The murder weapon was Kyona Shono's selfie stick, which Saya took to her own apartment. To close Kyona's apartment door and leave the card inside, she used her toy helicopter. Her motive was that she thought Kyona knew she had accidentally killed an old man in a car accident and fled the crime scene, but in fact the only secret Kyona knew was that Saya was actually 5 years older than she claimed to be.

Afterwards, [[Hyoue Kuroda]] arrives on the scene, announces that [[Kiyonaga Matsumoto]] has been promoted, and that he will be taking his place. Conan looks on in shock and Ai grips his shoulder in fear, as Kuroda asks for Conan's assistance in his new position.

[[Ai Haibara|Ai]] tells [[Conan|Conan]] that she doesn't recognize [[Hyoue Kuroda|Superintendent Kuroda]], that her reaction towards him was trigger purely by his scary appearance. She further reassures him by mentioning that, since Hyoue got a clear look at her face, he would've done something by now. As Ai checks her phone she is left shocked, Conan, believing that it might be regarding the [[Hiroshi Agasa|professor]], grabs her phone away, but sees that her speechlessness was induced by a tabloid article claiming to have exposed [[Ryusuke Higo|Ryusuke]] and [[Yoko Okino|Yoko's]] affair. In the Mouri Detective Agency, [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] has lost his spirits after hearing about the relationship on television. Soon afterwards Ai barges into the office and hires him as a private eye on Yoko, pro bono. After a quick search on the internet Conan, [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], Ai and Kogoro visit the restaurant where the alleged couple was seen, and stake out their date under the pretense of dining. The owner of the restaurant, Higo's friend and former Tokyo Spirits player is told to be absent, according to the sommelier Akimichi Yamada. The waitress Reiko Banba is approaching the couple's table carrying desserts, however as she was placing down a plate she knocked over Yoko's wineglass. Ex-boyfriend and fellow waiter Yasuto Kounoe warns her that the owner will be scolding her for the mishap, since Higo is an acquaintance of him, but she brushes it off. As the owner is running late, the staff decides to go look for him. Akimichi suggests him and Yasuto check the back room, while Reiko checks the storeroom. Both men check the back room and don't find the owner resting there, pointing out that the couch in the middle of the room is used for naps, and that the owner hasn't been getting enough rest lately. Yasuto mentions an argument between the sommelier and owner, regarding the wine prices. Upon her return, Reiko announces that the owner isn't to be found in the storeroom either, and the staff decides to wait it out.
After another of Ryusuke's inquiries, the staff decides to look for the owner once again. Yasuto will head into the back room, Akimichi will check the storeroom and Reiko will look for him in the staff room, where she finds him taking a nap on the couch, covered from head to toe with a blanket. After ten minutes, the owner is still asleep, so the staff decides to wake him up. Akimichi heads into the room with the key, but outside Yasuto receives a message from the owner, asking him to bring his acquaintance and Yoko to the storeroom. Just as Kogoro decides to take a short smoking break, they hear Yoko scream and run towards the back area. Kogoro rushes down into the cellar only to find Yoko and Ryusuke next to Teiya Asuka's dead body.

====Kanazawa Part====

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] arrive in Kanazawa via train and as they leave the station they see the Tsuzumimon gate. Kogoro has been asked to participate in the Kaga-Hyakumangoku mystery tour. Yuzo Tanimoto, a tourism association employee introduces himself first, followed by Moeko Miyazawa who also works for the association, Yuya Tadokoro, an event manager and Osamu Kuranishi and Harumi Akiyama who both also are employees for the association. After having received each business card, Kogoro introduces himself as the great detective and prepares to hand out his golden business cards.

A case awaits this year's participants in Kanazawa and Kaga, they will meet up at certain checkpoints which are located at sightseeing spots and collect hints which have been created by Akiyama, in order to reveal the culprit. Believing that the mystery will be no problem for him, and since the employees wanted to test it on him, he agrees to take part in it and solve the mystery. They are given a guidebook which is supposed to help them with the hints, as well as a card which contains the first hint (The experience of "Catching fleas" in front of a mirror) which is decoded to lead towards the Kaga-Yuzen house of traditional commerce. While Ran is wearing a Kimono in the building, she receives positive feedback regarding it, and points out to Akiyama that she's wearing a watch which is intended, by model, for men, to which she replies that she had gotten it from her brother. Once finished, they are given the next hint and warned that it gets more difficult from there on. The next hint is quickly solved by Conan and is revealed to mean "sweets experience", which leads them towards a tourism-expo in the Ishikawa prefecture. Before they are able to leave they are interrupted by someone screaming who is getting mugged. The mugger is quickly stopped by Kogoro and throws the stolen bag at them, then heads off in the other direction. Kogoro returns the bag to its owner and is thanked by her. At the expo they are creating their own sweets with which Kogoro seems to struggle with a fair bit. At an art exhibition Conan's hunch turns out to be true and somebody appears to be following and recording them. He seems to think for a short moment that it might just be the couple who he has seen earlier taking a picture, but is quickly shocked having felt the same sensation. During lunch it is revealed that Osamu and Harumi are engaged, Yuya points out jokingly that it's a favourable coincidence that her father is the president of a known company. While eating, Conan asks Moeko why she is carrying a heavy bag with her, since she could've just left it in the bus, to which she reacts scared and desperate, but is saved by Ran who's scolding him, saying that the content of woman's bag is her own business. After a few comments regarding the look of a criminal, after they heard a news story on television, Ran asks Akiyama if she's well, who looks completely scared after, what appears to have been, a message on her phone.

After a visit at the market, the group meets up with the employees again, with Akiyama apologizing since she has lost the next hint card, though she remembers its content. Back at the bus she prepares an improvised hint card which Kogoro is able to understand by himself. After its meaning is explained on location, the group splits up as they head forward, with Yuya, Osamu and Harumi leaving separately. In a lake house they are given the next hint which consists of three different symbols, which are revealed to lead to the Kanazawa castle, where they are given the next hint card. It is a rather simple substraction which leads to the Kanazawa 21st century Artmuseum. Suddenly the mugger from earlier arrives and attacks Mouri, who uses his trademark judo throw. As he starts running after the criminal he is first stopped by Yuzo, but quickly continues his pursuit. Conan spots the couple from earlier and as they see that they were spotted leave abruptly, but he follows them with Moeko following him. She trips, drops her bag and a camera falls out. The mugger appears again, complaining that Miyazawa hasn't informed him of Kogoro's strength. By a tree in the not so far distance the woman who was mugged earlier is also seen. Conan reveals that it has all been a setup and that Moeko was filming them earlier at the art exhibition. She apologizes and explains that the couple was actually their camera man and assistant, and the mugger and victim were actors. They tried setting up such a scene to help the PR of the event. She also reveals that both her and Akiyama had hidden cameras on them. The three men appear and everybody apologizes for the inconvience, asking for a chance to explain themselves.

Near the castle they spot Akiyama on the floor, bludgeoned as Osamu runs towards her. He yells at the rest to call an ambulance and Conan observes that this might have been just a case of mugging, since her handbag is open and lying on the floor, but if it was just a random case then there should be more victims, concluding that the culprit must have targeted Akiyama.

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] arrive in Kanazawa via train and as they leave the station they see the Tsuzumimon gate. Kogoro has been asked to participate in the Kaga-Hyakumangoku mystery tour. Yuzo Tanimoto, a tourism association employee introduces himself first, followed by Moeko Miyazawa who also works for the association, Yuya Tadokoro, an event manager and Osamu Kuranishi and Harumi Akiyama who both also are employees for the association. After having received each business card, Kogoro introduces himself as the great detective and prepares to hand out his golden business cards.

A case awaits this year's participants in Kanazawa and Kaga, they will meet up at certain checkpoints which are located at sightseeing spots and collect hints which have been created by Akiyama, in order to reveal the culprit. Believing that the mystery will be no problem for him, and since the employees wanted to test it on him, he agrees to take part in it and solve the mystery. They are given a guidebook which is supposed to help them with the hints, as well as a card which contains the first hint (The experience of "Catching fleas" in front of a mirror) which is decoded to lead towards the Kaga-Yuzen house of traditional commerce. While Ran is wearing a Kimono in the building, she receives positive feedback regarding it, and points out to Akiyama that she's wearing a watch which is intended, by model, for men, to which she replies that she had gotten it from her brother. Once finished, they are given the next hint and warned that it gets more difficult from there on. The next hint is quickly solved by Conan and is revealed to mean "sweets experience", which leads them towards a tourism-expo in the Ishikawa prefecture. Before they are able to leave they are interrupted by someone screaming who is getting mugged. The mugger is quickly stopped by Kogoro and throws the stolen bag at them, then heads off in the other direction. Kogoro returns the bag to its owner and is thanked by her. At the expo they are creating their own sweets with which Kogoro seems to struggle with a fair bit. At an art exhibition Conan's hunch turns out to be true and somebody appears to be following and recording them. He seems to think for a short moment that it might just be the couple who he has seen earlier taking a picture, but is quickly shocked having felt the same sensation. During lunch it is revealed that Osamu and Harumi are engaged, Yuya points out jokingly that it's a favourable coincidence that her father is the president of a known company. While eating, Conan asks Moeko why she is carrying a heavy bag with her, since she could've just left it in the bus, to which she reacts scared and desperate, but is saved by Ran who's scolding him, saying that the content of woman's bag is her own business. After a few comments regarding the look of a criminal, after they heard a news story on television, Ran asks Akiyama if she's well, who looks completely scared after, what appears to have been, a message on her phone.

