Conan is often treated as a separate character from Shinichi by fans, and often viewed as the main character of the series while Shinichi is viewed as a recurring character. He has become a popular figure in Japan and even appeared at numerous occasions in different anime series (i.e. mainly cameo appearances) as well as other medias.

At the beginning of the series, Shinichi brings his friend [[Ran Mouri]] to [[Setting#Tropical_Land|Tropical Land]], a local theme park, to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there.<ref name="e1" /> As they are leaving, Shinichi witnesses a suspicious exchange between an unknown business man and [[Vodka|a man in black]] in a secluded area by the ferris wheel. While spying on the suspicious men, Shinichi does not notice [[Gin|another man in black]], who knocks him out from behind and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as [[APTX 4869]]. They then leave him to die. However, instead of killing Shinichi, a rare side-effect occurred. Shinichi comes up with the alias Conan Edogawa using the mystery author names [[Arthur Conan Doyle|Arthur '''''Conan''''' Doyle]] and [[Edogawa Rampo|'''''Edogawa''''' Rampo]] and pretends to be a distant relative of Agasa's who then places Conan in Ran's care.<ref name="e2" /> Ran's father, [[Kogoro Mouri]], owns a Detective Agency which may provide a chance for Conan to run into a case involving the Black Organization. However, Kogoro is a terrible detective with little credibility. Using helpful gadgets that Agasa makes, Conan sets out to improve Kogoro's detective reputation by solving cases for him while also hiding the truth that Conan is really the one solving cases. By knocking Kogoro out at crime scenes with a fast-acting [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch|tranquilizer]] and using a [[Voice-Changing Bowtie|voice modulator]] to relay deductions in Kogoro's voice, Conan creates 'Sleeping Kogoro'. As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Professor Agasa made for him. He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Professor Agasa. In some situations, when there's only Ran, Sonoko, and himself, he will use Sonoko instead to solve the case at hand. Because of that, Sonoko eventually becomes another moderately well-known "sleeping" detective, although her reputation is only known to the local police investigation team and Sonoko's friends. In much later files, Conan has solved the case as himself then claimed afterwards that Shinichi told him what to say.

== Personality ==
As Conan, Shinichi tries to behave like a child. He refers to Ran as "Ran-neechan" (''nee-chan'' meaning older sister, a common nickname Japanese children give to teenagers and young adults they look up to), and refers to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan" (''nii-chan'' meaning older brother). He also refers to Kogoro as "Oji-san" or "Occhan" (both meaning Uncle), although he also does this as Shinichi. As Shinichi, he refers to Conan as usually "Conan-kun" or the "Kid in the Glasses". Shinichi treats Conan as a separate person completely, thinking for example, "changing back into Conan".

Conan remains very close to Ran, who in return is very protective of him. However, because Ran is unaware of his true identity, Conan often finds himself in awkward situations with her, such as when she confessed her feeling for Shinichi to him and when she made him bathe with her at a hot spring.

Conan's intelligence remains intact even though he has shrunken into a child. As Shinichi, his deductive ability earned him the monikers "[[Wikipedia:Heisei|Heisei]] Holmes" and "Savior of the Japanese police force". Conan maintains an extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases and escape tricky situations. Conan tries to speak in a child-like manner when dealing with adults, but he often gets caught up in the current case and begins speaking like an adult, referring to advanced topics and using reasoning much too complex for a normal child. When this happens, he often tries to pass it off as "something [he] heard on TV" or "taught by uncle Kogoro/professor Agasa/Shinichi-niichan". Although as the series has progressed the adults around him have become more used to his "being quite smart for a child", causing him to behave more like himself around them, he still tries to pass as a normal child. The only police officers with whom Conan can speak in a professional manner are the [[FBI]], especially [[Jodie Starling]], [[Shuichi Akai]], [[James Black]], and Inspector [[Kansuke Yamato]] of the Nagano Police, all of whom suspect that there is more to Conan than meets the eye.

Conan tends to act more like himself around the [[Detective Boys]], even to the point that they find it odd when he acts like a child around adults. He will often play games like baseball with the Detective Boys, but he is too used to soccer to perform well and will even instinctively use soccer techniques, such as kicking in games that do not call for it. Because he is unfamiliar with popular games and TV shows, and bad at video games, Genta and the others tend to think of him as dumb. This annoys Conan so much that he will secretly watch TV in the living room after Kogoro and Ran go to sleep to get more "practice" in.

Conan has dark brown hair which mostly hangs downwards just above his blue eyes, but there are also a few strands that stick up at the front and back of his head. Conan's usual outfit consists of a blue suit jacket with a single button and a pair of shorts, red trainers and white socks, even though he has taken to wearing more casual clothing as time goes on. He also wears a red bowtie and his dad's old glasses. Both these items were later [[Gadgets|specifically modified]] by Professor Agasa to include a [[Voice-Changing Bowtie|voice changer]], [[Button Speaker|microphone]], and [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|homing device]], to aid in Conan in his cases. His [[Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes|red shoes]] have also been modified to harness electric and magnetic fields to stimulate pressure points on Conan's foot, greatly enhancing his kicking power.

All of Shinichi's detective skills carry over to his Conan form, although Conan does not the have the reputation Shinichi had. He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to remember every detail of an investigation or other topics he cares about, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Conan's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony that other people miss, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading in his "first childhood". There are only few people like [[Heiji]], [[Kaito]] and [[Hakuba]] who are as intelligent as Conan.

As a child, Conan can attract less suspicion while investigating crime scenes, get away with searching people's personal property, and ask innocent questions without setting suspects on guard, although it comes with the drawback of not having Shinichi's authority or reputation. Conan is just as skilled as Shinichi in soccer, but a lot less powerful because he only has the strength of a young child. To make up for this, Conan uses Agasa's Power-enhancing kick shoes. Conan uses signature, powerful precision kick to knock out criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Like Shinichi, Conan's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing, snowboarding, and ice-skating.

Conan also has some skill with firearms despite the recoil being much more severe for a child's body. He shoots out a bus window during a bus hijacking, and precisely grazes Ran's leg to render her useless as a hostage in the second movie.

Conan's nimbleness is especially noticeable in the non-[[canon]] movies. For example, in the sixth movie, Conan is seen to fight with various antagonists, and he even holds his own against Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer who bests even Ran in combat. In the fourteenth movie, Conan does a back flip on his skateboard in order to avoid being killed by the blimp's hijackers. Conan shows a proclivity for skateboarding. In the movies and anime, Conan can easily perform very complicated tricks and dodges with his skateboard at high speed.

