Chikage Kuroba is a character in the manga franchise Magic Kaito.

Background
Not much is known about Chikage yet as her appearances in Magic Kaito have been limited to the first chapter of Volume 1 and the animated special Magic Kaito: Kid the Phantom Thief. In the manga it is implied she was aware of Toichi's secret life as Kaitou Kid and that her son, Kaito, discovered Toichi's secret for himself. In the TV special she was away in Las Vegas at the time, so it is not clear if she knew Toichi's secret or that Kaito has taken up the role of Kaitou Kid for himself.

Plot overview
Chikage has to-date only appeared in a minor supporting role in Magic Kaito. In the manga, she lived with Kaito and seemed to be a stay-at-home mom. Though it has yet to be confirmed, she seems to be aware of her son and husband's alter-ego, as when Kaito first activates the mechanism that unlocks the room where Kid's suit is, she hears the sound and thinks to herself 'don't tell me...' - hinting that she recognizes the noise.

In the anime adaptation of the first chapter of Magic Kaito, however, Chikage is abroad. From a skype conversation with her son, it seems that she has been traveling extensively, as Kaito grouses "Geez, spending Dad's savings..." At the time of the episode, she was in Vegas with another unnamed woman, and claimed to have already seen three magic shows that day.

It has been suggested by Conan that whoever is the mother of Kaitou Kid is is also the thief known as "Phantom Lady" because of a remark Kid made at the Ryoma Gunbelt heist. This is only conjecture though as Conan is simply thinking to himself and Kid neither supports or denies this idea. It is worth noting however that Chikage's updated appearance from the Magic Kaito TV special matches the hairstyle of the Phantom Lady.

Personality
Although not much is known about Chikage, it can be implied she has a mischievous side to her character because she tells Aoko about Kaito's one weakness: fish.

Trivia
* The name 'Chikage' means 'one thousand shadows' in Japanese.
* Chikage has never been named during a Detective Conan or Magic Kaito story. Her name is only known from the credits of the Magic Kaito special.
Jii ceases being Kid and becomes Kaito's assistant upon seeing Kaito rightfully take Toichi's place as the Kaitou Kid.

Kaito Kuroba is the current Kaitou Kid. Kaito is a second-year student at Ekoda High School Class 2-B alongside his childhood friend Aoko Nakamori, the witch Akako Koizumi, and transfer student detective Saguru Hakuba. Kaito discovers his father's identity as the original Kaitou Kid after eight years following his death thanks to a secret room inside his house as well as talking with his father's attendant and friend, Konosuke Jii. Wanting to pick up where Jii left off, Kaito continues to be Kaitou Kid in an effort to lure out his father's murderers by making Kid a world-famous thief once again. It isn't until the Blue Birthday heist that the murderers appear and reveal that they are searching for the doublet red-coloured gem Pandora, said to shed tears of immortality during the passing of a particular comet. Upon realizing the organization's aim and that his father was killed for his refusal to aid them in retrieving Pandora, Kaito vows as Kaitou Kid to find the Pandora gem first and shatter it into pieces.

<font size=1>Note: It has been suggested that the organization in question may actually be the Black Organization in Detective Conan, but this theory has yet to be proven. The member of the organization that claimed responsibility for killing Toichi eight years ago is referred to as "Snake", a nickname that doesn't fit in with the codenames of the Black Organization, suggesting they are two separate groups. This though may not be the case if Snake refers to Snake Wine, but because Kaitou Kid's origins have yet to be reexplained within the Detective Conan story, this is only speculation. It does not help that in Snake's second appearance during the Crystal Mother heist he is referred to as "Jackal", yet another name that doesn't fit with the Organization's codenames.</font>

Jii as Kid
Kaito as Kid
Kid is infamous for having a rather arrogant attitude, always preferring to create as big a bang as possible. He loves nothing more then leading the police in wild goose chases, letting them get within a hair of catching him before exiting one way or another. Seemingly having a soft-spot for his fans, there has been more then one occasion when Kid has refused to show when the police tried to bar the general public from witnessing his act. Kaitou Kid is also quite a charmer, seeming to always know just what to say to the ladies to leave them speechless. Kid hates to see others get hurt, and never hesitates in leaping to rescue someone, whether physically or mentally.
Ai Haibara, real name Shiho Miyano, is the inventor of the APTX 4869 poison that shrunk Shinichi Kudo into Conan Edogawa, and a victim of the poison herself. Formerly Sherry of the Black Organization, she is on the run from them and lives with Professor Agasa. She is also one of few characters who knows Shinichi is Conan.

