Situation
One night, Conan, Haibara, and the Detective Boys are on fire safety patrol. Conan and Haibara discuss about the two arson cases that happened four and two days ago.
InfoBox Crime
Out of nowhere, everyone on patrol sees a man run toward the direction of a fire. They arrive at a park to see a jungle gym in flames and suspect that man is the arsonist. Genta tells everyone he knows that man.

The next day, the five children hide at an alley near a bento shop, waiting for that man, who, according to Genta, always buys an extra large seaweed lunch at that same shop, where he orders his eel lunches. Conan and Haibara are bothered by the fact that these three arson cases occurred at the same locations - at playgrounds - as the arson cases from last year. The ones from last year lasted for two weeks. The fourth arson case last year resulted in the death of a drunk office worker, who was sleeping while wrapped up in a construction tarp. After that, the cases stopped occurring until recently.
InfoBox Crime
The man from yesterday arrives at the bento shop to order his usual seaweed lunch, and as he heads back home, the kids secretly follow him. They sit out on the streets, spying the man in his apartment for the whole day. At night, the man walks out of his house, and they quietly follow him again; unfortunately, they lost him because a train passed by and stopped them. Conan and Haibara decide to head the park where the fourth arson case from last year took place, since the next arson will most likely take place there, and the Detective Boys follow. At the park, they see a sheet draped over the slides on fire; meanwhile, an unknown person runs past the park.
InfoBox Crime
The sheet is blown up into the air and is about to hit the Detective Boys when suddenly the man they spied on before tackles them, allowing them to barely avoid it. Because of this, the man lost sight of that person who just ran past the playground again, just like yesterday. For some reason, he seems to be paying attention to all of these recent arson cases. After some police investigation and questioning from Detective Takagi, everyone heads home.

The next day, the man heads out from his home, hoping to not see the kids again; unfortunately, they were waiting just outside. They all head to Sumire Park, the site of the first arson case, to investigate the chain of arson cases. This year, a side of a seesaw was burned. On a Beika Real Estate commercial sign, the kanji 戸 is circled in red.

Next, they head to Tsutsuji Park, the location of the second arson case. This year, an arched bridge was burned. On a sign post of a ramen restaurant, the character へ is circled in red as well.

Then, they arrive at Himawari Park, the place where the third arson case took place. Last year, a playground horse was burned. On a caution sign for pedestrians, the kanji 歩 is circled in red, too. After some investigation in the park, the man takes them to an eel restaurant. As the Detective Boys enjoy their eel rice, the man tells them he will order some eel liver soup; however, Conan sees the order menu and a 10000 yen bill and realizes he lied and already left the restaurant. He runs outside, but the man is nowhere to be seen; the man baited the kids here so that he can split off with them. He heads to a factory that is closed today.

Meanwhile, Conan reads the news articles regarding the arson cases again and then immediately leads Haibara and the Detective Boys to the park where the fourth arson case took place. Conan and Haibara head to top of the apartment building near the park and see the character ニ circled in red on a sign labeled "Ninja Fortress". After seeing this, Conan figures out what is going on.

Resolution
<spoiler>
Conan tells Haibara and the Detective Boys that those characters circled in red - 戸, へ, 歩, and ニ - represent a countdown. These characters can be read as to, he, ho, and ni, which can spell out いろはにほへと (irohanihoheto) backwards; in other words, there will be a fifth arson. They look at all the equipment in this playground and learn they were all produced by Iroha Toys; this is probably the same for all of the burned equipment in the other parks. Conan realizes the fifth arson will take place at a Iroha Toys factory located nearby, and they head there immediately.

At the front gate, Conan sees a van with a logo of that bento shop Genta goes to buy his eel lunch. They look into a window of the factory and suddenly see a person holding a lit-up torch. Conan leaps over the gate and charges into the factory, where he sees oil spilled all over the place. The arsonist tries to throw the torch at the oil, but Conan, with his soccer ball, knocks the torch out the window and reveals to everyone that the culprit is Harue Yatabe. She is the only one who could have driven that van to the factory.