Conan cannot sing on key in the slightest so he is often accused of being [[Wikipedia:tone deaf|tone deaf]]. Despite being a hilariously awful singer, Conan has [[Wikipedia:perfect pitch|perfect pitch]] and can identify notes accurately even in difficult contexts like the sound of phone button presses forming a melody. In Episode 11: The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case, he knows that the piano is in tune and deciphers a message at the end just by listening to the notes that are played. Haibara directly described Shinichi Kudo as having perfect pitch in the last scenes of the twelfth Detective Conan movie, [[Full Score of Fear]]. He also manages to replicate and sing dial tones for a phone, showing that the reason he can't sing is because he simply doesn't have ''relative'' pitch. In File 728 (Episode 614), Conan stated he isn't very knowledgeable about music but identified the untuned piano key whereupon Haibara joked about his sharp ears despite being tone-deaf.

Also, to be like his favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes, he plays the violin. This was confirmed in movie 12 of the 'Full Score of Fear' when he played "Amazing Grace" for Ran. However, he is stumped on what Ran meant when she said, "He has a funny habit when he plays."

== Plot overview ==

=== Initial pursuit ===
After Shinichi becomes Conan, he sets out to find the men in black almost immediately. At the suggestion of Agasa, he moves in with Ran and Kogoro, hoping that cases related to them come by. Pretty soon, a case involving a woman name [[Akemi Miyano]] (using the alias Masami Hirota) appears. Akemi robs a bank for the men in black in the hopes that they will free her sister from their organization. Conan is unable to realize the case's connection to the organization until after the men in black have shot Akemi and left her for dead rather than give up such a valuable asset as her sister. In her dying moments, Akemi warns Conan of the danger of the organization.<ref>[[Volume 2#File 013 - The Missing Man|Volume 2, Files 13-16: "The Missing Man"]]</ref>

Conan runs across the men in black again on a bullet train, this time learning their codenames: [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]].

At a game convention, Conan meets a third man in black named [[Tequila]], only to have him die in an explosion meant for someone else. Conan learns about a meeting place from the murderer, but just before he reaches the bar an explosion set by the men in black destroys the place entirely, leaving Conan without any leads.

=== Introduction of Ai Haibara===

Later on, Conan meets child-size biochemist [[Ai Haibara]], the creator of [[APTX 4869]]. Ai grew up within the Black Organization as [[Shiho Miyano]] and is a former member of it along with her deceased sister, Akemi.<ref name="f178">[[Volume_18#File 178 - Code Name Sherry|Volume 18, File 178: "Code Name Sherry"]]</ref> After Akemi died, Shiho refused to keep working and took APTX 4869 to die before the Black Organization could execute her. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help. Agasa's willingness to help whenever possible makes Shinichi's life as Conan more convenient. He was the one who created most of Conan's gadgets, including his power shoes and tracking glasses. He willingly plays Conan's case solving mouthpiece when Conan lacks someone else convenient to use. When Conan needs something, such as information regarding past cases, he usually asks Agasa to get it. Agasa often acts as a chauffeur because he is trustworthy and the only adult with a car regularly available.

Agasa often worries about Shinichi, especially when he thinks Shinichi might be getting over his head. Agasa almost always responds positively to Shinichi's requests, but doesn't like it when Shinichi hides the reasons for it, especially if it is dangerous.

When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals, especially after Kudo beats Heiji in their first case. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act like an older brother towards him, much to the annoyance of Conan. Since then, the two have become closest friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They tend to stick together on cases, although sometimes this is because Heiji forces the less enthusiastic Conan to come along. While fond of Heiji as a fellow detective he can relate to, Conan finds Heiji's antics occasionally annoying. Much to Conan's chagrin, Heiji even convinces others that Conan is his disciple. Conan especially dislikes Heiji's dangerous habit of unthinkingly calling Conan 'Kudo' when others are present.

Heiji still maintains some of his original feelings of rivalry, and gets annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better , and will often go to great lengths to show that the "west" (Osaka) is better than the "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

While Conan initially was disgusted by Ai's ties to the Black Organization, especially with how she introduced herself, seeing her remorse and pain has improved his opinion of her. He is repeatedly protective of her and tries to give her hope when her fear of the men in black is overwhelming.

However, they both become quite jealous of Conan whenever Ayumi shows gestures of affection towards him (usually a small kiss on the cheek). While Conan initially only tolerated their presence, he has grown fond of them despite their relative immaturity.

Even though [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] do not yet know who's interfering with their operations, Gin has been shown to be curious who "that guy" is, referring to Conan. In the movie [[The Raven Chaser]], Gin tries to catch a glimpse of Conan's face from a helicopter, but fails when Conan successfully downs the helicopter. Conan seems to have a very bitter hatred towards them, and this only increases as more people are targeted by the Black Organization.

====Vermouth====
[[Vermouth]] seems to have great personal interest in Conan, referring to him as the Black Organization's 'Silver Bullet'. She also protects Conan, probably because when she was disguising as a serial killer in New York she was saved by Conan (Shinichi at the time) and Ran. When the Organization plans on killing Kogoro, and later Conan, she strongly objects to a degree where Gin suspects whether Kogoro is related to Vermouth. Because of this, Conan does not react strongly when she is mentioned, as opposed to Haibara. He also seems to consider her less of a threat than the other members because he is able to bargain with her about Haibara and knows Vermouth is keeping his secret for personal reasons.

====Bourbon====
[[Tooru Amuro]] (codenamed Bourbon) has attached himself to the Mouri Detective Agency as Kogoro's "apprentice". Conan initially treats him in a somewhat friendly manner, though he privately thinks "another annoying person's showed up" when he learns Amuro will be joining Kogoro on cases. After learning of Amuro's membership in the Black Organization, though, Conan has been relatively nervous about him being near Ran. He's become more cautious and is somewhat confused by Amuro's helpful behavior, though he attempts to pretend nothing has changed. Before being shrunk, Shinichi encountered [[Kaitou Kid]] once during the Clock Tower heist, though they did not meet face-to-face. In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi has become Conan, Kid disguises himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki family's Black Star pearl. When Conan corners him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid implies that he stole all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ends up being a bluff, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid in subsequent encounters. Conan stops Kid from escaping with the jewel often enough that Conan has gained reputation with the press as Kid's "natural enemy". In several instances Conan appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence, and seems excited by the chance to catch Kid again; appropriately, Kid seems to find Conan dangerous enough to warrant specific measures to keep him distracted.

