He later ends up solving a murder case there.<ref name="e1" /> As they are leaving, Shinichi witnesses a suspicious exchange between an unknown business man and [[Vodka|a man in black]] in a secluded area by the ferris wheel. While spying on the suspicious men, Shinichi does not notice [[Gin|another man in black]], who knocks him out from behind and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as [[APTX 4869]]. They then leave him to die. However, instead of killing Shinichi, a rare side-effect occurred. As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Professor Agasa made for him. He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Professor Agasa. In some situations, when there's only Ran, Sonoko, and himself, he will use Sonoko instead to solve the case at hand. Because of that, Sonoko eventually becomes another rather well-known "sleeping" detective although her reputation is only known to the local police investigation team and Sonoko's friends. In much later files, Conan has solved the case as himself then claimed afterwards that "Shinichi-niichan told him it".

As Conan, Shinichi tries to behave like a child. He refers to Ran as "Ran-neechan" (''nee-chan'' meaning older sister, a common nickname Japanese children give to teenagers and young adults they look up to), and refers to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan" (''nii-chan'' meaning older brother). He also refers to Kogoro as "Oji-san" or "Occhan" (both meaning Uncle), although he also does this as Shinichi. As Shinichi, he refers to Conan as usually "Conan-kun" or the "Kid in the Glasses". Shinichi treats Conan as a separate person completely, thinking for example, "changing back into Conan".

Conan remains very close to Ran, who in return is very protective of him. However, because Ran is unaware of his true identity, Conan often finds himself in awkward situations with her, such as when she confessed her feeling for Shinichi to him and when she made him bathe with her at a hot spring.

Conan tried to speak in a child-like tone of voice when dealing with adults, but he often gets caught up in the current case and begins speaking like an adult, referring to advanced topics and using reasoning much too complex for a normal child. When this happens, he often tries to pass it off as "something [he] heard on TV". Although as the series has progressed the adults around him have become more used to his "being quite smart for a child", causing him to behave more like himself around them, he still tries to pass as a normal child. The only police officers with whom Conan can speak in a professional manner are the [[FBI]], especially [[Jodie Starling]], [[Shuichi Akai]], [[James Black]], and Inspector [[Kansuke Yamato]] of the Nagano Police, all of whom suspect that there is more to Conan than meets the eye.

Conan's intelligence remains intact even though he is shrunk to a child. Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases and escape tricky situations.

Conan tends to act more like himself around the [[Detective Boys]], even to the point that they find it odd when he acts like a child around adults. He will often play games like baseball with the Detective Boys, but he is too used to soccer to perform well and will even instinctively use soccer techniques, such as kicking in games that do not call for it. Because he is unfamiliar with popular games and TV shows, Genta and the others tend to think of him as dumb. This annoys Conan so much that he will secretly watch TV in the living room after Kogoro and Ran go to sleep to get more "practice" in.

Conan has dark brown hair which mostly hangs downwards just above his blue eyes, but there are also a few strands that stick up at the front and back of his head. Conan's usual outfit consists of a blue suit jacket with a single button and a pair of shorts, red trainers and white socks, even though he has taken to wearing more casual clothing as time goes on. He also wears a red bowtie and his dad's old glasses. Both these items were later [[Gadgets|specifically modified]] by Professor Agasa to include a [[Voice-Changing Bowtie|voice changer]], [[Button Speaker|microphone]], and [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|homing device]], to aid in Conan in his cases. All of Shinichi's detective skills carry over to his Conan form, although Conan does not the have the reputation Shinichi had. He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any "strange points", in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. This comes from his photographic memory{{citation needed}}, of being able to remember every abstract of an investigation. Conan's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading in his "first childhood".

As a child, Conan can attract less suspicion while investigating crime scenes, get away with searching people's personal property, and ask innocent questions without setting suspects on guard, although it comes with the drawback of not having Shinichi's authority or reputation.

=== Athletic ability ===
Conan is just as skilled as Shinichi in soccer, but a lot less powerful because he only has the strength of a young child. To make up for this, Conan uses Agasa's Power-enhancing kick shoes. Conan uses signature, powerful precision kick to knockout criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Like Shinichi, Conan's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing and snowboarding.

Conan also has some skill with firearms despite the recoil being much more severe for a child's body. He shoots out a bus window during a bus hijacking, and precisely grazes Ran's leg to render her useless as a hostage in the second movie.

Conan's nimbleness is especially noticeable in the non-[[canon]] movies. For example, in the sixth movie, Conan is seen to fight with various antagonists, and he even holds his own against Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer who bests even Ran in combat. In the fourteenth movie, Conan does a back flip on his skateboard in order to avoid being killed by the blimp's hijackers. Conan shows a proclivity for skateboarding. In the movies and anime, Conan can easily perform very complicated tricks and dodges with his skateboard at high speed.

Conan cannot sing on key in the slightest so he is often accused of being [[Wikipedia:tone deaf|tone deaf]]. Despite being a hilariously awful singer, Conan has [[Wikipedia:perfect pitch|perfect pitch]] and can identify notes accurately even in difficult contexts like the sound of phone button presses forming a melody. In Episode 11: The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case, he knows that the piano is in tune and deciphers a message at the end just by listening to the notes that are played. Haibara directly described Shinichi Kudo as perfect-pitched in the last scenes, of the twelfth Detective Conan movie [[Full Score of Fear]]. He also manages to replicate and sing dial tones for a phone, showing that the reason he can't sing is because he simply doesn't have ''relative'' pitch. In File 728 (Episode 614), Conan stated he isn't very knowledgeable about music but identified the untuned piano key whereupon Haibara joked about his sharp ears despite being tone-deaf.

