**Just outside the park, Conan saw two men who hurriedly left in a white car
**Inside the trunk were paper bags with lots of money inside
**Ayumi found a saw covered in a slippery fluid
**Ayumi discovered a girl's head wrapped in newspaper
**The suspects were heard talking about ransom money and killing the girl who saw their faces

* Conclusion

Turns out, the kidnappers were stage actors for a mystery play, and the head was a fake. Since Conan ruined the head and knocked out the other actor, the Detective Boys took part in the play so the show could go on. The three boys played the man in a brown coat: Genta, saying the lines, was at the bottom, Mitsuhiko in the middle and on Genta's shoulders, and Conan on top of them, with a hat, a mustache, and sunglasses. Ayumi played the dead girl covered in fake blood and hid inside a bag. And during the play, while acting with a dead face, she thought, "I am never playing hide and seek again!"
Situation
Kogoro Mouri received a strange cut-and-paste letter from a client called Asou Keiji asking him investigate something on Tsukikage Island. He then found out that the man requesting for the investigation, Keiji Asou, has been dead for 12 years. He was a world-renowned pianist who suddenly killed his family, set his house on fire, and played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata as his house burnt around him. Despite thinking the letter is a poor prank, Kogoro decides to investigate anyway and finds the island is holding elections for mayor. Two years ago, a passerby heard the Moonlight Sonata playing from the community center and discovered the body of the mayor slumped over the piano. Although he died from a heart attack, the similarity to the death of Keiji Asou caused the islanders to think the piano has cursed.
:*The Moonlight Sonata sheet music was found, but the notes in the fourth bar were “strange”.
:*No one would bother writing a suicide note in code.

:*After the third murder, Conan returned to the piano room and found a tuning hammer for the piano.
:*Under the piano was a secret drawer with drugs in it.
:*Upon looking at the pictures of the crime scene where Kuroiwa was murdered, there was a button with its red light on near the victim's neck.
:*Conan found that Hirata has powder-like substance under his sleeves and his left hand was bandaged. He also had lots of foreign money with him.
:*Asou Keiji left sheet music in his safe to which it read: “To my son, Seiji”. Asou had a son who became ill when he was a child and had to be hospitalized.

*Conclusion

The person who knocked out Murasawa in the piano room was Hirata. The bandage on his left hand was the result of smashing the window when he was trying to escape. He was also the one that Kogoro and Conan chased outside the piano room. The piano room was his meeting place with Kawashima when doing business: dealing drugs. He was using the piano's secret compartment as a hiding place of drugs he got from overseas to which he exchanged later for large sums of money. The reason why he was always talking about the cursed piano was because he wanted to keep everyone in the town away from it. Murasawa saw the drugs that he had left in there earlier so he hit him. Still, he was unrelated to the murders because he wouldn't have related the piano to the crimes.

In the second murder, they found that he had been dead for only a few minutes but when Conan fell on the code of blood, it didn't smear when it takes 25-30 minutes for human blood to dry. It was just a trick that the killer used to manipulate the time of death of the victim. Upon looking at the pictures, there was a button that was lighted near Kuroiwa's neck. But after the body was moved, the light was turned off. This was actually the reverse button. While the police weren't looking, the killer turned off the light. The killer used the reverse side (the blank side that didn't have the song), which played for over 30 min and then it reversed. That was when the 5 minutes and 30 seconds of gap played before the music started.

In the third murder, the killer didn't have the time to put a chair or desk at Nishimoto's feet because he had to escape in time. The killer was probably male because the murders required a lot of physical strength.

The purpose of drowning Kawashima was to send the forensic examiner back to Tokyo, because it was impossible to do an autopsy on the island. The tape in the second murder was a setup so the killer could create an alibi.

Conan deduced that the killer was Dr. Asai Narumi and that she was, in fact, Asou's son, Seiji. Asai was probably the surname of the family that adopted him. After graduation, he came to the island as a female doctor. The pronunciation of his name was not written on his diploma, nor the medical license, because if they checked his history, they would have found out that he was a man. He stayed all night so that they'd make him last for questioning.

As for Murasawa, he was an admirer of the late Asou and he was the one who kept the donated piano in tune just like that night.

Seiji then committed suicide by dying like his father. Conan failed to stop him, but he played one last music code message in the burning flames: "Thank you, little detective."

