Ran quickly thinks of a way to escape, breaks the glass hatch next to her, grabs a fire hose behind the hatch, ties it around Conan and herself and jumps off the building, using the force to break another glass window just as the hose starts to burn.

Conan and Ran reach the police downstairs but Conan can't see the Detective Boys. At exactly that moment, Genta contacts him with his badge, telling him they are still stuck on the 60th floor. Megure calls for a helicopter to rescue the kids. Conan sneaks across to Agasa's car to grab his skateboard, takes the elevator up to the 60th floor of B tower and jumps across the remains of the Sky Bridge to A tower, helping the Detective Boys escape to the roof before he goes back to the 75th floor to confront the serial killer.

<spoiler>After everyone has evacuated from floor 75th, Conan and Ai confront the culprit who has yet to evacuate from the party room: '''Hosui Kisaragi'''.

* Kisaragi send an expensive pearl necklace to President Mio, which she wore at the party. At the backstage prior to the murder, he hooked a wire from the top of his painting of Mount Fuji along the top of the curtain and tied it to an identical necklace. Shortly before his painting would be displayed, he silently approched Mio and removed the necklace from her neck. After calming her down, he pretended to pick it the necklace up and put the second necklace on her instead. With his trap in place, all he had to do was wait for the painting to be lowered down, choking Mio to death. Kisaragi left a sake cup on the stage to frame the serial killer for it.

* During the first murder, Kisaragi visited Oki by presenting him a painting as a gift, lowering Oki's guard. After Oki was murdered, he removed the painting which was hung on the wardrobe door from the crime scene, creating a strange shape of bloodstains.

* However, Kisaragi wasn't the one who killed Hara, as Hara was already murdered by the time that he arrived at the latter's house. Instead, he used the broken cup that he had prepared to make it appears that the murderer of both Oki and Hara was the same person, and removing himself from the suspect list as his alibi during the second murder was verified by the Detective Boys.

* The evidence that proves Kisaragi's crime is hidden in his cane: the '''first necklace''' that Mio wore. Conan noticed strange sound coming from the can after the murder, meaning that Kisaragi had hidden something inside it.

=== Motive ===
Kisaragi concedes and confesses: he committed all three murders for the sake of Mount Fuji. For ten years, he always climbed a hill just outside of Nishitama City to paint the mountain. When old age caught up with him, he built a house on top of the hill to keep enjoying his favourite perspective of Mount Fuji when he painted, a view that was ruined by the Twin Towers which split the mountain in half, thus he murdered Mio and planned to murder Hara in vengeance for their involvement in constructing the towers, and Oki for approving the towers' construction plan. The broken sake cup was a reference to his now spoiled view of Mount Fuji. He left an unbroken sake cup at the third crime scene because the serial cases had already ended, and that Mio's body provided the same symbolism as she was hung in front of his painting, dividing the mountain the same way.

With all of his crimes exposed, Kisaragi tries to commit suicide by poison, which he originally intended to do so after he had succeeded in his goal, but is tranquilized by Conan with his watch, stating that as a detective he cannot allow Kisaragi to commit suicide as he must pay for his own sin.

=== Aftermath ===
Ai, who listened to Conan's deduction, asks when Conan became suspicious of Kisaragi. Conan says he noticed the Twin Towers seemingly splitting Mount Fujii in two when they got out of Asahino Station and that he wondered why Kisaragi had his blinds drawn even though his house supposedly offered a perfect view of the mountain.

He also explains that he knows who actually killed Hara. Hara grabbed his silver knife to leave a dying message - silver in Japanese means "GIN". Gin didn't suspect this, thinking Hara wanted to defend himself with the knife. Conan says Hara must have hacked into the Black Organization's computers, which explains why his entire hard drive was erased.

Conan goes upstairs and Ai remains in the room, noticing a glowing red light behind the bar that she thinks has to come from a bomb. Just as Conan reaches the roof, Vodka remotely activates a bomb making it impossible for the rescue helicopter to land, so Conan quickly helps the Detective Boys down to the reception room again.

Ai shows a horrified Conan that she found a bomb under every table in the reception room. Conan frantically looks around and spots the dome on the roof of B tower, remembering that it is retractable. He thinks they can bridge the distance between both towers with the Mustang which remained in the room. Ai challenges Conan's assumption, saying the distance is 50 metres and they would need a minimum of 60 metres to successfully land on B tower. With the height difference taken into account, it will take only 2 seconds for the car to hit the tower and they would need a speed of 108 km/h. Conan explains he wants to use the explosion as an accelerant.

This plan, however, needs absolutely precise timing and Conan's watch battery just died. They remember how good Ayumi was at the 30 seconds game so they tell her to help everyone and tell Conan to start the car on time. Ai decides she will also count down to 30 to help Ayumi and remains sitting on one of the tables. Conan calls Megure and asks for the roof of B tower to be opened.

They load an unconscious Kisaragi into the car and start the countdown a minute before the bombs are due to explode. As 30 seconds approach, Ai doesn't want to make any move so Genta jumps out of the car, hauls her over his shoulder and runs back into the car with Ai with five seconds remaining.

Conan hits the accelerator, the bombs detonate and the car flies through the air. Ai almost falls out but Mitsuhiko saves her. Conan suddenly notices a glass sculpture inside the pool on tower B, realising how dangerous this could be for Ai so he kicks Ayumi's helmet (which she had won for coming second in the 30 seconds game at the party) into the sculpture, breaking it and saving Ai.

The car safely lands in the pool. Ayumi explains that she always gets excited when Conan is near her so she can count her heartbeat to help guessing how many seconds have passed.

Vodka is informed that five children and an old man have escaped with the car and finally realises Sherry was nowhere near the towers.
Gin says he doesn't care, their main objective has been fulfilled - the servers used by Tokiwa are destroyed.

The police arrest Kisaragi.

Suddenly, a horrified Kogoro realises that his brand new car is now swimming in the pool, completely submerged.</spoiler>

Renya Karasuma was a wealthy and influential multi-millionaire who was the most powerful person in all of modern Japan, with an extensive range of contacts all over in the world. He is richer than the [[Suzuki family|Suzuki plutocrats]] in Tokyo and the [[Ooka family]] in Kyoto.<ref>Detective Conan SDB Black Plus (2018).</ref> He is said to have died at over 100 years old about fourty years ago, under quite mysterious circumstances and his legacy is unknown. During his lifetime, he had collected over three hundred pieces of priceless art and antiques. About sixty-seven years ago, as a guest at his birthday party, he met [[Amanda Hughes]], an American VIP.

When his mother died, he inherited the [[Sunset Manor]], a huge western-style manor house, and over time filled his vacation home with his silver crest which depicts a rolled-up [[crow]]. Forty years ago, he found a clue leading to a vast fortune left by his mother supposedly hidden in the manor, but he was unable to solve it himself. Consumed by his own greed for the treasure, he hired people to solve the riddle for him and then began killing them as motivation for the others to work faster. After his supposed death, the [[Karasuma family]] died out and the house fell into other hands.