Background
Shiho Miyano and her older sister, Akemi, were born into the secret crime syndicate "The Black Organization". She was born to an English mother, Elena Miyano, and a Japanese father, Atsushi Miyano. Both of whom were members of the organization, and deceased. A prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project for the organization. Her nickname in the Organization is "Sherry", after the alcohol.

Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound for APTX 4869. She discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. In the manga, while researching its effects, Shiho noticed that a rare few of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect, when they used it on Shinichi Kudo, the Organization orders a search for him because his body had not been found. Shiho searched Shinichi's house twice after he had been shrunk to confirm his death for the Black Organization. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation after she searched his house for a second time and found that his clothes from primary school were missing. Shiho then confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him.

Her unhappiness over the Black Organization's usage of the APTX 4869 (for killing purposes), in addition to her open questioning over the murder of her sister, Akemi Miyano, resulted in her imprisonment and scheduled execution by the Black Organization. With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 to commit suicide.

Like Shinichi, she is one of the only two known rare cases who didn't die after taking the drug; but instead shrunk into a seven or eight year old girl. In her new smaller body, she escapes from the Black Organization and collapses in front of Shinichi's house, hoping he may be able to help her. She was then found and adopted by Hiroshi Agasa.

Ai Haibara
To prevent the knowledge of her transfiguration from being discovered, she and Hiroshi Agasa created her alias Ai Haibara (known as Anita Hailey in the English dub). As Ai Haibara she attends Teitan Elementary School with Shinichi Kudo's shrunken form, Conan Edogawa.

Personality
Shiho has a sang-froid, mistrustful, sarcastic and cold attitude and often reminds others about the darker side of reality and human nature. As Ai Haibara she acts older than she is supposed to be, which the Shounen Tantei refer to her as "cool". But despite her jaded demeanor, she has shown to be kind and caring at occasion. She's a bit quiet, though this may be due to her caution to keep herself hidden from the Black Organization. She is sometimes cold and very analytical, however, there are times where she softens her demeanor and reveals herself to be a true friend. She is a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (as witnessed in Movie 5: Countdown to Heaven where she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Her greatest fear is being caught by the BO and she is especially terrified of Gin. Smart, stubborn, and with a somewhat twisted sense of humor, she tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions that usually result in his gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret.

Taste for fashion
Ai seems to have some interest in fashion, as she has made repeated requests for a certain type of purse when asked to do something. In one of the cases for instance, in order to expose the identity of the person who hid the phone cables to cut off communications with the outside world, she was asked by Conan to fake an unbearable appendix pain, which she agreed to after jokingly requesting for a Sai Brands wallet for her cooperation. She then started rolling on the floor and screaming for help. The culprit felt like he had no choice but to reveal the cable from his pockets and reconnect the phone to ask for an ambulance.
Ai Haibara seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits to it. In the fourth movie, she says to Conan that she wished she could forget her memories about the Black Organization and the death of her sister and the pill, claiming that all she wants to be was a normal little girl and live together with Conan forever. But then as Conan was shocked by the words, Ai immediately said she was lying. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friend or otherwise. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence, she finds it easier to talk to him.

* Ai Haibara and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya

Mitsuhiko seems to have heavy romantic feelings for Ai, and Ai is aware of this. Ai uses his feelings to her advantage when she needs him to do something, but she also does admire his courage during missions the Detective Boys must perform.

