Masumi Sera reveals that she has a second brother whom she has been calling regarding case solutions.

Description and known facts
* He does not look like Shuichi Akai or Masumi Sera, who presumably resemble their mother. According to Masumi, her second brother looks more like their father.
* The middle brother is older than Masumi, but younger than Shuichi. Neither of their ages have been revealed, but Masumi attends class with Ran and Shinichi who are 16-17, and Subaru Okiya claims to be 27. The brother's former high school classmates are currently 28 and 29 years old, suggesting that the brother is probably similarly aged. Although if that were the case, then Shuichi would be older than 27.
* He is apparently in the middle of an important job and won't tell Masumi where he is. However, the fact that she was able to arrange a meeting with him means that she can see him in person.
* He is very intelligent; note that Masumi characterizes the already intelligent Shuichi as "strong" in contrast to the middle brother. He advises Masumi on cases via cellphone. He was able to correctly deduce over the phone that Masumi's deduction was unreliable in a bathroom murder case. While the middle brother is not a detective himself, his intelligence seems to be well-known among the students from his high school, as he apparently had solved some mysteries and puzzles easily in his class during his time studying there. It is unclear how long he has been helping Masumi — the first time Conan knows he was helping was in the bathroom murder case, but Masumi had made a phone call to an unknown person in an earlier case where Conan was kidnapped.
* In one panel, we see the middle brother responding to Masumi's message using his right hand and a black cellphone. Unless the brother is disguised, this would imply he has light skin. The use of the phone with the right hand is not an absolute indicator of handedness because sometimes characters with known handedness will use phones with their off hands.
* The middle brother recognizes Conan and knows he is a good detective. After an exchange of information regarding deductions, the brother asked Masumi who she was referring to. Masumi shows the brother Conan's picture thinking he will be surprised. The brother replies back that "if it's him, then there's no problem". Masumi is very surprised and wonders how her brother knows Conan. Her suspicion makes sense because Conan didn't exist prior to Shinichi shrinking. The brother later sends another text to Masumi, which makes Masumi think, "Ah, I see. So that's how it is."
* According to Masumi, the middle brother's surname had been "Sera", which he got from his mother's side, until he graduated from high school. His current surname in the present timeline is presumably something else.
<!-- * Masumi call him "Kichi-ni". -->
Plot Overview
Masumi's phone call during Detectives' Nocturne (Manga: 798-800, Anime: 672-674)
After Masumi took down the kidnapper with her motorcycle she received a call from an unknown person. Given her pattern of contacting her brother regarding cases, she may have called him concerning this one.

Bathroom murder case's failed deduction (Manga: 856-858, Anime: 740-741)
Masumi had called her brother regarding the "adultery case" she was about to investigate and was overheard by Eri. After the murder was discovered, Masumi relayed her brother the facts of the case and her deduction by phone call. He told Masumi her deduction was unreliable.

Bowling Alley drowning murder (Manga: 859-861, Anime: 744-745)
Conan asks Masumi who she called during the Masumi case, and she tells Conan about the existence of her second oldest brother who is very smart. Confronted with another murder case, Masumi texts her brother about the situation and her logic. Masumi also informs her brother that Conan seems to have figured out the case, but she isn't sure of her answer since her confidence has been shaken as of late. Her brother texts Masumi asking who she keeps talking about. Masumi sends him a picture of Conan and the brother replies that "it is no problem" if it is Conan doing the deducing. Masumi meanwhile wonders how her brother knows Conan. Masumi later receives one final text from her brother to which Masumi thinks "so that's how it is". At the end of the unseen message is a PS asking if she has "already met the wizard." Masumi looks over at Conan and thinks "You could say so..." while sending a reply.

Possible Suspects
<!--:Please consider a picture of the relevant character's most recent cellphone if they are Bourbon arc characters.-->
Assuming the middle brother is between 16 (assumed lower range for Masumi's real age) and 35 (assumed upper range for Shuichi's age based on his appearance and reasonable full-blooding sibling age separation) the following characters could qualify as suspects in reverse order of their introduction date. This age range can actually be narrowed down even more due to the Red Woman case, as the middle brother's classmates are stated to be 28-29, meaning that if he attended high school with them, he would be around that age. While it states they are classmates, which would imply they were in the same grade and class, it was not specifically stated, so its possible to increase the age range to between 27-30, though 28-29 is far more likely and would make more sense. Anyone not inside this age range could and should be excluded.

Minor or New Character
It's possible the middle brother is a minor character who was a suspect or witness in a case, but did not distinguish himself or demonstrate his intelligence. It's also possible for the middle brother to be a character who has not been introduced yet, but will be later in a flashback.

Characters introduced in the Bourbon Arc
<!--Only as an Anime suspect; he was introduced in File 613 in the Manga, and the beginning of the Bourbon arc in the Manga is File 622-->*Kansuke Yamato: Nagano police inspector (35)
*Subaru Okiya: Engineering student (27) (Revealed to be Shuichi Akai in disguise)
*Sugihito Enomoto: Poirot Café waitress Azusa Enomoto's brother (28)
*Taka'aki Morofushi (Komei): Nagano police inspector (35)
*Ashley Ares: Minerva Glass' tennis coach (30)
*Ryohei Onda: Kogoro Mouri imposter/University student (21)
*Rei Furuya: Black Organization member Bourbon (29)
*Wataru Date: Deceased Tokyo Metropolitan Criminal Investigation First Division police officer (would be ~29 if alive)
*Shukichi Haneda: Yumi's semi-ex-boyfriend (28)
*Mary: Mysterious child living with Masumi (appears to be of middle school age – 12-15)

Shukichi Haneda
While Shukichi being famous and recognizable may contradict Masumi not knowing where he is or what he is up to, it should be noted that his semi-ex-girlfriend had no idea that he is a renowned shogi Player, thus allowing for the possibility that, like Yumi, Masumi has not made the connection; since Masumi said that she doesn't know where her middle brother is, she is either lying about it or really doesn't know where he is living—if the latter is true, then Shukichi could be her brother, as they haven't met during Shukichi's two appearances so far. He has the right age range for the brother. If you remove the "k" in Shukichi you get Shuichi—it's possible that that their parents wanted them to have similar names. If one takes into account the difference in personality between Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, this could apply to Shuichi Akai, who is serious about taking on criminals and does so for a living, which fits Sherlock's personality, and Shukichi Haneda, who appears to be far less serious, in general, living a more leisurely existence, with Yumi describing him as a "a mooching stay-at-home freeloader," which fits Mycroft's personality, as does his intelligence.

Shukichi is very intelligent, realizing the truth behind the murder during his initial appearance and commenting on it, and he noticed Conan's intelligence—he thinks the situation is in capable hands, enough to risk becoming a suspect by not divulging his whereabouts at the time of the murder.

He and Conan simultaneously discover the clues to find where Yumi had been taken to on the day of Shukichi's final match. Subaru Okiya—who is really Shuichi Akai, and not given to displays of genuine happiness—smiled at the news that Shukichi had attained all seven shogi titles, and Mary—who very well could be the mother of Masumi and Shuichi—fell asleep watching Shukichi's shogi match and was visibly ecstatic when Shukichi won the match. The only other explanation of their happiness is if they are merely big fans of Shukichi.