Conan does not buy in to Kid's reputation as a mysterious, uncatchable phantom, saying once "He's only a thief that uses magic",<ref>Anime Episode 515: Kaitou Kid's Teleportation Magic</ref> and encouraging police officers that Kid is only a man and he can be arrested. However, if necessary, the two can put their rivalry aside for a little while and work together.<ref>[[Kaitou Kid and the Four Masterpieces]]</ref> Conan has something of a gentleman's agreement with Kaitou Kid, in that he doesn't try to find or catch the thief outside of heists. In several instances, when Kid does Conan a favor, such as saving Genta's life<ref>[[Big Adventure in the Eccentric Mansion]]</ref>, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape mostly unhindered. This exchange of favors can sometimes become a bit unbalanced; in exchange for not giving Kid away on a train Conan has Kid face down the [[Black Organization]] in disguise, and because Kid narrowly escapes an explosion with his life, he says that Conan now owes ''him'' one.<ref>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 7 (824): "Mystery Train (Final Destination)"</ref>

In the non-[[canon]] movies, it is implied that Kid knows Conan's identity; he even helps Conan maintain his cover by disguising himself as Shinichi so that a suspicious Ran would stop suspecting Conan. However, this has not been confirmed by Gosho Aoyama, nor has it been implied in the manga.

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], [[Yusaku Kudo]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], [[Heiji Hattori]], and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] of the Black Organization also knows about Conan's secret. Later, in Episode 508 of the anime, [[Eisuke Hondou]] confirms Conan's identity as [[Shinichi Kudo]] straight from him. In manga chapter 812-814, [[Subaru Okiya]] ([[Shuichi Akai]] in disguise) confirms that Conan is Shinichi. [[Masumi Sera]] may also be suspicious that Conan is Shinichi Kudo.

The 3rd, 8th, and 14th movies also demonstrate that Kaitou Kid apparently knows Conan's identity and acts to protect it. However, this has yet to be backed up by the original artist, Gosho Aoyama, in the manga or (as would follow) the anime main series.

Gosho Aoyama (and Shinichi, in the story) got the name 'Conan Edogawa' from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories, and Edogawa Rampo, the pen name of Japanese mystery fiction writer Hirai Tarō. Hirai Tarō himself got the pen name "Edogawa Rampo" from a transliteration of "Edgar Allan Poe." Pronouncing Poe's name in a Japanese accent sounds like 'Edogawa Rampo.'

Gosho said Conan's hairstyle was designed in about one minute. He smoothed [[Yaiba]]'s hair and added a tuft modeled after the apostrophe hairstyle of Kabu from [[Wikipedia:Sally_the_Witch|Sally the Witch]]. The tuft on hair on the top of Conan's head comes from the character Shichimi in [[Wikipedia:Niji Iro Tōgarashi|Niji Iro Tōgarashi]]. Kogoro is a private investigator,<ref>[[Volume 1#File 001 - The Heisei Holmes|Volume 1, File 1: "The Heisei Holmes"]]</ref> but he prefers to laze around his office all day unless his client is a beautiful woman. Kogoro attended Teitan High School, the same high school as [[Ran Mouri]] and [[Shinichi Kudo]], along with [[Eri Kisaki]], [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko Fujimine]], and the actress Ruri Ujo.<ref>[[Volume 37]]</ref> He then graduated from Beika University, where he was the ace of the Judo team, though he was highly vulnerable to stage fright.<ref>[[Volume 9#File 086 - The Two Benkei Standing Deaths|Volume 9, File 86: "The Two Benkei Standing Deaths"]]</ref>

Some time after graduating, Kogoro became a police officer. He worked in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One with [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]], but while an excellent marksman he was not a particularly good investigator. He also worked for some time under [[Inspector Yuminaga]] in the arson division as well. While Movie 2 strongly suggests that Kogoro left the police force because of the incident where he gave his wife, [[Eri Kisaki]], a bullet graze on the leg to save her from a hostage situation, his reasons for leaving the force have not been confirmed in the manga. <ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref> Around the time Kogoro left the police force, Eri also moved out, though they have never officially divorced despite ten years having passed.<ref name="m2" /> Their daughter, [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], keeps trying to get them back together, but she has yet to succeed. During a case Kogoro took soon after, he reached the wrong conclusion, and Conan knocked him out with an ashtray before he could accuse an innocent person. Kogoro has an overinflated sense of his own importance and detective prowess to the point where he doesn't investigate why he is suddenly and consistently passing out at crime scenes and solving cases in his sleep with different deductions than he was making while awake. Kogoro is also frequently unprofessional in his work, frequently making sarcastic and blunt comments about suspects or even his own clients. On cases, Kogoro is typically lax with his deductions and investigation, following only the most obvious clues or assumptions to reach his conclusions, which are often silly or fall directly into a culprit's trap. The police, especially Megure, often find him to be an embarrassment while awake and hope to see "Sleeping Kogoro" as soon as possible. Kogoro does have a serious side which only emerges when the case has personal importance to him, such as when Eri and Ran are involved. When this happens, Kogoro's entire personality and demeanor changes and he begins acting professionally, demonstrating improved deductive skills and cunning. Kogoro easily becomes infatuated with beautiful women. This is Kogoro Mouri’s first depicted case in the series,<ref>Even though this is the first case of Kogoro in [[Detective Conan]], it is not his first case ever, since he has been a private detective since before the current timeline started.</ref> after [[Roller Coaster Murder Case|the event]] where [[Shinichi]] was turned into a child by the [[Black Organization]]. He is requested by phone to find Akiko Tani, who is suspected to have been kidnapped by “a large man dressed in black”. Kogoro then immediately calls a taxi to go to the Tani mansion in Yayoi, without knowing that [[Ran|his daughter]] and [[Conan|a strange kid]] has already jumped in with him. He expresses his excitement about the case, calling himself “Great Detective”, but only to be sarcastically addressed as “Confused Detective” by the two instead.<ref>[[Volume 1|Volume 1, File 2, Page 28]]; the two characters 名 (renowned) and 迷 (confused) have the same pronunciation (mei) and can be used as a pun.</ref> Kogoro becomes furious and questions Ran about the identity of the strange kid, then intends to get rid of them from the car. When the three arrive at the Tani household, Kogoro questions some of the household members about the details of the kidnapping. However, Conan’s continuous interference gets on his nerves, even to the point that he wants to “kill” the boy after solving the case.<ref>[[Volume 1|Volume 1, File 3, Page 10]]. However, it was most likely just an exaggerated type of expression rather than his true desire of killing Conan.</ref> Later, with help from Conan’s hints, Kogoro is able to come to the conclusion that the house butler is behind the kidnapping. However, Akiko Tani has already been abducted in truth by someone else. After the case is over, it is revealed that the first kidnapping was just a set-up by the girl with the help from the butler, while the second one was by mere chance. Kogoro then laughs in satisfaction and takes all the credits for himself while Conan is actually the one to release the dog and locate Akiko. This case marks the very first appearance of '''“Sleeping Kogoro”'''. [[Conan]] wakes up in the morning and finds a slothful Kogoro drinking beer and watching television shows, including the musical performance of his idol star, [[Yoko Okino]]. [[Agasa]] advises Conan to build Kogoro into a great detective, in order to find cases related to the [[Black Organization]], but Conan doubts if that is even possible given Kogoro's laziness.