He founded the shady [[Karasuma Group]], a big company in Tokyo that pays well as a sponsor but is associated with various bad rumors. He is the man at the center of it all, directing illegal activities and planning crimes to protect and advance the interests of those [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] calls the "[[Black Organization]]". While mysteriously operating behind the scenes, the boss communicates with his ruthless subordinates only through text messages. His phone number, encoded as the famous children's song [[Nanatsu no Ko]], is #969#6261. He is responsible for promoting agents deemed worthy and deciding on their alcoholic codenames, but he does not have one of his own because he is the big boss and does not need a codename. However, he does not want anyone in the organization to know about his current location.

He is described as a greedy, corrupt, cruel, and impatient man. He is materialistic as driven by his own greed while searching for the hidden treasure inside the Sunset Manor. Furthermore, he doesn't value human life, as brutally killed numerous innocent people that he invited just as motivation to find the treasure faster. Wise and quiet, intelligent and manipulative, he is ruthless, willing to dispatch senior agents who have been extremely loyal to him for many years for a single mistake. [[Vermouth]] says that he is always careful to the extreme, the type to ruin the plan by overthinking it. Somehow, he can maintain loyalty and unity within the organization, despite many members disliking or even outright wishing to murder certain others. The [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] believed he was hoping to nip a potential obstacle in the bud, because a politician hard on crime and not part of the Diet yet may have a chance of becoming the next Prime Minister. He thought [[Shuichi Akai|Akai]] could become a [[silver bullet]], someone who is especially dangerous to the entire organization. Unless he brought Conan back alive, [[Irish]] thought his true identity is something the boss would find hard to believe.

He is bald on the top of his head with the rest of his hair extended to the neck, with a large nose shaped like a beak, and a somewhat obese body shape. His eyes are drooping. He dressed in black with a white scarf, held his left arm behind the back and a walking stick with a ball handle on his right hand with long nails like a bird's leg, and on his left shoulder there is a pet crow, the creepy bird which is also depicted on his crest. ==== Rum ====
[[Rum]] is the second-in-command in the organization, meaning that Karasuma must trust him the most, enough to make him the new highest ranking executive agent after his late father's long service. Rum has his support to do criminal activities, such as blackmailing big names in the political and financial world in order to strengthen their position. About forty-seven years ago, Rum appeared at the International Economic Forum's annual general meeting on behalf of him, who was absent due to poor health. However, Rum is scolded by the boss when his conspicuous actions can threaten the secrecy of the organization, for example by burning an island, instead of searching closely, to lure out their target. Even Rum has not seen him in a long time and has been trying to find out about his whereabouts.

==== Gin ====
He trusts [[Gin]] enough to make him the chief administrator in the organization, and for good reason: Gin is among the most loyal of the high-ranking members. Gin follows the boss' orders closely and virtually never acts against the organization's greater interests, and in return the boss entrusts Gin to direct critical missions and key assassinations. The boss often issues orders to Gin directly by text message for him to disseminate to the others, and the two are implied to contact each other fairly often about instructions and suspicions. He needs Gin to do the more criminal works, as other men are prevented from acting to that extent. Although Gin follows all orders from the boss, he acts on his own initiative on more than one occasion, as deciding to poison Shinichi with the recently approved [[APTX 4869]] or to kill Vermouth if she does anything weird even if she is his favorite. For this reason, the FBI thought Gin would be able to lead them to the boss if they captured him.

==== Vodka ====
[[Vodka]] is the managerial secretary in the organization. He is scared of consequence to act without the boss' permission, for example by killing Vermouth during a spy mission, but of course Gin takes full responsibility for his partner in the general oversight division.

==== Vermouth ====
[[Vermouth]] is known as Karasuma's favorite member by the other members although the reason for the favoritism is unknown, to the point of giving her limited independence and protecting her from other members who hate, mistrust, and wish to kill her. Bourbon reveals that there is some sort of connection between Vermouth and the boss, implying that her relationship with the boss goes further than merely being his favorite member. Bourbon also notes that he has arranged for her secret to be revealed to the whole organization in case something happens to him, and points out that the other members would be quite surprised if they knew the nature of the relationship. However, even then, he still willingly sends her into deadly missions. He has also unintentionally allowed Chris Vineyard to undermine the organization by protecting Conan, someone she thinks is especially dangerous. During a Halloween party, he discovered that Vermouth was up to something without the organization's knowledge, so he ordered Gin and Vodka to investigate. Aboard the ship, a man that Vermouth blackmailed to murder a director began screaming someone called Vermouth was to blame. Later on, he sends a text message to Vermouth's cellphone: "It looks like I have given you too much freedom. Come back to my side, Vermouth." Conan tried to force Vermouth to surrender and take him to find the boss, but failed. [[Jodie Starling|Jodie]] hopes to capture Vermouth, who could lead the FBI to the elusive boss.

==== Chianti ====
[[Chianti]] is scared of him even more than she proves to be scared of Gin and must work with Vermouth due to direct orders from the boss. In order to avenge [[Calvados]]' death, she would've killed Vermouth a long time ago, if she wasn't his favorite, but swears she'll definitely kill her in the end. She also proves to be envious for what Kir has used to make him let her join their group four years ago, but she and Kir have a cordial relation.

==== Kir ====
He promoted [[Kir]] because she had uncovered a spy and confronted him. The spy, [[Ethan Hondou]], overpowered and tortured her for information, but [[Rena Mizunashi]] remained silent. Although completely crippled, Rena bit Ethan's wrist to force him to drop his gun, and then killed him. The bite marks and Ethan's recording device corroborated her story, so he promoted her to the codename Kir in recognition of her loyalty and sheer savagery. In truth, he was fooled. Ethan was Kir's father and they both are [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] spies infiltrating the organization. Hidemi Hondou had made a mistake and was about to be uncovered as a spy. Ethan, who had prepared appropriately ahead of time in case this happened, told Rena to tell the organization she discovered he was a spy and tried to confront him. Ethan then committed suicide after maiming himself and his daughter to prove that the story was true. He orders Kir to assassinate a politician while holding an interview. However, his assassinate plot was averted by the combined efforts of the FBI and Conan. The injured Kir was then captured by the FBI and was hospitalized in Haido Central Hospital for weeks. After the organization easily retrieved Kir from the FBI, Gin became suspicious of how ineffective the FBI's plan was and that Akai did not make a strong move. Gin thought that Akai is hiding something and relays his doubt to him, who also agrees. He and Gin plan a test of Kir's loyalty. Hearing about [[Andre Camel|Camel]] became a suspect in a coincidental murder case, the organization takes advantage of the FBI's distraction, so Gin calls out Kir and tells her his order. In order to regain his trust, she is to call Akai out to meet with her and kill him. Kir meets with Akai at Raiha Pass and apparently kills him. However, he was fooled again. Conan, Akai, and Kir conspired to fake that death.