Upon meeting in a ramen restaurant, both Yumi and Masumi describe Shukichi and the middle brother, respectively—going by each description, both men have near identical similarities. Both describe a man who wears round glasses, has a stubble, always wears a 'messy jersey', has an excellent memory, and has a certain favorite saying. Later on, Masumi calls her second brother for help with the case and Yumi calls Shukichi to see if he remembers something about the case, due to the fact that he saw the murderer run past him. Just after answering the call, Shukichi puts Yumi on hold to answer another call. Just a moment after Shukichi puts Yumi on hold, the middle brother answers Masumi call; he tells Masumi that he's on the phone with an important person, and she should call later. Just a moment after the middle brother hangs up on Masumi, Shukichi takes Yumi off of hold and continues talking to her. Shukichi's phone is black, and the model is, at the very least, strongly similar to the middle brother's phone. While Shukichi could have been turning down an interview request while he had Yumi on hold, he also could have been talking to Masumi. These two moments raise the probability of Shukichi being the middle brother even higher.

Yumi finally realizes that Shukichi is a shogi player and tries to find the envelope that he gave her at a previous christmas. She realizes that her apartment manager has managed to take it and she has to solve a puzzle to get it back. The contents of the envelope are revealed to be a marriage registration that shows the name of Shukichi's father to contain the family name "Akai". Meanwhile, Shukichi loses a match that cost him one of his shogi titles.

Gosho says that Masumi will call someone "Kichi-nii" which could indicate Shukichi as the middle brother as he is the only recent character with "kichi" in his name, however Masumi has yet to actually say those words in the manga so far. <!-- leave this at the bottom and separated until Masumi actually says the phrase "Kichi-nii" at some point --> And, in a postcard, Gosho said that Shukichi called Shuichi "niisan".

His age also supports him being the middle brother, as in the Red Woman Case, his classmates are ages 28-29, and his age being 29 makes it capable of them being classmates. With all these facts, it can be reasonably stated that he is the middle brother as he meets more criteria then anyone else, and enough to dismiss reasonable doubt. He met Conan and recognized his intelligence, he is the right age, he is highly intelligent, talks to someone else in the middle of talking to Yumi at the exact same time as Sera calls the middle brother, and the middle brother stops right at the same time he starts talking to Yumi again, has a father with the family name Akai, and both Subaru Okiya (Shuichi Akai in disguise) and Mary (who is close to Masumi Sera, Akai's younger sister) show interest in Shukichi by following his Shogi match.

Subaru Okiya
Although Subaru Okiya was revealed to be Shuichi Akai, it is possible that he arranged for his sister to have a way to contact him, and she doesn't know where he is or what he is doing because their only point of contact is via phone. His phone is black, and the model is, at the very least, strongly similar to the middle brother's, and he has been shown to wear a jacket with a similar pattern (see manga volume images at the top of the page) to the same clothing of the arm that the middle brother was wearing.

There are three conditions on which Subaru could be the "middle brother" or "the person contacting Masumi by phone": <BR>
1) Masumi made up the existence of a second brother because her oldest brother is supposed to be dead, meaning she couldn't tell people who she was talking to. This means that all of the descriptions of him to various people could either be fabrications, or descriptions of other people she knows. Also, because Masumi does not know that he would know Conan, he may have pretended not to know who was making the good deductions at the scene of the murder at the bowling alley, to see what she knows about him.<BR>
:1) Rebuttal : Since we now know that Shukichi has a father with the name Akai, its unlikely that the first option is possible. Masumi's descriptions clearly seem to fit him, so that only leaves the below two options.<BR>
2) Masumi actually has a middle brother, but is in contact with her oldest brother, but tells other people that she is in contact with the middle brother because the oldest brother is supposed to be dead. <BR>
3) Her oldest brother is in possession of a voice changer, in which case Masumi might not actually know that she is in contact with her oldest brother who is supposed to be dead, but think that she is in contact with her real middle brother. After witnessing how Conan uses a voice changer to become Shinichi to contact Ran in Yusaku Kudo's Cold Case, he may have begun using his voice changer to become his own middle brother to contact Masumi via phone. In this scenario he would have to pretend to have only the knowledge the real middle brother would have, such as not knowing who was making the great deductions at the crime scene of the bowling alley case. <BR>
4) Masumi is in contact with both of her brothers, but tells outside observers that it is only her second brother.

Taka'aki Morofushi
Taka'aki Morofushi is intelligent and has light skin. He was still working in Nagano as a police officer though, so Masumi should be able to find out where he was and what he was doing. Masumi also lacks a Nagano accent, something that might be expected learning Japanese with a family who lived in Nagano for a period of time. (Komei's lived in Nagano as a child.) Komei's most recently seen phone is a white clamshell phone. It is improbable that the middle brother is Morofushi though, given that he appeared in front of the middle brother's classmates without being recognised - and that the brother was supposedly unable to help them in investigating the Red Woman occurrences, but Morofushi was there to apprehend the killer. Also, Morofushi is 35 years old, much older than the middle brother. Masumi's description of the middle brother to Yumi does not match Morofushi's appearance.

Rei Furuya
Tooru Amuro
Rei's intelligence matches the middle brother's expected level; however, Rei's dark skin contradicts the light-colored hand holding the phone when texting Masumi. Rei has a white iPhone lookalike. However, on page 15 of Chapter 800<!--, as Rei thinks, "Why here...", there are markings around his eyes (albeit very small) that resemble those of Shuichi and Masumi, suggesting he may be related to them. Furthermore-->, his thoughts (i.e., "Why [is Masumi Sera] here..." suggests he knows Masumi. When Masumi sees Rei, she seems to wonder about his identity and thinks he is the one who approached her and Scotch, four years previously—this indicates that Masumi does not think that Rei is a brother of hers. Also, Bourbon, like Vermouth, is often in disguise, and either Rei's dark skin or the light-colored hand holding the cell phone can be makeup or a disguise. However, since Rei actually wanted the "older brother," Shuichi Akai, to be dead, it somehow contradicts the fact that he's the middle brother. Masumi's description of the middle brother to Yumi does not match Rei's appearance.

clear

Mary
Mary, who looks like a member of the Akai family, might be the brother after being shrunk by APTX 4869. However, the child's slowness to trust Conan and the middle brother's immediate trust of him seem to indicate that the child is not the middle brother, as well as the child's apparent name and gender.

<!-- * Masumi call him "Kichi-ni". -->

However, since Rei actually wanted her "older brother," Shuichi Akai, to be dead, it somehow contradicts the fact that he's the middle brother.

(Ran's towel falls off and Conan gets a severe nosebleed.)

