At the beginning of the series, Shinichi brings his friend [[Ran Mouri]] to [[Setting#Tropical_Land|Tropical Land]], a local theme park, to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there.<ref name="e1" /> As they are leaving, Shinichi witnesses a suspicious exchange between an unknown business man and [[Vodka|a man in black]] in a secluded area by the ferris wheel. While spying on the suspicious men, Shinichi does not notice [[Gin|another man in black]], who knocks him out from behind and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as [[APTX 4869]]. As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Professor Agasa made for him. He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Professor Agasa. In some situations, when there's only Ran, Sonoko, and himself, he will use Sonoko instead to solve the case at hand. Because of that, Sonoko eventually becomes another moderately well-known "sleeping" detective, although her reputation is only known to the local police investigation team and Sonoko's friends. In much later files, Conan has solved the case as himself then claimed afterwards that Shinichi told him what to say.

Soon after being shrunk, Conan sets the plan to pursue and arrest the Black Organization members. Initial attempts were in vain until Haibara appears and starts giving clues on their whereabouts. However, in some of his early attempts, Conan tends to underestimate the ability of the Organization, leading to situations where he or his close friends being harmed and almost killed. Once understood the Organization and having allies to help, among them Shuichi Akai, who had been undercover in the organization and knows their ways, his later plans are more successful to foil Black Organization's plans, although he hasn't been able to expose the Black Organization and arrest their members yet.

== Personality ==
As Conan, Shinichi tries to behave like a child. He refers to Ran as "Ran-neechan" (''nee-chan'' meaning older sister, a common nickname Japanese children give to teenagers and young adults they look up to), and refers to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan" (''nii-chan'' meaning older brother). He also refers to Kogoro as "Oji-san" or "Occhan" (both meaning Uncle), although he also does this as Shinichi. As Shinichi, he refers to Conan as usually "Conan-kun" or the "Kid in the Glasses". Shinichi treats Conan as a separate person completely, thinking for example, "changing back into Conan".

Conan remains very close to Ran, who in return is very protective of him. However, because Ran is unaware of his true identity, Conan often finds himself in awkward situations with her, such as when she confessed her feeling for Shinichi to him and when she made him bathe with her at a hot spring.

Conan's intelligence remains intact even though he has shrunken into a child. As Shinichi, his deductive ability earned him the monikers "[[Wikipedia:Heisei|Heisei]] Holmes" and "Savior of the Japanese police force". Conan maintains an extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases and escape tricky situations. Conan tries to speak in a child-like manner when dealing with adults, but he often gets caught up in the current case and begins speaking like an adult, referring to advanced topics and using reasoning much too complex for a normal child. When this happens, he often tries to pass it off as "something [he] heard on TV" or "taught by uncle Kogoro/professor Agasa/Shinichi-niichan". Although as the series has progressed the adults around him have become more used to his "being quite smart for a child", causing him to behave more like himself around them, he still tries to pass as a normal child. The only police officers with whom Conan can speak in a professional manner are the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]], especially [[Jodie Starling]], [[Shuichi Akai]], [[James Black]], and Inspector [[Kansuke Yamato]] of the Nagano Police, all of whom suspect that there is more to Conan than meets the eye.

Conan tends to act more like himself around the [[Detective Boys]], even to the point that they find it odd when he acts like a child around adults. He will often play games like baseball with the Detective Boys, but he is too used to soccer to perform well and will even instinctively use soccer techniques, such as kicking in games that do not call for it. Because he is unfamiliar with popular games and TV shows, and bad at video games, Genta and the others tend to think of him as dumb. This annoys Conan so much that he will secretly watch TV in the living room after Kogoro and Ran go to sleep to get more "practice" in.

While he thinks that criminals should be punished, he also seem willing to give culprits, who has attempted murder due to misunderstandings and fail, a second chance and let them off the hook.

After he had one time failed to stop the culprit from committing suicide, he began to believe that a detective who has cornered a killer and just let him kill himself is no better than a murderer, and therefore he tries to do everything to stop it.At times when he fails to save the killer it haunts him .

== Appearance ==

Conan has dark brown hair which mostly hangs downwards just above his blue eyes, but there are also a few strands that stick up at the front and back of his head. Conan's usual outfit consists of a blue suit jacket with a single button and a pair of shorts, red trainers and white socks, even though he has taken to wearing more casual clothing as time goes on. He also wears a red bowtie and his dad's old glasses. Both these items were later [[Gadgets|specifically modified]] by Professor Agasa to include a [[Voice-Changing Bowtie|voice changer]], [[Button Speaker|microphone]], and [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|homing device]], to aid in Conan in his cases. His [[Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes|red shoes]] have also been modified to harness electric and magnetic fields to stimulate pressure points on Conan's foot, greatly enhancing his kicking power.

Additionally, much like Hattori and Shinichi, Conan is incredibly popular. Ayumi and Haibara both have crushes on him, he has been hit on by girls around his shrunken age repeatedly, and even Jodie and Vermouth have both been charmed by his charisma. One even promised to make him her husband. Additionally, in the Red, White, Yellow case, Conan was specifically referred to and asked for help by a fellow classmate.