==== Bourbon ====
[[Bourbon]] is dispatched to search for the escaped scientist Sherry. However, Tooru Amuro received his permission to execute a second, secret mission: verified Akai's death by disguising himself as him and approaching his FBI colleagues. In truth, with the indirect support of the [[National Police Agency]], Rei Furuya has been persevering to turn in Akai to the organization to earn higher ranks to get closer to the boss. Moreover, Bourbon is one of the few people who know his secret relationship with Vermouth.

==== Sherry ====
He orders the execution of [[Shiho Miyano]] after she boycotted the development of APTX 4869 and rebelled against the organization. Naturally, when Sherry manages to escape before she could be even executed, he ordered the organization to hunt the traitor down and murder her, and to get rid of anyone associated with her. Conan later uncovers his phone number, but [[Ai Haibara]] warns him of the danger of calling it, likening it to Pandora's Box for his safety. Of course she knows all this from the start, the email address and the unbelievable person behind it, but this important secret is extremely dangerous, so Haibara has been hiding his true identity because she fears Conan will make a rash move and get himself killed.

==== Miyano family ====
Twenty-five years ago, he wanted to buy the [[Shirohato Pharmaceuticals‎‎|pharmaceutical company]] where [[Atsushi Miyano]] worked as part of a drug development team, but it went badly and that company was suddenly shut down. During the time Atsushi and his wife [[Elena Miyano|Elena]] were running their private clinic, they received invitations from him many times, but Atsushi had always refused his offer, considering the strange rumors surrounding that organization, discovered by his sister-in-law, [[Mary Sera|Mary]]. However, nineteen years ago they went to his group's lab after all, so he sponsored their research to make APTX 4869.

==== Pisco ====
[[Pisco]] is a big auto manufacturer chairman who had served under him for many years. He trusted Kenzo Masuyama enough to make him an executive agent of the organization. Gin relayed his orders to Pisco: silence a politician, who was going to be arrested for bribery, and use APTX 4869 if it was necessary. This conversation revealed his existence to Conan, which he had suspected from the beginning. Pisco successfully assassinated the target, but he was accidentally caught on a flash photo in the act of murder, showing him holding his gun in the newspaper. Then, fearing that Pisco may expose the existence and goals of the organization to the public, he ordered Gin to kill him and burn his house to the ground, which the latter does even though Pisco knew where Sherry was.

==== Rikumichi Kusuda ====
For assurance, [[Rikumichi Kusuda]] is sent to Haido Central Hospital to act as a patient while searching for Kir, who is currently held captive by the FBI. Kusuda continues to write to his e-mail address every day, until he was cornered by Akai and killed himself.

==== Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa ====
[[Shinichi Kudo]], the high school student and world's greatest detective, currently shrank into a little kid, [[Conan Edogawa]], due to Gin and is the arch-enemy of Karasuma's criminal organization. From the beginning, as responsible for shrinking his body with their pill, Conan must manage to reach their mastermind and catch the organization in one fell swoop, all for the sake of returning to his original form. He is indirectly responsible for Shinichi's whole current life-threatening situation. An extremely dangerous man, far worse than everyone else in the organization, he is a diabolical presence that chilled the boy to the bone, which no other man in black or minor criminal can do. In fact, despite the two never actually confronting each other in person, every time he sees someone on a cell phone or sing Nanatsu no Ko, Conan gets flashbacks to Vermouth, from whom he got a vital clue, the email address that could lead him to the name and whereabouts of the supreme commander who controls them, and suddenly he looks pale and frightened. From now on, until his mission comes to a close, anyone associated with Conan, his parents or friends, is in a do-or-die situation.

==== Shuichi Akai ====
Capturing a high-ranking member of the organization who could lead the FBI to the boss was the goal of [[Shuichi Akai]]'s spy mission. After three years of infiltration, he gave the undercover FBI agent Dai Moroboshi the codename "Rye" and ordered him to work under Gin. The FBI's plan to capture Gin fell apart when Akai's true allegiance was uncovered by Rum due to a mistake made by Camel. In the two years since the mission failure, he came to believe Akai could become the organization's silver bullet, the threat whom he fears the most, and is more like Vermouth than Gin.

== Name origin ==
"Karasuma" literally means "crow circle", as the logo in his crest. It is a very unusual surname and most known for being a [[wikipedia:Karasuma Street|street]] (and its associated [[wikipedia:Karasuma Station|station]] and [[wikipedia:Karasuma Line|train line]]) in Kyoto. It can also be translated "[[wikipedia:ja:烏丸家|Karasumaru]]", one of the old court nobles, or "Ugan", another name for the [[Wikipedia: Wuhuan|Wuhuan]].

"Renya" is a name also used for women, written with the kanji for "lotus" and "father".

== Character inspiration ==
[[Gosho Aoyama]] was inspired by the fictional character [[Wikipedia: Professor Moriarty|James Moriarty]], the main antagonist in the ''[[Sherlock Holmes]]''' series, to create the Black Organization's head.<ref>Aoyama's latest interview for NHK (2017).</ref> Just like the "Napoleon of Crime", he doesn't show his face and works as a shadow behind the scenes, only pulling the strings on the crimes from far away, sort of like Al Capone did.<ref>Interview with Aoyama Gosho March 2014.</ref> He is depicted as a cold-blooded person who controls underworld and doesn't leave a single scrap of evidence, remaining anonymous to the public, and the shape similar to Professor Moriarty's in the novels.

Conan has had to use Sonoko sometimes when he needs to do a deduction show. == Appearance ==
When not in the Teitan High School uniform, Sonoko often wears a bandanna holding back her fringe, a skirt, and a cute shirt. Her clothes often show more skin compared to Ran, mostly for the purpose of attracting guys. In [[Countdown to Heaven]], she temporarily changes her hairstyle to a perm.

Conan and Ran visit Sonoko's mountain villa to see the autumn leaves and meet up with some old friends. On the way to the front they see a strange bandaged man in a dark cloak crossing the bridge. When they see him turn around, they are shocked at his face, as he quickly makes a retreat around the side of the house. Everything seems fine as Ran tries to find her room, accidentally walking in on the men also staying the house. When everyone is asked about the bandaged man he is brushed off as possibly a crazy man with nothing better to do. However, he is taken far more seriously when Ran is attacked in the woods, but the attacker is scared off by Conan, and later one of the women is seen being carried off by him from the windows. Conan and the other men chase him and find her dismembered body in the woods.

