After an unlucky while at the pachinko salon, [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] who walks about sees [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] at a small police office near a train station. He walks in angrily only to find out that Conan was there only to return a found wallet. As they are about to leave the well-known comedian Rokusuke Dodonpa (real name: Rokusuke Tanigaki) walks in and announces to have murdered his chief.

With Kogoro, Conan, [[Juzo Megure|Megure]] and [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] at the crime scene, [[Detective Chiba|Chiba]] brings the housekeeper Ueki to the scene. The victim is Hideki Tendou, Dodonpa's manager and president of the production office. The comedian who turned himself in explains to the police that he has entered the office at 11:10 AM, showed off some of his work to his boss to which he replied that it is cheap, to which Dodonpa threatened the president that he would find another agency. This exchange enraged him and he struck Tendou with a bat which was in the room. Journalists try to force their way into the room to gather statements, but they are hastily dismissed by the police. It appears to be a straightforward case, with the murderer coming forth and admitting his crime, but Conan makes a couple remarks regarding the simplicity of the case and the fact that there appears to be no real motive present. Rokusuke tells the police that he had arrived by train at 11AM, came to the house 10 minutes later and by 11:30 AM he had already turned himself in, which Conan and the train's cameras can attest to, the reason for it outrage was the fact that his manager never signed him up to appear in a variety show on television, even after he asked him for it. The bat was sent to forensics and they confirm that it contains traces of blood and hair from Tendou's body.

Conan wanders around the building searching for clues, meeting the housekeeper who shows Conan that the garden door was left open and that an iron bar was left in the garden, which most likely belonged to a nearby construction site. While Conan takes a look at the bar, he sees Takagi pacing towards the building, who reports that the forensics' conclusion is that the bat, which Dodonpa claimed to have used is in fact now the murder weapon as it doesn't fit the cephalic trauma, which must have been inflicted by a cylindrical-shaped object. After further inquiries, how the bat got tainted with blood and hair, Dodonpa still claims to be the culprit. Conan takes a stroll through the building and asks the housekeeper about other guests which have visited the house today, however he tells him that not many have, in fact, most of them as on vacation, and that besides Dodonpa's visit, Tendou has left the building to buy lunch. The police's investigation yields results as a nearby convenience store proves that he had bought lunch short before 8 AM. Megure questions Dodonpa's whereabouts at 9 AM, to which he states to have visited his former teacher, Izumi Suda, who is now a painter, who lives 1 hour away by car. Chiba and Takagi visit her and confirm that he had indeed visited her. He made a quasi-appointment with her and visited at 9 AM sharp (as seen by her analogue clock that hangs next to the door) to return a book he had borrow earlier. Medical forensics have found out that the tempus mortis is 1 hour after he had eaten the purchased food, circa 9 AM which excludes Dodonpa from the position of the culprit. After he is confronted with the evidence, he admits to, in fact, not be the murderer, but also to not know the real culprit and explains that his real motive was to protect Tendou's honor. He claims that, even though he was a shady person, who abused his position and extorted people, he really gave his best for his career and pushed him forward, and by admitting guilt for the murder which he did not do, he would keep Tendou's slate clean. After he found his dead body, he took the bad and hit him to make it appear real, without thinking of consequences. Even though he's not the culprit, he will still face charges for meddling with the crime scene. With the main suspect now unknown, the investigation is back to almost step one, as Megure orders Chiba and Takagi to find the people who he extorted.

In front of the building journalists try to get a statement from the comedian, who explains the situation and apologizes profoundly. Conan asks a journalist how he found out about the case, since nobody from the outside could've leaked information regarding it, to which he tells him that he had received and anonymous tip about it. Conan worries if there is more to it and if perhaps Dodonpa has tricked them into believing he's innocent.

====Part 2====

[[Ran Mouri|Ran]] went to a karate tournament so [[Conan|Conan]] and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] eat breakfast without her. Rokusuke's apology is publicly broadcasted via television, and when Conan's mentioning about how much of a good person he must be, to take the blame in order to protect his boss' honor, Kogoro says that he'll probably be swarmed with contracts from new agents, making the whole situation look even more fishy.

Conan arrives at the crime scene with his [[Turbo Engine Skateboard|Skateboard]] where he meets [[Wataru Takagi|Officer Takagi]]. He questions him in "Kogoro's stead". He tells him that the culprit has used the backyard's stairs and that the metal rod comes from a construction site in Beika. [[Detective Chiba|Chiba]] enters the scene and reports that no matter whom he asked, everyone spoke highly of the victim and that he had a good reputation. [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] calls Takagi and tells him that the 'culprit' has called the police station from a public phone booth, and told them that he had information regarding Hideki. In a flashback it is shown that the caller used some kind of voice-alteration to make it appear higher than normal, to which the police concludes that it was a woman who called, stating that she knows the culprit but that they will never catch him. Dodonpa returns to the crime scene, having overheard the talk between the three of them, he asks whether they are certain that it is a woman, but Conan tells him that Mouri knows who the culprit is and that he will be able to prove it in the near future. As Rokusuke's about to pull out his cigarettes, the drops a packet of tissues from a pachinko hall, which startles him. Conan again pretends to question in Kogoro's stead when he asks the cashier in the nearby convenience store if Hideki has said anything, to which he tells him that, since Hideki always arrives at the same time, he has prepared his meal for him, to which he replied that he usually eats his meal while watching a morning show at 8 AM where the hostess is very cute.

Conan tries his luck with the artist, Izumi, but to no avail since she doesn't know of the great detective. Having failed this way, he uses his voice altering bowtie and calls Kogoro pretending to be Megure. With the purple-suit detective by his side, they begin questioning Izumi-san about her routine. She tells them that she has neither television, radio or a mobile phone and that the only way to tell the time is the clock on her wall. She also mentions that at that time she usually paints which makes her sleepy afterwards. She confirms, to Mouri's question, that Dodonpa was there yesterday at the given time, after he made and appointment the evening before by telephone. She also mentions that she was more than usually sleepy yesterday when the policemen arrived, thinking it might have something to do with the cake Rokusuke has brought. Conan's last question is answered negatively, regarding whether she looks her door at night, stating that she doesn't have to since the area is pretty safe. As they are leaving the area, they are approached by a man who offers them tissues from a pachinko hall, stating that the entrance is free. Conan asks him if the gave out the same tissues yesterday, to which he replies that he did at around 10 AM. Conan additionally asks if he had given them to anyone famous from television yesterday, which surprises the young man.

With Rokusuke being summoned to the scene and Megure, Chiba and Takagi already waiting, as they enter the apartment Kogoro's (Conan's) reasoning begins.

He reveals that the culprit is not a female, it was a trick to de-route the attention and suspicion to someone else. The culprit is '''Rokusuke Dodonpa'''. The fact that he turned himself in, even though he had an apparent alibi, was actually a plot thought out by him to make sure he wouldn't be accused of being the actual murderer. He arrived at 8:30 AM at Beika where he stole an iron rod. He climbed the stairs behind the house to arrive at 9 AM at the apartment of the president, whom the stroke down with it. He hid the rod and drove to the Akebono district where he met up with Suda-san, at 10 AM. The night before the murder, he snuck into the artist's home and dialed the clock 1 hour backwards. The next morning he arrived at the false-9 AM with a cake which was laced with sleeping pills. As she fell asleep, he corrected the clockface and left.

Evidence which supports Conan's theory is the pachinko hall promoter who recognized Dodonpa as he offered him tissues. He asked him for an autograph and as their exchange became physical, Rokusuke dropped the art books which he returned to the artist, which the promoter recalls. Kogoro says that it will become clear once they check the fingerprints on the books, not of the culprit, but those of the promoter, that he indeed was there at the given time. After he had perfected his alibi, he returned to the crime scene and struck the president with the bat, then turned himself in.

After he had carried out the deed, the gave the tip to the media about the crime and by fake admitting the crime he had given himself a strong base to stand on for future work once his alibi would be confirmed.

The mentally ill driven Dodonpa, who admits the crime, claiming that the victim was a bad person and that by committing murder he had hit two birds with one stone, sees nothing bad in what he had which aggravates the policemen. Megure snaps and starts yelling at him, demanding to know if he doesn't understand that he had erased a human life. After the short exchange, he breaks down crying, saying that he knows what he did and that he regrets what he has done.

After the case was solved, Kogoro and Conan leave the scene when they are again approached by the promoter. Kogoro bursts into a short moment of anger and hunts him down, with Conan joking that for a great detective he is easily being lied to.

====Part 1====

After an unlucky while at the pachinko salon, [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] who walks about sees [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] at a small police office near a train station. He walks in angrily only to find out that Conan was there only to return a found wallet. As they are about to leave the well-known comedian Rokusuke Dodonpa (real name: Rokusuke Tanigaki) walks in and announces to have murdered his chief.

