He is a recently dispatched operative who specializes in deduction and intelligence gathering and frequently works with [[Vermouth]]. Rei poses as a private detective who first appeared as a waiter while helping a client with a case, and later becomes a waiter at Café Poirot and [[Kogoro Mouri|Kogoro]]'s apprentice.

==Background==
Rei's past within the [[Black Organization]] is unknown, but it seems he has been tied to them for a while. He knew [[Shiho Miyano]]'s parents who died when Shiho was young suggesting that he has some involvement since he was a teenager.<ref name=824p5>Manga Volume 78, File 7 (824), Page 5: "Mystery Train: Final Destination"</ref> He was the rival of [[Shuichi Akai]] (alias Dai Moroboshi) who was [[Akemi Miyano|Akemi]]'s lover at the time.<ref name=824p5/> He had suspected Dai Moroboshi was a spy for the FBI which turned out to be the case.<ref name=824p5/>

Soon after Shuichi Akai's death, [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] called [[Jodie Starling]] to report that a new member of the Black Organization called Bourbon had been dispatched. Kir said that Bourbon's target was the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano and that Bourbon has excellent information gathering skills and keen insight.<ref name=622p4>Manga Volume 60, File 3, Page 4: "Red, White and Yellow"</ref> Later Tooru Amuro appears as a free-lance private detective who also maintains employment on the side that may aid in investigation, like his part-time job as a waiter at Ristorante Sundayrino. == Personality ==

Rei has a cheerful personality. He is also generous, bringing a plate of sandwiches for the detective agency bought with his money. In more serious situations, he seems to be patient, keeping calm even while others are abusing him. Although somewhat of a "cool type", he does not hide his emotions and is quite expressive. Like other detectives in ''[[Detective Conan]]'', he enjoys presenting his deductions about cases to others. Kogoro calls him "effeminate".

Rei has a darker side. He is manipulative, tricking others into performing certain actions so he can gather information. He favors using psychological traps and catching his enemies offguard. Rei can also be extremely cruel in the pursuit of goals. He planned to run over and hospitalize an elementary school teacher with his car in order to lure out FBI agents, and he would have allowed a suspect destroy his exonerating evidence in order to test Kogoro. Rei alternates between going out of his way to care about the wellbeing others and ignoring them when it is inconvenient. As Scar Akai, he saved Conan at the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|Teito bank heist]], but neglected to inform Ran and Kogoro later when he noticed that Conan might have been kidnapped by a murderer in [[Detectives' Nocturne]].

[[Gin]] says Bourbon has a secretive personality like [[Vermouth]], and that no one can ever guess what he's up to or what he will do.<ref name=703p3/> [[Vodka]] says that Bourbon hates Shuichi Akai even more than Gin does, although a reason for this hatred is not given.<ref name=703p3/> Bourbon believes he is the only person capable of killing Akai.<ref name=703p3/> Gin said that if Bourbon found out Akai was alive, he would surely boast that his suspicion was correct.<ref name=703p3/> Gin and Bourbon probably don't get along and they don't seem to communicate with one another.<ref name=703p3/>

He has dark skin, lighter than, but closer to [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]]'s color and has dyed blond hair. He wears glasses at first, but it is unknown if he actually needs them because he was using them to conceal his identity at the time and takes them off midway through the case and has not had them on since. Unlike other Black Organization members, he dresses mostly casually and sometimes wears outfits with only a little black. This may be because he is undercover and is trying to blend in.

==Mission==
Bourbon's primary mission was to search for the escaped scientist [[Shiho Miyano]], which the [[CIA]] spy [[Kir]] heard about and informed the [[FBI]] of. He also had a second secret mission fueled by his hunch that his archenemy Shuichi Akai should not have died so easily;<ref name=703p3>Manga [[Volume 67]], File 7, page 3: "The Truth Amidst the Snowstorm"</ref> he received [[Anokata|the boss's]] permission to verify Akai's death. He approached the FBI as [[Scar Akai|an Akai lookalike]] by using [[Vermouth]]'s disguise help hoping to see if Akai was truly dead.<ref name=824p7>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 7 (824), pg 7: "Final Destination"</ref> He later apprenticed himself to [[Kogoro Mouri]] because Bourbon suspected the detective may be connected to Sherry.<ref name=827p16>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 10 (827), pg 16: "The key to solving the mystery"</ref> (Kogoro was previously suspected of being linked to Sherry because the [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|tracker]], [[microphone]], and gum combo Gin found on Kir's shoe after [[Black Impact! Jodie passes this information onto [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]. Before Bourbon appeared as Tooru Amuro, he disguised as [[Scar Akai|Akai with a large burn]] with [[Vermouth]]'s help. In this disguise, he approached the close friends of Shuichi Akai to gauge whether he was truly dead. Bourbon first used the disguise to approach [[Jodie Starling]] at [[Teito Bank]], then [[Andre Camel]] at [[Beika Department Store]], he also sends Kogoro a text message on his deduction of the current case using a borrowed phone from a bystander. Whether he did this out of concern for the hostages or his own well being is unknown.