Everyone decides that it is best to go to bed for the night, when he strikes again, this time trying to kill Ran in her sleep. Conan saves Ran by waking her up to defend herself, but when the bandaged man retreats Conan wonders why Ran is a target. Everyone decides to stay up for the night and keep together to throw off the murderous man. Conan suspects that Ran saw something that made her a target, and the culprit is one of the people staying there. Despite having solved the case, Conan cannot present the solution, since his usual mouthpiece Kogoro isn't there to be put to sleep. So, he decides to solve the case through Ran. When he shoots the anaesthetic needle, however, Sonoko ends up in the way and she falls asleep. Left with no choice, Conan reveals the killer via Sonoko. While Sonoko doesn't remember making the deductions, she is very proud at having "solved" the case.

At the end of the case, Conan asks the person that she was meeting is Shiro Wakaoji, a young man (and a client of the coffee shop where the murder took place) plans to take advantage of a "naive" teenage girl he met while skiing, despite his already having a girlfriend. She says no, but Shiro tries to flirt with her just before Sonoko announces her presence — Sonoko is his intended date. Conan, knowing that Wakaoji only wants to toy with Sonoko, repeats what Wakaoji said in the coffee shop, pretending that he does not understand it and needs explanation. Sonoko hears Conan's revelations about Wakaoji's true intentions, slaps Wakaoji and storms away.

Sonoko, Ran and Conan go to Izu (a popular holiday destination in Shizuoka Prefecture known for its beautiful beaches) and Sonoko wishes to find a boyfriend there. At the beach, Sonoko takes a picture of Ran fixing her bathing suit and jokes about sending the picture to Shinichi (since she likes teasing Ran and Shinichi about being an "old married couple"). Sonoko also laments about her lack of a love life, but immediately after, a college student called Tadahiko Michiwaki, asks her out to lunch. Ecstatic at the romantic attention, she agrees to lunch and then to dinner as well. However, due to nervousness, she asks Ran and Conan come along. During the meal, Michiwaki tells Sonoko and company that young brunette girls (like her) have been found murdered in the woods not far from the restaurant, once a year ago and once much more recently, but he offers to keep Sonoko safe.

The night arrives. When Sonoko enters her hotel room, she sees a suspicious figure searching her belongings. The figure attacks her, and she bites that person in self-defence before he escapes. The stoic and somewhat unfriendly high school student, [[Makoto Kyogoku]], who is working at the ''ryokan'' moves the group to another room. Ran thinks she has seen him somewhere before but cannot remember where. Michiwaki arrives muddy and wet and Conan suspects him of attacking Sonoko, but he does not have a bite mark on his arm. Makoto has a bandaged bicep and falls under suspicion but Sonoko says he wasn't the attacker because the attacker was hairy. Michiwaki, Sonoko, Ran, and Conan decide to have dinner at the ''ryokan'' because Michiwaki says that his car has broken down. Conan speculates that Sonoko's attacker was looking for the photographs she was taking during the trip, but cannot figure out why. Conan does not think there are any incriminating photos, but perhaps the murderer overheard Sonoko talking about the photographs (about sending them to Shinichi) and misunderstood.

The next day, Michiwaki, Ran and Conan go to eat at a restaurant while Sonoko tries to have a light sleep in the car. Suddenly, the car starts rolling towards the nearby cliff edge, and Sonoko barely escapes with her life. However, there is no evidence pointing towards the culprit. Ran and Conan go to report the incident while Michiwaki keeps Sonoko company. When alone on a walk in the forest, Michiwaki reveals that he is the serial killer and Sonoko is his target. He had the mistaken notion that Sonoko took a picture of him with his lastest victim and wants to get rid of both the picture and Sonoko a witness. Before he can hurt her, Makoto appears and saves her with an impressive martial arts display. Ran realizes that Makoto is a martial arts champion she has seen in competitions before. Makoto confesses awkwardly that he loves Sonoko, to Sonoko's surprise and delight. Though Makoto is often travelling for tournaments, he and Sonoko maintain a long-distance relationship.

Sonoko, Ran, and Conan are at the arcade taking sticker photos, which Ran realizes Sonoko suggested because Sonoko wants to put a sticker with her face on a letter to Makoto. Sonoko blushes but doesn't deny it. Soon after, they encounter their High School English teacher, Jodie Saintemillion, who is an avid gamer. Jodie introduces Ran to a virtual reality fighting game which uses mechanics to simulate a real fight. Ran loses to a gamer named Kengo Bito who taunts her for losing before going on to fight against his rival, Takayasu Shimizu. The battle is projected on a large screen, showing Bito's avatar overwhelming Shimizu's until just before the final blow. At the strange behavior, spectators check on Bito and discover that he is dead.

The police investigate and after reviewing the security camera's footage, they limit the suspects down to four people. When Conan deduces the culprit, he uses Sonoko again as he mouthpiece to expose the murderer. On the way home, Jodie says that Sonoko was like Kate Martin, and Ran says Sonoko was just like Shinichi. Ran and Sonoko part with Jodie on good terms.

Ran and Sonoko shop for a sweater that Sonoko wants to buy for Makoto; Ran scold Sonoko when she realizes Sonoko wants to pass the sweater off as hand-knitted by her. Ran sends Sonoko ahead to join Kogoro and Conan at a pasta shop, where they had coincidentally encountered the police investigating serial attacks on Japanese women following the "ganguro" fashion with darkly tanned skin, bleached hair, turtlenecks, miniskirts and high platform boots. Ran gets turned around and ends up in the parking lot, where she discovers a fourth victim, dead.

During the investigation, Sonoko and Ran point out that the victims are wearing a jacket that wasn't theirs, and Conan realizes the victims were attacked just after leaving somewhere warm—their cars. Sonoko leaves to put her shopping in the car and then use the toilet, attracting the attention of someone in the crowd. It turns out the culprit blames the victim wearing platform shoes while driving on the death of his son, and he is attacking any woman who drives with platform shoes. Sonoko is wearing platform shoes, and when she leaves the department store toilet the culprit is waiting to attack her. Sonoko screams and runs away, but manages to knock off the hat and scarf hiding his face, leaving him determined to kill her so she can't identify him. As Sonoko runs, her ankle twists under her and she falls. When the murderer attacks her, however, Inspector Megure arrives in the nick of time to protect her and confront the culprit. Megure was injured while protecting Sonoko, and at the hospital, Superintendent Matsumoto tells Ran and Sonoko the story of a girl Megure knew who impersonated a serial killer's victims and was gravely injured. Sonoko and Ran are moved to tears, thinking that the girl died, but it turns out that she survived and is now Megure's wife.

Sonoko shows off to Ran what she made in pottery class: a small cup for herself with Makoto's name on it and a large cup for Makoto with her name on it. Sonoko believe that doing this will have Makoto think of her every time he drinks from it, and in this way he will not forget her and fall in love with another girl. She invites Ran to join the pottery class as well, and Ran thinks of Shinichi and accepts. As Ran works on her project, Sonoko tries to take a sneak peek of what Ran is writing on the cup, but Ran does not let her, and after Sonoko ignores her warnings repeatedly Ran threatens to end their friendship if she ever catches Sonoko in the act. A murder then happens and Conan tranquillizes Sonoko to reveal the truth.