After a visit at the market, the group meets up with the employees again, with Akiyama apologizing since she has lost the next hint card, though she remembers its content. Back at the bus she prepares an improvised hint card which Kogoro is able to understand by himself. After its meaning is explained on location, the group splits up as they head forward, with Yuya, Osamu and Harumi leaving separately. In a lake house they are given the next hint which consists of three different symbols, which are revealed to lead to the Kanazawa castle, where they are given the next hint card. It is a rather simple substraction which leads to the Kanazawa 21st century Artmuseum. Suddenly the mugger from earlier arrives and attacks Mouri, who uses his trademark judo throw. As he starts running after the criminal he is first stopped by Yuzo, but quickly continues his pursuit. Conan spots the couple from earlier and as they see that they were spotted leave abruptly, but he follows them with Moeko following him. She trips, drops her bag and a camera falls out. The mugger appears again, complaining that Miyazawa hasn't informed him of Kogoro's strength. By a tree in the not so far distance the woman who was mugged earlier is also seen. Conan reveals that it has all been a setup and that Moeko was filming them earlier at the art exhibition. She apologizes and explains that the couple was actually their camera man and assistant, and the mugger and victim were actors. They tried setting up such a scene to help the PR of the event. She also reveals that both her and Akiyama had hidden cameras on them. The three men appear and everybody apologizes for the inconvience, asking for a chance to explain themselves.

Near the castle they spot Akiyama on the floor, bludgeoned as Osamu runs towards her. He yells at the rest to call an ambulance and Conan observes that this might have been just a case of mugging, since her handbag is open and lying on the floor, but if it was just a random case then there should be more victims, concluding that the culprit must have targeted Akiyama.

Near the castle they spot Akiyama on the floor, bludgeoned as Osamu runs towards her. He yells at the rest to call an ambulance and Conan observes that this might have been just a case of mugging, since her handbag is open and lying on the floor, but if it was just a random case then there should be more victims, concluding that the culprit must have targeted Akiyama.

===File 909 - Kamaitachi is Coming===

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] talks to [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] about cases on the phone, thinking to himself that he can't let Hattori get involved in the [[Rum|Rum]] case, something that still remains so unclear. After a bit of banter between them, Conan plays a recording from an [[Volume 83#Drug Trading Case|earlier case]], to Heiji's surprise, when he confessed to [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]].

Heiji and Kazuha invite the group to Nagano. While they are enjoying Kudzu soup Heiji pulls out a photo which appears to have captured the Kamaitachi. By comparing it to another picture, it seems as if the Kamaitachi is running above water. Daigo Nakama, the reporter who took the picture introduces himself to the group, stating that he has come back to snap additional pictures to further strengthen his report, which, as Midori Koyanagi, a reporter from an competitor's magazine, states, has received complaints about possibly being fake.
Kouhei Oono, the owner's son says that he has seen the Kamaitachi, he even tried following it but started to drown in the water and fainted, after which he was laid in the hallway, drenched in water. Takami Oono, Kouhei's mother, the now widowed owner thanked Daigo for his published work, since it has increased the number of guests at the inn, eventhough people are now less likely to use the outdoor hot springs. Bonzou Oono, the owner's father-in-law suggested nyotaimori (Serving Sashimi/Sushi on a naked female body) to raise the number of guests at the inn, however the owner isn't really inclined to the idea and believes that he's just joking.

The guests ask her if she has anything valuable to sell, to at least cover expenses, to which the owner mentions an old sickle that matches the one seen in the picture. The group gets excited about it and wants to take a look at it. While they get going, Heiji asks Conan if he would delete the recording of him confessing his love, but Conan declines.
As the group finds the sickle in an old warehouse, the lightbulb breaks. Conan uses his wrist watch to illuminate the area, only to see that Heiji and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] have been cut on their arm and back of their hand, respectively and the reporter Midori on her face vertically.

===File 910 - The Murderous Kamaitachi===

While tending to the wounds, the guests are waiting for the police to arrive. Since they are in Nagano, they eagerly await [[Kansuke Yamato|Yamato]] to come. With his name being mentioned, [[Conan|Conan]] remembers what [[Ai Haibara|Ai]] told him about [[Rum|Rum]] - that he has one prosthethic eye, that some said he's a strong man, some he's very feminine and others claimed he's an old man. Conan compares those epithets with his look, concluding that some might consider him a strong man for his physical abilities, some might see him as feminine because of his ponytail, and others might think of him as an old man since he's using a cane to walk around.
Much to their surprise, the police inspector in charge is [[Misao Yamamura|Yamamura]], since it's located on the very border of the Gunma prefecture. As they inspect the storage room, they go over the facts that [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]], [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] and Midori were slashed during the blackout, while Daigo held the sickle. As the inspector asks the owner about the room, she tells him about a robbery which happened a few days prior, but nothing of significance was stolen. Kouhei is happy about the 'Kamaitachi's' appearance, but his mother scolds him slightly and reminds him to decorate his room, [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]] offer their help. Due to the evidence which they were able to collect, Conan and Heiji agree on it that the murder weapon has to be a shard from the broken lightbulb, but it turns out they were wrong, as there wasn't any blood on the shards and the forensics were able to rebuild the bulb into its original shape with all the present shards, however, Yamamura states that he found gum and cigarette ash residue on the floor which he found weird.
The sound of something shattering, explosions and screams startle the group, they quickly advance towards its source to find Ran, Kazuha and the owner's son scared. The fluorescent lamp broke into shards and all the baloons bursted. Right after that, they hear the old man's voice who's in the annex. They arrive at the bath area from which the annex is accessible over the water, which appears to not have been altered with, behind a fence which isn't closed. There is however another way to reach the annex, which is by going around the hotel, which leads to the backdoor. As the group arrives, only the old man's footsteps can be seen in the snow. The light won't turn on but Conan uses his wristwatch to illuminate the room. The door is broken and appears to have been diagonally slashed, behind it is the old man's corpse with the sickle stuck in it.

===File 911 - Kamaitachi's Route===

After the dead body is discovered the guests agree that an ambulance should be called, which [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] disagrees with, since there's no need for it, as the owner's father-in-law is already dead and has been for less than 30 minutes, considering his rigor mortis and body temperature. [[Misao Yamamura|Yamamura]] tells Kogoro that the sickle didn't react to luminol and that they have put it back in the storage room, and also that they have sent the forensics back to the station. [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] makes a remark wondering why there is blood around the cut in the door to the room, deducing that someone had to first murder the old man, then slash the door and put the sickle back in his body. Wondering whether it was all an act to fool everyone into believing it was the Kamaitachi's doing, Heiji reveals that the breaker had been pulled and that the culprit had left some marks at the entrance to the annex. With shattered glass around the door, Kogoro, Heiji and Conan take a look at the snow trail left between the annex and the door which leads to the outdoor hot spring. With the hot spring appearing as it hasn't been touched or changed in any significant way, except for a few droplets of water on the snow on top of stones, it seems as if the culprit had reached the crime scene by running on top of the water and leaving across the surrounding stones, making it seem as if he was riding the wind.

The guests are scared, thinking that the one who committed the deeds was the Kamaitachi. Daigo is especially scared by it. Heiji and Conan decide to keep silent about it towards Ran and Kazuha, but to no avail, since Yamamura had already spilled the beans about the case. While the girls believe it was a monster's doing, Conan finds BB bullets on the tatami mat in Kouhei's room. Heiji finds a piece of the door which can be rolled up, so that a shooter could burst baloons with a gun inside the room while standing outside, but the girls disagree with it, since many baloons have bursted at the same time. Conan smells something strange in the air and wants to investigate further, as he enters the room his wrist watch light runs out of juice so he decides to use his smartphone. He accidentally plays Heiji's recording. Kouhei claims that the room smelled like bathroom detergent and that something that felt like icy cold rain had dripped on him. The group discovers that there was a TV crew present in the past who recorded an interview and a foot massage which Gifu took, during which he screamed loudly, as he was in pain. The owner says that she even has a recording of the said program and the group heads off, with Kazuha staying behind telling Ran about what happened at the Ebisu bridge.

Kazuha is confused about what Heiji really meant when he said "What are you doing do my precious Kazuha?!", whether he thinks of her as his subordinate or if there's a different meaning to it, saying that she often hears similar phrases in historical dramas, but Ran assures her that he didn't think of her as his subordinate.
The owner recalls that many guests have had a liking toward Gifu-sama, as he put them above everything else, at the expense of his tolerance towards the staff. He had kicked out the head waitress of the hotel once he fired her cruelly. The owner can't remember the name of the waitress, but knows that she had a child with her, as it all happened before she married into the family. She also says, to Conan's question, that both the reporters have visited the inn before, Koyanagi doesn't come too often, but Nakama is a regular, they have both also been present the time Kouhei almost drowned in the pool, which happened at the same time when their storage room was first broken into. Their previous visit seemed different, as in that Daigo didn't have a mustache and Midori wasn't wearing any glasses.