Rei (under the alias Tooru Amuro) is hired by to-be-bride Hatsune Kamon to investigate whether her to-be-husband, Raita Banba, is cheating on her. As part of the investigation, Rei tells Kamon to have their pre-wedding celebration at the restaurant, Ristorante Sundayrino, where he works as a waiter. He purposefully drops some cake on Banba's pants trying to make Banba too embarrassed to approach women later. Banba complains about Amuro's "mistake", but Kamon tells Amuro it's alright to protect him. Banba later gets drunk, and Amuro has to point out his phone is ringing. [[File:Amuro_abuse.jpg|thumb|left|220px|Amuro gets knocked over by a case suspect]]Banba goes to the bathroom to meet the person who called him, the detective Sanji Haruka, who Banba hired to find out if Kamon was cheating on him. Sanji had been following the wife and discovered her meeting with Amuro, so Sanji mistakenly reports Kamon is having an affair with Amuro. Sanji confirms Amuro has a matching voice by asking Amuro to repeat his order, a bourbon on the rocks.

Banba is furious at Amuro and begins to harass him; like shouldering him and knocking Amuro over in front of the other waiters. Later Kamon dies in a car fire that is ruled an arson, and Banba accuses Amuro of starting it because he is Kamon's lover. Amuro denies this and says that Banba may have been trying to disguise wounds he received while fighting with Kamon by tripping Amuro. Amuro then takes off his glasses and reveals himself to be a private detective hired by Kamon, not her lover.

After Amuro correctly gives his deduction that Sanji was a detective hired by Banba, Kogoro accuses Amuro of driving Kamon to suicide by telling her about her husband's shameless flirting, but Amuro denies contacting Kamon by phone. Amuro accuses Banba of being the murderer, which antagonizes Banba into to rushing him. Amuro dodges and trips Banba and asks Kogoro to hold Banba's legs. From the condition of the bottom of Banba's shoes and Amuro's detailed background investigation of Banba and Kamon, [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] is able to deduce that Kamon's death was really a suicide. Amuro continues to accuse Banba after more DNA evidence comes in, but Conan prevents his arrest by using [[Kogoro#Detective_Skills|Sleeping Kogoro]] to ask Banba a critical question that reveals he never stepped outside. Amuro challenges Kogoro's deduction, suggesting that maybe Banba used a [[Shuichi Akai|knit cap]] and [[Scar Akai|long windbreaker]] to disguise himself, but Sleeping Kogoro counters by pointing out the condition of Banba's shoes. Defeated, Amuro demands Kogoro explain the matching DNA, which he does, revealing that Kamon and Banba are identical twins, but Kamon had a chromosomal abnormality that resulted in her being phenotypically female. Humbled, Amuro explains the abnormality condition to those present which [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] confirms.

One day later, Amuro has started work as a waiter at [[Setting#Cafe_Poirot|Café Poirot]] below [[Setting#The_Mouri_Detective_Agency|Mouri Detective Agency]]. He asks Kogoro if he can be Kogoro's apprentice and whispers some unheard amount of money per case that he is will pay if Kogoro brings Amuro along with him. The amount thrills Kogoro into accepting Amuro's offer immediately. Conan mentally moans about how yet another bothersome person has appeared.

While Kogoro and the gang are watching a news report on a recent bank robbery, Amuro stops by with sandwiches from the Poirot after finishing his part time job for the day. After commenting on the robbery, Amuro reveals that he wants the scoop on Kogoro's newest case request after deducing from Kogoro's appearance and habits that Kogoro had a case. Kogoro gets a text from the client requesting that Kogoro switch the meeting location to the [[Setting#Cafe_Columbo|Café Columbo]], and Amuro goes with them after changing out of his work clothes. At the Columbo, Kogoro explains to Amuro the request was to find the locker a key belongs to. The client fails to show, so Amuro, Kogoro, Conan, and Ran go back to the Detective Agency to make sure the client didn't actually turn up there instead. When Amuro arrives at the agency, he and Conan notice someone had broken in and appeared to have intercepted the client while they were out. Stepping outside, Amuro explains his deductions to the rest of the gang and that the culprit is hiding in the restroom. [[File:Amuro796.jpg|thumb|left|220px|Amuro and Conan heard the gunshot]] Before Amuro can open the bathroom door, a gunshot rings out, and Conan rushes in to find a dead man who apparently committed suicide with a gun and a taped-up crying woman. The woman's story is that the now-dead guy was interrogating her about the key and locker and committed suicide when Kogoro returned early, but Amuro and Conan suspect she is lying and may have murdered the man.