All of Shinichi's detective skills carry over to his Conan form, although Conan does not the have the reputation Shinichi had. He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to remember every detail of an investigation or other topics he cares about, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Conan's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony that other people miss, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading in his "first childhood". There are only few people like [[Heiji]], [[Hakuba]] and [[Yusaku]] who are at the same detective level as Conan, with Yusaku be the only person who is noticeably better than Conan.

As a child, Conan can attract less suspicion while investigating crime scenes, get away with searching people's personal property, and ask innocent questions without setting suspects on guard, although it comes with the drawback of not having Shinichi's authority or reputation. Conan is just as skilled as Shinichi in soccer, but a lot less powerful because he only has the strength of a young child. To make up for this, Conan uses Agasa's Power-enhancing kick shoes. Conan uses signature, powerful precision kick to knock out criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Like Shinichi, Conan's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing, snowboarding, and ice-skating.

Conan also has some skill with firearms despite the recoil being much more severe for a child's body. He shoots out a bus window during a bus hijacking, and precisely grazes Ran's leg to render her useless as a hostage in the second movie.

Conan's nimbleness is especially noticeable in the non-[[canon]] movies. For example, in the sixth movie, Conan is seen to fight with various antagonists, and he even holds his own against Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer who bests even Ran in combat. In the fourteenth movie, Conan does a back flip on his skateboard in order to avoid being killed by the blimp's hijackers. Conan shows a proclivity for skateboarding. In the movies and anime, Conan can easily perform very complicated tricks and dodges with his skateboard at high speed.

Conan cannot sing on key in the slightest so he is often accused of being [[Wikipedia:tone deaf|tone deaf]]. Despite being a hilariously awful singer, Conan has [[Wikipedia:perfect pitch|perfect pitch]] and can identify notes accurately even in difficult contexts like the sound of phone button presses forming a melody. In Episode 11: The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case, he knows that the piano is in tune and deciphers a message at the end just by listening to the notes that are played. Haibara directly described Shinichi Kudo as having perfect pitch in the last scenes of the twelfth Detective Conan movie, [[Full Score of Fear]]. He also manages to replicate and sing dial tones for a phone, showing that the reason he can't sing is because he simply doesn't have ''relative'' pitch. In File 728 (Episode 614), Conan stated he isn't very knowledgeable about music but identified the untuned piano key whereupon Haibara joked about his sharp ears despite being tone-deaf.

Also, to be like his favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes, he plays the violin. This was confirmed in movie 12 of the 'Full Score of Fear' when he played "Amazing Grace" for Ran. However, he is stumped on what Ran meant when she said, "He has a funny habit when he plays."

Conan can defuse a bomb effortlessly without external instruction. This has been demonstrated once in canon, and multiple times in movies.

Conan shows a keen understanding for criminal psychology, occasionally being able to sense if someone is the true criminal. He can also predict movement and plan of the criminals, and in some cases, he used this skill to "bluff". By deliberately giving wrong deduction, he managed to make the criminal reveal the key evidence of the case, confess, abandon suicide's attempt, or lead them to the wrong ends (if they are chasing Conan).

In non canon, it was shown that if the criminal doesn't conform to the general intellectual pattern, Conan will have trouble deducing their crime, even if it is so obvious that the Detective Boys can deduce perfectly.

== Plot overview ==

=== Initial pursuit ===
After Shinichi becomes Conan, he sets out to find the men in black almost immediately. At the suggestion of Agasa, he moves in with Ran and Kogoro, hoping that cases related to them come by. Pretty soon, a case involving a woman name [[Akemi Miyano]] (using the alias Masami Hirota) appears. Akemi robs a bank for the men in black in the hopes that they will free her sister from their organization. Conan is unable to realize the case's connection to the organization until after the men in black have shot Akemi and left her for dead rather than give up such a valuable asset as her sister. In her dying moments, Akemi warns Conan of the danger of the organization.<ref>[[Volume 2#File 013 - The Missing Man|Volume 2, Files 13-16: "The Missing Man"]]</ref>

Conan runs across the men in black again on a bullet train, this time learning their codenames: [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]].

At a game convention, Conan meets a third man in black named [[Tequila]], only to have him die in an explosion meant for someone else. Conan learns about a meeting place from the murderer, but just before he reaches the bar an explosion set by the men in black destroys the place entirely, leaving Conan without any leads.

Later on, Conan meets child-size biochemist [[Ai Haibara]], the creator of [[APTX 4869]]. In a phone booth, Conan takes the pill originally meant for his return trip to Tokyo in order to conceal his identity from Ran. During this time, he manages to confess his feelings to her. Although they are romantic interests as Shinichi and Ran, Conan and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] share a brother/sister kind of relationship. Ran plays a nurturing protective role and treats Conan like a child version of Shinichi. They do a lot of activities together, such as swimming, going to the movies or festivals, and more. Ran and Conan both look out for each other's well-being. Ran stands up for Conan during Kogoro's outbursts and destroys any criminals seeking to inflict harm on Conan with her karate. Conan lends an ear and advice when Ran is in an difficult situation or needs to vent, and he comforts and encourages her when she is feeling down, especially about Shinichi being away for so long. It is even likely that Ran subconsciously knows that Conan actually ''is'' Shinichi, even though she seems reluctant to follow that notion.<ref>Ran told Conan that if only he is Shinichi on Episode 308.</ref>

====Kogoro Mouri====
[[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] and Conan most often see each other as nuisances. Conan dislikes Kogoro's usually poor detective ability and case handling, slovenly personal habits, and overinflated ego. Kogoro's deduction doesn't seem to improve so Conan almost always needs to knock Kogoro out when he starts spouting off incorrect theories. Although in most cases Conan merely sees Kogoro as a drunk idiot, he often is impressed when Kogoro gets serious and actually gets the case right, so he will allow the "non-sleeping Kogoro" to take the spotlight. Kogoro views Conan as a freeloader who constantly gets underfoot and never fails to insinuate himself at cases, "interfere" with the scene, and pipe up with childish observations that consistently ruin Kogoro's deductions. However, their relationship is actually intimate and Kogoro takes care of Conan just like a member of the house.
Conan in return does everything in his power to protect Kogoro from getting into troubles with the Black Organization.