The man also figures out she is the arsonist. When he bought seaweed lunch a few days ago, he grabbed the change from her hand, and on his way home, he smelled his hand and detected kerosene, leading him to guess she is the culprit. Today, he went to the factory and saw her inside the van with the shop's logo, confirming his hunch. As she walked into the factory carrying two oil tanks, he sneaked in, but she used a pipe to knock him unconscious. Afterwards, he was tied up and gagged until the kids arrived.

One and a half year ago, a child was badly injured at a playground because of a defect in a equipment made in this factory. Iroha Toys blamed it all on her, the factory manager at the time, fired her, and pretended to know nothing about it. She set up the countdown to get revenge on the company and make them regret what they did to her.

As the police escort her to the station, the man turns himself in to Detective Takagi. He witnessed last year's fourth fire and committed the robbery which happened in the apartment building near that playground. Since then, he stopped robbing, but because he was afraid of being arrested, he did not report this robbery; he pretended to be unaware of that arson. However, he regretted doing this, as the arsonist would have been caught sooner if he confessed his crime at that time. That was why he wanted to catch the arsonist himself and then turn himself in to the police.
* It would have made more sense for Inspector Yuminaga from the arson division to have appeared instead of Detective Takagi from the homicide division. However, due to the death that occurred, Takagi might have been called out there in case there was a tie to a murder.
Situation
On a rainy night at the Mouri Detective Agency, Detective Chiba arrives and begs Kogoro for help. He wants Kogoro to help him to find a woman that he believes is in danger.

Chiba swiftly explains that recently, he's been seeing a woman at the Ikitsuke Café. The woman named Mio Ashida said she felt like something dangerous will occur. She gave him threatening letters she had received from someone who had recently been released from prison. When questioned, it was revealed that they had been coming for nearly a year and that she had changed jobs and moved because she was afraid of them stalking her. However, recently, she felt she was being watched, thus prompting her to tell Chiba. He had said that if she saw the person, or anyone suspicious, she must tell him immediately. However, when Chiba went to the restroom, Mio left. Concerned, Chiba questioned the owner who said the customer left, and seemed upset or afraid. As Chiba went to follow her, he grabbed an umbrella and realized that he had hers, meaning that in her rush, she had grabbed his.

When Chiba was about to cross the street, a red car came and Chiba quickly got out of the way. He saw a suspicious person wearing a hat and sunglasses in the driver's seat. Chiba felt that it wasn't careless driving, but rather an attempt on his life, and that the driver mistook him for the woman due to having her umbrella. Since Chiba did not get her address before she left, he was not able to find her right away, and due to no evidence, he was unable to do it through the police headquarters, which is why Chiba came to Mouri Detective Agency for help. Since she came to the cafe often, Conan proposed the idea of searching nearby areas, as she likely lived near by.

So now, Conan, Ran, Kogoro, and Detective Chiba went all around the places to search for Mio. Meanwhile at an apartment, a student named Takuya Murakami is getting annoyed by someone else on the second floor due to them playing the TV at a high volume. Suddenly, Murakami heard a loud thump from above and a scream from a woman.

Detective Chiba receives a call while searching for Mio. The call was that a young woman was involved in a murder case at a nearby apartment. When Chiba, Kogoro, Ran, and Conan went to the apartment, they found a red car which was the one that almost ran over Chiba. They went inside and went to the second floor of the apartment. Inspector Megure and Detective Takagi are also there. It seems they found the dead body.

In the room, a man was on the floor, dead from blunt force trauma to the head. Beside him was the hat and sunglasses Chiba saw on the driver that nearly ran him over, and on the other side of the room, was the woman, Mio. At first relieved to find her alive, Takagi said that she's the perpetrator, much to Chiba's horror. Both groups share their story, with Takagi finally explaining what happened.

