== Background ==

Of course, while Akemi lived a normal life, Ai was sent to America as a small child to go to school and was groomed to finish her parents' research <ref> File 384-386 Volume 38 File 2-4</ref>. She was born to an English mother, Elena Miyano, and a Japanese father, Atsushi Miyano. Both of whom were members of the organization, and deceased. A prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project for the organization. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Organization.<ref>Akai started infiltrating the Org five years ago. He did so by becoming Akemi’s girlfriend in order to get close to Shiho and use her influence to get in. Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound [[APTX 4869]]. She discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that a rare few of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect when they used it on [[Shinichi Kudo]], the Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. Shiho searched Shinichi's house twice after he had been shrunk to confirm his death for the Black Organization. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation after she searched his house for a second time and found that his clothes from primary school were missing. Shiho then confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him after all.

With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 to commit suicide, but instead shrunk into a seven or eight year old girl. In her new smaller body, she escaped from the Black Organization and attempted to reach Shinichi's house, hoping he may be able to help her. As Ai Haibara she acts older than she is supposed to be, which the Shounen Tantei refer to her as "cool". But despite her jaded demeanor, she has shown to be kind and caring at occasion, though usually more to animals than people. She's a bit quiet, though this may be due to her caution to keep herself hidden from the Black Organization. She is sometimes cold and very analytical, but there are times where she softens her demeanor and reveals herself to be a true friend. In fact, she considers Conan and the Detective Boys as the first real friends she has ever had, and is even willing to sacrifice herself just to ensure their safety.<ref>Manga Chapters 289: Bus Hijacking Case</ref><ref>Manga Chapters 434: Rotten Apple Case</ref>

Shiho is generally a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (in the film ''Countdown to Heaven'', she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Her greatest fear is being caught by the [[Black Organization]], and she is especially terrified of [[Gin]]. Smart, stubborn, and with a somewhat twisted sense of humor, she tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions that usually result in his gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret.

=== Introduction of Ai Haibara ===
Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives, and Conan realizes it's at Agasa's home.

After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of Natsume Sōseki. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya.

The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.

On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she's a girl named Shiho Miyano, former member of the Black Organization. She actualy betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869 which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister... which is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirokura; Shirokura after bludgeoning Hirota to death tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made and subsequently bringing the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirokura's fingerprints should be found on the tape.

Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Later that day, Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk only to have a virus delete all the data.

=== The first head to head battle arc ===

Ai is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar, but turns into an adult after she drinks [[baijiu]]. Despite wearing glasses and janitor clothing, Gin and Vodka recognize her and shoot her repeatedly until Conan appears. He shoots Gin with his needle, but Gin doesn't fall asleep. He tells Ai to jump into the chimmey, and Vodka shoots at him, but he gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm due to trying to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills her, but Conan rescues her after Pisco accidentally causes a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before he's able to tell him the truth about Shiho. Worried that the organization is after her, Ai decides to leave the city.

=== The Desperate Revival arc ===
During the Desperate Revival episodes, Conan finds out that Ran suspects him of being Shinichi, due to Ran knowing Conan's blood type (for a blood transfusion). While Conan is in the hospital contemplating about admitting his identity, Haibara enters at night and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found Haibara out due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had as a child. However, she pulls the trigger and a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point; that both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation.

During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a prototype antidote for the shrinking drug and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.

At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara knocks him out using the sleeping needle. She then switches Shinichi into Conan's clothes after the antidote runs out.

=== A new threat: Vermouth, and the carjacking incident ===
Aside from Gin and Vodka being the most recurring members, a female member introduced late into the series named Vermouth also starts to play a huge role in the series. She makes her first appearance in episodes 176-178, but her talents aren't revealed until episode 230. She disguises herself as a doctor named Araide and is one of the few characters that learns who Conan really is. In one episode she is saved by Ran and Shinichi from falling through a fire escape, and keeps his secret unknown from the rest possibly because of this reason. She disguises herself as two actresses, Chris Vineyard and Sharon Vineyard. It is noted several times in the series that she is a master of disguise, who trained with Shinichi's mother in the past.