Yamamura is surprised about Heiji's time keeping abilities, who is slightly panicking about the snow covering up the crime scene, he asks him how he does such a good job of keeping up, to which he tells him that even though the light went out earlier, he could still see the clock hands of his watch in the dark. Heiji and Conan stand with confident faces as they are sure about the culprit's true identity, while Takami offers some Kudzu soup to warm everybody up.

===File 912 - The Denouement of The Kamaitachi===

[[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] and [[Conan|Conan]], being sure about who the culprit is, want to reenact what happened during the crime. They start off by making sure objects can easily fall into the hot spring, that there is no transparent glass beneath the surface. Conan decides to stay behind since the way to the annex is long and it being cold outside.
Heiji points out that the breaker had already been pulled when they arrived at the crime scene and that they discovered the body with the sickle sticking in it. With Conan's arrival, [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] is surprised how he caught up with them, to which he replies that he came through the hot springs, but to the group's confusion since his clothes aren't wet. He states that he ran across. They seem surprised about his statement and are in awe when he starts sprinting quickly across it. Kogoro wants to try it out but falls in the hot spring. Heiji reveals that the liquid is in fact kudzu soup which tightens up and becomes more solid if you hit it hard enough. He then begins his reasoning.

He reveals that the culprit is '''Midori Koyanagi'''. He states that she purposefully slashed the door and pulled the breaker to divert attention from the hot spring trick. He connects the burglary with her, assuming that she stole large amounts of kudzu powder to perform the trick. Conan explains that Midori bursted the baloons by loading lemon juice into a water gun and shooting at them, since they are made by a material which dissolves when it comes in contact with citrus. She tries to make herself look innocent by pointing out that she was also slashed in the storage room, but Conan calls her out on it by saying that she put chewing gum on the light bulb which made it break due to temperature shifts, that Heiji and Kogoro were slashed because they had objects which were illuminating the area and glowed in the dark, a wrist watch and lit cigarette respectively, but that she was slashed without having anything that glowed. Hattori reveals that she used a small hidden blade which she hid under her fingernail, that she made a suggestion that would lead the group to the storage room and also that she used the recording from the old man's massage to create the sound of his scream. She waited for the group to go around the hotel towards the annex, then crossed the hot springs with the sickle, murdered the old man, slashed the door and pulled the breaker, then rejoined the group. Conan points out that she isn't wearing contact lenses but regular glasses, since it would be hard to put in and remove contacts with fake nails. Heiji continues that it shouldn't be a problem to find remnants of Kogoro's and his blood on her nails.

She admits that it was her who murdered the old man. She tells the story of her mother, the waitress who was shunned away from the inn because of an arranged marriage which was supposed to expand the business of both parties, which were inn and hotel owners. She couldn't bring herself to kill Takami after seeing her cut and scraped hands, which implied that she was a hard worker, similar to her mother.

After the whole ordeal, Conan keeps his promise and deletes the recording. Heiji claims to have said "you bastard", instead of "my" Kazuha, which angers [[Kazuha Toyama|her]] a bit and she calls him an idiot. He remembers Kudo's confession and thinks that after what he did, a simple confession on the Ebisu bridge just isn't enough. Conan, with a slight smirk, tells Heiji that even though he deleted his recording, the other [[Detective Boys|detective boys]] have their own, separate recordings of his confession, which [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] even set as her ringtone.

Shigeru warns him that he won't be able to cover it up and that his life will be ruined, but the person sentences him to death with a sword cut through the neck and a woodpecker mark on his forehead.

[[Misao Yamamura|Yamamura]] offers the group a ride back from the inn but they decide to stay since there's a place [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] wants to visit. Misao isn't happy about it since there's a thick tension between [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] and [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]], who are given a ride by him. Mouri wants to visit the Kawanakajima battlefield, where Shingen Takeda faced off against Kenshin Uesugi. Conan remembers seeing a TV special about the story. He recalls that Takeda Shingen's strategist Kansuke Yamamoto was in love with pricess Yuu, who was portrayed by [[Yoko Okino|Yoko]]. [[Ran Mouri|The Mouris]] try to recall the name of the strategy which was used, but receive the answer [[Yui Uehara|Yui]], who arrives at the scene together with [[Kansuke Yamato|Kansuke]] and [[Taka'aki Morofushi|Taka'aki]]. Inspector Yamato is lightly made fun off due to his name's resemblance to the strategist, even more so since the story's strategy, which is also explained, was a failure. [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] thinks about [[Ai Haibara|Haibara's]] [[Volume 86#File 908 - Betting With Your Life...|description]] of [[Rum|RUM]], realizing just how much it fits Kansuke, and as he is approached by him a police man from the Nagano Police calls out his name. [[Volume 86#People 4|Inspector Mamoru Saegusa]], who is accompanied by Assistant police inspector [[Volume 86#People 4|Shouji Kano]] and [[Volume 86#People 4|sergeant Akiyama Shinsuke]] are on their way to meet with their squad leader, Shigeru Takeda, oblivious to the fact that he had been murdered and had his head chopped off. Inspector Saegusa mentions he wanted to pay his respects to Lord Shingen beforehand and that they were supposed to meet Shigeru there, but they can't find him and he doesn't answer his phone. Before their departure from the group, Kansuke tells them to relay a message to Takeda, saying that even if it would be an order from directly above, he would rather die than join his squad. Uehara suggests showing the group around the Kawanakajima battlefield, as they would have nothing to do, if they left now, besides drinking her black coffee which Kansuke described as terrible. They comment on what their new chief prefers to drink, saying that the previous chief liked black coffee, but the new one, who was transferred from the national police agency prefers black tea.

The group is shown around by Uehara and lead to a bridge overwatching the battlefield. Morofushi recites a short poem written by Retsu Asai which mentions that the river's colour had been tainted red by all the blood of battlefield's victims. As Kansuke dismisses the idea as being a load of manure he spots a head floating down the river leaving a blood trail behind it. He orders Yui to call forensics and runs to the water with Morofushi and Conan. Using his cane he stops the flowing head and pulls it out, recognizing the identity and stating that it is the head of the Takeda squad leader, inspector Shigeru Takeda himself. Taka'aki finds the burned remains of the victim's body which has been smashed in several places, making it impossible to piece the head and body back together. The three police men from Shigeru's group arrive at the scene surprised that their leader had been murdered. Kansuke states that, considering the conditions of the body, he must have been burnt half a day ago. Conan points out a piece of rope which is hanging from the bridge railing which was probably used to keep the head in place for an amount of time and then releasing it into the river. He also points out that fake blood was used to leave the trail, since normal blood would have coagulated by then.

The police forensic points out a strange mark on the victim's forehead which resembles the footprint of an animal. [[Volume 86#People 4|Hyoue Kuroda]], the chief of the first division of Nagano's police suddenly appears claiming that it is the footprint of a woodpecker, explaining that his lifestyle requires him to be able to get a sturdy grip on trees. Conan is shocked as he realizes that the person standing in front of him is an older, well built man with only one eye.

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] talks to [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] about cases on the phone, thinking to himself that he can't let Hattori get involved in the [[Rum|Rum]] case, something that still remains so unclear. After a bit of banter between them, Conan plays a recording from an [[Volume 83#Drug Trading Case|earlier case]], to Heiji's surprise, when he confessed to [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]].

Heiji and Kazuha invite the group to Nagano. While they are enjoying Kudzu soup Heiji pulls out a photo which appears to have captured the Kamaitachi. By comparing it to another picture, it seems as if the Kamaitachi is running above water. Daigo Nakama, the reporter who took the picture introduces himself to the group, stating that he has come back to snap additional pictures to further strengthen his report, which, as Midori Koyanagi, a reporter from an competitor's magazine, states, has received complaints about possibly being fake.
Kouhei Oono, the owner's son says that he has seen the Kamaitachi, he even tried following it but started to drown in the water and fainted, after which he was laid in the hallway, drenched in water. Takami Oono, Kouhei's mother, the now widowed owner thanked Daigo for his published work, since it has increased the number of guests at the inn, eventhough people are now less likely to use the outdoor hot springs. Bonzou Oono, the owner's father-in-law suggested nyotaimori (Serving Sashimi/Sushi on a naked female body) to raise the number of guests at the inn, however the owner isn't really inclined to the idea and believes that he's just joking.

The guests ask her if she has anything valuable to sell, to at least cover expenses, to which the owner mentions an old sickle that matches the one seen in the picture. The group gets excited about it and wants to take a look at it. While they get going, Heiji asks Conan if he would delete the recording of him confessing his love, but Conan declines.
As the group finds the sickle in an old warehouse, the lightbulb breaks. Conan uses his wrist watch to illuminate the area, only to see that Heiji and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] have been cut on their arm and back of their hand, respectively and the reporter Midori on her face vertically.