Yui Uehara responds to the scene and concludes Masaie was bludgeoned and drowned. Everyone worries it may be the Red Woman, but Uehara assures them it can't since her death was confirmed 15 years ago along with Satoko's death in the bog, her name was Komayo Takeno. Later, the murder weapon is shown to be a dumbbell, and Sera noticed salt in the tub. Conan and Sera confirm their deductions, then a blackout occurs and Sumika is attacked by the Red Woman, leaving both detectives confused.
File 874 - Red Past
After attending to Sumika's injuries, Uehara learns Sera spent 3 years in the US; she returned to Japan and in her head says "to meet the wizard once more" while looking at Conan. While Uehara investigates the cabin, Inspectors Kansuke Yamato and Taka'aki Morofushi (Komei) look into the original Red Woman case by talking to the original officer on the case. Reviewing timeline of Satoko's and the Red Woman's deaths, Satoko was found with a red coat and the 'Red Woman'. Yamato calls to warn Uehara that something dangerous is in the woods, but the call dies from a storm.
Conan and Sera affirm their deductions and prove Sumika Kawana was the one who killed Masaie by bludgeoning him and hiding him in the tub. She used a bat and a fan to create the sounds of a vacuum to sound like Masaie was upstairs when he was already dead. Conan also shows that tomatoes don't float unless there is alt mixed in with the water. By adding more salt, she exposed the tomatoes and the body creating an alibi. Sera also points out that she was the woman in red they saw on the way to the cabin as she handed Sera the photos from earlier to investigate without hesitation while the other thought she was a boy. She killed Masaie because he had Satoko play the Red Woman for a prank, and she fell into the bog and died. But since she killed Masaie, who attacked her? The real Red Woman appears, but Yamato and Morofushi arrive and take her away. The woman who attacked Sumika was Shinobu Kagawa, the mistress of the man killed by the Red Woman, because Sumika was dressed as her. Conan later finds Sera's phone and a young girl with Akai eyes is with her.
He killed her because he thought she was trying to extort money and fame from him. After Hiura is arrested, Conan's bug on Sera is destroyed and the little girl from Sera's photo comments on Conan still having a long way before earning her trust. Conan, the Detective Boys and Ran go and visit an aquarium. However, Professor Agasa is still not there! Ai deduces that he has secretly gone to a fast food restaurant to eat yakisoba buns. She is right. Then, Genta decides that he wants that for lunch and asks if they could eat some. Fortunately, Ran knows that there is a cafe which sells cutely decorated children's dishes. Having said this, Genta wonders if Ran has come here before. At this point, she remembers the time when she and Shinichi came here, apparantly, less than a year has passed since they last came. She secretly wonders if Shinichi was in love with her at that time.

Ran's mind is then transported back in time to the day she was late coming to the aquarium. Shinichi complained about her making him come and being late herself. Ran had come up with a plan called the "Great Aquarium Reunion and Love Revival Plan". Shinichi apparantly came up with the setting of this reunion and Sonoko had come with the name of the plan. However, as they carried on talking about who Ran was texting and other things etc., Shinichi suddenly ran off into another direction whilst telling Ran to call for help. Shinichi had "smelt" out a dead body among the busy crowd of people looking at the sharks. This is where the main murder begins. The victim was killed with a knife enclosed in paper bag.

Background
Not much is known about Shukichi Haneda's past and background before he met Yumi, except that they met for the first time on a train where he overslept, resting his head on Yumi's shoulder, and Yumi waited for him even though she had to miss her stop. He also lived a rather wealthy life. It's also unknown when Shukichi started his career as a professional shogi player, but he had already attained the prestigious Meijin title back when he was still dating Yumi, without the latter knowing. It appears that Shukichi has some connection to both :Shuichi Akai (Subaru Okiya) and the little girl Masumi Sera is hiding, since they both keep track of his matches, thereby hinting that Shukichi may be the middle brother of the Akai family. Also in Chapter 928, Masumi and Yumi describe their brother and boyfriend respectively very similarly giving a further hint that Shukichi might be the middle brother of the Akai family.

Shukichi's main objective is to prove himself worthy as Yumi's boyfriend by secretly winning all seven shogi titles, despite having technically been dumped by her. He was widely known by the name of Taiko Meijin in the world of shogi even before he finally achieved all seven titles in his most recent Shogi match, due to his unique skill.

Shukichi currently lives in an apartment at Chateau Beika Condo, the same place as when he was still going out with Yumi.

Personality
Shukichi has a very cheerful personality, which Yumi (to her annoyance) perceived as immature. In front of Yumi and other characters, he rarely suppresses his emotions, which can range from overly joyful when meeting his ex-girlfriend, to hilariously disapproving when the latter announces that their relationship was over. Despite this, Shukichi does show a calmer and more serious side during some situations, most notably when he is making his deductions or when he appears in front of the media.

On the other hand, Shukichi is quite confident and proud of his excellent memory, as seen when he proclaims himself the best memorizer in the world. From his goal of achieving all seven shogi titles to win Yumi's admiration, he also shows himself as a person with great patience and determination.

Appearance
Shukichi Haneda is perhaps the most characterized by his hair, which sticks up in the back like a bed head. He is often shown wearing glasses, usually except when he is playing shogi or is being interviewed as a professional shogi player.

Abilitites and Skills
Shogi
Shukichi Haneda has won numerous shogi matches and earned himself the title Meijin, which, along with Ryu-oh, is the most prestigious title in the professional shogi titleholder system. As of File 902, he has attained all seven titles.

Deductive abilities
As a professional shoji player, Shukichi Haneda is very intelligent. He was shown to be able to participate in solving a murder case next to his house, where he effectively figured out the trick behind the victim's suicide note, as well as the culprit's identity.

Memorization
Shukichi is extremely skillful at memorizing, as shown when he managed to remember the code written on Sakurako Yonehara's paper despite having only seen it for a very short amount of time. He also claims to be the best in this field.
Plot overview
Missing Classmate Case (Manga: 506; Anime: 427)
Shukichi was first mentioned by Yumi to the Detective Boys when the children were looking for a missing schoolgirl. She described him as someone with a good-looking face but childish personality. She also mentioned having "dumped him in a bad way".

Yumi's Love Story (Manga: 847-849; Anime: 731-732)
Yumi recalls her moment with Shukichi before they broke up. When she proposed that they should end their relationship as she would become a police officer, Shukichi handed her an envelope and told her not to open until he "collect all seven", referring to the shogi titles. However, he hasn't contacted her ever since then, so she officially broke up with him.

When a murder takes place at his neighboring apartment, Shukichi becomes one of the prime suspects as he knows the code to acquire the spare key. That is when he finally meets his ex-girlfriend again after all those years. He cheerfully introduces to everyone about their relationship, only to be denied by Yumi.

As the investigation progresses, Shukichi perceives the true nature of the victim's suicide note, calling it "a well prepared move", which turns out to be an important clue. Later, when asked about his own alibi, Shukichi refuses to answer, much to Yumi's annoyance. However, he mentally tells her not to be worried, while confidently looking at Conan, who's already figured out the truth about the case.

Conan, with Shukichi's helps, points out that the culprit is the victim's husband. Shukichi explains that the suicide note was actually written four years ago, on an airplane that almost crashed; the culprit used it to fake her death as a suicide. He also reveals that he has suspected the husband since he saw the note, and his theory was confirmed when he overheard his conversation with his son.