=== The second head to head battle, and revealed allegiances ===
[[Image:Episode_345_Screencap.jpg‎|thumb|right|180px|Encounter with Vermouth.]] In episode 345, many identities are finally unveiled: Vermouth is revealed to be Dr. Araide, Chris Vineyard, [[Sharon Vineyard]], and the silver-haired serial killer in Shinichi's New York Case; Jodie Saintemillion is revealed to be an undercover FBI agent working towards capturing Vermouth, who killed her father when she was younger; Akai Shuichi is confirmed to be an FBI agent, and one with great skill too--enough to make the boss of the Black Organization believe that he is their ''Silver Bullet.'' Near the end of the episode, it becomes clear that Vermouth's purpose was to seek and eliminate Sherry, but her attempts are thwarted by several people: Shinichi/Conan, Jodie Saintemillion, Akai Shuichi, and even Ran. When she becomes cornered, she takes Conan hostage and drives away into a forest. There, she makes a call to her boss (still nameless), and to her surprise, Conan was recording the entire conversation. In order to preserve the organization's secrecy, she sprays sleeping gas in the car, putting both herself and Conan to sleep. She claims that this would be a duel--whoever wakes up first will win. Vermouth does indeed wake up first, but does not kill Conan. Instead, she just crushes his recording device. Ultimately, the only clue Conan gained from this whole ordeal is the ringtone that the boss uses; this is mentioned in episode 425 as well, although its importance has not yet been revealed.

In Episode 394, Conan figures out the boss's number, but Haibara warns him not to call it because it is "[[Pandora's Box]]", Conan then thinks he can get officer Takagi to figure out who the number belongs to. But then Haibara warns if he does, officer Takagi will be killed.

Although Vermouth often comes off as evil and malicious, her allegiance is rather ambiguous. She chooses to protect both Conan/Shinichi and Ran, most likely because they let her live back in the New York Case when she was disguised as the silver-haired serial killer. At the end of the episode, she could have very well killed Shinichi, but instead she lets him live and even drapes her coat over his sleeping body so he wouldn't get cold. She even kept her promise with Shinichi to stop her attempt on killing Sherry/Shiho. For some reason, she seems to wish for the Black Organization to be taken down as well--for she believes that Kudo Shinichi is their true ''Silver Bullet.''

As Conan and Ai investigate a normal case, Ai feels that an organization member is around. The organization member which she felt is implied to be one of the innocent suspects, [[Okiya Subaru]]. Conan invites Okiya to live in the Kudou house since Okiya's apartment was burnt. Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a [[scar Akai|scarred Akai Shuichi]]. Despite the apparent implications, [[Bourbon]]'s true identity and Okiya's true motivations remain unconfirmed. At the end of episode 543 (Anime), Okiya Subaru can be seen drinking a bottle of Baker's Mark, which is a brand of Kentucky Bourbon.

Ai Haibara seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for [[Conan]]/[[Shinichi]], although she never truly admits to it. In the fourth movie, she says to Conan that she wished she could forget her memories about the Black Organization and the death of her sister and the pill, claiming that all she wants to be was a normal little girl and live together with Conan forever. But then as Conan was shocked by the words, Ai immediately said she was lying. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friend or otherwise. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence, she finds it easier to talk to him. Also, he is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down.

==== Hiroshi Agasa ====
The relationship between Ai and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite what their actual ages are, Ai often times acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occassions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach<ref name=Depths>[[Strategy Above the Depths|Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths]]</ref>, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. There's also been instances where she'll automatically step in front of Agasa in cases of danger.<ref name=Eyes>[[Captured in Her Eyes|Movie 4: Captured in Her Eyes]]</ref> Out of all the people she's met, Ai seems most comfortable about acting herself with the Professor; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the BO, and took her in.

