Sera had called her brother regarding the "adultery case" she was about to investigate and was overheard by Eri. After the murder was discovered, Sera relayed her brother the facts of the case and her deduction by phone call. He told Sera her deduction was unreliable.

Conan asks Sera who she called during the last case, and she tells Conan about the existence of her second oldest brother who is very smart. Confronted with another murder case, Sera texts her brother about the situation and her logic. Sera also informs her brother than Conan seems to have figured out the case, but she isn't sure of her answer since her confidence has been shaken as of late. Her brother texts Sera asking who she keeps talking about. Sera sends him a picture of Conan and the brother replies that "it is no problem" if it is Conan doing the deducing. Sera meanwhile wonders how her brother knows Conan. Sera later receives one final text from her brother to which Sera thinks "so '''that's''' how it is". At the end of the unseen message is a PS asking if she has "already met the wizard." Sera looks over at Conan and thinks "You could say so..." while sending a reply.

Shuukichi is very intelligent and noticed Conan was an excellent detective on their first meeting. However, Shuukichi is famous and recognizable which contradicts Sera not knowing where he is or what he is up to. He has the right age range for the brother.

==== Taka'aki Morofushi ====
Taka'aki Morofushi is intelligent and has light skin. He was still working in Nagano as a police officer though, so Sera should be able to find out where he and what he was doing. Sera also lacks a Nagano accent, something that might be expected learning Japanese with a family who lived in Nagano for a period of time. (Koumei's lived in Nagano as a child.) Koumei's most recently seen phone is a white clamshell phone.

==== Subaru Okiya ====
Although Subaru Okiya was revealed to be Shuichi Akai, it is possible Akai disguised as his middle brother for some reason. However, Sera would not have wondered how he knew Conan because she was with Subaru and Conan earlier during a case. Okiya's most recently seen phone is black and similar to the one the older brother holds.

Amuro's intelligence matches the middle brother's expected level; however, Amuro's dark skin contradicts the light-colored hand holding the phone when texting Masumi. Amuro has a white iPhone lookalike. However, on page 15 of Chapter 800, his thoughts (i.e., "Why [is Sera Masumi] here..." suggests he knows Sera. Sera doesn't see Amuro, so it is unclear if she knows him or not. Also, Bourbon, like Vermouth, is often in disguise, and either Amuro's dark skin or the light-colored hand holding the cell phone can be makeup or a disguise. However, since Amuro actually wanted the fact that his "older brother" or Shuichi Akai to be dead, it somehow contradict the fact that he's the middle brother

S. California's UTB, United Television Broadcasting's free digital television station began to re-broadcast already dubbed Case Closed's episodes on August 21st, 2011. The next two-episode block was scheduled for Saturday, August 27th, followed by two more episodes on Sunday, August 28th. The episodes were broadcasted at 6:30 a.m and repeated at 10:30 a.m the same day. A one-episode block also aired at 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays as well.

Incidentally, the catchphrase for [[Masumi Sera]] is 'Case Closed' (whether it's intended as a reference or coincidental is unspecified).

As of 2013, only one Case Closed branded videogame was released, which was Case Closed: The mirapolis investigation, which was a Nintendo Wii exclusive title and released only in Japan and Europe. It features the English voice cast from the Anime for the english version, and has minor changes in script. It is so far the only English DC Game.

As of April 2013, Funimation was renewed the Case Closed licence "For Future Use". Additionally on April 2nd 2013, Funimation announced Starting April 16th 2013 seasons 1-5 would be made available digitally through many online vendors, starting with Itunes, Playstation Network and Xbox Live. Season 1 will be available april 16th, season 2 and 3 in may, and Season 4 and 5 in June. ==Critical reception==

The series has been well received in Japan, with the anime adaptation ranking in the top twenty in [[Magazines#Animage|Animage]]'s polls between 1996 until 2000, where it dropped below the top twenty. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Detective Conan often ranked the top six. It has even been used as a mascot to promote citizens to follow the law. The English adaption has not been as equally popular as in Japan, and has been criticized for the name changes.

The manga is a huge success and it is continued to be published. It won the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2000. Some of its volumes appear on the lists of best-selling manga.

The series is successful in Asia and Europe, where some countries translated most of the episodes and volumes. Due to the high popularity DC is re-broadcasting in many countries after the original premieres.

Although popular in many other countries, Case Closed was not as successful in the US, most likely due to poor advertising, name changes, and script changes. Due to this, the "Case Closed" version was cancelled at only 130 episodes. However, the manga is still released by VIZ media, and Funimation is continuing to dub movies.

Even though Detective Conan is a [[Glossary#Shōnen|Shōnen]], its audience is composed of a substantial proportion of female viewers and readers. The series also seems to attract all ages.

Besides his anime and manga appearances, Conan is the protagonist for all the movies and the video games based on the Case Closed series. Subaru Okiya is a graduate student attending Tohto University to earn a doctorate degree in engineering. He originally lived at a boarding house, where the landlord's son nicknamed him "Red Man," after a firetruck, because he frequently saw him watering the plants. After the boarding house burned down in the [[Red, White, Yellow, and the Detective Boys|Red, White, and Yellow Arson Case]], [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] suggested he move into [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]]'s house, explaining to Agasa and [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] that someone living in the house would help to hide his (Shinichi's) disappearance. == Personality ==
Okiya is generally shown to be quiet and reserved, often seeming unfazed by normally stressful situations, such as when Ran attacked him while he was brushing his teeth, believing he had broken into Shinichi's house<ref>Manga [[Volume 61]] File 8: Paper Airplane</ref>, or when a murderer grabbed Ayumi as a hostage.<ref name=Speech>Manga [[Volume 64]] File 3: Thirst for Blood</ref> He often tends to behave in a friendly and modest manner, smiling and rubbing the back of his head whenever someone compliments him or says anything about him. He enjoys cooking and seems ready and willing to help with various tasks. He doesn't mind interacting with the [[Detective Boys]], is always polite to them, and listens to their theories during cases. He is often shown drinking bourbon whiskey.

Okiya becomes more serious while working on cases and enjoys revealing the truth to others similar to Conan. Sometimes he speaks mysteriously, leaving the meaning and intentions of what he said open to interpretation. Okiya has a more menacing side seen whenever he takes to the offensive or is intently focusing on something. In this frame of mind, Okiya triggers Haibara's Black Organization sense.

== Plot overview ==

After school, [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] receives a phone call from [[Jodie Starling|Jodie]] who tells him that the Black Organization has activated a new member codenamed [[Tooru Amuro|Bourbon]]. Meanwhile, the [[Detective Boys]] receive a request from their classmate, Kaito Suigiura, to investigate the actions of a strange man at his father's apartment building which is close to [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]]'s house.<ref>Based on the Japanese address system, the houses are very close. Okiya's previous apartment was at Beika city district 2 #23A. Agasa's address is Beika city district 2 #22. Shinichi's house address is Beika city district 2 21B. Basically, Okiya's apartment is going to be across in the adjacent block of houses across a little street. The Okiya's apt isn't marked on [http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/images/8/8d/Conandrillmap.jpg the map of Beika city], but it should be on the same chunk of buildings that Shinichi's and Agasa's house are (i.e. not separated by a major road as that would change the city district number i.e Mouri agency is city district 5).</ref> The next day the Detective Boys find that the apartment has been burned down. Subaru Okiya first appeared as one of the suspects in this arson case. When [[Inspector Yuminaga]] introduces the detective boys to the suspects, Okiya gives [[Ai Haibara]] the chills which she only gets from those who have been in the Black Organization, although she isn't sure who is responsible at the time and the feeling of pressure unexpectedly disappears.

The revelation that Kaito Suigiura's diary describes a suspicious "yellow" tenant who had argued with the landlord the night the apartment was burnt down leads to the police to question the three suspects about their alibis at the time of the arson as well as their favorite color. Subaru Okiya's alibi was that he was driving alone that night long the verdant Teimuzu river to clear his head after submitting a paper to his professor. Although he likes the greenery of plants, Okiya declared that his favorite is black, "because it covers things inside me that I don't want known", although he hates the color for the same reason.

Conan and Subaru Okiya seem to hit it off when Okiya recognizes Conan quote a line from Sir AC Doyle's "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches". After Conan solves the case, Okiya asks to meet Professor Agasa. After introducing himself, Okiya asks Professor Agasa if he could stay for at his house until he finds another place to live, offering to help Agasa with his research in the spare time. Agasa consents, as long as Haibara also agrees, but Haibara strongly refuses. Conan chimes in offering Shinichi's house, saying that Shinichi has gone missing all of a sudden and Conan will tell Shinichi later that Okiya moved in. Conan overrules Haibara's concerns that the Org may find out through Okiya that Shinichi is still alive by simply saying, "A Holmes fan can't be a bad person!" Conan gives Okiya the key along with the request to take care of the place while he (Shinichi) is gone and Okiya agrees.

===Sports Car Arson Case (Manga: [[Volume 61#Sports Car Arson Case|635-637]], Anime: [[The Blue Spark of Hate|524-525]])===
Conan and Agasa are quick to view Okiya as a resource, seen in the Rolls Royce explosion case where Agasa suggests calling Okiya to bring gasoline when his beetle runs out in a remote location, and later in the same case where Conan secretly asks for his help to set up a trap to trick the culprit into confessing. Okiya secretly watches Conan's plan to trick the culprit into confessing in action.

Ran and Sonoko visit Shinichi's house to clean up unaware that Okiya is living there, and they confront him thinking he is a thief. Okiya fails to explain fast enough and winds up on the receiving end of Ran's karate kick. Conan calls Ran to explain that Okiya has been living in the house after the fire and warns her not to talk about Shinichi in front of him. After the two girls apologize, Okiya correctly deduces they had been to "Welcome Burger" earlier. Okiya makes a strong impression on Sonoko, while Ran thinks "he looks like someone" and she had met him before.

Sonoko then concocts a deduction battle between Okiya and Shinichi to see who can solve the mystery of the paper airplane first. Shinichi and Subaru prove to be equally skilled although neither know they are competing against one another. During the detective showdown, Okiya overhears Sonoko talking about Shinichi's deductions and asks this Shinichi is also the landlord of the house. Ran, thinking of Conan's warning not to talk about Shinichi to Okiya, interrupts Sonoko to say they are consulting one "Kinichi" and that the landlord Shinichi has no special deduction ability. Okiya easily sees through the lie and reveals he had looked around the house but found no personally identifying items. Sonoko and Ran leave to find another paper airplane and Okiya is left to ponder over the landlord.

The deduction battle continues with Okiya and Conan matching each others' deductions perfectly. With the case solved, Okiya suggests that he will leave calling the police up to Ran and Sonoko because they have police acquaintances, revealing he knows something of the backgrounds of the girls and their connections. When the pair leaves, Okiya celebrates the successful resolution of the case with a Sherlock Holmes story and a glass of bourbon.