The incident occurred forty minutes ago, at 9:30 PM. Murakami that lives below said that he heard the commotion, so he came to check. He discovered the dead body and Mio, who was next to the corpse. Murakami then called the police. The victim was a man named Yoshizumi Karashima and was released from prison three days ago, after being kept there for a year due to a traffic accident. During the incident, there was a drunk driver that broke the guard rail and fell into the lake. Of the two, the driver died, while the other only received light injuries, but were sentenced one year of prison for allowing a drunk to drive. The driver had been Mio's brother, and the deceased, Karashima, was the other one in the car.

Mio thinks it's a lie that her brother was driving due to a past incident her brother had with drunk driving that made him swear to not ever go behind the wheel again. She believes that the person that was really driving was Karashima. The driver that died was indeed her older brother, Toshiaki Ashida. Karashima said that her brother was the one driving, but she could not believe his story. She filed serveral objections to the court, but all of them were rejected. Chiba has no doubt that it must be revenge, so he showed the letters written by Karashima when he was in prison. All of the letters said that he would meet Mio after being released from prison.

Mio moved to the apartment where she won't be stalked by Karashima. In fact, the move was so recent that all the stuff in the her apartment hasn't even been used yet. She even stated that she only came to sleep due to how scared she was. When she came home, the lights were on, and the door was unlocked. She didn't think anybody would be inside. When she opened the door, Karashima suddenly grabbed her and went about to stab her, with Mio resisting, using her umbrella as a means of defense. They moved to the living room while struggling and Mio pushed him to the wall where the vase hit on his head. Conan sees the injury on the back of Karashima's head, but also noticeed that there's another injury above his nose. Chiba thinks he must've got hurt while struggling as there was blood on the corner of the TV desk.

It seemed like a clear case of self-defense, but Conan was starting to find holes in the story he heard. He had found the umbrella container that still has a little puddle of water in it, Karashima's shoes were wet as well. After confirming that the rain started at seven that evening, Conan went downstairs of the apartment to visit Murakami for questioning. The witness informed Conan that he heard the tv around six, and that it turned off at about nine thirty, before being swiftly followed by the thud and screams. Afterwards, Conan went outside to check the red car and he figured out the truth behind the case.
<spoiler>
When the others are about to leave Mio's apartment, Conan knocks out Kogoro with his stun gun wristwatch and uses the voice changing bowtie using Kogoro's voice to present his deduction. Before that, he tells Takagi that he has something for him to find out.