With Kogoro, Conan, [[Juzo Megure|Megure]] and [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] at the crime scene, [[Detective Chiba|Chiba]] brings the housekeeper Ueki to the scene. The victim is Hideki Tendou, Dodonpa's manager and president of the production office. The comedian who turned himself in explains to the police that he has entered the office at 11:10 AM, showed off some of his work to his boss to which he replied that it is cheap, to which Dodonpa threatened the president that he would find another agency. This exchange enraged him and he struck Tendou with a bat which was in the room. Journalists try to force their way into the room to gather statements, but they are hastily dismissed by the police. It appears to be a straightforward case, with the murderer coming forth and admitting his crime, but Conan makes a couple remarks regarding the simplicity of the case and the fact that there appears to be no real motive present. Rokusuke tells the police that he had arrived by train at 11AM, came to the house 10 minutes later and by 11:30 AM he had already turned himself in, which Conan and the train's cameras can attest to, the reason for it outrage was the fact that his manager never signed him up to appear in a variety show on television, even after he asked him for it. The bat was sent to forensics and they confirm that it contains traces of blood and hair from Tendou's body.

Conan wanders around the building searching for clues, meeting the housekeeper who shows Conan that the garden door was left open and that an iron bar was left in the garden, which most likely belonged to a nearby construction site. While Conan takes a look at the bar, he sees Takagi pacing towards the building, who reports that the forensics' conclusion is that the bat, which Dodonpa claimed to have used is in fact now the murder weapon as it doesn't fit the cephalic trauma, which must have been inflicted by a cylindrical-shaped object. After further inquiries, how the bat got tainted with blood and hair, Dodonpa still claims to be the culprit. Conan takes a stroll through the building and asks the housekeeper about other guests which have visited the house today, however he tells him that not many have, in fact, most of them as on vacation, and that besides Dodonpa's visit, Tendou has left the building to buy lunch. The police's investigation yields results as a nearby convenience store proves that he had bought lunch short before 8 AM. Megure questions Dodonpa's whereabouts at 9 AM, to which he states to have visited his former teacher, Izumi Suda, who is now a painter, who lives 1 hour away by car. Chiba and Takagi visit her and confirm that he had indeed visited her. He made a quasi-appointment with her and visited at 9 AM sharp (as seen by her analogue clock that hangs next to the door) to return a book he had borrow earlier. Medical forensics have found out that the rigor mortis is 1 hour after he had eaten the purchased food, circa 9 AM which excludes Dodonpa from the position of the culprit. After he is confronted with the evidence, he admits to, in fact, not be the murderer, but also to not know the real culprit and explains that his real motive was to protect Tendou's honor. He claims that, even though he was a shady person, who abused his position and extorted people, he really gave his best for his career and pushed him forward, and by admitting guilt for the murder which he did not do, he would keep Tendou's slate clean. After he found his dead body, he took the bad and hit him to make it appear real, without thinking of consequences. Even though he's not the culprit, he will still face charges for meddling with the crime scene. With the main suspect now unknown, the investigation is back to almost step one, as Megure orders Chiba and Takagi to find the people who he extorted.

In front of the building journalists try to get a statement from the comedian, who explains the situation and apologizes profoundly. Conan asks a journalist how he found out about the case, since nobody from the outside could've leaked information regarding it, to which he tells him that he had received and anonymous tip about it. Conan worries if there is more to it and if perhaps Dodonpa has tricked them into believing he's innocent.

====Part 2====

[[Ran Mouri|Ran]] went to a karate tournament so [[Conan|Conan]] and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]] eat breakfast without her. Rokusuke's apology is publicly broadcasted via television, and when Conan's mentioning about how much of a good person he must be, to take the blame in order to protect his boss' honour, Kogoro says that he'll probably be swarmed with contracts from new agents, making the whole situation look even more fishy.

Conan arrives at the crime scene with his [[Turbo Engine Skateboard|Skateboard]] where he meets [[Wataru Takagi|Officer Takagi]]. He questions him in "Kogoro's stead". He tells him that the culprit has used the backyard's stairs and that the metal rod comes from a construction site in Beika. [[Detective Chiba|Chiba]] enters the scene and reports that no matter whom he asked, everyone spoke highly of the victim and that he had a good reputation. [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] calls Takagi and tells him that the 'culprit' has called the police station from a public phone booth, and told them that he had information regarding Hideki. In a flashback it is shown that the caller used some kind of voice-alteration to make it appear higher than normal, to which the police concludes that it was a woman who called, stating that she knows the culprit but that they will never catch him. Dodonpa returns to the crime scene, having overheard the talk between the three of them, he asks whether they are certain that it is a woman, but Conan tells him that Mouri knows who the culprit is and that he will be able to prove it in the near future. As Rokusuke's about to pull out his cigarettes, the drops a packet of tissues from a pachinko hall, which startles him. Conan again pretens to question in Kogoro's stead when he asks the cashier in the nearby convenience store if Hideki has said anything, to which he tells him that, since Hideki always arrives at the same time, he has prepared his meal for him, to which he replied that he usually eats his meal while watching a morning show at 8 AM where the hostess is very cute.

Conan tries his luck with the artist, Izumi, but to no avail since she doesn't know of the great detective. Having failed this way, he uses his voice altering bowtie and calls Kogoro pretending to be Megure. With the purple-suit detective by his side, they begin questioning Izumi-san about her routine. She tells them that she has neither television, radio or a mobile phone and that the only way to tell the time is the clock on her wall. She also mentions that at that time she usually paints which makes her sleepy afterwards. She confirms, to Mouri's question, that Dodonpa was there yesterday at the given time, after he made and appointment the evening before by telephone. She also mentions that she was more than usually sleepy yesterday when the policemen arrived, thinking it might have something to do with the cake Rokusuke has brought. Conan's last question is answered negatively, regarding whether she looks her door at night, stating that she doesn't have to since the area is pretty safe. As they are leaving the area, they are approached by a man who offers them tissues from a pachinko hall, stating that the entrance is free. Conan asks him if the gave out the same tissues yesterday, to which he replies that he did at around 10 AM. Conan additionally asks if he had given them to anyone famous from television yesterday, which surprises the young man.

With Rokusuke being summoned to the scene and Megure, Chiba and Takagi already waiting, as they enter the apartment Kogoro's (Conan's) reasoning begins.

He reveals that the culprit is not a female, it was a trick to de-route the attention and suspicion to someone else. The culprit is '''Rokusuke Dodonpa'''. The fact that he turned himself in, even though he had an apparent alibi, was actually a plot thought out by him to make sure he wouldn't be accused of being the actual murderer. He arrived at 8:30 AM at Beika where he stole an iron rod. He climbed the stairs behind the house to arrive at 9 AM at the apartment of the president, whom the stroke down with it. He hid the rod and drove to the Akebono district where he met up with Suda-san, at 10 AM. The night before the murder, he snuck into the artist's home and dialed the clock 1 hour backwards. The next morning he arrived at the false-9 AM with a cake which was laced with sleeping pills. As she fell asleep, he corrected the clockface and left.

Evidence which supports Conan's theory is the pachinko hall promoter who recognized Dodonpa as he offered him tissues. He asked him for an autograph and as their exchange became physical, Rokusuke dropped the art books which he returned to the artist, which the promoter recalls. Kogoro says that it will become clear once they check the fingerprints on the books, not of the culprit, but those of the promoter, that he indeed was there at the given time. After he had perfected his alibi, he returned to the crime scene and struck the president with the bat, then turned himself in.

After he had carried out the deed, the gave the tip to the media about the crime and by fake admitting the crime he had given himself a strong base to stand on for future work once his alibi would be confirmed.

The mentally ill driven Dodonpa, who admits the crime, claiming that the victim was a bad person and that by committing murder he had hit two birds with one stone, sees nothing bad in what he had which aggravates the policemen. Megure snaps and starts yelling at him, demanding to know if he doesn't understand that he had erased a human life. After the short exchange, he breaks down crying, saying that he knows what he did and that he regrets what he has done.

After the case was solved, Kogoro and Conan leave the scene when they are again approached by the promoter. Kogoro bursts into a short moment of anger and hunts him down, with Conan joking that for a great detective he is easily being lied to.

====Part 1====

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] walk down the street while talking about [[The Tragedy of the Red Woman|the red woman case]]. They ask her about her self defense techniques, to which she says that her brother used to send her tapes which she watched many times. She tells them that her mother still lives in the United States, which is a reason why she's now staying in a hotel, since [[Akai family's middle brother|her brother]] didn't want them to live together. Sonoko makes a remark about the cost of living in a hotel, but Masumi tells her that a friend of her father is taking care of it. The groups makes the decision to visit the hotel she is staying at, after which she cancels plans which she had to meet up with her brother.