Amuro questions the woman a little, and Megure comments to Kogoro about he has yet another detective hanging around him. Curious, Amuro asks about [[Masumi Sera|the other detective]] and hears she is a young girl. Amuro offers to drive the formerly tied up woman to her home after questioning was postponed until the next day. Conan, Ran and Kogoro come along for the ride. At the woman's house, Conan, Amuro, and Kogoro announce they need to use the restroom and go inside. Ran turns on her cellphone and immediately gets a call from Sera, who was worried after seeing the news of the murder. The call is full of static, and Amuro suddenly shuts Ran's phone and announces the place is bugged, which is interfering with the cellphone signal. Amuro gets out a bug detector and begins sweeping the house.
Ran, Amuro, and Kogoro find several bugs before coming across a large suitcase under a bed that is emitting a horrible smell. They opened the bugged suitcase and find a corpse inside.

Soon afterwards, it was revealed that the culprit was indeed the woman, who sent Kogoro a message claiming that she was having Conan in her hands. During the investigation, they have found out a video recording summary, which contains many news about the robbery, inside the TV. Amuro then quickly gave out the speculation that the apartment might actually belonged to one of the robbers instead. Ran didn't understand how a detective of such level of intelligence could willingly become her father's apprentice. However, Amuro modestly answered that Kogoro was just testing him, and that he still had got much to learn.

Later, they decided to check up the house's computer, which was protected with password. Amuro discovered that the password was hidden under the desk, but instead of revealing the fact directly, he chose to hint Kogoro and Ran about it. After having gained access to the computer,
they have all found out the identity of the third robber and her location, where Conan's kidnapper would most likely pay a visit. They followed the address and drive to that place, Sera approached them closely from behind. However, while still on the road, they suddenly learned that the third robber had been overwhelming both Conan and the killer, and they were in serious danger. Right after determining the exact car that those three were in, Amuro purposely crashed his own car into theirs in order to stop it. In the end, the robber was defeated by Sera, Conan was safe. Amuro, Sera, Okiya (who was driving Agasa and Haibara to the scene) were all shown to receive a mysterious call. Vermouth called Bourbon and commented that he had gained some trust<ref>It wasn't specified whose trust</ref> and that she expected him to keep his (unstated) promise to her.

Amuro has a day off of work. After Amuro had his encounter with Sera in the previous case, he notices that she looks like Akai, so Amuro once again disguises himself as Akai to gauge her reaction. However, like Jodie and Camel before her, Sera was just as shocked by his appearence.

Conan and the [[Detective Boys]] encounter Amuro who was coming from the police station due to the event of the [[Detectives' Nocturne|"Online Client"]] case. Because he had crashed his car into the car of the woman who kidnapped Conan, he was called to come there and finish some procedures so the police could determine whether his action had been overkill. He expresses his disappointment at not being able to meet [[Professor Agasa]] with them. He also states that he had another purpose for coming to the station, but when asked by Conan what it is, Amuro claims that it "has already disappeared".

Later, when [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] is still trapped, he reminisces of a time with his mentor [[Wataru Date]] and he said that Date was the top student at the police academy. However, Date rebutted this and told Takagi that he had always been number 2. He also said that neither his brains nor his brawn was anything compared to that guy who was like a gentleman. Later, it's revealed that the person whom Date was talking about is Amuro. He leaves a toothpick by Date's grave and watches Takagi and Sato pay their respects. Before leaving, he deletes a text message that Date sent him, while thinking "Rest in peace, my friend..."

Ran and Kogoro are being served by Amuro at the Poirot. Presumably in reponse to being asked about Conan's absence, Kogoro tells Amuro that Conan and the [[Detective Boys]] went camping in Gunma, and they will be sending pictures to Kogoro's computer later. When Sera calls Ran to ask about [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Volkswagen_Beetle|what sort of vehicle Agasa drives]], Amuro listens suspiciously. Late that night, Amuro furtively sneaks into the empty Mouri Detective Agency and logs onto Kogoro's website using the password Kogoro inadvertently told him [[Tooru_Amuro#Murder_at_Mouri_Detective_Agency_.28Manga:_796-800.29|in an earlier case]]. Instead of pictures from the Detective Boys' camping trip that he was expecting, he sees a video sent by someone (Mitsuhiko) that shows [[Shiho Miyano]] rescuing [[Ayumi]] from a cabin fire. He is shocked, and then he zooms in on her hand and notices she is wearing a pass ring for the Bell Tree Express mystery train. Amuro then notices that Kogoro's computer was being hacked [[Subaru Okiya|by someone]] and wonders who did it. Amuro passes over the information that Shiho appeared in Gunma and will be boarding the mystery train to Vermouth who will relay it to Gin.