===File 910 - The Murderous Kamaitachi===

While tending to the wounds, the guests are waiting for the police to arrive. Since they are in Nagano, they eagerly await [[Kansuke Yamato|Yamato]] to come. With his name being mentioned, [[Conan|Conan]] remembers what [[Ai Haibara|Ai]] told him about [[Rum|Rum]] - that he has one prosthethic eye, that some said he's a strong man, some he's very feminine and others claimed he's an old man. Conan compares those epithets with his look, concluding that some might consider him a strong man for his physical abilities, some might see him as feminine because of his ponytail, and others might think of him as an old man since he's using a cane to walk around.
Much to their surprise, the police inspector in charge is [[Misao Yamamura|Yamamura]], since it's located on the very border of the Gunma prefecture. As they inspect the storage room, they go over the facts that [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]], [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] and Midori were slashed during the blackout, while Daigo held the sickle. As the inspector asks the owner about the room, she tells him about a robbery which happened a few days prior, but nothing of significance was stolen. Kouhei is happy about the 'Kamaitachi's' appearance, but his mother scolds him slightly and reminds him to decorate his room, [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]] offer their help. Due to the evidence which they were able to collect, Conan and Heiji agree on it that the murder weapon has to be a shard from the broken lightbulb, but it turns out they were wrong, as there wasn't any blood on the shards and the forensics were able to rebuild the bulb into its original shape with all the present shards, however, Yamamura states that he found gum and cigarette ash residue on the floor which he found weird.
The sound of something shattering, explosions and screams startle the group, they quickly advance towards its source to find Ran, Kazuha and the owner's son scared. The fluorescent lamp broke into shards and all the baloons bursted. Right after that, they hear the old man's voice who's in the annex. They arrive at the bath area from which the annex is accessible over the water, which appears to not have been altered with, behind a fence which isn't closed. There is however another way to reach the annex, which is by going around the hotel, which leads to the backdoor. As the group arrives, only the old man's footsteps can be seen in the snow. The light won't turn on but Conan uses his wristwatch to illuminate the room. The door is broken and appears to have been diagonally slashed, behind it is the old man's corpse with the sickle stuck in it.

===File 911 - Kamaitachi's Route===

After the dead body is discovered the guests agree that an ambulance should be called, which [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] disagrees with, since there's no need for it, as the owner's father-in-law is already dead and has been for less than 30 minutes, considering his rigor mortis and body temperature. [[Misao Yamamura|Yamamura]] tells Kogoro that the sickle didn't react to luminol and that they have put it back in the storage room, and also that they have sent the forensics back to the station. [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] makes a remark wondering why there is blood around the cut in the door to the room, deducing that someone had to first murder the old man, then slash the door and put the sickle back in his body. Wondering whether it was all an act to fool everyone into believing it was the Kamaitachi's doing, Heiji reveals that the breaker had been pulled and that the culprit had left some marks at the entrance to the annex. With shattered glass around the door, Kogoro, Heiji and Conan take a look at the snow trail left between the annex and the door which leads to the outdoor hot spring. With the hot spring appearing as it hasn't been touched or changed in any significant way, except for a few droplets of water on the snow on top of stones, it seems as if the culprit had reached the crime scene by running on top of the water and leaving across the surrounding stones, making it seem as if he was riding the wind.

The guests are scared, thinking that the one who committed the deeds was the Kamaitachi. Daigo is especially scared by it. Heiji and Conan decide to keep silent about it towards Ran and Kazuha, but to no avail, since Yamamura had already spilled the beans about the case. While the girls believe it was a monster's doing, Conan finds BB bullets on the tatami mat in Kouhei's room. Heiji finds a piece of the door which can be rolled up, so that a shooter could burst baloons with a gun inside the room while standing outside, but the girls disagree with it, since many baloons have bursted at the same time. Conan smells something strange in the air and wants to investigate further, as he enters the room his wrist watch light runs out of juice so he decides to use his smartphone. He accidentally plays Heiji's recording. Kouhei claims that the room smelled like bathroom detergent and that something that felt like icy cold rain had dripped on him. The group discovers that there was a TV crew present in the past who recorded an interview and a foot massage which Gifu took, during which he screamed loudly, as he was in pain. The owner says that she even has a recording of the said program and the group heads off, with Kazuha staying behind telling Ran about what happened at the Ebisu bridge.

Kazuha is confused about what Heiji really meant when he said "What are you doing do my precious Kazuha?!", whether he thinks of her as his subordinate or if there's a different meaning to it, saying that she often hears similar phrases in historical dramas, but Ran assures her that he didn't think of her as his subordinate.
The owner recalls that many guests have had a liking toward Gifu-sama, as he put them above everything else, at the expense of his tolerance towards the staff. He had kicked out the head waitress of the hotel once he fired her cruelly. The owner can't remember the name of the waitress, but knows that she had a child with her, as it all happened before she married into the family. She also says, to Conan's question, that both the reporters have visited the inn before, Koyanagi doesn't come too often, but Nakama is a regular, they have both also been present the time Kouhei almost drowned in the pool, which happened at the same time when their storage room was first broken into. Their previous visit seemed different, as in that Daigo didn't have a mustache and Midori wasn't wearing any glasses.

Yamamura is surprised about Heiji's time keeping abilities, who is slightly panicking about the snow covering up the crime scene, he asks him how he does such a good job of keeping up, to which he tells him that even though the light went out earlier, he could still see the clock hands of his watch in the dark. Heiji and Conan stand with confident faces as they are sure about the culprit's true identity, while Takami offers some Kudzu soup to warm everybody up.

===File 912 - The Denouement of The Kamaitachi===

[[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] and [[Conan|Conan]], being sure about who the culprit is, want to reenact what happened during the crime. They start off by making sure objects can easily fall into the hot spring, that there is no transparent glass beneath the surface. Conan decides to stay behind since the way to the annex is long and it being cold outside.
Heiji points out that the breaker had already been pulled when they arrived at the crime scene and that they discovered the body with the sickle sticking in it. With Conan's arrival, [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] is surprised how he caught up with them, to which he replies that he came through the hot springs, but to the group's confusion since his clothes aren't wet. He states that he ran across. They seem surprised about his statement and are in awe when he starts sprinting quickly across it. Kogoro wants to try it out but falls in the hot spring. Heiji reveals that the liquid is in fact kudzu soup which tightens up and becomes more solid if you hit it hard enough. He then begins his reasoning.

He reveals that the culprit is '''Midori Koyanagi'''. He states that she purposefully slashed the door and pulled the breaker to divert attention from the hot spring trick. He connects the burglary with her, assuming that she stole large amounts of kudzu powder to perform the trick. Conan explains that Midori bursted the baloons by loading lemon juice into a water gun and shooting at them, since they are made by a material which dissolves when it comes in contact with citrus. She tries to make herself look innocent by pointing out that she was also slashed in the storage room, but Conan calls her out on it by saying that she put chewing gum on the light bulb which made it break due to temperature shifts, that Heiji and Kogoro were slashed because they had objects which were illuminating the area and glowed in the dark, a wrist watch and lit cigarette respectively, but that she was slashed without having anything that glowed. Hattori reveals that she used a small hidden blade which she hid under her fingernail, that she made a suggestion that would lead the group to the storage room and also that she used the recording from the old man's massage to create the sound of his scream. She waited for the group to go around the hotel towards the annex, then crossed the hot springs with the sickle, murdered the old man, slashed the door and pulled the breaker, then rejoined the group. Conan points out that she isn't wearing contact lenses but regular glasses, since it would be hard to put in and remove contacts with fake nails. Heiji continues that it shouldn't be a problem to find remnants of Kogoro's and his blood on her nails.

She admits that it was her who murdered the old man. She tells the story of her mother, the waitress who was shunned away from the inn because of an arranged marriage which was supposed to expand the business of both parties, which were inn and hotel owners. She couldn't bring herself to kill Takami after seeing her cut and scraped hands, which implied that she was a hard worker, similar to her mother.

After the whole ordeal, Conan keeps his promise and deletes the recording. Heiji claims to have said "you bastard", instead of "my" Kazuha, which angers [[Kazuha Toyama|her]] a bit and she calls him an idiot. He remembers Kudo's confession and thinks that after what he did, a simple confession on the Ebisu bridge just isn't enough. Conan, with a slight smirk, tells Heiji that even though he deleted his recording, the other [[Detective Boys|detective boys]] have their own, separate recordings of his confession, which [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] even set as her ringtone.

==Kawanakajima Murder Case==
[[Volume 86#People 4|Shigeru Takeda]] is backed up against a tree with the culprit in front of him pointing with a sword in his direction. Shigeru warns him that he won't be able to cover it up and that his life will be ruined, but the person sentences him to death with a sword cut through the neck and a woodpecker mark on his forehead.