* Ai Haibara and Ran Mouri

There are instances where Haibara will caution Conan from actions that involve Ran, though it's assumed this is due merely to the fact that she wants to keep her identity hidden. At one point, she was very cold and distant towards Ran, just like she was to most other people. Ran believed that it was because that Haibara had hated her. However, later that day, Haibara finally properly introduced herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends. Haibara believes that Ran looks a lot like her older sister, Akemi Miyano, so she takes special interest in protecting her. These feelings began after Ran jumped through a slew of bullets from Vermouth, to save Haibara and hold her down to the ground, as if to take the bullets for Haibara. Haibara immediately thinks of her own sister, and begins to treat and look at Ran as a spitting image of Akemi. Haibara also begs for Ran to stay at Agasa's house, during when she had learned that Korn, Chianti, and the rest of the Black Organization were lurking about, immediately thinking of her own sister's death, and wanting to keep Ran safe.

* Ai Haibara and Ayumi Yoshida
Haibara has tried to keep an emotional distance away from the rest of the Detective Boys since the beginning. However, over time, we can see they she can not resist their friendliness. This is especially true in the case of Ayumi. In season twelve, Ayumi noticed that she called everyone by their first names except for Haibara and decided to try and call her Ai-chan but she wasn't successful. At the end of the case, Haibara told Ayumi that it was ok for her to call her Ai-chan. When Mitsuhiko and Genta tried to call her that however, she told them that only Ayumi was allowed to call her by her first name. Ai seems to see her as a little sister, even standing in front of her to protect Ayumi from danger.

* Ai Haibara and Hiroshi Agasa
The relationship between Ai and Professor Agasa is a rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite what their actual ages are, Ai often times acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occassions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. There's also been instances where she'll automatically step in front of Agasa in cases of danger. Out of all the people she's met, Ai seems most comfortable about acting herself with the Professor; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the BO, and took her in.

Name origin
According to Agasa, Ai's name comes from Cordelia Gray (the character 灰 in her name means "ash") and V. I. Warshawski (I = "Ai"). Although Agasa suggested she use the kanji 愛 (love) for "Ai", she preferred to use the kanji 哀 (sorrow).
A detective in his own right, Heiji is first considered Shinichi Kudo's biggest rival. However, after his second meet-up with Conan, Heiji considers Shinichi to be one of his closest friends, and even knows of Shinichi's secret of being Conan Edogawa. Conan and Heiji often work together to help solve a case. His best friend since childhood is Kazuha Toyama. His father is the police chief in Osaka, Heizo Hattori.

Background
Personality
Simply put, Heiji is 'that guy' - the one who seems to make it his personal goal to brighten everyone's days. Almost always seen with a cocky smirk on his face, he has a habit of over thinking things and then laughing at himself for it. Heiji's the sort of person who'd fall into the mud, and laugh about it along with everyone else while still covered in dirt. Even while solving a case he tends to be lighthearted and good humored, preferring to work through it with a grin on his face.

He's also known to be extremely protective of those he values as close friends, and tries hard to keep them out of harm. There's several instances where he'll tell Kazuha to stay out of cases, simply because he's afraid of her getting hurt. Furthermore, he's pretty much always watching Shinichi's back, and does whatever he can to not only keep the boy safe, but to keep his identity under cover.

Relationships analysis
* Heiji Hattori and Kazuha Toyama
Heiji's relationship with Kazuha Toyama is a very close one; they were childhood friends, and have stayed close even through the years. There Relationship gets mistaken for a romantic relationship by everyone even though they claim that they don't have that sort of relationship/feelings for each other. But of course this is not true since he has shown that he is protective of her when she is with other guys and says that he will never let her get hurt no matter what. Now Kazuha has the same feelings for him, as well as being protective and chasing of other women that might have a interest in him. Also they have the same situation as Ran and Shinichi as of being childhood friends that have romantic feelings for each other and has the same back round as them since Heiji is a teenage detective and she is a detective's daughter sort of like Ran is a detective's daughter and Shinichi is a teenage detective. They are called the 'Ran and Shinichi of Osaka' by fans since there so similar. Even Though they might have there fights they will still love each other no matter what. It is also showed in the 7th movie that he fell in love with her (without noticing it was Kazuha) which was his first love and is still his only love.

