After the Bell Tree Express incident, Sonoko invites Ran, Kogoro, and Conan to a campsite where she is learning tennis, because she got a text from Makoto holding a tennis racket. Conan, glad to be leaving the Mouri Detective Agency after learning Amuro is Bourbon, finds out he is Sonoko's tennis teacher. Amuro tries to warn Conan that a racket is about to hit him, but it hits his head and knocks him unconsciosu. Amuro applies immediate first aid, and Conan recuperates at the cabin of Machi Umejima and her friend Kotone Momozono, the girl whose racket went flying and hit Conan. As Machi and Kotone treats Conan's party, there is an obvious animosity between Noboru Takanashi and Saburou Ishiguri, two other friends and classmates. It stems from the untimely death of their friend Uriu. When Conan wakes up, he finds the room overwhelmingly hot and Saburou dead from blunt force trauma to the head.

<spoiler>As Conan was about to tranquilize Kogoro, Amuro looked through his lens and asked what was he doing. Conan, not wanting Bourbon to realize who he really is, instead manipulated everyone's attention to the culprit: '''Kotone Momozono'''. Kotone hid a spare key to the room in a bottle of a frozen sports drink, had it thaw a bit, then used it to commit the murder. She used the still melting ice of the hard bottle to move his body in front of the door. She did it because Uriu, who was an easily emotional guy, would've been afraid to go in the snow. But Saburou made a joke about the snow Uriu took seriously, and died. At first, Kotone thought Saburou's frantic digging in the snow was from disbelief a friend died. But he was retrieving the scarf Uriu worn, as it was evidence he was forced over and didn't simply jump.

Later that night, Bourbon gives Vermouth a call, saying the case was solved but will stay around little longer. When she asks him why, he says the Sleeping Kogoro has caught his interest, while thinking of Conan, hinting he knows Conan is behind the Sleeping Kogoro persona.</spoiler>

The Governor of Tokyo, Yuichiro Asakura, receives a threatening letter the day before the opening of Touto Line, a new train line for the Tokyo Metropolitan Subway. During the opening ceremony of the line, [[Conan Edogawa]] and the [[Detective Boys]] are driven by [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] and pass under the Touto Line. Conan, having heard about the threatening letter, notices explosives connected to the rails. Using his original voice to inform the police as [[Shinichi Kudo]], he is able to stop the train and divert traffic away from the explosives, preventing any deaths.

Conan researches Asakura's political history for a clue on the culprit and learns that the governor was in charge of the construction of a dam in Kitanosawa, a town in the Niigata Prefecture. Due to the dam's construction, the citizens of Kitanosawa were forced into a new town and their old homes were submerged underwater. Since Asakura's trip to celebrate the anniversary of the dam is canceled by the bombing, Conan speculates information on the bomber could be found in Kitanosawa and plans a trip there.

Conan, the Detective Boys, [[Ran Mouri]], [[Kogoro Mouri]], and [[Sonoko Suzuki]] travel to Kitanosawa and enjoy the day playing. They are introduced to a group of locals; their names are Keisuke Yamao, Mizuki Tono, Fuyumi Tachihara, Takehiki Muto, and Shogo Hikawa. The group reveals they were all childhood friends and were part of the group which relocated to the new village. They also reveal its their first gathering in eight years since Yamao was in prison for killing Tono's younger sister, Natsuki Tono, in a hit and run.

The next day, Tachihara's son, Touma Tachihara, awakens from his eight year coma with no memory of his accident. Later that day, Hikawa is found dead in a field.

It is assumed to be suicide since only Hikawa's footprints were found in the snow. Conan reveals Hikawa was killed by an electroshock weapon. The culprit then waited for it to snow and walked away backwards to suggest Hikawa was alone. During a diamond dust caused by the sunrise, Touma experiences a flashback to the day of the accident.

Conan investigates Hikawa's belongings and finds a newspaper clipping detailing a jewelry store robbery dated the day before the hit and run.