Also, to be like his favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes, he plays the violin. This was confirmed in movie 12 of the 'Full Score of Fear' when he played "Amazing Grace" for Ran. However, he is stumped on what Ran meant when she said, "He has a funny habit when he plays."

== Plot overview ==

After Shinichi becomes Conan, he sets out to find the men in black almost immediately. At the suggestion of Agasa, he moves in with Ran and Kogoro, hoping that cases related to them come by. Pretty soon, a case involving a woman name [[Akemi Miyano]] (using the alias Masami Hirota) appears. Akemi robs a bank for the men in black in the hopes that they will free her sister from their organization. Conan is unable to realize the case's connection to the organization until after the men in black have shot Akemi and left her for dead for trying to double cross them. Conan runs across the men in black again on a bullet train, this time learning their codenames: [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]].

Ran quickly deduces that Shinichi is in London as well. She asks some Londoners about a Japanese boy, and they give her directions, without specifying it was actually a six-year-old they saw. In a phone booth, Conan takes the pill originally meant for his return trip to Tokyo in order to conceal his identity from Ran. During this time, he manages to confess his feelings to her. Although they are romantic interests as Shinichi and Ran, Conan and [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] share a brother/sister kind of relationship. Ran plays a nurturing protective role and treats Conan like a child version of Shinichi. They do a lot of activities together such as swimming, going to the movies or festivals, and more. Ran and Conan both look out for each other's wellbeing. Ran stands up for Conan during Kogoro's outbursts and destroys any criminals seeking to inflict harm on Conan with her karate. Conan lends an ear and advice when Ran is in an difficult situation or needs to vent, and he comforts and encourages her when she is feeling down, especially about Shinichi being away for so long. [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] and Conan most often see each other as nuisances. Conan dislikes Kogoro's usually poor detective ability and case handling, slovenly personal habits, and overinflated ego. Kogoro's deduction doesn't seem to improve so Conan almost always needs to knock Kogoro out when he starts spouting off incorrect theories. Although in most cases Conan merely sees Kogoro as a drunk idiot, he often is impressed when Kogoro gets serious and actually gets the case right, so he will allow the "non-sleeping Kogoro" to take the spotlight. Kogoro views Conan as a freeloader who constantly gets underfoot and never fails to insinuate himself at cases, "interfere" with the scene, and pipe up with childish observations that consistently ruin Kogoro's deductions.

Conan's parents, [[Yusaku Kudo|Yusaku]] and [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]], like to push their child towards becoming an even better detective. They enjoy giving out challenges and sometimes without letting Conan know who's giving them: they disguised once to simulate a case and force Conan to discover their identities by his own means.

Yukiko loves to meddle in Conan's (and Shinichi's) love life as she will often make allusions such as Ran being her possible future daughter-in-law or Ai and Ayumi having feelings for Conan. He doesn't usually pay much attention to them. Once she has mentioned that Ai has romantic feelings for him because she looked at him ten times, saying that the only time a girl would do that is if she likes the boy or the boy has something on his face. Conan simply pushes it off as Ai checking on her "lab mouse," but at night, in bed, Conan asks Ai if he has something on his face.

Conan's mother helped him out once to keep his secret identity from being exposed to Ran by creating an alibi for him.

Conan treats [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]] as a member of his own family, like an uncle. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help. Agasa's willingness to help whenever possible makes Shinichi's life as Conan more convenient. He was the one who created most of Conan's gadgets, including his power shoes and tracking glasses. He willingly plays Conan's case solving mouthpiece when Conan lacks someone else convenient to use. When Conan needs something, like info from past cases for example, he usually asks Agasa to get it. Agasa often acts as a chauffeur because he is trustworthy and the only adult with a car regularly available.

Agasa often worries about Shinichi, especially when he thinks Shinichi might be going over his head. Agasa almost always responds positively to Shinichi's requests, but doesn't like it when Shinichi hides the reasons for it, especially if it is dangerous.

When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals even after Kudo bests Heiji in their first case. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act like an older brother towards him much to the annoyance of Conan. Since then, the two have become rather close friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They tend to stick together on cases, although sometimes this is because Heiji forces the less enthusiastic Conan to come along. While fond of Heiji as a fellow detective he can relate to, Conan finds Heiji's antics more of an annoyance than anything. Much to Conan's chagrin, Heiji even convinces others that Conan is his disciple. Conan especially dislikes Heiji's dangerous habit of calling Conan 'Kudo' when others are present.

Heiji hasn't seemed to have gotten over the former rivalry as well as Kudo has, so he hates being to compared to Shinichi. Heiji gets especially annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better (or even equal), and will often go to great lengths to show "west" (Osaka) is better than "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

Even though [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] do not yet know who's stopping their operations, Gin has been shown to be curious who "that guy" is, "that guy" being Conan. Gin has tried to catch a glimpse of Conan's face in a helicopter in the movie, [[The Raven Chaser]], but failed after Conan successfully downed the helicopter. Conan seems to have a very bitter hatred towards them, and this only increases as more people are targeted by the Black Organization.

[[Vermouth]] seems to have great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him as the Black Organization's 'Silver Bullet'. She also protects Conan probably because when she was disguising as a serial killer in New York, she was saved by Conan (Shinichi at the time) and Ran. When the Organization planned on killing Kogoro, and later Conan, she strongly objected to a point where Gin suspected whether Kogoro is related to Vermouth. Because of this, Conan does not react strongly when she is mentioned as opposed to Haibara. He also seems to consider her less of a threat than the other members because he was able to bargain with her about Haibara and knows Vermouth is keeping his secret for personal reasons.