*Motive

Seiji's motive dated back when his father, the pianist, and his family was murdered. Kawashima, Nishimoto, Kuroiwa, and Kameyama used Asou's international concerts as a front for their international drug trade. When Asou stated that he wouldn't cooperate any longer, they got scared that their secret might be exposed. This was all written in the sheet music that he left behind in the safe as his confession to his son. Seiji was hospitalized in Tokyo at the time of the murder.

Seiji went back to the island to avenge his family's death. When he told Kameyama that he was Asou's son, the late mayor was terrified and told him everything. He then had a heart attack. Seiji played the Moonlight Sonata that his father loved so much upon seeing the mayor dead.
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**There were marks on the front door lock of the Akagis' house indicating a forced entry.
**The shoe rack contained men's and children's shoes only.
**The way Ryoko rummaged through the cupboards was as if she didn't know where the utensils were.
**One of the rooms was trashed. A picture of a man and a boy confirmed that its occupant was a child named Mamoru Akagi and a man.
**The man who was with Mamoru in the picture was Hideo Akagi, the professional soccer player whom Ryoko was watching on TV.

* Conclusion
Conan knew that something was up because he didn't really know Ryoko. With the clues at hand, Conan pieced things together.

He immediately called Ryoko as Shinichi using the Voice-Changing Bowtie and the Portable Bentou Box Fax. He confirmed that Mamoru was kidnapped. Mamoru was Hideo's older brother whom Hideo has been taking care of since their parents died two years ago. Hideo was ordered by the kidnapper to throw the game. Threatened that Mamoru would be hurt if the police was involved, Ryoko decided to pose as Shinichi's girlfriend.

When Ryoko came over to make breakfast, she found a letter left by the kidnapper and another which the kidnapper apparently made Mamoru wrote. Ryoko faxed Conan a ripped letter with the words: "Brother, resurrect me."

While trying to find more clues in Mamoru's room, Conan thought that it was just too messed up, even if the child retaliated. With further investigation, Conan found an empty game box called Onimaru Quest - a game where the hero has to be 'resurrected'. The main character in that game was named Mamoru. Another character in the game was named Naoki. Uemura Naoki was a soccer player who joined the Tokyo Spirits a year ago. He was also Hideo's good friend who lives nearby.

Conan deduced that Mamoru was with Naoki and that it was just made to look like it was a case of kidnapping. The note that Mamoru left must have been a part of the whole saying that he was going to Naoki's to have his character revived.

The group rushed to Naoki's place and sure enough, they found Mamoru there unharmed.

* Motive

Naoki envied Hideo because even though their skills were pretty much the same, Hideo was still more popular than he was. He came close to surpassing Hideo, but during one of their practices, Hideo accidentally injured his leg. Naoki thought that it was done on purpose so he wouldn't be able to play.

Naoki didn't plan to hurt Mamoru. He would send Mamoru home after the soccer finals and Naoki would disappear after getting back at Hideo.
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**Imatake Satoru's murderer was his long-time friend and colleague, Sasai Norikazu. He shot the unsuspecting victim point-blank and left the scene immediately after.
**Imatake was found dead with traces of toothpaste on his mouth and a toothbrush lying on the ground near him. His wallet was empty and the room was ransacked.
**Sasai was the primary suspect, but he had an alibi. In his disposable camera, there were pictures of him at the festival; and the festival events coincided with the time the killing took place.

* Conclusion
Conan, aiding Inspector Yokomizo through Kogoro Mouri, proved that it wasn't just a simple case of robbery and that Sasai was indeed the killer.

Imatake was murdered while brushing his teeth, an act done without inhibitions in front of people whom a person is very familiar with. The bad condition of the room was evidence enough that the robbery was a setup, for the killer fled the scene right away after the gun was fired. And the pictures that were seemingly taken that night proving Sasai's innocence were actually taken from the past Tenkaichi festival. In the picture, his wrist was captured without its current watch tan line.

* Motive
Over a year ago, Sasai felt ridiculed when the more well-known writer Imatake's work was chosen to be published over his at the last minute. Imatake apparently became famous when he won an award for a book that they co-wrote, while Sasai wasn't credited for it.