Okiya's next appearance occurs when he comes at the request of Professor Agasa to pick up the Detective Boys who had gone fishing. Haibara is again suspicious of him, but Conan brushes her feelings aside. Okiya stops Haibara from slipping and offers to cook the Detective Boys' fish. When the Detective Boys stop at an island called Ikkaku Rock, Okiya Subaru takes a group photo. The gang stumble into a dead woman who appeared to have gotten lost and died on accident, but Okiya and Conan quickly recognize that she was deliberately abandoned to die. When Inspector [[Jugo Yokomizo]] tried to prevent the Detective Boys from questioning the suspects, Okiya stepped in, pointing out that sometimes a child's perspective can be the hint that unlocks the truth and, "Weren't there a number of cases that were solved as a result of some hint from these children?" revealing he knows about the Detective Boys' many prior successes.<ref name=665p13>Manga Volume 64, File 2, pg 13: "Mackerel, Carp, Sea Bream, Flounder"</ref> Indeed, with such a hint from Mitsuhiko and Haibara, Conan and Okiya simultaneously realize who the culprit is. After they took turns explaining the case, the culprit pulled out a knife and grabbed [[Ayumi Yoshida]] as a hostage. Conan didn't have any gadgets to help him. At that moment, Haibara felt a menacing aura from Okiya, and he slowly approached the criminal, saying he couldn't escape and even if he did, could he bear the pressure and loneliness of hiding in fear of someone uncovering his identity? The provoked criminal removed the knife from Ayumi's neck and lunged at Okiya. In one effortless movement, Okiya knocked the criminal's knife away and took Ayumi from his grasp. Despite his rescue, the malicious pressure Okiya emitted and his words left a strong impression on Haibara who is certain he is one of the Black Organization members.

[[Jodie Starling]] visits the [[Setting#Beika Department Store|Beika Department Store]], the origin of [[Scar Akai]]'s cap, to look for clues about him. Okiya follows her there. Subaru Okiya, along with Scar Akai and Conan, is then trapped on one of the department store floors by a bomber demanding to find the sender of thirteen red shirts. Meanwhile the [[Black Organization]] has heard that someone who looks like Akai appeared at the department store. [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] park outside the department store with the snipers [[Chianti]] and [[Korn]] to wait for Scar Akai.

Back on the bombed floor, Subaru Okiya takes an interest in the red shirts case. He solves the flag semaphore message and deduces it has to do with an incident in the mountains. Okiya then sees Scar Akai in the crowd and ducks away before scar Akai could spot him, and smiles mysteriously. Okiya goes to the windows out front and spies [[Gin]]'s Porsche and [[Chianti]] who has set up in a hotel across the street.

Conan tranquilizes [[Kogoro Mouri]] to begin his deduction show just as Kogoro receives an anonymous text message containing a mostly complete solution to the case from Scar Akai. After the case is over, [[Andre Camel]] reveals to Jodie the Black Organization are waiting outside with a sniper. Jodie rushes after scar Akai to stop him from being killed, but is prevented from reaching him by Okiya who knocks her over.

To prevent Scar Akai from being shot, Conan stirs the crowd up by lying that the store is giving out 10,000 yen gift cards. Okiya confronts Conan, who is surprised to see him, and introduces himself to Kogoro Mouri. He reveals that he was trapped on the bombed floor and tells Conan he was in the area because he visited the [[Scar Akai#Teito Bank Heist|Teito bank]] and followed Conan when he saw Conan enter the Beika Dept store. He leaves Conan with the mysterious quote:

Okiya comes to rescue Conan and the Detective Boys who had been trapped by kidnappers in a building. Okiya thought they had encountered trouble when he noticed that no lights came on at Agasa's house after dark, and when he went over to inspect, the front door was unlocked, nobody was there, and two suspicious phone calls arrived. Okiya uses a spare pair of Conan's tracking glasses in order to find the Detective Boys, proving he knows about the function of Conan's tracking glasses and that they lock onto the detective badges.<ref name=755p14>Chapter 755 page 14: Communications Code</ref> Conan has never used the tracking glasses in front of Okiya before. Okiya knocks out one of the kidnappers, but tells the Detective Boys that the robber fell down the stairs. When Haibara questions why he had been paying so much attention to Agasa's house, Okiya tells her he wanted to give them some extra curry he had made for lunch.

===Ayumi Kidnapping Case (Manga: [[Volume 74|775-776]], Anime: [[The Professor's Video Site|656-657]])===
[[Masumi Sera]] stops [[Genta]] and [[Mitsuhiko]] outside of Agasa's house to ask them if they are acquaintances of Professor Agasa's. The topic of [[Shinichi]] comes up when she talks to the two detective boys about the [[Masumi_Sera#Kogoro_Detective_Agency_Hostage_Crisis_.28Manga_771-774.29|prior hostage case]]. Sera asks who is living in the Kudo house now because she saw the curtains shift slightly. The detective boys tell her that Subaru Okiya has been staying there since his apartment burnt down.

Sera cryptically comments with a smirk on her face, "And here I thought that someone had just settled in without permission...But it seems I was just getting worked up over nothing..." while looking up at where Okiya Subaru is hiding and secretly observing the conversation.

Later, after Genta ruins Agasa's curry, Okiya secretly follows the detective boys on an errand to buy new ingredients. He tails the detective boys rather closely; Haibara, who is wearing a hat, seems determined not to acknowledge his presence. He stops and looks over his shoulder to watch a car that parked on a side street. The car pulls out of sight and Okiya turns away and continues on, but soon enough car reverses back into its former position. Okiya is later seen in the grocery store, and he worriedly watches Conan and Haibara dash out of the grocery store after hearing that Sera saw Haibara's reflection in Agasa's glasses in an online video. Okiya follows the detective boys back and listens into Conan's conversation at Agasa's via an earpiece while watching on the professor's house from one of the Kudo household's upper story windows.

Okiya appears at Haibara and Agasa's house and goes with them in [[Vehicles#Subaru 360|his car]] to save Conan who had been kidnapped. During the chase, Okiya uses the phrase "Don't make that kind of face", to reassure Haibara that he will definitely catch up to Conan. When he pulls up behind the suspect's car, he leans out the driver's side and puts his hand in his jacket, likely to pull out a handgun to shoot out the suspect's tires. Okiya aborts this plan when [[Tooru Amuro]] pulls up alongside him and they look at one another. Amuro and [[Sera]] successfully stop the kidnapper and Okiya drives away without lingering at the scene.

===Don't make that kind of face (Manga: [[Volume 76|802]], Anime: [[Won't Forgive Even One Millimeter|675]])===
In chapter 802, Haibara hears the same "Don't make that kind of face" phrase from Conan, causing her to remember both the statement that Okiya made in chapter 800, and Akai making the same statement while under the Dai Moroboshi persona about protecting her sister. After this Haibara begins referring to Okiya using his given name "Subaru".

===Ski trip delay (Manga: [[Volume 77|809-811]], Anime: [[Froth, Steam, and Smoke|684-685]])===

Haibara and Conan are late for a ski trip with professor Agasa and the detective boys because Haibara forgot something at Agasa's house. Unable to rouse the drunk sleeping Kogoro into getting a rental car, Haibara suggests calling Okiya for a ride. Conan is surprised at Haibara's change of heart regarding Okiya. On the way to the ski site, Okiya suggests he might join in because he feels he has been getting out of shape. Haibara directly questions Okiya about why he needs to stay in shape. Okiya comments, "Well, in a way... I ''do'' want to look good for the ladies." A murder case happens, interrupting the trip. After Conan runs off to question the suspects with Takagi, Subaru examines the body and gives his thoughts. Haibara suggests that he is rather knowledgeable about murders. Okiya gently corrects her, saying his interest is derived from his love of Holmes, and that he likes solving puzzles.

While the case suspects are being questioned by the Police, Haibara is waiting outside together with Okiya in front of the Police Headquarters. She mentions that this is "the first time" that she's alone with him. Okiya suggests that they should move to the parking lot and wait inside the car. However, Haibara doesn't seem to like the idea, and sarcastically answers that he can force her to come along with him if that's what he wants. Okiya doesn't do so, because of an unknown promise he made with ''"her"''.

The sky has turned dark. Okiya takes a nap inside his car. Haibara decides to take advantage of this moment and secretly tries to remove his scarf. However, Okiya has waken up and stops her from doing so. He explained: "Beyond here is my area... and not your space... Adults get cold... They're not outdoor creatures, after all..."

===Yusaku Kudo's Cold Case (Manga: [[Volume 77|812-814]], Anime: [[Yusaku Kudo's Cold Case‎|690]]-[[Yusaku Kudo's Cold Case‎|691]])===

Ran, Sonoko, and Sera go to Shinichi's house to find pictures of a ten year old crime scene similar to a case they just stumbled upon earlier. Sera enters the bathroom looking for Conan and encounters Subaru brushing his teeth with his neck uncovered. Sera becomes suspicious of him. She also wonders if he has invited a woman over when she finds a woman's hair tie. While the three girls are trying to solve the case, they decide to call Shinichi, and Conan is obligated to go to the bathroom and take the call. Subaru notices this and realizes he is going to play the Shinichi Kudo role. Rather than disturbing him, Subaru sends a message to Shinichi via Ran, telling him the name "Kumogakure Saizou", a clue to solve the case. After revealing the truth, Conan runs out from the bathroom, but he does not realize that Subaru had been watching him. Sera points out Conan left his bowtie on his cellphone. Then Subaru teases him by pretending to address Conan as Shinichi Kudo before suddenly switching topics.

When Amuro sneaks into the Mouri Detective Agency to illicitly view the material Kogoro's clients have sent him, which includes a video of [[Shiho Miyano]] sent by [[Mitsuhiko]], Amuro notices someone hacking Kogoro's computer. After Amuro notices this, there is a cut to Shinichi Kudo's house showing Okiya sitting by three monitors with a glass of bourbon and an ashtray full of cigarettes.

===Bell Tree Express Mystery (Manga: [[Volume 78|820-824]], Anime: [[The Jet-Black Mystery Train |701-704]])===

It is revealed that Vermouth and Bourbon are on the train, and that they have located Sherry and notified Gin and Vodka about this. Subaru is seen in a room with a woman who looks like Vermouth, but the top part of her face is hidden by her hat. Haibara receives a text message from Vermouth asking, "Are you ready?" Haibara locks herself in her bathroom and prepares to take the drug, presumably to turn herself into Sherry to protect her alternate identity. However, before she can consume the drug, Subaru enters, states "Just as expected of sisters, I can read all your moves." He is holding up a cell phone as he speaks, "Now, can I have you step this way...into our area?" However Haibara quickly runs past him, trying to escape. Later, Subaru is shown setting an unconscious Sera on the sofa of the train, smiling as she unconsciously mutters the words "Shuu-nii". At the end of chapter 824, Subaru is seen putting on his glasses while observing Vermouth and Bourbon. His eyes are open and his eyes are identical to Shuichi Akai's.