[[Tooru Amuro]] (codenamed Bourbon) has recently begun associating with the Mouri Detective Agency as Kogoro's "apprentice". Conan initially treated him in a somewhat friendly manner, even thinking that "another annoying person's showed up" when he learned Amuro would be joining Kogoro on cases. After learning of Amuro's membership in the Black Organization, though, Conan has been relatively nervous about him being near Ran. He's become more cautious and is somewhat confused by Amuro's helpful behavior, though he attempts to pretend nothing has changed.

Before being shrunk, Shinichi had encountered [[Kaitou Kid]] once during the Clock Tower heist, though they did not meet face-to-face. In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

In the movies, it is implied that Kid knows Conan's identity; he even helps Conan maintain his cover by disguising himself as Shinichi so that a suspicious Ran would stop suspecting Conan. However, this has not been confirmed by Gosho Aoyama, nor has it been implied in the manga.

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], [[Yusaku Kudo]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], [[Heiji Hattori]], and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] of the Black Organization also knows about Conan's secret. Later in Episode 508 of the anime, [[Eisuke Hondou]] confirms Conan's identity as [[Shinichi Kudo]] straight from him. In manga chapter 812-814, [[Subaru Okiya]] (which he is [[Shuichi Akai]]) knows Conan is Shinichi. [[Masumi Sera]] may be suspicious that Conan is Shinichi Kudo.

The 3rd, 8th, and 14th movies also demonstrate that Kaitou Kid apparently knows Conan's identity and acts to protect it. However, this has yet to be backed up by the original artist, Gosho Aoyama, in the manga or (as would follow) the anime main series.

== Gadgets ==

Professor Agasa has made many gadgets for Conan. The first one being is his wristwatch stun gun. He uses about every cases to knock out the great sleeping sleuth Kogoro Mouri, on about every cases they encounter, he has to be knocked out because, his deductions are just sometimes too insane. The second gadget would have to be his voice changing bow tie. With this gadget, Conan can alter his voice from high to low, or child to adult. This gadget has proven its self to be a great assistance to Conan because, when he knocks out his target he uses this to mimic their voice. Professor Agasa had made the next gadget to look like normal tennis shoes but with the turn of a dial, they strengthen Conan's feet allowing him to kick objects in order to knockout or stun the criminal. Along with the shoes, Professor Agasa made Conan a ball dispensing belt, which when pressing a button a fully inflated soccer ball appears. The tracker glasses are a special type of glasses made with bullet proof glass (as seen in the Movie 3: The Last Wizard of the Century). Another handy feature is that when pressing a button allow you to enhance a certain image zooming in on it, this has been found to be very useful to Conan because with this he can track down all of the Detective Badges. The Detective Boys Badges are the badges that allow the Detective Boys to communicate each other with built in radios in their badges. Professor Agasa made special watches just for the Detective Boys that has a built in light. Another gadget is his solar powered skateboard or snowboard that collects power from the sun and then at night, runs for 30 minutes. His last gadget is his handy dandy super stretch suspenders, which he uses to rescue Ran in Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target.

After Shinichi had been shrunk by the [[APTX 4869]], the first person he met and entrusted himself to was Agasa. After having been convinced that the little boy was Shinichi, Agasa was also the first one to advise Shinichi to exercise caution in his pursuit of the [[Black Organization]]. He also helped Shinichi in establishing his new identity as [[Conan Edogawa]], including constructing several gadgets which help Shinichi in carrying on his detective work surreptitiously, and in order to perfect Conan's cover, he also enlisted him into [[Teitan Elementary]] and thus came to know the children who would form the [[Detective Boys]]. When [[Ai Haibara|Shiho Miyano]] fled the clutches of the Black Organization, she fled to Shinichi's house but collapsed from exhaustion before Agasa's doorstep. Agasa subsequently took her in, learned about her true identity and helped her establish her new identity as Ai Haibara. He also entrusted Shinichi's parents with the secret about what has happened to their son.

Jinpei Matsuda was originally a member of the Tokyo Police bomb squadron. His partner Hagiwara was killed four years previously by a serial bomber who had sworn revenge on the police for the accidental death of his partner. When the killer resurfaced three years ago, Matsuda's superiors, fearing that he would become reckless due to personal interest, transferred him to [[Inspector Megure]]'s department, where he was promptly partnered with [[Miwako Sato]], then a stll-fledging detective.

Sato was at first put off by his direct manner, but then the bomber appeared in their district less than a week later, depositing an explosive charge in a Ferris wheel at an amusement park. When Matsuda attempted to disarm the bomb, the killer trapped him inside and revealed the existence of yet another bomb hidden in the city. As the countdown of the Ferris wheel bomb would wind down, the name of the second bomb's location would be gradually displayed, claiming a policeman's life for the life of innocents, as the bomber had intended. Matsuda sent the bomb location to Sato via SMS just as the final seconds ran out, his last thoughts being regret that he would not be able to drink to his partner's memory following the apprehension of the culprit.<ref>Manga Chapter 371: Serial Bomber Case</ref>

Reiko Kujo is [[Eri Kisaki]]'s rival in those courtroom battles where the two meet on opposing sides. She has gathered a reputation as a successful prosecutor and, as a result of such, the nickname "Madonna of Prosecutors".