There are instances where Haibara will caution Conan from actions that involve [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], though it's assumed this is due merely to the fact that she wants to keep her identity hidden. At one point, she was very cold and distant towards Ran, just like she was to most other people. Ran believed that it was because that Haibara had hated her.<ref name=Net>[[The Mystery in the Net|Episode 246-247: The Mystery in the Net]]</ref> However, later that day, Haibara finally properly introduced herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends. Haibara finds that Ran resembles her older sister, Akemi Miyano, so she takes special interest in protecting her. Haibara has tried to keep an emotional distance away from the rest of the Detective Boys since the beginning. However, over time, she can't resist their friendliness anymore and gradually warms up to them.

At one time, Ayumi noticed that she called everyone by their first names except for Haibara and decided to try and call her "Ai-chan", but without success. At the end of a case which involved a shattered friendship, Haibara told Ayumi that it was okay for her to call her "Ai-chan". Sometimes everyone thinks both Conan and Ai have a special relation and friendship that nobody would understand. This is particularly true for members of the Detective Boys who often try to question their relationship.

== Relationship analysis ==

It is shown in several manga chapters and anime episodes that Haibara gives hints about liking Conan. However, whenever Conan asks her about it, she always claims to be joking. Fans think she is trying to hide her pain on the fact that he likes [[Ran Mouri|Ran]].

For example, during [[The Mysterious Passenger]] episodes, Haibara chose to stay on the bus (which contained a bomb) in an attempt to suicide so she wouldn't have to worry about her future or the Black Organization anymore. Conan rushed back into the bus at risk of his own life and saved her, telling her to not run away from her destiny. Conan was injured in the process and used his blood to give the police a reason to send Haibara to the hospital, possibly as a way to keep an eye on her. It is also noted that Conan may have thought a Black Organization member was onboard the bus, so he tried to send her away.

Some fans can make parallels of Conan and Ai's relationship with that of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adlers. Much like how Conan nor Ai explicitly say they "love" each other; Sherlock Holmes's "love" for Irene Adler is never directly stated. Sherlock Holmes, according to Watson, "respects" Irene Adler; like how Conan seems to "respect" Ai (in a way).
There is also the fact that Irene Adler was the only woman ever to have bested Holmes-- in all of the episodes of Detective Conan, it seems there is never a woman (or person, for that matter) to have outwitted Conan/Shinichi-- you could say Ai, has come the closest, with her and Conan being of the same level of intelligence, and during episode 411, Ai and Dr. Agasa come up with a riddle for the Detective Boys, and it seems Conan can't figure it out (for he lacks the motivation), and Ai seems particulary pleased about it. When Conan drops her off nearby her home, Ai immediatley stops crying and then brings about a drug called "APTX 4869". Conan is confused, as Ai continues to ramble about the drug, how he took it, and how she did also. It is apparent that Ai isn't just your average little girl. It is not until Ai tells Conan that she's occupied the Professor's house and that he's "not in this world anymore", that Conan begins to freak out. He tries to call the Professor but does not get an answer, while Ai smirks evily in the background (she's got the upperhand, at the moment). Conan then leaves Ai behind and sprints to the Professor's house, hoping to find him safe.

* Later on, Conan, Ai and the Professor come across another case. One involving the locked-room-murder of a University Professor. After Conan solves the case, the Professor and Conan decide to head back home. When Conan gestures for Ai to come along, we see a tear roll down her face as she asks why he didn't help her sister. To answer a confused Conan's face, Ai explains (still in tears) that Hirota Misami was a fake name her sister took from the now-deceased University Professor, and Conan realizes that the same girl (from the previous episode)who died during the one-billion-yen robbery case. And Ai continues to shout at a stunned Conan, with all his deducing skills, he should've been able to see right through her sister's case. Ai breaks down and falls on her knees in front of Conan and clutches his shirt and continues to cry into it. The unfeeling boy, unlike a normal sympathetic human being, denies the very-teary Ai Haibara clutching onto him like she was his only life line (in a way, he was) the hug she very well deserved. But Conan silently thinks to himself: "This is probably the first true face she's ever showed me."