Conan's parents, [[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]] and [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]], like to push their child towards becoming an even better detective. They enjoy giving him challenges, typically without letting Conan know who's giving them; once they disguised as Black Organization operatives trying to kill Shinichi Kudo in order to show Conan how dangerous his goals are. However after seeing that their son is determent to dive into the matter, they decide to follow his wish, and even helps him out with disguises and plans.

Yukiko loves to meddle in Conan's (and Shinichi's) love life, as she will often make allusions regarding Ran being her possible future daughter-in-law and Ai or Ayumi having feelings for Conan. He doesn't usually pay much attention to them. Once she told Conan that Ai has romantic feelings for him because she looked at him ten times in a short span of time, saying that the only time a girl would do that is if she likes the boy or the boy has something on his face. Conan simply pushes it off as Ai checking on her "lab mouse," but at night, in bed, Conan asks Ai if he has something on his face.

Yukiko helped him out once to keep his secret identity from being exposed to Ran by creating an alibi for him. Yukiko once nearly called Conan "Shinichi" in public but Conan was able to cover it by creating a distraction.

Conan treats [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]] as a member of his own family, like an uncle. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help. Agasa's willingness to help whenever possible makes Shinichi's life as Conan more convenient. He was the one who created most of Conan's gadgets, including his power shoes and tracking glasses. He willingly plays Conan's case solving mouthpiece when Conan lacks someone else convenient to use. When Conan needs something, such as information regarding past cases, he usually asks Agasa to get it. Agasa often acts as a chauffeur because he is trustworthy and the only adult with a car regularly available.

Agasa often worries about Shinichi, especially when he thinks Shinichi might be getting over his head. Agasa almost always responds positively to Shinichi's requests, but doesn't like it when Shinichi hides the reasons for it, especially if it is dangerous.

==== "Shinichi Kudo" ====
They never meet each other for obvious reasons: Conan is Shinichi's secret identity. However, since Conan tries to act as a child, he often thinks Shinichi as a separate character (in one episode, when Ran claims to go to a date with Shinichi, Conan bids goodbye, oblivious for a while that he is actually Shinichi). Judging from his completely made up speech, Conan talks to Shinichi frequently by phone and learns a lot of skills and knowledge from him, and Conan really admires and loves Shinichi. In turn, Shinichi is willing to satiate Conan's curiosity, but at one point he gets really annoyed for Conan's inquisitiveness.

====Heiji Hattori====

When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals, especially after Kudo beats Heiji in their first case. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act like an older brother towards him, much to the annoyance of Conan. Since then, the two have become closest friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They tend to stick together on cases, although sometimes this is because Heiji forces the less enthusiastic Conan to come along. While fond of Heiji as a fellow detective he can relate to, Conan finds Heiji's antics occasionally annoying. Much to Conan's chagrin, Heiji even convinces others that Conan is his disciple. Conan especially dislikes Heiji's dangerous habit of unthinkingly calling Conan 'Kudo' when others are present.

Heiji still maintains some of his original feelings of rivalry, and gets annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better , and will often go to great lengths to show that the "west" (Osaka) is better than the "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

Masumi Sera is like a older sister figure to Conan. She knows that Conan is actually Shinichi Kudo. She is a mystery but is revealed to be the sister of Shuichi Akai and Shukichi Haneda. Conan takes Sera to be like a fellow detective, similar to how he treats Heiji and Suguru.

====Eisuke Hondou====
Eisuke discovered that Conan is the real Sleeping Kogoro before they even first met. Conan found him suspicious due to his resemblance of Rena Mizunashi. Eisuke was quick to notice that Conan's behavior towards Ran was similar to that of a protective boyfriend and decided to monitor him. Eventually, Conan found that he is the younger brother of Rena who is a member of CIA infiltrating the organisation, the relationship between the two seems to have improved somehow after Conan reveals his identity to Eisuke without hesitating refusing his offer to take Ran with him in America. At that moment, Eisuke confesses to Conan in an amicable way that he was aware from the beginning that he was sleeping Kogoro and Shinichi Kudo. He asked Conan to take care of Ran and the two leave on good terms.

====Shukichi Haneda====

Shukichi seems to have noticed Conan's intelligence and trusted his deductions the first time they met. Shinichi has met Shukichi in the past as a child, so it's possible that Shukichi might recognize him as Conan because of his memorization skills, and also due to Shukichi calling Conan a Wizard, the same nickname that Masumi attributed to Shinichi when they met 10 years ago.