Kujo first met Kisaki when the latter took up the defense of Shinji Usami, who was being accused of the murder of Hirasawa Tsuyoshi, who slew Usami's young son by thoughtlessness. She became determined to beat Kisaki's winning streak and thus further her reputation by defeating the one defender who had never lost a case. Kujo is rather rash and eager to proclaim a defendant's guilt even with scant evidence at hand; whether this stems from her personal drive to defeat Kisaki or from her profession is as yet unrevealed. Whenever a case brings them together as opponents in the courtroom, Eri Kisaki and Reiko Kujo deal with each other on a strictly professional basis despite their intense rivalry. Each of them respects the other for her skills, however, and whenever a case turns against her, Kujo is fair enough to accept defeat and bring the true culprit to justice.

Makoto attended Haido High School, where he was a prominent member, and eventually the captain, of his karate team and became known as "The Prince of Kicks". As a master martial artist, Makoto is usually cool and collected, especially in crisis situations, and also a keen observer. The only thing which does throw him off is his affection for Sonoko, for whom he will go great lengths, even forsake an important tournament just to meet her. However, Makoto's bashfulness around her, his dedication to his fighting skills and some competitive impulse keep him jumping from one obligation to the other, so their relationship is rendered a bit difficult.

As a comic relief, Makoto always bears a plaster above his left brow as a mark for his fighting competitiveness. In addition, he seems completely immune to pain, dismissing a knife sticking in his arm as nothing too significant.

Not much is known about Makoto's family except for that Makoto's father owns the Kawaraya Inn that Conan, Ran, and Sonoko stayed at in Izu. Yusaku Kudo was already noted for his sharp intellect and deductive abilities at a young age. He met Inspector Juzo Megure and became a good friend and valuable adviser to him in solving very difficult cases.<ref name="Call">Manga Chapter 204: The Initial Call</ref> While he often assisted the police, Yusaku's primary aspiration was that of a writer. Quickly attracting acclaim in his early twenties as a young novelist, he encountered the girl whom he resolved to marry: [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko Fujimine]], an already famed and beautiful actress. While taking her out in an expensive restaurant to make his proposal, he was involved in a murder case which he solved brilliantly, and right afterward proposed to a startled Yukiko - which she accepted. Yusaku's detective stories have won international acclaim, especially his novels involving the character called Night Baron, who has become a popular cultural item. He prefers to be known as a novelist, despite multiple demonstrations of a Mycroftian tendency to solve a case before Shinichi reaches the same conclusions. Yusaku Kudo possesses a very sharp intellect and observation skills, traits which his son inherited, though Yusaku's own abilities remain more well-honed. He demonstrates in multiple cases an ability to operate one step ahead of both Shinichi and criminals, but he chooses to not get involved unless Conan appears unable solve the case alone in time to save the intended victim.<ref name="Train">Manga Chapter 218: The Last Station</ref><ref>Manga Chapter 752: A Troublesome and Difficult Case</ref><ref>Episode (English #99-102: The Cornered Detective)</ref> His success as a novelist is to a large part based on his keen understanding of the criminal mind, as his most famous recurring character is a criminal. The legally separated wife of [[Kogoro Mouri]], Eri is a lawyer who often gets tangled in Kogoro's cases, usually serving as an extra pair of eyes when it becomes time to investigate a crime. Although she does not like Kogoro's attitude and personality (especially his drinking and skirt-chasing habits), she still deeply loves and cares for him, often testing him to see if he still cares about her as well.

Eri and Kogoro, like Shinichi and Ran, had been best friends since childhood, falling in love in their teens. [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] had believed that Eri had separated from Kogoro because he had shot her in the leg to get her away from a crazed serial killer, when in fact Eri had completely respected Kogoro for his decision, which she also believed was the correct one. She had actually left him when she had cooked him a gratitude dinner afterwards, which Kogoro assessed (perhaps rightfully) to be completely horrible.<ref name=target>[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> After this, Eri focused full time on her duties as a lawyer and has since become a highly respected (and feared) member of her profession.

Sango Yokomizo was originally the head inspector of the Saitama district, though he transferred to the Shizuoka district soon after. However, he and his twin brother [[Jugo Yokomizo|Jugo]], who is also a police inspector and has remained in Saitama, stay in touch and have even assisted each other in various (and even locally unrelated) cases.

As children, Sango and Jugo would often play with other kids near the beach. But in the apartment they found an unknown man impaled upon a knife, turning this case into a murder investigation. Soon, however, Conan figured out that the 'victim' had actually committed suicide: The man was Akiyoshi Fujie, Yoko's old boyfriend who still loved her. Due to a fatal misunderstanding, however, Akiyoshi fell into despair and plunged himself on to the knife, making it appear as if he had been murdered in order to take revenge on Yoko. Despite her adult age, Yukiko still behaves like a teenager. She is bubbly, overconfident and attention-seeking, and prefers to stand in the lime-light (literally) whenever possible. She can be prone to jealousy over Yusaku's occasionally flirtatious behavior, and can demonstrate impulsive tendencies. She is an extremely reckless driver and very sensitive about her age: whenever her son ''dares'' to call her "oba-chan" in Japanese (in English, the closest equivalent would be "aunt"), she sets up such a furious face that Shinichi must quickly correct himself by calling her "onee-chan" ("older sister").

== Background ==
Eisuke Hondo first appeared soon after one of [[Conan Edogawa|Conan's]] confrontations with the [[Black Organization]], in which it was revealed that popular newscaster [[Hidemi Hondou|Rena Mizunashi]] was one of their members. He enlisted into Teitan High School and quickly made friends with [[Ran Mouri]] and [[Sonoko Suzuki]], who noticed the striking similarity to Mizunashi.

Some time later, Eisuke visited [[Kogoro Mouri|Ran's father]] in his office, where he also ran into Conan. After expressing a vivid interest in Mouri's work, he was invited by Ran to come by anytime, much to the displeasure of Conan, who had become suspicious of Eisuke. This suspicion was confirmed by the fact that in subsequent cases Eisuke made several blunders which would 'incidentally' contribute to the solution of the relevant case.

