== Background ==

Some twenty years ago, when Jodie was still just a little girl, [[Vermouth]] killed her parents, who had been working on the [[Black Organization]] for the FBI. Vermouth was surprised to find her in her house, and after Jodie had asked what was going on, Vermouth told her to wait by her father until he woke up, and that "a secret makes a woman woman". She then set the house ablaze, thus destroying any evidence that she had been there, along with the corpses of Jodie's parents and any records about the Black Organization.

Fortunately, Jodie had decided to run down the street to the store to buy her father some orange juice, and had thus survived. She was put under protection by the FBI, although she declined the Witness Protection Program, and eventually became an FBI agent herself under the tutelage and patronage of [[James Black]]. The only remaining memento from her past is the set of glasses she wears, which had originally belonged to her father.

Jodie usually is a very serious person, but also has demonstrated a very playful and carefree side (as it is seen when she is Ran's English teacher). She seems to like movies (especially mystery and action-oriented films), and enjoys action video games.

Sonoko, Ran, and Conan are at the arcade where they meet their High School English teacher, Jodie Saintemillion who is an avid gamer. Jodie introduces Ran to a virtual reality fighting game which uses mechanics to simulate a real fight. Ran loses to a gamer named Kengo Bito who taunts her in her lost. Bito plays the game again his rival, Takayasu Shimizu; The battle is projected on a large screen. Bito's avatar overwhelms Shimizu's but stops at the climax of the match. The people in the arcade realize Bito is dead and the police are called in.

Gin and Vodka are at a bar discussing their plans with the Black Organization member, Vermouth to capture Sherry. Conan and the Detective Boys are taking the transit bus to a ski resort where they meet Araide and Jodie aboard the bus. Haibara is able to sense that Vermouth is on the bus and hides herself to prevent her from being found. Soon after, the bus is hi-jacked by two armed men who use the passengers as hostages and demand the city to release their boss.

Ran, feeling she met the mysterious man before, attempts to remember why. Jodie interrupts the daydreaming Ran in class and asks her the meaning of X to which she is unable to answer correctly. On the way home, they meet Jodie who takes them to the cafe in a department store to warn them about a serial groper. Conan notices a business man named Norihisa Kisugi making a suspicious phone call to a private detective agency director named Katsunori Chuujou. Chuujou demands Kisugi to pay four times the promised amount or he will not hand over the investigation documents concerning an unknown individual. Kisugi agrees and Chuujou enters the department store only to be killed by the unknown culprit.

While at the Agasa's, Conan recalls his last meeting with the Black Organization. Conan deduces that another Black Organization member must have been at the hotel party. This is when he finally singles out Chris Vineyard as his suspect. Heiji came to Tokyo to help Conan out with the case. Heiji suspects Jodie-sensei of being a possible Black Organization member, and although Conan seems reluctant to this idea, they pay Jodie-sensei a visit at her apartment. They find out here that her full name is "Jodie Saintemillion". After Jodie agrees to go out for a while with Heiji and Conan, the man living next door to Jodie falls dead outside from over 30 stories, coincidentally as the three are outside.

Jodie is planning to leave, and Ran and Sonoko, stunned by the news, decide to throw her a going away party. They go into the store and find young woman named Aya being accused of shoplifting by her boss. They manage to come up with three possible suspects. Ran attempts to call Shinichi or Conan for help, since both are better at solving mysteries, but surprisingly, Jodie stops her and tells her to use her own deduction.

Kogoro receives an invitation to a Halloween cruise; the Halloween cruise is famous for hiring guests to star in a horror film. Conan receives the same invitation from Vermouth; the invitation however is addressed to Conan Edogawa and Shinichi Kudo, meaning Vermouth knows his true identity. During the cruise, the party members are divided into groups with team devil consisting of Kogoro, Sonoko, and people disguised as a werewolf, a mummy, a medusa and an invisible man. During the party, the host is shot by a crossbow, attached to the arrow is a card from team devil.

Conan learns from Ran that she had been unable to contact Eisuke since the winter break. She tells him Eisuke last told her that he had found someone from his father's company at Haido Central Hospital, the same hospital in which Rena is currently hospitalized. Conan contacts Jodie Starling to inform her Eisuke may be searching for Rena and learns from her that Eisuke's father, Ethan Hondou, was a spy for the CIA who were investigating the Black Organization. She reveals that Rena and the Black Organization murdered him four years ago. Conan phones Ran asking her how Eisuke recognized the colleague. She replies that Eisuke recognized the person through the phones keypad tone which played the song "Nanatsu no Ko", the phone number of the Black Organization's leader. Conan realizes that a Black Organization member is in Haido Central Hospital. Fearing that the criminal syndicate may be close to finding Rena, Conan and the FBI investigate the hospital. After asking a nurse about a suspicious person, the FBI narrows the suspects list to hospitalized patients between December 18 and December 21 and begin their search for the Black Organization member.

Jodie Starling encounters a man on the street in the Beika district who looks exactly like Shuichi Akai, but with a huge burn scar on the side of his face. After chasing him to an alley where he disappears, she dismisses it as an illusion. She heads to the bank to withdraw some money when a bank robbery occurs. The heavily armed bank robbers begin taking cellphones away from the customers and separate them into two groups; one group are customers who are with relatives or friends, and the others are those who are alone. They order those who are alone to bind the hands, eyes, and mouth of the rest of the patrons.

===Plot timeline===
Jodie appears around the same time as Vermouth as Ran's new English teacher at Teitan High under the name of "Jodie Saintemillion". She comes off as somewhat strange, and refers to Conan as "Cool Guy", which caused fans to believe that she knew his secret. (In fact, she now knows he's an incredible detective, but it is unclear if she knows his true identity). She is noted for often using the phrase of her enemy, Vermouth ('A secret makes a woman woman'). In Episode 226-227, Jodie, after watching Conan suspiciously, informs someone over the phone that she has found their target, whom she refers to as "Rotten Apple".

First indications of Jodie's FBI training are shown during the confrontation with the bus hijackers. She stealthily turns on the safety to one of the hijacker's guns, while knocking him down thus he cannot shoot it when he attempts to fire at her. She appears later in Episodes 271-272 and gives Conan information that allows him to solve the case. In Episodes 277-278, she is investigated by Conan and Heiji, both believing her to be Vermouth in disguise, as she pretends to not know japanese despite being perfectly fluent, and even helps them solve a case in the same episode.

It is not until her personal confrontation with Vermouth that Jodie's past and true identity as an FBI agent is revealed, as well as the real reason she's in Japan and the person she's looking for. She is tracking down Vermouth, and after a brief confrontation with her, Jodie is rescued by Conan and her colleague [[Shuichi Akai]]. Following this, she offers Ai a place in the Witness Protection Program, but Haibara declines. She does not appear again until when she helps Conan prevent an assassination plot of a politician orchestrated by the Black Organization and the subsequent capture and hospitalization of the Black Organization member, Kir.

Jodie has been heavily involved in the Black Organization arc in Episodes 492-504, which has involved the Black Organization and the FBI. The death of her partner, Akai, takes a very emotional toll on her. As it later turns out, they used to be lovers before Akai infiltrated the Black Organization by dating [[Akemi Miyano]], with whom he eventually became more intensely involved. Still, despite their breakup Jodie does maintain strong feelings for him.<ref name=Akai>Manga Chapter 677: The Fated Individual</ref>. When a man who looks like Shuichi Akai appears, Jodie is convinced that the stranger is her partner who has lost his memory, but he is gone before she can affirm her suspicion.

* The records of [[Kogoro Mouri]]'s cases that [[Vermouth]] stole did not contain any cases involving Jodie Saintemillion, but did contain the murder case [[Tomoaki Araide]] was involved in. This was the clue that allowed [[Conan|Conan Edogawa]] to deduce Araide was Vermouth and not Jodie.

Due to her undercover status in Japan, Jodie’s personality and style of communication varies from person to person. Outside of a select few who know of her involvement with the FBI, Jodie maintains her cover at all times, first being a high school English teacher at Teitan High, and later an American tourist vacationing with her “boyfriend”.

===Colleagues===

====Shuichi Akai====
[[Shuichi Akai]] and Jodie are co-workers that came to Japan as part of an FBI unit led by James Black in pursuit of Vermouth and the Black Organization. While their relationship is mostly professional in the current-timeline, the two were romantically involved four to five years prior. When Akai was given the mission to earn the trust of and become a mole inside the Black Organization, he got close to Akemi Miyano for the purpose of using her inside connections. Despite his original intentions, however, Akai genuinely fell in love with Akemi, leading him to break up with a blindsided Jodie. Akai calmly explained his actions to her by saying, “To be able to love two women at the same time…it’s not that handy a personality.” While the two were no longer lovers, Jodie's feelings for Akai never swayed. Despite an end to their relationship, the two continued on as colleagues until the fateful day when Akai was killed. While his death was a tragic loss for all those in the FBI, Jodie took it especially hard. When first hearing the news, she was in complete denial that Akai could die. Despite her frantic attempts at proving Akai was alive, however, Jodie came to the cold hard truth on her own, bringing the agent to tears.

Since the incidents of Clash of Red and Black, Akai has become an understandably sore topic for Jodie. On one occasion when conversation about drinks led Camel to mention Akai's love for Bourbon alcohol and how his presence would have been helpful, Jodie furiously tells him that Shuichi Akai is dead and he should never mention him again. She storms away from her friends. In addition to an inability to cope with this loss, her thought process has become seemingly more aggressive and risky, something that was unheard of during her long, careful investigation of Vermouth. Jodie's mindset has been especially fixated since her encounter with [[Scar Akai]]. When Camel mentioned that the sudden reappearance of Akai could be a trap set up by the organization, Jodie refused to accept the possibility of such a scenario.

====James Black====
Although [[James Black]] is in charge of the FBI agents stationed in Japan, his relationship with Jodie couldn’t be further from the usual boss and subordinate stereotype. In fact, during several occasions, Jodie takes over the role of giving out orders while James serves as her chauffeur. <ref>[[Volume 49#File 502 - A New Objective|Volume 49, File 502: "A New Objective", Page 11]]</ref> While there are many possibilities to explain such an arrangement, such as her strong personality and supposedly bad driving skills, James does not seem to mind in the least. The two have been acquainted long before she joined the FBI, dating back at least twenty years before the series. Following the murder of Jodie’s father, also an FBI agent, James tried convincing the young girl to join the witness protection program. Both out of concern for her safety and respect for his deceased friend, James pushed the offer hard and often, but Jodie refused him time and time again until at some point when she made him a deal; she would join the program if, and only if, she was promised a position in the FBI when she was older. <ref>[[Volume 43#File 437 - Ai Haibara's Resolution|Volume 43, File 437: "Ai Haibara's Resolution ", Pages 15 - 18]]</ref> Whether or not he accepted the deal, Jodie’s current employment with the FBI seems to speak for itself. Despite this unusual working relationship, Jodie is a loyal and hard-working agent that wholeheartedly respects the man whom she has come to see as a sort of father figure. Work aside, the two have been shown to spend time together as friends, often along with Camel.