They ride the elevator up to the 30th floor, where she is staying, and as they leave the elevator Sera mentions that she plans to move out of the hotel soon. In the floor's lobby they see three men apparently waiting. Sera explains to Suzuki that they are waiting for a manuscript of a famous author who also lives in the hotel. Keigo Hiura, a romance author, introduces himself to the group as they pass by his room. After a short exchange with Ran, he invites the waiting men into his suite to eat. Shortly after they gaze upon the food, further room service arrives bearing a wine bottle. Keigo then explains that the person who eats the most will receive the manuscript, which will be tested by weighing on a scale. More food is set to arrive; Beika sushi, pizza, Chinese food and donuts. While they are eating, he will take a bath, so they should be cautious that he doesn't leave and do something. The girls are hanging out on the balcony and Conan is curiously looking around the suite. He spots a room which he wants to enter but Masumi interrupts him, saying that the room is in a mess and that he wouldn't want to trip over her panties. While the author's guests are leaving, so that he can finish writing the manuscript, they discuss his success and what an important role in it his assistant, Chiaki Minazuki, plays, who rents a room below his. Some magazines are suspecting the two of being a couple, two of the men state that their publishing houses have even received threats to keep that "man eating beast" away from him. The girls have ordered room service, pastry, sweets and tea to keep them cheerful while they discuss boys and love, with Conan, who joined them, questioning whether he should really be part of it. They then ask him whether he likes someone. Masumi, being very specific, asks if he likes a girl which he met a long time ago and can't forget. Sonoko believes he likes Ayumi, but Ran thinks it's Ai who has caught his eye. At 6 PM, as they are getting ready to leave, they hear the bellboy scream. Conan drops his backpack and the group runs towards the source of the scream. Suddenly a hand opens the door to Masumi's suite.

When they arrive at the lower storey, they see a confused bellboy and the victim, Chiaki, lying on the floor with strangle marks around her neck with Yoshikawa lines. Sera concludes that she has been dead for approximately two to three hours. Keigo arrives at the door with a Nichiuri publisher following him shortly after, who says that the author just wanted to buy cigarettes. After seeing her dead, the man assumes that it has to have something to do with the threats which they received. Hiura yells at him, asking why he hasn't told him anything, that he had the whole day to do it and that during that time he was just peacefully writing his novel. Conan and Masumi seem to believe that he is the culprit.

The bellboy tells the police that he has spotted her when he was bringing champagne which was ordered to be brought exactly at 6 PM. The key card to the room was on the floor and the door was slightly open. Keigo, who ordered the champagne had trouble with the last page of his novel, so thirty minutes before the whole happening he wanted to go for a smoke and stride through the floors, when he arrived at the scene he was just returning from buying a pack from the vending machine and was climbing the stairs which helps him come up with new ideas. Conan makes a remark that during that time the author wasn't doing anything in particular, finding it strange that he knew that she was murdered while he was writing his book, since it could have also happened afterwards. The author explains himself by saying that she didn't arrive at his room three hours earlier to give him some documents, and when he saw her corpse he assumed her death to be the cause why she didn't come. The publisher then explains, together with Hiura, that they were invited to his room and ate there with more takeout food arriving during the time the murder apparently happened and that there was no possibility for the author to just slip through the door and commit the crime, since the guests were the ones who paid for the food. At 4 PM the guests left and waited outside of the suite which they watched over during the whole time. Keigo came out only once to give a finished piece of work. The three manuscripts are almost finished, but he is stuck on the last page of the third one. At 5:30 PM he printed out everything, gave it them and went to buy cigarettes. The publisher was reading the manuscript when he heard the shout, Hiura then called him with the assumption that something had happened.
[[Juzo Megure|Megure]] questions the men if they know anyone who holds a grudge towards Chiaki, to which the publisher mentions the threats. Keigo says that there was suspicion of them being a couple since they were photographed together, which is also why his wife divorced him. He claims to have relied on her help a lot, saying that she was partially responsible for the book being finished, and that they even had plans to make her an author next year.

When leaving the scene, they see that a lot of people have gathered on the floor. Conan spots someone in the crowd who looks like Sera but appears to be a middle schooler. He tries to find her, but is interrupted by Ran. He immediately connects her with the girl from the mobile phone.
Sera tells the group that the author is the murderer, saying that the door couldn't have been used and that even though one would have to be very brave, the balcony is the only other way. She asks Conan whether he thinks the same to which he agrees.

====Part 2====

[[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] asks [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] if they have taken shampoo bottle caps away from the crime scene, but they haven't, since they only reached the door and didn't go further. He also mentions that somebody has thrown over the table, which landed in the victim's suitcase in the room with beer which was spilled in it. He mentions that the suitcase was quite large, even though there weren't many things in it - clothing, make up, a laptop, a bag and an old post card. The twenty year old post cast was written by Hiura, stating that if he was to use the story he would use the recipient's name for the protagonist. It was addressed to Outa Jun. Ran quickly mentions that Outa Jun is, in fact, the name of the protagonist in the author's book "The cellphone, the sea and I". She quickly explains the plot of the book to the group. A scratched mobile phone is found on the beach, a model which hasn't been released yet, with the message "How old are you?", after a few exchanges via messages between the person who found the phone and the one who was sending the messages, it can be concluded that the person is sending messages from the future. The answer to the question who was sending the messages was "The cellphone, the sea and I", which the protagonist at first didn't understand, but soon she replied with the exact message. The meaning of that message is to be revealed in the new book.

Takagi mentions that the author has invited the publishers to eat in his suite when they asked him for the manuscript, but, had he been in his position, he would've just bowed and apologized due to the pressure, but also says that it would be strange for Hiura to do something like that since he is bald. Conan asks Takagi if the author is already back in his room, but Takagi says that he's still with the police force as he's a suspect and the forensics aren't done with the room yet.

Hiura is getting angry at the police for not dropping their suspicion for him, stating that he simply couldn't have committed the murder since he was in his suite at the time of the murder, which the publisher confirms as they were eating there from 3 PM to 4.30 PM, also, the author says that he isn't James Bond to be able to use a rope to get to the lower storey via the balcony, pointing out further that the balcony is the line of sight from the table where the publishers were eating.

Conan and Masumi begin their reasoning to reveal the culprit and the trick he used.

=== Resolution ===
<spoiler>
The culprit is '''Keigo Hiura'''. Amongst many of the deliveries which he has ordered to his room, Minazuki came to the suite disguised as room service who delivered red wine. As it is usual for red wine to be decanted before serving, it wouldn't be too unusual to lead the service person into one's kitchen. The publisher mentioned that even though he saw the female deliverer arrive at the suite, since they were too focused on eating as much food as possible, they couldn't have noticed her leaving or staying in the suite.
Masumi explains that while the publishers were eating in the main room, Keigo has strangled the victim in the bath. He asked her to wait there for him and take off the hotel page uniform, since it wouldn't be easy to undress a corpse.
With the help of Takagi, they reconstruct Hiura's method of transporting the corpse to the lower suite. He had put her in the big suitcase after murdering her, and by using a rope and a special knot he easily, after some practice, was able to lower her on the lower balcony after the guests have left. Keigo would hand out manuscripts to the publishers to make it look like he was working on them. At 4.30 PM he left in order to buy cigarettes, but went to the victim's room to place her in front of the door for the bellboy to see her once he delivered the champagne. She explains that the reason beer was spilled in the suitcase was to diminish the smell of the corpse, her wet hair and shampoo. He has removed the shampoo bottle caps from his room since the victim had used them earlier and he wanted to replace them, which he didn't do in time, and he still carried them on him. As conclusive evidence Sera mentions the page uniform which they found on another floor in the trash, which could easily be tested for the culprit's and victim's DNA and sweat.

Keigo admits to the crime, saying that the "man eating" rumors about her were false, instead, she was the one who declined him many times since he was married. He also admits that the book wasn't his opus, but instead it was her's. He got the idea from an old post card, which Takagi mentioned earlier, and after mentioning it to Minazuki, she wanted to choose the title for the book and gave more and more input regarding the story. When he asked her why she did all of it she would just say that one day he would understand.

Conan explains the meaning behind the title. When "'''Denwa, umi watashi'''" (でんわ, うみわたし) (cellphone, sea and I) is translated from Japanese to English and the word order is switched, it can be read as "I, sea tel" which with Romaji pronunciation can be combined and read as "Aishiteru" meaning "I love you". The person who sent the cellphone back in the past was probably her future husband. Keigo says that it is a childish code, to which Conan replies that it doesn't surprise him since it was thought up by a child.

Conan further explains that Minazuki (水無月) is another term for the sixth month of the calendar, June, and that the "Aki" part from Chiaki (千秋) combined with it give Autumn. With both of the words combined and read again it can be pronounced as "'''Outa Jun'''" (おおたじゅん), concluding that Outa Jun has been Chiaki Minazuki's pen name.

On the way back Conan explains the meaning of the book name to [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]]. Suddenly he hears what appears to be a transmission from a bug he planted, but quickly it turns into an uncomfortable sound since Masami has destroyed the bug with a wrench. [[Unknown child|The unknown child]] mentions that she hasn't seen such a bug before, that its range isn't the greatest due to the battery but nonetheless it is interesting to be used in such a way. Sera asks the child if she likes him yet, to which she replies that she's still far away from trusting him, but should the moment arise, Masumi should tell him that she's her little sister from outside the territory.

