== Personality ==
Mary seems very mature and direct, especially when speaking to Masumi. She seems hesitant to trust others at the moment and is being extremely cautious about who knows about her. Currently because of her cautiousness, she and Masumi have been moving from one hotel to another to keep their location hidden.

She is proud of her British heritage.

Like her eldest son she also seems to be clumsy at recognizing the motives behind the feelings of others and how to interact positively with others. In dealing with her children, Mary seems to be strict and cold, treating her children more like coworkers than a family. Shukichi seemed to be more nurturing to Masumi than her mom. When Mary was 10 years younger, she came to physical blows with her eldest son, Shuichi, since he lied to her about his reasons to study in the USA and planned to join the FBI and investigate her husbands' incident. They both went as far as attacking each other's faces, leaving black eyes. She also thought Shuichi, who is a rather cold person as well, would make a good replacement father figure for Masumi and Shukichi. However, soon after she realized that Shuichi was driven by the same sense of curiosity as his father and he would go his own way. To her daughter Masumi, she acts secretively by hiding a lot of important information from Masumi, such as turning off the TV when Shuukichi shogi match was shown, and possibly some other whereabouts of the Black Organization and the Akai family overall. Her continued mistrust of Conan is another example of her general denseness at understanding others, since it is long past the point where she should be able to tell that Conan's motives and pursuit of justice are genuine.

But she does express joy at Shukichi's victory for becoming the seven-crowned Shogi master. It indicates that she does care for her children. Additionally, when Mary easily sees through Vermouth's disguise of Tsutomu, she appears genuinely distraught at the fact that her husband is apparently dead and even cries and didn't seem to be concerned about her fate as long as Masumi remains save, showing regardless of her tough attitude, she truly cares for her family. The apparent death of Tsutomu may have contributed to her hardened personality.

== Appearance ==

Mary is a girl of middle school age (12-15) with light colored, curly, neck length hair. The child has eyes similar to those of [[Masumi Sera]] and [[Shuichi Akai]]. In her appearance in File 877, she was shown wearing a high-neck pleated top, hoodie jacket, and hat. Like all the other manga characters, the color of her eyes is supposed to be blue, as seen in the keyhole of manga volume 83.

In her varying appearances, Mary's eyes have been drawn slightly differently. In her original and current chapter appearances she seems to have an extra lash on the top of her eye, where as in the Pool case and [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]'s comparison of her and [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]]'s eyes in the Department store case she does not have that extra lash.

== Skills ==

Mary seems to know about several types of wire taps. When she and Masumi find Conan's wire tap in their room, she says that she hasn't seen that type before. She also describes the components of it such as its battery life and performance. She spoke in a similar fashion about Conan's voice changer after she gets a chance to use it herself.

She has demonstrated the ability to hang from a balcony by a thin rope/wire and hug the wall like a ninja. She has the strength to vault back up on to the balcony, much like [[Vermouth]] did in the New York case.

10 years ago she already had the ability to fight well enough that she landed a "knife-hand strike" to her son Shuichi's face, who at the time had already been practicing Jeet Kune Do. In the present, even with her small body, she was able to take down a fully grown man by herself. Conan described the damage as "a copped blow to a vital spot, similar to the techniques used by the secret service".

Masumi asks Conan to find her cellphone by calling it with his. When he does he notices the call background screen is a child with eye bags similar to those of [[Shuichi Akai]] and [[Masumi Sera]]. He remarks that the girl looks similar to Masumi. Earlier in the case she only mentioned having two brothers; a mother; and a father, so Conan suspects Masumi was intentionally trying to show him the child for some reason.

When Ran, Sonoko, and Conan visit Masumi's apartment, Mary is shown opening Masumi's door as Conan, Masumi, Sonoko, and Ran rush to investigate a crime. It is implied she was hiding in Masumi's bedroom while the other three were in the dining area because Masumi asks Conan not to enter her bedroom. Mary later goes downstairs to the scene of the crime where she is seen by Conan. At some point off screen Conan leaves behind a bug in Masumi's room. After the case is solved, Mary is shown examining Conan's bug along with Masumi, who had found it and crushed it. Mary comments on the quality of the performance of the bug itself and that she has never seen one like it. When Masumi asks if Mary has taken a liking to Conan she says that it is still early to trust Conan, and asks Masumi to introduce her as "{{nihongo|the little sister from ''outside the domain''|領域外の妹|ryōiki-gai no imōto}}", should Conan question her in the future.

Mary is interested in [[Shukichi Haneda|Shukichi]]'s shogi match. When Masumi returns to the hotel room in the middle of the case while Mary is napping, she turns on the TV and sees the shogi match. Later after the case is solved, Masumi enters the room for a second time to see Mary turning off the TV. Presumably she saw the end of the match and was happy at Shukichi's victory, as was Subaru Okiya, whose identity was revealed in the case before this one, to be Shuichi.