[[Ai Haibara]] is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it; indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as [[Yukiko Kudo|Conan's mother]], have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. both victims of the [[APTX 4869]]), she finds it easier to talk to him. She certainly has no qualms about teasing him, and is more than willing to poke a hole in his ego. While Conan initially was disgusted by Ai's ties to the Black Organization, especially with how she introduced herself, seeing her remorse and pain has improved his opinion of her. He is repeatedly protective of her and tries to give her hope when her fear of the men in black is overwhelming.

[[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]] in turn clearly seems to like Conan and isn't aware that the other two Detective Boys are jealous of him because of this. Sonoko is also thinking the same after Sera teased Conan about the girl he likes.

====Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya and Genta Kojima====
[[Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya|Mitsuhiko]] sees Conan as a role model, someone he looks up to. [[Genta Kojima|Genta]], and more so Mitsuhiko, are often impressed by Conan's vast knowledge and incredible deduction skills. However, they both become quite jealous of Conan whenever Ayumi shows gestures of affection towards him (usually a small kiss on the cheek). While Conan initially only tolerated their presence, he has grown fond of them despite their relative immaturity.
In a case, where Genta's father was a suspect, Conan decided to solve the case without telling the other, because he didn't want Genta to worry about his father being a suspect for murder.

He also is aware of Conan's sharp intelligence and takes him seriously so as to take him for questioning the suspects. He trusts Conan so much that he would take him seriously.

[[Kuroda]] is aware how good Conan is as a detective, calling him " Sleeping Kogoro's bag of wisdom", he also trusts his deductions and have already ordered the Tokyo police to follow Conan's Instructions. On the other hand, Conan is suspicious of Kuroda because he almost matches [[Rum]]'s description, he also became shocked that Kuroda became the Superintendent of Tokyo Police in [[Matsumoto]]'s place.

====FBI====
The FBI contains most of the few people that Conan acts normally around despite them not knowing his identity. Conan seems to place trust in the FBI, and occasionally helps in their operations.

====Jodie Starling====
[[Jodie Starling|Jodie]] nicknamed Conan "Cool Kid" and Conan (despite being wary when he first met her) now places complete trust in Jodie. Jodie has also called Conan to share what would normally be classified information, notifying him of a new Black Organization member, Bourbon.

Conan once says to Shuichi, "I'm glad you're an ally."

Even though [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] do not yet know who's interfering with their operations, Gin has been shown to be curious who "that guy" is, referring to Conan. In the movie [[The Raven Chaser]], Gin tries to catch a glimpse of Conan's face from a helicopter, but fails when Conan successfully downs the helicopter. Conan seems to have a very bitter hatred towards them, and this only increases as more people are targeted by the Black Organization.

====Vermouth====
[[Vermouth]] seems to have great personal interest in Conan, referring to him as the Black Organization's 'Silver Bullet'. She also protects Conan, probably because when she was disguising as a serial killer in New York she was saved by Conan (Shinichi at the time) and Ran. When the Organization plans on killing Kogoro, and later Conan, she strongly objects to a degree where Gin suspects whether Kogoro is related to Vermouth. Because of this, Conan does not react strongly when she is mentioned, as opposed to Haibara. He also seems to consider her less of a threat than the other members because he is able to bargain with her about Haibara and knows Vermouth is keeping his secret for personal reasons.

[[Rei Furuya|Tooru Amuro]] (codenamed Bourbon) has attached himself to the Mouri Detective Agency as Kogoro's "apprentice". Conan initially treats him in a somewhat friendly manner, though he privately thinks "another annoying person's showed up" when he learns Amuro will be joining Kogoro on cases. After learning of Amuro's membership in the Black Organization, though, Conan has been relatively nervous about him being near Ran. He's become more cautious and is somewhat confused by Amuro's helpful behavior, though he attempts to pretend nothing has changed. Before being shrunk, Shinichi encountered [[Kaitou Kid]] once during the Clock Tower heist, though they did not meet face-to-face. In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi has become Conan, Kid disguises himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki family's Black Star pearl. When Conan corners him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid implies that he stole all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ends up being a bluff, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid in subsequent encounters. Conan stops Kid from escaping with the jewel often enough that Conan has gained reputation with the press as Kid's "natural enemy". In several instances Conan appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence, and seems excited by the chance to catch Kid again; appropriately, Kid seems to find Conan dangerous enough to warrant specific measures to keep him distracted.

Conan does not buy in to Kid's reputation as a mysterious, uncatchable phantom, saying once "He's only a thief that uses magic",<ref>Anime Episode 515: Kaitou Kid's Teleportation Magic</ref> and encouraging police officers that Kid is only a man and he can be arrested. However, if necessary, the two can put their rivalry aside for a little while and work together.<ref>[[Kaitou Kid and the Four Masterpieces]]</ref> Conan has something of a gentleman's agreement with Kaitou Kid, in that he doesn't try to find or catch the thief outside of heists. In several instances, when Kid does Conan a favor, such as saving Genta's life<ref>[[Big Adventure in the Eccentric Mansion]]</ref>, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape mostly unhindered. This exchange of favors can sometimes become a bit unbalanced; in exchange for not giving Kid away on a train Conan has Kid face down the [[Black Organization]] in disguise, and because Kid narrowly escapes an explosion with his life, he says that Conan now owes ''him'' one.<ref>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 7 (824): "Mystery Train (Final Destination)"</ref>

In the non-[[canon]] movies, it is implied that Kid knows Conan's identity; he even helps Conan maintain his cover by disguising himself as Shinichi so that a suspicious Ran would stop suspecting Conan. However, this has not been confirmed by Gosho Aoyama, nor has it been implied in the manga.