Busying enjoying one of [[Yoko Okino]]’s shows, Kogoro tells a new client to come back the next day. However, after discovering that his client is none other than Yoko herself, he rushes to his room and cleans up into an impeccable suit. Yoko explains she is being stalked, and agreed to investigate her apartment secretly (after asking for her personal information and an autograph). However, to everyone's shock, when they arrive at the apartment there is a dead body inside. Kogoro orders them to call the Police and is furious when Yoko’s manager, Eiichi Yamagishi, tries to dissuade him in order to protect Yoko from the media. When Inspector [[Megure]] arrives, he gets depressed about his old subordinate’s appearance, thinking of him as the one who always makes situation turns into a “nightmare”.<ref>[[Volume 1|Volume 1, File 7, Page 5]]</ref>

Conan's investigations once again annoy Kogoro while Kogoro tries to defend Yoko despite the apparent evidence that she committed the murder. He repeatedly accuses Eiichi of being the murderer, as he has a copied key, though there's no proof of either person's guilt or innocence. He switches suspicions to fellow idol Yuko Ikezawa after Yuko's earring is discovered in the apartment. When Yuko is trapped into admitting she was the the "stalker" but still denies being the murderer, he switches back to accusing Eiichi. Realizing Kogoro’s mistake, Conan kicks an ash-tray at his head, knocking him unconscious. He uses the [[Voice-Changing Bowtie]] that [[Agasa]] has given to him earlier to imitate Kogoro’s voice, and points out that the case is in fact a suicide. Kogoro wakes up after the case is solved when the cigarette in his hand starts to burn his fingers. From then on, Conan has used Kogoro as a puppet mouthpiece for solving cases, with the secondary purpose of turning the man into a famous detective.

Kogoro Mouri becomes suspicious about [[Conan]]'s identity for the first time in this case. When talking to the boy, Kogoro suddenly feels like he has seen Conan from somewhere before. He thinks that it might have been around the time when Ran was still in elementary school.<ref>[[Volume 2|Volume 2, File 010]]</ref> Later, when Kogoro is investigating the death of a man whom he has been hired to observe for three days, Conan provides a hint by pointing out that every picture of the suspect taken during the supposed time of the murder has clocks in them, which helps Kogoro figure out that they must have intentionally been taken that way in order to make people clearly see the "alibi". Kogoro immediately finds it strange that whenever it seems like he has been stuck, Conan always gives him some kind of clue, just like in the previous cases. He, for the first time, notices that Conan is not an ordinary child and begins to wonder who the boy is. However, after Conan purposefully messes up with other photos, Kogoro completely loses his suspicions, thinking: "A brat is a brat after all..."<ref>[[Volume 2|Volume 2, File 12]]</ref>

This case marks Kogoro Mouri's first fame as a private detective.

[[Ran]] forces Kogoro and Conan to go to a medieval-themed art museum exhibit, because she heard a rumor about a knight armor that moves by itself at night. The three of them browse the museum, though Kogoro and Conan lack enthusiasm. However, when they walk into a gallery called the "Room of Hell", Ran discovers the corpse of the museum's new owner, Manaka, been brutally slashed and impaled on a sword. After the police arrive, Kogoro watches the security camera recording of the murder with them, showing that the culprit had been waiting for Manaka inside the exhibition room inside a knight's suit of armor. The armor both hid the murderer's identity and mirrored a painting in the gallery called "Divine Punishment" that depicts a knight having gruesomely killed a monster. Kogoro recalls the fact that the entrance to the "Room of Hell" was blocked during the time of the murder, indicating that the culprit must have been among the museum staff, as they know the museum and could access the equipment. With Conan's help, the police discover a dying message inside Manaka's hand. The crumpled note has the name "Kubota" written on it.

With this piece of evidence and some further discoveries, Kogoro and the police accuse Kubota of being the culprit. However, Conan is suspicious of the simplicity and of Manaka's behavior on the video while writing the note. Conan realizes that Kubota was framed by someone with a great love of art who could order Kubota into doing a job alone: the museum curator, Ochiai. Ochiai prepared the note beforehand and gave Manaka a pen without ink. Conan tricks Ochiai into revealing that he switched the pen found with Manaka with the one in his pocket, and Ochiai confesses to the crime. At the end of the case, Kogoro is shown reading a newspaper article that features him. He is proud of himself for "solving" the murder case, and is happy that he has become an "instant celebrity".