At the end of the case, it is revealed that Shukichi is in fact the famous shogi player called "Taiko Meijin", and was having a match when the crime occured. He kept quiet about it so Yumi couldn't find out about his occupation. It's also revealed that the reason he's so determined in winning all seven shogi titles is because when the two were still dating, Yumi used to express her admiration for a sumo champion who had won six tournaments in a row.

Shogi Tournament (Manga: 899-902, Anime: 785-786)
Shukichi won important matches to help him win his 4th, 5th and 6th titles. Before he begins his title match to become only the 2nd Nanakanou (Shogi player with all 7 titles) in history, he receives a letter. He opens the letter only to find out that Yumi was kidnapped and is trapped in a well. The letter contains clues pertaining to the whereabouts of Yumi. He arrives at the location but cannot find the well. Upon the arrival, he bumps into Conan and the Detective Boys who immediately ask the real purpose of Shukichi. The match is postponed as Shukichi attempts to win both the battle of Shogi and love.

A Killer in Ramen Ogura (Manga: 928-930, Anime: Unknown)
Shukichi and Masumi's second-older brother's favorite phrase is the same: I'm skillful at memorizing such things. I'm the best in Japan... No, maybe even the best in the world. Shukichi said the phrase in Episode 731. Sera calls her brother at the same time Yumi calls Shukichi. However, Sera's brother tells her he's talking to someone important and hangs. It turns out Shukichi knows some important facts about the case culprit and became helpful to Yumi and the investigation.

Relationships analysis
Yumi Miyamoto
Shukichi Haneda and Yumi Miyamoto first met when the latter was still in college, and had begun dating since then until Yumi eventually broke up with him. Despite this, it appears they still have feelings for each other. Shukichi doesn't seem to care about the break-up and still thinks of her as his girlfriend, as if nothing has happened. Yumi, on the other hand, clearly shows her concern when she hears that someone from the condo he's living in is dead, and when he refuses to provide his alibi. The fact that they still call the other by their pet names further hints at this. They even exchanged a kiss before he continued his Shogi match to win the seventh title.

So far, Yumi still hasn't found out that Shukichi is actually a famous shogi player (mostly due to her lack of interest to conduct closer inquiries on that part, and an apparent personal disinterest in shogi).

Conan Edogawa
Shukichi seems to have noticed Conan's intelligence and trusted his deductions the first time they met.

Name origin
His full name Shukichi Haneda (羽田 秀𠮷) and the in-story nickname Taiko (太閤) are both references to Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣 秀吉), who was previously named Hashiba Hideyoshi (羽柴 秀吉). Additionally, Haneda's "Hane" (羽) also comes from Yoshiharu Habu (羽生 善治), a real-life professional shogi player who has won all seven titles.

The series was created and is drawn by Gosho Aoyama. The protagonists from his earlier series Magic Kaito look very similar: Kaitou Kid has made a number of appearances as himself in the anime and manga of the series. The main protagonist of the Detective Conan series, Shinichi Kudo, and the protagonist of the Magic Kaito series, Kaito Kuroba are also similar. Hundreds of minor characters have been created and are always given backgrounds, motives, and personalities that put them under suspicion during the investigation.

The English adaption dubbed by Funimation, called Case Closed, has different names than the one in the manga published by Viz Media.

Protagonists
The series revolves around Shinichi Kudo and his "child version", Conan as well as his love interest and best friend Ran and her father Kogoro.

Rei Furuya, also known as Tooru Amuro and Bourbon, is a member of the Black Organization in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. He is a recently dispatched operative who specializes in deduction and intelligence gathering and frequently works with Vermouth. He hates Shuichi Akai and the FBI for some unknown reason. Amuro poses as a private detective who first appeared as a waiter while helping a client with a case, and later becomes a waiter at Café Poirot and Kogoro's apprentice.

Background
Rei's past within the Black Organization is unknown, but it seems he has been tied to them for a while. He knew Shiho Miyano's parents who died when Shiho was young suggesting that he has some involvement since he was a teenager. He was the rival of Shuichi Akai (alias Dai Moroboshi) who was Akemi's lover at the time. He had suspected Dai Moroboshi was a spy for the FBI which turned out to be the case.

Soon after Shuichi Akai's death, Kir called Jodie Starling to report that a new member of the Black Organization called Bourbon had been dispatched. Kir said that Bourbon's target was the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano and that Bourbon has excellent information gathering skills and keen insight. Later Tooru Amuro appears as a free-lance private detective who also maintains employment on the side that may aid in investigation, like his part-time job as a waiter at Ristorante Sundayrino. After his introductory case, Amuro begins working part-time at Café Poirot. He is currently Kogoro's apprentice.

Personality
Rei has a cheerful personality. He is also generous, bringing a plate of sandwiches for the detective agency bought with his money. In more serious situations, he seems to be patient, keeping calm even while others are abusing him. Although somewhat of a "cool type", he does not hide his emotions and is quite expressive. Like other detectives in Detective Conan, he enjoys presenting his deductions about cases to others. Kogoro calls him "effeminate".

Rei has a darker side. He is manipulative, tricking others into performing certain actions so he can gather information. He favors using psychological traps and catching his enemies offguard. Amuro can also be extremely cruel in the pursuit of goals. He planned to run over and hospitalize an elementary school teacher with his car in order to lure out FBI agents, and he would have allowed a suspect destroy his exonerating evidence in order to test Kogoro. Rei alternates between going out of his way to care about the wellbeing others and ignoring them when it is inconvenient. As Scar Akai, he saved Conan at the Teito bank heist, but neglected to inform Ran and Kogoro later when he noticed that Conan might have been kidnapped by a murderer in Detectives' Nocturne.

Gin says Bourbon has a secretive personality like Vermouth, and that no one can ever guess what he's up to or what he will do. Vodka says that Bourbon hates Shuichi Akai even more than Gin does, although a reason for this hatred is not given. Bourbon believes he is the only person capable of killing Akai. Gin said that if Bourbon found out Akai was alive, he would surely boast that his suspicion was correct. Gin and Bourbon probably don't get along and they don't seem to communicate with one another. <!--It is also seen that Rei has taken a serious interest in young Conan for reasons unknown, since there is no evidence that leads to him knowing Conan's real identity. However, it can be inferred that Rei is beginning to unravel the mystery behind the "Sleeping Kogoro".-->

Appearance
He has dark skin, lighter than, but closer to Heiji's color and has dyed blond hair. He wears glasses at first, but it is unknown if he actually needs them because he was using them to conceal his identity at the time and takes them off midway through the case and has not had them on since. Unlike other Black Organization members, he dresses mostly casually and sometimes wears outfits with only a little black. This may be because he is undercover and is trying to blend in.

Abilities
Deduction and intelligence
Rei is a good detective with excellent information gathering skills. Although, since Amuro is undercover as Kogoro's apprentice, he hasn't shown his real deduction skills, which is his specialty in the Black Organization. His friend, Wataru Date, said Amuro was the smartest student at the police academy.