===Delivery Service (Manga: [[Volume 80|843]], Anime: [[Sweet and Cold Delivery Service|722-723]])===

The Detective Boys become trapped in a refrigerated delivery truck with a cat, a dead body, and two murderous workers. Unable to call for help and out of other options, Conan decides to try to get a message to Amuro using the cat and a doctored receipt. The receipt blew away before he could see the message, delaying Amuro who had to search for it. A while later when it appears like the Black Organization agent won't be coming to rescue them, Conan checks the packages for electronics they could try to use and unexpectedly finds a cake intended for Professor Agasa. He changes the address to direct the parcel to Kudo's house knowing that Okiya will deduce the situation and provide help. Okiya then gives the unwitting murderers a package containing a phone to deliver. Amuro finally locates the truck and comes to the rescue, so Okiya's phone is only used to call the police. Okiya watches the rescue unfold from the Kudo house window.

===Conan Edogawa===
[[Conan]] trusts Okiya for the most part, and they maintain an amicable relationship. Conan easily lends Okiya the keys to his house.<ref name=Neighbor>Manga [[Volume 60]] File 5: The New Neighbor</ref> Conan also trusts Okiya to help in cases that put him in close contact with both [[Ai Haibara]] and him, like switching out the gasoline in a container for water to solve a case,<ref name=Crackle>Manga Volume 61 File 7: Crackle</ref> or calling him to pick up everyone when [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]]’s car broke down.<ref name=Burn>Manga Volume 61 File 5: Burn</ref> Okiya respects Conan and his intelligence and they both can solve cases at about the same level. Conan tells Haibara he is trustworthy because he is a fellow [[Sherlock Holmes]] fan, much to her annoyance. Subaru is one of the few [[List of characters who know Conan's identity|characters who knows Conan is Shinichi]] after confirming [[Conan vs. Double Code Mystery|his earlier suspicions]] by [[Volume_77#Cold_Case|listening to Conan]] make a phone call as Shinichi.

===Hiroshi Agasa===
Okiya and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]] maintain a good relationship with one another. The professor often asks him for favors, like picking the detective boys up from a fishing trip. Agasa also lets Okiya come over and cook from time to time and he will make Agasa food to return the favor, like stir-fried onions and curry. Agasa also seems well informed about when Okiya has free time and is available for favors or when he is on the road.

===Ai Haibara===
[[Ai Haibara]] doesn't trust Okiya because he gives her the chills which she only gets from those who have been in the Black Organization. She hides from him behind Conan when they meet in person and avoids being alone in Agasa's house when he is around. On his part, Okiya is kind to Haibara and seems to look out for her.

Haibara's opinion changes, however, in File 800 after Okiya consoles her when Conan is being abducted by a culprit in a crime. It is revealed afterwards that this is because what he said was similar to what Shuichi Akai had once told her when he was the lover of Haibara's sister, [[Akemi Miyano]]. Because of this, Haibara gains trust in Okiya and starts calling him by his first name.<ref> Chapters 800-803:When Objects Collide </ref>

===Tooru Amuro===
They have not directly met, though Okiya has seen Tooru Amuro many times. In most instances, Okiya is the one to notice Amuro but avoids Amuro seeing him for some reason. During the thirteen red shirts case, both Okiya and Amuro (as [[Scar Akai]]) are present with the hostages. When Okiya is about to send his deductions about the bomber's identity to Kogoro's phone, he sees Amuro, and before Amuro can see him, disappears from the area. During the Conan Edogawa kidnapping case, Subaru leans out the door to shoot at the tires of the car Conan's in, but Amuro's car passes by him, prompting Okiya to close the door to avoid Amuro. At the end of the Bell Train Mystery arc, Okiya is shown observing Amuro and Vermouth from a distance with a smirk, opening one of his eyes which looks like Akai's and giving a strong hint that he is Akai. If it is true then based on what has been said about Akai and Amuro's relation, it's likely he sees Amuro as an enemy, though not to the extent that Amuro views him.

[[Masumi Sera]] is Shuichi Akai's younger sister. To avoid disclosing his identity, Okiya tried to avoid acting conspicuously in front of her.

The mechanism to operate Conan's glasses isn't obvious, so only someone who knows about their existence beforehand could recognize the glasses at Agasa's and figure out how to activate the tracking function. Shuichi Akai could have heard about the glasses in several ways. The first source is when [[James Black]] was kidnapped while he had [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]]'s detective badge. Conan used the badge to track down James Black. James was waiting to meet with Akai before he was kidnapped and drove away with Akai after he was rescued. Akai could have also heard about the tracking function from Jodie when Conan chased after Kir to prevent an assassination. Finally, Akai may also know about them from when Haibara borrowed the glasses to find Conan at the shipping yards at the climax of the Vermouth arc. He was present at the time and would have seen Haibara wearing them even though she has never worn glasses when Akai had seen her previously.

This article documents a former theory that Scar Akai was Bourbon in disguise and explains the evidence and his motives for disguising as Akai. It was officially revealed that Scar Akai was Bourbon in disguise at Teito Bank, Beika Department Store, and in front of Mouri Detective Agency, while Vermouth was Scar Akai on the Bell Tree Express.

[[Scar Akai]] was a mysterious person of unknown allegiance who appeared some time after [[Kir]] apparently killed [[Shuichi Akai]]. One fan theory was that Scar Akai could be [[Bourbon]] who, with [[Vermouth]]'s help, disguised as Akai and was appearing before the [[FBI|FBI agents]] in order to gauge whether the real Akai is alive or not based on their reactions. Bourbon, who hates Akai and refuses to believe that anyone else could kill him, believes Akai's death was faked with help of Kir and the FBI.

==Scar Akai is not the real Akai==

===Scar Akai is right handed, not left handed like Akai===

[[Scar Akai]] used his right hand to fire a handgun and to hand back a cellphone. It is unlikely scar Akai is simply using his right hand because he injured his left. In the "Teito Bank Heist",<ref name=Shaking_Heart>Manga Volume 65, File 5: "Shaking Heart"</ref> he easily escaped the duct tape binding his hands, yet probably did not use the same method that [[Jodie Starling]] used<ref name=679p6>Manga Volume 65, File 4, Page 6: "The Trap"</ref> because there was still duct tape over his mouth.<ref name=679p14>Manga Volume 65, File 5, Page 14: "Shaking Heart"</ref> It doesn't make much sense for him to remove it and then put the duct tape back over his mouth again afterwards. Removing the tape with only one hand, especially if he is using his off hand, would be difficult if the robbers are watching him. His eyes were covered so scar Akai couldn't be sure that no one was watching until the robbers pretended to be hostages which would give him only a few minutes to escape. 

===Scar Akai's behavior does not make sense if he is Akai===

====Scar Akai doesn't appear to have lost his memory====
If Scar Akai is the real [[Shuichi Akai|Akai]], one must assume he either has his memory or he doesn't have it. If he has his memory, Akai would absolutely not wander around in the open since it puts the undercover CIA [[Hidemi Hondou]] at risk with no gains to be made from doing so. The [[Black Organization]]'s actions in the "Thirteen Red Shirts" case<ref name=red_shirts>Manga Volume 67, File 5-8: "13 Red Shirts case"</ref> demonstrate the danger.

If Akai has [[wiki:amnesia|amnesia]], then it is plausible Akai would walk around in the open without knowing the danger he is in, however Scar Akai's actions strongly suggest his memory is still intact. He seems to be stalking the [[FBI]] by appearing before them: something he would not do if he had lost all of his memory. Further emphasizing the point, Akai also apparently left a warning message to Jodie on her drink coaster during the events of the thirteen red shirts case. If perhaps Scar Akai recognized the FBI a little and felt comfortable enough to leave Jodie a message, it is strange that he would not speak to the FBI agents since Scar Akai is clearly capable of speaking.<ref name=704p5>Manga Volume 67, File 8, Page 5: "Silent Clash"</ref> Scar Akai also appears to recognize [[Chianti]].<ref name=704p12>Manga Volume 67, File 8, Page 12: "Silent Clash"</ref>

These contradictions are resolved if Scar Akai is someone else in disguise as Akai and is trying to gauge from the FBI's reactions whether the real Akai is dead or not.

====Scar Akai is faking inability to speak in front of the FBI====
Scar Akai has avoided speaking in front of the FBI. Jodie assumed he lost his voice at first, but it was later proven that Scar Akai is capable of speaking when he returned a phone.<ref name=704p5/> One may assume that Scar Akai became deaf but this does not explain why when Jodie called out to him and grabbed his arm, he didn't react at all. Deafness contradicts with his correct and prompt compliance with the robber's vocal demands at the Teito bank heist and the bomber's demands at the Beika dept store. If Scar Akai was deaf, he wouldn't have been able to solve the red shirts case because he wouldn't have been able to read the receipts from where he was standing to see the time of purchase. Even if Scar Akai could [[wiki:Lip reading|lip read]], if he was deaf he would not have been able to figure out the bank robbers' plans and know it was safe to remove his duct tape.

A more reasonable explanation is that Scar Akai is not Akai and avoided speaking because he is unable to imitate Akai's voice.

===Gin's actions suggest that he doesn't think Scar Akai is the real Akai===
After [[Gin]] called [[Kir]] in the Thirteen Red Shirts case,<ref name=red_shirts/> he held a gun to her head for the duration of the stakeout. After Gin observes Scar Akai<ref name=704p10>Manga Volume 67, File 8, Page 10: Silent Clash</ref>, he gives the order for Chianti to leave, and he lowers the gun from Kir's head.<ref name=704p13>Manga Volume 67, File 8, Page 13: Silent Clash</ref> While Gin might not have wanted to shoot Kir with an unsilenced gun in front of a busy department store that is filled with police, if he thought that Kir was a traitor who had helped Akai fake his death, Gin would not have lowered his gun since Kir may attempt to retaliate in some fashion now that her cover has been blown. The lowering of the gun is concession on Gin's part that he knows or strongly suspects Scar Akai isn't the real Akai.

==Scar Akai is probably a Black Organization operative rather than an FBI agent, a CIA agent, or a third party==
Haibara gets [[Shiho_Miyano#.22Black_Organization_sense.22|a very strong fear reaction]] from Scar Akai when he walks nearby on the Bell Tree express train. She even turns to look at him to identify the source.<ref>Manga File 818, pg 14: "Mystery Train: All Aboard!"</ref>

Scar Akai almost certainly isn't in the FBI or [[CIA]] because there isn't a single beneficial reason to wander about in the open disguised as Akai, and doing so risks compromising Hidemi who is an asset to both aforementioned agencies. Civilians around where Scar Akai appears are also put at risk of becoming collateral damage should the Black Organization attack. The obvious remaining choices are that Scar Akai is a member of the Black Organization or a third party.

