== Background ==

Hidemi Hondou is an undercover [[CIA]] agent who has managed to infiltrate the [[Black Organization]] under the codename Kir. She has a younger brother named [[Eisuke Hondou|Eisuke]]. She was forced to kill her father, Ethan Hondou, who was also in the CIA, after a mistake nearly caused her to lose her cover in the organization.

[[Conan]] first encountered Hidemi as a newscaster under the alias Rena Mizunashi when she asked [[Kogoro Mouri]] to solve a trivial stalking case. Due to an accident, Conan later discovered she was a codenamed Black Organization agent and a leading participant in an assassination plot. While foiling the plot with the aid of [[Jodie Starling]] and the [[FBI]], Hidemi suffered an accident and fell into a coma, whereupon she was secretly interred in a hospital secretly. The Black Organization and her younger brother Eisuke began looking for her. Later, the FBI and Conan discovered her true allegiance to the CIA and tricked the Organization into recapturing her so she could continue her infiltration mission.

== Personality ==
Despite having to maintain her cover within the Black Organization, Hidemi remains a compassionate person and attempts to preserve as many lives as she can. Having seen him in action, she has come to trust Conan and his judgment implicitly. Among the members of the Organization though, she appears to be cold and obedient to her superiors, but she acts a bit more merciful than the others, causing Gin to get suspicious of her at times.

Hidemi first met Conan in her newscaster identity. For some time Rena had been stalked at her own housedoor, with sleeping pills left regularly on her doorstep. Rena's friend [[Yoko Okino|Yoko]] decided to call in [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]], who came of course in [[Ran Mouri|Ran's]] and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan's]] company. In order to track down the culprit, Conan pasted a bug next to her door. Eventually, the stalker turned out to be a young boy. The reason for his leaving pills was that his late mother ostensibly resembled Hidemi, and in order to see her more regularly on TV, he had deposited the pills so she could have more restful sleeps. Facing these facts, Rena gently encouraged the boy to get over his mother's death and start his own life now. Shortly after Conan and the others left, Rena also departed, but in the process Conan's bug fell off and accidentally got stuck to the sole of her shoe. Right afterwards, to Conan's immense shock, Rena made a call to no other than [[Gin]], who directed her to the attempted assassination of a popular politician; under the guise of a TV interview, Rena was to guide him to a place where he could be easily dispatched.

Conan of course decided to intervene, and he, [[Hiroshi Agasa|Professor Agasa]] and [[Ai Haibara|Ai]] took up the pursuit, during which they also met [[Jodie Starling]] who tagged along as well. They just barely managed to thwart the assassination, but the Organization decided to execute a backup plan, with Rena pursuing their target on a motorbike. When the FBI attempted to apprehend her, an accident ensued in which Rena was critically injured and fell into a coma. She was delivered into the Haido Central Hospital and kept under constant guard of the FBI.

In time it turned out that Eisuke was in fact Rena's/Hidemi's younger brother, who had been looking for her after she had inexplicably disappeared. She was in fact an agent of the CIA who had taken [[Ethan Hondou|her father's place]] as a mole in the Organization following a blunder on her part, which had forced her father to sacrifice himself to save his daughter and maintain her cover.

Gin is suspicious of how ineffective the FBI's plan was and that [[Akai]] didn't make a strong move. Gin thinks Akai is still hiding something and that doubt is relayed to the boss who plans a test of Kir's loyalty. Meanwhile, Andre Camel becomes a suspect in a coincidental murder case. The Black Organization hears about it, and taking advantage of the FBI's distraction, Gin orders Kir to call Akai out to meet with her and kill him to regain the boss' trust. Kir meets with Akai at Raiha Pass and apparently kills him, although there is the possibility that [[Akai faked his death theory|Akai and Kir conspired to fake Akai's death]].

== Background ==
Kogoro is a private investigator,<ref>[[Volume 1#File 001 - The Heisei Holmes|Volume 1, File 1: "The Heisei Holmes"]]</ref> but he prefers to laze around all day. Kogoro attended Teitan High School, the same high school as [[Ran Mouri]] and [[Shinichi Kudo]], along with [[Eri Kisaki]], [[Yukiko Kudo|Yukiko Fujimine]], and the actress Ruri Ujo.<ref>[[Volume 37]]</ref> He then graduated from Beika University, where he was the ace of the Judo team, though he was highly vulnerable to stage fright.<ref>[[Volume 9#File 086 - The Two Benkei Standing Deaths|Volume 9, File 86: "The Two Benkei Standing Deaths"]]</ref>

Some time after graduating, Kogoro became a police officer. He worked in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One under [[Inspector Megure]], but he did poorly at his job. He also worked for some time under [[Inspector Yuminaga]] in the arson division as well. While Movie 2 strongly suggests that Kogoro left the police force because of the incident where he shot at Eri Kisaki who was held as a hostage, his reasons for leaving the force have not been confirmed in the manga. Kogoro is an excellent marksman.<ref name="m2">[[The Fourteenth Target|Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target]]</ref>

Kogoro's daughter, [[Ran Mouri]], is also the daughter of [[Eri Kisaki]], who is now living separately after an argument ten years prior.<ref name="m2" /> Despite constantly feigning disinterest in her, Kogoro still has feelings for his wife—he has even asked her to move back in with him, but she pretends not to hear him because she is not "ready" yet,<ref>[[Volume 17]]</ref> though she still has feelings for him as well. These are expressed mainly through jealousy when Kogoro's attention is caught by other attractive women in the vicinity.