Driving
Rei is a capable driver, capable of precisely swinging his car in front of another during a high speed car chase in order to stop it with a controlled collision.

Tennis
Rei is an excellent tennis player.
First aid
When Conan received a concussion from an errant tennis racket, Rei "carried out the procedures pretty efficiently" before the doctor even arrived.
Lockpicking
Rei seems to carry lockpicks with him and was able to lockpick a door fairly quickly. He claimed he learned it from a friend in a security company. Japan's law prohibits possession of any lock picking tools and carries a penalty of one year imprisonment or a 500,000 yen fine. he received the boss's permission to verify Akai's death.
Currently, Bourbon thinks Shiho has been killed, and had come to believe Akai was dead as well until a suspicious man shrouded by smoke threw a grenade by him on the Mystery Express. The sighting caused Bourbon to second guess himself and request that Vermouth show him the detailed files from before and after Akai's death again. Bourbon has also decided to continue as Kogoro's apprentice because he noticed Conan is the real brains behind "Sleeping Kogoro" and is curious.
On the move (Manga: 622, Anime: 509)
CIA infiltrator Kir manages to sneak away from the people watching her and report to Jodie Starling that a newly activated member called Bourbon has been dispatched to look for Sherry and that he is very good at deduction and intelligence gathering. Jodie passes this information onto Conan. After hearing that Bourbon is on the move, Conan looks concerned, but doesn't tell Haibara about him.
Before Bourbon appeared as Tooru Amuro, he disguised as Akai with a large burn with Vermouth's help. In this disguise, he approached the close friends of Shuichi Akai to gauge whether he was truly dead. Bourbon first used the disguise to approach Jodie Starling at Teito Bank, then Andre Camel at Beika Department Store, he also sends Kogoro a text message on his deduction of the current case using a borrowed phone from a bystander. Whether he did this out of concern for the hostages or his own well being is unknown.
Amuro's Introduction (Manga: 793-795, Anime: 667-668)
Rei (under the alias Tooru Amuro) is hired by to-be-bride Hatsune Kamon to investigate whether her to-be-husband, Raita Banba, is cheating on her. As part of the investigation, Amuro tells Kamon to have their pre-wedding celebration at the restaurant, Ristorante Sundayrino, where he works as a waiter. He purposefully drops some cake on Banba's pants trying to make Banba too embarrassed to approach women later. Banba complains about Amuro's "mistake", but Kamon tells Amuro it's alright to protect him. -->Banba goes to the bathroom to meet the person who called him, the detective Sanji Haruka, who Banba hired to find out if Kamon was cheating on him. Sanji had been following the wife and discovered her meeting with Amuro, so Sanji mistakenly reports Kamon is having an affair with Amuro. Sanji confirms Amuro has a matching voice by asking Amuro to repeat his order, a bourbon on the rocks.

Banba is furious at Amuro and begins to harass him; like shouldering him and knocking Amuro over in front of the other waiters. Later Kamon dies in a car fire that is ruled an arson, and Banba accuses Amuro of starting it because he is Kamon's lover. Amuro denies this and says that Banba may have been trying to disguise wounds he received while fighting with Kamon by tripping Amuro. Amuro then takes off his glasses and reveals himself to be a private detective hired by Kamon, not her lover.

After Amuro correctly gives his deduction that Sanji was a detective hired by Banba, Kogoro accuses Amuro of driving Kamon to suicide by telling her about her husband's shameless flirting, but Amuro denies contacting Kamon by phone. Amuro accuses Banba of being the murderer, which antagonizes Banba into to rushing him. Amuro dodges and trips Banba and asks Kogoro to hold Banba's legs. From the condition of the bottom of Banba's shoes and Amuro's detailed background investigation of Banba and Kamon, Conan is able to deduce that Kamon's death was really a suicide. Amuro continues to accuse Banba after more DNA evidence comes in, but Conan prevents his arrest by using Sleeping Kogoro to ask Banba a critical question that reveals he never stepped outside. Amuro challenges Kogoro's deduction, suggesting that maybe Banba used a knit cap and long windbreaker to disguise himself, but Sleeping Kogoro counters by pointing out the condition of Banba's shoes. Defeated, Amuro demands Kogoro explain the matching DNA, which he does, revealing that Kamon and Banba are identical twins, but Kamon had a chromosomal abnormality that resulted in her being phenotypically female. Humbled, Amuro explains the abnormality condition to those present which Inspector Megure confirms.

One day later, Amuro has started work as a waiter at Café Poirot below Mouri Detective Agency. He asks Kogoro if he can be Kogoro's apprentice and whispers some unheard amount of money per case that he is will pay if Kogoro brings Amuro along with him. The amount thrills Kogoro into accepting Amuro's offer immediately. Conan mentally moans about how yet another bothersome person has appeared.

While Kogoro and the gang are watching a news report on a recent bank robbery, Amuro stops by with sandwiches from the Poirot after finishing his part time job for the day. After commenting on the robbery, Amuro reveals that he wants the scoop on Kogoro's newest case request after deducing from Kogoro's appearance and habits that Kogoro had a case. Kogoro gets a text from the client requesting that Kogoro switch the meeting location to the Café Columbo, and Amuro goes with them after changing out of his work clothes. At the Columbo, Kogoro explains to Amuro the request was to find the locker a key belongs to. The client fails to show, so Amuro, Kogoro, Conan, and Ran go back to the Detective Agency to make sure the client didn't actually turn up there instead. When Amuro arrives at the agency, he and Conan notice someone had broken in and appeared to have intercepted the client while they were out. Stepping outside, Amuro explains his deductions to the rest of the gang and that the culprit is hiding in the restroom. Before Amuro can open the bathroom door, a gunshot rings out, and Conan rushes in to find a dead man who apparently committed suicide with a gun and a taped-up crying woman. The woman's story is that the now-dead guy was interrogating her about the key and locker and committed suicide when Kogoro returned early, but Amuro and Conan suspect she is lying and may have murdered the man.

Amuro questions the woman a little, and Megure comments to Kogoro about he has yet another detective hanging around him. Curious, Amuro asks about the other detective and hears she is a young girl. Amuro offers to drive the formerly tied up woman to her home after questioning was postponed until the next day. Conan, Ran and Kogoro come along for the ride. At the woman's house, Conan, Amuro, and Kogoro announce they need to use the restroom and go inside. Ran turns on her cellphone and immediately gets a call from Sera, who was worried after seeing the news of the murder. The call is full of static, and Amuro suddenly shuts Ran's phone and announces the place is bugged, which is interfering with the cellphone signal. Amuro gets out a bug detector and begins sweeping the house.
Ran, Amuro, and Kogoro find several bugs before coming across a large suitcase under a bed that is emitting a horrible smell. They opened the bugged suitcase and find a corpse inside.