A few days later, Sonoko shows Ran a picture that Makoto has sent her; to her embarrassment, Makoto mistook her cup for a flower pot, and the picture depicts the cup with flowers planted in it.

[[Kogoro Mouri]] receives an invitation to a Halloween cruise; the Halloween cruise is famous for hiring guests to star in a horror film. Sonoko lends her makeup skills to turn Kogoro into a vampire. Because Ran hates horror-themed things, Sonoko ends up going to party as Kogoro's guest, dressed as a witch. During the cruise, the party members are divided into groups; team "Devil" consists of Kogoro, Sonoko, and people disguised as a werewolf, a mummy, a medusa and an invisible man. During the party, the host is murdered by a crossbow arrow with a card identifying team devil attached. Sonoko investigates with Kogoro and both suspect the mummy, who has no card, but later it is revealed to have been a trick. Sonoko is shocked when the invisible man turns out to be Shinichi, who solves the case, although he is later revealed to have actually been [[Heiji Hattori]] in disguise.

Later, the three also talk about Ran's role in that case and why Jodie has photos of Ran and various others behind her bathroom mirror.

Inspired by a romantic TV series, Sonoko heads to a maple forest in Gunma and plans to lure Makoto there for a romantic rendezvous, but this turns out to be unrealistic. Later, Sonoko and company get involved in a murder case and find themselves in a situation where they have to fend off several dozens of gangsters simultaneously. They are soon overwhelmed, and Sonoko desperately shouts for Makoto's help, and he actually comes shortly after (although he is supposed to be abroad and competing in an important karate tournament) and saves her from harm. After solving the case, on their way home, Makoto says that he was preparing for the tournament, but came back to Japan without hesitation after understanding the allusion of Sonoko's message to the TV series. However, since he was not able to figure out when the rendezvous was supposed to be, he set up a tent in the forest and planned to wait until Sonoko appears. Upon hearing Makoto's dedication to her and the sacrifice that he has made, Sonoko becomes very delighted.

Makoto eventually passes the test and is able to guard the diamond. Sonoko is initially delighted, but becomes slightly disappointed when Makoto admits that he noticed that Sonoko was being impersonated by Kid only because the impostor's ring fingers were longer than the index fingers, and in Sonoko the opposite is true.

She finds the building where the flowerbed was but the occupants don't seem to be the culprit since they tell she couldn't have seen their building from her place but they suggest her to visit the building behind where a similar flowerbed is and where she could have seen it. Mysteriously, the couple's lady (the husband was on business trip) is seemingly missing and a few objects are left on the rooftop flowerbed. The case goes more and more mysterious as the occupant of the previous house, Hiroto Sasaki, always gets irritated as she mentions that there should have been a murder. On her way home, she finds the truth (and Conan too at the same time) and go meet with the culprit who attacks her. Luckily, she is saved by Ran and Conan who just came at the right time. She then thinks of starting a career as a high-school detective.

Chianti is a [[Black Organization]] sniper, assigned in the assassination division. She is skilled with rifles, and [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] explains that she and Korn are excellent snipers. However, she is not quite a match for [[Shuichi Akai|Akai]]: he is indeed able to fire precisely even at 700 yards or more to 1300 yards, whereas her maximal fire range is 600 yards. Her partner is [[Korn]], and the two are often seen together on missions, just as [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] are usually seen together. It is implied that she had some sort of relationship with the deceased member, [[Calvados]], whose death she blames [[Vermouth]] for.

She usually dresses in black leather suits with a collar. Her left eyelid bears the tattoo of a swallowtail butterfly's wing.

== Personality ==
Chianti is a ruthless assassin who enjoys killing. Quite surprisingly for a sniper, she is impatient, even refusing to stop her car when asked by a construction worker. Gin has once cautioned her not to shoot at innocent targets out of boredom, after Chianti was complaining about not having had yet the chance to open fire during her mission. She is, however, capable of patience and of maintaining her concentration during stakeouts.

She uses harsh, rude and abusive language. She is scared of the [[The Boss|boss]] even more than she proves to be scared of Gin, and proves to be envious for what [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] has used to make the boss let her join their group four years ago. However, she and Kir have a cordial relation.

She is loyal to the Black Organization and, despite her short temper, respects Gin's authority and her own partner Korn. She however despises Vermouth, for she is responsible for the death of Chianti's late partner [[Calvados]], and has openly stated that she would like to eliminate Vermouth herself.

She is skilled at sniping shown when she and Korn were able to kill someone at practice with their sniping rifle, but she is no match for Akai, because she can only shoot to 600 yards while Akai can shoot until 700 yards or more to 1300 yard. Gin is a high-ranking "executive agent", often giving the other members their orders and supervising group missions. When on missions, he is typically the one giving orders, even to agents who are equally ranked, like Vermouth. Gin seems to be able to communicate freely with the [[The Boss|boss]].

Virtually nothing of Gin's history before the present timeline is known. From the FBI's discussion, he was in a high ranking position, perhaps the same one, two years ago, and his appearance has not changed between then and the current timeline.

Two years ago, FBI agent [[Shuichi Akai]], who was on a infiltration mission, was promoted to the codename Rye. He was called to work under Gin and a meeting for them was set in a warehouse. The FBI staked out the warehouse hoping to capture Gin as it was believed he could lead them to the boss,<ref name=599p9>Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 9: "Akai's Past"</ref> but the Black Organization discovered Akai's true allegiance and Gin never appeared.<ref name=599p10>Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 10: "Akai's Past"</ref>