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] walk down the street while talking about [[The Tragedy of the Red Woman|the red woman case]]. They ask her about her self defense techniques, to which she says that her brother used to send her tapes which she watched many times. She tells them that her mother still lives in the United States, which is a reason why she's now staying in a hotel, since [[Akai family's middle brother|her brother]] didn't want them to live together. Sonoko makes a remark about the cost of living in a hotel, but Masumi tells her that a friend of her father is taking care of it. The groups makes the decision to visit the hotel she is staying at, after which she cancels plans which she had to meet up with her brother.

They ride the elevator up to the 30th floor, where she is staying, and as they leave the elevator Sera mentions that she plans to move out of the hotel soon. In the floor's lobby they see three men apparently waiting. Sera explains to Suzuki that they are waiting for a manuscript of a famous author who also lives in the hotel. Keigo Hiura, a romance author, introduces himself to the group as they pass by his room. After a short exchange with Ran, he invites the waiting men into his suite to eat. Shortly after they gaze upon the food, further room service arrives bearing a wine bottle. Keigo then explains that the person who eats the most will receive the manuscript, which will be tested by weighing on a scale. More food is set to arrive; Beika sushi, pizza, Chinese food and donuts. While they are eating, he will take a bath, so they should be cautious that he doesn't leave and do something. The girls are hanging out on the balcony and Conan is curiously looking around the suite. He spots a room which he wants to enter but Masumi interrupts him, saying that the room is in a mess and that he wouldn't want to trip over her panties. While the author's guests are leaving, so that he can finish writing the manuscript, they discuss his success and what an important role in it his assistant, Chiaki Minazuki, plays, who rents a room below his. Some magazines are suspecting the two of being a couple, two of the men state that their publishing houses have even received threats to keep that "man eating beast" away from him. The girls have ordered room service, pastry, sweets and tea to keep them cheerful while they discuss boys and love, with Conan, who joined them, questioning whether he should really be part of it. They then ask him whether he likes someone. Masumi, being very specific, asks if he likes a girl which he met a long time ago and can't forget. Sonoko believes he likes Ayumi, but Ran thinks it's Ai who has caught his eye. At 6 PM, as they are getting ready to leave, they hear the bellboy scream. Conan drops his backpack and the group runs towards the source of the scream. Suddenly a hand opens the door to Masumi's suite.

When they arrive at the lower storey, they see a confused bellboy and the victim, Chiaki, lying on the floor with strangle marks around her neck with Yoshikawa lines. Sera concludes that she has been dead for approximately two to three hours. Keigo arrives at the door with a Nichiuri publisher following him shortly after, who says that the author just wanted to buy cigarettes. After seeing her dead, the man assumes that it has to have something to do with the threats which they received. Hiura yells at him, asking why he hasn't told him anything, that he had the whole day to do it and that during that time he was just peacefully writing his novel. Conan and Masumi seem to believe that he is the culprit.

The bellboy tells the police that he has spotted her when he was bringing champagne which was ordered to be brought exactly at 6 PM. The key card to the room was on the floor and the door was slightly open. Keigo, who ordered the champagne had trouble with the last page of his novel, so thirty minutes before the whole happening he wanted to go for a smoke and stride through the floors, when he arrived at the scene he was just returning from buying a pack from the vending machine and was climbing the stairs which helps him come up with new ideas. Conan makes a remark that during that time the author wasn't doing anything in particular, finding it strange that he knew that she was murdered while he was writing his book, since it could have also happened afterwards. The author explains himself by saying that she didn't arrive at his room three hours earlier to give him some documents, and when he saw her corpse he assumed her death to be the cause why she didn't come. The publisher then explains, together with Hiura, that they were invited to his room and ate there with more takeout food arriving during the time the murder apparently happened and that there was no possibility for the author to just slip through the door and commit the crime, since the guests were the ones who paid for the food. At 4 PM the guests left and waited outside of the suite which they watched over during the whole time. Keigo came out only once to give a finished piece of work. The three manuscripts are almost finished, but he is stuck on the last page of the third one. At 5:30 PM he printed out everything, gave it them and went to buy cigarettes. The publisher was reading the manuscript when he heard the shout, Hiura then called him with the assumption that something had happened.
[[Juzo Megure|Megure]] questions the men if they know anyone who holds a grudge towards Chiaki, to which the publisher mentions the threats. Keigo says that there was suspicion of them being a couple since they were photographed together, which is also why his wife divorced him. He claims to have relied on her help a lot, saying that she was partially responsible for the book being finished, and that they even had plans to make her an author next year.

When leaving the scene, they see that a lot of people have gathered on the floor. Conan spots someone in the crowd who looks like Sera but appears to be a middle schooler. He tries to find her, but is interrupted by Ran. He immediately connects her with the girl from the mobile phone.
Sera tells the group that the author is the murderer, saying that the door couldn't have been used and that even though one would have to be very brave, the balcony is the only other way. She asks Conan whether he thinks the same to which he agrees.

====Part 2====

[[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] asks [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] and [[Masumi Sera|Masumi]] if they have taken shampoo bottle caps away from the crime scene, but they haven't, since they only reached the door and didn't go further. He also mentions that somebody has thrown over the table, which landed in the victim's suitcase in the room with beer which was spilled in it. He mentions that the suitcase was quite large, even though there weren't many things in it - clothing, make up, a laptop, a bag and an old post card. The twenty year old post cast was written by Hiura, stating that if he was to use the story he would use the recipient's name for the protagonist. It was addressed to Outa Jun. Ran quickly mentions that Outa Jun is, in fact, the name of the protagonist in the author's book "The cellphone, the sea and I". She quickly explains the plot of the book to the group. A scratched mobile phone is found on the beach, a model which hasn't been released yet, with the message "How old are you?", after a few exchanges via messages between the person who found the phone and the one who was sending the messages, it can be concluded that the person is sending messages from the future. The answer to the question who was sending the messages was "The cellphone, the sea and I", which the protagonist at first didn't understand, but soon she replied with the exact message. The meaning of that message is to be revealed in the new book.

Takagi mentions that the author has invited the publishers to eat in his suite when they asked him for the manuscript, but, had he been in his position, he would've just bowed and apologized due to the pressure, but also says that it would be strange for Hiura to do something like that since he is bald. Conan asks Takagi if the author is already back in his room, but Takagi says that he's still with the police force as he's a suspect and the forensics aren't done with the room yet.

Hiura is getting angry at the police for not dropping their suspicion for him, stating that he simply couldn't have committed the murder since he was in his suite at the time of the murder, which the publisher confirms as they were eating there from 3 PM to 4.30 PM, also, the author says that he isn't James Bond to be able to use a rope to get to the lower storey via the balcony, pointing out further that the balcony is the line of sight from the table where the publishers were eating.

Conan and Masumi begin their reasoning to reveal the culprit and the trick he used.

=== Resolution ===

The culprit is '''Keigo Hiura'''. Amongst many of the deliveries which he has ordered to his room, Minazuki came to the suite disguised as room service who delivered red wine. As it is usual for red wine to be decanted before serving, it wouldn't be too unusual to lead the service person into one's kitchen. The publisher mentioned that even though he saw the female deliverer arrive at the suite, since they were too focused on eating as much food as possible, they couldn't have noticed her leaving or staying in the suite.
Masumi explains that while the publishers were eating in the main room, Keigo has strangled the victim in the bath. He asked her to wait there for him and take off the hotel page uniform, since it wouldn't be easy to undress a corpse.
With the help of Takagi, they reconstruct Hiura's method of transporting the corpse to the lower suite. He had put her in the big suitcase after murdering her, and by using a rope and a special knot he easily, after some practice, was able to lower her on the lower balcony after the guests have left. Keigo would hand out manuscripts to the publishers to make it look like he was working on them. At 4.30 PM he left in order to buy cigarettes, but went to the victim's room to place her in front of the door for the bellboy to see her once he delivered the champagne. She explains that the reason beer was spilled in the suitcase was to diminish the smell of the corpse, her wet hair and shampoo. He has removed the shampoo bottle caps from his room since the victim had used them earlier and he wanted to replace them, which he didn't do in time, and he still carried them on him. As conclusive evidence Sera mentions the page uniform which they found on another floor in the trash, which could easily be tested for the culprit's and victim's DNA and sweat.

Keigo admits to the crime, saying that the "man eating" rumours about her were false, instead, she was the one who declined him many times since he was married. He also admits that the book wasn't his opus, but instead it was her's. He got the idea from an old post card, which Takagi mentioned earlier, and after mentioning it to Minazuki, she wanted to choose the title for the book and gave more and more input regarding the story. When he asked her why she did all of it she would just say that one day he would understand.

Conan explains the meaning behind the title. When "'''Denwa, umi watashi'''" (でんわ, うみわたし) (cellphone, sea and I) is translated from Japanese to English and the word order is switched, it can be read as "I, sea tel" which with Romaji pronounciation can be combined and read as "Aishiteru" meaning "I love you". The person who sent the cellphone back in the past was probably her future husband. Keigo says that it is a childish code, to which Conan replies that it doesn't surprise him since it was thought up by a child.