====Andre Camel====
She first meets [[Andre Camel]] while protecting [[Kir]], and his lies make her suspicious. Later he is forced to knock her out to carry out Conan and Akai's plan to bring Kir back to the Black Organization. Jodie has twice needed to pretend Camel is her lover in order to escape probing questions. The first time was to trick the police when Camel was a prime suspect in a [[Clash of Red and Black#Friday the Thirteenth .28Manga: 605-609.2C_Anime: 501-504.29|murder case]], and later to dodge awkward questions from Ran about why Jodie was still in Japan. Camel plays along awkwardly.

Bitter hatred for [[Vermouth]] is putting Jodie's feelings very lightly. The animosity she holds for the American actress stems back twenty years, during Jodie’s early childhood, when her father was murdered in cold blood and home burned to a crisp by none other than Vermouth. Jodie’s father was an FBI agent working in secret on files pertaining to Vermouth. Thinking that Jodie would die along with her mother and the files when the fire was set ablaze, Vermouth allowed the young girl to wait with her daddy for the bedtime story he promised her before dying. Things did not work out as planned, however, when Jodie left to buy orange juice at the grocery store as the fire began, later returning to find her house in shambles. After hearing that only two bodies were discovered, Vermouth desperately searched for the escapee, but to no avail; Jodie had been placed into the witness protection program by her father’s colleagues.

While Vermouth had since moved on from that incident, Jodie’s whole life was shaped during that fateful night. Albeit hesitant at first to join the program, Jodie made a deal with the persistent FBI agent, James Black: if promised a place in the FBI, she would take up his offer and go into the witness protection program. Ever since then, the burning desire to avenge her father, mother, and lost childhood drove Jodie to seek out the murderess. Vowing to always remember what took place, Jodie even took up the infamous motto that Vermouth spoke on the night of their encounter: “A secret makes a woman, woman.” When, years later, the FBI found a new lead on Vermouth, Jodie was given the opportunity to finally bring the high ranking organization member to justice.

Compared to the girl she made an orphan, Vermouth’s strong dislike for Jodie pales in comparison but exists nonetheless. When the two were finally reunited after a long period of time where both posed as school teachers, Vermouth was just as determined to finish what she started twenty years ago as Jodie was to bringing her nemesis into FBI custody. Although intervention from both sides led to a stalemate during their encounter, their fierce rivalry lives on, each with renewed efforts to put an end to the other.

Impressed by his intelligence, deductionary abilities and knowledge, Jodie considers [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] her "favorite detective". She always takes him seriously, and lets him help her in figuring out plans. Also, it is shown that Jodie has placed great trust on the boy detective. It is because when Conan asks a favor, or is asked by him to do a certain action, even though it doesn't make much sense, Jodie complies without question.

Although the two first met off screen when Jodie began teaching at Teitan High, Jodie’s stern personality and tough teaching style left a bad, perhaps more uncertain, impression on Ran. After coincidentally running into Jodie after school one day at an arcade, an entirely new impression was left on [[Ran|Ran Mouri]]. The high school girl began to admire and enjoy Jodie’s fun, friendly side. On more than one occasion, Ran even went to Jodie for advice. Unbeknownst to Ran, however, Jodie was putting on a front, at times even using the girl as a means to see Conan in action. As an FBI agent, Jodie closely monitored Ran and Conan after discovering a dartboard with their pictures during her investigation of Vermouth. As a school teacher, Jodie easily managed to keep close tabs on the girl labeled “Angel”.

When Jodie left her teaching position, the class was deeply saddened. Despite Jodie’s protests, Ran and Sonoko attempted to throw their favorite teacher a farewell party, which later turned into a case. To prove a friend’s innocence, Ran attempted to call Shinichi to solve the case for her. Jodie, however, took the phone away, claiming that Ran needed to learn how to become independent. This gesture helps encourage Ran to try and solve the case on her own, further strengthening Ran’s admiration for Jodie. When the time came to say good-bye, however, Ran went to use Jodie’s bathroom only to find photos of her friends and her hidden behind the sink mirror. Concerned by the discovery, Ran couldn’t decide what to make of the photos. When she finally found the courage to bring the topic up to Jodie during the latter’s hospitalization, the quick thinking FBI agent explained that displaying photos of friends was an American tradition. Relieved to hear her teacher's reasoning, Ran's admiration and respect for Jodie quickly returned.

====Ai Haibara====
Jodie takes great interest in [[Haibara|Ai Haibara]] originally due to her investigation of Vermouth; although the reasons at first where unknown to her, Jodie suspected that there was a connection between the woman who Vermouth called “Sherry” and the young girl by the name of Ai Haibara. <ref>[[Volume 42#File 433 - The Truth Behind the Mask|Volume 42, File 433: "The Truth Behind the Mask ", Pages 5 - 6]]</ref> Following the [[Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night|showdown with Vermouth]], Jodie encourages Haibara to take part in the witness protection program, an offer that she declines after much consideration. As an FBI agent, she had hoped that Haibara would accept the offer, but because of their similar backgrounds, Jodie’s feelings were far closer to acceptance and admiration than they were disappointment. While the two have yet to completely realize just how similar their pasts are, Jodie has admitted to seeing a little bit of herself in the young girl, even going as far as to comment on how Haibara had something that she lacked at that age; [[Detective Boys|friends]] who she can depend on. <ref>[[Volume 43#File 437 - Ai Haibara's Resolution|Volume 43, File 437: "Ai Haibara's Resolution ", Pages 15 - 18]]</ref> Although the relationship was mostly one-sided in the beginning, Haibara has started to see Jodie as a trustworthy figure of whom she can put her faith in, particularly after the many situations where FBI involvement has saved the day.

When Conan and Jodie succeeded in unmasking Vermouth and subsequently foiling her plans, the Araide family returned home to Japan, much to the dismay of the FBI agents who had gone to such lengths to protect them. It was encouraged that they take part in the [[Wikipedia:Witness protection|Witness Protection Program]], but [[Tomoaki Araide]] declined on behalf of the family. In order to make the transition back to daily life as smooth as possible, Jodie filled Tomoaki in on what he had missed, omitting certain details while making other things up to protect intelligence, allowing the doctor to return to his regular life again. During their final phone call, Jodie tells him that they will not speak again. At the end of [[Clash of Red and Black]], [[Shuichi Akai]] appears to have been killed by [[Rena Mizunashi]]. One of the most popular fan theories is that Akai faked his death with Rena Mizunashi's and [[Conan]]'s help. This theory article compiles clues and logical arguments that some fans believe show how Akai could have plausibly faked his death.

The basic summary of the plan to fake Shuichi Akai's death is that Rena Mizunashi will meet Akai and will pretend to shoot him. To make it look realistic, [[wiki:Blank (cartridge)|blank cartridges]] and blood packets with [[wiki:Squib_(explosive)|small detonators]] will be used. Akai will pretend to die and fall down in the truck. When Rena is fiddling with the small bomb, Akai places [[Rikumichi Kusuda]]'s body in his place. He exits the truck when Kir leaves. Meanwhile [[Jodie Starling]] will have the one of Conan's two cellphones that has Rikumichi's fingerprints on it. She will think they are Akai's and when she goes to validate the identity of the body with the police, it will match Rikumichi's fingerprints and she will be fooled into thinking Akai died.

==Background==
After the events of [[Clash of Red and Black]], [[Gin]] is suspicious of how easy it was to recover [[Rena Mizunashi]] from the FBI and that [[Shuichi Akai]] didn't make a strong move. Gin thinks Akai is still hiding something and that doubt is relayed to the boss who plans a test of Kir's loyalty. Gin meets with Kir and conveys [[anokata|the boss's]] ultimatum: Kir must kill Akai in order to regain the Black Organization's trust. Akai and Kir meet at Raiha pass where Rena shoots Akai twice and blows up the truck with his body inside; however several abnormalities surrounding the circumstances of Akai's death invite the possibility that Akai faked his death with [[Conan]] and Mizunashi Rena's help.

==Initial Planning==

After the death of Black Organization agent [[Rikumichi Kusuda]], [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Conan]] went to talk to [[Rena Mizunashi]] after getting [[Eisuke Hondou]] to "wake her up". They speak with her about sneaking her back into the [[Black Organization]], received her promise to cooperate, and they began to formulate a plan on how to reimplant Rena without the Black Organization rejecting her. At that point, Akai figured that the return Rena plan would make the Black Organization's recovery of Rena seem suspiciously easy, so the Black Organization wouldn't trust Rena and would require her to do some task to regain the boss's trust. Akai, who has experience in the Black Organization and knows how they think<ref name=600p7>Manga File 600 pg 7, All or nothing...</ref>, guessed the requested test of loyalty might be to kill him, so he decided to prepare appropriately to be safe. This would be the time frame when the plan to fake Akai's death was formulated.

At their disposal were three important articles: One is Rikumichi's body which will be used as Akai's body double. Presumably the [[FBI]] kept the body and the car for investigation because [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]], [[Wataru Takagi|Detective Takagi]], and the news say nothing about a body matching Rikumichi's description during the Shiranpuri case later.<ref>Volume 58</ref> Both officers are in the homicide division, and they would probably be called to investigate any case involving a gunshot to the head, even if looked like a suicide. Akai or one of the following FBI agents either transferred the body to their vehicle or drove Rikumichi's car with the body in it to somewhere less conspicuous.

==Conan and Akai's preparations: Setting up the phone trick and Akai's body double==

In the hospital during the FBI planning meeting, Akai makes a show of taking Conan's phone (not the one with Rikumichi's fingerprints) with his RIGHT hand.<ref name=602p10>Manga Volume 58 File 5 pg 10-11, Last Resort</ref> It has to be his right hand because that's the one Rikumichi used to handle the phone,<ref name=597p14/> Akai would normally handle the phone with the other hand because he is left handed. Jodie has this scene imprinted in her head. Meanwhile, either Conan or Akai steals Jodie's phone and causes it to malfunction,<ref name=607p15>Manga Volume 58 file 10 pg 14, Camel's Past</ref> perhaps by dropping it in water like Conan did to Rikumichi's,<ref name=598p14>Manga Volume 58 File 1 pg 14, Pursuit and...</ref> so Conan has the opportunity to loan Jodie the one with Rikumichi's fingerprints on it.<ref name=607p15/> Jodie will assume it was the one Akai handled and be fooled because Conan's phones are identical.<ref name=609pg10>Manga Volume 59 File 1 page 10, Wedge of Steel</ref> 
Sometime before Akai and Rena's meeting, Akai and Conan will abscond with and prepare Rikumichi's body to look somewhat like Akai. The time frame for this could be the night before the strategy meeting after the fake death plan was devised or after Rena was returned to the Black Organization but before she called to meet with Akai.

==Rena and Akai's preparations: Faking the gunshots for the camera==
Before Rena is returned to the Black Organization, she and Akai discuss the timing and the location of the fake gunshots. They decide on the lung and forehead for reasons [[#Rena uses psychological traps to trick Gin|explained later]]. Akai prepares fake blood packets, [[wiki:Squib_(explosive)|small detonators]] for those blood packets, a small remote to detonate them with, and protectors that go between the skin and the detonators. Rena takes [[wiki:Blank (cartridge)|blank cartridges]], likely from the FBI or Yukiko, and hides them on her person since she will be under watch and may be searched by the Black Organization. She might carry a few different calibers for different models of handguns.