In time, Conan found out that Eisuke was indeed related to Rena Mizunashi. He had come to Tokyo looking for clues of his sister's whereabouts, sparked by him seeing her working as a newscaster by happenstance. He learned the truth from Conan, Hidemi and [[Shuichi Akai]] - that his sister, as well as [[Ethan Hondou|his late father]], were working for the CIA against the Black Organization. Following this revelation, he was offered a place in the Witness Protection Program, which he refused, though he decided to follow in his family's footsteps by joining the CIA one day. Alone with Conan, he also confessed that he had fallen in love with Ran and wished to take her with him to America. When Conan protested, Eisuke laughed out loud, stating that Conan's reaction was the final confirmation he had needed: that Conan was really [[Shinichi Kudo]], and that in fact he was responsible for the 'Sleeping Kogoro's' success. With this revelation, he asked Conan/Shinichi to take good care of Ran in his stead, thus promising to keep his secret.

Eisuke is a person with extremely bad luck. He's constantly bumping into or falling over something. However, his clumsiness belies a sharp intellect and keen talent for observation: With only few clues to work with, he was able to track down his vanished sister to the Haido Central Hospital, where the FBI was keeping her under guard, and even penetrate the facility to confront Rena Mizunashi - who really was his sister [[Hidemi Hondou|Hidemi]] - before he was discovered by Conan. He figured out that Shinichi and Conan were the same person before even meeting Conan and managed to force to the truth out of him later.

While Ran, Sonoko and Conan visited a friend from Middle School in a hospital, they coincidentally met Eisuke who was looking for his sister who left 10 years ago. His sister looks exactly like Mizunashi Rena but Eisuke insisted that they are different people. To know if they are the same or not, they decided to visit a big fan of hers to confirm it. Koshi Anno, a big fan of Rena, told them that he thinks they're the same person and showed them a video wherein Rena has the same hairstyle as in the picture. But Eisuke insisted that they are different since the video proved that Rena's blood type is AB which can't be possible because when he was a kid, he remembered having blood transfusion from her sister and his blood type is O.

After the winter break, Conan learns from Ran lost contact of Eisuke. The last time that Eisuke talked to her was when he told her that he found a clue on his father's company in Haido Central Hospital, the same hospital wherein Rena was secretly confined. Conan decided to inform Jodie about his suspicions on Eisuke. Jodie told him that Eisuke's father was CIA spy and was killed by Rena four years ago. He later realized that Eisuke found a BO member and is currently in the hospital. The FBI decided to search the BO member hiding in the hospital. While searching in the hospital for clue on Eisuke and the BO, the nurse informed Conan that she remembered Eisuke had a surgery in Tokyo due to his Leukemia.

The night before they decided to move Rena, Eisuke visited Rena's room and forced her to wake up. When he tried to stab her with scissors, Rena stopped him and called him Ei-chan. Conan explained to Eisuke that Rena is his sister and they now have the same blood type, AB, after he had a bone marrow transplant when he was a kid due to Leukemia. Akai told him that her sister is a member of a certain "Organization". Eisuke was then pulled out of the room.<ref>[[Clash of Red and Black|Episode 491-504: Clash of Red and Black]]</ref>

Conan and Haibara meet Ran, Sonoko and Eisuke in a book store. Eisuke remarks that "he probably won't need" a study book the girls are buying, and that he "hates to be restricted by anything; even time." Eisuke visits a Karaoke box along with Ran, Sonoko and Conan. Conan and Haibara notice that a man is trailing the group, and Conan suggests that the man is likely an FBI agent keeping tabs on Eisuke, since he refused access to the Witness Protection Program.

In the karaoke box, Eisuke leaves to visit the bathroom. He takes a very long time to return, and does so with a terrified expression. The body of the man trailing the group is discovered in another room. Conan suspects Eisuke, since he is under the impression that the deceased was tracking him. However, it is soon revealed that the man was in fact a stalker with a fixation on Sonoko. (What had frightened Eisuke was when he mistakenly opened another customer's room, he saw what he mistook as two men kissing.) Ran is very glad that Eisuke is innocent, to the point where her eyes become tearful.

At the ending of the case, Eisuke walks home alone with Conan. He asks Conan to speak with Shinichi about his intentions to marry Ran and live with her in America. Conan angrily tells him that he can't, and reveals his identity as Kudou Shinichi to Eisuke. Eisuke laughs, and informs Conan that he had guessed it all along- showing all his deductions to Conan. He then tells Conan that he will move to America and join the CIA, following in his father and sister's footsteps.

Sumiko Kobayashi attended Teitan Elementary and was in the 18th graduating class, two classes above [[Detective Chiba]]. She became the new class teacher of [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and the [[Detective Boys]] after their previous teacher had married and retired. Her harsh behavior towards her charges had earned her the nickname "oni-baba" (hag) amongst her students.