[[Misao Yamamura|Yamamura]] offers the group a ride back from the inn but they decide to stay since there's a place [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] wants to visit. Misao isn't happy about it since there's a thick tension between [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] and [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]], who are given a ride by him. Mouri wants to visit the Kawanakajima battlefield, where Shingen Takeda faced off against Kenshin Uesugi. Conan remembers seeing a TV special about the story. He recalls that Takeda Shingen's strategist Kansuke Yamamoto was in love with pricess Yuu, who was portrayed by [[Yoko Okino|Yoko]]. [[Ran Mouri|The Mouris]] try to recall the name of the strategy which was used, but receive the answer [[Yui Uehara|Yui]], who arrives at the scene together with [[Kansuke Yamato|Kansuke]] and [[Taka'aki Morofushi|Taka'aki]]. Inspector Yamato is lightly made fun off due to his name's resemblance to the strategist, even more so since the story's strategy, which is also explained, was a failure. [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] thinks about [[Ai Haibara|Haibara's]] [[Volume 86#File 908 - Betting With Your Life...|description]] of [[Rum|RUM]], realizing just how much it fits Kansuke, and as he is approached by him a police man from the Nagano Police calls out his name. [[Volume 86#People 4|Inspector Mamoru Saegusa]], who is accompanied by Assistant police inspector [[Volume 86#People 4|Shouji Kano]] and [[Volume 86#People 4|sergeant Akiyama Shinsuke]] are on their way to meet with their squad leader, Shigeru Takeda, oblivious to the fact that he had been murdered and had his head chopped off. Inspector Saegusa mentions he wanted to pay his respects to Lord Shingen beforehand and that they were supposed to meet Shigeru there, but they can't find him and he doesn't answer his phone. Before their departure from the group, Kansuke tells them to relay a message to Takeda, saying that even if it would be an order from directly above, he would rather die than join his squad. Uehara suggests showing the group around the Kawanakajima battlefield, as they would have nothing to do, if they left now, besides drinking her black coffee which Kansuke described as terrible. They comment on what their new chief prefers to drink, saying that the previous chief liked black coffee, but the new one, who was transferred from the national police agency prefers black tea.

The group is shown around by Uehara and lead to a bridge overwatching the battlefield. Morofushi recites a short poem written by Retsu Asai which mentions that the river's colour had been tainted red by all the blood of battlefield's victims. As Kansuke dismisses the idea as being a load of manure he spots a head floating down the river leaving a blood trail behind it. He orders Yui to call forensics and runs to the water with Morofushi and Conan. Using his cane he stops the flowing head and pulls it out, recognizing the identity and stating that it is the head of the Takeda squad leader, inspector Shigeru Takeda himself. Taka'aki finds the burned remains of the victim's body which has been smashed in several places, making it impossible to piece the head and body back together. The three police men from Shigeru's group arrive at the scene surprised that their leader had been murdered. Kansuke states that, considering the conditions of the body, he must have been burnt half a day ago. Conan points out a piece of rope which is hanging from the bridge railing which was probably used to keep the head in place for an amount of time and then releasing it into the river. He also points out that fake blood was used to leave the trail, since normal blood would have coagulated by then.

The police forensic points out a strange mark on the victim's forehead which resembles the footprint of an animal. [[Volume 86#People 4|Hyoue Kuroda]], the chief of the first division of Nagano's police suddenly appears claiming that it is the footprint of a woodpecker, explaining that his lifestyle requires him to be able to get a sturdy grip on trees. Conan is shocked as he realizes that the person standing in front of him is an older, well built man with only one eye.

He accidentally plays Heiji's recording. Kouhei claims that the room smelled like bathroom detergent and that something that felt like icy cold rain had dripped on him. The group discovers that there was a TV crew present in the past who recorded an interview and a foot massage which Gifu took, during which he screamed loudly, as he was in pain. The owner says that she even has a recording of the said program and the group heads off, with Kazuha staying behind telling Ran about what happened at the Ebisu bridge.

Kazuha is confused about what Heiji really meant when he said "What are you doing do my precious Kazuha?!", whether he thinks of her as his subordinate or if there's a different meaning to it, saying that she often hears similar phrases in historical dramas, but Ran assures her that he didn't think of her as his subordinate.
The owner recalls that many guests have had a liking toward Gifu-sama, as he put them above everything else, at the expense of his tolerance towards the staff. Their previous visit seemed different, as in that Daigo didn't have a mustache and Midori wasn't wearing any glasses.

Heiji and Conan stand with confident faces as they are sure about the culprit's true identity, while Takami offers some Kudzu soup to warm everybody up.

[[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] and [[Conan|Conan]], being sure about who the culprit is, want to reenact what happened during the crime. They start off by making sure objects can easily fall into the hot spring, that there is no transparent glass beneath the surface. She tries to make herself look innocent by pointing out that she was also slashed in the storage room, but Conan calls her out on it by saying that she put chewing gum on the light bulb which made it break due to temperature shifts, that Heiji and Kogoro were slashed because they had objects which were illuminating the area and glowed in the dark, a wrist watch and lit cigarette respectively, but that she was slashed without having anything that glowed. Hattori reveals that she used a small hidden blade which she hid under her fingernail, that she made a suggestion that would lead the group to the storage room and also that she used the recording from the old man's massage to create the sound of his scream. She waited for the group to go around the hotel towards the annex, then crossed the hot springs with the sickle, murdered the old man, slashed the door and pulled the breaker, then rejoined the group. Conan points out that she isn't wearing contact lenses but regular glasses, since it would be hard to put in and remove contacts with fake nails. Heiji continues that it shouldn't be a problem to find remnants of Kogoro's and his blood on her nails.

She admits that it was her who murdered the old man. She tells the story of her mother, the waitress who was shunned away from the inn because of an arranged marriage which was supposed to expand the business of both parties, which were inn and hotel owners. She couldn't bring herself to kill Takami after seeing her cut and scraped hands, which implied that she was a hard worker, similar to her mother.

After the whole ordeal, Conan keeps his promise and deletes the recording. Heiji claims to have said "you bastard", instead of "my" Kazuha, which angers [[Kazuha Toyama|her]] a bit and she calls him an idiot. He remembers Kudo's confession and thinks that after what he did, a simple confession on the Ebisu bridge just isn't enough. Conan, with a slight smirk, tells Heiji that even though he deleted his recording, the other [[Detective Boys|detective boys]] have their own, separate recordings of his confession, which [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] even set as her ringtone.

After a bit of banter between them, Conan plays a recording from an [[Volume 83#Drug Trading Case|earlier case]], to Heiji's surprise, when he confessed to [[Kazuha Toyama|Kazuha]].

Heiji and Kazuha invite the group to Nagano. While they are enjoying Kudzu soup Heiji pulls out a photo which appears to have captured the Kamaitachi. By comparing it to another picture, it seems as if the Kamaitachi is running above water. Daigo Nakama, the reporter who took the picture introduces himself to the group, stating that he has come back to snap additional pictures to further strengthen his report, which, as Midori Koyanagi, a reporter from an competitor's magazine, states, has received complaints about possibly being fake.
Kouhei Oono, the owner's son says that he has seen the Kamaitachi, he even tried following it but started to drown in the water and fainted, after which he was laid in the hallway, drenched in water. Takami Oono, Kouhei's mother, the now widowed owner thanked Daigo for his published work, since it has increased the number of guests at the inn, eventhough people are now less likely to use the outdoor hot springs. Bonzou Oono, the owner's father-in-law suggested nyotaimori (Serving Sashimi/Sushi on a naked female body) to raise the number of guests at the inn, however the owner isn't really inclined to the idea and believes that he's just joking.

The guests ask her if she has anything valuable to sell, to at least cover expenses, to which the owner mentions an old sickle that matches the one seen in the picture. The group gets excited about it and wants to take a look at it. While they get going, Heiji asks Conan if he would delete the recording of him confessing his love, but Conan declines.
As the group finds the sickle in an old warehouse, the lightbulb breaks. Conan uses his wrist watch to illuminate the area, only to see that Heiji and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] have been cut on their arm and back of their hand, respectively and the reporter Midori on her face vertically.

Conan compares those epithets with his look, concluding that some might consider him a strong man for his physical abilities, some might see him as feminine because of his ponytail, and others might think of him as an old man since he's using a cane to walk around.

====Part 1====

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] walk down the street while talking about [[The Tragedy of the Red Woman|the red woman case]]. They ask her about her self defense techniques, to which she says that her brother used to send her tapes which she watched many times. She tells them that her mother still lives in the United States, which is a reason why she's now staying in a hotel, since [[Akai family's middle brother|her brother]] didn't want them to live together. Sonoko makes a remark about the cost of living in a hotel, but Masumi tells her that a friend of her father is taking care of it. The groups makes the decision to visit the hotel she is staying at, after which she cancels plans which she had to meet up with her brother.

They ride the elevator up to the 30th floor, where she is staying, and as they leave the elevator Sera mentions that she plans to move out of the hotel soon. In the floor's lobby they see three men apparently waiting. Sera explains to Suzuki that they are waiting for a manuscript of a famous author who also lives in the hotel. Keigo Hiura, a romance author, introduces himself to the group as they pass by his room. After a short exchange with Ran, he invites the waiting men into his suite to eat. Shortly after they gaze upon the food, further room service arrives bearing a wine bottle. Keigo then explains that the person who eats the most will receive the manuscript, which will be tested by weighing on a scale. More food is set to arrive; Beika sushi, pizza, chinese food and donuts. While they are eating, he will take a bath, so they should be cautious that he doesn't leave and do something. The girls are hanging out on the balcony and Conan is curiously looking around the suite. He spots a room which he wants to enter but Masumi interrupts him, saying that the room is in a mess and that he wouldn't want to trip over her panties. While the author's guests are leaving, so that he can finish writing the manuscript, they discuss his success and what an important role in it his assistant, Chiaki Minazuki, plays, who rents a room below his. Some magazines are suspecting the two of being a couple, two of the men state that their publishing houses have even received threats to keep that "man eating beast" away from him. The girls have ordered room service, pastry, sweets and tea to keep them cheerful while they discuss boys and love, with Conan, who joined them, questioning whether he should really be part of it. They then ask him whether he likes someone. Masumi, being very specific, asks if he likes a girl which he met a long time ago and can't forget. Sonoko believes he likes Ayumi, but Ran thinks it's Ai who has caught his eye. At 6 PM, as they are getting ready to leave, they hear the bellboy scream. Conan drops his backpack and the group runs towards the source of the scream. Suddenly a hand opens the door to Masumi's suite.