Conan has been trying to discover the truth about [[Mary]] since the day he first saw her in a picture with Masumi Sera. In "The detective boys in the grove" case, he noticed Ai's uncanny resemblance to Mary. Then, he find out that the mysterious girl is the mother of Masumi Sera, Shukichi Haneda and Shuichi Akai and the wife of Tsutomu Akai, now somehow shrunken. On the other hand, Mary remains skeptical of Conan telling her daughter to be aware of him as he isn't the same boy they met 10 years ago.

== People who know Conan's real identity ==

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], [[Yusaku Kudo]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], [[Heiji Hattori]], and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] of the Black Organization also knows about Conan's secret. Later, in Episode 508 of the anime, [[Eisuke Hondou]] confirms Conan's identity as [[Shinichi Kudo]] straight from him. In manga chapter 812-814, [[Subaru Okiya]] ([[Shuichi Akai]] in disguise) confirms that Conan is Shinichi. [[Masumi Sera]] also knows that Conan is Shinichi Kudo before they even first met. It is also hinted that [[Mary]] knows about Conan'd true identity, telling her daughter Masumi to be wary of him.

In the 13th movie, the Black Organization member [[Irish]] discovers that Conan is actually Shinichi Kudo.

The 3rd, 8th, 14th and 19th movies also demonstrate that Kaitou Kid apparently knows Conan's identity and acts to protect it. However, this has yet to be backed up by the original artist, Gosho Aoyama, in the manga or (as would follow) the anime main series.

Gosho Aoyama (and Shinichi, in the story) got the name 'Conan Edogawa' from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories, and Edogawa Rampo, the pen name of Japanese mystery fiction writer Hirai Tarō. Hirai Tarō himself got the pen name "Edogawa Rampo" from a transliteration of "Edgar Allan Poe." Pronouncing Poe's name in a Japanese accent sounds like 'Edogawa Rampo.'

== Character inspiration ==
Gosho said Conan's hairstyle was designed in about one minute. He smoothed [[Yaiba]]'s hair and added a tuft modeled after the apostrophe hairstyle of Kabu from [[Wikipedia:Sally_the_Witch|Sally the Witch]]. The tuft on hair on the top of Conan's head comes from the character Shichimi in [[Wikipedia:Niji Iro Tōgarashi|Niji Iro Tōgarashi]]. Conan's clothes were modeled after [[Wikipedia:Shichi-Go-San|Shichi-Go-San (7-5-3) clothing]]. Young Gosho wore a bow tie and shorts in his Shichi-Go-San photographs. == Background ==
Renya Karasuma was known to be an elderly multi-millionaire and powerful man who allegedly died forty years ago under mysterious circumstances with his legacy unknown. Which means that he may not died, but became younger. He was the most powerful person in Japan according to [[Yusaku Kudo]]. Looks like he had a lot of contacts with famous and powerful people decades ago. He was always getting chased around by cops and detectives. His crest is a creepy bird logo according to [[Ran Mouri]]: a rolled-up crow.<ref>The operatives dress in black, which [[Akemi Miyano]] says is supposed to resemble crows. Furthermore, in the movie introduction sequence of [[The Raven Chaser]], [[Dimensional Sniper]], and [[The Darkest Nightmare]], the Black Organization enshrouded in mystery are each time introduced with an evil looking crow, as like in the ending video of movie 13.</ref>

According to Furuyo Senma, the old famous detective who can solve a case just by sitting down in an armchair, Karasuma inherited the old black {{nihongo|Sunset Manor (or Twilight Mansion)|黄昏の館|Tasogare no yakata}} in the isolated Tokyo mountains at Nishitama, 2 kilometers from [[Wikipedia: Okuno Dam|Okuno Dam]]<ref>Episode 219, but not in the manga. Saguru Hakuba says "The Tokyo case that occurred forty years ago.", and the location is indicated by the road signs on the [[Wikipedia: Shuto Expressway|Shuto Expressway]] and the junction near the villa.</ref> and six miles from a lonely gas station, from his mother and was his vacation home, which for [[Kogoro Mouri]]<ref name=kid>After solving the case, Kogoro was revealed to be Kid in disguise.</ref> looks more like Dracula's castle<ref>In [[Dracula's Villa Murder Case]], a [[Glossary#Anime Original (AO)/ Anime Exclusive|TV original episode]], Kogoro was invited along with Ran and Conan to an old Western building on a lake cliff called "Dracula's Manor".</ref> and up close even more like a haunted house. But he was unable to find it any further to solve the riddle himself. With him being consumed by his own greed for the treasure, he came to hire people to solve the riddle for him, and then began killing them as motivation for the others to work faster. They had made copies of the riddle to hand out on a cheap mimeograph print on straw paper. Hardly anything's been touched since the incident and those murders were the true cause behind the numerous old bloodstains all over in the house, although an attempt to clean it off, not an out-of-control party on the second stormy night in the middle of an illegal auction to sell off over three hundred pieces of the priceless art Karasuma had collected during his lifetime, caused by two men with [[Wikipedia: Cannabis (drug)|marijuana]] leaves tobacco drugs and then disappeared with the art, leaving eight dead and a dozen others unconscious. Among those men were Senma's own father, archaeologist Kyosuke Senma. Spray luminol onto blood, and active oxygen inside the blood will oxidize it, giving off a bluish-purple fluorescent light, and Watson, [[Saguru Hakuba]]'s pet hawk, seems to have picked up a fancy for blood in the time they've spent together in England.