A setup like this already happened before in the Kaito Kid and Black Pearl case with [[Sonoko Suzuki]]'s mother and the magician [[List of minor recurring manga characters#Kazumi Sanada|Kazumi Sanada]]<ref name=16f8>Manga Volume 16 file 8</ref>, so it isn’t unprecedented.

Similarly, on the Bell Tree Express, Yukiko brought a special vest for faking Shiho's death.<ref name="823p11">Manga [[Volume 78]], File 6 (823), pg 11: "Mystery Train (Releasing Smoke)"</ref> The vest had several of the components that might have been necessary for faking Akai's death: a bullet-proof vest with a fake blood releasing contraption to make realistic looking gunshots. Yukiko may have been able to supply similar theatrical components to Akai and Kir before she was returned to the Organization the following day.

==Akai and Rena's meeting==
With Akai, Kir, and Conan's prep work done, the FBI plan to return Rena with the vans takes place and Rena successfully returns to the Black Organization, and as predicted is tasked with killing Akai right away.<ref name=606p15>Manga Volume 58, File 9, pg 15: "Friday the 13th"</ref> Akai gets the expected call from Rena. He stops James Black from calling Jodie to prevent the other FBI from interfering with the plan.<ref name=607p12>Manga Volume 58, File 10, pg 12: "Camel's Past"</ref> Akai heads out after loading Rikumichi's body in the backseat of his truck. His model truck probably has a backseat/extended cab because it has rear side windows. He could have also loaded Rikumichi's body in the bed of his truck which was covered<ref name=608p11/> and moved the body to the backseat when he reached Raiha pass before meeting Kir. Meanwhile, Conan passes the phone with Rikumichi's fingerprints off to Jodie.<ref name=607p15/> 
At Raiha Pass, Akai scouts out ahead and drives in from the other side so the car is on the side of the guard rail that has the drop.<ref name=608p11>Manga Volume 58, File 11, pg 11: "Spell of Magic"</ref> Basically, he plans on scrambling out of the detonating truck just like Camel did earlier when returning Rena to the Black Organization.<ref name=604p3>Manga Volume 58, File 7, pg 3: "Older Sister and Younger Brother"</ref> He needs to be on the side with guard rail and the drop for it to work. {{clearleft}}[[Image:Episode 504 German.jpg‎|thumb|left|150px|Akai keeps his right hand hidden in his pocket while Kir shoots him.]]

===Blood packet placement and Akai's strange behavior while getting shot===
When Rena goes to shoot Akai, Akai keeps his right hand in his pocket during the whole ordeal.<ref name=609p2-4>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pgs 2-4: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> That is unnatural, especially after having been shot once; it is more natural to have one hand cover the wound while putting the other in front to protect himself. Akai couldn't do that however, because he had to push the detonator for the blood packets. The shot to the head was above Akai's hat line which makes it possible for a fake blood packet to fit under there.<ref name=609p4>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 4: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> As for the bleeding from the mouth, Akai could have bit open a small packet he was carrying inside his mouth or bit his tongue.<ref name=609p4/>

===Disappearing blood trails indicate Akai's body was switched out===

After Rena shoots Akai and he falls down in the seat, Akai's face has a blood trail running down it;<ref name=609p4/> later after Rena planted the bomb, the lower half of Akai's face and his body is visible, yet the blood trail is gone. Akai's head is also positioned differently.<ref name=609p5>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 5: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> There is no reason for Rena to wipe the blood off Akai's face, nor is she shown doing so. This is direct proof the body was somehow tampered with or switched by someone other than Kir. Furthermore, the body without the blood trail from the mouth has dimples at the corners of the mouth, something that Rikumichi has but Akai does not.

===Rena uses psychological traps to trick Gin===
Rena used psychological traps to trick [[Gin]] into overlooking that she and Akai could have predicted enough details of the assassination plan to concoct a trick. Rena manipulates her conversations with Gin by suggesting possible courses of action and making requests which she already knows will definitely be rejected by him. These rejected requests subconsciously manipulate Gin into falsely assuming that Rena had wanted or planned on having things as she requested and had not anticipated his demands. The result is that Gin fallaciously believes that he was in control and Rena could not have plotted anything in advance. 
The psychological trap was used when Gin told Rena how she was going to kill Akai<ref name=607p3>Manga Volume 58, File 10, pg 3: "Camel's Past"</ref>. Rena suggested alternate options like Gin and company would surround Akai to shoot him, and that she would like some extra time to prepare - both requests Gin denied.<ref name=607p3/> 

Additionally, Rena and Akai planned another psychological trap for Gin with the placement of the gunshots. Rena and Akai decided to pick a fatal- but not quickly so- lung shot for the site of the first “shot”. Rena will then say “that’s good enough, he will die quickly anyway”, but Gin will be sure to object and order her to finish him in the head where it’s certain.<ref name=609p2>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 2: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> Rena will then deliver the coup de grâce that Gin ordered. Of course, Rena and Akai knew in advance Gin would ask for a headshot in these circumstances because Gin would not want to leave anything up to chance. The trap is forcing Gin to ask for the shot specifically by himself because it is hard to escape from the fallacious thought that "this couldn’t be planned in advance because I alone specifically asked Kir to shoot Akai in the head with no forewarning."<ref name=702p2-3>Manga Volume 67, File 6, pgs 2-3: "The Bomber's Aim"</ref>

===Conveniently timed police arrive which allows Akai and Kir to avoid additional scrutiny===

After Rena delivers the shots, she is interrupted by police heading her way.<ref name=609p5/> They were probably called on purpose to force Gin to order Kir to leave and not examine things more closely. Kir walks over to the hood of Akai's truck to prepare the bomb which means the inside of the truck is not visible.<ref name=609p5/> Akai switches places with Rikumichi's body at this time. Kir places the bomb by the already switched body and leaves, which gives Akai more time to maneuver without the camera watching him. He left his phone in Rikumichi's pocket, and he also put the right hand of the body in the pocket as well to make sure Rikumichi’s right-hand fingerprints survive and can be tested later against Conan’s phone for a match to complete the trick.<ref name=609p6>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 6: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> The bomb has the additional effect of destroying Rikumichi’s face and obscuring the powder burn from the self inflicted gunshot wound.

The identity of the accomplices who would have timed the accident is unclear at this point. Agasa and Conan were tied up with the [[Clash of Red and Black|Shiranpuri case]] at the time, so someone else must have been involved. The FBI we have met so far don't seem to know Akai faked his death, so it would have to be someone else whom Akai trusts. Yukiko, who was shown to be working with Akai later, is one possibility. It is also possible the assistants are the two subordinates whom Akai asked to follow Yukiko and the Detective Boys in the [[Secret of the Tohto Film Development Studio|movie pre-screening murder case]].

==Conan checks his phone to see if the plan worked==
After Jodie goes to the police to verify the fingerprints on the phone she borrowed from Conan match the body's prints, she returns his phone and Conan checks it right away. Conan notes the serial number is different which means that the police kept the original phone as evidence, and thus the plan was a success.<ref name=609p15>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 15: Wedge of Steel</ref> The reason for Conan's inspection could be that should something not work out properly, the plan would change so that Rena really would kill Akai. If Akai really died, Rikumichi's fingerprints on the phone would not match the dead Akai's and the police would return Conan's original phone. Conan is relieved to see the police kept his phone as evidence and gave him a new phone meaning everything did go according to plan. Later when [[Eisuke Hondou|Eisuke]] tells Conan "it sounds like there is a heavy atmosphere over the FBI, like someone died," Conan smiles to himself and thinks "that is OK" because Conan knows the fake death plan succeeded.<ref name=621p16>Manga Volume 60, File 2, pg 16: Eisuke's Confession</ref>

==Akai keeps the plan secret from his FBI comrades to fool the Black Organization==
The reason the other FBI, including Jodie, were left out of the fake death plan is the same reason why the FBI were also left out of the plan to return Rena with the three vans.<ref name=605p4>Manga Volume 58, File 8, pg 4: Wedge of Steel</ref> Conan, Akai, and Rena needed everyone to react realistically to Akai's death. This wound up being a good idea because Vermouth checked out Jodie and James Black.<ref name=609p14>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 14: Wedge of Steel</ref>

==Authorial device inspired arguments==
Although not strictly "in-universe" evidence, inductive arguments can be made in light of Aoyama Gosho's recurring literary devices and authorial tendencies.

===No multi-case character has ever died in Detective Conan===
Excluding than Akai's apparent death, [[Gosho Aoyama]] has never killed off any character who has been in more than one case, much less a protagonist. The closest situation was the flashback to the death of [[Jinpei Matsuda]] in "The Trembling Police Headquarters" arc,<ref name=Matsuda>Manga Volume 36 Files 5-11, Volume 37 File 1: Trembling Police Headquarters</ref> but it was stated he died at the outset. Gosho Aoyama has had 650 chapters to set a precedent.

If the Black Organization looked into the police report they might discover the discrepancy, but it is unlikely they would endanger their secrecy sniffing about a police investigation when they saw Akai killed in front of them. One of the most popular fan theories is that Akai faked his death with Rena Mizunashi's and [[Conan]]'s help. This theory article compiles clues and logical arguments that some fans believe show how Akai could have plausibly faked his death.

The basic summary of the plan to fake Shuichi Akai's death is that Rena Mizunashi will meet Akai and will pretend to shoot him. After the events of [[Clash of Red and Black]], [[Gin]] is suspicious of how easy it was to recover [[Rena Mizunashi]] from the FBI and that [[Shuichi Akai]] didn't make a strong move. Gin thinks Akai is still hiding something and that doubt is relayed to the boss who plans a test of Kir's loyalty. Gin meets with Kir and conveys [[anokata|the boss's]] ultimatum: Kir must kill Akai in order to regain the Black Organization's trust. Akai and Kir meet at Raiha pass where Rena shoots Akai twice and blows up the truck with his body inside; however several abnormalities surrounding the circumstances of Akai's death invite the possibility that Akai faked his death with [[Conan]] and Mizunashi Rena's help.

After the death of Black Organization agent [[Rikumichi Kusuda]], [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Conan]] went to talk to [[Rena Mizunashi]] after getting [[Eisuke Hondou]] to "wake her up". They speak with her about sneaking her back into the [[Black Organization]], received her promise to cooperate, and they began to formulate a plan on how to reimplant Rena without the Black Organization rejecting her. At that point, Akai figured that the return Rena plan would make the Black Organization's recovery of Rena seem suspiciously easy, so the Black Organization wouldn't trust Rena and would require her to do some task to regain the boss's trust. Akai, who has experience in the Black Organization and knows how they think<ref name=600p7>Manga File 600 pg 7, All or nothing...</ref>, guessed the requested test of loyalty might be to kill him, so he decided to prepare appropriately to be safe. This would be the time frame when the plan to fake Akai's death was formulated.