* Heiji Hattori and Shinichi Kudo
Of course, this might also be to make up for all the times Heiji calls him Kudo, which has nearly given Shinichi away multiple times. Heiji can be a little bit worried for Shinichi when he gets into trouble and in a life or death situation as so far as to tell him to stay out of trouble. They are as close as real live brothers, both being detective's and having feelings for their childhood friends. When they're caught solving a case together, it's not unusual for their minds to move in sync, and they'll often speak in pretty much perfect tandem.
Saguru Hakuba is a character in the manga Magic Kaito, who has made multiple appearances in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. Hakuba is another teenage detective, just like Shinichi Kudo and Heiji Hattori. However, he does a lot of his work in England, as well as Japan, and has handled more cases than even Shinichi and Heiji. However, unlike Shinichi and Heiji, Hakuba has been known to make mistakes. Hakuba considers Heiji beneath him, and in one case, criticizes Heiji's every move, even when it turns out Heiji's deductions and ideas were correct over Hakuba's own deductions.

Background
Magic Kaito
Prior to arriving in Japan sometime around February 23, 1990, Hakuba spent time as a detective in England and attended London Bridge School. According to Hakuba's father Hakuba is most interested in meeting the infamous Kaitou Kid and is taken to the Adam's Smile painting heist. Hakuba fails to capture Kid but begins collecting clues as to Kid's true identity. On February 24, 1990 (much to Kaito's dismay) Hakuba transfers into Ekoda High School Class 2-B and continues his mission to unmask Kid.

Detective Conan
During the Twilight Palace case it is revealed Hakuba has a pet hawk named Watson whom he got in England.

Personality
According to Hakuba's own introduction to Aoko, Hakuba is 180 cm tall, weighs 65 kg, was born on August 29th under the Virgo zodiac, and is blood type 'A'.

As a detective, Hakuba takes great interest in learning culprit's motives asking "Why did you do this?". Hakuba seems to pay a great deal of attention to time, carrying a pocket watch that only loses 0.001 seconds per year. Hakuba even notes during the Adam's Smile painting heist that Kaitou Kid is a minute and 13.02 seconds late.

During his first appearances in Magic Kaito, Hakuba is seen often wearing an Inverness cape and a deerstalker, much like the stereotypical portrait of Sherlock Holmes. In later appearances he has given up this look opting for a suit instead.
The relationship between Hakuba and Kaito is a rather tense one; since Hakuba convinced himself early on that Kaito was instead Kid, and during the first few volumes he's constantly throwing out offhand comments that show his suspicion. However, later on in the Manga, we have a small scene where Hakuba calls Kaito from Paris in order to give him some information on 'Chat Noir', a dangerous, fellow gem thief trying to outshine Kid. Though Kaito continues to vehemently deny being Kid, Hakuba gives him the information anyways, ending the conversation with, "Do your best at least. I don't want to see you lose to anyone before I capture you myself". Whether or not that was his actual motive, or if he was merely concerned for Kaito's well being, is unknown.

* Saguru Hakuba and Aoko Nakamori

Prior to the heist in Volume 3, Chapter 3, Hakuba seems to flirt with Aoko after Kaito turns down Aoko's offer to go to the Prince Prince concert. Hakuba and Kaito then make a bet that if Hakuba manages to catch Kid then Hakuba will go to the concert with Aoko, and if he fails to capture the thief, Kaito will go instead. When interviewed before the heist, Hakuba notes "Tonight's battle has a special meaning to me". Although initially excited to have Hakuba want to go to the concert with her, Aoko during the actual heist seems to want Hakuba to fail so that she can go to the concert with Kaito instead. This relationship has not been touched upon much since then because of Hakuba's limited appearances in Magic Kaito and Detective Conan.
Background
Kaitou Kid is really the alter ego of High School student Kaito Kuroba. He is the greatest Jewel Theif in Japan and is known for never being caught. Kaito's father was the original Kaitou Kid until his death at the hands of an unknown man named Snake. Ten years later, Kaito discovers his father's secret lair and dons the clothes of the Phantom Theif. As he masquerades as Kaitou Kid, he meets his father's old friend, Jii, who reveals to him the secret of his father's mission and the truth behind his father's death. Now Kaito has taken up his father's quest, to find the legendary jewel Pandora, and also to find the man who killed him.