Mary is waiting for [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] to visit her and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] in their hotel room. She expresses her still-lingering concern of trusting Conan, even though she thinks he is bright enough. Mary does comment that if anything were to go wrong they would have to move hotels again. Her talk with him alone is put on hold, however, because [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] have invited themselves in accompanying Conan in order to enjoy the hotel's pool. As Conan, Ran, and Sonoko head back home after the case is solved, Ran turns around and sees Masumi talking to her. Ran gets the feeling that she has seen that child before.

[[Masumi Sera]] is at Ramen Ogura with Conan, Sonoko and Ran. [[Katsumasa Ogura]] asks Masumi (mistakenly calling her "Mari") if she's going to take the same food to her apartment again. Conan implies that Masumi could be giving food to someone she's letting stay in her apartment, making a clear reference to Mary, but she jokes saying that it's for her secret boyfriend. At the end of the case it is revealed that Ogura had found a handkerchief that Masumi had left behind that said "Mary" on it in English. Ogura had confused the English name with the Japanese name "Mari". Conan believes that the handkerchief may be related to the child as well.

Conan thinks about Mary, "the little sister from outside the domain looks a lot like Sera, no wait, more than that girl resembling Sera..." (領域外の妹と名乗る… 世良によく似た… いや…　あの子世良というより…‥ ). Conan also thinks to himself that the child's name is probably Mary. At the end of the case Haibara tried to wipe some of the makeup off of her face in the bathroom, but she missed some just below her left eye. The left over makeup made it look like she had the same eye bags as Shuichi, Masumi, and Mary. This causes Conan to make a connection between her and Mary.

During the investigation Conan runs into Masumi's hotel room and checks the balcony as that is the only place a person would hide. However, Mary has hidden herself by anchoring herself and hiding by hugging the wall underneath the balcony. Conan takes a picture of a car parked on the ground floor below the balconies and decides to take a snapshot of the underside of the balcony, just to be certain. Masumi rushes to interrupt him on some pretense. Conan then drops his voice-changer on his way back inside. Mary picks it up, and later uses it in place of Conan to solve the case. When the culprit tries to flee by leaping over the balcony of the murder room over to their room, Mary takes him down single handedly using skills comparable to that of the secret service. Masumi rushes after Conan who has followed the suspect, calling out "Mama". Once Conan has left, Mary and Masumi discuss what information the Soul Detective had, which was that before Kohji's death, Asaka was seen holding a hand mirror and thinks that it means that Asaka is a woman. Mary warns Masumi about Conan saying that "it is like encountering a demon in the darkness" (暗がりに鬼を繋ぐが如く), and that he is not the same boy they met 10 years ago. Conan goes home and looks at the snapshot he has taken of the underside of the balcony. He theorizes that Mary could have been Asaka. Later Gin uses the same demon line that Mary used to refer to Kogoro.

Hearing about poison, Mary started to remember her shrinking moment. Several months ago, Mary was supposed to meet her husband at Vauxhall Bridge in London, [[Tsutomu Akai]] appeared in front of her, however Mary realised that he isn't her husband after giving him false informations about her daughter. Tsutomu is revealed to be [[Vermouth]] in disguise, who intended to poison her with [[APTX 4869]]. Vermouth feeds Mary the drug with her mouth directly, which is created by her [[Elena Miyano|sister]]. Mary then jumps into the river due to the effect of the drug being very instant. After Mary shrinked, she returned to Sera, explaining to her the whole situation. Later, Mary and Sera witnessed Conan proclaiming himself as Holmes' apprentice during Minerva's match on TV, and remembered the same proclamation of Shinichi 10 years ago. The two realised that Conan is Shinichi who shrunk the same way as Mary, however, he has a way of returning as Shinichi to board a plane to London. Since then, Mary ordered Masumi to get closer to him, in order get their hands on the antidote.

Although much of their relationship remains unknown, she knew her husband enough to easily see through Vermouth's disguise and in contrast to her distant and hardened exterior, the fact that Tsutomu was possibly dead was enough to cause her to cry, showing she cared deeply for him.

Akemi Miyano, the oldest child of [[Elena Miyano]] and [[Atsushi Miyano]], was born into the Black Organization approximately some 25 years before the current timeline.<ref>She was close to 5 when she visited Sohei Dejima's house with her parents 20 years ago in [[Volume 41]], File 423: "A Mystery Left by a Visitor"</ref> Unlike her younger sister [[Shiho Miyano]], Akemi was never considered a high ranking member of the Organization and managed to live a mostly normal life, traveling about freely and going to school and college like normal, despite being watched over by the organization. Both of her parents later died an accident while she was young, orphaning Akemi and Shiho. Although her sister became a highly ranked codenamed scientist, Akemi remained in close contact with Shiho and served as her lifeline to normalcy. She only involved herself into the organization to try get Shiho out of it.