Soon afterwards, it was revealed that the culprit was indeed the woman, who sent Kogoro a message claiming that she was having Conan in her hands. During the investigation, they have found out a video recording summary, which contains many news about the robbery, inside the TV. Amuro then quickly gave out the speculation that the apartment might actually belonged to one of the robbers instead. Ran didn't understand how a detective of such level of intelligence could willingly become her father's apprentice. However, Amuro modestly answered that Kogoro was just testing him, and that he still had got much to learn.

Later, they decided to check up the house's computer, which was protected with password. Amuro discovered that the password was hidden under the desk, but instead of revealing the fact directly, he chose to hint Kogoro and Ran about it. After having gained access to the computer,
they have all found out the identity of the third robber and her location, where Conan's kidnapper would most likely pay a visit. They followed the address and drive to that place, Sera approached them closely from behind. However, while still on the road, they suddenly learned that the third robber had been overwhelming both Conan and the killer, and they were in serious danger. Right after determining the exact car that those three were in, Amuro purposely crashed his own car into theirs in order to stop it. In the end, the robber was defeated by Sera, Conan was safe. Amuro, Sera, Okiya (who was driving Agasa and Haibara to the scene) were all shown to receive a mysterious call. Vermouth called Bourbon and commented that he had gained some trust and that she expected him to keep his (unstated) promise to her.
Conan and the Detective Boys encounter Amuro who was coming from the police station due to the event of the "Online Client" case. Because he had crashed his car into the car of the woman who kidnapped Conan, he was called to come there and finish some procedures so the police could determine whether his action had been overkill. He expresses his disappointment at not being able to meet Professor Agasa with them. He also states that he had another purpose for coming to the station, but when asked by Conan what it is, Amuro claims that it "has already disappeared".

Later, when Takagi is still trapped, he reminisces of a time with his mentor Wataru Date and he said that Date was the top student at the police academy. However, Date rebutted this and told Takagi that he had always been number 2. He also said that neither his brains nor his brawn was anything compared to that guy who was like a gentleman. Later, it's revealed that the person whom Date was talking about is Amuro. He leaves a toothpick by Date's grave and watches Takagi and Sato pay their respects. Ran and Kogoro are being served by Amuro at the Poirot. Presumably in reponse to being asked about Conan's absence, Kogoro tells Amuro that Conan and the Detective Boys went camping in Gunma, and they will be sending pictures to Kogoro's computer later. When Sera calls Ran to ask about what sort of vehicle Agasa drives, Amuro listens suspiciously. Late that night, Amuro furtively sneaks into the empty Mouri Detective Agency and logs onto Kogoro's website using the password Kogoro inadvertently told him in an earlier case. Instead of pictures from the Detective Boys' camping trip that he was expecting, he sees a video sent by someone (Mitsuhiko) that shows Shiho Miyano rescuing Ayumi from a cabin fire. He is shocked, and then he zooms in on her hand and notices she is wearing a pass ring for the Bell Tree Express mystery train. Amuro then notices that Kogoro's computer was being hacked by someone and wonders who did it. Amuro passes over the information that Shiho appeared in Gunma and will be boarding the mystery train to Vermouth who will relay it to Gin.

Amuro appears on the train where he runs into Ran and the others. When asked what he is doing there, Amuro claims he won his tickets in an online auction and that he coincidentally met Kogoro in the dining cart where he learned of the case. When Masumi Sera runs off to find Scar Akai (Vermouth), Amuro is seen with his phone out contacting Vermouth that she was heading her way. He then comes when Conan (through Kogoro) starts his deduction on the murder culprit and reveals that three mirror plates were stuffed in a painting which was used for the locked room murder trick.

However, after the culprit confesses, Vermouth activated smoke canisters throughout the train in order to lure Ai Haibara (who supposedly transformed back to Shiho Miyano) out. After that is successful, Amuro introduces himself to her by calling himself Bourbon. He goes on to ask Shiho if she knows who he is to which she claims that he was a rival to her sister's love Dai Moroboshi (Shuichi Akai). Amuro starts to gloat saying that he knew Akai was FBI and that he couldn't believe that he was killed. He then says he decided to disguise as Akai in front of those close to him, although he asked Vermouth to disguise as him on the train. From that, he could only conclude that Akai really died. Putting Shiho at gunpoint, he tells her to go into the eighth cart so he can detach it with C4 explosives and bring her back to the organization. However, Shiho reveals that there are more C4 explosives in the train, when Amuro realizes that Vermouth put them there and that she plans to have Sherry killed. However, before he can do anything else, the real Akai (whom Amuro mistook as Vermouth) comes behind him and throws a grenade to detach the eighth cart. Amuro dodges the explosive relatively unscathed and the eighth cart explodes, but Shiho (who was really Kaitou Kid in disguise) is able to escape. Amuro then regroups with Vermouth and asks her to give him the files on before and after Akai's death. He thinks to himself that he'll have to start from square one, while Okiya, who is revealed to be Shuichi Akai watches on silently.
However, to Conan's horror, Amuro had asked Kogoro if he and Sonoko wanted tennis lessons. He meets them at a tennis court and reveals he will be coming back to work at the Poirot next week. When a tennis racket accidentally slips from a player's hand, Amuro tries to warn Conan that it will hit him, but Conan is unable to dodge it in time. Conan is knocked unconscious, and Amuro rushes over and does everything to make sure Conan is assisted medically before a real doctor arrives to check Conan's condition. When Conan awakens, he finds out he was moved to the house of the person who hit him with the racket. After an apology, the group asks if Amuro, Sonoko, and the Mouris would like to play doubles tennis with them. Conan goes off to take a nap, but a loud noise wakes him up, and he discovers one of the players has been murdered and the body is locked in the room with him. Worried about the noise, Amuro picks the room's lock and tries to open the door, but Conan yells at him to stop as there is a beaten body next to it. When the police come to investigate, Amuro helps in the investigation. As Conan prepares to tranquilize Kogoro, Amuro, starting to get suspicious, bends down to examine Conan aiming his watch, which prevents Conan from using it. Conan is instead forced to give out hints to lead Kogoro and the police to the right answer. After the case is over, Amuro and Vermouth have a phone conversation. Vermouth asks why Amuro is still sticking around the Mouri Detective Agency when there is no need to because Sherry has been dealt with, and Amuro responds that he is interested by Sleeping Kogoro. Unable to call for help and out of other options, Conan decides to try to get a message to Amuro using the cat and a doctored receipt. The receipt initially blew away, but after realizing it was from Conan, Amuro tracks it down using a specialized app on his phone that can simulate wind conditions between the buildings in Beika city. Amuro locates the delivery truck in his repaired Mazda RX-7. The Black Organization agent decides to pretend like he came by chance instead of decoding the message on the receipt, and asks the two delivery men to make way because the street is narrow. When the kids see him and cry for help, Amuro, playing dumb, asks why they are in that truck. One of the murderers then orders Amuro to get in the truck by threatening the safety of the children. Amuro immediately punches the man's chest so hard that he coughs up blood. The remaining kidnapper backs down and Amuro ties him up and tells Conan to call the police. The children then reveal that they are outside of Agasa's house, which Amuro takes interest in. ===A Shrine to Remember (Manga: 850-852, Anime: 734)===
Suspecting that they may hold more valuable information for his investigation, Amuro follows Conan and Jodie to a sakura viewing scenic spot and attempts to approach them using someone else's appearance. He, with Vermouth's assistance, impersonates a random man named Touhei Benzaki, after having knocked him unconscious. Unknowing to Amuro, the real Benzaki has just been pickpocketed by a female thief.