If Scar Akai is a member of a third party, then perhaps he is trying to lure the Black Organization out with a disguise because he knows Akai was a serious threat to them and apparently died; however, this means the hypothetical third party Scar Akai doesn't care about or doesn't know about Hidemi Hondou being a spy. If a third party was interested in luring out the Black Organization, then simply appearing as Akai somewhere would be enough. Specifically appearing with FBI agents puts the agents at risk as well as endangering any civilians that happen to be around. Since most third party intelligence or police organizations like [[wiki:Interpol|Interpol]] or the [[wiki:Public Security Intelligence Agency|PSIA]] would be allied with the FBI or the CIA, they would avoid doing this. Another issue is that the existence of Interpol, PSIA, or any other agency investigating the Black Organization has not been hinted as was the case with the FBI in the Vermouth arc<ref name=339p14>There are several examples, but the first is in Manga Volume 33, File 11: pgs 13-14, ○×△□!?. Later it was proven the FBI were involved after Akai is seen with agents in Manga Volume 35, File 4, pg 18: Golden Apple 5.</ref> or CIA in the Kir arc.<ref name=584p16>Manga Volume 56, file 9, pgs 13-16: Company. "The Company" is a well known nickname for the CIA.</ref> It is possible that Scar Akai may be a member of a rival criminal organization, but again there is no evidence of one existing. Finally, third parties run into the problem of how exactly they found out about the circumstances of Akai’s death well enough to time their agent’s arrival and appearance to match Akai. In conclusion, the most likely option is Scar Akai is a member of the Black Organization.

==If Scar Akai is a Black Organization operative, then he is most likely Bourbon==
At the Beika department store case, Scar Akai was present at the same time as all the other known codenamed Black Organization members except Bourbon (and the boss). Assuming Scar Akai is a member of the Black Organization, [[Bourbon]] is the logical choice. Kir noted that Bourbon is skilled at deduction, a trait that scar Akai shows by solving the red shirt's case and figuring out the bank robber's plans.<ref>He must have figured out the bank robber's plans in order to know when it was safe to remove his duct tape without being caught.</ref> Bourbon doesn't believe Akai is dead,<ref name=703p3>Manga Volume 67, File 7, page 3: "The Truth Amidst the Snowstorm"</ref> so it makes sense that [[#Bourbon's motive - He doesn't believe Akai is dead.|Bourbon would create a plan to discover if the real Akai is alive]]. Gin also described him as secretive<ref name=703p3/> which is demonstrated when Gin, not knowing that Bourbon was in disguise as Akai with a burn, set up snipers to kill him thinking he is the real Akai. Much later during the Bell Tree Express arc, although all three Bourbon suspects (Subaru Okiya, Tooru Amuro and Masumi Sera) appear, Scar Akai appears as a person seperate from all of them. However, if one were to assume this Scar Akai were someone else, presumably Vermouth, then it isn't impossible for this situation to occur and Vermouth's presense would overshadow Bourbon's Black Organization aura from Ai Haibara. The Scar Akai on the train also sports a longer scar and different clothing, leading credence to the fact that Scar Akai is just some disguise.

===Bourbon is not a made up agent to test Kir===

The conversation with Gin, Vodka, and Kir about Bourbon <ref name=703p3>Manga Volume 67, File 7, page 3: "The Truth Amidst the Snowstorm"</ref> does imply that Bourbon is a real person rather than a made up agent meant to test if Kir was leaking information.

==Bourbon disguises as Scar Akai to discover if the real Akai faked his death==
Bourbon, with the boss's approval and [[Vermouth]]'s help, has disguised as scar Akai and is observing the FBI agents' reactions to his sudden appearances in order to gauge whether the FBI believe Akai is dead or helped him with a fake death plan.

===Bourbon's motive - He doesn't believe Akai is dead===
Gin and [[Vodka]] saw Akai’s “assassination” carried out, so this would appear to negate any reason the Black Organization would have to look into Akai’s death; however, Gin spoke to the fact that Bourbon hates Akai with a passion and believes he is the only one capable of killing Shuichi Akai and is therefore likely to suspect a trick in the FBI agent’s death.<ref name=703p3/> Thus, Bourbon has motivation to investigate Akai’s death.

===Bourbon's mission - Disguise as Akai to test the FBI's reactions===
So far, Scar Akai has only appeared in front of FBI agents rather than around Tokyo generally with the exception of Sera. The most obvious reason for a Black Organization member to do so would be to gauge from the FBI's reactions to the disguise whether Akai is really dead. The FBI agents Scar Akai has appeared in front of so far, [[Jodie Starling]]<ref name=677p6>Manga Volume 65, File 3, pg 6: The fated individual</ref> and [[Andre Camel]],<ref name=700p11>Manga Volume 67, File 4, pg 11: Dangerous area</ref> were known to be close to Akai and thus would be considered likely compatriots if Akai needed help faking his death. As for why Scar Akai would target Sera, [[Masumi Sera#Shuichi Akai's younger sister|it is widely speculated that Sera is Akai's younger sister]]. Targeting her confirms her relationship to Akai, and thus her potential as a tool to lure out Akai later if need be. Sera's reaction to the burned face of Scar Akai can reveal if she has seen or heard from the real Akai in the interim and thus is a contact of Akai's. (It seems she is not.)

===Bourbon's disguise - Created with help from Vermouth===

In that scene, there is a panel with no speech where Vermouth faces Gin and whispers something to him. This signifies a conversation between Gin and Vermouth that the readers were not allowed to hear. At this time, Vermouth informs Gin that Scar Akai is Bourbon in disguise, and that she helped with that disguise as part of a plan to test the FBI's reactions to him to see if Akai is still alive. Gin asks if Vermouth got authorization from the boss to go through with this plan and disguise Bourbon as Akai. Vermouth affirms this and explains that the boss is cautious and wants to make doubly certain the FBI didn't plan a trick with Kir to fake Akai's death. 
This conversation implies that the Black Organization lied to Kir about Bourbon's true mission so that Kir could not alert any FBI colleagues that they were going to be probed. Kir was told Bourbon was looking for [[Sherry]].<ref name=703p3/>

Vermouth's help with the disguise explains the discrepancy between the excellence of the Scar Akai mask and Bourbon's inability to mimic voices which requires him to pretend he is mute. Bourbon damaging his mask by removing the tape covering his eyes in the Teito Bank heist explains the artistic reasons why [[#Scar Akai is right handed, not left handed like Akai|the upper part of Scar Akai's face was drawn in shadow and the gun was positioned to hide the damaged scar.]]<ref name=679p14>Manga Volume 65, File 5, pg 14: "Shaking Heart"</ref>

===Bourbon's investigation - He suspects Kir is a traitor===
As additional evidence, Scar Akai has Kogoro’s cellphone number either memorized or specifically noted down. Kogoro's landline still seems to be the primary call route for first time clients as of the Kir arc, indicating that it is Kogoro's public business number. An obvious explanation for why a Black Organization operative would have Kogoro’s cell number is that Scar Akai got it from Kir’s phone which has a text message from Kogoro with his routing number that was sent sometime after the Ding-Dong-Dash case.<ref name=499p16>Manga Volume 48, File 9, pg 16: "Ding-Dong Dash"</ref> It would be impossible for Akai to fake his death without Kir being an accomplice, so Kir would be a natural target for anyone investigating Akai's death. Kogoro would have sent the text message later, most likely after looking up his routing number because he didn’t give her the number immediately at her apartment. Kir's cellphone was most likely left in Gin’s car after she changed clothes following the failed first round of the attempted assassination of Domon.<ref name=502p15>Manga Volume 49, File 2, pg 15: "New Order"</ref> Kir switched contact methods to a radio with a mike like Vermouth because she was on a motorcycle and wearing a helmet.<ref name=503p9>Manga Volume 49, File 3, pg 9: "Black Organization versus FBI 1"</ref> As long as no one else in the Organization tampered with her cellphone while she was in the hospital, it is unlikely the message was erased before Bourbon would have the chance to investigate it.

==Scar Akai's actions, even the seemingly contradictory ones, can fit with Bourbon's motives and personality==
===Why would Bourbon protect Conan in the Teito Bank Heist case? – There are several possible motives===
If Scar Akai is Bourbon, it is unexpected that an Organization member would choose to rescue [[Conan]] and shooting a gun would risk calling attention to himself. There are several reasons why Bourbon might do this.

==== Vermouth's promise ====
Much later, Vermouth mentions that she and Bourbon have a promise with one another which went unstated. At the time Vermouth mentioned the promise she was watching an accident scene where the Bourbon suspects [[Tooru Amuro#Bourbon|Tooru Amuro]], [[Subaru Okiya#Bourbon|Subaru Okiya]], and [[Masumi Sera]] were finishing up a case that involved Conan being kidnapped and held at gunpoint. At the time Vermouth said Bourbon earned some trust. We know that Vermouth has a soft spot for Conan and Ran so the promise may have involved Bourbon watching out for Conan, which explains why Scar Akai acted to protect Conan at the bank case.

==== Conan's involvement in past Black Organization cases ====

Bourbon may have his own reasons for wanting to rescue Conan. If Bourbon has access to any Black Organization intelligence, as would be expected of someone specializing in intelligence gathering, he may have discovered Conan or someone matching Conan's description has appeared at several relevant cases. The more Bourbon knows about Conan's appearances, the stronger Bourbon’s motive for wanting to make sure Conan is around to watch or investigate because Bourbon may not get all the answers from his other lines of investigation. 
If Bourbon were to recognize Conan from one case, it would be the Ding-Dong-Dash case since Bourbon already has info on Kogoro from that time because he knows the detective’s cellphone number offhand. Beyond that, Bourbon may also recognize Conan from the billion yen robbery case and newspaper picture that ran with the story about [[Akemi Miyano]]’s death.<ref name=180p10> Manga Volume 18, File 10, pg 15: Checkmate</ref> Bourbon would most likely have taken note of that since Akemi was close to Akai. Bourbon must not have too deeply incriminating info on Conan yet because if Bourbon realized how brilliant Conan was, knew that Conan had been with the FBI, and that Conan and Akai had a working relationship and spent time planning together, then Bourbon would have chosen to investigate Conan before Jodie or Camel.

