Conan has to deal with some stiff competition when Heiji Hattori, heralded as the "Great Detective of the West", comes looking for Shinichi Kudo to prove which of them is the best detective. He shows up all of a sudden in the Mouri Agency (since he suspects Shinichi has a hand on Kogoro's recent success and Sonoko told him where it was located), bringing a nice Osakan liquor as a gift to Kogoro (so he'll let him stay overnight), and delivers the challenge, which will take place regarding the request coming from a rich woman: to make a background check on her future daughter-in-law, a young woman who's simply too good to be true so she could actually be a bitch in sheep's clothing or a gold digger in disguise.

However, before Conan can save his reputation, he must first save himself, as a mysterious sickness threatens to close his file for good, and then check on his surroundings, as the husband of their client appears dead right after the group arrives to his big and fancy house.

<spoiler>The killer is '''Kimie Tsujimura'''. She murdered her husband by first drugging him with sleeping pills before going to the Mouri agency, then pretending to try waking him up, but actually poisoning him with a poison-imbibed needle that she hid inside a locket attached to her keychain. Which was exactly the same type of locket/keychain that Tsujimura himself had. She also tried to stage a fake locked room murder with Tsujimua's locket keychain and fishing lines specifically placed all around the home to make him look guilty no matter which room he visited after the murder and to make everyone believe that Tsujimura had died and had been locked inside the study with the sealed room trick; in reality, he was alive but asleep due to the drugs, so Kimie secretly prickled him to his death in front of everyone.

Kimie's reasons to murder her husband were the following: twenty years before she was was happily married to a man named Kenji Yamashiro and they had a little daughter, Yukiko. Tsujimura, who was in love with Kimie and jealous of Yamashiro, staged a cruel trap to accuse him of being involved in a fraud. Yamashiro was sent to jail and died there soon after, then Tsujimura courted the extremely distraught Kimie, and as soon as she was widowed he divorced his wife/Takayoshi's mother and convinced Kimie to marry him. Kimie was unaware of this and accepted, since she was completely devastated and had to give up her child's custody to Yamashiro's family.

Twenty years after the "fraud", the adult Takayoshi brought a picture of a girl he had fallen for and intended to marry: she happened to be Yukiko, Kimie and Yamashiro's daughter, who had grown to look almost exactly like a younger Kimie save for her hair/color scheme. (As seen in an old picture of the just-married Kimie and Tsujimura, which the latter kept in his studio). Tsujimura realised who the girl was, was completely horrified and started screaming at his son for wanting to marry "that man's child". Kimie also recognized Yukiko in the picture and started to get suspicious, then Tsujimura revealed the truth to her. So she decided to kill her "husband" to get at him, using her visit to Kogoro to ask about Yukiko's background as an excuse that would provide her for an alibi.

(As a corollary, Toshimitsu Tsujimura had helped his son Isao in his plan to "steal" Kimie from Yamashiro and send him to jail. He had repented long ago, though, and he wanted to take the blame for his son's murder as a way to atone for his terrible sin. Therefore, when Heiji said that he was the culprit, he willingly confessed for a crime that he hadn't committed, trying to wash away the sin of ruining the Yamashiro family's lives.)

Kimie confesses that she is the killer, reveals the above mentioned motive and surrenders to the police without any resistence. Before being taken away, she begs Takayoshi to take good care of her daughter Yukiko, and Takayoshi promises to do so as Yukiko cries after learning the truth.

Heiji aknowledges his loss and tells this to Shinichi, aknowledging him officially as the winner of this case. Shinichi, however, calls him a fool and says that it's useless to compete, since there is and always be only one truth. After saying this, he almost collapses atop of the stairs; since he had recovered his original physical age solely as an effect of the homemade liquor (doubling as a folk cure for colds) that Heiji made him drink earlier ''and'' the cold he had, it was only temporary and it was wearing off.

Ran, who knew nothing about this, catches him trying to sneak away and tries to make him stay so he will go to a doctor. He tells her to wait and gets away by practically throwing himself down the stairs as his body begins to actually reverse to a child's one, nevermind his mental pleas to resist a little so he can stay with Ran a little longer. Then, Shinichi almost screams Ran's name before fully shrinking back.

When Ran finally catches up, she finds Conan alone in an oversized shirt. He tells her that Shinichi has just left and then passes out of pain and light-headness, which keeps Ran from making him any more questions.

Heiji returns to Osaka and, once Conan gets mildly better, he wonders why did his body return to normal even if for some minutes. He realises it was an after-effect of the liquor, but Ran catches him trying to snatch the bottle from the drunk Kogoro and takes it away. Conan is upset but then the Detective Kids drop by to visit, which cheers him up a little.</spoiler>

* In the English Dub, after the accusation of spying on Ran, Shinichi states that he's a detective and that's what he does, whereas in the Japanese version he states that he can tell how Ran is doing by hearing her voice.
* In the English Dub, Heiji drops subtle hints that the two men who poisoned him were [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]], whereas in the Japanese version he merely acknowledges Shinichi as a worthy rival. The dub change presumably was made to fix a story problem for the upcoming ''[[Game Company Murder Case]]'' (see that page's continuity error).

Some time ago, Chunen was in love with Tenei's grand-daughter Kikuno, who not only was the heiress to the temple but had just accepted to marry another Buddhist monk from a very important monastery. Tenei was so upset at such an affair, that when he learned that Chunen and Kikuno were about to elope, he killed Chunen using exactly the same trick that Shunen later used on him, which is described below, managing to strangle the guy and then set the scene in such a way that it looked like a perfect killing by the Mist Goblin.