This shows that Gin considers Akai's death as "his kill" even though it was Kir who pulled the trigger at Raiha pass, and if scar Akai is killed, it will be Chianti or Korn who finishes the job. He is apparently satisfied with the orchestrator role and doesn't feel the need to personally kill Akai himself.</ref> He is not easily frustrated and takes setbacks in good stride, shown when he coolly orders a retreat when Shuichi Akai ambushed the Black Organization and when [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] tricks him and wastes his time by disguising as [[Scar Akai]]. Gin doesn't seem to enjoy Vermouth's antics; he tried to put an icepick through her head after she disguised herself as a waiter to tease him. Gin is very skilled in his managerial role; he keeps the boss informed on current happenings, yet is also a decisive and quick acting leader in his own regard. Gin often consults the boss about actions that may have potentially serious ramifications, like getting permission to kill Kogoro, who is popular and closely connected to the police, after Gin found a [[Microphone|listening device]] and [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|tracking device]] on Kir's shoe that he believes were planted by the detective. Although Gin follows all orders from the boss, he acts on his own initiative on more than one occasion. One such action was deciding to poison [[Shinichi Kudo]] with the recently approved [[APTX 4869]] at [[Tropical Land]] after Gin caught him spying. Gin's effective leadership is shown in how he manages the diverse personalities of his team on missions. If Gin feels any frustration or scorn regarding the behavior or abilities of any of his teammates, he does not show it unless it is actively interfering with his plans or threatening the Organization. However, that doesn't stop him from being contemptuous about others behind their backs.<ref>Gin disliked Pisco, but did not show it while detailing him about his mission. Gin only complains about Bourbon, Vermouth, and Pisco when they are not around (Bourbon, Vermouth) or their opinion does not matter. (Pisco)</ref> The other members' respect for Gin keeps them in line and coerces them into obeying orders. Only Vermouth has actively objected to Gin's plans on a mission. He also respects the desires of his teammates to a certain degree, even though he may distrust them. Despite his personal suspicions, he let Vermouth persuade him to leave Conan and Kogoro alone, and he decided not to kill anyone at the hospital after [[Rena Mizunashi|Kir]] requested it even though he was unsure of her loyalty.

However, Gin has two notorious weaknesses. He has difficulty remembering the faces and names of those he has killed. Vodka's memory makes up for this somewhat, but Gin notices connections later as a result. As soon as Gin becomes suspicious of someone he gets to work looking into them,<ref>Manga Chapter 700: Dangerous Area</ref> but if his suspicions are proven wrong he tends to lose interest completely.<ref>Vodka's report about "Shinichi" appearing on the Ghost Ship.</ref><ref name=Scar/><ref>Movie 13: [[The Raven Chaser]]</ref> His more conventional logic has also meant he has missed important deductions. This was most notable when Gin decided to stop searching lockers because no adult could fit in them, apparently overlooking that one of the lookouts had mentioned a kid entering the station earlier, although this was mentioned to Vodka, and not to him, and Vodka did not notify him of that fact.

In Black Impact, it might also be suggested that he is quick to jump to conclusions, as seen in a previous episode.

He found a strand of [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]]'s hair in his car, and he immediately convinced himself that [[Shiho Miyano|Sherry]] is the one that planted the bug, which was planted by Conan in his own car, without any other proof, In Black Impact, he is still convinced that the bug is hers, without trying to deduce where she got it from.

In Black Impact, Conan planted a bug and transmitter outside Rena's apartment, to help with a ding dong dash case. She did hire Kogoro to help solve the case. After that case was resolved, Conan completely forgot about the bug and transmitter completely, and just walked off.

He began remembering it, when it began raining. To make matters more interesting, the rain dislodged them from the wall, and it was immediately stepped on by Rena, and stuck to one of her shoes.

Shortly afterwards, Conan heard the 7 children melody, her talk to Gin, Vodka, Vermouth, Chianti, and Korn, and that her code name is Kir, and managed to stop one assassination attempt before Kir got hurt, and was taken to the Haido Central Hospital.

Shortly afterward, Gin found the bug and transmitter that was stuck on Kir's shoe, and was convinced Kogoro planted it, and he immediately changed their target to [[Kogoro Mouri|Detective Kogoro Mouri]].
Nothing could convince him that it was not planted by Mouri at all, not even when Akai sniped the bug and transmitter, and was sniping at the snipers.

It did not change at all, when Conan managed to kick a soccor ball hard into the Detective Agency window, and asked, "Uncle, how is the horse races going?" Even though they found out that Kogoro was merely listening to the horse races, Gin did give the order to kill Kogoro and the [[Conan Edogawa|little kid]], which thankfully, Akai diverted their attention to him instead.

Akai's plan worked, and they thought that the FBI planted the bug and transmitter, but nothing could convince him that Detective Kogoro Mouri was innocent of any meddlling in their affairs.

Gin is a tall, thin man of uncertain age. His most noticeable feature is his long silver hair that goes down to his hips. (In the anime, Gin's hair was light-brown at first, then blond, then finally changed to match the manga as can be seen in the 13<sup>th</sup> movie: [[The Raven Chaser]].) It is cut at the front into bangs which often obscure his eyes, which are blue (like all the other characters) in the manga, and green in the anime. He has, as Shinichi had put it, the eyes of someone who has easily killed many people without a care.<ref name=Eyes/> In the manga, his face is somewhat gaunt, with visible cheekbones and a triangular dark patch below each eye. Later in the series he receives a scar on his left cheek after a bullet from Shuichi Akai's rifle grazes him.<ref name=Scar>Manga Chapter 504: Black Organization vs. FBI 2</ref>

Gin's look has never changed in all of his appearances. He wears a black fedora with a grey or white hatband. His only shown outfit is a knee length, notched lapel, black trenchcoat with the collar upturned to obscure part of his face and a loose white turtleneck underneath. He likely also wears a ballistic vest beneath these. He wears black trousers and black dress shoes. When trying to avoid leaving fingerprints, he dons a pair of white gloves, black in the anime.

Gin is a heavy smoker. He is also left handed.

Gin is quite perceptive and intelligent.<ref name=Smart/>. He can smell out traps his partner Vodka easily falls for. Gin is also good at deduction. He correctly infers the FBI plan to move the captured Organization member Kir, and also explains to Vodka the biological principles behind why an old man with severe heart conditions wouldn't go to a cold cabin in the dead of winter. Unlike most intelligent characters in the series, Gin also relies on his good instinct. A few times so far, he correctly suspects there is more to a situation than the evidence alone indicates. He correctly suspects that Kogoro (really Conan) was not completely innocent<ref>Volumes 48, Files 9-10, Volume 49, Files 1-4, Chapters 599-504</ref> and that getting Kir back from the FBI was too easy. At one point while searching for the "clever fox" who set them up, Gin begins opening child size lockers on a whim. In his first appearance in the series, Gin goes to [[Tropical Land]] with Vodka to complete a transaction with [[Black organization#Unnamed Weapons Smuggler|a company owner]] they were blackmailing for gun smuggling. The two board the Mystery Coaster before the meeting to observe from the pinnacle of the coaster if the business man had come alone to the meeting spot below the ferris wheel. A murder occurs on the coaster and the two are forced to remain at the scene as suspects, although Gin yells at [[Shinichi Kudo]] and [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] several times to hurry up and let them go. Shinichi observes that Gin has the appearance and air of a cold-blooded killer. They are released after Shinichi apprehends the true killer. His and Vodka's suspicious appearance cause Shinichi to follow them and encounter them completing the transaction with the businessman. Gin, who seems to have been keeping watch, knocks down Shinichi with a pipe he found, then force-feeds him [[APTX 4869]]. His parting words to Shinichi are "So long, great detective."