Sasai planned the murder, so that he could take Imatake's place as top writer in the literary world.</spoiler>
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**The security camera recorded Manaka as he seemingly waited for someone. Suddenly, with agility and precision, the relic knight behind him struck him with its sword. While it prepared to strike again, the owner barely managed to grab a painting tag, write something down and throw the pen away. The knight slashed and a final thrust ended his life.
**Inspectors Megure and Kogoro found a museum staff's name, Kubota, written in the crumpled paper in Manaka's hand.
**Conan also found the pen on the floor;
**The bloodied suit of armor was discovered in Kubota's locker.
**Conan noticed that the pen had its point retracted, the crumpled paper had inkless pen marks on it, and that the artwork tags were in the room, but the pieces weren't. Certainly, Kubota, who didn't seem to have a penchant for the arts, wouldn't have thought to protect those from being damaged.

* Conclusion
Manaka was scheduled to have a meeting with Ochiai, the art museum director. Little did the owner know that the director already staged his death. Ochiai dressed himself with the suit of armor, strategically placed the tag with Kubota's name written on it and the pen with which Manaka apparently used to write the note, then murdered Manaka medieval style.

But the little eye of justice had tricks of his own. Conan pulled an "innocent" act of wanting the directions to the toilet be written by Ochiai. And before the director knew it, he drew the inkless pen from his pocket.

* Motive
In the hopes of getting the art museum to stay opened, the previous owner who got bankrupt sold the museum to Manaka. Manaka, however, was consumed by his own greed and planned to convert the building into a casino.

Ochiai was not going to let it happen as he considered the artworks as his own. He killed Manaka to prevent the inevitable.

And as for Kubota, Ochiai thought it just right to punish the person who had been selling art relics and pieces secretly.
Manga to anime change
In the manga, this story takes place after the Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case, as Ran gets a letter from Natsue who mentions that she and Takeshi are living a more quiet life on the ranch. Natsue tells Ran to give her regards to her "detective boyfriend", which sets up the story. The anime version starts with Mitsuhiko, Ayumi and Genta asking about Shinichi and whether he is Ran's boyfriend.
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**Two years ago, an anonymous person started sending Dr. Ogawa boxes full of toys, along with some cash, on the first day of each month. And once every year on a winter, Morning Glory flowers get delivered to the hospital where he worked.
**Dr. Ogawa received the flowers on that exact same day. However, this time the money came separately with a letter.
**Coincidentally, as Conan was playing with one of the toys, he discovered that there was a username in the video game that was not of Dr. Ogawa's five-year old son, Yuta. He rummaged through patient records and found that Tomoya Ogino, indeed, was a kid who passed away three years ago on that day after being operated on by the doctor.

* Conclusion
Conan deduced that the presents were not given to Dr. Ogawa in gratitude, but with grudge and hate, by someone related to Tomoya Ogino.

Sensing that Yuta was in danger, they rushed and found him in a park near his kindergarten with an unknown man. Turned out, this man was Tomoya's father, who planned to end Yuta's life on the same day and at the same age that Tomoya died. The father lured Dr. Ogawa and Yuta with his son's old toys and life insurance money, and sent his son's favorite flower to commemorate his death.

Had Conan not interfered by kicking a nearby soccer ball towards the man, Yuta wouldn't have been saved from an ill fate.

As for Ran, she stopped her suspicion that Conan was Shinichi. He had asked Dr. Agasa to call Ran as him using the Voice-Changing Bowtie.

* Motive
Tomoya's father could not accept that Tomoya died not of surgical complications from Dr. Ogawa's hands. He blamed Dr. Ogawa and planned to have his revenge by taking away what he believed was also taken from him: a father's son.
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**Katsuhiko’s heart literally stopped on Valentine's Day. Beside his dead body, a cigarette and a chocolate bar were found among his usual items.
**Before the tragedy, he was in his small party where they ate and drank. On Valentine’s day (because of the tradition), each girl gives a guy a bar of chocolate, to which the guy would consume preferentially.
**Conan noticed that even though her son died, Katsuhiko's mother is doing the dishes.
**Susumu drank the coffee, which makes his mother mad, but she suddenly had a change of heart and gave him some cake despite Susumu's previous troubles with cavities.

* Conclusion
After putting Kogoro to sleep with the Stun-Gun Wristwatch, Conan, using the Voice-Changing Bowtie, revealed how Katsuhiko’s real killer was his mother.

Katsuhiko does not smoke with filters, that’s why Naomichi’s attempt to poison him through this, failed. Meanwhile, his mother knew his habits, and put poison in his coffee, knowing that he wouldn’t eat the antidote in the cake. The reason she had a change of heart when Susumu drank the coffee is because he drank the coffee with the poison, so she quickly gave him the antidote in the cake so he wouldn't die. She also framed Yoshimi by switching the chocolates she gave him with a half-eaten bar that Katsuhiko apparently ate. Though his mother immediately washed all the cups and switched the chocolates, poison lingers much deeper than the naked eye could see.