Karasuma is believed to be dead. A fake story says that he died in 1951<ref name=read/><ref name=anime-version/>, half-a-century prior to the series, at the age of 99, but Senma claims that he lived at least ten more years, which means that if he is dead, he died between forty and twenty years prior to the series, back in the days before they invented copiers. Renya had passed on, the Karasuma family had died out, and the house had fallen into other hands when it was still beautiful. Thirty-eight years later, when Senma accidentally let the story slip to him, the famed gourmet detective Shukuzen Oogami immediately tracked down the house and started to look for the treasure two years, but he couldn't solve the riddle. He had put himself into massive debt to buy the house and was in serious trouble, but he was poisoned by his accomplice Senma with potassium cyanide, who wanted to decipher the riddle that took her father's life at all costs. The mansion still has traces after Karasuma's crest on the silver specially ordered by him, not just the flatware, but everything in the house, from the doors, flooring and handrails down to the chess pieces and playing cards. The last young maid chased by Oogami from many applicants was Aki Ishihara and the job paid very well, but the cook's fallen ill and can't come in that day.

The riddle has been solved by the great detectives [[Conan Edogawa]], Saguru Hakuba, Harufumi Mogi, and Ikumi Soda forty years later. It's strange the only clock in a huge house is the one in the dining room. So "The night the two travelers looked up at the sky" means midnight, when the long hand and short hand of the clock both point up. Placing the hands at 12, the key to solving the riddle is the word Senma wrote in blood, "Trump card". He was talking about "playing cards". The king, queen, and soldier in the riddle stand for the King, Queen, and Jack in a deck of cards. The treasure stands for diamonds, the holy grails stands for heart, and the sword stand for spades. So "treasure" and "king" means the King of Diamonds, "Holy grail" and "queen" means the Queen of Hearts, and "sword" and "soldier" means the Jack of Spades. Now Conan turns the hands of the clock in the direction the face of cards in the house are facing. Thirteen to the left, twelve to the left, and eleven to the right. The coating came off. There's gold inside and it's so heavy, this thing is made of solid gold. The walls are crumbling and the gold's showing through. That clock has been the switch to peel off the outer wall. According to Soda, only Karasuma would do something on such a scale, and it must be worth 100 billion yen. Sunset (Twilight) is when the sky shines gold. It's literally a "Golden Manor". [[Kaitou Kid]] comes for Karasuma's treasure, but he has changed his mind. That thing's a little too big for a thief's pocket.

As the highest authority, he directs the Black Organization's activities and plans crimes to protect and advance its interests. He communicates to subordinates by text messages. His phone number<ref>In Japan, an e-mail address is assigned to each mobile phone.</ref> follows the tune of the first few notes "Mother crow, why do you cry?"<ref>The area code phone number for Kurayoshi and Yazu in Tottori Prefecture, 0858, do sound like the "Mother crow" part, but "Why do you cry" doesn't work. The notes on a cell phone are ''FA'' for 1, 2, 3; ''SOL'' for 4, 5, 6; ''LA'' for 7, 8, 9; and ''SI'' for *, 0, #. Each note gates slightly lower as you move to the left on the dial. So if we start with # and not 0, and don't care if the notes are slightly off, we get the email address.</ref> of the children song [[Nanatsu no Ko]]. == Personality ==
If Senma's story is true, then Karasuma is described as a greedy, cruel and impatient man. He appears to be materialistic as he was driven by his own greed while searching for the hidden treasure inside the Sunset (Twilight) Manor. Furthermore, he seems not to value the cost of human life as he killed numerous people that he invited as motivation to find the treasure faster. His house was swarming with cameras hidden all over and monitored from a room somewhere, has no phone line, and they're well out of cellular range. Turn the knob from the inside and a needle pops out, and mook who came on the second floor of the central tower would get a poisoned needle in the palm when they tried to leave. There were guns under pillow in the rooms. Oogami and Senma, who wanted to decipher the riddle and psychologically created another same tragedy, were all along possessed by him.

He is fairly ruthless, willing to dispatch in person senior agents who have been loyal to the Black Organization for many years for a single mistake. Vermouth says that he is always careful to the extreme, the type to ruin the plan by overthinking it.<ref>Manga Volume 67, File 8; anime episode 581.</ref> Somehow, he can maintain loyalty and unity within the codenamed ranks despite many agents disliking or even outright wishing to murder certain others. He is known to give permission to agents who wish to pursue certain secret missions, such as [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] and Vermouth's plan to make sure [[Shuichi Akai]] was truly dead.

He is especially close to Vermouth, who is described as his favorite, much to the chagrin of her enemies and those who mistrust her. He is also close to Gin, who often acts as an intermediary between he and other agents. Gin usually takes the lead planning role in assassinations that he has ordered. While most agents follow his orders, some agents have acted contrary to the wishes of him.

