<spoiler>Conan solves the case and reveals that the culprit manufactured their alibi by (incorrectly) imitating the noise of the fireworks going off and tried to deflect suspicion from themselves by writing the bloody S using the victim's finger. He reveals that the S was not the real code, but the phone was: except for Oda, all of the friends (including the now deceased Narita, who was once part of this group) had last names that correspond to cities with airports in them. The police on the scene realize that since the message is "KIX" (the airport code of the [[Wikipedia: Kansai International Airport|Kansai International Airport]], located in Izumisano), that means the culprit is '''Izumi Sano'''. The proof that she committed the murder lay in the blades of her ice skates, where she'd stepped in the victim's blood without realizing that she had done so. When confronted with this proof, the murderer confesses: she killed Chihiro for dating Narita then ruthlessly dumping him, driving him to suicide (but the other friends thought he'd simply had a fatal accident). Before he killed himself he told the murderer, believing the victim to have been two-timing with his best friend Kunitomo Oda. Oda reveals it was a misunderstanding and that Chihiro was lying about them having a relationship as the one he truly love is Izumi herself, leaving the murderer silenced.</spoiler>

== Differences between the manga and anime==
* Due to the brutal nature of the murder, the expression of Chihiro is changed to be more peaceful, and her eyes are closed, compared to the manga. This type of censorship would later be used in various cases, such as the innocent victim in [[Sonoko's Dangerous Summer Story]], and is fully used from [[A Small Client]] onward in the anime with a small exception in [[Bathroom Where Ran Collapsed As Well]] due to plot reason.

Heiji is asked by Kasukawa to investigate a man who is lurking near the house of Ryoko Morozumi. An arsonist, dubbed the Red Horse after the red horse figurines he leaves behind at the fires, has been burning precincts in order. With the first three having already experienced a fire, and Ryoko's house being on the fourth precinct, they suspect the strange man to be the arsonist. While Kogoro, Conan, and Heiji stalk the house, it catches fire in the middle of the night.

There are four suspected to be the arsonist: A salesmen named Takanori Genda, Ryoko's paramour and a Feng shui reader Misao Soga, Ryoko's sister Keiko Gondo, and Ryoko's husband Akira Morozumi. Since the latter three have established alibi's, this leaves Genda as their prime suspect.

==== The Investigation ====
Ran and Kazuha receive a red horse from Genda on the way home. Kogoro realizes that Genda plans to burn the Mouri Detective Agency with Ran and Kazuha in it and rushes home to find out that Genda had been arrested. Ran explains that Genda appeared at the agency asking for the red horse back since it will cause the building to be set ablaze and she called the police due to his strange behavior. Conan and Heiji suspect that while Genda was the cause of the first three fires, the fourth fire might have been created to murder Ryoko while placing the blame on Genda. Conan and Heiji investigate and realize that Genda has been experience psychological problems and that the other three suspects could have manipulated him to cause the fires. They investigate Ryoko's house and realize how the fire was started.

After investigating Genda's home, they found out that there were covert listening devices planted by Soga and Gondo and realize who the culprit is.

<spoiler>That night, the three culprits enter Genda's house with Soga and Gondo retrieving their listening devices in a Feng Shui vase and zabuton cushion respectively. Apparently they had Genda as a client and committed fraud to trick him into using their services more often. Heiji and Conan confront '''Akira Morozumi''' before he could start the fifth fire and declares him as the culprit. They reveal that Akira, Genda's psychiatrist, made him believe he was starting the fire but in reality, the first fire was an accident while the other three were done by Akira. The owner of the house, where the first fire occurred was a customer of Genda and had gotten a key chain from him. But the fire broke and burned both the box and Guan Yu, leaving only the horse. The owner never got to open the box, so he honestly testified that he never saw the horse before. And because 'Red Horse' was an old police slang for 'Arsonist', everyone jump to the conclusion that it was the beginning of a serial arsonist. Genda recognized the horse in the paper, but was confused that the owner claimed to not have seen it, so he became confused and sought out dr. Akira Morozumi, thinking that he had begin sleepwalking again. Akira saw an opportunity to burn his wife's family home by using Genda as a scapegoat. Heiji reveals that Akira started the fourth fire by wrapping a light bulb with sheets of paper and placing a match in between the sheets. When it reached a certain temperature, the match would ignite and start the fire. The evidence to convict him is the fingerprints found on a key lock holder at the scene of the crime owned by Genda. His wife rejected purchasing from Genda when first encountered so he is the only one who could have made the purchase of the Red Hare figurine. Akira emotionally rants he killed his wife because she was having an affair with Soga and more importantly that she refused to have her inherited estate be converted into a new psychiatric clinic. The reason why Ryoko had rejected the detectives, was because she had figured out what her husband was doing and tried to blackmail him into a divorce. Akira is later arrested and Genda is released from custody.</spoiler>