* Motive
When her husband’s business took a turn for the worse, Katsuhiko's mother had to think of the quickest way to acquire Katsuhiko’s estate, and save the house.

Katsuhiko is an orphan who was adopted by his only living relative when he was a kid. His foster mother knew he fell in love with Yoshimi since she closely resembled his deceased mother, so she framed her.
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**Conan remembers the Vodka lookalike saying "I can finally have a smoke". Conan realizes this must be because the transaction the men in black had with the person in the dining car cannot stand the smell of smoke. Therefore the person with the bomb must be in a non-smoking car of the train. According to Mitsuhiko there are eight non-smoking cars on the bullet train.
**The Gin lookalike made a remark about how the person with the bomb is probably "looking out at the last scenic view" they will ever see. Conan and the Detective Boys realize the person with the briefcase must be in one of the two-story Green Cars. Mitsuhiko explains only one of the three Green Cars is non-smoking.
**Conan notes that the man in glasses with the laptop is trading stocks and has a gold Rolex watch. Conan remarks the man must really be raking in money. The man in glasses shouts at Conan that he could not possibly go anywhere on the train due to the amount of work he has.
**The woman in the Green Car has a cell phone and remarks to Conan that since the sky is clear today "you can see Mt. Fuji" from her window. The woman claims to have not visited the dining car during the trip.
**The elderly man does not seem to hear Conan's question correctly, so Conan is unclear whether the man did or did not visit the dining car.
**Although the brutish man with gold rimmed glasses doesn't answer Conan's question outright, it's clear the man visited the dining car because he wipes his glasses with one of the dining car napkins.
**When the Vodka lookalike questions his partner about the bomb being timed, the Gin lookalike replies that although the bomb isn't on a timer, the bomb will definitely go off when the person with the briefcase unknowingly triggers the detonation button. Conan realizes this means the explosion will be set off by the passenger's "reaction to something".

* Conclusion

After ruling out the brutish man Conan knows went to the dining car (the briefcase was full of underwear), Conan realizes one of the passengers he spoke to said something strange.

The woman claims to have had a great view of Mt. Fuji earlier in the train ride, but it would be impossible to see Mt. Fuji from her window in the Green Car. She must have been in the dining car at the time and mistook her view from the dining car for the one back in her Green Car seat.

The woman lied about going to the dining car in order to cover up the transaction she had with the men in black.

Conan also realizes that the detonation button the Gin lookalike referred to is when the woman dials a specific telephone number on her cell phone.

The woman manages to dial the number on her cell phone at 3:10 PM, but thankfully Conan manages to use the Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes to kick the briefcase out of the train just before it exploded.

* Motive

The woman's motive for making a deal with the men in black was to gain "inside information on the trading market" in exchange for 100 million yen.

The men in black's motive for planting the bomb of course was to kill off the woman and cover their tracks while getting away with a hefty amount of money.

</spoiler>

Manga to anime changes
* In the manga, the two men in black are in fact Gin and Vodka. It is here that Conan first learns of their codenames.
* Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko didn't appear in the manga version of the story. Thus, it's Ran who deposits the gum that Conan uses.
* The manga version ends with Conan reflecting on the knowledge he learned about the two men in black. Ran's questioning of his true identity doesn't occur here, but in The Coded Map of the City Case (which follows the story in the manga rather than preceeding it).
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**There's no doubt that Dino Cavane and his accomplices are responsible for the theft of the Maple Leaf coins, but Cavane refuses to say where the coins are hidden.
**Conan and the Detective Boys find a piece of paper with odd symbols drawn on it and the word "ORO" as they leave a museum.
**After looking at an Italian-Japanese dictionary, Conan realizes "ORO" means "Gold" in Italian. Conan is shocked to realize he and the Detective Boys really did find a treasure map.
**Conan is puzzled why someone who is Italian would make a reference to a Japanese street name near Touto Tower.

* Conclusion

Conan realizes that the shapes on the treasure map really refer to the shapes of neon signs near Touto Tower. It wouldn't make sense for someone who does not speak Japanese to make a reference to a Japanese named street, but rather draw pictures of a recognizable objects they saw.