When they arrive at the lower storey, they see a confused bellboy and the victim, Chiaki, lying on the floor with strangle marks around her neck with Yoshikawa lines. Sera concludes that she has been dead for approximately two to three hours. Keigo arrives at the door with a Nichiuri publisher following him shortly after, who says that the author just wanted to buy cigarettes. After seeing her dead, the man assumes that it has to have something to do with the threats which they received. Hiura yells at him, asking why he hasn't told him anything, that he had the whole day to do it and that during that time he was just peacefully writing his novel. Conan and Masumi seem to believe that he is the culprit.

The bellboy tells the police that he has spotted her when he was bringing champagne which was ordered to be brought exactly at 6 PM. The key card to the room was on the floor and the door was slightly open. Keigo, who ordered the champagne had trouble with the last page of his novel, so thirty minutes before the whole happening he wanted to go for a smoke and stride through the floors, when he arrived at the scene he was just returning from buying a pack from the vending machine and was climbing the stairs which helps him come up with new ideas. Conan makes a remark that during that time the author wasn't doing anything in particular, finding it strange that he knew that she was murdered while he was writing his book, since it could have also happened afterwards. The author explains himself by saying that she didn't arrive at his room three hours earlier to give him some documents, and when he saw her corpse he assumed her death to be the cause why she didn't come. The publisher then explains, together with Hiura, that they were invited to his room and ate there with more takeout food arriving during the time the murder apparently happened and that there was no possibility for the author to just slip through the door and commit the crime, since the guests were the ones who paid for the food. At 4 PM the guests left and waited outside of the suite which they watched over during the whole time. Keigo came out only once to give a finished piece of work. The three manuscripts are almost finished, but he is stuck on the last page of the third one. At 5:30 PM he printed out everything, gave it them and went to buy cigarettes. The publisher was reading the manuscript when he heard the shout, Hiura then called him with the assumption that something had happened.
[[Juzo Megure|Megure]] questions the men if they know anyone who holds a grudge towards Chiaki, to which the publisher mentions the threats. Keigo says that there was suspicion of them being a couple since they were photographed together, which is also why his wife divorced him. He claims to have relied on her help a lot, saying that she was partially responsible for the book being finished, and that they even had plans to make her an author next year.

When leaving the scene, they see that a lot of people have gathered on the floor. Conan spots someone in the crowd who looks like Sera but appears to be a middle schooler. He tries to find her, but is interrupted by Ran. He immediately connects her with the girl from the mobile phone.
Sera tells the group that the author is the murderer, saying that the door couldn't have been used and that even though one would have to be very brave, the balcony is the only other way. She asks Conan whether he thinks the same to which he agrees.

====Part 2====

[[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] asks [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] if they have taken shampoo bottle caps away from the crime scene, but they haven't, since they only reached the door and didn't go further. He also mentions that somebody has thrown over the table, which landed in the victim's suitcase in the room with beer which was spilled in it. He mentions that the suitcase was quite large, even though there weren't many things in it - clothing, make up, a laptop, a bag and an old post card. The twenty year old post cast was written by Hiura, stating that if he was to use the story he would use the receipient's name for the protagonist. It was adressed to Outa Jun. Ran quickly mentions that Outa Jun is, in fact, the name of the protagonist in the author's book "The cellphone, the sea and I". She quickly explains the plot of the book to the group. A scratched mobile phone is found on the beach, a model which hasn't been released yet, with the message "How old are you?", after a few exchanges via messages between the person who found the phone and the one who was sending the messages, it can be concluded that the person is sending messages from the future. The answer to the question who was sending the messages was "The cellphone, the sea and I", which the protagonist at first didn't understand, but soon she replied with the exact message. The meaning of that message is to be revealed in the new book.

Takagi mentions that the author has invited the publishers to eat in his suite when they asked him for the manuscript, but, had he been in his position, he would've just bowed and apologised due to the pressure, but also says that it would be strange for Hiura to do something like that since he is bald. Conan asks Takagi if the author is already back in his room, but Takagi says that he's still with the police force as he's a suspect and the forensics aren't done with the room yet.

Hiura is getting angry at the police for not dropping their suspicion for him, stating that he simply couldn't have committed the murder since he was in his suite at the time of the murder, which the publisher confirms as they were eating there from 3 PM to 4.30 PM, also, the author says that he isn't James Bond to be able to use a rope to get to the lower storey via the balcony, pointing out further that the balcony is the line of sight from the table where the publishers were eating.

Conan and Masumi begin their reasoning to reveal the culprit and the trick he used.

=== Resolution ===
<spoiler>
The culprit is '''Keigo Hiura'''. Amongst many of the deliveries which he has ordered to his room, Minazuki came to the suite disguised as room service who delivered red wine. As it is usual for red wine to be decanted before serving, it wouldn't be too unusual to lead the service person into one's kitchen. The publisher mentioned that even though he saw the female deliverer arrive at the suite, since they were too focused on eating as much food as possible, they couldn't have noticed her leaving or staying in the suite.
Masumi explains that while the publishers were eating in the main room, Keigo has strangled the victim in the bath. He asked her to wait there for him and take off the hotel page uniform, since it wouldn't be easy to undress a corpse.
With the help of Takagi, they reconstruct Hiura's method of transporting the corpse to the lower suite. He had put her in the big suitcase after murdering her, and by using a rope and a special knot he easily, after some practice, was able to lower her on the lower balcony after the guests have left. Keigo would hand out manuscripts to the publishers to make it look like he was working on them. At 4.30 PM he left in order to buy cigarettes, but went to the victim's room to place her in front of the door for the bellboy to see her once he delivered the champagne. She explains that the reason beer was spilled in the suitcase was to diminish the smell of the corpse, her wet hair and shampoo. He has removed the shampoo bottle caps from his room since the victim had used them earlier and he wanted to replace them, which he didn't do in time, and he still carried them on him. As conclusive evidence Sera mentions the page uniform which they found on another floor in the trash, which could easily be tested for the culprit's and victim's DNA and sweat.

Keigo admits to the crime, saying that the "man eating" rumours about her were false, instead, she was the one who declined him many times since he was married. He also admits that the book wasn't his opus, but instead it was her's. He got the idea from an old post card, which Takagi mentioned earlier, and after mentioning it to Minazuki, she wanted to choose the title for the book and gave more and more input regarding the story. When he asked her why she did all of it she would just say that one day he would understand.

Conan explains the meaning behind the title. When "'''Denwa, umi watashi'''" (でんわ, うみわたし) (cellphone, sea and I) is translated from Japanese to English and the word order is switched, it can be read as "I, sea tel" which with Romaji pronounciation can be combined and read as "Aishiteru" meaning "I love you". The person who sent the cellphone back in the past was probably her future husband. Keigo says that it is a childish code, to which Conan replies that it doesn't surprise him since it was thought up by a child.

Conan further explains that Minazuki (水無月) is another term for the sixth month of the calendar, June, and that the "Aki" part from Chiaki (千秋) combined with it give Autumn. With both of the words combined and read again it can be pronounced as "'''Outa Jun'''" (おおたじゅん), concluding that Outa Jun has been Chiaki Minazuki's pen name.

On the way back Conan explains the meaning of the book name to [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]]. Suddenly he hears what appears to be a transmission from a bug he planted, but quickly it turns into an uncomfortable sound since Masami has destroyed the bug with a wrench. [[Unknown child|The unknown child]] mentions that she hasn't seen such a bug before, that its range isn't the greatest due to the battery but nonetheless it is interesting to be used in such a way. Sera asks the child if she likes him yet, to which she replies that she's still far away from trusting him, but should the moment arise, Masumi should tell him that she's her little sister from outside the territory.