Kogoro brings [[Ran]] and [[Conan]] together to Togichi, to the reunion vacation with his old classmates from Beika University's Judo Club. These friends of his are [[Jun Omura]], model shop manager; Yukio Ayashiro, high school P.E. teacher; Yumi Horikoshi, businessman; Noriko Ayashiro, Yukio's wife and homemaker; and Kazushi Nakamichi, a police officer from Chiba Prefecture. During their conversation, they reveal that Kogoro used to skip practices and often lost in tournaments, while he has told Ran that he was "invincible".<ref>[[Volume 9|Volume 9, File 84, Page 3]]</ref> Later, Kazushi suggests everyone play ping-pong before they go watch the fireworks at 6:30 PM. All of them agree to participate in the activity, except for Yumi Horikoshi, Kazushi's ex-girlfriend from their university days. While Kogoro plays against Yukio, Ran compliments Kazushi as being the strongest on their Judo team. However, Kazushi disclaims that title by specifying that there is a person even more powerful than himself whom he can never beat. Much later in the evening, when everyone gets back to the inn from the fireworks location (even though most of them got lost, they find out that Yumi is still sleeping, and decide to wake her up. Much to their surprise, the moment they walk into Yumi's room, she has already been shot. Kogoro, together with Kazushi, take the role in investigating her death before the polive arrive. Using professional techniques, they conclude that Yumi has been dead since 7 hours ago, when they all went to the ping-pong room. Just as usual, Kogoro becomes furious at Conan's interference, despite the boy's hints, and claims that she has committed suicide. However, right after Conan intentionally asks him how Yumi was shot, he rushes to her body and finds out that there are no burn mark around the wound, which wouldn't make sense if it was a suicide. Kogoro then comes to the conclusion that his friend was actually murdered.

Suspecting that Jun Omura is hiding something, Kogoro interrogates him and learns that he saw Yumi after 5 PM, when she was supposed to have died. Even though on the outside, Kogoro keeps saying that the killer was some intruder, deep inside he knows for sure that the culprit must have been among his best friends, since outsiders wouldn't bother faking the crime scene. When being questioned by Conan, Kogoro angrily punches at a house-stake, yelling that he will not forgive the culprit, and determines to "expose them with no question, no matter what".<ref>[[Volume 9|Volume 9, File 85]]. In the anime version, he punched the wall.</ref>

Seeing Kogoro's determination, despite having found out the truth behind the murder, Conan decides not to use the [[Stun-Gun Wristwatch]] this time, and chooses to give Kogoro clues so he can solve the case by himself. With Conan's helps, Kogoro is able to figure out that the culprit is Kazushi Nakamichi. Yumi was actually killed after playing ping-pong with Kazushi after 6 PM, that way, her muscle would harden much faster than usual. Another evidence was when Kazushi knew for sure that she had been dead the moment they discovered her corpse. When Kazushi confesses and says that she was a demon who was destroying his life, Kogoro sarcastically asks him who the real demon is. Kazushi angrily grabs his yukata, only to be thrown by Kogoro, who thinks that he doesn't want to understand the feeling of a killer.<ref>[[Volume 9|Volume 9, File 86, Page 16]]</ref> It is then revealed that Kogoro is the "strongest person" whom Kazushi was talking about earlier. He compliments Kogoro, saying he is still as strong as ever. Just as usual, he decides to tranquilize Kogoro and use the man to solve the case. When Kogoro wakes up, he begins to question Conan about Yoko's whereabouts. He is also suspicious about the fact that whenever Conan tries to pull him outside, he always falls asleep right after. Kogoro angrily grabs the boy's suit jacket and wants to "clear things up". Luckily for Conan, Yoko Okino appears for real and Kogoro completely loses his suspicions.

Kogoro, [[Ran]] and [[Conan]] vacation at a beach in Izu. When Ran asks her father to look at her new swimsuit, he tells her to keep quiet because it will be harder for him to flirt with women once they know that he's together with her. Suddenly, Kogoro notices a beautiful woman in a swimsuit standing right next to them and excitedly asks if she needs any sun cream. To his surprise, when the woman turns around, he finds out that it is none other than [[Eri Kisaki|his wife]]. Kogoro and Eri soon realize that the coincidental encounter was actually set up by Ran in an attempt to get them back together. They react poorly to being manipulated and mock each other until Kogoro leaves to use the toilet. Ran starts to worry after Kogoro is gone for some time, but Eri predicts that Kogoro stopped to flirt with other women. When Kogoro comes back, he is indeed shown with two young girls, Kiwako Toda and Harumi Matsuzaki. The situation worsens when Eri notices traces of sand on Kogoro's legs, and assumes he must have been kneeling while applying sun scream to those girls at the beach, then brought them back to show off to her. However, Conan suspects that Kogoro actually went searching for Eri's lost wedding ring until Kogoro’s goofiness makes Conan dismiss the idea.

Later, with the invitation from the university students, the Mouri family have lunch together at a seaside restaurant. When Ran once again attempts to alleviate the tense relationship between Kogoro and Eri by commenting that Kiwako Toda and her boyfriend Masahiko Matsuzaki are childhood friends like they were, Kogoro sarcastically tells them that many couples have suffered in marriage for loving a friend they’ve known since childhood. He and Eri even give the young couple their business cards and recommend the two to seek them in case “he suspects that his wife is cheating” or because “they plan to divorce and she wants to get a lot of alimony from her husband”.

After Kiwako Toda goes diving with Ran and gets bitten by a sea snake, Ran is asked to identify it. Kogoro compliments his daughter for having good sense of observation, but Eri takes advantage of the topic and comments that she is completely different from “a certain someone who still hasn’t even noticed that his wife’s finger is empty”. However, Kogoro acts as if he doesn’t understand Eri’s hint. Later, as Kogoro is about to drive Kiwako’s friends to the hospital, Eri decides to drop Ran and Conan off there and then goes home right away. However, Kogoro informs her with a serious expression that he has something to tell her after the case is resolved. At the hospital, when Eri is about to leave after seeing Kogoro to some girls, Conan asks a nurse to call Eri and Harumi Matsuzaki and tells them to go to an office to see Kogoro. He then immediately lures Kogoro into becoming "Sleeping Kogoro" and reveals that the culprit is none other than Harumi. Conan also adds that Eri didn't purposely remove the wedding ring in order to attract Kogoro’s attention. After the case is solved, it is revealed that Kogoro did indeed go search for the wedding ring, which explains the sand traces on his legs, as he knelt on the sand to do so. Kogoro takes the ring out of his pocket and throws it to Eri. He says that he figured it out because Eri was drying her hair with her glasses on; normally no one would do that unless they’re trying to find something on the ground. He also assumes that Eri intentionally dropped her ring and tried to make him see that by using her left hand to hold the cup and continuously waving it around. Just as their relationship looks to be improved by this act, Kogoro completely ruins the moment by showing off with the female nurses, which enrages Eri and she leaves right after.

Kogoro encounters his wife Eri once again at a vacation spot, where he eventually becomes the prime suspect in the murder of her colleague and rival, Ritsuko Usui.