At their disposal were three important articles: One is Rikumichi's body which will be used as Akai's body double. Presumably the [[FBI]] kept the body and the car for investigation because [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]], [[Wataru Takagi|Detective Takagi]], and the news say nothing about a body matching Rikumichi's description during the Shiranpuri case later.<ref>Volume 58</ref> Both officers are in the homicide division, and they would probably be called to investigate any case involving a gunshot to the head, even if looked like a suicide. Jodie has this scene imprinted in her head. Meanwhile, either Conan or Akai steals Jodie's phone and causes it to malfunction,<ref name=607p15>Manga Volume 58 file 10 pg 14, Camel's Past</ref> perhaps by dropping it in water like Conan did to Rikumichi's,<ref name=598p14>Manga Volume 58 File 1 pg 14, Pursuit and...</ref> so Conan has the opportunity to loan Jodie the one with Rikumichi's fingerprints on it.<ref name=607p15/> Jodie will assume it was the one Akai handled and be fooled because Conan's phones are identical.<ref name=609pg10>Manga Volume 59 File 1 page 10, Wedge of Steel</ref> 
Sometime before Akai and Rena's meeting, Akai and Conan will abscond with and prepare Rikumichi's body to look somewhat like Akai. The time frame for this could be the night before the strategy meeting after the fake death plan was devised or after Rena was returned to the Black Organization but before she called to meet with Akai.

==Rena and Akai's preparations: Faking the gunshots for the camera==
Before Rena is returned to the Black Organization, she and Akai discuss the timing and the location of the fake gunshots. They decide on the lung and forehead for reasons [[#Rena uses psychological traps to trick Gin|explained later]]. Akai prepares fake blood packets, [[wiki:Squib_(explosive)|small detonators]] for those blood packets, a small remote to detonate them with, and protectors that go between the skin and the detonators. Rena takes [[wiki:Blank (cartridge)|blank cartridges]], likely from the FBI or Yukiko, and hides them on her person since she will be under watch and may be searched by the Black Organization. She might carry a few different calibers for different models of handguns.

A setup like this already happened before in the Kaito Kid and Black Pearl case with [[Sonoko Suzuki]]'s mother and the magician [[List of minor recurring manga characters#Kazumi Sanada|Kazumi Sanada]]<ref name=16f8>Manga Volume 16 file 8</ref>, so it isn’t unprecedented.

His model truck probably has a backseat/extended cab because it has rear side windows. He could have also loaded Rikumichi's body in the bed of his truck which was covered<ref name=608p11/> and moved the body to the backseat when he reached Raiha pass before meeting Kir. Meanwhile, Conan passes the phone with Rikumichi's fingerprints off to Jodie.<ref name=607p15/>

Akai couldn't do that however, because he had to push the detonator for the blood packets. The shot to the head was above Akai's hat line which makes it possible for a fake blood packet to fit under there.<ref name=609p4>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 4: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> As for the bleeding from the mouth, Akai could have bit open a small packet he was carrying inside his mouth or bit his tongue.<ref name=609p4/>

After Rena shoots Akai and he falls down in the seat, Akai's face has a blood trail running down it;<ref name=609p4/> later after Rena planted the bomb, the lower half of Akai's face and his body is visible, yet the blood trail is gone. Akai's head is also positioned differently.<ref name=609p5>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 5: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> There is no reason for Rena to wipe the blood off Akai's face, nor is she shown doing so. This is direct proof the body was somehow tampered with or switched by someone other than Kir. Furthermore, the body without the blood trail from the mouth has dimples at the corners of the mouth, something that Rikumichi has but Akai does not.

===Rena uses psychological traps to trick Gin===
Rena used psychological traps to trick [[Gin]] into overlooking that she and Akai could have predicted enough details of the assassination plan to concoct a trick. Rena manipulates her conversations with Gin by suggesting possible courses of action and making requests which she already knows will definitely be rejected by him. These rejected requests subconsciously manipulate Gin into falsely assuming that Rena had wanted or planned on having things as she requested and had not anticipated his demands. The result is that Gin fallaciously believes that he was in control and Rena could not have plotted anything in advance. 
The psychological trap was used when Gin told Rena how she was going to kill Akai<ref name=607p3>Manga Volume 58, File 10, pg 3: "Camel's Past"</ref>. Rena suggested alternate options like Gin and company would surround Akai to shoot him, and that she would like some extra time to prepare - both requests Gin denied.<ref name=607p3/> 

Additionally, Rena and Akai planned another psychological trap for Gin with the placement of the gunshots. Rena and Akai decided to pick a fatal- but not quickly so- lung shot for the site of the first “shot”. Rena will then say “that’s good enough, he will die quickly anyway”, but Gin will be sure to object and order her to finish him in the head where it’s certain.<ref name=609p2>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 2: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> Rena will then deliver the coup de grâce that Gin ordered. Of course, Rena and Akai knew in advance Gin would ask for a headshot in these circumstances because Gin would not want to leave anything up to chance. The trap is forcing Gin to ask for the shot specifically by himself because it is hard to escape from the fallacious thought that "this couldn’t be planned in advance because I alone specifically asked Kir to shoot Akai in the head with no forewarning."<ref name=702p2-3>Manga Volume 67, File 6, pgs 2-3: "The Bomber's Aim"</ref>

After Rena delivers the shots, she is interrupted by police heading her way.<ref name=609p5/> They were probably called on purpose to force Gin to order Kir to leave and not examine things more closely. Kir walks over to the hood of Akai's truck to prepare the bomb which means the inside of the truck is not visible.<ref name=609p5/> Akai switches places with Rikumichi's body at this time. Kir places the bomb by the already switched body and leaves, which gives Akai more time to maneuver without the camera watching him. He left his phone in Rikumichi's pocket, and he also put the right hand of the body in the pocket as well to make sure Rikumichi’s right-hand fingerprints survive and can be tested later against Conan’s phone for a match to complete the trick.<ref name=609p6>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 6: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> The bomb has the additional effect of destroying Rikumichi’s face and obscuring the powder burn from the self inflicted gunshot wound.

The identity of the accomplices who would have timed the accident is unclear at this point. Agasa and Conan were tied up with the [[Clash of Red and Black|Shiranpuri case]] at the time, so someone else must have been involved. The FBI we have met so far don't seem to know Akai faked his death, so it would have to be someone else whom Akai trusts. Yukiko, who was shown to be working with Akai later, is one possibility. It is also possible the assistants are the two subordinates whom Akai asked to follow Yukiko and the Detective Boys in the [[Secret of the Tohto Film Development Studio|movie pre-screening murder case]].

==Conan checks his phone to see if the plan worked==
After Jodie goes to the police to verify the fingerprints on the phone she borrowed from Conan match the body's prints, she returns his phone and Conan checks it right away. Conan notes the serial number is different which means that the police kept the original phone as evidence, and thus the plan was a success.<ref name=609p15>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 15: Wedge of Steel</ref> The reason for Conan's inspection could be that should something not work out properly, the plan would change so that Rena really would kill Akai. If Akai really died, Rikumichi's fingerprints on the phone would not match the dead Akai's and the police would return Conan's original phone. Conan is relieved to see the police kept his phone as evidence and gave him a new phone meaning everything did go according to plan. Later when [[Eisuke Hondou|Eisuke]] tells Conan "it sounds like there is a heavy atmosphere over the FBI, like someone died," Conan smiles to himself and thinks "that is OK" because Conan knows the fake death plan succeeded.<ref name=621p16>Manga Volume 60, File 2, pg 16: Eisuke's Confession</ref>

She will think they are Akai's and when she goes to validate the identity of the body with the police, it will match Rikumichi's fingerprints and she will be fooled into thinking Akai died.

==Background==
After the events of [[Clash of Red and Black]], [[Gin]] is suspicious of how easy it was to recover [[Rena Mizunashi]] from the FBI and that [[Shuichi Akai]] didn't make a strong move. Gin thinks Akai is still hiding something and that doubt is relayed to the boss who plans a test of Kir's loyalty. Gin meets with Kir and conveys [[anokata|the boss's]] ultimatum: Kir must kill Akai in order to regain the Black Organization's trust. Akai and Kir meet at Raiha pass where Rena shoots Akai twice and blows up the truck with his body inside; however several abnormalities surrounding the circumstances of Akai's death invite the possibility that Akai faked his death with [[Conan]] and Mizunashi Rena's help.

==Initial Planning==

After the death of Black Organization agent [[Rikumichi Kusuda]], [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Conan]] went to talk to [[Rena Mizunashi]] after getting [[Eisuke Hondou]] to "wake her up". They speak with her about sneaking her back into the [[Black Organization]], received her promise to cooperate, and they began to formulate a plan on how to reimplant Rena without the Black Organization rejecting her. At that point, Akai figured that the return Rena plan would make the Black Organization's recovery of Rena seem suspiciously easy, so the Black Organization wouldn't trust Rena and would require her to do some task to regain the boss's trust. Akai, who has experience in the Black Organization and knows how they think<ref name=600p7>Manga File 600 pg 7, All or nothing...</ref>, guessed the requested test of loyalty might be to kill him, so he decided to prepare appropriately to be safe. This would be the time frame when the plan to fake Akai's death was formulated.

At their disposal were three important articles: One is Rikumichi's body which will be used as Akai's body double. Presumably the [[FBI]] kept the body and the car for investigation because [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]], [[Wataru Takagi|Detective Takagi]], and the news say nothing about a body matching Rikumichi's description during the Shiranpuri case later.<ref>Volume 58</ref> Both officers are in the homicide division, and they would probably be called to investigate any case involving a gunshot to the head, even if looked like a suicide. Akai or one of the following FBI agents either transferred the body to their vehicle or drove Rikumichi's car with the body in it to somewhere less conspicuous.

==Conan and Akai's preparations: Setting up the phone trick and Akai's body double==

In the hospital during the FBI planning meeting, Akai makes a show of taking Conan's phone (not the one with Rikumichi's fingerprints) with his RIGHT hand.<ref name=602p10>Manga Volume 58 File 5 pg 10-11, Last Resort</ref> It has to be his right hand because that's the one Rikumichi used to handle the phone,<ref name=597p14/> Akai would normally handle the phone with the other hand because he is left handed. Jodie has this scene imprinted in her head. Meanwhile, either Conan or Akai steals Jodie's phone and causes it to malfunction,<ref name=607p15>Manga Volume 58 file 10 pg 14, Camel's Past</ref> perhaps by dropping it in water like Conan did to Rikumichi's,<ref name=598p14>Manga Volume 58 File 1 pg 14, Pursuit and...</ref> so Conan has the opportunity to loan Jodie the one with Rikumichi's fingerprints on it.<ref name=607p15/> Jodie will assume it was the one Akai handled and be fooled because Conan's phones are identical.<ref name=609pg10>Manga Volume 59 File 1 page 10, Wedge of Steel</ref> 
Sometime before Akai and Rena's meeting, Akai and Conan will abscond with and prepare Rikumichi's body to look somewhat like Akai. The time frame for this could be the night before the strategy meeting after the fake death plan was devised or after Rena was returned to the Black Organization but before she called to meet with Akai.

==Rena and Akai's preparations: Faking the gunshots for the camera==
Before Rena is returned to the Black Organization, she and Akai discuss the timing and the location of the fake gunshots. They decide on the lung and forehead for reasons [[#Rena uses psychological traps to trick Gin|explained later]]. Akai prepares fake blood packets, [[wiki:Squib_(explosive)|small detonators]] for those blood packets, a small remote to detonate them with, and protectors that go between the skin and the detonators. Rena takes [[wiki:Blank (cartridge)|blank cartridges]], likely from the FBI or Yukiko, and hides them on her person since she will be under watch and may be searched by the Black Organization. She might carry a few different calibers for different models of handguns.