In the floor's lobby they see three men apparently waiting. Sera explains to Suzuki that they are waiting for a manuscript of a famous author who also lives in the hotel. Keigo Hiura, a romance author, introduces himself to the group as they pass by his room. After a short exchange with Ran, he invites the waiting men into his suite to eat. Shortly after they gaze upon the food, further room service arrives bearing a wine bottle. Keigo then explains that the person who eats the most will receive the manuscript, which will be tested by weighing on a scale. More food is set to arrive; Beika sushi, pizza, chinese food and donuts. While they are eating, he will take a bath, so they should be cautious that he doesn't leave and do something. The girls are hanging out on the balcony and Conan is curiously looking around the suite. He spots a room which he wants to enter but Masumi interrupts him, saying that the room is in a mess and that he wouldn't want to trip over her panties. While the author's guests are leaving, so that he can finish writing the manuscript, they discuss his success and what an important role in it his assistant, Chiaki Minazuki, plays, who rents a room below his. Some magazines are suspecting the two of being a couple, two of the men state that their publishing houses have even received threats to keep that "man eating beast" away from him. The girls have ordered room service, pastry, sweets and tea to keep them cheerful while they discuss boys and love, with Conan, who joined them, questioning whether he should really be part of it. They then ask him whether he likes someone. Masumi, being very specific, asks if he likes a girl which he met a long time ago and can't forget. Sonoko believes he likes Ayumi, but Ran thinks it's Ai who has caught his eye. At 6 PM, as they are getting ready to leave, they hear the bellboy scream. Conan drops his backpack and the group runs towards the source of the scream. Suddenly a hand opens the door to Masumi's suite.

When they arrive at the lower storey, they see a confused bellboy and the victim, Chiaki, lying on the floor with strangle marks around her neck with Yoshikawa lines. Sera concludes that she has been dead for approximately two to three hours. Keigo arrives at the door with a Nichiuri publisher following him shortly after, who says that the author just wanted to buy cigarettes. After seeing her dead, the man assumes that it has to have something to do with the threats which they received. Hiura yells at him, asking why he hasn't told him anything, that he had the whole day to do it and that during that time he was just peacefully writing his novel. Conan and Masumi seem to believe that he is the culprit.

The bellboy tells the police that he has spotted her when he was bringing champagne which was ordered to be brought exactly at 6 PM. The key card to the room was on the floor and the door was slightly open. Keigo, who ordered the champagne had trouble with the last page of his novel, so thirty minutes before the whole happening he wanted to go for a smoke and stride through the floors, when he arrived at the scene he was just returning from buying a pack from the vending machine and was climbing the stairs which helps him come up with new ideas. Conan makes a remark that during that time the author wasn't doing anything in particular, finding it strange that he knew that she was murdered while he was writing his book, since it could have also happened afterwards. The author explains himself by saying that she didn't arrive at his room three hours earlier to give him some documents, and when he saw her corpse he assumed her death to be the cause why she didn't come. The publisher then explains, together with Hiura, that they were invited to his room and ate there with more takeout food arriving during the time the murder apparently happened and that there was no possibility for the author to just slip through the door and commit the crime, since the guests were the ones who paid for the food. At 4 PM the guests left and waited outside of the suite which they watched over during the whole time. Keigo came out only once to give a finished piece of work. The three manuscripts are almost finished, but he is stuck on the last page of the third one. At 5:30 PM he printed out everything, gave it them and went to buy cigarettes. The publisher was reading the manuscript when he heard the shout, Hiura then called him with the assumption that something had happened.
[[Juzo Megure|Megure]] questions the men if they know anyone who holds a grudge towards Chiaki, to which the publisher mentions the threats. Keigo says that there was suspicion of them being a couple since they were photographed together, which is also why his wife divorced him. He claims to have relied on her help a lot, saying that she was partially responsible for the book being finished, and that they even had plans to make her an author next year.

When leaving the scene, they see that a lot of people have gathered on the floor. Conan spots someone in the crowd who looks like Sera but appears to be a middle schooler. He tries to find her, but is interrupted by Ran. He immediately connects her with the girl from the mobile phone.
Sera tells the group that the author is the murderer, saying that the door couldn't have been used and that even though one would have to be very brave, the balcony is the only other way. She asks Conan whether he thinks the same to which he agrees.

====Part 2====

[[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] asks [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] if they have taken shampoo bottle caps away from the crime scene, but they haven't, since they only reached the door and didn't go further. He also mentions that somebody has thrown over the table, which landed in the victim's suitcase in the room with beer which was spilled in it. He mentions that the suitcase was quite large, even though there weren't many things in it - clothing, make up, a laptop, a bag and an old post card. The twenty year old post cast was written by Hiura, stating that if he was to use the story he would use the receipient's name for the protagonist. It was adressed to Outa Jun. Ran quickly mentions that Outa Jun is, in fact, the name of the protagonist in the author's book "The cellphone, the sea and I". She quickly explains the plot of the book to the group. A scratched mobile phone is found on the beach, a model which hasn't been released yet, with the message "How old are you?", after a few exchanges via messages between the person who found the phone and the one who was sending the messages, it can be concluded that the person is sending messages from the future. The answer to the question who was sending the messages was "The cellphone, the sea and I", which the protagonist at first didn't understand, but soon she replied with the exact message. The meaning of that message is to be revealed in the new book.

Takagi mentions that the author has invited the publishers to eat in his suite when they asked him for the manuscript, but, had he been in his position, he would've just bowed and apologised due to the pressure, but also says that it would be strange for Hiura to do something like that since he is bald. Conan asks Takagi if the author is already back in his room, but Takagi says that he's still with the police force as he's a suspect and the forensics aren't done with the room yet.

Hiura is getting angry at the police for not dropping their suspicion for him, stating that he simply couldn't have committed the murder since he was in his suite at the time of the murder, which the publisher confirms as they were eating there from 3 PM to 4.30 PM, also, the author says that he isn't James Bond to be able to use a rope to get to the lower storey via the balcony, pointing out further that the balcony is the line of sight from the table where the publishers were eating.

Conan and Masumi begin their reasoning to reveal the culprit and the trick he used.

=== Resolution ===

The culprit is '''Keigo Hiura'''. Amongst many of the deliveries which he has ordered to his room, Minazuki came to the suite disguised as room service who delivered red wine. As it is usual for red wine to be decanted before serving, it wouldn't be too unusual to lead the service person into one's kitchen. The publisher mentioned that even though he saw the female deliverer arrive at the suite, since they were too focused on eating as much food as possible, they couldn't have noticed her leaving or staying in the suite.
Masumi explains that while the publishers were eating in the main room, Keigo has strangled the victim in the bath. He asked her to wait there for him and take off the hotel page uniform, since it wouldn't be easy to undress a corpse.
With the help of Takagi, they reconstruct Hiura's method of transporting the corpse to the lower suite. He had put her in the big suitcase after murdering her, and by using a rope and a special knot he easily, after some practice, was able to lower her on the lower balcony after the guests have left. Keigo would hand out manuscripts to the publishers to make it look like he was working on them. At 4.30 PM he left in order to buy cigarettes, but went to the victim's room to place her in front of the door for the bellboy to see her once he delivered the champagne. She explains that the reason beer was spilled in the suitcase was to diminish the smell of the corpse, her wet hair and shampoo. He has removed the shampoo bottle caps from his room since the victim had used them earlier and he wanted to replace them, which he didn't do in time, and he still carried them on him. As conclusive evidence Sera mentions the page uniform which they found on another floor in the trash, which could easily be tested for the culprit's and victim's DNA and sweat.

Keigo admits to the crime, saying that the "man eating" rumours about her were false, instead, she was the one who declined him many times since he was married. He also admits that the book wasn't his opus, but instead it was her's. He got the idea from an old post card, which Takagi mentioned earlier, and after mentioning it to Minazuki, she wanted to choose the title for the book and gave more and more input regarding the story. When he asked her why she did all of it she would just say that one day he would understand.

Conan explains the meaning behind the title. When "'''Denwa, umi watashi'''" (でんわ, うみわたし) (cellphone, sea and I) is translated from Japanese to English and the word order is switched, it can be read as "I, sea tel" which with Romaji pronounciation can be combined and read as "Aishiteru" meaning "I love you". The person who sent the cellphone back in the past was probably her future husband. Keigo says that it is a childish code, to which Conan replies that it doesn't surprise him since it was thought up by a child.

Conan further explains that Minazuki (水無月) is another term for the sixth month of the calendar, June, and that the "Aki" part from Chiaki (千秋) combined with it give Autumn. With both of the words combined and read again it can be pronounced as "'''Outa Jun'''" (おおたじゅん), concluding that Outa Jun has been Chiaki Minazuki's pen name.

On the way back Conan explains the meaning of the book name to [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]]. Suddenly he hears what appears to be a transmission from a bug he planted, but quickly it turns into an uncomfortable sound since Masami has destroyed the bug with a wrench. [[Unknown child|The unknown child]] mentions that she hasn't seen such a bug before, that its range isn't the greatest due to the battery but nonetheless it is interesting to be used in such a way. Sera asks the child if she likes him yet, to which she replies that she's still far away from trusting him, but should the moment arise, Masumi should tell him that she's her little sister from outside the territory.

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] walk down the street while talking about [[The Tragedy of the Red Woman|the red woman case]]. They ask her about her self defense techniques, to which she says that her brother used to send her tapes which she watched many times. She tells them that her mother still lives in the United States, which is a reason why she's now staying in a hotel, since [[Akai family's middle brother|her brother]] didn't want them to live together. Sonoko makes a remark about the cost of living in a hotel, but Masumi tells her that a friend of her father is taking care of it. The groups makes the decision to visit the hotel she is staying at, after which she cancels plans which she had to meet up with her brother.