The FBI believed he was hoping to nip a potential obstacle in the bud because Yasuteru Domon, who is a politician hard on crime, may have a chance of becoming the next Prime Minister. He thought Akai could become a "[[Silver Bullet]]", someone who is especially dangerous to the Black Organization. In that regard, he's more like Vermouth than Gin who doesn't believe a single person who can take the syndicate down in one shot exists.

Not so long ago, [[Subaru Okiya]] told Yusaku and [[Yukiko Kudo]] about the cipher left at the crime scene of [[Kohji Haneda]]'s murder. They've reached the conclusion that "ASACA" and "RUM" might not be two different words, but rather, that these eight letters form one single name: "CARASUMA", that means Renya Karasuma.

If that theory is correct, Conan has made an enemy out of the most powerful person in Japan, a multi-millionaire that is not supposed to be a part of this world. That's why they decided that until this comes to a close, Yukiko and Yusaku will stay in Japan and think of a plan. From now on, they're in a do-or-die situation. Just what Conan wanted.

He trusts [[Gin]] enough to make him an executive agent, and for good reason: Gin is among the most loyal of the high-ranking Black Organization. Gin follows his orders closely and virtually never acts against the Organization's greater interests, and in return he entrusts Gin to direct critical missions and key assassinations. He often issues orders to Gin directly by text message for him to disseminate to the others, and the two are implied to contact each other fairly often about instructions and suspicions. For this reason the FBI thought Gin would be able to lead them to the boss if they captured him.

Bourbon also notes that he has arranged for her secret to be revealed to the whole Black Organization in case something happens to him, and points out that the other members would be quite surprised if they knew the nature of the relationship.<ref>Manga Volume 85, File 5; anime episode 783.</ref> During an off-season Halloween party aboard a ship, discovered that Vermouth was up to something without the Black Organization's knowledge, he ordered Gin and Vodka to investigate. Later, he sends a text message to Vermouth's cellphone informing her that her freedom was now being restricted and she was to return: "It looks like I have given you too much freedom. He promoted [[Kir]] because she had uncovered a spy and confronted him. The spy, [[Ethan Hondou]], overpowered and tortured her for information, but [[Rena Mizunashi]] remained silent. Although completely crippled, Rena bit Ethan's wrist to force him to drop his gun, and then killed him. The bite marks and Ethan's recording device coincided with her story, so he promoted her to the codename Kir in recognition of her loyalty and sheer savageness. In truth, he was fooled. Ethan Hondou was Kir's father and they both are [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] spies infiltrating the Black Organization. Rena had made a mistake and was about to be uncovered as a spy. Ethan, who had prepared appropriately ahead of time in case this happened, told Rena to tell the organization she discovered he was a spy and tried to confront him. Ethan then committed suicide after maiming himself and his daughter to make it appear like the story Ethan had just explained. He orders Kir to assassinate the politician Yasuteru Domon while holding an interview. After the Black Organization easily retrieved Kir from the FBI, Gin became suspicious of how ineffective the FBI's plan was and that Shuichi Akai did not made a strong move. Gin thought that Shuichi is hiding something and relays his doubt to him, who also agrees. He and Gin plan a test of Kir's loyalty. Meanwhile, [[Andre Camel|an FBI agent]] becomes a suspect in a coincidental murder case. The Black Organization hears about it, and taking advantage of the FBI's distraction, Gin calls out Kir and tells her his order. In order to regain his trust, she is to call Akai out to meet with her and kill him. Kir meets with Akai at Raiha Pass and apparently kills him. However, he was fooled again. He dispatches [[Bourbon]] to search for the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano. However, Bourbon received his permission to execute a second, secret mission: verified Shuichi Akai's death by disguising as Akai and approaching his FBI colleagues. In truth, Rei has been persevering to turn in Shuichi to the organization to earn higher ranks to approach more closely to him.

He orders [[Irish]] to disguise himself as [[Kiyonaga Matsumoto]], infiltrate into [[Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department]], and retrieve a memory card with the personal information of all the Black Organization agents that have infiltrated various organizations, before the police catch the serial killer, who took it from their agent [[Masaaki Okakura]] he murdered without knowing what is on it, and find the card. Irish sends an email to him about Sumire Shindo, a new tipster with information about the serial murder.<ref>Irish can't contact Gin due his disguise, and neither Vermouth along with Conan. It's unclear who then contact Gin.</ref> When he discovers Conan's true identity, Irish plans to capture and bring the boy before him to discredit Gin, who killed Pisco, whom Irish respected like a father. Irish believes that he would definitely demote or have Gin killed for carelessly leaving Shinichi alive. However, because his cover was blown, Irish was killed by Chianti under Gin's orders before Conan can force him to reveal the boss' true identity.

The FBI's plan to capture Gin fell apart when Akai's true allegiance was uncovered due to a mistake made by [[Andre Camel]]. In the two years since the mission failure, he came to regard Akai could become the Black Organization's silver bullet.