Sometimes everyone thinks both Conan and Ai have a special relation and friendship that nobody would understand. This is particularly true for members of the Detective Boys who often try to question their relationship.

== Relationship analysis ==

It is shown in several manga chapters and anime episodes that Haibara gives hints about liking Conan. However, whenever Conan asks her about it, she always claims to be joking. Fans think she is trying to hide her pain on the fact that he likes [[Ran Mouri|Ran]].

Conan rushed back into the bus at risk of his own life and saved her, telling her to not run away from her destiny. Conan was injured in the process and used his blood to give the police a reason to send Haibara to the hospital, possibly as a way to keep an eye on her. It is also noted that Conan may have thought a Black Organization member was onboard the bus, so he tried to send her away.

Some fans can make parallels of Conan and Ai's relationship with that of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adlers. Much like how Conan nor Ai explicitly say they "love" each other; Sherlock Holmes's "love" for Irene Adler is never directly stated. Sherlock Holmes, according to Watson, "respects" Irene Adler; like how Conan seems to "respect" Ai (in a way).

Sometimes everyone thinks both Conan and Ai have a special relation and friendship that nobody would understand. This is particularly true for members of the Detective Boys who often try to question their relationship.

== Relationship analysis ==

It is shown in several manga chapters and anime episodes that Haibara gives hints about liking Conan. However, whenever Conan asks her about it, she always claims to be joking. Fans think she is trying to hide her pain on the fact that he likes [[Ran Mouri|Ran]].

[[Image:Conan_saves_Haibara.JPG‎|thumb|right|220|Conan rescues Haibara from the explosion.]] Conan tries to protect and save Haibara if anything happens to her. For example, during [[The Mysterious Passenger]] episodes, Haibara chose to stay on the bus (which contained a bomb) in an attempt to suicide so she wouldn't have to worry about her future or the Black Organization anymore. Conan rushed back into the bus at risk of his own life and saved her, telling her to not run away from her destiny. Conan was injured in the process and used his blood to give the police a reason to send Haibara to the hospital, possibly as a way to keep an eye on her. It is also noted that Conan may have thought a Black Organization member was onboard the bus, so he tried to send her away.

Some fans can make parallels of Conan and Ai's relationship with that of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adlers. Much like how Conan nor Ai explicitly say they "love" each other; Sherlock Holmes's "love" for Irene Adler is never directly stated. Sherlock Holmes, according to Watson, "respects" Irene Adler; like how Conan seems to "respect" Ai (in a way).
There is also the fact that Irene Adler was the only woman ever to have bested Holmes-- in all of the episodes of Detective Conan, it seems there is never a woman (or person, for that matter) to have outwitted Conan/Shinichi-- you could say Ai, has come the closest, with her and Conan being of the same level of intelligence, and during episode 411, Ai and Dr. Agasa come up with a riddle for the Detective Boys, and it seems Conan can't figure it out (for he lacks the motivation), and Ai seems particulary pleased about it. Eventually, to Ai's disappointment, Conan figures out the riddle. Ai also managed to trick Conan on their first meeting.

=== (Episode 129) [[The Girl from the Black Organization and the University Professor Murder Case]] - [[Volume 18]] File 6 ~ [[Volume 19]] File 1 ===
* Upon Ai's arrival at Teitan Elementary School, Genta eagerly offers the seat next to him for her to sit in. But as Ai walks towards the desks, she brushes right past Genta and takes the empty seat next to Conan, and in monotone says to him: "Nice to meet you." Shocking Conan, the only thing he can manage to say is: "Yeah..."