The events take place when Kogoro, along with Ran and Conan, unexpectedly finds Eri shopping with a fellow lawyer, Norifumi Saku. He suspects that his wife is going out with Saku, not knowing that she's actually trying to pick a present for himself as the next day will be their wedding anniversary. They agree to have a drink together with Eri's other acquainted lawyers, but the detective's old bad habits while drunk once again enrages her.

Later, Kogoro accompanies the lawyers back to the hotel, where he, while unconscious, is instead brought to Usui's room as one of her tactics to ruin Eri's career by having "the queen" suspect that her husband has been cheating on her. An unexpected turn of events occurs when Usui is strangled by an unknown culprit with Kogoro being the only one found sleeping inside the locked crime scene. He is then suspected to have committed the murder.

Much to everyone's surprise, Eri refuses to defend her husband in court, while openly declaring her accusation of Kogoro. However, her real intention is to remain at the crime scene in order to find a way to prove his innocence, but Kogoro misunderstands this and angrily walks away after replying with some sarcastic comments.

Eri, with Conan's help, eventually manages to unmask the true murderer and clear Kogoro's name. The next day morning, after learning of his wife's deeds, Kogoro walks to where Eri is sitting and apologizes to her. He also sincerely asks her to come back with him, only to find out that she's just listening to Ran's MD without actually hearing anything that he said. Kogoro gets angry at Eri again as she leaves, not knowing that she has recorded all of his nice words into the disk.

Kogoro buys an expensive necklace as a birthday present to Eri Kisaki without telling Ran or Conan beforehand. Ran and Conan find out about this when they discover the receipt in Kogoro's wallet. Later on, Ran manages to win them a family trip to Shizuoka with Kogoro's lottery ticket and invites Eri to a birthday dinner with Kogoro, Ran and Conan.

The dinner doesn't go as well as planned. Kogoro behaves in his usual casual manner, acting indifferent to Eri's presence and seemingly having no intention of giving Eri the necklace. Later that night, a murder occurs in Eri's hotel room. Kogoro immediately devotes himself to solving the case and after receiving hints from Conan, and with both Conan and Eri's help with his deduction, uncovers the murderer's identity.

After the case is closed, Kogoro steps up to give Eri the present. It turns out that Kogoro had remembered Eri's birthday as Sports Day (taiiku no hi) and the recent date change of Sports Day had made his birthday present one day late. While he was flustered and frustrated by his mistake, Eri decides that she still wants it because she could tell that Kogoro deeply cares for her. However, she opens the package and finds out that Kogoro had, due to his carelessness, given her a Buddhist rosary (nenju) that he had bought for the owner of Poirot, while Eri's birthday present was lying in his desk drawer all along.

====Eri Kisaki====
Eri Kisaki is Kogoro's wife, who has been living separately from him for the last ten years. A primary reason that they have not yet gotten back together is because of Mouri's constant flirting with other women. It is shown that Eri still cares for him, even naming her cat 'Goro', which is taken from Kogoro. She is also annoyed by his frequent alcoholic indulgences. Despite constantly feigning disinterest in her, Kogoro still appears to have feelings for Eri. He even asked her to move back in with him at one point, but at the time she pretended not to hear him because she was not "ready" yet, though she still has feelings for him as well.

====Ran Mouri====
Kogoro has raised his daughter Ran ever since he and Eri separated. She often has to look after her father because of his drinking and gambling habits. She is very determined to get her parents back together and tries every chance she gets to make them reconcile, though her attempts usually end in failure. Kogoro is very protective of Ran. There are many times when Kogoro shows concern for his daughter's safety, often getting serious when Ran is in trouble. He is concerned about Ran's relationship with Shinichi, as well.

====Conan Edogawa====
Kogoro took in Conan after he had 'solved' the case in episode 2, saying that Conan was his 'luck' and allowing Conan to live with them. He has been suspicious of Conan's behavior at times, but quickly drops his suspicions as ridiculous. Ever since Yukiko (disguised as Conan's nonexistent mother) gave Kogoro a large sum of money for Conan's expenses, he has been more than happy to take care of Conan.

====Yoko Okino====
Yoko is Kogoro's idol. He always watches her television appearances and admires her. Yoko sometimes invites Kogoro to host a show or appear on commercials, which helps to spread his fame as a detective.

====Shinichi Kudo====
They are both detectives, but due to Shinichi being the better detective, Mouri is constantly complaining about how he never gets any work because of the 'detective brat' taking all of the cases. He is also against his daughter being with Shinichi so much, likely due to his own rocky marriage with his childhood friend.

====Tooru Amuro====
[[File:名侦探柯南-第679集000347.jpg|thumb|right|Amuro wants to go on a case with Kogoro.]][[Tooru Amuro]] became Kogoro's apprentice in the [[Wedding Eve]] case in exchange for a large fee every time Kogoro brought him on a case. Amuro tends to act ingratiating whenever Kogoro Mouri is around, and is especially fawning over his "Mouri-sensei". Kogoro is alternatively flattered by Amuro's praise and annoyed with his effusive personality. Overall Kogoro tends to treat Amuro flippantly despite being paid a handsome sum for the apprenticeship. When among members of the Black Organization, Amuro doesn't speak too badly of Kogoro despite Kogoro's obvious incompetence. Amuro is becoming more skilled at herding Kogoro through cases without having the older man realize that Amuro is a far superior detective and is manipulating him for information.

====Juzo Megure====
Kogoro used to work with [[Juzo Megure]] when he was still part of the police force. Megure thought that Kogoro was incompetent as a police detective. Their relationship has dramatically improved since Conan began using Kogoro as a mouthpiece for his deductions. Juzo hates that the police have to rely on an outside detective to solve cases, yet he is also very grateful that Kogoro wraps up difficult cases that the police could have mishandled.

Kogoro is familiar with but usually respectful of Megure at all times. Megure, who has a bit of a love hate relationship with Mouri, tends to be exasperated around Kogoro, especially when Kogoro appears in middle of a case or while Kogoro is awake and making his usual bad deductions. Megure likes the "Sleeping Kogoro" persona much more. Megure has noted that Kogoro shows up unnaturally frequently at the scenes of murders, leading to him jokingly calling Kogoro a harbinger of bad luck or a "death god".