<spoiler>Conan intervenes and leads them to safety. Taking a route towards the dam, Conan explains '''Keisuke Yamao''' is the culprit. Yamao robbed the jewelry store in a distant town and drove back to Kitanosawa. On the way, he ran over Natsuki, a scene which Touma witnessed. Touma is then kidnapped by Yamao and sees the diamonds, explaining why the diamond dust startled his memories. Touma escaped but fell down a cliff leading to his coma. Yamao then buries the jewels in a property in Kitanosawa and turns himself over to the authorities for Natsuki's death. Unexpectedly, the dam project forced the town of Kitanosawa underwater. As a result, Yamao decides to bomb the dam to search old-Kitanosawa for the diamonds. In order to have enough time to perform the search, he had to cancel the Governor's trip and destroy the cell phone towers to prevent the outside world from learning of the dam's destruction.

Upon arriving at the dam, Conan is pursued by Yamao who tortures him and intendes to silence him. Yamao is then shot and incapacitated by Mizuki.

Touma regains his memories of the accident upon seeing Mizuki and reveals he saw Mizuki push Natsuki off into the road during an argument. Mizuki professes she was the sniper attempting to shoot at Touma, in order to prevent him from remembering, and that the death of her sister was an accident. Yamao, having set off the bombs in the dam, forces them to flee. Conan diverges from the group intending to start an avalanche by creating grooves in a steep mountain with his motorized snowboard to divert the flow away from Kitanosawa. He is successful but his motor short-circuits causing him to be caught in the avalanche.

The Governor of Tokyo, Yuichiro Asakura, receives a threatening letter the day before the opening of Touto Line, a new train line for the Tokyo Metropolitan Subway. During the opening ceremony of the line, [[Conan Edogawa]] and the [[Detective Boys]] are driven by [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] and pass under the Touto Line. Conan, having heard about the threatening letter, notices explosives connected to the rails. Using his original voice to inform the police as [[Shinichi Kudo]], he is able to stop the train and divert traffic away from the explosives, preventing any deaths.

Conan researches Asakura's political history for a clue on the culprit and learns that the governor was in charge of the construction of a dam in Kitanosawa, a town in the Niigata Prefecture. Due to the dam's construction, the citizens of Kitanosawa were forced into a new town and their old homes were submerged underwater. Since Asakura's trip to celebrate the anniversary of the dam is canceled by the bombing, Conan speculates information on the bomber could be found in Kitanosawa and plans a trip there.

Conan, the Detective Boys, [[Ran Mouri]], [[Kogoro Mouri]], and [[Sonoko Suzuki]] travel to Kitanosawa and enjoy the day playing. They are introduced to a group of locals; their names are Keisuke Yamao, Mizuki Tono, Fuyumi Tachihara, Takehiki Muto, and Shogo Hikawa. The group reveals they were all childhood friends and were part of the group which relocated to the new village. They also reveal its their first gathering in eight years since Yamao was in prison for killing Tono's younger sister, Natsuki Tono, in a hit and run.

Touma regains his memories of the accident upon seeing Mizuki and reveals he saw Mizuki push Natsuki off into the road during an argument. Mizuki professes she was the sniper attempting to shoot at Touma, only to prevent him from remembering, and that the death of her sister was an accident. Yamao, having set off the bombs in the dam forces them to flee. Conan diverges from the group intending to start an avalanche by creating grooves in a steep mountain with his motorized snowboard to divert the flow away from Kitanosawa. He is successful but his motor short-circuits causing him to be caught in the avalanche.

== Production details ==
Most of the music used in the special was regular background music from the ''[[wikipedia:_Lupin_III|Lupin III]]'' anime series, and the classic ''Lupin III Theme'' was used for the opening and ending themes. The ''Detective Conan Main Theme'' was also used in various scenes focusing on Conan.

Original character designs varied between the [[Wikipedia: Monkey Punch|Monkey Punch]] and [[Gosho Aoyama]] styles.