One night, the Detective Boys came into the school to investigate strange occurrences involving busts from art class and an anatomy model from the sick room, which had been mysteriously moved around, and the mysterious absence of the vice principal. The busts and the model had actually been used by Kobayashi for a rehearsal for the next parent-teacher conference. Kobayashi is in fact very fond of children, but her kindness had caused her to have very little control over her class at her previous school, resulting in a disastrous parent-teacher conference. To fix this, she had forced herself to be strict and harsh when she transferred to Teitan Elementary, but after the Detective Boys discovered her nicer side, she decided to be herself again and has become very popular with her students ever since.<ref>Manga Chapter 155: Is Someone There?</ref>

On one occasion, she accompanied Conan and the Detective Boys to an interview which became a murder investigation as they found the reporter slain. As it turned out later, when Kobayashi was still a small child, she had confronted two no-good juveniles attempting to steal mangas from a bookshop. When the culprits contemptuously shoved her aside, a young boy intervened on her behalf, cooly citing a paragraph from Japanese law concerning theft. As a sign of gratitude, Kobayashi bought her rescuer a drink ornamented with a circle of sakura flowers made from the straw wrapper, as a symbol of goodness and justice (referring to the sakura shaped Japanese police badges). Kobayashi is very kind and fond of children, considering them the most wonderful thing in the world. Kobayashi is also quite timid and sensitive, not to mention that she suffers from serious stagefright. Even though she has appointed herself the manager of the Detective Boys, the kids often leave her out of case or ignore her warnings. In her first appearance, Kobayashi was known by the students of Class 1-B, including, Conan and the Detective Boys, as a strict,mean teacher, who was always disciplining her class, never showing any kindness. Her initial personality, led to her students nicknaming her,"Old Demon Hag".Then, one night, the [[Detective Boys]], decided to figure out why many dolls were missing one after another. Conan deduces the one behind the "kidnappings", was Kobayashi herself, which relieved the children. Kobayashi finally revealed the reason behind her "dictator-like" teaching, was that, in the past, two of her students fought at a parent-teacher conference, because of her lack in disciple.She would come at Teitan Elementary at night to practice for the next parent-teacher conference, so there be no more fights.However, with some suggestions from the Detective Boys, she changed her teaching style, and became more well liked.

Later on, she would introduce Ai Haibara, as the new student of Class1-B, who would also become an official member of the Detective Boys.

=== A Manager is Born ===
Kobayashi agrees to give the Detective Boys a ride to a writer, who wanted to do a report on them, for their actions in complicated cases. However, the gang weren't expecting a dead writer, and quickly inform the police. When [[Inspector Megure]] and [[Wataru Takagi]] arrive at the scene, both believe that Kobayashi is Sato, because without her glasses, she bears a scary resemblance to the officer. Soon Conan tries to prove the Detective Boy's skills in catching the criminal, however, he also had to conceal his vast intelligence, so his secret wouldn't be questioned by Kobayashi. Conan and his friends manage to drop hints on who the real culprit is and who is promptly arrested.

After the case, Kobayashi dubbed herself the "manager" of the group, wanting to solve and capture "bad guys", along with them, shocking the children to great extent.
Kobayashi has been with the group on many cases,despite them constantly ignoring her everytime or has been the Detective Boys' reference to call her, if they're involved in a case. Once, she devised a riddle for the students to deduce, without the aid of Conan, so some new students would feel more welcome. Kobayashi, along with Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, Haibara, and Genta, listen about Conan's story of how Shinichi (himself) and Ran, as children, had their first "coded mystery". Her main reason fro becoming the "manager", seems to stem from her intense interests in mystery novels and her respect for the police.

=== A Lost Love, Finally Rekindled ===
During another one of the kids' cases, Kobayashi is called to pick up the children, by Megure, and saids she'll take them home in a taxi. However, Shiratori offered that she should take them home in his car, while holding her hand, in a romantic style. Over the next few days, he has made constant visits to where she works, warning her of any and all danger in the vicinity, which sparks a crush by Kobayashi to him, unaware of their actual history.

Later, Shiratori again warns Kobayashi of a vicious, serial purse thief, who might be a woman, who's still at large. During the conversation, the latter asks why Shiratori kept calling her, and he simply replied, "Because I worry about you". The Detective Boys soon arrive and asks her if they want to come to a festival with her, and she agrees. Soon, she loses sight of the children, and unknowingly hears a murder being commited, then a few minutes later, sees the culprit's silhouette. She screams very loudly and Conan shows up. The next day, Kobayashi goes to the police station, with the kids, in order to tell her story to the police, and meets [[Yumi Miyamoto]] and [[Detective Chiba]], who confuse her for Sato, until Shiratori clears up the misunderstanding, and escorts Kobayashi to a conference so they can discuss the case in more detail. Then, she learns of Shiratori's former interest with Sato and her striking appearance to her. This leads her to suspect that Shiratori only liked her because of her physical traits to the female officer.

She begins to treat Shiratori harshly and after seeing that the three main suspects weren't the
criminal, she coldly tells Shiratori not to bother her anymore and leaves. At school, he tries the real reason why he liked her, but she dismisses it, as she believes he's only lying. However, while working late at night, she was almost killed by one of the three suspect, the criminal, in order to silenece her, but is saved by Shiratori, the Detective Boys and Sato. Kobayashi then finally remembers him, after he says some familiars words. Shiratori then confesses he was always in love with her, and Kobayashi blushes and replies, "Yes!". Later, she makes a special bento for Shiratori, signifying that the two are now a couple.

As a child, Kobayashi instantly became Shiratori's true love, and was the very reason why he entered police force. At the end of a case, that gave some of Shiratori's past, who realized Sato wasn't his true love, and the suspect whom he also thought was his love, he thought he would never find her. However, Ayumi helped by saying the exact same lines that the girl from his past said and makining the same wristband she gave him. Shiratori desperately asked who taught her that, Ayumi simply replied her school teacher. Then, at that exact moment, Kobayashi came to pick up the Detective Boys who were involved, when Shiratori layed eyes on her, recognizing Kobayshi as his true "woman of destiny", their relationship began to spark. He would always warn her of any dangers nearby where she worked or lived, which caused Kobayashi to form romantic feelings. In fact, his concern over her, constant visits, and kindness towards her, often causes her to blush deeply.