Conan further explains that Minazuki (水無月) is another term for the sixth month of the calendar, June, and that the "Aki" part from Chiaki (千秋) combined with it give Autumn. With both of the words combined and read again it can be pronounced as "'''Outa Jun'''" (おおたじゅん), concluding that Outa Jun has been Chiaki Minazuki's pen name.

On the way back Conan explains the meaning of the book name to [[Ran Mouri|Ran]] and [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]]. Suddenly he hears what appears to be a transmission from a bug he planted, but quickly it turns into an uncomfortable sound since Masami has destroyed the bug with a wrench. [[Unknown child|The unknown child]] mentions that she hasn't seen such a bug before, that its range isn't the greatest due to the battery but nonetheless it is interesting to be used in such a way. Sera asks the child if she likes him yet, to which she replies that she's still far away from trusting him, but should the moment arise, Masumi should tell him that she's her little sister from outside the territory.

As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Professor Agasa made for him. He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Professor Agasa. In some situations, when there's only Ran, Sonoko, and himself, he will use Sonoko instead to solve the case at hand. As Conan, Shinichi tries to behave like a child. He refers to Ran as "Ran-neechan" (''nee-chan'' meaning older sister, a common nickname Japanese children give to teenagers and young adults they look up to), and refers to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan" (''nii-chan'' meaning older brother). He also refers to Kogoro as "Oji-san" or "Occhan" (both meaning Uncle), although he also does this as Shinichi. As Shinichi, he refers to Conan as usually "Conan-kun" or the "Kid in the Glasses". Shinichi treats Conan as a separate person completely, thinking for example, "changing back into Conan".

Conan remains very close to Ran, who in return is very protective of him. However, because Ran is unaware of his true identity, Conan often finds himself in awkward situations with her, such as when she confessed her feeling for Shinichi to him and when she made him bathe with her at a hot spring.

Conan's intelligence remains intact even though he has shrunken into a child. As Shinichi, his deductive ability earned him the monikers "[[Wikipedia:Heisei|Heisei]] Holmes" and "Savior of the Japanese police force". Conan maintains an extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases and escape tricky situations. Conan tries to speak in a child-like manner when dealing with adults, but he often gets caught up in the current case and begins speaking like an adult, referring to advanced topics and using reasoning much too complex for a normal child. When this happens, he often tries to pass it off as "something [he] heard on TV" or "taught by uncle Kogoro/professor Agasa/Shinichi-niichan". Conan tends to act more like himself around the [[Detective Boys]], even to the point that they find it odd when he acts like a child around adults. Conan has dark brown hair which mostly hangs downwards just above his blue eyes, but there are also a few strands that stick up at the front and back of his head. He also wears a red bowtie and his dad's old glasses. All of Shinichi's detective skills carry over to his Conan form, although Conan does not the have the reputation Shinichi had. He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to remember every detail of an investigation or other topics he cares about, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Conan's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony that other people miss, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading in his "first childhood". There are only few people like [[Heiji]], [[Kaito]] and [[Hakuba]] who are as intelligent as Conan.

As a child, Conan can attract less suspicion while investigating crime scenes, get away with searching people's personal property, and ask innocent questions without setting suspects on guard, although it comes with the drawback of not having Shinichi's authority or reputation. Conan is just as skilled as Shinichi in soccer, but a lot less powerful because he only has the strength of a young child. To make up for this, Conan uses Agasa's Power-enhancing kick shoes. Conan uses signature, powerful precision kick to knock out criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Like Shinichi, Conan's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing, snowboarding, and ice-skating.

Conan also has some skill with firearms despite the recoil being much more severe for a child's body. He shoots out a bus window during a bus hijacking, and precisely grazes Ran's leg to render her useless as a hostage in the second movie.

Conan's nimbleness is especially noticeable in the non-[[canon]] movies. For example, in the sixth movie, Conan is seen to fight with various antagonists, and he even holds his own against Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer who bests even Ran in combat. In the fourteenth movie, Conan does a back flip on his skateboard in order to avoid being killed by the blimp's hijackers. Conan shows a proclivity for skateboarding. In the movies and anime, Conan can easily perform very complicated tricks and dodges with his skateboard at high speed.

Conan cannot sing on key in the slightest so he is often accused of being [[Wikipedia:tone deaf|tone deaf]]. Despite being a hilariously awful singer, Conan has [[Wikipedia:perfect pitch|perfect pitch]] and can identify notes accurately even in difficult contexts like the sound of phone button presses forming a melody. In Episode 11: The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case, he knows that the piano is in tune and deciphers a message at the end just by listening to the notes that are played. Haibara directly described Shinichi Kudo as having perfect pitch in the last scenes of the twelfth Detective Conan movie, [[Full Score of Fear]]. He also manages to replicate and sing dial tones for a phone, showing that the reason he can't sing is because he simply doesn't have ''relative'' pitch. In File 728 (Episode 614), Conan stated he isn't very knowledgeable about music but identified the untuned piano key whereupon Haibara joked about his sharp ears despite being tone-deaf.

Also, to be like his favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes, he plays the violin. This was confirmed in movie 12 of the 'Full Score of Fear' when he played "Amazing Grace" for Ran. However, he is stumped on what Ran meant when she said, "He has a funny habit when he plays."

== Plot overview ==

=== Initial pursuit ===
After Shinichi becomes Conan, he sets out to find the men in black almost immediately. At the suggestion of Agasa, he moves in with Ran and Kogoro, hoping that cases related to them come by. Pretty soon, a case involving a woman name [[Akemi Miyano]] (using the alias Masami Hirota) appears. Akemi robs a bank for the men in black in the hopes that they will free her sister from their organization. Conan is unable to realize the case's connection to the organization until after the men in black have shot Akemi and left her for dead rather than give up such a valuable asset as her sister. In her dying moments, Akemi warns Conan of the danger of the organization.<ref>[[Volume 2#File 013 - The Missing Man|Volume 2, Files 13-16: "The Missing Man"]]</ref>

Conan runs across the men in black again on a bullet train, this time learning their codenames: [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]].

At a game convention, Conan meets a third man in black named [[Tequila]], only to have him die in an explosion meant for someone else. Conan learns about a meeting place from the murderer, but just before he reaches the bar an explosion set by the men in black destroys the place entirely, leaving Conan without any leads.

Ran quickly deduces that Shinichi is in London as well. She asks some Londoners about a Japanese boy, and they give her directions, without specifying it was actually a six-year-old they saw. In a phone booth, Conan takes the pill originally meant for his return trip to Tokyo in order to conceal his identity from Ran. During this time, he manages to confess his feelings to her. He doesn't usually pay much attention to them. Once she told Conan that Ai has romantic feelings for him because she looked at him ten times in a short span of time, saying that the only time a girl would do that is if she likes the boy or the boy has something on his face. Conan simply pushes it off as Ai checking on her "lab mouse," but at night, in bed, Conan asks Ai if he has something on his face.

Conan's mother helped him out once to keep his secret identity from being exposed to Ran by creating an alibi for him.

Conan treats [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]] as a member of his own family, like an uncle. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help. Agasa's willingness to help whenever possible makes Shinichi's life as Conan more convenient. He was the one who created most of Conan's gadgets, including his power shoes and tracking glasses. He willingly plays Conan's case solving mouthpiece when Conan lacks someone else convenient to use. When Conan needs something, such as information regarding past cases, he usually asks Agasa to get it. Agasa often acts as a chauffeur because he is trustworthy and the only adult with a car regularly available.

Agasa often worries about Shinichi, especially when he thinks Shinichi might be getting over his head. Agasa almost always responds positively to Shinichi's requests, but doesn't like it when Shinichi hides the reasons for it, especially if it is dangerous.

====Heiji Hattori====

When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals, especially after Kudo bests Heiji in their first case. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act like an older brother towards him, much to the annoyance of Conan. Since then, the two have become closest friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They tend to stick together on cases, although sometimes this is because Heiji forces the less enthusiastic Conan to come along. While fond of Heiji as a fellow detective he can relate to, Conan finds Heiji's antics occasionally annoying. Much to Conan's chagrin, Heiji even convinces others that Conan is his disciple. Conan especially dislikes Heiji's dangerous habit of unthinkingly calling Conan 'Kudo' when others are present.

Heiji still maintains some of his original feelings of rivalry, and gets annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better , and will often go to great lengths to show that the "west" (Osaka) is better than the "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. both victims of the [[APTX 4869]]), she finds it easier to talk to him. She certainly has no qualms about teasing him, and is more than willing to poke a hole in his ego. While Conan initially was disgusted by Ai's ties to the Black Organization, especially with how she introduced herself, seeing her remorse and pain has improved his opinion of her. He is repeatedly protective of her and tries to give her hope when her fear of the men in black is overwhelming.

However, they both become quite jealous of Conan whenever Ayumi shows gestures of affection towards him (usually a small kiss on the cheek). While Conan initially only tolerated their presence, he has grown fond of them despite their relative immaturity.