Because ''Detective Conan'' is considered a family show by Japanese audiences, there was very little adult humor in the special, in contrast to most ''Lupin'' specials. Lupin III himself even points this out in a scene where he is trying to sleep with Fujiko and he breaks the fourth wall by "thanking the regular fanbase for being patient all this time". Also, in the last scene, Jigen and Goemon wonder aloud, "Is this an adult movie?"

During a hunt in her private hunting ground, Queen Sakura, sovereign of the European kingdom of Vespania, is suddenly killed. All indications suggest that she was accidentally shot by her son, Prince Gill, who immediately after the event commits suicide, overcome by guilt. After Prince Gill committed suicide, he was found by his uncle, Duke Gerard, who felt so sad saying that it was too late to stop it.

Therefore, the title of heir to the throne of Vespania passes by Gill to his sister, Princess Mira, a tough nineteen-year-old girl and a bit selfish, who coincidentally resembles [[Ran Mouri]]. The coronation ceremony, however, is threatened by a growing popular movement that believes Princess Mira is unfit to govern; therefore, taking into account the risk to Princess Mira's safety, Count Keith, the chief of commons, makes [[Daisuke Jigen]], former trainer of the regular army, a personal guard of the princess.

Simultaneously, [[Lupin III]] reaches Vespania; his and Jigen's plan is to get their hands on the crown for the queens of the realm, revealing several nice memories for the king of thieves, but it seems clear now that Lupin is pursuing another purpose.

Furthermore, to increase the princess' popularity, it organized a trip to the state in Japan, and the festival is held at the Grand Hotel West City Tama. [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]], [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]], and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] are also at the party. Whenever the announcer asks questions to Princess Mira, she isn't answering because of the tragedy of her mother and brother. Count Keith answers for her instead saying that it's Princess Mira's first time coming to Japan and she loves to eat sushi. Later, when Princess Mira is about to give a toast, Conan exposes the fake sommelier attempting to kill the princess by putting poison in her wine. The fake sommelier runs away but got caught by Kogoro. In the confusion that follows, since the princess wants nothing more than to escape from her condition, she manages to escape, but is noticed by Conan, who follows her trail.

In her escape, she meets Ran Mouri, returning from evening classes, and noting their resemblance the princess decides to trade places with her, so she can gain the thrill of freedom, although her initial thought is to lose all its tracks against Ran. Ran, dressed as the princess, goes back to the hotel and explains what happened, and Count Keith, to avoid leaks that would result in a diplomatic incident with Japan, "forces" Ran to continue to play the role of Mira.

The princess has now been collected by [[Fujiko Mine|Fujiko]], saying that she knows her identity and offers to take her around Japan with her as Mira's bodyguard. Conan tracks the princess and chases the pair aboard his skateboard, but Fujiko loses him and disappears. Meanwhile, the second objective is the light that led to Lupin Vespania: hidden beneath the kingdom is a mineral that thanks to its "complete stealth powers" may be totally invisible to radar. Using the dowsing rods Lupin has located the mineral.

Count Keith breaks his promise to return Ran after the press conference at the airport and brings her to Vespania. And to allow her daughter to follow, [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] assigns Kogoro as personal assistant to his ICPO friend, [[Inspector Zenigata]], who is going to turn to Vespania to chase Lupin, which allows him to follow his daughter into Vespania. Conan, who had noticed that Count Keith was doing, manages to board the plane while clutching the basket, and is saved from hypothermia by Count Keith, who claims to be doing everything only for the princess.

The princess, Mira has since been reported to be back in Vespania through Fujiko who is spending time with her. Lupin learns how the princess's character transformed into a cynical and selfish one due derivatale anguish, her status as princess and grief due to the death of her mother and brother. It turns out that Fujiko was hired by Count Keith himself precisely to remove a little princess from court life to make her feel, at least for a while, the typical teenage experience. After meeting with Ran and Kogoro, Conan begins to investigate the murder of the queen, with the forced and involuntary help of Jigen. Lupin meanwhile, helped by [[Goemon Ishikawa|Goemon]], has entered the vault of the building, but finds out that crown has been stolen by Fujiko. However, he is forced to give up and flee the building as it has become completely surrounded by police after the alarm sounds.