In front of Conan and Jodie, Amuro claims to be the husband of the woman who taped Jodie back in the bank robbery case, where he was also one of the victims himself. He also says that he saw Scar Akai a few days back, to which both of them react strongly. Jodie immediately grabs Amuro's arm and questions him where did that happen, while he takes advantage of the chance and secretly plants an eavesdropping device inside the sleeve of her jacket. Suddenly, the female thief approaches them in an attempt to steal Jodie's money. She recognizes Benzaki's face and worries that he may figure out about her action, but Amuro pays no further attention to her. After that, he declares not remembering the place that he saw Scar Akai due to his cold; and during a conversation with Jodie, Amuro learns that Shuichi Akai likes drinking canned coffee and has dropped one back when the Organization was trying to attack Haido Central Hospital. Jodie also implies that she knows Scar Akai and the real Akai are not the same person. She hands to Amuro her phone number and asks him to contact her if he happens to recall anything.
Later, the female thief is murdered by one of her victims and Amuro (as Touhei Benzaki) unwillingly becomes one of the suspects. Through the eavesdropping device planted earlier, Amuro is able to listen to Jodie's conversations with Conan, where she mentions how Conan assisted the FBI in unmasking Rikumichi Kusuda as the spy from the Organization using his cellphone.

After the case is closed and the culprit gets arrested, Conan expresses his surprise at Benzaki not being able to recognize the thief the second time he met her, and wonders if he has bad eyesight. Amuro awkwardly evades the question by saying that he was there to buy a good-luck charm and not to see the flowers. Much to his luck, Vermouth, imitating the appearance of the woman who taped Jodie, walks towards them and answers that the good luck charm was for their baby. She pretends to have a morning sickness in order to remove the eavesdropping device from Jodie and create an excuse for Amuro to leave the crime scene immediately. Amuro then returns the stolen purse to the real Benzaki and drives Vermouth away.

Inside the car, Amuro and Vermouth discuss about the case a little. She wonders whether he has got hold of something interesting from Jodie. Amuro states that he has learned a "surprising inside story", but won't share the details with Vermouth until he's got the proof. clear

Hints that Tooru Amuro was Bourbon
* The character Tooru Amuro is named after, Amuro Ray, is the mortal enemy of the character Shuichi Akai is named after, Char Aznable.
* He is a detective and very skilled at information gathering.
* He is male as the codename Bourbon implies. The Black Organization codename pattern is that hard liquors are used for men's codenames, and Kir used a male specific pronoun to refer to Bourbon in the Department Store Bomber Case.
* He has a type of personality Gin would not like. Gin thinks Bourbon is irritating.
* When Amuro offers Kogoro an unknown "tuition" per case Kogoro brings him on, the amount he offers is enough to get Kogoro excited and accept Amuro as an apprentice without hesitation. This is strange because Amuro would not be expected to have much money because he is young, lacks a formal agency, and works part time at restaurants in one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in.
* Unlike other detectives so far, Amuro is a calculating type who chose avoidable courses of action (or non-action) that may have resulted in harm to others if things had gone slightly differently. In his introductory case, Amuro doesn't intervene when a suspect he knows to be innocent is half a step from destroying his exonerating evidence because it seems Amuro was testing Kogoro. Later, Amuro noticed that Conan was alone with a murderer and considered that Conan might have been kidnapped, yet said nothing about it until others realized Conan and the murder suspect were gone.
* The timing of Bourbon's report to Vermouth about Shiho's appearance at Gunma suggested Amuro was Bourbon. The other two Bourbon suspects, Okiya and Sera, both had seen Haibara and were suspicious of her long before Bourbon reported Shiho to Vermouth, but the video from Gunma was the first time Amuro had seen an image of Shiho or Haibara. Okiya had met Haibara in person in his first appearance case and multiple times afterward. Sera had obtained a picture of Haibara via a reflection from Agasa's glasses in the Ayumi kidnapping case. Both of them should have reported to Vermouth if they were Bourbon soon after their respective encounters.
*He completely cut off communication with his close friend Wataru Date. A complete cutoff would not be necessary if Amuro worked for a "normal" organization like the Tokyo Metropolitan Police District. It is more sensible that Amuro was trying to protect Date from any potential dangers associated with infiltrating the Black Organization as a member of the Japanese Secret Police.
* Amuro kept a bug detector with him - only Organization members have been shown to do this, while normal detectives like Conan do not.
<!--*In the train, when the smoke grenade is activated, Amuro look inside the room and says "Fire" despite the smoke came from smoke grenade. It is not so difficult for a guy with his intellect to distinguish between smoke that came from fire and smoke which came from a smoke grenade. So, he certainly have a specific reason to lie.-->
* Also, through the process of elimination, it can be seen that Amuro is actually Bourbon out of the three suspects. Masumi Sera, Shuichi's sister, can be seen as to not be Bourbon, as she looks like Shuichi Akai, and seems to think he is dead, so it can be concluded that she was not Bourbon. Also, Subaru Okiya is not Bourbon, as Conan, who is normally a very careful person, invites him to stay as his Shinichi's home. If Subaru was someone that Conan did not know, it would be very unlikely that Conan would let him live in the Kudo's house and near Haibara (Sherry).
* In 793, the first case in which appears Amuro, the detective Sanji Haruoka order to the waiter (Amuro himself) to bring him the Bourbon with ice.

Hints that Scar Akai was Tooru Amuro/Bourbon
:For the former theory, please see Scar Akai is Bourbon Theory<br />
While Scar Akai was played by Vermouth during the last appearance on the train, Bourbon had been Scar Akai during the three earlier appearances at Teito Bank, Beika Department Store, and outside Mouri Detective Agency. The evidence that Amuro being Scar Akai these times was:
* In Scar Akai's appearance at the Beika Dept. Store, Amuro was the only known Black Organization operative not seen at the same time time as Scar Akai. Gin began discussing Bourbon with Kir after seeing this Scar Akai. <!--This also exclude that Vermouth from being Scar Akai at the time, which means there is more than one Scar Akai.-->
* Amuro was absent from his job at the Poirot when Scar Akai appeared outside the detective agency where Sera was walking with Ran. This also notable because this occurred right after Sera and Amuro met and Amuro found out Sera was friends with Ran.
* In Scar Akai's appearances at the Teito Bank case, the Beika Dept Store, and outside Mouri Detective Agency, he never spoke in front of anyone who would know Akai's real voice, suggesting that this Scar Akai could not imitate voices like Vermouth.
* Amuro is right-handed like Scar Akai.
* He has the right body size, face shape, and height to disguise as Scar Akai.
* He has an interest in the Mouri Detective Agency which makes sense because Scar Akai saw fit to keep Kogoro's cellphone number with him.
* Amuro's hypothetical disguise suggestion in 795, a knit cap and long windbreaker, are articles of clothing Shuichi Akai and Scar Akai wear respectively.