Even though [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] do not yet know who's interfering with their operations, Gin has been shown to be curious who "that guy" is, referring to Conan. In the movie [[The Raven Chaser]], Gin tries to catch a glimpse of Conan's face from a helicopter, but fails when Conan successfully downs the helicopter. Conan seems to have a very bitter hatred towards them, and this only increases as more people are targeted by the Black Organization.

====Vermouth====
[[Vermouth]] seems to have great personal interest in Conan, referring to him as the Black Organization's 'Silver Bullet'. She also protects Conan, probably because when she was disguising as a serial killer in New York she was saved by Conan (Shinichi at the time) and Ran. When the Organization plans on killing Kogoro, and later Conan, she strongly objects to a degree where Gin suspects whether Kogoro is related to Vermouth. Because of this, Conan does not react strongly when she is mentioned, as opposed to Haibara. He also seems to consider her less of a threat than the other members because he is able to bargain with her about Haibara and knows Vermouth is keeping his secret for personal reasons.

====Bourbon====
[[Tooru Amuro]] (codenamed Bourbon) has attached himself to the Mouri Detective Agency as Kogoro's "apprentice". Conan initially treats him in a somewhat friendly manner, though he privately thinks "another annoying person's showed up" when he learns Amuro will be joining Kogoro on cases. After learning of Amuro's membership in the Black Organization, though, Conan has been relatively nervous about him being near Ran. He's become more cautious and is somewhat confused by Amuro's helpful behavior, though he attempts to pretend nothing has changed. His bond with Amuro later seemed to improve when he learns that Amuro is actually an undercover operative from Japanese Secret Police when the two exchanges smile in Cafe Poirot.<ref>[[Volume 85#File 897 - Scarlet Truth|Volumes 85, File 897: "Scarlet Truth"]]</ref>

Before being shrunk, Shinichi encountered [[Kaitou Kid]] once during the Clock Tower heist, though they did not meet face-to-face. In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi has become Conan, Kid disguises himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki family's Black Star pearl. When Conan corners him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid implies that he stole all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ends up being a bluff, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid in subsequent encounters. Conan stops Kid from escaping with the jewel often enough that Conan has gained reputation with the press as Kid's "natural enemy". In several instances Conan appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence, and seems excited by the chance to catch Kid again; appropriately, Kid seems to find Conan dangerous enough to warrant specific measures to keep him distracted.

Conan does not buy in to Kid's reputation as a mysterious, uncatchable phantom, saying once "He's only a thief that uses magic",<ref>Anime Episode 515: Kaitou Kid's Teleportation Magic</ref> and encouraging police officers that Kid is only a man and he can be arrested. However, if necessary, the two can put their rivalry aside for a little while and work together.<ref>[[Kaitou Kid and the Four Masterpieces]]</ref> Conan has something of a gentleman's agreement with Kaitou Kid, in that he doesn't try to find or catch the thief outside of heists. In several instances, when Kid does Conan a favor, such as saving Genta's life<ref>[[Big Adventure in the Eccentric Mansion]]</ref>, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape mostly unhindered. This exchange of favors can sometimes become a bit unbalanced; in exchange for not giving Kid away on a train Conan has Kid face down the [[Black Organization]] in disguise, and because Kid narrowly escapes an explosion with his life, he says that Conan now owes ''him'' one.<ref>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 7 (824): "Mystery Train (Final Destination)"</ref>

In the non-[[canon]] movies, it is implied that Kid knows Conan's identity; he even helps Conan maintain his cover by disguising himself as Shinichi so that a suspicious Ran would stop suspecting Conan. However, this has not been confirmed by Gosho Aoyama, nor has it been implied in the manga.

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], [[Yusaku Kudo]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], [[Heiji Hattori]], and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] of the Black Organization also knows about Conan's secret. Later, in Episode 508 of the anime, [[Eisuke Hondou]] confirms Conan's identity as [[Shinichi Kudo]] straight from him. In manga chapter 812-814, [[Subaru Okiya]] ([[Shuichi Akai]] in disguise) confirms that Conan is Shinichi. [[Masumi Sera]] may also be suspicious that Conan is Shinichi Kudo.

The 3rd, 8th, and 14th movies also demonstrate that Kaitou Kid apparently knows Conan's identity and acts to protect it. However, this has yet to be backed up by the original artist, Gosho Aoyama, in the manga or (as would follow) the anime main series.

Professor Agasa has made many gadgets for Conan, including a tranquilizer wristwatch, voice-modulating bow tie, kick-enhancing shoes, tracking/binocular glasses, stretchable suspenders, and a solar powered skateboard. Conan uses the first two regularly to create "Sleeping Kogoro", and the glasses and other gadgets to investigate cases or catch criminals. Agasa also created radio badges and watch flashlights Conan and the other Detective Boys.

Gosho Aoyama (and Shinichi, in the story) got the name 'Conan Edogawa' from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories, and Edogawa Rampo, the pen name of Japanese mystery fiction writer Hirai Tarō. Hirai Tarō himself got the pen name "Edogawa Rampo" from a transliteration of "Edgar Allan Poe." Pronouncing Poe's name in a Japanese accent sounds like 'Edogawa Rampo.'

== Character inspiration ==
Gosho said Conan's hairstyle was designed in about one minute. He smoothed [[Yaiba]]'s hair and added a tuft modeled after the apostrophe hairstyle of Kabu from [[Wikipedia:Sally_the_Witch|Sally the Witch]]. The tuft on hair on the top of Conan's head comes from the character Shichimi in [[Wikipedia:Niji Iro Tōgarashi|Niji Iro Tōgarashi]]. Conan's clothes were modeled after [[Wikipedia:Shichi-Go-San|Shichi-Go-San (7-5-3) clothing]]. Young Gosho wore a bow tie and shorts in his Shichi-Go-San photographs. Gosho tries to restrict Conan's gadgets to what Conan can wear, but he has run out of ideas lately. The use of glasses as a disguise was modeled after [[Wikipedia:Superman|Superman]]'s Clark Kent. As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Professor Agasa made for him. He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Professor Agasa. In some situations, when there's only Ran, Sonoko, and himself, he will use Sonoko instead to solve the case at hand. As Conan, Shinichi tries to behave like a child. He refers to Ran as "Ran-neechan" (''nee-chan'' meaning older sister, a common nickname Japanese children give to teenagers and young adults they look up to), and refers to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan" (''nii-chan'' meaning older brother). He also refers to Kogoro as "Oji-san" or "Occhan" (both meaning Uncle), although he also does this as Shinichi. As Shinichi, he refers to Conan as usually "Conan-kun" or the "Kid in the Glasses". Shinichi treats Conan as a separate person completely, thinking for example, "changing back into Conan".

Conan remains very close to Ran, who in return is very protective of him. However, because Ran is unaware of his true identity, Conan often finds himself in awkward situations with her, such as when she confessed her feeling for Shinichi to him and when she made him bathe with her at a hot spring.

Conan's intelligence remains intact even though he has shrunken into a child. As Shinichi, his deductive ability earned him the monikers "[[Wikipedia:Heisei|Heisei]] Holmes" and "Savior of the Japanese police force". Conan maintains an extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases and escape tricky situations. Conan tries to speak in a child-like manner when dealing with adults, but he often gets caught up in the current case and begins speaking like an adult, referring to advanced topics and using reasoning much too complex for a normal child. When this happens, he often tries to pass it off as "something [he] heard on TV" or "taught by uncle Kogoro/professor Agasa/Shinichi-niichan". Conan tends to act more like himself around the [[Detective Boys]], even to the point that they find it odd when he acts like a child around adults. Conan has dark brown hair which mostly hangs downwards just above his blue eyes, but there are also a few strands that stick up at the front and back of his head. He also wears a red bowtie and his dad's old glasses. All of Shinichi's detective skills carry over to his Conan form, although Conan does not the have the reputation Shinichi had. He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to remember every detail of an investigation or other topics he cares about, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Conan's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony that other people miss, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading in his "first childhood". There are only few people like [[Heiji]], [[Kaito]] and [[Hakuba]] who are as intelligent as Conan.

As a child, Conan can attract less suspicion while investigating crime scenes, get away with searching people's personal property, and ask innocent questions without setting suspects on guard, although it comes with the drawback of not having Shinichi's authority or reputation. Conan is just as skilled as Shinichi in soccer, but a lot less powerful because he only has the strength of a young child. To make up for this, Conan uses Agasa's Power-enhancing kick shoes. Conan uses signature, powerful precision kick to knock out criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Like Shinichi, Conan's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing, snowboarding, and ice-skating.

Conan also has some skill with firearms despite the recoil being much more severe for a child's body. He shoots out a bus window during a bus hijacking, and precisely grazes Ran's leg to render her useless as a hostage in the second movie.