A setup like this already happened before in the Kaito Kid and Black Pearl case with [[Sonoko Suzuki]]'s mother and the magician [[List of minor recurring manga characters#Kazumi Sanada|Kazumi Sanada]]<ref name=16f8>Manga Volume 16 file 8</ref>, so it isn’t unprecedented.

Similarly, on the Bell Tree Express, Yukiko brought a special vest for faking Shiho's death.<ref name="823p11">Manga [[Volume 78]], File 6 (823), pg 11: "Mystery Train (Releasing Smoke)"</ref> The vest had several of the components that might have been necessary for faking Akai's death: a bullet-proof vest with a fake blood releasing contraption to make realistic looking gunshots. Yukiko may have been able to supply similar theatrical components to Akai and Kir before she was returned to the Organization the following day.

==Akai and Rena's meeting==
With Akai, Kir, and Conan's prep work done, the FBI plan to return Rena with the vans takes place and Rena successfully returns to the Black Organization, and as predicted is tasked with killing Akai right away.<ref name=606p15>Manga Volume 58, File 9, pg 15: "Friday the 13th"</ref> Akai gets the expected call from Rena. He stops James Black from calling Jodie to prevent the other FBI from interfering with the plan.<ref name=607p12>Manga Volume 58, File 10, pg 12: "Camel's Past"</ref> Akai heads out after loading Rikumichi's body in the backseat of his truck. His model truck probably has a backseat/extended cab because it has rear side windows. He could have also loaded Rikumichi's body in the bed of his truck which was covered<ref name=608p11/> and moved the body to the backseat when he reached Raiha pass before meeting Kir. Meanwhile, Conan passes the phone with Rikumichi's fingerprints off to Jodie.<ref name=607p15/>

===Blood packet placement and Akai's strange behavior while getting shot===
When Rena goes to shoot Akai, Akai keeps his right hand in his pocket during the whole ordeal.<ref name=609p2-4>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pgs 2-4: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> That is unnatural, especially after having been shot once; it is more natural to have one hand cover the wound while putting the other in front to protect himself. Akai couldn't do that however, because he had to push the detonator for the blood packets. The shot to the head was above Akai's hat line which makes it possible for a fake blood packet to fit under there.<ref name=609p4>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 4: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> As for the bleeding from the mouth, Akai could have bit open a small packet he was carrying inside his mouth or bit his tongue.<ref name=609p4/>

===Disappearing blood trails indicate Akai's body was switched out===

After Rena shoots Akai and he falls down in the seat, Akai's face has a blood trail running down it;<ref name=609p4/> later after Rena planted the bomb, the lower half of Akai's face and his body is visible, yet the blood trail is gone. Akai's head is also positioned differently.<ref name=609p5>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 5: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> There is no reason for Rena to wipe the blood off Akai's face, nor is she shown doing so. This is direct proof the body was somehow tampered with or switched by someone other than Kir. Furthermore, the body without the blood trail from the mouth has dimples at the corners of the mouth, something that Rikumichi has but Akai does not.

===Rena uses psychological traps to trick Gin===
Rena used psychological traps to trick [[Gin]] into overlooking that she and Akai could have predicted enough details of the assassination plan to concoct a trick. Rena manipulates her conversations with Gin by suggesting possible courses of action and making requests which she already knows will definitely be rejected by him. These rejected requests subconsciously manipulate Gin into falsely assuming that Rena had wanted or planned on having things as she requested and had not anticipated his demands. The result is that Gin fallaciously believes that he was in control and Rena could not have plotted anything in advance. 
The psychological trap was used when Gin told Rena how she was going to kill Akai<ref name=607p3>Manga Volume 58, File 10, pg 3: "Camel's Past"</ref>. Rena suggested alternate options like Gin and company would surround Akai to shoot him, and that she would like some extra time to prepare - both requests Gin denied.<ref name=607p3/> 

Additionally, Rena and Akai planned another psychological trap for Gin with the placement of the gunshots. Rena and Akai decided to pick a fatal- but not quickly so- lung shot for the site of the first “shot”. Rena will then say “that’s good enough, he will die quickly anyway”, but Gin will be sure to object and order her to finish him in the head where it’s certain.<ref name=609p2>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 2: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> Rena will then deliver the coup de grâce that Gin ordered. Of course, Rena and Akai knew in advance Gin would ask for a headshot in these circumstances because Gin would not want to leave anything up to chance. The trap is forcing Gin to ask for the shot specifically by himself because it is hard to escape from the fallacious thought that "this couldn’t be planned in advance because I alone specifically asked Kir to shoot Akai in the head with no forewarning."<ref name=702p2-3>Manga Volume 67, File 6, pgs 2-3: "The Bomber's Aim"</ref>

===Conveniently timed police arrive which allows Akai and Kir to avoid additional scrutiny===

After Rena delivers the shots, she is interrupted by police heading her way.<ref name=609p5/> They were probably called on purpose to force Gin to order Kir to leave and not examine things more closely. Kir walks over to the hood of Akai's truck to prepare the bomb which means the inside of the truck is not visible.<ref name=609p5/> Akai switches places with Rikumichi's body at this time. Kir places the bomb by the already switched body and leaves, which gives Akai more time to maneuver without the camera watching him. He left his phone in Rikumichi's pocket, and he also put the right hand of the body in the pocket as well to make sure Rikumichi’s right-hand fingerprints survive and can be tested later against Conan’s phone for a match to complete the trick.<ref name=609p6>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 6: "Wedge of Steel"</ref> The bomb has the additional effect of destroying Rikumichi’s face and obscuring the powder burn from the self inflicted gunshot wound.

The identity of the accomplices who would have timed the accident is unclear at this point. Agasa and Conan were tied up with the [[Clash of Red and Black|Shiranpuri case]] at the time, so someone else must have been involved. The FBI we have met so far don't seem to know Akai faked his death, so it would have to be someone else whom Akai trusts. Yukiko, who was shown to be working with Akai later, is one possibility. It is also possible the assistants are the two subordinates whom Akai asked to follow Yukiko and the Detective Boys in the [[Secret of the Tohto Film Development Studio|movie pre-screening murder case]].

==Conan checks his phone to see if the plan worked==
After Jodie goes to the police to verify the fingerprints on the phone she borrowed from Conan match the body's prints, she returns his phone and Conan checks it right away. Conan notes the serial number is different which means that the police kept the original phone as evidence, and thus the plan was a success.<ref name=609p15>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 15: Wedge of Steel</ref> The reason for Conan's inspection could be that should something not work out properly, the plan would change so that Rena really would kill Akai. If Akai really died, Rikumichi's fingerprints on the phone would not match the dead Akai's and the police would return Conan's original phone. Conan is relieved to see the police kept his phone as evidence and gave him a new phone meaning everything did go according to plan. Later when [[Eisuke Hondou|Eisuke]] tells Conan "it sounds like there is a heavy atmosphere over the FBI, like someone died," Conan smiles to himself and thinks "that is OK" because Conan knows the fake death plan succeeded.<ref name=621p16>Manga Volume 60, File 2, pg 16: Eisuke's Confession</ref>

==Akai keeps the plan secret from his FBI comrades to fool the Black Organization==
The reason the other FBI, including Jodie, were left out of the fake death plan is the same reason why the FBI were also left out of the plan to return Rena with the three vans.<ref name=605p4>Manga Volume 58, File 8, pg 4: Wedge of Steel</ref> Conan, Akai, and Rena needed everyone to react realistically to Akai's death. Although not strictly "in-universe" evidence, inductive arguments can be made in light of Aoyama Gosho's recurring literary devices and authorial tendencies.

===No multi-case character has ever died in Detective Conan===
Excluding than Akai's apparent death, [[Gosho Aoyama]] has never killed off any character who has been in more than one case, much less a protagonist. The closest situation was the flashback to the death of [[Jinpei Matsuda]] in "The Trembling Police Headquarters" arc,<ref name=Matsuda>Manga Volume 36 Files 5-11, Volume 37 File 1: Trembling Police Headquarters</ref> but it was stated he died at the outset. Gosho Aoyama has had 650 chapters to set a precedent.

If Rikumichi Kusuda committed suicide, he would shoot himself in the head, even if his body was to be burnt the evidence would remain.
Around the time they stopped receiving intel from Kusuda, another person was shot in the head and then burnt. They were able to identify the body as the fingerprints matched those found on Conan's phone. Why were they able to get a fingerprints from a burnt corpse? Vermouth claims that "he's that kind of guy" meaning that he would shoot a shotgun with one hand while the other in his fireproof trouser pocket. Bourbon believes that Shuichi Akai intended, the hand to found, so that the fingerprints could be compared and confirm his death. Vermouth claims that the video that was secretly recorded, from Kir's hidden cam, show that this wasn't staged; She believes that those lines that was spoken by Akai can not be scripted. Though Bourbons full reasoning has yet to be revealed, Bourbon is very aware that Conan plays a big role in facade.

==Problems with this theory==
The gunshot in Rikumichi’s body is through his temple,<ref name=598p16>Manga Volume 58 File 1 pg 16, Pursuit and...</ref> but when Akai “died”, he received a gunshot directly to his forehead from the center. Also Rikumichi didn’t have a lung shot. The second shot could be added later post mortem, but the coroner might be able to tell even with the burning. Only Rena and the Black Organization know that Akai was shot from the front. Only the FBI, Conan, and possibly Rena if told later know that Rikumichi shot himself through the temple. If the Black Organization looked into the police report they might discover the discrepancy, but it is unlikely they would endanger their secrecy sniffing about a police investigation when they saw Akai killed in front of them. Note that the police never mentioned any specifics about the body; they just said there were a many mysteries about it.<ref name=609p12>Manga Volume 59, File 1, pg 12: Wedge of Steel</ref>

The second and perhaps more serious problem is using blanks at a close range. Although blanks lack the bullet part, the weapon will still discharge a cloud of hot gas called [[wiki:muzzle blast|muzzle blast]] that will burn at close range. Also, if the blank has a wad of paper or the like replacing the bullet or if there is shrapnel in the gun, it can be propelled out at high speed and be lethally driven into the body at close ranges. “Crimped blanks” exist which lack a potentially lethal wad, but that would not prevent the muzzle blast. It’s possible that Gosho Aoyama has ignored the actual dangers of blanks for dramatic license; however, the presence of a burn scar on [[Scar Akai]]'s right side of the face could suggest muzzle blasts were actually considered (and if the theory about Scar Akai being another person in disguise is considered, it could also suggest the one preparing the disguise thinks Akai was shot with blanks, therefore having muzzle blast burns in the places where he was shot.)

Some twenty years ago, when Jodie was still just a little girl, [[Vermouth]] killed her parents, who had been working on the [[Black Organization]] for the FBI. Vermouth was surprised to find her in her house, and after Jodie had asked what was going on, Vermouth told her to wait by her father until he woke up, and that "a secret makes a woman woman". She then set the house ablaze, thus destroying any evidence that she had been there, along with the corpses of Jodie's parents and any records about the Black Organization.