Mira, after visiting the place where her brother and mother died, decided to assume her duties as the future queen, and agrees to return to the palace.

<spoiler>Princess Mira is just in time for Conan to start his reasoning show, revealing to all, including her the truth about this alleged incident. Conan tries to put Kogoro to sleep with his usual tranquilizer needle, but fails to hit Kogoro (which is actually disguised Lupin), and hits Zenigata instead. Zenigata quickly wakes up after 30 seconds (Conan calls him a monster for doing so). Lupin, revealing his secret identity to Conan, helps resolve the case by pretending to be the true Sleeping Kogoro, and together they reveal the truth: The murderer of the queen and the crown prince is the work of the Vespanian duke, '''Gerard Musca Vespaland'''. Immediately afterwards, Gerard had also killed Gill to make it appear that the prince had killed himself out of remorse of accidentally shooting his mother.

The decisive evidence for Gerard's guilt is the fact that Queen Sakura disapproved of killing innocent lives, and therefore had secretly converted the hunting cartridges into blanks, meaning that neither Gill nor Gerard could have used their rifles to kill even if they wanted to. In addition, the twig shot off the cherry tree indicated that Gill was not the culprit, as he would never hurt anything his mother cherished. Gerard's motive was that he could ascend the throne and get rich by selling the rare ore the queen had forbidden to sell and use, due to her pacifist nature and the potential of the ore to be used in war.

Thanks to Conan, Lupin and Lupin's hoodwinked stealth device, the culprit is apprehended, and Princess Mira becomes the new queen of Vespania. Ran and Kogoro are welcomed as saviors of the kingdom, and Zenigata yearns for yet another fight with Lupin. The final scene shows Conan be taken in a car by members of the Japanese embassy. The people in the car are actually Lupin and his gang, who have decided to help Conan return to Japan due to Conan lacking a passport (since Conan Edogawa was an alias he made up and he illegally entered the country).

Lupin explains that he returned to honor a promise he made to Queen Sakura; he had successfully stolen the royal crown years before, but after seeing that Sakura was infatuated with him, he returned the crown to her to remind her of her responsibility to her country and its people. Additionally, Lupin and his associates demonstrate surprising knowledge about Conan's true identity, calling him [[Shinichi Kudo]], while Conan promises them that if one day they cross paths again, he will definitely arrest them all. Once loaded aboard a submarine provided by yet another of Fujiko's "good friends", Conan finds himself the unwanted object of intense "scrutiny" by Fujiko, who wants to closely examine the effects of the [[APTX 4869]].</spoiler>

Jirokichi sent a message to Kid saying, "The large jewel you yearn for, the Lady Sky, will be displayed on the sky deck of the airship, 'Bell Tree First' on August 14th, during it's test flight. If you wish to grasp this huge treasure in your palms, come between 13:00, the time we depart from Tokyo, and 19:00, our estimated time of arrival in Osaka." Kid replies to Jirokichi's challenge with a letter announcing he will steal Lady Sky when the airship approaches Osaka.

Aboard the airship, besides its employees and the police, there are four others whom are working for the media: Takamichi Fujioka, a journalist; Masaki Mizukawa, a TV director; Kasumi Nishitani, a reporter; and Junpei Ishimoto, a cameraman. Meanwhile, a waitress enters the smoking room where an ampoule with the logo of the Red Siamese Cats is seen under the sofa. Conan reminisces to Professor Agasa about the time Ran thought an airship was a unidentified flying object and asks him to keep it a secret. A waiter overhears Conan in the shadows.