Conan's nimbleness is especially noticeable in the non-[[canon]] movies. For example, in the sixth movie, Conan is seen to fight with various antagonists, and he even holds his own against Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer who bests even Ran in combat. In the fourteenth movie, Conan does a back flip on his skateboard in order to avoid being killed by the blimp's hijackers. Conan shows a proclivity for skateboarding. In the movies and anime, Conan can easily perform very complicated tricks and dodges with his skateboard at high speed.

Conan cannot sing on key in the slightest so he is often accused of being [[Wikipedia:tone deaf|tone deaf]]. Despite being a hilariously awful singer, Conan has [[Wikipedia:perfect pitch|perfect pitch]] and can identify notes accurately even in difficult contexts like the sound of phone button presses forming a melody. In Episode 11: The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case, he knows that the piano is in tune and deciphers a message at the end just by listening to the notes that are played. Haibara directly described Shinichi Kudo as having perfect pitch in the last scenes of the twelfth Detective Conan movie, [[Full Score of Fear]]. He also manages to replicate and sing dial tones for a phone, showing that the reason he can't sing is because he simply doesn't have ''relative'' pitch. In File 728 (Episode 614), Conan stated he isn't very knowledgeable about music but identified the untuned piano key whereupon Haibara joked about his sharp ears despite being tone-deaf.

Also, to be like his favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes, he plays the violin. This was confirmed in movie 12 of the 'Full Score of Fear' when he played "Amazing Grace" for Ran. However, he is stumped on what Ran meant when she said, "He has a funny habit when he plays."

== Plot overview ==

=== Initial pursuit ===
After Shinichi becomes Conan, he sets out to find the men in black almost immediately. At the suggestion of Agasa, he moves in with Ran and Kogoro, hoping that cases related to them come by. Pretty soon, a case involving a woman name [[Akemi Miyano]] (using the alias Masami Hirota) appears. Akemi robs a bank for the men in black in the hopes that they will free her sister from their organization. Conan is unable to realize the case's connection to the organization until after the men in black have shot Akemi and left her for dead rather than give up such a valuable asset as her sister. In her dying moments, Akemi warns Conan of the danger of the organization.<ref>[[Volume 2#File 013 - The Missing Man|Volume 2, Files 13-16: "The Missing Man"]]</ref>

Conan runs across the men in black again on a bullet train, this time learning their codenames: [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]].

At a game convention, Conan meets a third man in black named [[Tequila]], only to have him die in an explosion meant for someone else. Conan learns about a meeting place from the murderer, but just before he reaches the bar an explosion set by the men in black destroys the place entirely, leaving Conan without any leads.

Ran quickly deduces that Shinichi is in London as well. She asks some Londoners about a Japanese boy, and they give her directions, without specifying it was actually a six-year-old they saw. In a phone booth, Conan takes the pill originally meant for his return trip to Tokyo in order to conceal his identity from Ran. During this time, he manages to confess his feelings to her. Once she told Conan that Ai has romantic feelings for him because she looked at him ten times in a short span of time, saying that the only time a girl would do that is if she likes the boy or the boy has something on his face. Conan simply pushes it off as Ai checking on her "lab mouse," but at night, in bed, Conan asks Ai if he has something on his face.

Conan's mother helped him out once to keep his secret identity from being exposed to Ran by creating an alibi for him.

Conan treats [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]] as a member of his own family, like an uncle. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help. Agasa's willingness to help whenever possible makes Shinichi's life as Conan more convenient. He was the one who created most of Conan's gadgets, including his power shoes and tracking glasses. He willingly plays Conan's case solving mouthpiece when Conan lacks someone else convenient to use. When Conan needs something, such as information regarding past cases, he usually asks Agasa to get it. Agasa often acts as a chauffeur because he is trustworthy and the only adult with a car regularly available.

Agasa often worries about Shinichi, especially when he thinks Shinichi might be getting over his head. Agasa almost always responds positively to Shinichi's requests, but doesn't like it when Shinichi hides the reasons for it, especially if it is dangerous.

====Heiji Hattori====

When they first meet, Conan and [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]] seem bound to become lifelong rivals, especially after Kudo bests Heiji in their first case. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act like an older brother towards him, much to the annoyance of Conan. Since then, the two have become closest friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They tend to stick together on cases, although sometimes this is because Heiji forces the less enthusiastic Conan to come along. While fond of Heiji as a fellow detective he can relate to, Conan finds Heiji's antics occasionally annoying. Much to Conan's chagrin, Heiji even convinces others that Conan is his disciple. Conan especially dislikes Heiji's dangerous habit of unthinkingly calling Conan 'Kudo' when others are present.

Heiji still maintains some of his original feelings of rivalry, and gets annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better , and will often go to great lengths to show that the "west" (Osaka) is better than the "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. both victims of the [[APTX 4869]]), she finds it easier to talk to him. She certainly has no qualms about teasing him, and is more than willing to poke a hole in his ego. While Conan initially was disgusted by Ai's ties to the Black Organization, especially with how she introduced herself, seeing her remorse and pain has improved his opinion of her. He is repeatedly protective of her and tries to give her hope when her fear of the men in black is overwhelming.

However, they both become quite jealous of Conan whenever Ayumi shows gestures of affection towards him (usually a small kiss on the cheek). While Conan initially only tolerated their presence, he has grown fond of them despite their relative immaturity.

Even though [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] do not yet know who's interfering with their operations, Gin has been shown to be curious who "that guy" is, referring to Conan. In the movie [[The Raven Chaser]], Gin tries to catch a glimpse of Conan's face from a helicopter, but fails when Conan successfully downs the helicopter. Conan seems to have a very bitter hatred towards them, and this only increases as more people are targeted by the Black Organization.

====Vermouth====
[[Vermouth]] seems to have great personal interest in Conan, referring to him as the Black Organization's 'Silver Bullet'. She also protects Conan, probably because when she was disguising as a serial killer in New York she was saved by Conan (Shinichi at the time) and Ran. When the Organization plans on killing Kogoro, and later Conan, she strongly objects to a degree where Gin suspects whether Kogoro is related to Vermouth. Because of this, Conan does not react strongly when she is mentioned, as opposed to Haibara. He also seems to consider her less of a threat than the other members because he is able to bargain with her about Haibara and knows Vermouth is keeping his secret for personal reasons.

====Bourbon====
[[Tooru Amuro]] (codenamed Bourbon) has attached himself to the Mouri Detective Agency as Kogoro's "apprentice". Conan initially treats him in a somewhat friendly manner, though he privately thinks "another annoying person's showed up" when he learns Amuro will be joining Kogoro on cases. After learning of Amuro's membership in the Black Organization, though, Conan has been relatively nervous about him being near Ran. He's become more cautious and is somewhat confused by Amuro's helpful behavior, though he attempts to pretend nothing has changed. Before being shrunk, Shinichi encountered [[Kaitou Kid]] once during the Clock Tower heist, though they did not meet face-to-face. In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi has become Conan, Kid disguises himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki family's Black Star pearl. When Conan corners him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid implies that he stole all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ends up being a bluff, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid in subsequent encounters. Conan stops Kid from escaping with the jewel often enough that Conan has gained reputation with the press as Kid's "natural enemy". In several instances Conan appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence, and seems excited by the chance to catch Kid again; appropriately, Kid seems to find Conan dangerous enough to warrant specific measures to keep him distracted.

Conan does not buy in to Kid's reputation as a mysterious, uncatchable phantom, saying once "He's only a thief that uses magic",<ref>Anime Episode 515: Kaitou Kid's Teleportation Magic</ref> and encouraging police officers that Kid is only a man and he can be arrested. However, if necessary, the two can put their rivalry aside for a little while and work together.<ref>[[Kaitou Kid and the Four Masterpieces]]</ref> Conan has something of a gentleman's agreement with Kaitou Kid, in that he doesn't try to find or catch the thief outside of heists. In several instances, when Kid does Conan a favor, such as saving Genta's life<ref>[[Big Adventure in the Eccentric Mansion]]</ref>, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape mostly unhindered. This exchange of favors can sometimes become a bit unbalanced; in exchange for not giving Kid away on a train Conan has Kid face down the [[Black Organization]] in disguise, and because Kid narrowly escapes an explosion with his life, he says that Conan now owes ''him'' one.<ref>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 7 (824): "Mystery Train (Final Destination)"</ref>

In the non-[[canon]] movies, it is implied that Kid knows Conan's identity; he even helps Conan maintain his cover by disguising himself as Shinichi so that a suspicious Ran would stop suspecting Conan. However, this has not been confirmed by Gosho Aoyama, nor has it been implied in the manga.

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are [[Hiroshi Agasa]], [[Yusaku Kudo]], [[Yukiko Kudo]], [[Heiji Hattori]], and [[Ai Haibara]]. [[Vermouth]] of the Black Organization also knows about Conan's secret. Later, in Episode 508 of the anime, [[Eisuke Hondou]] confirms Conan's identity as [[Shinichi Kudo]] straight from him. In manga chapter 812-814, [[Subaru Okiya]] ([[Shuichi Akai]] in disguise) confirms that Conan is Shinichi. [[Masumi Sera]] may also be suspicious that Conan is Shinichi Kudo.