Fortunately, Jodie had decided to run down the street to the store to buy her father some orange juice, and had thus survived. She was put under protection by the FBI, although she declined the Witness Protection Program, and eventually became an FBI agent herself under the tutelage and patronage of [[James Black]]. The only remaining memento from her past is the set of glasses she wears, which had originally belonged to her father.

== Plot overview ==
===Plot timeline===
Jodie appears around the same time as Vermouth as Ran's new English teacher at Teitan High under the name of "Jodie Saintemillion". She comes off as somewhat strange, and refers to Conan as "Cool Guy", which caused fans to believe that she knew his secret. (In fact, she now knows he's an incredible detective, but it is unclear if she knows his true identity). She is noted for often using the phrase of her enemy, Vermouth ('A secret makes a woman woman'). In Episode 226-227, Jodie, after watching Conan suspiciously, informs someone over the phone that she has found their target, whom she refers to as "Rotten Apple".

First indications of Jodie's FBI training are shown during the confrontation with the bus hijackers. She stealthily turns on the safety to one of the hijacker's guns, while knocking him down thus he cannot shoot it when he attempts to fire at her. She appears later in Episodes 271-272 and gives Conan information that allows him to solve the case. In Episodes 277-278, she is investigated by Conan and Heiji, both believing her to be Vermouth in disguise, as she pretends to not know japanese despite being perfectly fluent, and even helps them solve a case in the same episode.

It is not until her personal confrontation with Vermouth that Jodie's past and true identity as an FBI agent is revealed, as well as the real reason she's in Japan and the person she's looking for. She is tracking down Vermouth, and after a brief confrontation with her, Jodie is rescued by Conan and her colleague [[Shuichi Akai]]. Following this, she offers Ai a place in the Witness Protection Program, but Haibara declines. She does not appear again until when she helps Conan prevent an assassination plot of a politician orchestrated by the Black Organization and the subsequent capture and hospitalization of the Black Organization member, Kir.

Jodie has been heavily involved in the Black Organization arc in Episodes 492-504, which has involved the Black Organization and the FBI. The death of her partner, Akai, takes a very emotional toll on her. As it later turns out, they used to be lovers before Akai infiltrated the Black Organization by dating [[Akemi Miyano]], with whom he eventually became more intensely involved. Still, despite their breakup Jodie does maintain strong feelings for him.<ref name=Akai>Manga Chapter 677: The Fated Individual</ref>. [[Shuichi Akai]] and Jodie are co-workers that came to Japan as part of an FBI unit led by James Black in pursuit of Vermouth and the Black Organization. While their relationship is mostly professional in the current-timeline, the two were romantically involved four to five years prior. When Akai was given the mission to earn the trust of and become a mole inside the Black Organization, he got close to Akemi Miyano for the purpose of using her inside connections. Despite his original intentions, however, Akai genuinely fell in love with Akemi, leading him to break up with a blindsided Jodie. Akai calmly explained his actions to her by saying, “To be able to love two women at the same time…it’s not that handy a personality.” While the two were no longer lovers, Jodie's feelings for Akai never swayed. Despite an end to their relationship, the two continued on as colleagues until the fateful day when Akai was killed. While his death was a tragic loss for all those in the FBI, Jodie took it especially hard. When first hearing the news, she was in complete denial that Akai could die. Despite her frantic attempts at proving Akai was alive, however, Jodie came to the cold hard truth on her own, bringing the agent to tears.

Since the incidents of Clash of Red and Black, Akai has become an understandably sore topic for Jodie. On one occasion when conversation about drinks led Camel to mention Akai's love for Bourbon alcohol and how his presence would have been helpful, Jodie furiously tells him that Shuichi Akai is dead and he should never mention him again. She storms away from her friends. In addition to an inability to cope with this loss, her thought process has become seemingly more aggressive and risky, something that was unheard of during her long, careful investigation of Vermouth. Jodie's mindset has been especially fixated since her encounter with [[Scar Akai]]. When Camel mentioned that the sudden reappearance of Akai could be a trap set up by the organization, Jodie refused to accept the possibility of such a scenario.

Although [[James Black]] is in charge of the FBI agents stationed in Japan, his relationship with Jodie couldn’t be further from the usual boss and subordinate stereotype. In fact, during several occasions, Jodie takes over the role of giving out orders while James serves as her chauffeur. <ref>[[Volume 49#File 502 - A New Objective|Volume 49, File 502: "A New Objective", Page 11]]</ref> While there are many possibilities to explain such an arrangement, such as her strong personality and supposedly bad driving skills, James does not seem to mind in the least. The two have been acquainted long before she joined the FBI, dating back at least twenty years before the series. Following the murder of Jodie’s father, also an FBI agent, James tried convincing the young girl to join the witness protection program. Both out of concern for her safety and respect for his deceased friend, James pushed the offer hard and often, but Jodie refused him time and time again until at some point when she made him a deal; she would join the program if, and only if, she was promised a position in the FBI when she was older. <ref>[[Volume 43#File 437 - Ai Haibara's Resolution|Volume 43, File 437: "Ai Haibara's Resolution ", Pages 15 - 18]]</ref> Whether or not he accepted the deal, Jodie’s current employment with the FBI seems to speak for itself. She first meets [[Andre Camel]] while protecting [[Kir]], and his lies make her suspicious. Later he is forced to knock her out to carry out Conan and Akai's plan to bring Kir back to the Black Organization. Jodie has twice needed to pretend Camel is her lover in order to escape probing questions. The first time was to trick the police when Camel was a prime suspect in a [[Clash of Red and Black#Friday the Thirteenth .28Manga: 605-609.2C_Anime: 501-504.29|murder case]], and later to dodge awkward questions from Ran about why Jodie was still in Japan. Bitter hatred for [[Vermouth]] is putting Jodie's feelings very lightly. The animosity she holds for the American actress stems back twenty years, during Jodie’s early childhood, when her father was murdered in cold blood and home burned to a crisp by none other than Vermouth. Jodie’s father was an FBI agent working in secret on files pertaining to Vermouth. Thinking that Jodie would die along with her mother and the files when the fire was set ablaze, Vermouth allowed the young girl to wait with her daddy for the bedtime story he promised her before dying. Things did not work out as planned, however, when Jodie left to buy orange juice at the grocery store as the fire began, later returning to find her house in shambles. After hearing that only two bodies were discovered, Vermouth desperately searched for the escapee, but to no avail; Jodie had been placed into the witness protection program by her father’s colleagues.

While Vermouth had since moved on from that incident, Jodie’s whole life was shaped during that fateful night. Albeit hesitant at first to join the program, Jodie made a deal with the persistent FBI agent, James Black: if promised a place in the FBI, she would take up his offer and go into the witness protection program. Ever since then, the burning desire to avenge her father, mother, and lost childhood drove Jodie to seek out the murderess. Vowing to always remember what took place, Jodie even took up the infamous motto that Vermouth spoke on the night of their encounter: “A secret makes a woman, woman.” When, years later, the FBI found a new lead on Vermouth, Jodie was given the opportunity to finally bring the high ranking organization member to justice.

Compared to the girl she made an orphan, Vermouth’s strong dislike for Jodie pales in comparison but exists nonetheless. When the two were finally reunited after a long period of time where both posed as school teachers, Vermouth was just as determined to finish what she started twenty years ago as Jodie was to bringing her nemesis into FBI custody. Although intervention from both sides led to a stalemate during their encounter, their fierce rivalry lives on, each with renewed efforts to put an end to the other.

Impressed by his intelligence, deductionary abilities and knowledge, Jodie considers [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] her "favorite detective". She always takes him seriously, and lets him help her in figuring out plans. Also, it is shown that Jodie has placed great trust on the boy detective. It is because when Conan asks a favor, or is asked by him to do a certain action, even though it doesn't make much sense, Jodie complies without question.

Although the two first met off screen when Jodie began teaching at Teitan High, Jodie’s stern personality and tough teaching style left a bad, perhaps more uncertain, impression on Ran. After coincidentally running into Jodie after school one day at an arcade, an entirely new impression was left on [[Ran|Ran Mouri]]. The high school girl began to admire and enjoy Jodie’s fun, friendly side. On more than one occasion, Ran even went to Jodie for advice. Unbeknownst to Ran, however, Jodie was putting on a front, at times even using the girl as a means to see Conan in action. As an FBI agent, Jodie closely monitored Ran and Conan after discovering a dartboard with their pictures during her investigation of Vermouth. As a school teacher, Jodie easily managed to keep close tabs on the girl labeled “Angel”.

When Jodie left her teaching position, the class was deeply saddened. Despite Jodie’s protests, Ran and Sonoko attempted to throw their favorite teacher a farewell party, which later turned into a case. To prove a friend’s innocence, Ran attempted to call Shinichi to solve the case for her. Jodie, however, took the phone away, claiming that Ran needed to learn how to become independent. This gesture helps encourage Ran to try and solve the case on her own, further strengthening Ran’s admiration for Jodie. When the time came to say good-bye, however, Ran went to use Jodie’s bathroom only to find photos of her friends and her hidden behind the sink mirror. Concerned by the discovery, Ran couldn’t decide what to make of the photos. When she finally found the courage to bring the topic up to Jodie during the latter’s hospitalization, the quick thinking FBI agent explained that displaying photos of friends was an American tradition. Relieved to hear her teacher's reasoning, Ran's admiration and respect for Jodie quickly returned.

====Ai Haibara====
Jodie takes great interest in [[Haibara|Ai Haibara]] originally due to her investigation of Vermouth; although the reasons at first where unknown to her, Jodie suspected that there was a connection between the woman who Vermouth called “Sherry” and the young girl by the name of Ai Haibara. <ref>[[Volume 42#File 433 - The Truth Behind the Mask|Volume 42, File 433: "The Truth Behind the Mask ", Pages 5 - 6]]</ref> Following the [[Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night|showdown with Vermouth]], Jodie encourages Haibara to take part in the witness protection program, an offer that she declines after much consideration. As an FBI agent, she had hoped that Haibara would accept the offer, but because of their similar backgrounds, Jodie’s feelings were far closer to acceptance and admiration than they were disappointment. When Conan and Jodie succeeded in unmasking Vermouth and subsequently foiling her plans, the Araide family returned home to Japan, much to the dismay of the FBI agents who had gone to such lengths to protect them. It was encouraged that they take part in the [[Wikipedia:Witness protection|Witness Protection Program]], but [[Tomoaki Araide]] declined on behalf of the family. In order to make the transition back to daily life as smooth as possible, Jodie filled Tomoaki in on what he had missed, omitting certain details while making other things up to protect intelligence, allowing the doctor to return to his regular life again. During their final phone call, Jodie tells him that they will not speak again. Some twenty years ago, when Jodie was still just a little girl, [[Vermouth]] killed her parents, who had been working on the [[Black Organization]] for the FBI. Vermouth was surprised to find her in her house, and after Jodie had asked what was going on, Vermouth told her to wait by her father until he woke up, and that "a secret makes a woman woman". She then set the house ablaze, thus destroying any evidence that she had been there, along with the corpses of Jodie's parents and any records about the Black Organization.

Fortunately, Jodie had decided to run down the street to the store to buy her father some orange juice, and had thus survived. She was put under protection by the FBI, although she declined the Witness Protection Program, and eventually became an FBI agent herself under the tutelage and patronage of [[James Black]]. The only remaining memento from her past is the set of glasses she wears, which had originally belonged to her father.