Some five years before the current timeline, Akemi met undercover FBI agent [[Shuichi Akai]] who was using the alias Dai Moroboshi. He planned to date Akemi in order to get close to Shiho Miyano so he could gain standing within the Black Organization as part of his mission. Although Shuichi initially was just using her, they wound up really falling in love. Akemi discovered Shuichi was an FBI agent and guessed his plan, but kept this knowledge secret even from him. Three years later, Shuichi's true allegiance was uncovered and he was ejected from the Organization. Akemi then revealed that she knew his secret, and that she wished to leave the Organization and date him seriously.

This did not happen because Akemi was unwilling to leave without her sister, and the Black Organization would not allow Shiho to go because her work on the [[APTX 4869]] project was extremely valuable. Although Shuichi stopped contacting Akemi for her safety, the Organization was planning to get rid of her anyway because her connection to Shuichi was considered a serious risk. The Organization could not simply eliminate her though because it would jeopardize Shiho's loyalty. The Black Organization finally put their plan to kill Akemi into motion two years later just after [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] had shrunk into [[Conan Edogawa|Conan Edogawa]].

== Personality ==
Akemi had a friendly, kind, gentle cheerful and outgoing personality and a good sense of humor. When she was a child, she was naive, mischievous and native; she hid the work tools of her father's friends and happily watched as they panicked, however, she only wanted them not to work hard anymore. As an adult, she was a loving, caring person well at odds with the rest of the Black Organization. She and her sister Shiho were very close although they met each other rarely, they often shared with each other the stories. Shuichi says Akemi was always crying in the dark while pretending to be strong. This tells that she is a weak girl and does not want to annoy the others.
She is sensitive and may have many sad stories or secrets which she does not tell outside.

The Organization's plan to silence Akemi was to pretend to make a deal with her; in exchange for a successful one billion yen bank robbery, [[Gin]] told Akemi she and Shiho could go free. The Organization thought Akemi would surely fail and thus they would have an acceptable reason to kill her. Akemi hired two partners to help her. Kenzo Hirota, a Tokyoite with no family, would be the get-away driver, because he used to work as a taxi driver. An unnamed giant man would serve as muscle. The day before the mission, she send a text to Akai, explaining the situation and asked if he would want to go out with her for real, should she manage to get out of the organization.

Akemi and her two partners successfully pull off the robbery, killing a guard in the process. Unfortunately, Kenzo Hirota then backstabs Akemi and the giant by running away with the billion yen. In order to track him down, Akemi and her partner approach different detectives pretending to be Kenzo's relatives. Akemi creates the alias Hirota Masami, borrowing from [[The Girl from the Black Organization and the University Professor Murder Case|a professor friend's name]], and changing her hairstyle so she appears to be a high school girl from Yamagata looking for her missing "father".<ref>Manga [[Volume 2]], file 4 (13): "The Missing Man "</ref> Akemi approaches the then-not-well-known Detective [[Kogoro]] at his office and convinces him to help her. Kogoro begins to search for the man's via his contacts.

Sometime while Kogoro is searching for Kenzo, Akemi meets with Shiho at a restaurant and describes Conan to her. Akemi tells Shiho that Conan lives in the [[Mouri Detective Agency]] near the [[Setting|Kudo house]] that Shiho had visited earlier (as part of a search to ensure Shinichi was really killed by APTX 4869) and that he has the composure of an adult. Shiho then asks Akemi to tell her about the dangerous mission that Akemi had just performed, but Akemi tells Shiho she is fine and that she should stop working on that drug and try to get a boyfriend instead.

With Conan and Ran's help, Kogoro finds Kenzo and "Hirota Masami" pretends to be overjoyed at their "reunion". Later that night, Akemi and the giant man confront Kenzo to take back the money. A fight breaks out between the two men, resulting in the giant strangling Kenzo to death against Akemi's wishes. Akemi and the giant hang Kenzo's corpse from a rope to make it appear like a suicide, grab the cash, and leave for a hotel. Akemi slips some pills given to her by Gin into the giant's drink so she could take the money, unaware that they were laced with cyanide and would kill him instantly. With both of her partners dead, she hides the suitcases of money at the hotel's front desk and takes a taxi to meet Gin and [[Vodka]] at the shipping yard, with [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] following closely behind.<ref name=manga>Detective Conan Manga Files 13 to 16</ref>

When she arrives at the meeting place, she tells Gin that she will only tell him where the money is after he frees her sister, but Gin goes back on his word, saying her sister is far too valuable to let go of. Akemi hid the tools of the workers causing her to unknowingly prevent a murder from occurring. Closer to the present day, around one week prior to her death, Akemi returned and planted tapes created by Elena for Shiho, in the same spot that she had hid the tools years before. She told one of the workers that she would be back with-in the week and bring her sister to meet them.