When she became a star witness in a murder investigation, she learned of her resemblance to Detective Sato, and after hearing about his former crush on her from other policemen, she thought that the only reason he was so interested in her was because of her striking resemblance to [[Miwako Sato]], and was not only shocked, but hurt, thinking Shiratori didn't have feelings for her. Not knowing the real reason, Kobayashi began to act coldly and harshly toward him,even when he confessed his true feelings to her, she brushed it off, thinking Shiratori confused her with Detective Sato. However, it was all cleared up by the end of the case, when he not only saved her from the culprit, but also cooly said some of the laws of Tokyo, the same way he did as a child, which finally reminded her of their first meeting, and Shiratori romantically told her she was the woman he loved, shocking her to the extent of blushing, then replied with a fast,"Yes!". Afterwards, the two began dating, becoming an official "boyfriend-girlfriend" couple, and every morning, Kobayashi gives Shiratori bentos for his "energy demanding" work.

Kobayashi would often make bentos for him, after they became an official couple, every morning, when he went work. On White Day, Shiratori was seen with many chocolate, inside his car for her, this is a major hint that earlier, Kobayashi had given him chocolate, to express her feelings, and now his chocolate was to express he reciprocated his love for her. Then, later on, she was shown with all the delicious sweets, from Shiratori's car, at her house or apartment, with an estactic smile, while at the same time blushing, not knowing where to begin. Since, the sweets were seen at her home or apartment, it's very believable that Shiratori knows her address, and possibly, even visits there frequently.

== Background ==
Yumi is a traffic cop who mostly focuses on traffic accidents and hit-and-runs. She often runs into the [[Detective Boys]] and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] when they are in the middle of solving a case, and has helped them numerous times in solving cases and catching criminals.

Yumi's best friend is [[Miwako Sato]], whom she often teased about her feelings for [[Wataru Takagi]]. However, she is also jealous of Sato the others for having relationships while she remains single, and did everything she could to keep [[Detective Chiba|Chiba]] and [[Naeko Miike|Miike]] from spending too much time alone when she noticed how well they were getting along. Yumi had a boyfriend in her college years whom she had dumped. The boyfriend is said to have a childish personality and very immature, but good looking. == Background ==
Tomoaki Araide is the son of [[Kogoro Mouri]]'s physician, Yoshiteru Araide, and also on occasion the basketball coach and school medic at Teitan High, the school [[Shinichi Kudo]], Ran Mouri and [[Sonoko Suzuki]] attended. Tomoaki had studied at the University of Tokyo; during this time, he had treated a young woman named [[Hikaru Yasumoto]], who was later hired into the Araide household as a maid.

When Yoshiteru Araide invited Kogoro Mouri, his daughter Ran and [[Conan Edogawa]] to dinner in his house, Conan noticed that Ran was paying a lot of unusual attention on Araide. The sojourn, however, quickly turned into a murder case as Yoshiteru Araide was found electrocuted in his bathtub. The murderer turned out to be Yoko Araide, Araide's wife and Tomoaki's stepmother, who had avenged the suicide of her dear friend Chiaki (Tomoaki's mother) over her husband's extramarital affairs four years previously. Kogoro Mouri visits Ariade clinic with Ran and Kogoro in tow to receive the results of his health checkup from his doctor Yoshiteru Araide. Ran is looking for the bathroom when she meets Araide Tomoaki, 25 years old, temporarily working for his father’s clinic until he moves to Beika hospital. Tomoaki Araide’s father was then killed in his bathtub via electrocution. Detective Takagi, Inspector Megure, and other nameless policemen investigate the murder.

Conan investigates and discovers Yoko Araide, Yoshiteru Araide's second wife was the murder. She caused a blackout to occur while she was supposedly on the phone, and during the ensuing darkness, snuck to the bathtub and put the shaver in the bathtub. She then snuck back and asked the housemaid [[Hikaru Yasumoto]] to flip the circuit breaker, causing Yoshiteru Araide to be electrocuted.

The motive was that Dr. Araide’s mom, Chiaki died four years ago, while drunk driving, although she is supposed to have hated alcohol. She left a message to Yoko Araide to “Please take care of Tomoaki. Don’t let him follow his dad.” A journal Yoko found later indicates that Yoshiteru Araide was a flirtatious guy who drove Chiaki to drink. Meanwhile, Ariade becomes very upset that his family is suspected by the police and that a trap was laid (by Conan) to catch the murderer. Araide rushes to the bathroom and overhears “Mouri’s” offer to conceal some of the details of the crime to protect the maid Hikaru’s conscience. This offer proves crucial as Vermouth does not know this detail because the records of investigation were altered to protect the maid’s conscience.

===Teitan High School's Ghost Story (Manga: 457-459, Anime: 361-362)===
Dr. Araide returns and helps with a school ghost mystery case. He seems to only know the basic details of Vermouth's impersonation, which he was the victim of. He states that he was in Japan two years ago when he treated a student who fell down some stairs. Araide attempts to examine “sleeping detective” Sonoko, and is waived off by Conan.

Araide seems surprised when Ran says he is nice and in the end he gets a call from Jodie. Araide says he is surprised how well liked the disguised Vermouth’s Araide was based on the testimony of the students and teachers and asks Jodie if Vermouth is really a bad person. Jodie becomes exceedingly grumpy and yells at Araide that Vermouth was only copying Araide's personality.

A missing girl caught in a hit and run leads the detective boys to Araide’s hospital. Araide then starts raising two stray kittens while seeking new owners for them.