== Plot overview ==
===Plot timeline===
Jodie appears around the same time as Vermouth as Ran's new English teacher at Teitan High under the name of "Jodie Saintemillion". She comes off as somewhat strange, and refers to Conan as "Cool Guy", which caused fans to believe that she knew his secret. (In fact, she now knows he's an incredible detective, but it is unclear if she knows his true identity). She is noted for often using the phrase of her enemy, Vermouth ('A secret makes a woman woman'). In Episode 226-227, Jodie, after watching Conan suspiciously, informs someone over the phone that she has found their target, whom she refers to as "Rotten Apple".

First indications of Jodie's FBI training are shown during the confrontation with the bus hijackers. She stealthily turns on the safety to one of the hijacker's guns, while knocking him down thus he cannot shoot it when he attempts to fire at her. She appears later in Episodes 271-272 and gives Conan information that allows him to solve the case. In Episodes 277-278, she is investigated by Conan and Heiji, both believing her to be Vermouth in disguise, as she pretends to not know japanese despite being perfectly fluent, and even helps them solve a case in the same episode.

It is not until her personal confrontation with Vermouth that Jodie's past and true identity as an FBI agent is revealed, as well as the real reason she's in Japan and the person she's looking for. She is tracking down Vermouth, and after a brief confrontation with her, Jodie is rescued by Conan and her colleague [[Shuichi Akai]]. Following this, she offers Ai a place in the Witness Protection Program, but Haibara declines. She does not appear again until when she helps Conan prevent an assassination plot of a politician orchestrated by the Black Organization and the subsequent capture and hospitalization of the Black Organization member, Kir.

Jodie has been heavily involved in the Black Organization arc in Episodes 492-504, which has involved the Black Organization and the FBI. The death of her partner, Akai, takes a very emotional toll on her. As it later turns out, they used to be lovers before Akai infiltrated the Black Organization by dating [[Akemi Miyano]], with whom he eventually became more intensely involved. On one occasion when conversation about drinks led Camel to mention Akai's love for Bourbon alcohol and how his presence would have been helpful, Jodie furiously tells him that Shuichi Akai is dead and he should never mention him again. She storms away from her friends. In addition to an inability to cope with this loss, her thought process has become seemingly more aggressive and risky, something that was unheard of during her long, careful investigation of Vermouth. Jodie's mindset has been especially fixated since her encounter with [[Scar Akai]]. When Camel mentioned that the sudden reappearance of Akai could be a trap set up by the organization, Jodie refused to accept the possibility of such a scenario.

Although [[James Black]] is in charge of the FBI agents stationed in Japan, his relationship with Jodie couldn’t be further from the usual boss and subordinate stereotype. In fact, during several occasions, Jodie takes over the role of giving out orders while James serves as her chauffeur. <ref>[[Volume 49#File 502 - A New Objective|Volume 49, File 502: "A New Objective", Page 11]]</ref> While there are many possibilities to explain such an arrangement, such as her strong personality and supposedly bad driving skills, James does not seem to mind in the least. The two have been acquainted long before she joined the FBI, dating back at least twenty years before the series. Following the murder of Jodie’s father, also an FBI agent, James tried convincing the young girl to join the witness protection program. Bitter hatred for [[Vermouth]] is putting Jodie's feelings very lightly. The animosity she holds for the American actress stems back twenty years, during Jodie’s early childhood, when her father was murdered in cold blood and home burned to a crisp by none other than Vermouth. Jodie’s father was an FBI agent working in secret on files pertaining to Vermouth. Thinking that Jodie would die along with her mother and the files when the fire was set ablaze, Vermouth allowed the young girl to wait with her daddy for the bedtime story he promised her before dying. Things did not work out as planned, however, when Jodie left to buy orange juice at the grocery store as the fire began, later returning to find her house in shambles. After hearing that only two bodies were discovered, Vermouth desperately searched for the escapee, but to no avail; Jodie had been placed into the witness protection program by her father’s colleagues.

While Vermouth had since moved on from that incident, Jodie’s whole life was shaped during that fateful night. Albeit hesitant at first to join the program, Jodie made a deal with the persistent FBI agent, James Black: if promised a place in the FBI, she would take up his offer and go into the witness protection program. Ever since then, the burning desire to avenge her father, mother, and lost childhood drove Jodie to seek out the murderess. Vowing to always remember what took place, Jodie even took up the infamous motto that Vermouth spoke on the night of their encounter: “A secret makes a woman, woman.” When, years later, the FBI found a new lead on Vermouth, Jodie was given the opportunity to finally bring the high ranking organization member to justice.

Compared to the girl she made an orphan, Vermouth’s strong dislike for Jodie pales in comparison but exists nonetheless. When the two were finally reunited after a long period of time where both posed as school teachers, Vermouth was just as determined to finish what she started twenty years ago as Jodie was to bringing her nemesis into FBI custody. Although intervention from both sides led to a stalemate during their encounter, their fierce rivalry lives on, each with renewed efforts to put an end to the other.

Impressed by his intelligence, deductionary abilities and knowledge, Jodie considers [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] her "favorite detective". She always takes him seriously, and lets him help her in figuring out plans. Also, it is shown that Jodie has placed great trust on the boy detective. It is because when Conan asks a favor, or is asked by him to do a certain action, even though it doesn't make much sense, Jodie complies without question.

Although the two first met off screen when Jodie began teaching at Teitan High, Jodie’s stern personality and tough teaching style left a bad, perhaps more uncertain, impression on Ran. After coincidentally running into Jodie after school one day at an arcade, an entirely new impression was left on [[Ran|Ran Mouri]]. The high school girl began to admire and enjoy Jodie’s fun, friendly side. On more than one occasion, Ran even went to Jodie for advice. Unbeknownst to Ran, however, Jodie was putting on a front, at times even using the girl as a means to see Conan in action. As an FBI agent, Jodie closely monitored Ran and Conan after discovering a dartboard with their pictures during her investigation of Vermouth. As a school teacher, Jodie easily managed to keep close tabs on the girl labeled “Angel”.

When Jodie left her teaching position, the class was deeply saddened. Despite Jodie’s protests, Ran and Sonoko attempted to throw their favorite teacher a farewell party, which later turned into a case. To prove a friend’s innocence, Ran attempted to call Shinichi to solve the case for her. Jodie, however, took the phone away, claiming that Ran needed to learn how to become independent. This gesture helps encourage Ran to try and solve the case on her own, further strengthening Ran’s admiration for Jodie. When the time came to say good-bye, however, Ran went to use Jodie’s bathroom only to find photos of her friends and her hidden behind the sink mirror. Concerned by the discovery, Ran couldn’t decide what to make of the photos. When she finally found the courage to bring the topic up to Jodie during the latter’s hospitalization, the quick thinking FBI agent explained that displaying photos of friends was an American tradition. Relieved to hear her teacher's reasoning, Ran's admiration and respect for Jodie quickly returned.

Jodie takes great interest in [[Haibara|Ai Haibara]] originally due to her investigation of Vermouth; although the reasons at first where unknown to her, Jodie suspected that there was a connection between the woman who Vermouth called “Sherry” and the young girl by the name of Ai Haibara. <ref>[[Volume 42#File 433 - The Truth Behind the Mask|Volume 42, File 433: "The Truth Behind the Mask ", Pages 5 - 6]]</ref> Following the [[Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night|showdown with Vermouth]], Jodie encourages Haibara to take part in the witness protection program, an offer that she declines after much consideration. As an FBI agent, she had hoped that Haibara would accept the offer, but because of their similar backgrounds, Jodie’s feelings were far closer to acceptance and admiration than they were disappointment. It was encouraged that they take part in the [[Wikipedia:Witness protection|Witness Protection Program]], but [[Tomoaki Araide]] declined on behalf of the family. In order to make the transition back to daily life as smooth as possible, Jodie filled Tomoaki in on what he had missed, omitting certain details while making other things up to protect intelligence, allowing the doctor to return to his regular life again. During their final phone call, Jodie tells him that they will not speak again. After participating in the opening ceremony, [[Conan]], [[Agasa]], [[Ran]], and the [[Detective Boys]] are enjoying the view from the observation deck of the 635-metre tall Bell Tree Tower. Suddenly, a bullet breaks through a window and strikes a man's chest, causing everyone to panic. Conan stays calm and uses [[Telescopic Lenses|the zoom]] function on his [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|tracking glasses]] to follow the path of the bullet to its source. At the other end, Conan spies a black shadow. "But sniping from so far away is impossible, it can't be--!" Conan and [[Masumi Sera]] pursue the fleeing sniper on [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Sera.27s_Yamaha_Artesia_XT400|Masumi's motorcycle]], but the chase takes a violent turn when the suspect attempts to blow up [[Tokyo Metropolitan Police|police]] patrol cars. Even the [[FBI]] get involved in the chase, but the culprit and the mysteries of the sniping end up vanishing into the ocean.

The investigation turns up a connection to the special United States Navy squadron, the [[Wikipedia:Navy SEALS|Navy SEALS]] and other former US military officers working in Japan. However, the first sniping was just the beginning; as more people are shot, the citizens of Tokyo panic! What is the meaning of the rifle case and dice left behind? As his investigation progresses, Conan soon finds himself in the sniper's crosshairs, only to be saved by Masumi who intervenes and takes the bullet in his stead. And, in the background, [[Subaru Okiya]] begins to make his move...

Some twenty years ago, when Jodie was still just a little girl, [[Vermouth]] killed her parents, who had been working on the [[Black Organization]] for the FBI. Vermouth was surprised to find her in her house, and after Jodie had asked what was going on, Vermouth told her to wait by her father until he woke up, and that "a secret makes a woman woman". She then set the house ablaze, thus destroying any evidence that she had been there, along with the corpses of Jodie's parents and any records about the Black Organization.

Fortunately, Jodie had decided to run down the street to the store to buy her father some orange juice, and had thus survived. She was put under protection by the FBI, although she declined the Witness Protection Program, and eventually became an FBI agent herself under the tutelage and patronage of [[James Black]]. The only remaining memento from her past is the set of glasses she wears, which had originally belonged to her father.

===Plot timeline===
Jodie appears around the same time as Vermouth as Ran's new English teacher at Teitan High under the name of "Jodie Saintemillion". She comes off as somewhat strange, and refers to Conan as "Cool Guy", which caused fans to believe that she knew his secret. (In fact, she now knows he's an incredible detective, but it is unclear if she knows his true identity). She is noted for often using the phrase of her enemy, Vermouth ('A secret makes a woman woman'). In Episode 226-227, Jodie, after watching Conan suspiciously, informs someone over the phone that she has found their target, whom she refers to as "Rotten Apple".

First indications of Jodie's FBI training are shown during the confrontation with the bus hijackers. She stealthily turns on the safety to one of the hijacker's guns, while knocking him down thus he cannot shoot it when he attempts to fire at her. She appears later in Episodes 271-272 and gives Conan information that allows him to solve the case. In Episodes 277-278, she is investigated by Conan and Heiji, both believing her to be Vermouth in disguise, as she pretends to not know japanese despite being perfectly fluent, and even helps them solve a case in the same episode.