In the anime, she works at a bank under the name Masami Hirota and pulls an inside job. == Relationships analysis ==
=== Shuichi Akai ===

[[Shuichi Akai]] and Akemi Miyano were lovers while he was infiltrating the [[Black Organization]]. Shuichi's original mission was to date Akemi Miyano in order to meet Shiho Miyano. Shuichi used Shiho's influence to gain rank in the Organization, intending to become trusted enough to meet with high level agents so the FBI could capture one for questioning. As [[James Black]] later recalls, although Shuichi's relationship with Akemi was merely a stepping stone, Shuichi actually fell in love with Akemi, and considered her his real girlfriend. Because of this he broke up with the woman (and felow agent) he dated until then, [[Jodie Starling]]; he cared deeply for Jodie, but since he had fallen for Akemi he didn't want to keep two parallel relationships.

Sometime later, Akemi develops the suspicion that Shuichi really wasn't who he claimed to be. Later, due to a massive error by [[Andre Camel]], Shuichi is discovered by the rest of the Organization to be an FBI agent, leading to his expulsion. Shuichi confirms that he is an FBI agent to her. To Shuichi's surprise, Akemi doesn't seemed surprised by this, so Shuichi asks her why she never said anything about her suspicions that she was being used by him before, and Akemi hints it is because she loves him. Initially, the Organization couldn't do anything about Akemi because they needed the loyalty of her sister, but two years later they decided that the risk of her contact with Shuichi was too much. They decided to create a situation where they could eliminate her by having her do a bank heist she was supposed to fail. Sometime near the day of the heist, Akemi sent Shuichi a long text message, asking him if he wants to be her real boyfriend when she is finally free from the Organization. After the heist, Akemi is killed by [[Gin]], and it is unknown how Shuichi responded if at all. Shuichi treasures her final text message, and keeps it in his phone many months after Akemi's death.

How Akemi and Shuichi met in the manga is unknown, but in the anime, Shuichi Akai originally met Akemi by an intentional accident. She accidentally hit him with her car when he deliberately walked into the street in front of her in order to be hit by her.<ref>Episode 497</ref> Akemi helped take him to the hospital, watching over him until he was better. When he woke up, he felt no anger over what she did, and even asked for her name, to which a very flustered Akemi replied, while he told her his fake name: Dai Moroboshi. After this they began dating.

=== Ai Haibara ===
Despite the fact that they couldn't see each other often, Akemi and her sister Shiho were very close to each other. Akemi had constantly tried to encourage the studious and workaholic Shiho to relax and find herself a boyfriend.

Akemi's death scarred her sister deeply. Much of Akemi's personality Shiho finds personified in [[Ran Mouri]] - perhaps this is the main reason why Shiho was first reluctant to accept her (due to the still-fresh pain of her loss), but eventually came to consider her as a surrogate sister.

Akemi seems to have known [[Rei Furuya]], and described him and his relationship with Shuichi to Shiho.This is not revealed yet. In the flashback during [[The Unsolved Cocktail Case]], it tells that Akemi and Rei met and know each other when they were children. They might be close. Akemi cared about Rei. However, according to Aoyama Gosho, Akemi did not remember Rei when she is a adult. This implies that when meeting each other in the black organization, Akemi did not realize that Bourbon was Rei. This protected the true person of Rei.

In the text message that Akemi Miyano sent to [[Shuichi Akai]] before she commits the bank robbery, aside from the main content, there is also a '''"P.S."''' shown below it, at the bottom left corner of his cell phone's screen. However, what Akemi wrote ''under'' that part (the things she wanted to say in the P.S.) has never been revealed to the readers (watchers).

There is a common speculation among the fans that Akemi has asked [[Shuichi Akai]] to protect the safety of her sister, [[Shiho Miyano]], in case the robbery she planned ends up in failure, or that the [[Black Organization]] decides to betray their promise, which is to let her and her sister leave if she succeeds. It is important to note that in the Manga File 810, Shuichi, while disguising as [[Subaru Okiya]], has mentioned in his mind about the promise he made with a certain '''"her"''', because of which he refuses to make [[Ai Haibara]] go with him by force.<ref>[[Volume 77|Volume 77, File 810, Page 16]]</ref> This woman whom Shuichi was referring to might have been his late girlfriend Akemi, and his promise with her might be relevant to the hidden content of the mysterious P.S.