Conan and the Detective Boys manage to find the location of the missing Maple Leaf coins, only to be confronted by Cavane's thugs. Thanks to Conan's quick thinking, Conan and the Detective Boys manage to knock the thugs unconscious and run to the police.
Manga to anime change
* An entire portion of the story is left out of the anime where Ran takes Conan, Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko to Touto Tower. She recalls a time when she and Shinichi visited the tower and when he bought her a cold drink, which he put up to her cheek. Conan does the same thing, which prompts her to ask him about his true identity (as the manga version takes place after the The Shinkansen's Bomb Case). Conan responds by stating that he is Kamen Yaiba.
<spoiler>
*Evidence
**Conan discovers a hoop earring underneath a couch in Yoko's apartment. Yoko reveals this earring belongs to Yuko Ikezawa, her rival.
**Yuko, despite claiming never to have been in Yoko's apartment before, seems to know where the bathroom is located and that the Statue of Liberty figurine in the apartment is actually a lighter.
**Yamagishi explains that Yoko's apartment's spare key has been missing for awhile.
**Yamagishi removed a strand of hair from Fujie's hand when he pretended to slip on the floor. When Conan retrieves the hair, he realizes Yamagishi must think it belongs to Yoko.
**Conan discovers an odd indentation mark on the floor as well as traces of water. He also notes that it is strange that only a chair is standing upright on the floor near the body while the rest of the room is in shambles.
**Megure upon entering Yoko's apartment, notes that the room seems to be at an unusually hot temperature.

* Conclusion

Conan knocks Kogoro unconscious by kicking him in the head with an ashtray. Using the voice-changing bowtie, Conan as Kogoro reveals the truth behind the strange things that happened to Yoko, as well as the murder.

Yuko is responsible for the missing apartment key, threatening phonecalls, etc. This is why Yuko knew where Yoko's bathroom was and why she knew the Statue of Liberty was actually a lighter.

Conan as Kogoro reveals that the Fujie's murder was not a murder at all; Fujie committed suicide. Fujie committed suicide by freezing a knife inside a block of ice and then falling backwards onto the knife from the chair in the room. The odd indentation in the floor was caused by the knife when Fujie landed on it. The water spots on the floor are from the melted ice. Before killing himself, Fujie turned up the heat in Yoko's apartment in order to melt the ice, and therefore evidence, away.

* Motive

Yuko's motive for playing mean pranks and tricks on Yoko was to frighten her and find potential scandal material.

Fujie's motive for committing suicide was Yuko's startling reaction to Fujie grabbing her on the shoulder. (Fujie used to be Yoko's boyfriend until Yamagishi asked him to break up with her for the sake of Yoko's career.) Mistaking Yuko for being his only love Yoko, Fujie took this reaction to mean that Yoko never wanted to see him again. Unable to bear with this thought, Fujie committed suicide, framing Yoko for the murder.
<spoiler>
*Evidence
**Conan discovers a hoop earring underneath a couch in Yoko's apartment. Yoko reveals this earring belongs Yuko Ikezawa, her rival.
When Conan retrieves the hair he realizes Yamagishi must think it belongs to Yoko.
**Conan discovers an odd indentation mark on the floor as well as traces of water. He also notes that it is strange that only a chair is standing upright on the floor near the body while the rest of the room is in shambles.
**Megure upon entering Yoko's apartment notes that the room seems to be at an unusually hot temperature.

* Conclusion

Conan knocks Kogoro unconscious by kicking him in the head with an ashtray. Using the voice-changing bowtie, Conan as Kogoro reveals the truth behind the strange things that happened to Yoko as well as the murder.

* Motive

Resolution
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**Conan hints to Kogoro that it is strange that Jumbo the guard dog did not bark at the man dressed in black kidnapping Akiko, since the kidnapper supposedly used the pine tree Jumbo was near to escape the household.
**Asao seemed surprised when Tani claimed the kidnapper was asking for ransom money in addition to shutting down his company temporarily.
**During a phonecall with the kidnapper, Akiko manages to say she thinks she's in the storeroom of a school and sees a chimney outside the window.

* Conclusion
Kogoro, thanks to hints from Conan, figures out that Akiko's kidnapping is a fake and that she should be in a nearby hotel.

Unfortunately, Akiko was kidnapped for real after the fake kidnapping by a man demanding ransom money in return for Akiko's safety.