The 3rd, 8th, and 14th movies also demonstrate that Kaitou Kid apparently knows Conan's identity and acts to protect it. However, this has yet to be backed up by the original artist, Gosho Aoyama, in the manga or (as would follow) the anime main series.

Professor Agasa has made many gadgets for Conan, including a tranquilizer wristwatch, voice-modulating bow tie, kick-enhancing shoes, tracking/binocular glasses, stretchable suspenders, and a solar powered skateboard. Conan uses the first two regularly to create "Sleeping Kogoro", and the glasses and other gadgets to investigate cases or catch criminals. Agasa also created radio badges and watch flashlights Conan and the other Detective Boys.

Gosho Aoyama (and Shinichi, in the story) got the name 'Conan Edogawa' from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories, and Edogawa Rampo, the pen name of Japanese mystery fiction writer Hirai Tarō. Hirai Tarō himself got the pen name "Edogawa Rampo" from a transliteration of "Edgar Allan Poe." Pronouncing Poe's name in a Japanese accent sounds like 'Edogawa Rampo.'

== Character inspiration ==
Gosho said Conan's hairstyle was designed in about one minute. He smoothed [[Yaiba]]'s hair and added a tuft modeled after the apostrophe hairstyle of Kabu from [[Wikipedia:Sally_the_Witch|Sally the Witch]]. The tuft on hair on the top of Conan's head comes from the character Shichimi in [[Wikipedia:Niji Iro Tōgarashi|Niji Iro Tōgarashi]]. Conan's clothes were modeled after [[Wikipedia:Shichi-Go-San|Shichi-Go-San (7-5-3) clothing]]. Young Gosho wore a bow tie and shorts in his Shichi-Go-San photographs. [[Conan]], [[Ran Mouri|Ran]], [[Sonoko Suzuki|Sonoko]] and [[Masumi Sera|Sera]] are walking through the woods as Sera explains the reason for their excursion, that she has been asked by her [[Akai family's middle brother|brother]] to visit his former classmates in order to solve a case, as well as the fact that herself, and both her older brothers have different surnames.
Sonoko and Ran spot a red woman lurking in the woods and describe her to the group, which is interrupted by Conan falling and discovering a swamp.

The group reaches the villa which looks normal except for the fact that its door is painted red. As they stand outside they are soon greated by the other guests, Tamami Minegishi, Sumika Kawana and Masaie Hakuya and Jinsuke Ninda who arrive together. Conan asks Jinsuke about his bag to which he replies that he carries a Baseball bat with him for self-defense purposes.
Inside the villa, the group is enjoying a delicious meal prepared by Tamami, however the mood of the discussion swiftly changes after Ran mentions the person they spotted earlier in the woods. The guests then tell the story of the murder case involving the Red Woman, from 15 years ago and the disappearance of Satoko from 3 years ago after which they have found her dead body.

The guests further tell the group that since 2 years ago, strange things have started to happen, such as a broken window and a lot of apples in a room, a water tank filled with red blossoms and red paint on the front door which is the reason for it to be painted completely red since the color wasn't removable.

After dessert, the group divided itself into a few smaller ones; Sera and Conan went outside to find hints about the red woman, Jinsuke went shopping, Tamami cleaned the dishes, Masaie the bathroom and toilet and Sumika the upper floor, Sonoko and Ran are helping out as well - while cleaning they hear Sumika's vacuum cleaner through the roof as it appears to be a powerful one and have a short conversation with Tamami, who is behind closed kitchen doors, regarding the dinner. Shortly afterwards, Sumika joins them and asks for their help to clean the other rooms, on their way through the house they discover that Masaie has apparently cleaned the bath already and filled the tub with water which is just right for taking a bath. Sonoko comments on the water's color, which is green, to which Sumika replies that it's a special bath salt, then the three of them decide to take a bath together.

Jinsuke returns from his trip, together with Masumi and Conan, whom he picked up on the way. After a short exchange they hear a scream from the bathroom where the bath tub has been filled with tomatoes. As Jinsuke mentions that Masaie cleaned the bath and toilet, Masumi rushes to the bath tub only to find '''Hakuya's lifeless body''' drowned in it.

Conan takes a look around the room and sees female underwear, Ran's towel drops and as he sees her naked before his eyes it is implied that blood gushes out of his nose and Conan can be heard and seen falling and fainting.

==== Evil Spirit ====

With the arrival of the Nagano police, the murder case and details, such as the fact that no blood traces where found in the bathroom is explained to [[Yui Uehara|Yui Uehara]], who remembers Conan from earlier cases. As the other guests are in distraught over Masaie's death, their whereabouts are told to Yui, Tamami was preparing dinner, Sumika was cleaning rooms and Jinsuke went shopping.
It is mentioned that the water was coloured green-ish due to the bath salts, Masaie lost conscious due to a head injury caused by dumbbells, which also kept his body under water, which wasn't visible due to the floating tomatoes in the bathtub. Jinsuke accuses Masaie's murder to be the work of the Red haired woman, to which Yui explains that there was a second body found in the lake murder case, Takeno's body, which was identified by using DNA from her navel cord which her mother kept. After Jinsuke's baseball bat is inspected and made clear that it is not the murder weapon, it is confirmed that it indeed was the dumbbell which was used. The group also mentions how odd it appears to be, for a fan to be in the room. Masumi and Conan experiment with a tomato, realizing who the murderer is. While Sonoko is joking around with Ran, a power failure happens and '''Sumika is attacked''' by the Red haired woman.

| description = During the power outage, while Sumika's waits in her room, she hears a knocking sound on the window. Curiously she stands up and open the window, only to be surprised and attacked by what appears to be a casually dressed, long haired woman.

With the whole group together in the living room, under candle light is Uehara-san tending to Sumika's wounds, as she tells others that for the past ten years there were strange occurences in the woods. Holiday villas have been vandalised, not only have pranks happened, such as where the group is staying, but rather as if somebody had broken into the houses and lived there.
With lightning striking outside, and the candle light perishing, a silhouette of a woman is seen again in the woods. Members of the group panic, afraid of getting murdered by the rampaging woman, Sera takes control of the situation, lighting the candle and telling them that there is no such thing as a witch or monster, except in fantasy worlds, that it has to be a human being, which she, with her Jeet kune do and Ran, with her karate, can handle. She is introduced to Yui, and states that she lived in the United States for three years, but missed Japan, and returned to '''"meet the magician once again"''', only for that reason.

==== Revenge ====

Yui Uehara, Masami and Conan conduct a search in the rooms of the guests, to no avail, since they don't fine knife-like objects or wigs. While they consider Sumika faking the attack on her, the duo clears up the possibility due to the nature of her cut, which was horizontal. A woman is seen lurking outside again, which, although not connected, startles Uehara after her being mentioned.The group checks some pictures which point to the red hints of all the previous 'pranks'. In one the pictures, Satoko is seen wearing a cardigan, to which Yui points out that on the day she was found she was wearing a red coat. She points out that the ones who found the knife 3 years ago were [[Kansuke Yamato|Kansuke Yamato]] and [[Taka'aki Morofushi|Taka'aki Morofushi]], while they were still attending police academy. Morofushi was sure that the bones which were found belonged to the red woman, while Yamato was opposed to the idea, even after it had been proven, he refused to accept it.

At the moment, the two of them are questioning the retired policeman who was on duty during the past case, who is now working at a Pachinko salon. It turns out, the now retired policeman was afraid of the red haired woman and couldn't follow her deeper into the woods, he had given a false report to the police, in which he hid the fact that she threw her knife at him, which traumatized him, forcing him to retire. After Yui explains the mistake from 15 years ago to Conan and Masumi, they both are sure about the identity of the murderer.
Shortly after the trio joins the group again, Masami takes the leading role and begins her reasoning, revealing the culprit. The explains that Masaie's body was hid in the water even before the checking of the temperature took place and further explains the method the culprit used to create an alibi for himself/herself. Together with Conan's help, the trick how tomatoes have been hid under the bath water is revealed, as well as the culprit.

Conan and Sera affirm their deductions and prove '''Sumika Kawana''' was the one who killed Masaie by bludgeoning him and hiding him in the tub. She used a bat and a fan to create the sounds of a vacuum to sound like Masaie was upstairs when he was already dead. Conan also shows that tomatoes don't float unless there is alt mixed in with the water. By adding more salt, she exposed the tomatoes and the body creating an alibi. Sera also points out that she was the woman in red they saw on the way to the cabin as she handed Sera the photos from earlier to investigate without hesitation while the other thought she was a boy. She killed Masaie because he had Satoko play the Red Woman for a prank, and she fell into the bog and died. But since she killed Masaie, who attacked her? The real Red Woman appears, but Yamato and Morofushi arrive and take her away. The woman who attacked Sumika was '''Shinobu Kagawa''', the mistress of the man killed by the Red Woman, because Sumika was dressed as her. Conan later finds Sera's phone and a young girl with Akai eyes is with her.