Shunen was always suspicious of Tenei and the other monks, so he hid his identity and entered the monastery to gain their trust and learn what had happened to his brother. He spent six months quietly snooping around, managing to more or less figure out how the murder was committed, but not the identity of the killer.

Shunen confronted Tenei right after the Mouris and Conan had gone to bed, having noticed how he had openly spoken about the Chunen incident when prior to that no one had ever mentioned it. Under the effects of alcohol, Tenei told Shunen everything. The young novice begged his superior to turn himself in, but Tenei refused and said he'd rather let everyone think the Mist Goblin took Chunen's life, since such a "mystery" had let him raise the fame of the monstery. Shunen then lost it and used his new found knowledge to kill Tenei in the same way Chunen died: he grabbed a rope, wrapped it around Tenei's neck, and pulled it as if he was carrying a heavy bag on his back: the "bag" being, of course, Tenei.

After recovering his senses and seeing that he had murdered Tenei, Shunen decided to use the same tricks Tenei used on Chunen to throw suspicions off himself: placing the body in a lifeboat, using the nearby cascade water to slowly fill up the room, hanging Tenei's body from the ceiling, and then breaking the wooden wall (most of it was done naturally from the internal water pressure). The room was easily filled with water by taping the priest hole with wooden planks and a tool board was used to divert the waterfall cascade. This explains why no hanging marks were left on the ceiling beam. Shunen, however, failed to dispose of the duct tape he used to tape the hole, which contained his fingerprints. When all of this is revealed, Shunen is arrested promptly and offers no resistance, only saying that he wishes Kogoro had been there to solve his brother's murder.</spoiler>

A baffling and seemingly impossible murder is committed at a secluded Mount Takao temple. Luckily Conan and Kogoro are on the scene. It is believed that the terrible Mist Goblin (Kiritengu), a creature with super strength, haunts the temple. Conan doesn't believe in goblins, but he may have to change his tune as the evidence suggests that the Mist Goblin may be more than just a legend.

<spoiler>Young '''Shunen''' is the killer, as well as the younger brother of the deceased monk Chunen. Some time ago, Chunen was in love with Tenei's grand-daughter Kikuno, who not only was the heiress to the temple but had just accepted to marry another Buddhist monk from a very important monastery. Tenei was so upset at such an affair, that when he learned that Chunen and Kikuno were about to elope, he killed Chunen using exactly the same trick that Shunen later used on him, which is described below, managing to strangle the guy and then set the scene in such a way that it looked like a perfect killing by the Mist Goblin.

Shunen was always suspicious of Tenei and the other monks, so he hid his identity and entered the monastery to gain their trust and learn what had happened to his brother. He spent six months quietly snooping around, managing to more or less figure out how the murder was committed, but not the identity of the killer.

Shunen confronted Tenei right after the Mouris and Conan had gone to bed, having noticed how he had openly spoken about the Chunen incident when prior to that no one had ever mentioned it. Under the effects of alcohol, Tenei told Shunen everything. The young novice begged his superior to turn himself in, but Tenei refused and said he'd rather let everyone think the Mist Goblin took Chunen's life, since such a "mystery" had let him raise the fame of the monstery. Shunen then lost it and used his new found knowledge to kill Tenei in the same way Chunen died: he grabbed a rope, wrapped it around Tenei's neck, and pulled it as if he was carrying a heavy bag on his back: the "bag" being, of course, Tenei.

After recovering his senses and seeing that he had murdered Tenei, Shunen decided to use the same tricks Tenei used on Chunen to throw suspicions off himself: placing the body in a lifeboat, using the nearby cascade water to slowly fill up the room, hanging Tenei's body from the ceiling, and then breaking the wooden wall (most of it was done naturally from the internal water pressure). The room was easily filled with water by taping the priest hole with wooden planks and a tool board was used to divert the waterfall cascade. This explains why no hanging marks were left on the ceiling beam. Shunen, however, failed to dispose of the duct tape he used to tape the hole, which contained his fingerprints. When all of this is revealed, Shunen is arrested promptly and offers no resistance, only saying that he wishes Kogoro had been there to solve his brother's murder.</spoiler>

Conan and the Detective Boys are playing baseball at the construction site. When Mitsuhiko throws the ball, Genta hits it so hard that it went away to someone's yard. When they go there, they rang the door bell, and the mysterious man named Yoshikazu Watanuki appears to them. Conan asks if he could have the ball back from Watanuki's yard. Watanuki refuses and won't give the ball back. He then tells Conan and the Detective Boys to go away. The Detective Boys think that he's really mean. When Conan and the Detective Boys went to the Mouri Detective Agency, they see a man named Masao Kouda from Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. Conan asks him if he's meeting the private detective, Kogoro Mouri. After that, they went inside, and Kouda asks Kogoro if he could find his missing sister named Sanae Kouda. Masao Kouda claims Watanuki has killed his sister and has buried her in his yard.

She worked for a firm which Watanuki had invested for, so Sanae tried to convince him to keep investing so she wouldn't lose her job upon it. Watanuki refused and went towards his room on the second floor, but Sanae tried to stop him by following him after taking off her heels; he tried to push her away and then Sanae lost her balance, plummeting down the stairs and dying when she hit her head on the wall.

Watanuki, upon seeing that he had accidentally killed the girl, buried her body in a small empty place near the construction site. He incessantly watched it so no one would find it, but there was something he didn't know. Sanae had a small flower seed bag in her pocket, a gift from one of her friends; the seeds grew and the flowers blossomed, signifying the place where she was "buried".

Masao had to go to trial due to the robbery, but was declared not to be a danger to society and given a suspended sentence. He retrieved his sister's ashes as well as the flower plant "born" from the seeds, and returned to his hometown in peace to arrange for Sanae's official burial.</spoiler>