After searching nearby schools using Jumbo as transportation and a guide, Conan determines that what Akiko saw outside the school window wasn't a chimney at all, but rather the side of a large skyscraper. Conan then finds Akiko but is unable to take down the kidnapper due to his shrunken size. Thankfully, Ran uses her karate on the kidnapper in the nick of time.

* Motive
Akiko's motive for getting Asao to cooperate with her "kidnapping" was that she wanted to spend more time with her father who is always at work and doesn't play with her very much anymore.
</spoiler>

Manga to anime changes
*The younger Shinichi is in a medical center at Tropical Land whereas in the anime he runs off after being awoken by the police.
*In the manga, Tani immediately puts the vacation plans with Akiko on hold (much to the latter's disappointment). The anime leaves this scene out.
*Rather than showing Conan being introduced to his new class (with Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko as students), the manga version of the story end with Conan reflecting on how he is incapable of fighting the bad guys in his younger form.
Dub changes
*In the English Dub, Ran pointed out that Kogoro did not have a case, with him responding that he polished off a case (a case of beer), whereas in the Japanese Version, Ran states that his messy office is why Eri left him and why Kogoro hasn't had work with him responding that he's selective with his job.
*In the English Dub, Conan blushes during Ran's hug because his disguise worked, whereas in the Japanese Version he blushed because he felt her chest.
Resolution
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**Conan hints to Kogoro that it is strange that Jumbo the guard dog did not bark at the man dressed in black kidnapping Akiko, since the kidnapper supposedly used the pine tree Jumbo was near to escape the household.
**Asao seemed surprised when Tani claimed the kidnapper wass asking for ransom money in addition to shutting down his company temporarily.
**During a phonecall with the kidnapper, Akiko manages to say she thinks she's in the storeroom of a school and sees a chimney outside the window.

* Conclusion

* Motive
Akiko's motive for getting Asao to cooperate with her "kidnapping" was that she wanted to spend more time with her father who is always at work and doesn't play with her very much anymore.
</spoiler>

Dub changes
*In the English Dub, Ran points out Kogoro not having a case with him responding that he polished off a case (a case of beer), whereas in the Japanese Version Ran states that his messy office is why Eri left and why Kogoro hasn't had work with him responding that he's selective with his job.
*In the English Dub, Conan blushes during Ran's hug because his disguise worked, whereas in the Japanese Version he blushed because he felt her chest.

The Roller Coaster Murder Case is the first episode that aired on January 8, 1996 in Japan. It is the pilot episode of the series. The story begins right in the middle of a case where a murder has been committed in a private mansion. At this moment, we see both Inspector Megure and Shinichi Kudo for the very first time and are able to witness the impressive deduction skills of Shinichi while he reveals the killer.

Characters introduced
Most of the main characters are introduced throughout the episode. It is interesting to note the presence of Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta who only appear a bit later in the manga (in Volume 2).
Case 1: Crime at the Private Mansion
Situation
The episode starts in a mansion where a party seemed to have been interrupted after a man was found dead with a bullet in his heart. The police, led by Inspector Megure, is investigating the crime scene. The victim is President Yamazaki of Yatsubishi Bank. That's when Shinichi makes his grand entrance and claims having figured out the case.
Resolution
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**Shinichi states that the room Yamazaki was killed in was locked from the inside. The only possible entrance into the room was the window.
**The mansion owner claims that there is at least a 10 meter gap between the two windows Shinichi states the killer used. Shinichi points out however that if the killer used the roof to get closer to the other window this gap is shortened to a mere 2 meters and therefore could be easily jumped across.
**Shinichi notes that there is an indentation on the balcony where the killer attached a rope with a piece of wood at the end, allowing the killer a way to get back across to the 3rd floor window, as it is impossible for the killer to have successfully landed on the 10 centimeter roof ledge coming back. By using a piece of wood rather than simply tying the rope to the balcony the killer was able to remove evidence of his method of escape while on the other side of the building.
**The lack of footprints below the window implies it was an inside job.
**Shinichi claims to have spoken with the killer's doctor.
* Conclusion
Shinichi concludes that the murderer could only have been someone who knew the mansion very well and eventually points his finger at the owner. The latter, being in a wheelchair, then starts to laugh claiming he's in no position to be able to commit such a crime. Shinichi then grabs a globe and throws it towards the owner who immediately jumps out of his chair to avoid it. The maid and guests are all in shock. Shinichi then says that he's been healed for a while now as reported by his doctor, which Megure confirms.
* Motive
Although the episode does not clearly state the mansion owner's motive, it likely had something to do with the "under-the-table" financial dealings the owner had with Yamazaki.
After Shinichi explains to Ran why he quit the soccer team and tells her that he wants to become a detective like the fictional Sherlock Holmes, Ran reminds Shinichi of a promise he made with her: if Ran won the regional karate championship, Shinichi would go with her to the amusement park, Tropical Land. Shinichi demonstrates his deductive reasoning to Ran when he correctly deduces that a girl standing in line in front of them for the Mystery Coaster is a gymnast. Shinichi and Ran's date is cut short when a murder occurs while they're riding the roller coaster. Who is responsible for killing Kishida, and how did they do it?
<spoiler>
* Evidence
**Shinichi examines the tunnel area of the Mystery Coaster and finds a wire with some pearls still strung onto it and a hook at the end of the wire.
**The killer left a false piece of evidence, a bloodied knife, inside Aiko's purse with the intention of framing her. Shinichi proves this is a fake piece of evidence claiming it is impossible for a woman to have used enough force to behead someone while on the ride.
* Conclusion
Shinichi states the killer used an object like a purse or a backpack to escape the ride restraints and wrap a wire around the victim's head while in the darkness of the Mystery Coaster's tunnel. After tying the wire around the victim's head the killer tossed a hook attached to the other end onto the roller coaster's track, beheading the victim using the coaster's speed and movement.

