Conan, Kogoro, and Ran pass by a woman named Kyoko Takahata who passes out upon receiving a phone call that her brother-in-law, Itsuro Soejima was found dead in her home.

They head to her house along with the police to discover that the drunk Soejima died when he fired a shotgun toward the ceiling, which caused a chandelier to fall on top of him.
The police conclude it's suicide, however Conan believes it was a carefully planned murder. Conan investigates and discovers that in half a year, there were nine incidents where Soejima almost died due to his alcoholism and that Takahata was involved in all nine incidents.

After gathering the evidence, Conan gathers Kogoro, the police and Takahata and tranquilizes Kogoro to reveal his deductions.

Conan reveals that '''Takahata''' called Soejima to her home and had prepared the alcohol and shotgun to tempt Soejima, who is a recovering alcoholic. As evidence, Conan reveals that a piece of her nail was found in Soejima's house and that she was searching for his cellphone which evidenced that she called him to her place.

Takahata confesses and reveals that she killed Soejima because she was sure that he caused the death of her beloved sister. Conan reveals that a message from her sister's phone reveals she died of an illness and that she loved Soejima very much, and Takahata has a breakdown over said revelation.

Manda, a well known author, is greeted by his editor who needs his manuscript. He tells him that he is almost done and the editor goes and waits in the hotel hallway. Manda sneaks by in a disguise and goes to Haramoto's house, a man who has been ghost writing for Manda. Haramoto gives Manda the script and then tells him about a new mystery he is planning to unveil once Manda introduces him to the right people. Manda kills Haramoto with a vase and steals the detective story before returning to his hotel room.

Genta hits a baseball through the window of Haramoto's house and breaks a vase. They go inside to apologize and find Haramoto dead. Conan realizes that the victim must have known the killer, and Manda is acting suspicious especially when he interrupts the housekeeper when she mentions the mystery Haramoto was working on. Conan tips the police off, and they arrive at Manda's house and arrest him.