Personality
Kid is infamous for having a rather arrogant attitude, always prefering to create as big a bang as possible. He loves nothing more then leading the police in wild goose chases, letting them get within a hair of catching him before exiting one way or another. Seemingly having a soft-spot for his fans, there has been more then one occassion when Kid has refused to show when the police tried to bar the general public from witnessing his act. Kaito Kid is also quite a charmer, seeming to always know just what to say to the ladies to leave them speechless. Despite the fact the other is seen as a villian, Kid obviously hates to see other's get hurt, and never hesitates in leaping to rescue someone, wether physically or mentally.
Conan Edogawa is the alias used by Shinichi Kudo in his shrunken form. Conan is often treated as a separate character from Shinichi by fans, and often viewed as the main character of the series while Shinichi is viewed as a recurring character.

Background
Shinichi comes up with the alias Conan Edogawa after Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo and pretends to be a distant relative of Agasa's who places Conan in Ran's care. Ran's father Kogoro Mouri, owns a Detective Agency which may allow him to run into a case involving the Black Organization. He is signed up at Titan Elementary to further protect his identity and makes friends with some of the kids and forms the Detective Boys.

As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Dr. Agasa made for him. By solving cases one after the other, he helps build up Kogoro's reputation who will later on be referred to as "Sleeping Kogoro". He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Dr. Agasa.

As the story progresses, Conan later befriends biochemist Ai Haibara. Haibara Ai or Ai Haibara grew up within the Black Organization and is a former member of it along with her sister.

She is the creator of the APTX 4869 drug but took the drug in order to escape from the Black Organization. Conan has run into the Black Organization multiple times, but he fails in tracking them due to Gin's cleverness.

Throughout the series Conan has returned back to normal. First he temporary returns to normal after drinking alcohol while infected with a cold. He quickly turns back into Conan after solving the case. The next time was after taking the prototype antidote for APTX 4869.

After two days, the antidote wears off and he becomes Conan again. Much further into the series, Shinichi accidentally takes a prototype antidote for APTX 4896. The antidote wears off 24 hours later but he is given another one by Ai to keep his identity secret. After another four hours, he becomes Conan again.

APTX 4869
APTX 4869

APTX is a fictional toxin and a derivative of an experimental immortality formula developed by Shiho Miyano, which is used by the Black Organization as an untraceable, lethal poison. APTX usually causes death but may, in very rare cases, decrease the victim's apparent age instead. Shinichi falls victim to the poison in the series' pilot. Later Shiho Miyano, who chooses to attempt suicide by using her own drug, was added to the two known people to have survived after taking the APTX-4869.

Throughout the series there are several instances in which the APTX was temporarily neutralized and Shinichi and Shiho were returned to their actual age forms. The main ingredient for this reversal is a component found in Chinese ginseng root schnaps, which Ai has already incorporated in a prototype antidote for the APTX. It is to note that in the instances where Shinichi or Shiho changed back, the recipient was suffering from a common cold while the component was ingested, indicating that the immune system somehow has to be taxed for the antidote to work.
* Conan Edogawa and Ai Haibara

Ai Haibara is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as Conan's Mother and Gin, have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. both victims of the APTX 4869), she finds it easier to talk to him.
* Conan Edogawa and Ayumi Yoshida
Conan grows to respect the little girl in his class for her sharp wit and observational skills, along with the other members of the Junior Detective League.
* Conan Edogawa and Heiji Hattori

When they first meet, Conan and Heiji seem bound to become lifelong rivals. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act almost like an older brother towards him. Since then the two have become rather close friends, though Conan often seems to find Heiji more of an annoyance then anything, due to his dangerous habbit of calling Conan 'Kudo' when other's are present.
List of characters who know Conan's identity

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are Hiroshi Agasa, Conan's parents, Heiji Hattori and Ai Haibara.