Conan reveals that this was no self-defense, but a well planned murder. The umbrella container has puddle of water in it. Their umbrellas are outside to preserve the crime scene. That means, there's only one umbrella in the apartment. The umbrella she mistakenly took at the café is Detective Chiba's umbrella. The umbrella that was inside the umbrella container is the one. If that's true, the part being attacked right when she entered by Karashima will be a contradiction. Mio didn't have the time to put the umbrella inside the container. There's another contradiction, even though he walked to the apartment from the car, his clothes are not wet at all. He could have used the umbrella but they weren't any other umbrellas. In other words, Karashima got in the apartment before it started raining which is before 7. The shoes are wet but Karashima's socks and pants are not wet at all. There's one more contradiction, the car's driver seat. For a large person to be driving, the seat was too close to the handle. These are all situational proofs, but there is only thing that can bring the case to light. This was no self-defense, but a planned murder by the culprit, Mio Ashida. This was all set up by Mio from the beginning. Mio first marked the doorknob to make it looked like it was picked. She called Karashima on the phone saying, "the door is unlocked, so wait inside." Next, she showed Detective Chiba the letters that were from Karashima. She portrayed herself as if she was afraid. Then she purposely took Chiba's umbrella and left the café. She used her car to try to hit Chiba. She made Chiba think that she was targeted. During that time, Karashima went to her home before it rained. While waiting for her, he was watching tv. He couldn't use the remote so used the tv. Mio came home around 9:30. Karashima crawled towards the tv on his knees and turns it off. That's when he get knocked down with a vase from behind. He fell forward, hitting his nose on the table. That's the first noise Murakami heard. After that, Mio made Karashima hold the knife. The hat and sunglasses Chiba saw was put near Karashima to make it look like that Karashima was the stalker. The scream Murakami heard was all acting from Mio. She chose the apartment because noise can be easily heard through the walls. Murakami also heard other noises during the murder. Chiba said that Karashima threatening her is a fact. The anger from the court and the letter is proof, but about the letter, especially the letter that started up again. "After finishing my sentence, I want to meet you and tell you the truth." That is why he kept on sending those letters. It's probably about the accident from one year ago. He might have wanted to confess what he had done to Mio. Conan wondered why the letters stopped for awhile so he had Takagi check. Takagi confirms that before the letters stopped, Karashima had a serious illness during prison. The doctor said he had six months left to live. After leaving prison, he hasn't visited a hospital that the doctor advised him to visit. Most likely, he was looking for Mio, who changed jobs and moved. Then he really want to confess his sins. Mio thinks it's a lie and she doesn't believe it. She still doesn't forgive him at all. Her brother died, she was dumped, and her father got fired and died in the hospital from being ill. Her mother died soon after. Nobody saved her. Nobody believed her brother was innocent. That's why she chose revenge on Karashima. Then, as a real proof, after finding out what it is, she will figure out what she had done was meaningless. Even though, there doesn't exist a meaningful murder. Conan will show the demonstration. Mio will act as Karashima and Chiba will act as Mio. When the tv is turn on, Chiba will act as if he is going to attack by raising his hands like he's holding something and Mio will crawl towards the tv on her knees and turn off. When she turned off, there is a tv reflection of Chiba behind her. That's when Karashima saw Mio. But he did not run. The only thing Conan think of is that he chose death. He was repenting from deep within his heart. Now Mio is arrested for murder.

Because of this case, there will be a reinvestigation about the case from one year ago. But a life that has been taken and a heavy sin won't disappear.
Hakamada arrives at the interrogation room to confess to the murder revealing Sakuraba blackmailed his wife into debt causing her suicide along with his son. Conan reveals there is more to the story. He continues explaining that after Togashi failed to persuade Hakamada from murder tells him to flee while he cleans the fingerprint. Conan reveals that Sakuraba regained consciousness and was murdered again by Fumitaka Togashi. As evidence, he reveals that Sakuraba's witness saw a left handed individual throw the weapon at her; Since she only witnessed the reflection, the culprit had to be right handed. Togashi confesses to the murder stating Sakuraba forced his mother into debt prompting her suicide.

The letter however is not written in Kid's usual style raising the idea that an imposter is after Jirokichi's safe. Sonoko invites Ran, Kogoro, and Conan to Jirokichi's house. After examining the security of the safe, Kaitou Kid's card, in its usual style, is found confirming Kaitou Kid's plan to open the safe. Conan suspects that Kaitou Kid is one of the three newly hired workers of Jirokichi. Jirokichi however continues to proclaim it to be the work of an imposter, causing Conan to suspect Jirokichi as Kid himself.