Kyouske Senma was an archeologist who invited to his manor house forty years ago. He wanted Senma to find the treasure before he died of old age. It was a very well-paid job. His wife and then 23 years old daughter Furuyo received large sums of money, along with a letter from him, almost every day. But after six months, the money and letters suddenly stopped coming. Senma, who had never given their his address, vanished forever. Furuyo only found out the truth when she held his last letter, which she had kept as a memento, against a light. He had written a secret note by poking tiny holes in the paper left for her with a needle. He recorded the riddle of the treasure and wrote that many other scholars had been invited to the manor. He also wrote that Karasuma had begun to kill those scholars, one by one, as a warning to the others, and that even if he found the treasure, he too would be killed. She didn't tell the police about it because it was twenty years after the fact. Presumably a victim of his treasure hunting fanaticism, Senma did solve the riddle, and left a clue about it in a note letters written in blood on the piano, and Karasuma never activated the device clock because never knew the answer to the riddle: "I've finally gotten hold of the trump card that will decipher Karasuma's riddle. Kyosuke Senma."

According to the author Gosho Aoyama, the boss has appeared already, made his appearance as another character (Needs a source). Some potential candidates are:
* Genichirou Kaneshiro, a 74 years old computer company owner, due his old age, suspicious behavior pretending to be blind, affection for young women, and especially the fact who was after the [[Night Baron]], a computer virus which has been used by the Black Organization to protect sensitive data. Furthermore, he quickly realizes that Conan is unusual and considers him suspicious. {{nihongo|Kaneshiro|金城|}} meaning "golden castle" and could be referring to the Sunset (Twilight) Manor. * Saizo Kano, the leader of a group of robbers dubbed as the "Organizer in the Shadows", who was supposedly murdered by his three accomplices twenty years ago, but his corpse was never found. The fact that his suppose 'death' should have occurred 40-50 years ago could fit with Haibara's thought that Shinichi had gotten involved in a project that the organization had worked on for a half century.

== Name origin ==
The first kanji "Karasu" is romanized for "Crows" in Japanese, which can fit with the children song The Seven Children, that he uses as his phone number, because there are crows included.

Karasuma is also a Kyoto Avenue's name, cited by Heiji in movie 7, [[Crossroad in the Ancient Capital]], when he and [[Kazuha Toyama]] find the sword in a huge chest with a large amount of drawers related to the roads of Kyoto. The avenue is marked with two crows carved above and below the chest, at the beginning and end of the beam from top to down at the center of the chest between the various drawers.

Kaitou Kid stands on top of the Tokyo Tower with his assistant, Konosuke Jii. He discusses the time he was almost caught by a famous detective in the east, Shinichi Kudo.

At Ekoda High School, Kaito is reading the newspaper about Kaitou Kid's next job and he's pretty happy about it. Aoko took the newspaper away from Kaito and tear it into tiny pieces while getting mad about Kaito taking Kaitou Kid's side. Kaito got all the newspaper pieces while talking to Aoko about not liking Kaitou Kid because her father is the inspector who always lose to Kid. Kaito counts to three and the newspaper appears. Aoko was surprised.

That night, Kid plans to "steal" the clock tower.

The one who killed Ogami is '''Furuyo Senma'''. Senma and Ogami were co-conspirators and had arranged for the detectives to arrive in an attempt to have them find the treasure for them.

The backstory about Karasuma Renya was mostly a lie; the true tale prompted the current tragedy and Senma's motive for seeking out the treasure. Karasuma Renya did not die half a century ago. He was alive at least another ten years. Karasuma Renya had inherited the mansion from his mother, and had found the clues about the King, Queen, and Knight, but he was unable to make any further headway on the riddle. Greedy for the treasure, Renya hired detectives to solve the case for him, and then began killing them as motivation to solve the case faster. Those murders were the true cause behind the bloodstains in the house, not an out-of-control party caused by two wanderers with drugs. Senma's archaeologist father was one of the individuals who has disappeared looking for the treasure, presumably a victim of Karasuma Renya's treasure hunting fanaticism.

Like Karasuma Renya, Senma wanted to know the answer to the treasure hunt that took her father's life at all costs. Sensing that Ogami's greed had got the best of him and that he would kill her after they had found the treasure, she poisoned him using his nail biting habit. She had planned to fake her death, have the other detectives find the treasure and then have them kill each other, but they were not fooled. All the detectives who killed each other are alive all along.

Instead, she is tricked into confessing to Conan, who reveals the true secret of the treasure: the entire mansion is actually made of gold. After solving the case, Kogoro was revealed to be Kid in disguise and escapes before Conan could capture him.

== Manga to Anime Changes ==
* The manga does not fully reveal that the clocktower heist is a flashback from Kid (immediately preceding the events of [[Conan vs. Kaitou Kid|Episode 76]]) until the very end. The anime adaptation reveals it from the start, as it begins by playing the opening scene of Episode 76 from Kaito's and Aoko's perspective, followed by quick shots of Kaitou Kid's notice from that episode and the Black Star itself.
* In the manga, Inspector Nakamori tells Inspector Megure about the code that Kid left behind while still hanging onto the clock face. In the anime, he relays this information while standing by his squad car. This causes a small plot hole, as Nakamori had been clinging to the clock face only seconds ago.
* In the manga, Kaito bears a few scuff marks when he reunites with Aoko at the bottom of the clock tower and repeats his rose trick. In the anime, his face is completely clean.
* The story when [[Akako Koizumi]] saw the prediction of [[Shinichi Kudo|person]] who is to take care of Kid, Akako's associates, and Akako's attempt to cast spells was omitted from this adaptation. It was restored in ''[[Black Star]]'', the adaptation of the same episode in [[Magic Kaito 1412]].