It is not until her personal confrontation with Vermouth that Jodie's past and true identity as an FBI agent is revealed, as well as the real reason she's in Japan and the person she's looking for. She is tracking down Vermouth, and after a brief confrontation with her, Jodie is rescued by Conan and her colleague [[Shuichi Akai]]. Following this, she offers Ai a place in the Witness Protection Program, but Haibara declines. She does not appear again until when she helps Conan prevent an assassination plot of a politician orchestrated by the Black Organization and the subsequent capture and hospitalization of the Black Organization member, Kir.

Jodie has been heavily involved in the Black Organization arc in Episodes 492-504, which has involved the Black Organization and the FBI. The death of her partner, Akai, takes a very emotional toll on her. As it later turns out, they used to be lovers before Akai infiltrated the Black Organization by dating [[Akemi Miyano]], with whom he eventually became more intensely involved. Still, despite their breakup Jodie does maintain strong feelings for him.<ref name=Akai>Manga Chapter 677: The Fated Individual</ref>. When a man who looks like Shuichi Akai appears, Jodie is convinced that the stranger is her partner who has lost his memory, but he is gone before she can affirm her suspicion.

Due to her undercover status in Japan, Jodie’s personality and style of communication varies from person to person. Outside of a select few who know of her involvement with the FBI, Jodie maintains her cover at all times, first being a high school English teacher at Teitan High, and later an American tourist vacationing with her “boyfriend”.

====Shuichi Akai====
[[Shuichi Akai]] and Jodie are co-workers that came to Japan as part of an FBI unit led by James Black in pursuit of Vermouth and the Black Organization. While their relationship is mostly professional in the current-timeline, the two were romantically involved four to five years prior. When Akai was given the mission to earn the trust of and become a mole inside the Black Organization, he got close to Akemi Miyano for the purpose of using her inside connections. Despite his original intentions, however, Akai genuinely fell in love with Akemi, leading him to break up with a blindsided Jodie. Akai calmly explained his actions to her by saying, “To be able to love two women at the same time…it’s not that handy a personality.” While the two were no longer lovers, Jodie's feelings for Akai never swayed. Despite an end to their relationship, the two continued on as colleagues until the fateful day when Akai was killed. While his death was a tragic loss for all those in the FBI, Jodie took it especially hard. When first hearing the news, she was in complete denial that Akai could die. Despite her frantic attempts at proving Akai was alive, however, Jodie came to the cold hard truth on her own, bringing the agent to tears.

Since the incidents of Clash of Red and Black, Akai has become an understandably sore topic for Jodie. On one occasion when conversation about drinks led Camel to mention Akai's love for Bourbon alcohol and how his presence would have been helpful, Jodie furiously tells him that Shuichi Akai is dead and he should never mention him again. She storms away from her friends. In addition to an inability to cope with this loss, her thought process has become seemingly more aggressive and risky, something that was unheard of during her long, careful investigation of Vermouth. Jodie's mindset has been especially fixated since her encounter with [[Scar Akai]]. When Camel mentioned that the sudden reappearance of Akai could be a trap set up by the organization, Jodie refused to accept the possibility of such a scenario.

====James Black====
Although [[James Black]] is in charge of the FBI agents stationed in Japan, his relationship with Jodie couldn’t be further from the usual boss and subordinate stereotype. In fact, during several occasions, Jodie takes over the role of giving out orders while James serves as her chauffeur. <ref>[[Volume 49#File 502 - A New Objective|Volume 49, File 502: "A New Objective", Page 11]]</ref> While there are many possibilities to explain such an arrangement, such as her strong personality and supposedly bad driving skills, James does not seem to mind in the least. The two have been acquainted long before she joined the FBI, dating back at least twenty years before the series. Following the murder of Jodie’s father, also an FBI agent, James tried convincing the young girl to join the witness protection program. Both out of concern for her safety and respect for his deceased friend, James pushed the offer hard and often, but Jodie refused him time and time again until at some point when she made him a deal; she would join the program if, and only if, she was promised a position in the FBI when she was older. <ref>[[Volume 43#File 437 - Ai Haibara's Resolution|Volume 43, File 437: "Ai Haibara's Resolution ", Pages 15 - 18]]</ref> Whether or not he accepted the deal, Jodie’s current employment with the FBI seems to speak for itself. Despite this unusual working relationship, Jodie is a loyal and hard-working agent that wholeheartedly respects the man whom she has come to see as a sort of father figure. Work aside, the two have been shown to spend time together as friends, often along with Camel.

====Andre Camel====
She first meets [[Andre Camel]] while protecting [[Kir]], and his lies make her suspicious. Later he is forced to knock her out to carry out Conan and Akai's plan to bring Kir back to the Black Organization. Jodie has twice needed to pretend Camel is her lover in order to escape probing questions. The first time was to trick the police when Camel was a prime suspect in a [[Clash of Red and Black#Friday the Thirteenth .28Manga: 605-609.2C_Anime: 501-504.29|murder case]], and later to dodge awkward questions from Ran about why Jodie was still in Japan. Camel plays along awkwardly.

Bitter hatred for [[Vermouth]] is putting Jodie's feelings very lightly. The animosity she holds for the American actress stems back twenty years, during Jodie’s early childhood, when her father was murdered in cold blood and home burned to a crisp by none other than Vermouth. Jodie’s father was an FBI agent working in secret on files pertaining to Vermouth. Thinking that Jodie would die along with her mother and the files when the fire was set ablaze, Vermouth allowed the young girl to wait with her daddy for the bedtime story he promised her before dying. Things did not work out as planned, however, when Jodie left to buy orange juice at the grocery store as the fire began, later returning to find her house in shambles. After hearing that only two bodies were discovered, Vermouth desperately searched for the escapee, but to no avail; Jodie had been placed into the witness protection program by her father’s colleagues.

While Vermouth had since moved on from that incident, Jodie’s whole life was shaped during that fateful night. Albeit hesitant at first to join the program, Jodie made a deal with the persistent FBI agent, James Black: if promised a place in the FBI, she would take up his offer and go into the witness protection program. Ever since then, the burning desire to avenge her father, mother, and lost childhood drove Jodie to seek out the murderess. Vowing to always remember what took place, Jodie even took up the infamous motto that Vermouth spoke on the night of their encounter: “A secret makes a woman, woman.” When, years later, the FBI found a new lead on Vermouth, Jodie was given the opportunity to finally bring the high ranking organization member to justice.

Compared to the girl she made an orphan, Vermouth’s strong dislike for Jodie pales in comparison but exists nonetheless. When the two were finally reunited after a long period of time where both posed as school teachers, Vermouth was just as determined to finish what she started twenty years ago as Jodie was to bringing her nemesis into FBI custody. Although intervention from both sides led to a stalemate during their encounter, their fierce rivalry lives on, each with renewed efforts to put an end to the other.

Impressed by his intelligence, deductionary abilities and knowledge, Jodie considers [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] her "favorite detective". She always takes him seriously, and lets him help her in figuring out plans. Also, it is shown that Jodie has placed great trust on the boy detective. It is because when Conan asks a favor, or is asked by him to do a certain action, even though it doesn't make much sense, Jodie complies without question.

====Ran Mouri====
Although the two first met off screen when Jodie began teaching at Teitan High, Jodie’s stern personality and tough teaching style left a bad, perhaps more uncertain, impression on Ran. After coincidentally running into Jodie after school one day at an arcade, an entirely new impression was left on [[Ran|Ran Mouri]]. The high school girl began to admire and enjoy Jodie’s fun, friendly side. On more than one occasion, Ran even went to Jodie for advice. Unbeknownst to Ran, however, Jodie was putting on a front, at times even using the girl as a means to see Conan in action. As an FBI agent, Jodie closely monitored Ran and Conan after discovering a dartboard with their pictures during her investigation of Vermouth. As a school teacher, Jodie easily managed to keep close tabs on the girl labeled “Angel”.

When Jodie left her teaching position, the class was deeply saddened. Despite Jodie’s protests, Ran and Sonoko attempted to throw their favorite teacher a farewell party, which later turned into a case. To prove a friend’s innocence, Ran attempted to call Shinichi to solve the case for her. Jodie, however, took the phone away, claiming that Ran needed to learn how to become independent. This gesture helps encourage Ran to try and solve the case on her own, further strengthening Ran’s admiration for Jodie. When the time came to say good-bye, however, Ran went to use Jodie’s bathroom only to find photos of her friends and her hidden behind the sink mirror. Concerned by the discovery, Ran couldn’t decide what to make of the photos. When she finally found the courage to bring the topic up to Jodie during the latter’s hospitalization, the quick thinking FBI agent explained that displaying photos of friends was an American tradition. Relieved to hear her teacher's reasoning, Ran's admiration and respect for Jodie quickly returned.

====Ai Haibara====
Jodie takes great interest in [[Haibara|Ai Haibara]] originally due to her investigation of Vermouth; although the reasons at first where unknown to her, Jodie suspected that there was a connection between the woman who Vermouth called “Sherry” and the young girl by the name of Ai Haibara. <ref>[[Volume 42#File 433 - The Truth Behind the Mask|Volume 42, File 433: "The Truth Behind the Mask ", Pages 5 - 6]]</ref> Following the [[Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night|showdown with Vermouth]], Jodie encourages Haibara to take part in the witness protection program, an offer that she declines after much consideration. As an FBI agent, she had hoped that Haibara would accept the offer, but because of their similar backgrounds, Jodie’s feelings were far closer to acceptance and admiration than they were disappointment. While the two have yet to completely realize just how similar their pasts are, Jodie has admitted to seeing a little bit of herself in the young girl, even going as far as to comment on how Haibara had something that she lacked at that age; [[Detective Boys|friends]] who she can depend on. <ref>[[Volume 43#File 437 - Ai Haibara's Resolution|Volume 43, File 437: "Ai Haibara's Resolution ", Pages 15 - 18]]</ref> Although the relationship was mostly one-sided in the beginning, Haibara has started to see Jodie as a trustworthy figure of whom she can put her faith in, particularly after the many situations where FBI involvement has saved the day.

====Tomoaki Araide====
When Conan and Jodie succeeded in unmasking Vermouth and subsequently foiling her plans, the Araide family returned home to Japan, much to the dismay of the FBI agents who had gone to such lengths to protect them. It was encouraged that they take part in the [[Wikipedia:Witness protection|Witness Protection Program]], but [[Tomoaki Araide]] declined on behalf of the family. In order to make the transition back to daily life as smooth as possible, Jodie filled Tomoaki in on what he had missed, omitting certain details while making other things up to protect intelligence, allowing the doctor to return to his regular life again. During their final phone call, Jodie tells him that they will not speak again. Tomoaki uses this final opportunity to ask if Vermouth was really a bad person, infuriating Jodie who asked how a good person could kill while wearing a smile. <ref>[[Volume 45#File 459 - Truth Behind the Remaining Desk|Volume 45, File 459: "Truth Behind the Remaining Desk", Pages 16 - 18]]</ref>

Jodie Starling was named after both Clarice Starling, one of the main protagonists in ''Silence of the Lambs'', and actress Jodie Foster who performed Starling's role in the movie adaptation of the same name. Her fake name Saintemillion was from Saint-Émilion, a commune in the Gironde department in Aquitaine in south-western France.