==== Convenient means of escape ====
Firing the gun also provided a convenient way to escape. If Bourbon is wearing a mask, he would have damaged it by removing the duct tape covering his eyes.<ref name=679p14>Manga file Manga Volume 65, File 5, pg 14: "Shaking Heart". While the anime shows the scar and presumably the rest of the mask intact, the manga doesn’t make it clear in either the gunshot scene or the video scene (V67-4 p2) whether Scar Akai’s mask is intact or not. The anime may have made a mistake.</ref> Thus, Bourbon would want to leave the bank quickly while Jodie is unconscious so she doesn’t realize Scar Akai is a disguise. Firing a gun would bring the police rushing in and would stir up the crowd providing cover. It would also mean Scar Akai could leave that much sooner. Scar Akai could have fired the gun at the ceiling or similar, but firing it at Conan's attacker gives his disguise additional credence in Jodie's eyes because the real Akai would have rescued a child. Lastly, Scar Akai may have found Conan interesting: Conan did ruin the thieves' plan and used his voice changer so that Scar Akai could hear it.<ref>Scar Akai most likely knew the robbers' plan because he knew when it was safe to remove his duct tape. He would have realized that Conan's instructions given in the lead bank robber's voice were someone else's doing. Furthermore, on page 12 in chapter V65-5, Conan explained how he could tell the bank robbers apart in a loud enough voice that the hostages had turned around to listen. Bourbon would have realized that the children were responsible somehow.</ref>


===Why would Bourbon not tell the other Black Organization agents what he is doing? – Bourbon has a secretive personality===
Bourbon would not expect much help from his fellow operatives seeing as how Gin, Vodka, and Chianti assumed that Akai was dead. During a car chase, Okiya said the line "Don't make that kind of face"<ref name="800pg11"/> which caused Haibara to remember that Dai Moroboshi said something similar to that in the past.<ref name="802pg10"/> After realizing this, Haibara's attitude towards Okiya changes and she begins to think about who he might really be. She allows herself to be alone with him at one point showing that she thinks he is not likely to be harmful to her. When Okiya falls asleep, Haibara takes the opportunity to try to remove his scarf and look at his collar/neck area. This indicates Haibara has decent idea of who he might be. Haibara knows Akai fairly well through her sister Akemi, and perhaps more directly as Akai's infiltration mission was to get close to Shiho in order to use her prestige to gain the Black Organization's trust.

===Conan seems to know about Okiya’s address despite having never met him===
In the "Red, White and Yellow" case,<ref name=622p8>Manga Volume 60 File 3 Page 8: Red, White and Yellow</ref> Conan seems to recognize the address Okiya was staying at despite never having met Okiya before. This reaction would make sense if Akai told Conan where he was living while in disguise. While Okiya must have lived there long enough though for the landlord's son to recognize his flower watering habits, the passage of time in Detective Conan is difficult to judge. Also, Okiya watered the plants everyday when no one else did previously, which means the kid could notice when the garden improved after a few days of care.

The “Akai” (meaning red) part of Akai’s name refers to Mobile Suit Gundam character Char Aznable’s nickname “Red comet.” “Shuichi” is a reference to the voice actor of Char Aznable, Ikeda Shuichi (who incidentally became Akai’s voice actor too). Dai Moroboshi, the alias Akai used while he was undercover in the Black Organization, comes from part of Char's real name, Casval Rem Deikun, with "Dei" pronounced as "Dai" (ダイ) in Japanese. In Moroboshi (諸星), the first kanji can be broken up into 言者 which when pronounced as げんしゃ (gensho) sounds very similar to the word for "phenomenon" (genshou). The second character (星) means "star". Moroboshi, read as "Star phenomenon" references falling stars or maybe comets. “Subaru Okiya” is a pun on Char Aznable’s real name which is キャスバル “Kyasubaru” (romanized as 'Casval').<ref name=Char_Aznable>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Char_Aznable</ref>

In the Red, White, and Yellow case,<ref name=622p8>Manga Volume 60 File 3 Page 8: Red, White and Yellow</ref> Subaru Okiya was the "red guy" possibly referencing "Akai" which means red.

===Mystery train===
The mystery train arc gave many hints that Okiya is Akai. As pointed out earlier, he smiled at Sera when she mentioned Akai. The second one was when Haibara was about to take the drug and return to her adult form, he barged into the hallway and said, "Just as expected of sisters, I can read all your moves," implying that he knew Haibara's sister very well. This could not have been possible if he were just a graduate student living in Conan's house. However, Akemi Miyano was Shuichi Akai's girlfriend, and so it is possible that he was referencing the fact that he was Shuichi Akai. The third hint was revealed when Bourbon was about to capture Sherry, but someone throws a hand grenade from the corridor, causing the plan to fail and the carriage to explode. The silhouette shown is a person who looks like Akai but has on Okiya's clothes and Sera's hat. This gave almost concrete proof that Akai changed back to his original appearance to throw the grenade and at the end of the chapter, Subaru Okiya opens one of his eyes for the first time and they are shown to look exactly like Akai's.

==Rebuttals of arguments that Okiya is a member of the Black Organization==

===Okiya drinks a bottle of bourbon - Akai likes bourbon whiskey===
Okiya was drinking bourbon at the end of the Paper Airplane case and when hacking Kogoro's PC.<ref name=Rescue>Manga Volume 61 File 10 Page 16: Rescue</ref> A similar situation was used to misleadingly hint that FBI agent Jodie was Vermouth when she drank sherry.<ref name=Who_Are>Manga Volume 34 File 4 Page 4: Who Are You?</ref> Also FBI Agent [[Andre Camel]] noted that bourbon is Akai's favorite drink.<ref name=The_Fated>Manga Volume 65 File 3 Pages 3-4: The Fated Individual</ref>

===Okiya is smart and detective-like just like Bourbon - but so is Akai===
According to CIA agent [[Kir]], Bourbon is a smart detective-like fellow who excels at gathering information. Akai is also smart and a decent detective as well. He managed to find [[James Black]] in the "P&A" case<ref name=Panda>Manga Volume 32 File 8-10: The Man from Chicago</ref> although it wasn't stated how he did it. In the "Black Impact!" case,<ref name=BOvsFBI>Manga Volume 48 File 10, Volume 49 Files 1-4: Black Impact!</ref> he figured out [[Kogoro Mouri]] would be a target well in advance. In the Kir arc, Akai uncovered the identity of [[Ethan Hondou]] as a CIA agent. He noticed Kir was faking her coma while she was being kept in a the hospital. Akai could deduce the FBI's plan to escape with Kir just by seeing the three identical vans and secretly adapted it in order to return Kir to the organization.

===Okiya triggers Haibara's Black Organization senses - Akai does too===
Akai's presence causes Haibara to react badly although she never explicitly says Akai has the scent. It isn't surprising since he infiltrated the [[Black Organization]] before with the alias Dai Moroboshi where he received the codename Rye and worked under [[Gin]]. Akai's presence frightens Haibara in the "P and A" case<ref name=P&A>Manga Volume 32 File 9 Page 12: P&A</ref><ref name=380p6>Manga Volume 37, File 8, Page 6: "White Snow, Black Shadow": Conan directly states Haibara reacted to Shuichi Akai.</ref> and also in the "Contact with the Black Organization" case.<ref name=New_Weapon>Manga Volume 38 File 1 Page 18: The New Weapon</ref> In both cases, there were no other Black Organization operatives around that could have caused Haibara to feel the aura.

===Conan doesn't want Okiya to learn much about Shinichi - because Conan is paranoid even around allies===
Conan hid all his pictures and family albums and told Ran not to talk about Shinichi around Okiya. As stated before, Conan is a paranoid person even when he is pretty sure the people he is cooperating with are allies. He didn't trust Jodie right up until Vermouth revealed herself.<ref name=The_Truth>Manga Volume 42 File 9: The Truth Behind the Mask</ref> Conan is purposefully limiting the number of people who know information that could get everyone around him killed. The Black Organization has gotten the better of the FBI in past cases and the Black Organization probably spies on the FBI heavily - proven when they quickly found out about Camel's involvement in a case before it became public. Thus if it isn’t necessary, Conan would probably prefer that the FBI doesn’t learn his true identity.

===Ran has the feeling she shouldn't talk about Shinichi with Okiya - because Akai is scary===
Ran has the feeling she shouldn't talk about Shinichi with Okiya.<ref name=Message>Manga Volume 61 File 9 Page 6: Message</ref> Akai is a intimidating person – he is described as an evil-eyed man by Conan.<ref name=Fake_Patient>Manga Volume 57 File 11 Page 5: The Fake Patient</ref> Also, Akai seriously frightened Ran during their first meeting in New York which would lead to negative association.<ref name=NY_Case/> Also, she may be picking up on Akai's curiosity towards Shinichi which simply makes her nervous after Conan warned her about it.

===Okiya gave a cryptic answer why his favorite color is black - because Akai worked in the Black Organization===
Okiya declared that his favorite color is black, "because it covers things inside me that I don't want known", although he hates the color for the same reason.<ref name=623p7>Manga Volume 60, File 4, Page 7: Kuroshiro-kun</ref> The reason for this is Akai worked in the Black Organization as a mole, and he probably had to commit quite a few crimes in order to gain enough trust to progress up the Organization’s ranks. Haibara told Conan that she thought he was using her as bait in order to spy on Okiya.<ref>Manga Volume 65 File 6 Page 5: Accompanying Two Dangerous People</ref> This doesn't make sense because Conan would be putting everyone he cares about in danger. Conan would absolutely not let a potential Black Organization operative live near Haibara since, as neighbors, they have a high chance of meeting. The Black Organization operative would quickly figure out Haibara was Sherry, and anyone who knows her would be murdered. Also, by letting Okiya live in the house, it is certain that Okiya will find out Shinichi is alive. Conan himself told Okiya that Shinichi was alive when loaning his house keys out. If Okiya were a Black Organization agent, that would mean an inevitable death sentence for everyone Conan knows, including Ran, because the Black Organization would want to erase everyone who might know Shinichi was still alive and what he was investigating since Shinichi may have left compromising evidence behind. Basically, the Black Organization agent living next door is a death sentence. 
Conan previously acknowledged that his house would be one of the best places to spy on Haibara and him from.<ref name=Full_Moon>Manga Volume 42 File 5 Page 12: The Full Moon and the Trap at the Banquet</ref> It stands to reason that he might consider an ally like Akai living there a bonus, especially since the new agent Bourbon has been activated, despite the risk that Akai will figure out that Conan is Shinichi.

===What is the meaning of Okiya's line about "I've known his face..."? - it was a secret message for Conan===
In "Silent Clash", Okiya says something mysterious about seeing someone familiar from the Teito bank heist.<ref name=bank_heist>Manga Volume 65 Files 3-5: Detective Boys vs. Burglar Gang</ref> It was a message for Conan. Conan knows from what Okiya said that he had seen [[scar Akai]], and Okiya's comments that, "Actually, I happened to see him on that floor. Unfortunately, it seems he wasn't who I thought he was, so I didn't talk to him. I've known his face for a very long time... There's no way I could be mistaken."<ref name=Face>Manga Volume 67 File 8 Page 16: Silent Clash</ref> His quote can be parsed: "Actually, I happened to see that person who looked like Akai on that floor. This Akai wasn't the real Akai (since I'm the real one), and I didn't confront him. Being the real Akai, this scar Akai is obviously someone else..." Okiya is layering his conversation with a second meaning, confirming there is someone disguising as Akai for Conan's benefit, and Conan is surprised and nervous about the info since scar Akai is someone in disguise, possibly an operative from the Black Organization because they have the necessary information and motives.