Conan's group is given a tour of the airship; Ran diverges from the group to get a better look at Lady Sky. She meets a waiter wearing a bandage similar to the one she gave to a maintenance personnel and grabs his arm deducing he is Kid in disguise. She then subdues him and threatens to hand him over to [[Ginzo Nakamori]]. Kid removes the mask and pretends to be [[Shinichi Kudo]] and convinces her by telling her she thought the airship was a UFO once. Meanwhile, the waitress begins to develop a rash on the back of her arms. Jirokichi receives a phone call who tells him the bacteria in the smoking room before hanging up. Nakamori confirms through the ampoule that it is the work of the Red Siamese Cats. Fujioka begins to develop a rash over his whole body and approaches the group whilst in pain before being knocked out by Ran. The waitress with the rash is found unconscious by a short-haired waitress; Fujioka and the unconscious waitress are quarantined in a separate room. Conan leaves to search for the Detective Boys who are exploring the ship.

Conan finds them in the attic of the airship. There, they witness an unknown culprit unlock the roof allowing the Red Siamese Cats to enter and hijack the ship. Their leader announces the plan to get revenge on Jirokichi who assisted in eradicating the terrorist group and that they will detonate the bombs on the ships or release a second ampoule containing the bacteria if they resist. Conan finds the four bombs in the attic of the ship and disarms them and notes it was strange that they used bombs and bacteria to hijack the ship and attempts to figure out their ulterior motive. The terrorist group holds Jirokichi at gunpoint and gains possession of Lady Sky. Mizukawa begins to develop the rash on his right palm and is incarcerated in the smoking room. Ran remembers that Fujioka grabbed her arms and is relieved to find no rash has developed. Nishitani laments that the Detective Boys are missing; the Red Siamese Cats overhear this and bring Conan and the Detective Boys to the lobby. Haibara informs Conan through the Detective Badge that the Red Siamese Cats are after him but is slapped by the short-haired waitress whom is revealed to be part of the Red Siamese Cats.

Conan is thrown out the window by their leader and Kid manages to save him. Meanwhile, [[Heizo Hattori]] attempts to deduce the Red Siamese Cats goals, and confirming that if their goal is to get revenge on the Jirokichi, they would crash the airship into the Suzuki company building, the Bell Tree Tower and consequently release the bacteria in the airship to the outside world. Conan informs [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] about the situation. Conan then calls [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] as Shinichi in order to use a police helicopter which he and Kid use to re-board the airship. Conan finds two of the four re-armed bombs in the attic of the airship and grows suspicious as there is no bomb behind the smoking room which would have released the bacteria. Heiji calls Conan telling him the Red Siamese Cats have posted on the internet about the airship causing mass panic to the cities in the airship's path. As the ship approaches Nara, Kid informs Conan that the ship is emitting smoke. Conan realizes the Red Siamese Cat's true motive and sends Heiji to Nara.

Ran begins to develop a rash from where Fujioka touched her and is quarantined in the smoking room. Conan becomes suspicious of the bacteria as it was only supposed to spread by droplet contact and not physical contact. Conan notices the black fingernails from Ran's escort and realizes what the true nature of the infection is.

Conan enters the smoking room where Ran is quarantined and reveals that the Red Siamese Cats never released a bacteria. He explains the smoking room was sprayed with an irritating lacquer which causes a rash when it contacts the skin. Conan then realizes that Fujioka was feigning the symptoms of the bacteria and is the mastermind behind the heist.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police discuss then identities of the Red Siamese Cats. It is revealed they are all foreign mercenaries hired by '''Takamichi Fujioka''' and are only using the terrorist name Red Siamese Cats as a cover up. Conan confronts Fujioka who explains that they targeted the statues since stolen money is easily tracked with modern technology. He then reveals that '''Kasumi Nishitani''' and '''Junpei Ishimoto''' are his comrades and that the two remaining bombs are placed in the lobby where the group is held and will be detonated when he and his comrades escape the airship.