Before the current storyline, undercover [[FBI]] agent [[Shuichi Akai]] dated [[Akemi Miyano]], the older sister of [[Shiho Miyano]], in order to infiltrate the Organization. Akai's true allegiance was discovered and he was expelled from the organization. Initially, the Organization couldn't do anything about Akemi because they needed the loyalty of her sister Shiho Miyano, who very valuable as a researcher on the APTX 4869 project.

Two years later the Organization decided that the risk of her contact with Akai was too much. They decided to create a situation where they could eliminate her by having her do a bank heist she was supposed to fail, and Gin was put in charge of making a deal with her. Akemi Miyano was told that the only way that she and [[Shiho Miyano|her sister]] would be allowed to leave the Black Organization was to successfully pull off a 10 billion yen bank robbery. After succesfully completing the robbery and tricking her into accidentally poisoning one of her team members, she confronts Gin at the shipping yard to complete the transaction. She tries to tell Gin to hold up his end of the bargain, but he tells her the Organization wouldn't let her sister leave anyway because she was too valuable. He then kills Akemi and flees.

Gin and Vodka are tasked with eliminating a former business parter who had become useless by tricking her into making a transaction with them involving what she thinks is information about 400 million yen worth of gold. Their plan is set aboard a [[Wikipedia: Shinkansen|Shinkansen]]. During a meeting in the dining car, Gin and Vodka will receive a large case of money from the client who will be given a black attaché containing what she believes is the gold information. However, the case actually contains a bomb rigged to explode when she calls a certain number on her mobile phone.

Conan almost walks into Gin's legs when Gin and Vodka board the Shinkansen. Vodka yells at Conan, and Gin glares coldly, but neither recognize him. It is much later revealed Gin is particularly bad at remembering the faces of those he killed. They sit down nearby with their black attaché case. When they leave to go to the dining car and make the transaction, Conan bugs their seats. After they return with the suitcase full of the client's money, Conan overhears Gin explain to Vodka the details of the bombing plan. Conan is also able to learn Gin and Vodka's codenames. Gin and Vodka disembark at Nagoya to avoid being caught in the explosion, and Conan is stopped from chasing them by Ran. Conan then turns his attention to finding the bomb and successfully ejects the black case from the train before it explodes. Unfortunately, the client knows little about Gin and Vodka or their Organization so the police are unable to do anything.

[[Tequila]] calls Vodka and tells him to inform Gin that the briefcase exchange for the list of world's best programmers was successful. Gin does not show up in person in this case.

Gin and Vodka were supposed to kill Sherry because she stopped all work on the APTX project to boycott the Organization's reticence about Akemi Miyano's death. Gin and Vodka pull Shiho from her lab and handcuff her to a pipe in a small locked room to await the Organization's judgment. At this time, Sherry takes the Apoptoxin 4869 she had hidden to commit suicide, but instead she shrinks and escapes through a rubbish chute. When Gin and Vodka return, she isn't there. They and many other members of the Organization are ordered to find her, but he and Vodka have no luck. Gin in particular is shown to have an obsession with capturing Sherry and killing her himself.

One day, Conan and Haibara saw Gin's car on a street. They attached a transmitter to it only some seconds before he arrived there. After a while, Gin found an auburn hair in the car and he deduced it was Shiho's. He also found the transmitter and destroyed it, after that is the famous moment when he imagines Shiho naked.
However, Conan and Haibara knew he was going to go to the Haido Hotel, so they followed him too. There, Pisco kidnapped Haibara and took her to a room with a big fireplace. When Gin and Vodka arrived at the room, she (with her adult body because of the Baikal) was hidden in the fireplace. Gin heard her breathing, and intercepted Haibara at the roof when she tried to flee, shooting her many times. When he was ready to kill her, Conan arrived and shot a sleeping dart at Gin. However, he showed a resistance to it, not falling asleep instantly, and shot himself in the arm so that he could stay conscious. After that, he climbed down the chimney, killed Pisco and climbed back up. He returned to his car with Vodka and Vermouth and conversed about Sherry or Shiho. In this chapter, it is hinted that he knows Shiho very well, predicting her movements and being able to confidently identify her by just a hair she left in his car.

Gin and Vodka are in a bar discussing plans to capture Sherry with Vermouth. Meanwhile, the detective boys and Conan are taking a bus to a ski resort and meet Araide and Jodie on the bus. Haibara senses that Vermouth is on that bus and hides to prevent herself from getting caught. Soon after, the bus gets hijacked by two armed men who use the passengers as hostages and demand the city to release their boss. Conan attempts to search for a way to apprehend the men, investigating their bags and realizing that they contain explosives.

Once arriving at their destination point, Conan reveals that the two people are the jewelry robbers. Conan reveals that they hijacked a car as evidenced by the man's inability to handle the foreign car and how coins were found in the ashtray yet the man is a smoker. Conan apprehends the two culprits and proceeds to the subway. Once there Conan places the CD containing the program the Black Organization wants and places it in a coin locker with a check sticking out of the prearranged locker. Vodka arrives and takes the CD but is stopped by Gin who revealed that there is tape on the CD which means that someone was trying to get his fingerprint. Gin finds a tracker device. He places his hand on the case to find out its warm meaning the one who set up the disk is nearby. Conan manages to hide in a coin locker and passes out due to the lack of oxygen; He is found by Haibara the next day.

Gin has been ordered by the boss to look into Vermouth's movements related to a Halloween party aboard a ship and tells Vodka to board in costume and investigate. Gin has no idea what Vermouth is doing but tells Vodka to kill her if she does anything weird even if she is the boss’s favorite. Aboard the ship, a man blackmailed by Vermouth kills the ship's captain, and the murder is solved by [[Heiji Hattori]] in disguise as Shinichi Kudo. Vodka initially reports Shinichi's presence to Gin, but then corrects the information when Heiji takes off the Shinichi disguise and states that he was hoping that appearing as Shinichi would lure the real guy out.

The murderer then begins shouting that someone named Vermouth forced him to murder the captain. Vodka presumably reports this development to Gin who reports to the boss because Vermouth later receives a message from the boss ordering her back. Vermouth, who was never aboard the ship in the first place, is badly injured by [[Shuichi Akai]] and a self-inflicted gunshot and calls Gin from a telephone booth for pickup because she can't move. While on the phone, Gin asks her if she knows someone named Shinichi Kudo and she lies, saying she doesn't know him.