Part 2
The nearly hired maid and adviser inform Conan of Jirokichi's strange behavior. They reveal that after dinner, two plates are always missing and Jirokichi always brings his cane with him to the safe. Jirokichi asks the maid for a hand and they head to his room. Jirokichi leaves with his bodyguard for a drive. Shortly after, an unconscious Jirokichi is found tied up and his room and a note of Kaitou Kid is found on the safe. This causes the whole police force that are guarding the safe to abandon their position and chase after "Jirokichi".
Conan reveals the first message by "Kaitou Kid" was actually done by Jirokichi asking for Kid's assistance. Conan also reveals Jirokichi purposely placed suspicion on himself in order to clear the area of cops so Kaitou Kid could open the safe. Inside the safe is revealed to be Jirokichi's dog, Lupin who was stuck inside since few days with the scarf on which Jirokichi had written the safe combination to remember it.
Situation
Yoko takes the Detective Boys to a TV studio for a tour. When they run into Onizuka Satan, a vocalist for a visual kei rock band. The Detective Boys decide to search for his room to get his autograph. Meanwhile, a cosmetic-less Satan meets with the director of the TV station, Tenji Urushihara, and murders him.
The Detective Boys find Onizuka Satan's room and meet Satan in full make up who gives them an autograph. Soon after Urushihara is found by an employee and the police arrive at the station. While the police suspect the murderer to be Satan, Satan retorts that with his make up and costume, it would have been impossible to leave his room without being noticed. Since there is no mirror in Satan's dressing room, it would be impossible to put on his make up and absolves him from the murder. Conan still suspects Satan is the murderer.
The investigation leads him to find out Onizuka Satan made a make-shift mirror by using a transparent ruler and black construction paper. To prove this, Conan reveals that the origami cranes were used to camouflage the construction paper but evidence suggested it was not made on that day. Satan confesses and reveals that three years ago a letter from his fan stopped coming. Satan reveals that recently he found out Urushihara sent a message to that fan to commit suicide in the name of Satan in order to have Satan gain more publicity to make more money.
*The anime version starts at night with Onizuka Satan being told by Tenji that his performance is canceled.
*The manga version of the story takes place within the Clash of Red and Black storyline (between Hades and Coma) and has a scene with Conan and Haibara debating on the relation between Hidemi Hondou and Eisuke. The anime version (taking place before the storyline) replaces the scene with the Detective Boys introducing themselves to Waka Inoue and Azusa Yamamoto.
Kogoro is invited to investigate a case where a man's wife is being stalked by an unknown stalker. Conan realizes these occurrences are related to the song Nocturne of Red. During a party, a blackout occurs and a man's figure is seen embracing his wife forcibly.
<spoiler>
The case is solved, the mysterious man was figured out to be a statue hanged by a fishing rod. The culprit was revealed to be Misaki Kana. Before meeting Yoshinori she was actually engaged with Gerard Tenma in Hawaii. Tenma discovering how he was dumped and betrayed, threatens her with the original manuscript of the Red Nocturne containing flowers in the lyrics whose representation were emotions of betrayal and hatred. Threatened for her life, Misaki calls Gerard to a cliff and pushes him to his supposed death. Discovering that he survived and that he was forming connections with the company her husband owns, she fears that Gerard Tenma will threaten to expose her attempted murder and threaten to kill her. She thereby self imposes blackmail including the Beethoven statue stunt and calling Mouri Kogoro's help to keep up the impression that she is a victim. She frames her own husband, to protect him from being seduced by Masayo into giving up his company. He would be free from her influence while in jail and Misaki would run the company until he is released. Tragically, it was then revealed that Gerard forgave her, seeing that he turned her into a murderer and was genuinely trying to improve her husband's company and rewrote the Red Nocturne to express his feelings of sorrow for her. Misaki ends up breaking down in tears. Afterwards, Conan gives Ran flowers. Ran interprets the flowers with the meaning "invincible" and gets angry at Conan.
Resolution
<spoiler>

Conan helps Kogoro solve his case without even having to knock him out, but after wards Ran escorts him to Shinichi's house for a confession of him being Shinichi. But Ran shows strong intuition about his personality and it makes Conan look wary for a no way out situation. When Shinichi's mom appears on the scene Conan/Shinichi worried for more thinking that Yukiko his mom might slip information about him, though she make more complex background for Conan to help Shinichi escape but Ran didn't give up so fast but ended in leaving Conan in his mom's care for days without knowing the truth. Upon entering the gate Yukiko started to treat Shinichi as a real baby and even carry him way into their house, but why has she left America for Japan?
<spoiler>
The killer was Mako Miyoshi, whose real name was Mako Kinoshita. She was the younger sister of Yashirou Kinoshita, a promising stage magician who died on-stage 14 years ago, when he tried an escape trick that went horribly wrong... but said death actually was a murder commited by his mentor Tsukumo, who was jealous and fearful due to the man's raw talent.