In File 800, Vermouth stated she had made a promise with Bourbon, which would seem to suggest that Bourbon was Okiya. However, Akemi had left a still unknown P.S. in her last message to Akai. She had taken a big risk with her robbery mission, so it would be appropriate for Akemi to ask Akai to look after Shiho if the Black Organization betrayed her.

In many of his appearances, Okiya has been depicted as rather malevolent and suspicious. Gosho Aoyama often makes the culprit the person who would seem least likely to do it, whether through appearance, gender, or alibi strength. In this case, making Okiya seem very suspicious provides an emotional veneer of malevolence and draws attention away from clues indicating Okiya might not be Bourbon but Akai instead. This is further strengthened by the fact that he used the same tactic with both Jodie, Akai and Andre Camel, making them seem overly suspicious and have possible ties to the Black Organization but then revealing them to be FBI agents.

==Rebuttals of theories that Okiya is someone else==

===Okiya is probably NOT a third party or new character===
Okiya is unlikely to be a third party because he knows about Conan's tracking glasses and the detective badges.<ref name=X>Chapter 755 page 14: Communications Code</ref> Conan has never used the tracking glasses in front of Okiya. A third party would not be privy to Conan's gadgets. The mechanism to operate Conan's glasses isn't obvious, so only someone who knows about their existence beforehand could recognize the glasses at Agasa's and figure out how to activate the tracking function.
Shuichi Akai could have heard about the glasses in several ways. The first source is when [[James Black]] was kidnapped while he had [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]]'s detective badge. Conan used the badge to track down James Black. James was waiting to meet with Akai before he was kidnapped and drove away with Akai after he was rescued. Akai could have also heard about the tracking function from Jodie when Conan chased after Kir to prevent an assassination. Finally, Akai may also know about them from when Haibara borrowed the glasses to find Conan at the shipping yards at the climax of the Vermouth arc. He was present at the time and would have seen Haibara wearing them even though she has never worn glasses when Akai had seen her previously.

===Okiya is NOT Yusaku Kudo===
Okiya is unlikely to be [[Yusaku Kudo]] in disguise.

Okiya is unlikely to be Kaitou Kid since there is no evidence suggesting this is the case. Kid doesn't give Haibara the dark vibes in "Kichiemon's Crazy Mansion" case<ref name=Kichiemon>Manga Volume 46 Files 7-10: Strange Mansion Adventure</ref> or Kirin's Horn case<ref name=Kirin>Manga Volume 68 File 5-8: Kid vs. the Four Spirits of the Detective Boys</ref> when he is disguise or in his full Kaitou Kid regalia. Plus, it would require Kaito Kuroba juggle three personas: his own, Kid's, and Okiya's as well. That would be near impossible as Kaito has his own life in Ekoda, and Okiya spends more of his time in Beika. On top of that, during the mystery train arc, it was revealed that Kaito had disguised himself as Hiruka Sumitomo. But even tough we saw Okiya perform several actions, she was continuously in the presence of the other suspects, Conan and Kogoro.

==Scar Akai is not the real Akai==

===Scar Akai is right handed, not left handed like Akai===
[[Scar Akai]] used his right hand to fire a handgun, to hold his umbrella and to hand back a cellphone. It is unlikely Scar Akai is simply using his right hand because he injured his left. In the "Teito Bank Heist",<ref name=679p>Manga Volume 65 File 5: Shaking Heart</ref> he easily escaped the duct tape binding his hands, yet probably did not use the same method that Jodie used <ref name=678p6>Manga Volume 65 File 4 Page 6: The Trap</ref> because there was still duct tape over his mouth.<ref name=679p14>Manga Volume 65 File 5 Page 14 : Shaking Heart</ref> It doesn't make much sense for him to put the duct tape back over his mouth again afterwards. Removing the tape with only one hand, especially if it's his off hand, would be difficult especially if robbers are watching him. (His eyes were covered so Scar Akai couldn't be sure that no one was watching until the robbers pretended to be hostages which would give him only a few minutes to escape.) Switching handedness after head trauma does not appear to have been documented in scientific literature.

===Scar Akai's behavior does not make sense if he is Akai===

====Scar Akai doesn't appear to have lost his memory====
If Scar Akai is the real Akai, one must assume he either has his memory or he doesn't have it. If he has his memory, Akai would absolutely not wander around in the open since it puts Hidemi (Kir) at risk with no gains to be made from doing so. The Black Organization's actions in the "Thirteen Red Shirts" case<ref name=red_shirts>Manga Volume 67 File 5-8: 13 Red Shirts case</ref> demonstrate the danger.

If Akai does not have his memory, then it is plausible Akai would walk around in the open without knowing the danger he is in, however Scar Akai's actions strongly suggest his memory is still intact. He seems to be stalking the FBI by appearing before them: something he would not do if he had lost all of his memory. Further emphasizing the point, Akai also apparently left a warning message to Jodie on her drink coaster during the events of the thirteen red shirts case. If perhaps Scar Akai recognized the FBI a little and felt comfortable enough to leave Jodie a message, it is strange that he would not speak to the FBI agents since Scar Akai is clearly capable of speaking.<ref name=SC5>Manga Volume 68 File 5 Page 5: Silent Clash</ref> Scar Akai also appears to recognize Chianti.<ref name=SC12>Manga Volume 68 File 5 Page 12: Silent Clash</ref>

These contradictions are resolved if Scar Akai is someone else in disguise as Akai and is trying to gauge from the FBI's reactions whether the real Akai is dead or not.

====Scar Akai is faking inability to speak in front of the FBI====
Scar Akai has avoided speaking in front of the FBI. Jodie assumed he lost his voice at first, but it was later proven that Scar Akai is capable of speaking when he returned a phone.<ref name=SC5/> One may assume that Scar Akai became deaf but this does not explain why when Jodie called out to him and grabbed his arm, he didn't react at all. Deafness contradicts with his correct and prompt compliance with the robber's vocal demands at the Teito bank heist and the bomber's demands at the Beika dept store. If Scar Akai was deaf, he wouldn't have been able to solve the red shirts case because he wouldn't have been able to read the receipts to see the time of purchase. Even if Scar Akai could [[wiki:Lip reading|lip read]], if he was deaf he wouldn't have been able to figure out the bank robber's plans and know it was safe to remove his duct tape.

A more reasonable explanation is that Scar Akai is not Akai and avoided speaking because he is unable to imitate Akai's voice.

===Gin's actions suggest that he doesn't think Scar Akai is the real Akai===
Since Gin called Kir in the "Thirteen Red Shirts" case,<ref name=red_shirts/> he has held a gun to her head the entire time. After Gin observes Scar Akai<ref name=SC10>Manga Volume 68 File 5 Page 10: Silent Clash</ref>, he gives the order for Chianti to leave, and he lowers the gun from Kir's head.<ref name=SC13>Manga Volume 68 File 5 Page 13: Silent Clash</ref> While Gin might not have wanted to shoot someone with an unsilenced gun in front of a busy department store that is filled with police, if he thought that Kir was a traitor who had helped Akai fake his death, Gin would not have lowered his gun since Kir may attempt to retaliate in some fashion now that her cover has been blown. The lowering of the gun is concession on Gin's part that he knows or strongly suspects Scar Akai isn't the real Akai.

== Personality ==
Akai is a tenacious but stoic agent. Even in personal matters, he remains cool, even detached, from anyone, but his redeeming value is a great sense of loyalty to anyone he knows. He is a skilled and relentless pursuer and detective, qualities which have labeled him the number one enemy of the [[Black Organization]] and earned him the nickname "[[Silver Bullet]]". He looks forward to opportunities to hunt the Black Organization down and get revenge for [[Akemi]]. While usually professional, he often acts independently of the FBI, and even his boss [[James Black]] has trouble getting ahold of him. Shuichi gets along well with Conan, who share many personality traits.

Shuichi has an unhealthy tendency to prioritize his missions above the emotional wellbeing of his friends, coworkers, family, and love interests.<ref>Shuichi's fake death, while preserving Kir and allowing her to pass info to the FBI, has caused significant dysfunction within the FBI who believe him to be truly dead. Shuichi prefers to plan secretly, and will readily trick his friends and coworkers, even injuring them, if helps the success of his missions.<ref>FBI vs Org, Shuichi didn't tell the rest of the FBI he would cover Kogoro's agency. In Red vs Black, the return Kir plan and the fake death plan were both kept secret from the FBI. He ordered Camel to remove by force if necessary anyone who interfered which resulted in Jodie being knocked out. He later told Kir to hit Camel for real to make her escape look authentic.</ref> Shuichi is often forgiven for these transgressions because his judgment is usually sound and his plans work out well.<ref>In FBI vs Org, Shuichi was forgiven for covering Kogoro without telling his boss and for making the decision on his own to let the Black Organization leave without much resistance because he thought it might lead to a dangerous firefight downtown. Even though he means well, Shuichi is notably clumsy at trying to comfort and connect with others. As [[Okiya]], his technique to approach [[Haibara]] leaves her terrified of him, and repeated contact only intensifies her loathing. Despite his social awkwardness, Shuichi is not unempathetic; he gives Jodie some hope by leaving her a message in his own handwriting, and leaves her a very roundabout hint about his identity after knocking her down even though he cannot reveal the truth to her yet.

== Appearance ==
Akai is a tall man of Japanese descent with short wavy hair. His trademark features, by which people close to him have identified him are his eyes which have permanent bags underneath them that make him appear sleep deprived. Other characters often describe him as evil eyed or having a sharp gaze. His eyes are blue in the manga (like every other character) and green in the anime. He and [[Masumi Sera]] presumably more closely resemble their mother then their father.
The second trademark feature is his knit cap, which he is always shown wearing. When he was younger he had a grey fedora which Masumi now wears herself. Up to one year ago, he had very long waist length hair, which he cut after the death of Akemi Miyano "to freshen up." Akai is left-handed. He is a heavy smoker and his favorite drink is bourbon.

His outfit is a grey jacket on top of a collared black shirt, black pants, shoes, and his trademark black knit cap.