==== Inspector Yuminaga ====
Kogoro Mouri briefly was the subordinate of [[Inspector Yuminaga]] in the arson division. Kogoro's nickname for Yuminaga was "fiery old fossil". Yuminaga noted that Kogoro would always jump to the conclusion that every fire was an arson.

The name "Kogoro Mouri" came from two mystery-related sources. "Kogoro" came from "[[Kogoro Akechi]]", the detective created by [[Edogawa Rampo]], while Mouri came from [[Maurice Leblanc|'''Mauri'''ce Leblanc]]. Coincidentally, his drama actor, [[Takanori Jinnai]], has played Kogoro Akechi in many TV movies. The kanji for "Mouri" (毛利) comes from daimyo [[wikipedia:Mōri Motonari|Mouri Motonari]]. Coincidentally, Mouri sounds like 'mourir', the French word for 'to die'.

Sonoko is the daughter of Tomoko and Shiro Suzuki, heads of the extremely wealthy family and large company. Sonoko has an older sister, [[Ayako Suzuki|Ayako]], and an uncle named [[Jirokichi Suzuki|Jirokichi]], who is often involved in trying to capture the [[Kaitou Kid]]. Sonoko and Ran have been close friends since before Junior High School.

At the series' start, Sonoko's primary interest was in boys and in trying to snag the "perfect boy". Conan has had to use Sonoko sometimes when he needs to do a deduction show. At first he struggled to mimic Sonoko's mannerisms and feminine speech patters, but now he is better at it.<ref name=e79>[[The Bank Heist Murder Case|Episode 79: The Bank Heist Murder Case]]</ref> However, because he has had to use Sonoko so often for a deduction, Sonoko, like [[Kogoro Mouri]], completely buys into her whole "sleeping" person, calling herself the best detective in [[Setting#Teitan High School|Teitan High School]], and a "Deduction Queen."<ref name=e79 /> This makes Conan sometimes regret using her to solve a case, though he does admire her courage in certain situations. == Appearance ==
When not in the Teitan High School uniform, Sonoko often wears a bandanna holding back her fringe, a skirt, and a cute shirt. Her clothes often show more skin compared to Ran, mostly for the purpose of attracting guys. In [[Countdown to Heaven]], she temporarily changes her hairstyle to a perm.

== Plot overview ==

Conan and Ran visit Sonoko's mountain villa to see the autumn leaves and meet up with some old friends. On the way to the front they see a strange bandaged man in a dark cloak crossing the bridge. When they see him he turns around, shocking them with his face and eye contact as he quickly makes a retreat around the side of the house. Everything seems fine as Ran tries to find her room, accidentally walking in on the men also staying the house. When everyone is asked about the bandaged man he is brushed off as possibly a crazy man with nothing better to do. However, he is taken far more seriously when Ran is attacked in the woods, to be scared off by Conan, and later one of the women is seen being carried off by him from the windows. Conan and the other men give chase and find her dismembered body in the woods.

Everyone decides that it's best to go to bed for the night, when he strikes again, this time trying to kill Ran in her sleep. Conan saves Ran by waking her up to defend herself, but when the bandaged man retreats Conan wonders why Ran is a target. Everyone decides to stay up for the night and keep together to throw off the murderous man in bandages. Conan suspects that Ran saw something that made her a target, and the culprit is one of the people staying there. When Conan solves the case. Kogoro isn't there to be put to sleep, so he decides to solve the case by Ran. When he shoots the anesthetic needle, however, Sonoko end up in the way and she falls asleep. Left with no choice, Conan reveals the killer via Sonoko. While Sonoko doesn't remember making the deductions, she is very proud of having "solved" the case.

At the end of the case, Conan asks Ran if she was meeting Shiro Wakaoji, a young man who was in the coffee shop with plans to take advantage of a "naive" teenage girl he met while skiing, despite his already having a girlfriend. She says no, but Shiro tries to flirt with her just before Sonoko announces her presence—Sonoko was his intended date, but she overheard Conan revealing Shiro's intentions. She slaps Shiro and storms away.

===Makoto's Introduction (Manga: [[Volume 22#Sonoko's Camera Case|219-221]], Anime: [[Sonoko's Dangerous Summer Story|153-154]])===
Sonoko, Ran, and Conan go to Izu, where Sonoko's schemes to get a boyfriend. At the beach, Sonoko takes a picture of Ran fixing her bathing suit and threatens to send the picture to Shinichi, since she teases Ran and Shinichi frequently about being an "old married couple". Sonoko also laments about her lack of a love life, just before a college student, Michiwaki, asks her out to lunch. Ecstatic at the romantic attention, she agrees to lunch and then also to dinner as well. However, due to being nervous, she has Ran and Conan come along for lunch. During the meal, Michiwaki tells a story that young brunette girls have been found murdered in the woods not far from the restaurant, once a year ago and once much more recently, but he offers to keep Sonoko safe.

Later, Sonoko is attacked when she interrupts a suspicious figure searching her belongings, and bites him before he escapes. The stoic and somewhat unfriendly [[Makoto Kyogoku|high school student]] that is working at the ''ryokan'' moves the group to another room. Ran thinks she has seen him somewhere before but cannot remember where. Michiwaki arrives muddy and wet and Conan suspects him of attacking Sonoko, but he does not have a bite mark on his arm. Makoto has a bandaged bicep and falls under suspicion but Sonoko says he wasn't the attacker because the attacker was hairy. Michiwaki, Sonoko, Ran, and Conan decide to have dinner at the ''ryokan'' because Michiwaki says his car broke down. Conan speculates that Sonoko's attacker was looking for the photographs she was taking during the trip, but cannot figure out why. Conan does not think there are any incriminating photos, but perhaps the murderer overheard Sonoko talking about the photographs and misunderstood.

The next day, Michiwaki, Ran and Conan go eat at a restaurant while Sonoko tries to doze in the car. Suddenly, the car starts rolling toward the nearby cliff edge, and Sonoko barely escapes with her life. However, there is not evidence pointing toward a culprit. Ran and Conan go to report the incident while Michiwaki keeps Sonoko company. When alone on a walk in the forest, Michiwaki reveals that he is the serial killer and Sonoko is his target. Before he can hurt her, Makoto appears and saves her with an impressive martial arts display. Ran realizes that Makoto is a champion she's seen in competitions before; Makoto confesses awkwardly that he loves Sonoko, to Sonoko's surprise and delight. Though Makoto is often traveling for tounaments, he and Sonoko maintain a long-distance relationship.