After [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] had been shrunk by an accidental effect of [[APTX 4869|a mysterious poison]] and was forced to adopt the identity of [[Conan Edogawa]], [[Hiroshi Agasa]] concluded that Shinichi couldn't openly continue any investigation without attracting undue attention by the [[Black Organization]]. To maintain his cover, he suggested Shinichi to move in with Kogoro and use him as a front. When Kogoro's conclusions during one of their first investigations became so dilettantish that the cause became hopeless, Conan used his soccer skills to kick an ashtray to knock him out. Kogoro unconsciously (and conveniently) adopted a reclining pose, and Conan used his [[Voice-Changing Bowtie|Voice Changer]], imitating Kogoro's voice, to present his conclusions and the identity of the true murderer; this earned Kogoro the title "Sleeping Kogoro" and the reputation as a master detective. Kogoro can easily become infatuated with beautiful women. His dream woman is pop idol [[Yoko Okino]], and he never misses (or tries not to miss) her television shows.<ref>[[Volume 3#File 025 - The Dream That Will Not Come True|Volume 3, File 25: "The Dream That Will Not Come True"]]</ref><ref>Such behaviors can be seen consistently from [[Volume 1#File 006 - From Third-Rate to Great Detective|Volume 1, File 6]] to [[Volume 52#File 541 - Sonoko's Red Handkerchief|Volume 52, File 541]].</ref> Because of his behavior around attractive women, he often embarrasses his daughter [[Ran Mouri]], and while it is not the reason why his wife left him, it is the reason why she hasn't come back.

While he is never outright called an alcoholic, Kogoro has a tendency to get intoxicated at social events, and [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi/Conan]] makes sarcastic remarks about him spending money on alcohol. In the anime, his office is littered with empty beer cans,<ref>[[Volume 1#File 002 - The Great Detective Turned Small|Volume 1, File 2: "The Great Detective Turned Small"]]</ref> and he keeps a well-stocked liquor shelf. Kogoro is also a heavy smoker, and is usually seen with a cigarette in his mouth. His hobbies include mahjong and gambling on horse racing and [[wikipedia:keirin|keirin]].

In the Japanese version, due to his name Kogoro Mouri he is often mistaken for the famous astronaut [[wikipedia:Mamoru Mohri|Mamoru Mohri]] when he introduces himself, because they both are in the news frequently, of Japanese decent, and have the same last name. In the English version when Kogoro introduces himself he is often mistaken for "oh, that famous astronaut," as well. In the English version it is possible he is also confused with Patrick Moore.

In the US version, Kogoro Mouri says that he is forty-three, in opposed to being thirty-seven in the Japanese version. It is unknown if Eri's age remains the same since they had attended school together, and if not, if it will affect the ''Princess Pageant'' storyline that occurred twenty years ago, making her in her twenties when she participated instead of a teenager.

Kogoro suffers from a mild acrophobia (fear of heights) and is quite uncomfortable in high settings, such as skyscrapers, when he has the chance to see how high up he is. It has also been made clear that Kogoro is an expert with a handgun, being able to hit targets at great distance with an impressive level of accuracy. He is also known for his Judo throw, which he often uses to incapacitate escaping suspects. As for leisure activities, unless he drinks to excess or goes hunting for any recordings of his favorite idol star, [[Yoko Okino]], he enjoys betting on horse races, mahjong and baseball (he even plays in his neighborhood's team).

Throughout most of the series, Kogoro is depicted as a pretty incompetent detective, often missing obvious clues and jumping to the wrong conclusions, though several of these conclusions were shared by other people on the scene. However, Kogoro does follow the proper police procedures, asks questions, and (with a little help from Conan) follows leads quite well. Despite his ineptness, he had been a prominent police officer under [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Juzo Megure]] ten years prior to the start of the series<ref name="m2" /> He is shown to have left the police force after events addressed in the second movie, ''[[The Fourteenth Target]]''.<ref name="m2" />

Thanks to Conan's undercover help in solving numerous cases, Kogoro's reputation as a detective grows quickly.<ref>He first rises to fame in [[Volume 4]].</ref> He hardly remembers the solutions of any cases because Conan knocks him out with tranquillizer darts so that he can announce the solution to the case while hidden, using a device that allows him to imitate Kogoro's voice as a proxy. However, Kogoro never seems to wonder about this fact and often boasts about his merits. Because of this, he has become nicknamed the '''{{nihongo|Sleeping Kogoro|眠りの小五郎|Nemuri no Kogorou}}'''. [[Jugo Yokomizo]] often mistakenly calls him '''{{nihongo|Smoking Kogoro|煙の小五郎|Kemuri no Kogorou}}''' because of his heavy smoking habits. Because of his (or rather, Conan's) tendency to coincidentally come across a crime scene, Inspector Megure is often referred to Kogoro as a '''shinigami''' (death god).

In later stories, there are times when Kogoro is actually able to solve crime cases without (or little) help from Conan, especially when people he knows or cares about are involved; it appears that, while he can connect the dots just fine, he can't actually find them as quickly as Conan does. The first of these events takes place during a trip to a hot spring, where one of his old college friends is murdered. Despite his frequent moronic analyses, Kogoro is actually pretty smart when he applies himself.