Gin coordinates the assassination of Domon Yasuteru. His first plan, is to get Domon interviewed using Kir, have him sit down on a bench, where [[Chianti]] and [[Korn]] to kill him. His backup plan; which consisted of Vermouth in disguise crashing in front of Domon's car, after which Kir, Chianti, and Korn would kill Domon and his two bodyguards, was canceled when he discovered the transmitter Conan set up. Gin assumes the transmitter was set up by Kogoro, and gets permission from the boss to kill him. However, the assassination of Kogoro is interrupted by Conan whose soccer ball breaks Mouri's window, distracting Chianti and Korn who were taking aim. Over the protests of Vermouth, Gin orders the two snipers to kill Conan as well for, as Vodka says, being suspicious. This too is interrupted when Shuichi Akai snipes the transmitter out from between Gin's fingers from 700 yards away. A brief exchange of gunfire ensues but ends quickly after Akai shoots out Gin's scope and puts two bullets in his flak jacket and one in his cheek, leaving a small permanent scar on his face. Gin recognizes the disadvantage and orders the Black Organization members to disperse without taking any more action against Conan or Kogoro. Gin and the other operatives assume the transmitter was set up by the FBI, but still has residual suspicions about Kogoro. Gin eventually decides not to kill Kogoro at the word of Vermouth.

In an attempt to locate Kir's whereabouts throughout the city, Gin is convinced that Kir is captured by the FBI. Chianti wonders if Kir could betray the organization, but Gin dismisses the idea, saying there's no chance of that happening. He recalls an incident from the past when Kir discovered a traitor within the organization. Although she was caught by them and supposedly tortured, she never revealed any information. He tells her that he will be watching the whole assassination by planting a bug and microphone on Kir so that she can't do anything suspicious. Gin watches as Kir shoots Akai twice, one in the lung and one in the forehead, and believes that Akai is dead and that Kir is on their side.

Before Gin orders Chianti to shoot Scar Akai, Vermouth appears and speaks with Gin about a plan she received the boss' authorization for. Scar Akai notices Chianti taking aim at him and smirks, which makes her lose her aim and allows Scar Akai to disappear into the crowd. Gin lowers the gun from Kir's head and decides to drop the assassination attempt, commenting how Bourbon likes to do what he pleases.

After finding out from Vermouth that Sherry was going to board the Bell Tree Express train, Gin and Vodka organized an effort to place enough explosives at the train's destination station to blow up the entire train. Meanwhile, Vermouth and [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] boarded the train with a separate plan in mind to catch Sherry. When Vodka wondered how Vermouth and Bourbon were going to get off the train before it arrived at the station, Gin revealed that he didn't know or care about their fates. Vermouth's attempted assassination of Sherry wound up stopping the train before it arrived at the destination station, rendering Gin's plan moot. Gin asked for confirmation that Sherry was killed, which Vermouth endorsed only to find out soon after that she had been tricked. Because Vermouth kept this deception secret, Gin believes Shiho to be dead.

Gin and Vodka eliminate the FBI by hacking the FBI Communication code. When the FBI decides to plant a fake code, Rum is able to detect and counterattack one of the FBI members, [[Andre Camel]] instead. He orders Kir and Vermouth to shoot Camel at Umibotaru, which causes him to fall into the sea. As they retreat, Gin notices a fire burning in Umizarujima, realizing that Camel swam to the island to hide. They arrive at Umizarujima and split up to search for Camel. After a skirmish, Conan and Akai were able to fool the Black Organization into thinking that they successfully eliminated Camel. After that, Vermouth shows Camel's photo to Korn and he remembers that Camel is the person from the photo that Rum sent to him 2 years ago.

A mask with forged lipstick mark is left behind with the empty getaway vehicle by an unknown party to implicate Hirota. Later that night, Gin and Vodka assassinate the two other bank robbers and place Hirota's lipstick at the crime scene. After realizing she was set up my someone, Conan sneaks into Hirota's apartment and attempts to stop her from meeting the assailants. Ignoring Conan's warning, Hirota heads to an empty warehouse and meets Gin who reveals her true identity to be Akemi Miyano. She asks him to release her sister in exchange for the 10 billion yen. Gin however murders her and takes the keys to a coin locker containing the money from the robbery. Akemi then reveals to Conan the existence of the Black Organization, and the location that she hid the stolen money before dying.

He shoots at Sonoko, who got her hair permed and looks a lot like Sherry, but he realizes that it wasn't her after all after Conan gets Sonoko to dodge the bullet and she starts panicking in a very uncomposed manner. He leaves the towers in the end, looking forward to killing Sherry the next time he sees her.

In the beginning, during Conan's dream, Gin appears and is shown to know Conan's true identity. Later, in reality, Gin is looking for a memory card that contains information crucial to the Organization. His next appearance is during the climax of the movie. He, Vodka, Chianti, and Korn arrive at the top of Tokyo Tower in a black helicopter. Gin calls Irish and tells him to hold out the computer chip, then orders Chianti to kill Irish and destroy the chip in one shot. After Conan catapults the broken light into the back of the helicopter and Vodka is trying to get it back in control, he wonders who could have done so much damage to the Organization and leaves the scene.

The [[The Boss|boss]] trusts Gin enough to make him an executive agent in the organization, and for good reason: Gin is among the most loyal of the high-ranking BO members. Gin follows the boss' orders closely and virtually never acts against the Organization's greater interests, and in return the boss entrusts Gin to direct critical missions and key assassinations. The boss often issues orders to Gin directly by text message for him to disseminate to the others, and the two are implied to contact each other fairly often about instructions and suspicions. He has his boss ear which make him a made-man, anything he want to handling the operatings that against the interests of the organization, such as change the assasination plan from Domon to Kogoro, because his wanting to deal with Sherry and set up a lot of bombs in station containing police officers. For this reason the FBI thought Gin would be able to lead them to the boss if they captured him.

Gin is [[Vodka]]'s superior and they frequently work together, or are seen communicating with one another by phone. Vodka shows Gin absolute respect, using honorifics<ref>Vodka uses "aniki" meaning literally meaning "older brother", but in context means "one's senior".</ref> while speaking with Gin rather than simply using his codename like other agents do. Gin in turn values Vodka for his obedience, so Gin occasionally orders Vodka to go on missions where he needs objective observation or that are annoying.<ref>Both of these were requirements in the Halloween Showdown. == Name origin ==
Gin comes from the [[Wikipedia: Gin|hard liquor]] which is known for its juniper berry flavor. It follows the Black Organization codename pattern of hard liquor codenames for men. The codename is probably also a pun on Gin's hair color. Gin pronounced with a hard "g" like "gun" in Japanese (ぎん ''Gin'') means "silver" (銀). This pun was used by a victim to implicate Gin as his killer in [[Countdown to Heaven]].

Gin's English name, Melkior, is the name of one of the Magi, or three kings, who visits the infant Jesus in Christian tradition. The name is Semitic and means 'king city.' Gin's English name was later switched to Gin to follow the Japanese.

Gin looks at him harshly, and the man fearfully shrinks back into his car. In some regions, it is believed that the people with green eyes can bestow the evil eye, intentionally or unintentionally.
* In episode 425, Gin took Korn's rifle to locate Shuichi Akai who was on a building that is 700 yards. At that moment Akai shot at Gin and the bullet was very visible on Gin's reticule. Gin managed to move his head in time to mostly dodge the bullet.