They ride the elevator up to the 30th floor, where she is staying, and as they leave the elevator Sera mentions that she plans to move out of the hotel soon. In the floor's lobby they see three men apparently waiting. Sera explains to Suzuki that they are waiting for a manuscript of a famous author who also lives in the hotel. Keigo Hiura, a romance author, introduces himself to the group as they pass by his room. After a short exchange with Ran, he invites the waiting men into his suite to eat. Shortly after they gaze upon the food, further room service arrives bearing a wine bottle. Keigo then explains that the person who eats the most will receive the manuscript, which will be tested by weighing on a scale. More food is set to arrive; Beika sushi, pizza, chinese food and donuts. While they are eating, he will take a bath, so they should be cautious that he doesn't leave and do something. The girls are hanging out on the balcony and Conan is curiously looking around the suite. He spots a room which he wants to enter but Masumi interrupts him, saying that the room is in a mess and that he wouldn't want to trip over her panties. While the author's guests are leaving, so that he can finish writing the manuscript, they discuss his success and what an important role in it his assistant, Chiaki Minazuki, plays, who rents a room below his. Some magazines are suspecting the two of being a couple, two of the men state that their publishing houses have even received threats to keep that "man eating beast" away from him. The girls have ordered room service, pastry, sweets and tea to keep them cheerful while they discuss boys and love, with Conan, who joined them, questioning whether he should really be part of it. They then ask him whether he likes someone. Masumi, being very specific, asks if he likes a girl which he met a long time ago and can't forget. Sonoko believes he likes Ayumi, but Ran thinks it's Ai who has caught his eye. At 6 PM, as they are getting ready to leave, they hear the bellboy scream. Conan drops his backpack and the group runs towards the source of the scream. Suddenly a hand opens the door to Masumi's suite.

When they arrive at the lower storey, they see a confused bellboy and the victim, Chiaki, lying on the floor with strangle marks around her neck with Yoshikawa lines. Sera concludes that she has been dead for approximately two to three hours. Keigo arrives at the door with a Nichiuri publisher following him shortly after, who says that the author just wanted to buy cigarettes. After seeing her dead, the man assumes that it has to have something to do with the threats which they received. Hiura yells at him, asking why he hasn't told him anything, that he had the whole day to do it and that during that time he was just peacefully writing his novel. Conan and Masumi seem to believe that he is the culprit.

The bellboy tells the police that he has spotted her when he was bringing champagne which was ordered to be brought exactly at 6 PM. The key card to the room was on the floor and the door was slightly open. Keigo, who ordered the champagne had trouble with the last page of his novel, so thirty minutes before the whole happening he wanted to go for a smoke and stride through the floors, when he arrived at the scene he was just returning from buying a pack from the vending machine and was climbing the stairs which helps him come up with new ideas. Conan makes a remark that during that time the author wasn't doing anything in particular, finding it strange that he knew that she was murdered while he was writing his book, since it could have also happened afterwards. The author explains himself by saying that she didn't arrive at his room three hours earlier to give him some documents, and when he saw her corpse he assumed her death to be the cause why she didn't come. The publisher then explains, together with Hiura, that they were invited to his room and ate there with more takeout food arriving during the time the murder apparently happened and that there was no possibility for the author to just slip through the door and commit the crime, since the guests were the ones who paid for the food. At 4 PM the guests left and waited outside of the suite which they watched over during the whole time. Keigo came out only once to give a finished piece of work. The three manuscripts are almost finished, but he is stuck on the last page of the third one. At 5:30 PM he printed out everything, gave it them and went to buy cigarettes. The publisher was reading the manuscript when he heard the shout, Hiura then called him with the assumption that something had happened.
[[Juzo Megure|Megure]] questions the men if they know anyone who holds a grudge towards Chiaki, to which the publisher mentions the threats. Keigo says that there was suspicion of them being a couple since they were photographed together, which is also why his wife divorced him. He claims to have relied on her help a lot, saying that she was partially responsible for the book being finished, and that they even had plans to make her an author next year.

When leaving the scene, they see that a lot of people have gathered on the floor. Conan spots someone in the crowd who looks like Sera but appears to be a middle schooler. He tries to find her, but is interrupted by Ran. He immediately connects her with the girl from the mobile phone.
Sera tells the group that the author is the murderer, saying that the door couldn't have been used and that even though one would have to be very brave, the balcony is the only other way. She asks Conan whether he thinks the same to which he agrees.

====Part 1====

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] walk down the street while talking about [[The Tragedy of the Red Woman|the red woman case]]. They ask her about her self defense techniques, to which she says that her brother used to send her tapes which she watched many times. She tells them that her mother still lives in the United States, which is a reason why she's now staying in a hotel, since [[Akai family's middle brother|her brother]] didn't want them to live together. Sonoko makes a remark about the cost of living in a hotel, but Masumi tells her that a friend of her father is taking care of it. The groups makes the decision to visit the hotel she is staying at, after which she cancels plans which she had to meet up with her brother.

They ride the elevator up to the 30th floor, where she is staying, and as they leave the elevator Sera mentions that she plans to move out of the hotel soon. In the floor's lobby they see three men apparently waiting. Sera explains to Suzuki that they are waiting for a manuscript of a famous author who also lives in the hotel. Keigo Hiura, a romance author, introduces himself to the group as they pass by his room. After a short exchange with Ran, he invites the waiting men into his suite to eat. Shortly after they gaze upon the food, further room service arrives bearing a wine bottle. Keigo then explains that the person who eats the most will receive the manuscript, which will be tested by weighing on a scale. More food is set to arrive; Beika sushi, pizza, chinese food and donuts. While they are eating, he will take a bath, so they should be cautious that he doesn't leave and do something. The girls are hanging out on the balcony and Conan is curiously looking around the suite. He spots a room which he wants to enter but Masumi interrupts him, saying that the room is in a mess and that he wouldn't want to trip over her panties. While the author's guests are leaving, so that he can finish writing the manuscript, they discuss his success and what an important role in it his assistant, Chiaki Minazuki, plays, who rents a room below his. Some magazines are suspecting the two of being a couple, two of the men state that their publishing houses have even received threats to keep that "man eating beast" away from him. The girls have ordered room service, pastry, sweets and tea to keep them cheerful while they discuss boys and love, with Conan, who joined them, questioning whether he should really be part of it. They then ask him whether he likes someone. Masumi, being very specific, asks if he likes a girl which he met a long time ago and can't forget. Sonoko believes he likes Ayumi, but Ran thinks it's Ai who has caught his eye. At 6 PM, as they are getting ready to leave, they hear the bellboy scream. Conan drops his backpack and the group runs towards the source of the scream. Suddenly a hand opens the door to Masumi's suite.

When they arrive at the lower storey, they see a confused bellboy and the victim, Chiaki, lying on the floor with strangle marks around her neck with Yoshikawa lines. Sera concludes that she has been dead for approximately two to three hours. Keigo arrives at the door with a Nichiuri publisher following him shortly after, who says that the author just wanted to buy cigarettes. After seeing her dead, the man assumes that it has to have something to do with the threats which they received. Hiura yells at him, asking why he hasn't told him anything, that he had the whole day to do it and that during that time he was just peacefully writing his novel. Conan and Masumi seem to believe that he is the culprit.

The bellboy tells the police that he has spotted her when he was bringing champagne which was ordered to be brought exactly at 6 PM. The key card to the room was on the floor and the door was slightly open. Keigo, who ordered the champagne had trouble with the last page of his novel, so thirty minutes before the whole happening he wanted to go for a smoke and stride through the floors, when he arrived at the scene he was just returning from buying a pack from the vending machine and was climbing the stairs which helps him come up with new ideas. Conan makes a remark that during that time the author wasn't doing anything in particular, finding it strange that he knew that she was murdered while he was writing his book, since it could have also happened afterwards. The author explains himself by saying that she didn't arrive at his room three hours earlier to give him some documents, and when he saw her corpse he assumed her death to be the cause why she didn't come. The publisher then explains, together with Hiura, that they were invited to his room and ate there with more takeout food arriving during the time the murder apparently happened and that there was no possibility for the author to just slip through the door and commit the crime, since the guests were the ones who paid for the food. At 4 PM the guests left and waited outside of the suite which they watched over during the whole time. Keigo came out only once to give a finished piece of work. The three manuscripts are almost finished, but he is stuck on the last page of the third one. At 5:30 PM he printed out everything, gave it them and went to buy cigarettes. The publisher was reading the manuscript when he heard the shout, Hiura then called him with the assumption that something had happened.
[[Juzo Megure|Megure]] questions the men if they know anyone who holds a grudge towards Chiaki, to which the publisher mentions the threats. Keigo says that there was suspicion of them being a couple since they were photographed together, which is also why his wife divorced him. He claims to have relied on her help a lot, saying that she was partially responsible for the book being finished, and that they even had plans to make her an author next year.

When leaving the scene, they see that a lot of people have gathered on the floor. Conan spots someone in the crowd who looks like Sera but appears to be a middle schooler. He tries to find her, but is interrupted by Ran. He immediately connects her with the girl from the mobile phone.
Sera tells the group that the author is the murderer, saying that the door couldn't have been used and that even though one would have to be very brave, the balcony is the only other way. She asks Conan whether he thinks the same to which he agrees.