Relationships analysis
Family & Friends
Wataru Date
Wataru Date and Rei Furuya were friends in the police academy; Rei was the top ranked student, while Date held second place. While Date went on to become an officer, Amuro went somewhere else and fell out of contact with Date for unknown reasons. Date's last text to Amuro asked him where he was and chided Rei to communicate once in a while. Rei was shown visiting Date's grave, and likely left a toothpick out of respect for Date; Date used them habitually.

Conan Edogawa
Rei seems to respect Conan's intelligence and also seems to look out for Conan as well. He wound up protecting Conan while disguised as Scar Akai at the Teito Bank, and as Rei helped Conan get out of a kidnapping situation and doctored him when Conan took a racket to the head. Before knowing he was Bourbon, Conan was generally friendly towards Rei. After the events of the Bell Tree Express, dealing with Rei hanging around has become awkward for Conan especially because he worries for Ran's safety around a member of the Black Organization.

Although his mission concerning Sherry is over, Rei has decided to investigate Conan. Rei seems to know that Conan is using Mouri Kogoro as a puppet for his deductions. He also overheard a conversation between Jodie and Conan about how Conan helped the FBI fight the Black Organization while Kir was at Haido Central Hospital.

Kogoro Mouri
Rei tends to act ingratiating whenever Kogoro Mouri is around, and is especially fawning over his "Mouri-sensei". Kogoro is alternatively flattered by Rei's praise and annoyed with his effusive personality. Overall Kogoro tends to treat Rei flippantly despite being paid a handsome sum for the apprenticeship. When among members of the Black Organization, Rei doesn't speak too badly of Kogoro despite Kogoro's obvious incompetence. Rei is becoming more skilled at herding Kogoro through cases without having the older man realize that Amuro is a far superior detective and is manipulating him for information.

Black Organization
Shuichi Akai
Bourbon despises Shuichi Akai for some unknown reason and believes he is the only one capable of killing him. In file 897, it's strongly hinted that Rei hates Akai because of some event involving a certain "he" whom Rei knows; however, no further clarification is made.<!-- PLEASE DO NOT ADD ANY SPECULATION ON WHO THE PERSON MIGHT BE, without canonical confirmation! The file neither mentioned a "friend" nor a "death", it could be anyone, in any sort of bad situation (which didn't necessarily have anything to do with Akai/FBI). --> Later, they makes an alliance because they have the same targets.

Vermouth
Vermouth and Bourbon keep close contact with one another, and seem to be closer to one another than, say, Bourbon and Gin. Bourbon specializes in intelligence gathering, so he likely belongs to the same reconnaissance division of the Black Organization as Vermouth. While it is still uncertain whether Bourbon is working directly under Vermouth, she seems to keep track of his actions during his missions at times, and he also often informs her about his discoveries or his future plans. Vermouth helped Bourbon create a disguise that looked like Akai so he can investigate his enemy's death. Later, she somehow helped him approach Kogoro because he suspected that the detective was in contact with Sherry. Bourbon made an unknown promise to Vermouth (possibly being to not harm Conan), and she calls to ask him if he will be upholding it after the car chase in Detectives' Nocturne. <!-- In File 894, Bourbon is shown to be aware of Vermouth's affections towards Conan. -->

Elena Miyano
Rei was probably close with Elena Miyano as a child before she died. Elena would doctor Rei after he got into fights.

Gin
Gin dislikes Bourbon's personality and finds him annoying for being secretive and always doing what he pleases. At the same time, Gin respects Bourbon's detective abilities. The two do not seem to be in contact with one another, as Gin has no idea what Bourbon is doing.

Akemi Miyano
Akemi Miyano and Rei seem to have met at some point because Akemi told Shiho that Bourbon has a rivalry with Akai. <!--DO NOT SAY AMURO AND AKEMI HAVE HAD SOME RELATIONSHIP UNTIL SOMETHING OF THAT NATURE IS MENTIONED IN THE MANGA. The reference in 824 is worded in such a way as to make it unclear how Akemi and Amuro knew each other, and does NOT imply that the rivalry between Akai and Rei is over Akemi. While many people theorize that they have had a relationship and that it is the cause of the rivalry, right now it is a speculation with very little evidence. Speculations about Akemi and Rei having a relationship should be in a speculation section, or at least marked as "some fans speculate that". -->

Shiho Miyano
Rei doesn't seem to have any hostility towards Shiho unlike other Black Organization members. He attempted to capture the person he thought was her alive instead of trying to kill her, regretting he might have to resort to violence to do so. Rei says he had met Elena and Atsushi Miyano while they were alive. Rei does not know Shiho is Ai. During a car chase in Detectives' Nocturne‎, Shiho gets a strong feeling that member of the Black Organization was behind her, but she doesn't seem to pinpoint it to Rei's pursuing Mazda FD RX-7.

Others
Masumi Sera
Rei first meets Sera when Conan gets kidnapped. After both of them save Conan, he becomes very surprised to see her and wonders why is she here. Next day, he does not have any work. Rei sees Sera again after the previous case, and notices that she looks similiar to Shuichi Akai. To confirm his theory, Rei once again disguised himself as Scar Akai to gauge her reaction. Suddenly, Sera sees him in the crowd ahead and just like Jodie and Camel before her, Sera becomes just as shocked by his appearance. She runs after him, but he disappears before she can catch him. Ran wonders who Sera was chasing, but Sera replies she thought it was someone she knew. Sera silently appends in her mind that it would be impossible for the man she was chasing to be the person she thinks it was. While Rei watches her from a little ahead, confirming his suspicion that Sera is related to Akai.

Speculation
Gin has revealed that Bourbon is as secretive as Vermouth. Bourbon has shown a friendly relationship with Vermouth but not with other members so far. Bourbon even hid some details from Conan. It is possible that Bourbon, as well as Kir, is a member who doesn´t like the Organization. Date himself revealed that Bourbon was the best man at the police academy, and that Bourbon was a gentleman like Takagi, too. Besides, at the end of Takagi´s Kidnapping Case, Bourbon refers to Date as "my friend", which means he had no option but to cut all means of contact with him for his own safety.

Name origin
Tooru Amuro has a Mobile Suit Gundam inspired name. He is named after the main protagonist Amuro Ray, and Amuro's voice actor Touru Furuya. Amuro is also played by Furuya in the animated series. His real name, Rei Furuya, shares the same source.
Trivia
* Rei is a right-handed person.
* During an 2010 interview with Shuichi Ikeda, Gosho Aoyama said it would be interesting if a character from the Black Organization was named after Amuro Ray because Shuichi Akai was named after Char Aznable.
*Rei owns a white RX-7, the same car as Miwako Sato. The RX-7 is a reference to the white Gundam that the Mobile Suit Gundam character Amuro Ray piloted, the RX-78-2.
* Technically, Rei's first appearence in the anime was in the new opening theme song during the Kaitou Kid special in August 2012.