Natsuki is apparently a capable investigator; however, as the Detective Koshien Case has proven, she tends to be extremely stubborn and single-minded if a case touches her personally, and she pursues the culprit(s) relentlessly until they are brought to justice. Though she is by no means a thoroughly evil person, but actually a gentle and considerate character, her persistance does tend to cloud her judgement at times. On her plus side, she is a careful planner and strategist, as well as being a natural actress.

== Plot overview ==
One year before Natsuki's first appearance, and a year after she had finished high school, a wealthy socialite was found hanged inside her manor house. The police and Natsuki concluded at first that she must have committed suicide (as she really had), but some time later [[Junya Tokitsu]], another high school detective, appeared on the scene and declared that her death was actually a murder. This was a serious misconception, as Junya had fallen for a trick prepared by a burglar ''after'' the murder, but it was enough for the police to open a murder investigation. The only suspect in the case was the lady's young housemaid, Natsuki's best friend. She was repeatedly and harshly questioned by the police, and even though no conclusive evidence could be brought up against her, the girl cracked under the strain and eventually committed suicide.<ref>Manga Chapter 566: ''[[Volume 55#Detective Koshien Case|Detective Koshien Case]]''</ref>

Because Junya later realized that his deduction had been false, he asked to remain anonymous, and so Natsuki had only few scant clues to work with as she set out to avenge her friend's death. She finally decided to arrange a fake detectives' reality TV competition (''Detective Koushien''), with the most reputable High School Detectives attending; next to Junya and herself, this included [[Heiji Hattori]] and [[Shinichi Kudo]] (who could attend only as [[Conan Edogawa]]), and [[Saguru Hakuba]], who had been asked to fill in for Shinichi. She arranged for her trap to be sprung on a remote island, cutting off all connections to the mainland while she sought to find the culprit.

Natsuki finally worked out that Junya was the person responsible and killed him by bashing his head with a hammer when he demonstrated his callousness and self-interest about the past case with no feelings of remorse whatsoever. She also trapped herself and her entourage on the island to die of starvation, since two of them - the burglar who had unintentionally backed up Junya's claims, by using the trick he discovered, to try stealing from the manor; and the manor's butler who had refused to clear the case out of misguided affection for the lady, since he didn't want people to know she was mentally ill due to the huge prejudices against mental illnesses in Japan - were also (if more indirectly) responsible for her friend's death. == Background ==

Some twenty years ago, when Jodie was still just a little girl, [[Sharon Vineyard|Vermouth]] killed her parents, who had been working on the [[Black Organization]] for the FBI. Vermouth was surprised to find her in her house, and after Jodie had asked what was going on, Vermouth told her to wait by her father until he woke up, and that "a secret makes a woman woman". She then set the house ablaze, thus destroying any evidence that she had been there, along with the corpses of Jodie's parents and any records about the Black Organization. Fortunately, Jodie had decided to run down the street to the store to buy her father some orange juice, and had thus survived. She was put under protection by the FBI, although she declined the Witness Protection Program, and eventually became an FBI agent herself under the tutelage and patronage of [[James Black]]. The only remaining memento from her past is the set of glasses she wears, which had originally belonged to her father.

Jodie appears around the same time as Vermouth as Ran's new English teacher at Teitan High under the name of "Jodie Saintemillion". She comes off as somewhat strange, and refers to Conan as "Cool Kid", which caused fans to believe that she knew his secret. (In fact, she now knows he's an incredible detective, but it is unclear if she knows his true identity). She is noted for often using the phrase of her enemy, Vermouth ('A secret makes a woman woman'). In episode 226-227 Jodie, after watching Conan suspiciously, informs someone over the phone that she has found their target, whom she refers to as "Rotten Apple".

First indications of Jodie's FBI training are shown during the confrontation with the bus hijackers. She stealthily turns on the safety to one of the hijacker's guns, while knocking him down thus he cannot shoot it when he attempts to fire at her. She appears later in 271-272 and gives Conan information that allows him to solve the case. In episodes 277-278, she is investigated by Conan and Heiji, both believing her to be Vermouth in disguise, as she appears to know they are both detectives despite being foreign to Japan, and even helps them solve a cese in the same episode.

It is not until her personal confrontation with Vermouth that Jodie's past and true identity as an FBI agent is revealed, as well as the real reason she's in Japan and the person she's looking for. She is tracking down Vermouth, and after a brief confrontation with her, Jodie is rescued by Conan and her colleague [[Shuichi Akai]]. Following this, she offers Ai a place in the Witness Protection Program, but Ai declines. She does not appear again until when she helps Conan prevent an assassination plot of a politician orchestrated by the Black Organization and the subsequent capture and hospitalization of the BO member Kir.

Jodie has been heavily involved in the BO arc episodes 492-504, which has involved the BO and the FBI. The death of her partner, Akai, takes a very emotional toll on her. As it later turns out, they used to be lovers before Akai infiltrated the Black Organization by dating [[Akemi Miyano]], with whom he eventually became more intensely involved. Still, despite their breakup Jodie does maintain strong feelings for him.<ref name=Akai>Manga Chapter 677: The Fated Individual</ref>. When a man who looks like Shuichi Akai appears, Jodie is convinced that the stranger is her partner who has lost his memory, but he is gone before she can affirm her suspicion.

Jodie usually is a very serene person, but also has demonstrated a very playful and carefree side (as it is seen when she is Ran's English teacher). She often says "just like in the movies", to imply that she is in fact American and watches a lot of movies. Jodie considers [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] her "favorite detective," knowing that he is no ordinary boy. She always takes him seriously, and lets him help her in figuring out plans.