Shinichi concludes the murderer is Hitomi, as her expertise as a gymnast makes this feat possible. Shinichi proves her guilt through two crucial pieces of evidence:
# Hitomi's necklace (the murder weapon) is missing after the end of the ride
# Hitomi has a tear-trail on her face that runs horizontally which is impossible unless she was crying during the course of the ride.

* Motive
Hitomi's motive for murdering Kishida is because she used to go out with him long before she met Aiko and Reiko in college. Hitomi planned to murder Kishida at the place they had their first date (Tropical Land) using the very necklace he had bought for her. Had Shinichi not proven the truth behind the murder Hitomi was planning to commit suicide via drugs after the visit to Tropical Land.
Episode Resolution: Chasing the Men in Black
<spoiler>
Shinichi, suspicious of the two men dressed in all black that rode the coaster, decides to follow them on their way to the outskirts of Tropical Land, leaving Ran behind and telling her to head on home without him. Shinichi witnesses one of the men in the middle of an illegal transaction with somebody and doesn't pay attention to his surroundings. The other man dressed in black knocks Shinichi out from behind. The men, recognizing Shinichi as a detective, give Shinichi an un-tested poison in order to kill him and leave him to die. However, rather than killing Shinichi, the poison shrinks him down to the size of a seven year old.
Manga to anime changes
*The first episode of the anime includes the Detective Boys who don't appear until many chapters later in the manga.
*Hiroshi Agasa and Kogoro Mouri also appear in this episode, whereas in the manga they make their debut in the Company President's Daughter Kidnapping Case.
*The mansion owner kills his wife in the manga. In the anime the owner kills his friend, Yamazaki.
*In the manga, when Ran is trying to kick Shinichi, he leaps out of the way rather than his face ending up under her skirt.
*In the manga, Reiko points out that Gin and Vodka could have committed the murder as they were behind the victim. Shinichi acknowledges that they look suspicious, but if they pulled off the murder, they would have anticipated the arrival of the police (which they don't as they are in a hurry to pull off their transaction).
*Shinichi uses a camera when spying on Vodka, whereas in the anime, he simply just listens to the deal going on.
Dub changes
*In the English Dub, Agasa reactivates his rocket pack on purpose, whereas in the Japanese Version he does so unknowingly.
*In the English Dub, Kogoro takes offense to Ran's compliment of Shinichi, whereas the Japanese Version has him stating that he needs to make a living.
*In the English Dub, Ran sarcastically states that Shinichi looked at Hitomi's legs for the purpose of making a deduction, whereas in the Japanese Version she critiques him for knowing that Hitomi is a gymnast before shaking her hand.
*In the English Dub, Gin's reason for using the APTX 4869 was fear of leaving a bullet trail behind, whereas in the Japanese Version it was due to the cops still being around after the murder on the roller coaster.

Remastered version
On April 4, 2009, a remastered version of the case was aired. A few modifications were made in this new version : the victim's head doesn't land next to the Detective Boys and the scene where the viewer could see blood on the roller-coaster was cut.