The group in the cabin are tied to the railings by the two culprits who take Lady Sky as their prize. As Fujioka prepares to kill Conan, the airship passes under a bridge and Conan latches his belt to the airship and inflates the soccer ball, jamming it between the bridge and airship causing the airship to tilt vertically. Fujioka falls into the ocean below and the two culprits in the lobby are knocked unconscious.

Kid enters the lobby and unties Ran from the railing and leaves with Lady Sky. As he examines the jewel in the moonlight, Ran, believing Kid to be Shinichi, asks him to turn himself in to the police. Kid tells her he will comply if she kisses him. As the two approach for a kiss, Ran stops and tells him he is not Shinichi. Conan enters the room and angrily runs towards Kid. Kid places Lady Sky on Ran's finger and leaves through the ceiling. Conan asks what Kid did to her, to which she remarks something Shinichi never does and thinks about how he tried to touch her rear.</spoiler>

Shuichi Akai is a British American of Japanese descent, originally from England, and is a member of the American Federal Bureau of Investigation, on special assignment in Japan to capture [[Vermouth]]. Five years prior to the current time-line, [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] agent Shuichi Akai infiltrated the [[Black Organization]] using the alias Dai Moroboshi as a mole and dated [[Akemi Miyano]], one of their low-ranking members, in order to meet [[Shiho Miyano]], a high-ranked member codenamed Sherry, and use her influence to get into the Black Organization.<ref name=599p9>Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 9: "Akai's Past"</ref> Although at first he was simply using Akemi as a tool, they both fell in love with each other. Shuichi distinguished himself as an agent and two years prior to the current time-line received the codename Rye and was called to work under executive agent [[Gin]]. The FBI laid a trap hoping to capture Gin at a warehouse where the meeting was supposed to take place,<ref name=599p9/> but the Black Organization discovered Akai's true allegiance and Gin never appeared.<ref name=599p10>Manga Volume 58, File 2, pg 10: "Akai's Past"</ref>

== Personality ==
Shuichi is a tenacious but stoic agent. Even in personal matters, he remains cool, even detached, from anyone, but his redeeming value is a great sense of loyalty to anyone he knows. He is a skilled and relentless pursuer and detective, qualities which have labeled him the number one enemy of the [[Black Organization]] and earned him the nickname "[[Silver Bullet]]". He looks forward to opportunities to hunt the Black Organization down and get revenge for [[Akemi]]. While usually professional, he often acts independently of the FBI, and even his boss [[James Black]] has trouble getting ahold of him. Shuichi gets along well with Conan, who share many personality traits. Despite that he has American citizenship, he still considers England as his home country.

James Black describes Shuichi as an introverted person who doesn't easily get close to people, and further notes that Shuichi has become even more closed off since Akemi's death.<ref name=502p13>Manga Volume 49, File 2, page 13: "New Order"</ref> Shuichi doesn't often voice what he is thinking and has an unhealthy tendency to prioritize his missions above the emotional well-being of his friends, co-workers, family, and love interests.<ref>Shuichi's fake death, while preserving Kir and allowing her to pass confidential information to the FBI, has caused significant dysfunction within the FBI who believe him to be truly dead. Shuichi prefers to plan secretly, and will readily trick his friends and coworkers, even injuring them, if helps the success of his missions.<ref>FBI vs Org, Shuichi didn't tell the rest of the FBI he would cover Kogoro's agency. In Red vs Black, the return Kir plan and the fake death plan were both kept secret from the FBI. He ordered Camel to remove by force if necessary anyone who interfered which resulted in Jodie being knocked out. Even though he means well, Shuichi is notably clumsy at trying to comfort and connect with others. He is especially dense at recognizing the motives behind the feelings of others and thus how to modify his own behavior to improve relations. As [[Subaru Okiya]], his technique to approach [[Ai Haibara]] leaves her terrified of him, and repeated contact only intensifies her loathing. Ten years ago, he was also cold to young Masumi on their first meeting, brushing Masumi's silly antics aside without realizing that she simply wanted him to smile and treat her kindly, though he most likely was simply in a bad mood, since he just had an intense argument with his mother, in which they traded physical blows, because of his plan to join the FBI after his studies to pursue the case of his father and because he had lied to her about that. Later that day, during the investigation of a case, Shuichi gives both Shinichi and Ran a task to help with the investigation, so Masumi approaches Shuichi shyly and asks for a task as well. Now Shuichi responds kindly and gives her a task that makes her feel important. 