Mako, who back then was around Ayano's age, was behind the scenes and saw Tsukumo mess up with the supplies, but she was too young to properly testify; she became Tsukumo's apprentice as well and, once the training was complete and Tsukumo was discussing which of his apprentices was the most qualified to be his succesor, she revealed her identity and forced him to go along with her plans by threatening to kill Ayano. (Which she didn't do, though Mako admits she wanted to more than once).
</spoiler>

Case 2:
Situation
Yukiko and Conan arrived in Gunma to meet her childhood friend, Hiromi Yabuuchi. After that, Hiromi introduces her uncle to Yukiko. Also, Hiromi's uncle has a friend named Carlos from Brazil. With his mom calling Conan her second son to her friends outside the city, Conan must play along and act like he is a genius thanks to detective books. When a murder takes place and he can't figure out the answer, Conan must figure out if his mom will be safe or if she could be the next target.
<spoiler>
The killer is Yoshifusa Yabuuchi, who actually is only impersonating the real Yoshifusa Yabuuchi, who died in Brazil years ago and was a good friend of his. The fake Yoshifusa is named Dickson Tanaka, a man born in Brazil to Japanese parents and Carlos' bodyguard, since young Carlos is the real Yoshifusa's son with a Brazilian woman as well as one of the heirs. Dickson Tanaka made everyone believe Carlos was his bodyguard to protect him from the others (since they thought he was a bodyguard, they wouldn't attempt anything against Carlos), and he killed Machiko in self-defense when she attempted to stab him in the bath.

Even more confusing is that Keiko Yabuuchi set up a timed mechanical crossbow launch to commit suicide. By bad luck their seats were rearranged and the bodyguard was nearly killed by it.

Machiko's aim in killing Yoshifusa Yabuuchi was to seize his inheritance. She went to an urban party and gave a phone call to establish an alibi, then drove back in a car waiting for the opportunity to kill. She told Hiromi Yabuuchi in advance to rekindle the fire heating the rural hot-tub creating an opportunity where Yoshifusa could be isolated.
Conan finds out that the man is Tatsuo Hayase, an artist who's been missing for a year. His wife, Kimie, is the only one who can identify the body but she proclaims it's not him. Conan proves that the murdered man is Tatsuo by the fingerprints he left behind when he came home after regaining his memories. Conan reveals that the murderer is Kimie Hayase. In the past she tried killing her husband to inherit his life insurance money then successfully did so again to prevent him from threatening her and revealing all to the police.
Dub changes
* The names of the characters and places in the Funimation Dub are:
:* World Abstract Painting Exhibit - Art Expo

Trivia
* Despite making a big show of how Takagi doesn't smoke in the movie Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure, he actually does so in this episode in order for the show to reveal how Kimie dislikes smokers. This could either be one of three things.

:* A simple animation error.

:* This is earlier on in the show, before Takagi was a well known character, and perhaps, the idea of making him a non-smoker didn't come up until well after this episode.

:* Or, seeing as how fans love to speculate, it may not have been Takagi. Though this theory is highly unlikely, there is still the possibility of Vermouth disguising herself. This is before Conan actually confronts the organization again, so it is highly doubted. Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that Takagi did smoke, despite that in the future, it is shown that he isn't a smoker.
Resolution
<spoiler>
Conan found out who the criminal was and put Sonoko to sleep. Through Sonoko, Conan explained that the criminal had actually put in the capsule they found floating in the drink and the poison in separately to make it look like the poison was but in 15 minutes before when it actually had been put in more recently. By looking at the video Ran took he showed that Sonoko had put her lemon tea right next the victim's and the criminal had put the poison in Sonoko's instead of the one the victim had been drinking. Proof of this was the fact that Sonoko's fingerprints were all over the can and 2 of the people that had touched the can did have their fingerprints on it.