[[Conan Edogawa|Conan]], [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]], and the [[Detective Boys]] board a bus headed to a ski resort. Akai gets on the bus wearing a face mask in order to tail [[Jodie Starling]] and [[Vermouth]] who is disguised as Dr. [[Tomoaki Araide]]. The bus is hijacked by robbers demanding their boss be freed from prison and Conan discovers they must have an accomplice in the back row where Shuichi Akai is sitting. Akai becomes a suspect. After the boss is freed, the robbers call Akai and Araide up to the front to put on the hijackers' ski jackets. Conan ruins the hijackers' plans by directing the bus driver to slam on the brakes, sending the hijackers crashing to the floor. Akai keeps his footing and goes to attack one of the hijackers but is confused when the robber faceplants before he could strike: Conan's tranquilizer dart got him first. The police move in to apprehend the hijackers and Akai watches as Araide accosts Conan for wanting to leave before having the gash on his arm tended. Before moving out, Akai records a message saying he couldn't find Vermouth's target, [[Shiho Miyano]].<ref>It is clear Akai is looking for Shiho Miyano, Vermouth's target, because the FBI already know Araide is Vermouth at this point in time and don't need to look for her.</ref>

[[James Black]] plans to meet with Akai in a stadium lobby after the Paul & Annie animal circus show. He was unable to meet with Akai at first because he was accosted by reporters thinking he was the show's wealthy sponsor and dragged away from them by the Detective Boys. Akai and James probably haven't met in a while because James doesn't know Akai cut his previously waist length hair. James is then mistakenly kidnapped by criminals who plan to ransom him. Akai, looking for James Black, drives past the Detective Boys. A prior member of the Black Organization, Akai's gaze triggers Haibara's senses, and she whips around asking if Conan saw who was driving the Chevrolet truck.

Somehow, Akai figures out where James is and catches up to the kidnappers' fake police car and begins following it. Akai quickly zooms ahead when Conan and the police arrange for an army of police cars to box in the kidnappers' car to force it to stop. Akai drives by Agasa's car and looks in, and Conan shields Haibara from his view. In the confusion of the aftermath, James leaves with Akai before he could be questioned by police. James retells the events of the kidnapping and asks if Akai brought him to Japan to "make (Akai's) lover come back to (Akai)" Akai affirms this and says that he wants "his lover (koibito) to regret they ever left me with tears of blood."<ref name=327p18>Manga Volume 32, File 10, page 18: "A Stupid Plan"</ref>. Akai's "lover" is a reference to the ironic codename he gave Gin: "koibito" meaning lover. He later makes Gin cry the foretold tears of blood when Akai's bullet grazes Gin's cheek in the events of "Black Impact".

Conan suspects there is another Black Organization member who was present at the director's morning party after considering how Pisco obtained another purple handkerchief which enabled him to leave the investigation. Just when Conan begins to fear that Akai has taken care of Ran and Kogoro, he is relieved to find out that Ran had only gone out to buy meat. He again tries to ask Ran whether she she knows Akai, but changes his mind by shifting his sentence, thinking there is no way Ran would know a guy like Akai. The taxi driver and Ran both initially mistake Akai for the serial killer, and the taxi drives off leaving Ran behind. Akai asks Ran if she saw a man with long silver hair. One of Akai's colleagues comes up to ask Akai if he found the serial killer and Ran sees the FBI logo on his jacket. Akai grabs her elbow to take her from the area, but she resists because Shinichi is still around. The two people take several pictures, one of which Akai keeps in his truck after this. Conan and Yukiko notice the two are following. They continue to wait in the film developer's parking lot until Takagi asks them if they have been drinking at Conan's request. They report to Akai that they are unable to follow any more. Akai looks at the newly developed pictures they gave to him and he thinks Haibara's resemblance to Shiho Miyano is too similar to ignore.

Agasa calls Araide to pick up Haibara, and Akai overhears the conversation through the bugs planted in Araide's office. He follows Jodie and Araide to Agasa's house and waits out front listening in to the bugs Jodie just planted at Agasa's.

Conan and Jodie confront Vermouth and reveal her disguise. During the confrontation, Jodie is shot by [[Calvados]], a sniper who was hidden on some shipping crates. Calvados also attempts to shoot Ran who rushed to Haibara in order to shield her from the gunfire. Akai, unseen, sneaks from behind and disables Calvados, silently breaking both his legs and taking his rifle, shotgun, and three pistols. Akai walks around the shipping crates towards Jodie and Vermouth's location. Vermouth mistakes the incoming footsteps for Calvados and orders him to kill Jodie. Vermouth is shocked when it is Akai who walks into view. Akai then begins provoking Vermouth:

Provoked by his remark, Vermouth attempts to shoot him, but Akai fires the shotgun first into her flak jacket, breaking several of her ribs and tearing Vermouth's face slightly which proves that she isn't wearing a mask. To escape, Vermouth grabs the unconscious Conan as a hostage and roars away in Jodie's car. To prevent them from following, she aims with the side mirror and shoots Araide's car's gas tank, causing it to explode

Akai comments that they at least have her accomplice Calvados, but at that moment, Calvados commits suicide with a pocket pistol that Akai overlooked. Akai hears the police sirens and tells Jodie to make up a story about randomly getting involved in a kidnapping case. Akai's parting words to Jodie are that he still isn't ready to face Haibara, likely referring to his use of Haibara's sister, [[Akemi Miyano]], to infiltrate the Black Organization which resulted in her being killed when they uncovered that he was a spy.

Kogoro Mouri, Ran, and Conan help newscaster [[Rena Mizunashi]] with a door bell prank case. In order to catch the prankster, Conan sticks a bug and microphone wrapped in gum outside the door. The case is solved, but Conan forgets the bug and it gets stuck on Rena's shoe. Unfortunately Conan discovers Rena is a member of the Black Organization, [[Kir]], and she is participating in an [[Black Organization#Domon Yasudera|assassination mission]]. Conan has to retrieve the tracker before the Black Organization notices and suspects that Kogoro planted it. Jodie Starling contacts Akai and tells him about the predicament, but doesn't say what he will do to help. James Black comments that Akai was always the reticent type, but has closed up even more since the death of his girlfriend (later revealed to be [[Akemi Miyano]]).

After hearing a lot of static on their radios, Gin looks for the cause of the interference and finds Conan's tracker on Kir's shoe which had been left in his car when she changed clothes. With the boss's approval, Gin abandons the original assassination plans and heads towards the Mouri Detective Agency to kill Kogoro. Conan stops Kogoro from being assassinated, but Gin still has Conan's tracker which has his fingerprints on it. As Gin holds it up for a closer look, it is shot out from between his fingers by Akai who had set up with a sniper rifle on a building 700 yards away.

Gin, perhaps anticipating who would be responsible, grabs Korn's rifle and uses it to locate Shuichi Akai. At this time, Akai fires a bullet that passes through Gin's scope and grazes his left cheek causing it to bleed. At this time Akai says "we finally meet, my lovely, lovely koibito-san".<ref name=504p14>Manga Volume 49, File 4, pg 14: Black Organization vs. FBI 2</ref> Gosho Aoyama uses a Japanese literary device to give the word "koibito" a double meaning. Japanese in Detective Conan includes the pronunciation, called "[[wiki:furigana|furigana]]", in [[wiki:hiragana|hiragana]] next to the [[wiki:kanji|kanji]]. Normally the furigana matches the word in the kanji; however, Gosho Aoyama used the kanji for "old enemy" (宿敵), but the furigana for "koibito" (こいびと), giving Akai's word a double meaning. The true meaning of what Akai meant is "old enemy", but what he said out loud was the furigana "koibito". Akai had ironically nicknamed Gin "loved one" despite thinking of him as his arch enemy. By grazing Gin's cheek, Akai fulfilled his promise he made at the end of the James Black Kidnapping to make his "lover" bleed tears of blood.

Akai then fired twice into Gin's bullet proof vest to encourage him to leave quietly, purposefully avoiding killing Gin although he was capable of finishing him. Akai's stated reason for letting Gin and the rest of the Black Organization members go was to avoid having a gunfight erupt in the middle of Beika city where innocent people might be injured.<ref name=504p17>Manga Volume 49, File 4, pg 17: Black Organization vs. FBI 2</ref> Despite Gin's reservations, Akai also successfully made the Black Organization think that the FBI was behind the tracker, and that Kogoro had been the bait to draw them into Akai's range.

One condition of her reintegration, however, was that she should personally kill Akai, who had been declared the Organization's most dangerous enemy. Mizunashi lured him to an isolated spot for a meeting and shot him at point-blank range before incinerating his truck with a bomb.

Conan asks Ran more about the clue Eisuke found and discovers that it was someone dialing the [[Anokata|Black Organization's boss's phone number]]. Jodie reports to Akai that a member of the Black Organization has infiltrated the hospital. Akai takes the news in stride and goes to Rena's room. He already suspects Rena is a member of the CIA as well, and wants to use her to gain more leverage against the Organization.

Conan asks one of the nurses about Eisuke and she tells Conan about a different patient, a member of the Black Organization, who had asked about Rena Mizunashi. Akai seems pleased to hear the news, and thinks it is a good opportunity to add a second lead. The FBI gets profiles of three patients most likely to be the Black Organization member and Conan films them. Akai and Conan both correctly deduce the member of the Black Organization hiding in the hospital is [[Kusuda Rikumichi]]. The FBI watch Kusuda, but get caught and he threatens to blow up a bomb. Kusuda escapes in a car with Akai and Conan in hot pursuit. After realizing it is Akai who is chasing him, Kusuda commits suicide. Akai knows that now Kusuda's reports have stopped, the Black Organization will know Rena is at the Haido Central Hospital and plan a counter-attack.

The FBI hold a meeting and decide that they have to move Kir now that the Black Organization knows she is at Haido Central Hospital. Akai proposes that the best idea is to set a trap for the Organization by allowing them to come after Kir and then ambushing them. Akai heads to the roof alone to think of a plan. Conan takes the opportunity to ask James Black about Akai's past. James reveals that Akai wants revenge for his girlfriend who was killed by the Organization. Akai had infiltrated the Organization under the name Dai Moroboshi by dating Miyano Akemi in order to get close to a [[Sherry|high ranking scientist]], feed information to the FBI, and hopefully learn the identity of [[anokata|the boss]].<ref>Manga Chapter 599: Akai's Past</ref> Dai earned the codename "Rye" and was called to work for [[Gin]], but the FBI bungled the plan to capture Gin, so Akai was discovered and expelled from the Organization. James Black further explains that the Organization wanted to get rid of Akemi too, but couldn't because her sister was too valuable to them. The Organization came up with a plan to have Akemi perform [[Volume_2#File_013_-_The_Missing_Man|a billion yen bank heist]] as an excuse to kill her when she failed. Contrary to the Org's expectations, Akemi succeeded but was killed by Gin regardless. Akai has kept the last text message from Akemi asking if Akai will date her for real if she leaves the Organization. There is a further P.S. that has not been revealed.

Conan and Akai meet on the roof and exchange plans. Their first move is to get Kir's cooperation. Akai and Conan trick the FBI officers on guard to leave Kir's room which provides an opportunity for Eisuke to sneak in and "wake the sleeping princess". With Eisuke's provocation, Kir stops pretending that she is unconscious. Conan and Akai enter the room, and Akai escorts Eisuke out so that they can convince Kir to return to Organization. Akai and Conan answer Kir's questions about how they found out she was a CIA agent and she fills them in on her past. Kir agrees to their plan to trick the Organization and promises to funnel information back to the FBI as well. Akai calls [[Andre Camel]] to help with their secret plan which requires also fooling the FBI who don't yet know Kir is a CIA agent.