===Jodie's Introduction (Manga: [[Volume 27#Arcade Murder Case|271-273]], Anime: [[The Battle Game Trap|226-227]])===

Sonoko, Ran, and Conan are at the arcade taking sticker photos, which Ran realizes Sonoko suggested because Sonoko wants to put a sticker with her face on a letter to Makoto. Sonoko blushes but doesn't deny it. Soon after, they encounter their High School English teacher, Jodie Saintemillion, who is an avid gamer. Jodie introduces Ran to a virtual reality fighting game which uses mechanics to simulate a real fight. Ran loses to a gamer named Kengo Bito who taunts her for losing before going on to fight against his rival, Takayasu Shimizu. The battle is projected on a large screen, showing Bito's avatar overwhelming Shimizu's until just before the final blow. At the strange behavior, spectators check on Bito and discover that he is dead.

The police investigate and after reviewing the security camera's footage, they limit the suspects down to four people. When Conan deduces the culprit, he uses Sonoko again as he mouthpiece to expose the murderer. On the way home, Jodie says that Sonoko was like Kate Martin, and Ran says Sonoko was just like Shinichi. Ran and Sonoko part with Jodie on good terms.

===Girl Clubbing Case (Manga: [[Volume 28#Girl Clubbing Case|284-286]], Anime: [[Megure's Sealed Secret|217-218]])===
Ran and Sonoko shop for a sweater that Sonoko wants to buy for Makoto; Ran scold Sonoko when she realizes Sonoko wants to pass the sweater off as hand-knitted by her. Ran sends Sonoko ahead to join Kogoro and Conan at a pasta shop, where they had coincidentally encountered the police investigating serial attacks on Japanese women following the "ganguro" fashion with darkly tanned skin, bleached hair, turtlenecks, miniskirts and high platform boots. Ran gets turned around and ends up in the parking lot, where she discovers a fourth victim, dead.

During the investigation, Sonoko and Ran point out that the victims are wearing a jacket that wasn't theirs, and Conan realizes the victims were attacked just after leaving somewhere warm—their cars. Sonoko leaves to put her shopping in the car and then use the toilet, attracting the attention of someone in the crowd. It turns out the culprit blames the victim wearing platform shoes while driving on the death of his son, and he is attacking any woman who drives with platform shoes. Sonoko is wearing platform shoes, and when she leaves the department store toilet the culprit is waiting to attack her. Sonoko screams and runs away, but manages to knock off the hat and scarf hiding his face, leaving him determined to kill her so she can't identify him. As Sonoko runs, her ankle twists under her and she falls. When the murderer attacks her, however, Inspector Megure arrives in the nick of time to protect her and confront the culprit. Megure was injured while protecting Sonoko, and at the hospital, Superintendent Matsumoto tells Ran and Sonoko the story of a girl Megure knew who impersonated a serial killer's victims and was gravely injured. Sonoko and Ran are moved to tears, thinking that the girl died, but it turns out that she survived and is now Megure's wife.

Sonoko shows off to Ran what she made in pottery class, a small cup for her with Makoto's name on it and a large cup for Makoto with her name on it. Her purpose is to have Makato think of her every time he drinks from it, so that he can't forget her and fall in love with another woman. She invites Ran to join the pottery class as well, and Ran thinks of Shinichi and accepts. As Ran works on her project, Sonoko tries to have Ran confess what she's written on the cup, but Ran refuses. Meanwhile, Conan sneaks in to spy on them, but gets caught. Sonoko keeps teasing Ran as they continue working, until a strange crash leads Ran to investigate—but not before warning off Sonoko from checking on Ran's project. A murder has occurred, and Conan investigates to discover the culprit. On finding the truth, he uses "Deduction Queen Sonoko" to reveal the killer.

A few days later, Sonoko shows Ran a picture that Makoto sent her—to Sonoko's embarrassment, Makoto mistook her cup for a vase, and sent her a picture showing off the flowers he'd put in it.

[[Kogoro Mouri]] receives an invitation to a Halloween cruise; the Halloween cruise is famous for hiring guests to star in a horror film. Sonoko lends her makeup skills tu turn Kogoro into a vampire. Because Ran hates horror-themed things, Sonoko ends up going to party as Kogoro's guest, dressed as a witch. During the cruise, the party members are divided into groups; team "Devil" consists of Kogoro, Sonoko, and people disguised as a werewolf, a mummy, a medusa and an invisible man. During the party, the host is murdered by a crossbow arrow with a card identifying team devil attached. Sonoko investigates with Kogoro and both suspect the mummy, who has no card, but later it is revealed to have been a trick. Sonoko is shocked when the invisible man turns out to be Shinichi, who solves the case, although he is later revealed to have actually been [[Heiji Hattori]] in disguise.

Sonoko joins Ran in visiting Jodie at the hospital. She tells Jodie she is very surprised that Jodie is a FBI agent. Later, Sonoko also talks with Ran about what Ran did during the Halloween cruise, and about Jodie's photos.

At the beginning of the case, Sonoko is walking with Ran and Conan to return home after school. She complains about the heat and says she should emulate Eisuke, who disappears after school.

Sonoko and Ran play tennis while Conan watches. Sonoko likes Takao Goto, the tennis club vice-captain, but suddenly Goto dies. Inspector Yamamura investigates, and accuses Sonoko of being the culprit despite the other three suspects. Conan discovers the truth and uses Sonoko to solve the case, proving her innocence. After Sonoko wakes back up, Ran expresses her relief and Sonoko is upset with Yamamura for suspecting her.

Meanwhile, even though Ran knows that Sonoko has a lot of money, she always makes sure that money never gets involved in their friendship. While Conan's voice gives an introduction to the chapter, the camera passes across Conan and then shows the faces of Conan and Shinichi staring outward. Floodlights turn on, Conan aims his stun-gun wristwatch, and a split-screen shows Kogoro slumping against a pillar while Conan walks around a crime scene. Conan also uses the voice-changing bowtie before stills of Inspector Megure, Takagi, Professor Agasa, and Kogoro flash by. Conan running fades into Ran on the phone, crying, and then to Ran taken hostage by a culprit as Shinichi and then Conan runs along the side of the screen. The scene changes to Conan with the Detective Boys, and Ayumi kissing Conan provokes Genta and Mitsuhiko to chase him.