* After class is over, the Detective Boys try to catch up with Ai in the hallway, wanting to ask her to walk home with them. Ai ignores all of Ayumi's attempts to talk to her until she inquires about her address, to which she replies: "22 Beika Block, Second Street." Conan regards the address as familiar and remarks to himself that her house can't be too far away from where his is. Ai then looks over her shoulder and smirks at him, again shocking Conan and causing a small blush to appear right above his nose. Genta notices and asks him if he "likes that stuck-up woman". Which Conan quickly denies.

* When Ayumi and Mitsuhiko are telling Ai about the Detective Boys, she asks if "Edogawa-kun is in it too?". Shortly after, the Detective Boys come across a case, where a fellow classmate's older brother has been missing and wants to find him.

* After solving said case, and Ai fires a gun through a window, causing her to get a scolding from Megure-keibu, and fake-crying (impressively well) to get out of it, Conan walks Ai back home to her house, where she is still crying. When Conan drops her off nearby her home, Ai immediatley stops crying and then brings about a drug called "APTX 4869". Conan is confused, as Ai continues to ramble about the drug, how he took it, and how she did also. It is apparent that Ai isn't just your average little girl. It is not until Ai tells Conan that she's occupied the Professor's house and that he's "not in this world anymore", that Conan begins to freak out. He tries to call the Professor but does not get an answer, while Ai smirks evily in the background (she's got the upperhand, at the moment). Conan then leaves Ai behind and sprints to the Professor's house, hoping to find him safe.

* Later on, Conan, Ai and the Professor come across another case. One involving the locked-room-murder of a University Professor. After Conan solves the case, the Professor and Conan decide to head back home. When Conan gestures for Ai to come along, we see a tear roll down her face as she asks why he didn't help her sister. To answer a confused Conan's face, Ai explains (still in tears) that Hirota Misami was a fake name her sister took from the now-deceased University Professor, and Conan realizes that the same girl (from the previous episode)who died during the one-billion-yen robbery case. And Ai continues to shout at a stunned Conan, with all his deducing skills, he should've been able to see right through her sister's case. Ai breaks down and falls on her knees in front of Conan and clutches his shirt and continues to cry into it. The unfeeling boy, unlike a normal sympathetic human being, denies the very-teary Ai Haibara clutching onto him like she was his only life line (in a way, he was) the hug she very well deserved. But Conan silently thinks to himself: "This is probably the first true face she's ever showed me."

Near the end of the second part of this case, Ai stares off into the distance after conan made a joke about her being 84 years old. She tells him "I'm only eighteen, about a year older than you. Maybe someday..." before she stares off into the distance again.

Conan Edogawa gets lost in a castle where the Detective Boys are staying at and when every one tries to look for him it starts raining.
Ai tells Ayumi to stop crying and that "Edogawa-kun isn't the type to make you worry. He'll come back himself." then comments on Ayumi's bag and about not letting her tears enter it. Ayumi replies, "Hey how do you know Conan-kun so well..."
Ai replies, "Come on. Why do you ask?"
"Is it because you like him, right?"
Ai, surprised but recovers, asks, "What if I do?"
Ayumi replies, "Then...I'm in trouble..." implying that there will be a love triangle if she does.
Ai sees Ayumi is worried and does not want to mess with her anymore and plainly states she does not have those kinds of feelings for him.

=== (Episode 138-139) [[The Final Screening Murder Case]] - [[Volume 23]] File 1~File 3 ===

At the start of the second Gomera movie, Ayumi falls asleep and puts her head on Conan's shoulder. When Conan turns to Ai saying he needs to use the restroom and asks her if she would switch seats, she puts her head on Conan's shoulder too, having fallen asleep as well.