Despite his social awkwardness, Shuichi is not apathetic. He gives Jodie some hope by leaving her a message in his own handwriting, and leaves her a very roundabout hint about his identity after knocking her down even though he cannot reveal the truth to her yet. Eventually he also realized that Masumi was looking up to him, so he began to send her videos of him doing Jeet Kune Do.

== Appearance ==
Shuichi is a tall man of Japanese descent with short wavy hair. His trademark features, by which people close to him have identified him are his eyes which have permanent bags underneath them that make him appear sleep deprived. Other characters often describe him as evil eyed or having a sharp gaze. His eyes are blue in the manga (like every other character) and green in the anime. He and [[Masumi Sera]] presumably more closely resemble their mother then their father.
The second trademark feature is his knit cap, which he is always shown wearing. When he was younger he had a grey fedora which Masumi now wears herself. Up to one year ago, he had very long waist length hair, which he cut after the death of Akemi Miyano "to freshen up." Shuichi is left-handed. Ten years before the present timeline, Shuuichi still had short hair, which means he grew it out sometime during the next five years.<ref>File 973</ref> He is a heavy smoker and his favorite drink is whiskey- he has recently taken to drinking bourbon rather than scotch.

Shuichi is capable of thinking on par with Conan. He once set up a sniper ambush at a nearby building, knowing that the Black Organization will come and try to kill Kogoro. The Moment the Black Organization Reaches Out</ref> In the Paper Airplane Case, Shuichi (disguised as Subaru) matched Conan's deduction abilities, including the use of Morse code and origami. Shuichi Akai and Akemi Miyano were lovers while he was infiltrating the [[Black Organization]]. Shuichi's original mission was to date Akemi Miyano in order to meet Shiho Miyano. Shuichi used Shiho's influence to gain rank in the Organization, intending to become trusted enough to meet with high level agents so the FBI could capture one for questioning. As [[James Black]] later recalls, although Shuichi's relationship with Akemi was merely a stepping stone, Shuichi actually fell in love with Akemi, and considered her his real girlfriend. Because of this he broke up with [[Jodie Starling]].

Sometime later, Akemi develops the suspicion that Shuichi really wasn't who he claimed to be. After Shuichi's expulsion, he confirms that he is an FBI agent to her. To Shuichi's surprise, Akemi doesn't seemed surprised by this, so Shuichi asks her why she never said anything about her suspicions that she was being used by him before, and Akemi hints it is because she loves him. Initially, the Organization couldn't do anything about Akemi because they needed the loyalty of her sister, but two years later they decided that the risk of her contact with Shuichi was too much. They decided to create a situation where they could eliminate her by having her do a bank heist she was supposed to fail. Sometime near the day of the heist, Akemi sent Shuichi a long text message, asking him if he wants to be her real boyfriend when she is finally free from the Organization. After the heist, Akemi is killed by [[Gin]], and it is unknown how Shuichi responded if at all. Shuichi treasures her final text message, and keeps it in his phone many months after Akemi's death. The message also contains a P.S. which has not been revealed yet.

How Akemi and Shuichi met in the manga is unknown, but in the anime, Shuichi Akai originally met Akemi by an intentional accident. She accidentally hit him with her car when he deliberately walked into the street in front of her in order to be hit by her.<ref>Episode 497</ref> Akemi was concerned, and helped take him to the hospital, watching over him until he was better. When he woke up, he felt no anger over what she did, and even asked for her name, to which a very flustered Akemi replied, while he told her his fake name: Dai Moroboshi. After this they began dating.