The FBI plans to put Rena in one of three vans and trick the Organization into chasing one of the decoys while the van with Kir in it is driven by Camel back to hospital. Meanwhile, the Organization launches their counterattack. They cause three separate accidents nearby to flood the hospital with people and then give them gifts with small bombs hidden inside. Akai suspects they may be trying to kill Kir by detonating the bombs and collapsing the hospital. Akai and the FBI collect the bombs from the innocent patients, but are startled when the TV starts airing an announcement from Mizunashi Rena in the hospital. Akai and Conan realize the bombs have tracking devices embedded in them, but they aren't fast enough to stop the rest of the FBI agents from going to Kir's room.

With the location of Kir's room exposed, the FBI launch the three van plan without delay. Akai in his Chevrolet follows one of the vans from a distance and he is eventually found by Vermouth who had been assigned by the boss to look for him. Gin correctly deduces which van Kir is in and recaptures her all according to Conan and Akai's plan. The FBI are at first very dismayed they failed, but then Akai explains the plan to them and that they were left out of the loop in order to make the Organization believe they were not set up. Gin, however, is suspicious that Akai didn't interfere more strongly when they recaptured Kir and that Akai may have something else up his sleeve.

==== Death at Raiha Pass (Manga: [[Volume_58#Foreign_Suspect_Case|605-609]], Anime: [[Clash of Red and Black|501-504]]) ====
Gin is suspicious of how ineffective the FBI's plan was and that Akai didn't make a strong move. Gin thinks Akai is still hiding something and that doubt is relayed to [[anokata|the boss]] who plans a test of Kir's loyalty. Meanwhile, [[Andre Camel]] becomes a suspect in a coincidental murder case. Akai is somewhat amused at the predicament, and Jodie plans to go to Andre Camel and bail him out. As Jodie leaves, Akai calls out to her and says he has a bad feeling about today, and that she should be careful. Jodie notes it is Friday the thirteenth.

The Black Organization takes advantage of the distraction provided by Andre Camel's murder case, and Gin meets with Kir and conveys [[anokata|the boss's]] ultimatum: Kir must kill Akai in order to regain the Organization's trust. Gin explains that Kir will call out Akai with the excuse that she wants to flee the country because the Organization is pressuring her after she was caught by the FBI. Akai will take the bait if Kir says she will give him good information. When she meets with him alone, Kir will kill Akai while wearing a camera and bug. Gin will be watching out of range of Akai's acute sense for traps. With Gin's gun at her back, Kir calls Akai.

At the murder case, Jodie meets up with Camel and their discussion turns to Camel's mistake which caused Akai to be rejected from the Organization two years ago. Camel explains that Akai had just been promoted, and the FBI planned to capture Gin who was set to meet with Akai. The FBI hid in the warehouse waiting for Gin, but instead an old man walked in and sat down. Akai ignored the old man, but Camel came out from hiding and told the old man to leave. The old man turned out to be a member of the Organization, and Gin never showed. This lead to a chain of events leading to Akai's girlfriend [[Miyano Akemi]]'s death almost two years later. Camel, who felt most responsible, felt obligated to take the role of driver for the plan to return Kir.

Meanwhile Akai, sitting in his truck, remembers some of the last moments he had with Akemi. Akai revealed to her that he was an FBI agent. She seemed to already know, prompting Akai to desperately ask her why she didn't get away from him. Akemi's simple tearful reply was, "Can't you tell without asking?" Akai is brought back to present by [[James Black]] telling him that his phone is ringing. Kir is on the other end, and relays Gin's concocted story and asks to meet Akai alone. James's impression is that the meeting with Rena is likely a trap and that Akai shouldn't go. Akai confidently says that he is sure his sixth sense will work and that he will trust Rena to have some way out of the situation. James starts to call Jodie as support but, the confidently grinning Akai stops James from dialing and asks for his trust. The meeting location is set at 19:00 at the seventh left curve of Raiha falls and Akai heads out.

Akai arrives at the meeting place where Kir is waiting from the other side after scouting out ahead. Kir shoots Akai in the lung as Gin and Vodka watch from across the gorge via Kir's collar camera. Blood trickling from his mouth, Akai turns and sees their Porsche and smirks to himself. Kir tells Gin he will die soon from the lung shot, but Gin orders that Kir makes his death certain by shooting Akai in the head. As Kir walks up to him, Akai seems to accept his impending doom with great calm.<ref>Manga Chapters 605-608: Foreign Suspect Case</ref> He calmly remarks that he didn't think that she would go this far, to which she agrees. Kir shoots Akai in the forehead, with blood cascading from both sides of his head. Akai collapses in the front seat of his truck. At that moment the police on the way to an accident begin to approach and Gin orders Kir to place a bomb and blow Akai's truck up with the body. Kir plants the bomb and leaves. It detonates just as the police pass by. The ensuing explosion and fire destroys most of the body but the right hand fingerprints survive.

Jodie and Camel leave the murder case as the police finish wrapping it up return the the hospital where the FBI meet. James announces that Kir set up a meeting alone with Akai and the a news program begins reporting on a truck that exploded with a body inside whose right hand fingerprints remain intact. Jodie wonders if it is Akai, and takes Conan's phone which Akai had touched earlier with his right hand to the police. The fingerprint results are a match, Jodie reports the news to James and then breaks down crying. James remarks that they can't blame Rena Mizunashi for this as she had warned them. He sadly comments that with Akai, they managed to drive a wedge of steel in the Black Organization, but his death was a price far too big.

===== Faked Death? =====

Several abnormalities surrounding Akai's death invite the possibility that Akai faked his death with Conan and Mizunashi Rena's help. Inconsistent details like disappearing blood trails are evidence Akai's body was tampered with by someone other than Kir, and Conan's reaction to the news of Akai's death is suspiciously subdued. The theory is that Akai's death was faked by using blank cartridges and blood packets with small detonators to simulate gunshots. When Kir moves to the front of Akai's truck to prepare the bomb, it creates a gap of time where Gin and Vodka cannot see Akai's body with Kir's camera. At this time, Akai switches places with [[Rikumichi Kusuda]]'s body which had been dressed up beforehand to look like Akai. Akai escapes the truck before it explodes. Meanwhile Conan's will loan Jodie Starling one of his identical cellphones which has Rikumichi's fingerprints on it. She will think they are Akai's and when she goes to validate the identity of the body with the police, it will match Rikumichi's fingerprints and she will be fooled into thinking Akai died. Incidentally, "Reiha Pass" also sounds a lot like "Raihenbahha" which is the Japanese pronunciation of "Reichenbach", the fall where Holmes fell off together with Moriarty but survived.

Shuichi Akai and Akemi Miyano were lovers while he was infiltrating the [[Black Organization]]. Akai's original mission was to date Akemi Miyano in order to meet Shiho Miyano. Akai used Shiho's influence to gain rank in the Organization, intending to become trusted enough to meet with high level agents so the FBI could capture one for questioning. As [[James Black]] later recalls, although Akai's relationship with Akemi was merely a stepping stone, Akai actually fell in love with Akemi, and considered her his real girlfriend. Because of this he broke up with [[Jodie Starling]].

Sometime later, Akemi develops the suspicion that Akai really wasn't who he claimed to be. After Akai's expulsion, he confirms that he is an FBI agent to her. To Akai's surprise, Akemi doesn't seemed surprised by this, so Akai asks her why she never said anything about her suspicions that she was being used by him before, and Akemi hints it is because she loves him. Initially, the Organization couldn't do anything about Akemi because they needed the loyalty of her sister, but two years later they decided that the risk of her contact with Akai was too much. They decided to create a situation where they could eliminate her by having her do a bank heist she was supposed to fail. Sometime near the day of the heist, Akemi sent Akai a long text message, asking him if he wants to be her real boyfriend when she is finally free from the Organization. After the heist, Akemi is killed by [[Gin]], and it is unknown how Akai responded if at all. Akai treasures her final text message, and keeps it in his phone many months after Akemi's death. The message also contains a P.S. which has not been revealed yet.

How Akemi and Akai met in the manga is unknown, but in the anime, Shuichi Akai originally met Akemi by an intentional accident. She accidentally hit him with her car when he deliberately walked into the street in front of her in order to be hit by her.<ref>Episode 497</ref> Akemi was concerned, and helped take him to the hospital, watching over him until he was better. When he woke up, he felt no anger over what she did, and even asked for her name, to which a very flustered Akemi replied, while he told her his fake name: Dai Moroboshi. After this they began dating.

Misaki-chan has a very friendly personality and is seen as an optimist, though in reality is a realist. She can be very mature at times, but is mostly immature. She can also be rather bipolar, slapping Forever Lost and crying/apologizing in the same post.

Misaki-chan began to call Forever Lost 'Je-chan' soon after he r discovery that her and IdentityUnknown share the same name, only spelt differently.

Originally meeting through one of the threads in the Game area, the topic of LHC (which had just recently got started) came up and the two members began to talk about it. Soon after, ANTI-APTX4869 became the first male member. The two members get along very well, chatting often and hugging often due to both of their love for hugs. They act similat in mannerism and share common interests.

Misaki-chan was the member who came up with the nickname 'Cure-kun', to the relief of the members tired of writing 'ANTI-APTX'. Though originally the nickname was 'Cure-chan', do to confusion of gender, Misaki-chan soon fixed her mistake and changed the honorific to -kun. The idea from the nickname came from a post ANTI-APTX4869 had written, explaining the basis of his username.

=== Lady Irene Adler ===
These two first met on the thread created by Lady Irene Adler to introduce herself to DCW, though not much interaction occured. They began to talk in the Game area, which led to a bit more interaction. In the "Give The Person Above You A Nickname" forum game, Lady Irene Adler gave Misaki-chan the nickname "misaki nee chan" in which she responded "Irene-imouto!". Later, it was discovered that Lady Irene Adler was older than Misaki-chan, which she later apologized for. But liking the sister thing and not wanting to let it go, Misaki-chan gave her the new nickname "Neechan" which is still used today. They soon became better friends when Lady Irene Adler joined LHC. The two talk the most on the threads in the Game area.

The two members know each other in real life. This fact became clear with the several references to Misaki-chan in akane's introduction. The member is the only one so far to call akane "Sayuri" due to reasons. They are very close and get along very well. She is also the one who called Misaki-chan's hugs "the Hug of Death". Akane does not always enjoys the hug, especially when lifted off the ground and twirled.

Though these two members do not talk often except occasionally in threads, they get along well. She has been given the nickname 'CJ-chan' though Misaki-chan tends to use 'Chelsea' as of late.

Misaki-chan was the third member to join LHC after reading Forever Lost's and IdentityUnknown's conversation about making the club. Later, she mentioned making a thread for it, which IdentityUnknown made for her and getting a sig that promoted LHC, which turned into a united sig for all LHC members. She is currently co-leader of the club atfter giving IdentityUnknown her spot as leader back. Her life story is up on the thread and is open for all to read. She posts there frequently.