*The episodes opens with Ai and Conan in what looks to be an abandonned and empty room. Ai tells him that she (possibly referring to Ran) has found out about his identity, when he asks her why she's telling him all this, she tells him that she can see into the hearts of the wicked, but he couldn't understand a woman's heart, then tells him she's been in love with him since she met him. We see Conan's face, but it doesn't appear to be at all surprised, and Ai continues with: "I guess you didn't even notice.. . Kamen Yaiba-san." After Mitsuhiko yells out "CUT!", it is revealed that both Conan and Ai were merely acting, and practicing lines for Teitan Elementary School's play, with Mitsuhiko as the director.

While Conan was lying in a hospital bed after a blood transfusion, Ai snuck into his room and held a gun at him. She told him that the Organization would accept her back if she killed him and everyone else related to him. She then pulled the trigger, but it turned out that it was a fake gun that shot red roses from the barrel. Symbolically, red roses represent love or passion, suggesting that Ai might have romantic feelings towards Conan.

Ai was petrified because she felt a familiar and scary presence from [[Black Organization]] around. (She was right because Vermouth was disguised as Dr. Araide at that time) When Jodie asked Conan for her name, she grabbed onto his hand desperately and he understood her fear, simply saying she was a random girl he happened to sit next to.

Later on, knowing she would be interrogated in front of everyone, she wanted to stay on the bus and let go of life as she felt she would always put other people in her surroundings in danger. But Conan came back to save her by grabbing her and jumping out of the bus before it exploded. He wiped his blood onto her so that she can leave the place. He tells her that she shouldn't escape from her destiny. [[Jodie Starling]] said he looked like James Bond.

Ai was in a miserable mood throughout the 2 episodes. However, Ayumi, Genta and Mitsuhiko cheered her up and Ai was happy again. As she was smiling, Conan makes a comment saying that she should continue to smile like that because that makes her look like a child. She blushes from the comment until Conan says the wrong joke that she was 90 years old (she corrected him that she is 84 yrs old with scorn)

* In [[Secret of the Tohto Film Making Centre|Episode 335]], Conan's mother, [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko]], tells him that he seems to be popular with girls.<ref>[[Secret of the Tohto Film Making Centre|Episode 335-336: Secret of the Tohto Film Making Centre]]</ref> Conan automatically assumes his mother is implying [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]] likes him, and he was already aware of such, but Yukiko replies saying that not only Ayumi but [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] too, saying: "She's looked your way about 10 times already," and continues: "There's only two reasons for a girl to look at a boy like that: he has something on his face or she likes him." Conan is shocked and insists she'd probably only been looking at him to see how the "test subject" for APTX 4869 was doing. Despite this, Conan later tests Haibara, otherwise.

* Before Yukiko left the Detective Boys, Conan and Haibara she's quick to remind Conan to: "never leave her side," before she drives off. To which Conan irritably replies: "I know, I know."

Conan and Haibara are sleeping side-by-side. When he is unable to go to sleep because of Genta and Mitsuhiko's loud, audible questions, Haibara calmly reminds him: "it can't be helped; they're just kids, not like us." Conan then takes this opportunity to ask her a question, as the scene grows quiet. Conan solemnly closes his eyes as the fringe on his hair shifts downward his forehead he asks if he can ask her something. She does not reply verbally but turns her head around, as she had her back to him before, to listen. Conan then asks: "Is there something on my face?" with something of an "Oi-Oi" face. Haibara responds with a similar look, but appears to be confused.

In a scene, Haibara wants to know who Conan was talking to on his phone (she thinks it was the FBI). Conan says back, "It's not like a case (jiken) happened or something..." Ayumi eavesdrops and says surprisingly, "It's an affair (jiken)! An affair between Conan-kun and Ai-chan!?" Since jiken could also mean affair. They stared at Ayumi with bewildered and surprised faces.

Haibara admitted that she wanted to forget about everything and always be with Conan "forever, just like this", which shocked him. However, she immediately said she was joking to make Conan feel better.

During the case Ai found a footprint around the back of the shop. Conan then asks her to take a picture of it for him. She replies "Since when did I become your assistant?" he then said "Not assistant, Partner."