The only 4 people that had been near the can after it was switch was Sonoko, Ran, Conan, and the groom, Toshihiko Takasugi. Sonoko and Ran had never touched the can after the switch and once they exclude Conan, Takasugi and the victim herself are the only people that could of poisoned the lemon tea. Then he explains how it couldn't of been the victim because there was no container to hold it in and drying agent found in the room. Those two things were needed to carry around sodium hydroxide, the poison used, because sodium hydroxide liquefies in a few minutes and the victim was in the room the whole time there would be no way to dispose of the container and drying agent outside in the hall where it was found. Therefore, the criminal was Toshihiko Takasugi.

The motive was that superintendent Matsumoto had crashed into a suspect's car 20 years ago, and Takasugi's mother and only direct relative got caught in the crash. Not seeing Takasugi's mom, Matsumoto told him to go away when he tried to tell him; 15 min later Takasugi's mom died on the street. Upon hearing this, Matsumoto admitted his share of guilt in the accident, but also added that once he learned about Takasugi's mother, he never forgave himself for inadvertedly killing her.

Takasugi was adopted by a rich family, and then destiny brought him back to Matsumoto and Sayuri. When he learned that his girlfriend was the superintendent's daughter, he was consumed by anger and bitterness, wanted to kill her to show the superintendent how much it hurt to lose someone he cared for. Kazumi Takenaka, however, slapped Takasugi and told him that Sayuri's first love was a boy who loved Lemon Tea and never forgot him after he moved away for undisclosed reasons. Once Sayuri started dating Takasugi and noticed he also drank Lemon Tea, she deduced what had happened in the past... therefore she did know that Takasugi was her lost first love, knew what he wanted to do to her, and willingly took the poison to atone for all the pain that transformed Takasugi from a kind boy to an embittered adult.

Later they were told that Sayuri's surgery was a success and that she was going to recover soon... even to the relief of Takasugi himself, who had genuinely repented from what he had done. He was given a light sentence due to Sayuri telling the judge about how she drank his poison voluntarily; three years later, Sayuri and Takasugi rekindled their relationship, and they got married for real.
Kouji Takeno was the killer. His reason was that both he and Ikuta were in love with the same woman, Keiko Togawa, but she died in a hiking incident where the group had to leave her in the mountains to search for help and couldn't return in time to save her from freezing to death. Later, Takeno found out that Ikuta messed up with the group in purpose to have the unfortunate Keiko dead since she rejected his affections in favor of Takeno's; Ikuta was actually bragging about it while drunkenly rambling to the also drunk Nakamura.
The weapon of choice was actually Takeno's socks, which are very resistent special socks used by sportsmen and specially by hikers. He easily filled them with lots of small rocks he got from an aquarium, since they wouldn't break; once he built a VERY hard and heavy "weapon", which would easily kill a person if used to hit them, Takeno put the used some fishing rope to tie everything up, and then launch it towards Ikuta, who was merely standing in the street while smoking.

Ikuta was a heavy smoker, so Takeno could easily see his lit cigarette and pinpoint his improvised "sock full of rocks" towards him; the blood in the different buildings came from the "sack" bouncing on them due to the full strenght of the impact. The proof came when some strands of wool coming from the socks were found in the aquarium: Takeno returned the rocks to their original place but the tiny strands remained, and they had Ikuta's DNA on them.
</spoiler>
Dub changes
* The names of the characters in the Funimation Dub are:
:* Yoshiro Ikuta - Zachery Byers
:* Masami Kusaka - Shane Vanderburg
:* Yoichi Shimizu - Buford Pulmer
:* Kouji Takeno - Torman Llyod
:* Hidenori Nakamura - Ned Armstrong
:* Keiko Togawa - Pamela Harding
* In the Funimation Dub Kouji and Keiko had secretly eloped three weeks prior to the mountain trip, and he had taken a life insurance policy on her. When Yoshiro caught wind of his plan, Kouji had to cut him in. They worked together to kill Keiko for the money, however, when Kouji came to her, she was still alive, and he was the one that killed her, taking the chance as he was the first one in the group to reach her. His reason for killing Yoshiro in the dub was because Yoshiro was bragging about the plan while he was drunk.