[[James Black]] is the boss of the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] agents in Japan and therefore the boss of Shuichi. He was one of those who know that Shuichi was alive after Shuichi's fake death, but only because he saw the glue on Shuichi's fingers and would have otherwise also been kept in the dark. The two maintain close contact with each other up to present.

==== Andre Camel ====
[[Andre Camel]] worked with Shuichi Akai before when he was an agent in the [[Black Organization]]. Camel was involved in the plan to capture Gin two years ago, but he gave away the plan of the FBI when he saw a member of the organization disguised as an old man. Because of this, Shuichi's identity became known to the Organization. However, Shuichi does not seem to bear a grudge against Camel but worked together well. Camel is willing to help Akai in any way he can to redeem for his mistake.

When Haibara first met Shuichi, she thought he was a member of the Black Organization. Shuichi seems to know of Haibara's identity. Shuichi and Conan get along well and are capable of thinking on par with one another. In the short time they have worked together, Shuichi has come to respect Conan's intellect and deductive skills and speaks to him professionally. After FBI had capture Kir, he asked who Conan was, hinting that he suspected that there was more to Conan that meets the eyes. He is also aware that [[Conan]] and [[Shinichi Kudo]] are really one and the same person <ref>Manga [[Volume 77]], File 813 p.16 and File 814 p.3 </ref>. There is further speculation amongst fans that Shuichi has figured out that Ai was formerly Sherry and (more than likely) learned about her research for the Black Organization and the two possible effects of [[APTX 4869]].

[[Masumi Sera]] is Shuichi's younger sister. Masumi wasn't born yet when Shuichi went to America to study, so they first got to meet each other, when Masumi was seven. It's indicated at Shuichi cares for his sister. During the mystery train case, when Masumi was knocked out by Vermouth and hidden in her room, Shuichi (disguised as Subaru) carried her back to her own room. As he was about to leave he overheard her calling out 'Shuu-nii' in her sleep, which made him smile. And in the movie [[Dimensional Sniper]] he (as Subaru) was seen leaving the hospital, where Masumi was hospitalized after getting shot, hinting that he was visiting her. While she was unconscious, he left a bouquet in her room, which Ran and Sonoko find.

Shuichi Akai and [[Rei Furuya|Bourbon]] are stated to be enemies. It's been stated that Bourbon hated Shuichi more than Gin did. Bourbon believed himself to be the only one capable of killing Shuichi, and refused to believe that Shuichi was dead. Shuichi feels neutral toward Bourbon, saying that he is not someone that he wants as an enemy. He even considers him one of 'the two best detectives' (the second one being Conan).

Bourbon's hate of Shuichi is explained in the manga: Between four years ago and two years ago, Shuichi was found by Bourbon, standing over Scotch's dead body holding a smoking gun. Ever since then Rei has blamed Shuichi and has sought out to kill him. In reality, Shuichi tried to stop Scotch from commiting suicide, but Scotch pulled the trigger on himself because he thought that his undercover operations were found out. To protect Scotch's secrets, Shuichi made it look as if he had killed him.

Akai's name comes from the [[wikipedia:Mobile Suit Gundam|Mobile Suit Gundam]] character [[wikipedia:Char Aznable|Char Aznable]], whose nickname was the {{nihongo|"Red Comet"|'''赤い'''彗星|'''Akai''' Suisei}}, and Char's voice actor [[Shuichi Ikeda|'''Shuichi''' Ikeda]] (who is also Akai's voice actor). Additionally, his alias, Dai Moroboshi, comes from Char's real name, Casval Rem '''Deikun''' (sounds like '''Dai-kun''' in Japanese). '''Moroboshi''' can also mean ''falling star'', another possible allusion to ''Red Comet''.<ref>In Moroboshi (諸星), the first kanji can be broken up into 言者 which when pronounced as げんしゃ (gensha) sounds very similar to the word for "phenomenon" (genshou).