Amuro appears on the train where he runs into Ran and the others. When asked what he is doing there, Amuro claims he won his tickets in an online auction and that he coincidentally met Kogoro in the dining cart where he learned of the case. When Masumi Sera runs off to find Scar Akai (Vermouth), Amuro is seen with his phone out contacting Vermouth that she was heading her way. He then comes when Conan (through Kogoro) starts his deduction on the murder culprit and reveals that three mirror plates were stuffed in a painting which was used for the locked room murder trick.

However, after the culprit confesses, Vermouth activated smoke canisters throughout the train in order to lure Ai Haibara (who supposedly transformed back to Shiho Miyano) out. After that is successful, Amuro introduces himself to her by calling himself Bourbon. He goes on to ask Shiho if she knows who he is to which she claims that he was a rival to her sister's love Dai Moroboshi (Shuichi Akai). Amuro starts to gloat saying that he knew Akai was FBI and that he couldn't believe that he was killed. He then says he decided to disguise as Akai in front of those close to him, although he asked Vermouth to disguise as him on the train. From that, he could only conclude that Akai really died. Putting Shiho at gunpoint, he tells her to go into the eighth cart so he can detach it with C4 explosives and bring her back to the organization. However, Shiho reveals that there are more C4 explosives in the train, when Amuro realizes that Vermouth put them there and that she plans to have Sherry killed. However, before he can do anything else, the real Akai (whom Amuro mistook as Vermouth) comes behind him and throws a grenade to detach the eighth cart. Amuro dodges the explosive relatively unscathed and the eighth cart explodes, but Shiho (who was really Kaitou Kid in disguise) is able to escape. Amuro then regroups with Vermouth and asks her to give him the files on before and after Akai's death. He thinks to himself that he'll have to start from square one, while Okiya, who is revealed to be Shuichi Akai watches on silently.

After the events of the Bell Tree express, Amuro went on sick leave which Conan took as a sign that he wasn't planning to return. However, to Conan's horror, Amuro had asked Kogoro if he and Sonoko wanted tennis lessons. He meets them at a tennis court and reveals he will be coming back to work at the Poirot next week. When a tennis racket accidentally slips from a player's hand, Amuro tries to warn Conan that it will hit him, but Conan is unable to dodge it in time. Conan is knocked unconscious, and Amuro rushes over and does everything to make sure Conan is assisted medically before a real doctor arrives to check Conan's condition. When Conan awakens, he finds out he was moved to the house of the person who hit him with the racket. After an apology, the group asks if Amuro, Sonoko, and the Mouris would like to play doubles tennis with them. Conan goes off to take a nap, but a loud noise wakes him up, and he discovers one of the players has been murdered and the body is locked in the room with him. Worried about the noise, Amuro picks the room's lock and tries to open the door, but Conan yells at him to stop as there is a beaten body next to it. When the police come to investigate, Amuro helps in the investigation. As Conan prepares to tranquilize Kogoro, Amuro, starting to get suspicious, bends down to examine Conan aiming his watch, which prevents Conan from using it. Conan is instead forced to give out hints to lead Kogoro and the police to the right answer. After the case is over, Amuro and Vermouth have a phone conversation. Vermouth asks why Amuro is still sticking around the Mouri Detective Agency when there is no need to because Sherry has been dealt with, and Amuro responds that he is interested by ''Sleeping Kogoro''. As he says this, he thinks of Conan instead, implying he suspects Conan is the real Sleeping Kogoro.

The Detective Boys become trapped in a refrigerated delivery truck with a cat, a dead body, and two murderous workers. Unable to call for help and out of other options, Conan decides to try to get a message to Amuro using the cat and a doctored receipt. The receipt initially blew away, but after realizing it was from Conan, Amuro tracks it down using a specialized app on his phone that can simulate wind conditions between the buildings in Beika city. Amuro locates the delivery truck in his repaired [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Amuro.27s_Mazda_RX-7|Mazda RX-7]]. The Black Organization agent decides to pretend like he came by chance instead of decoding the message on the receipt, and asks the two delivery men to make way because the street is narrow. When the kids see him and cry for help, Amuro, playing dumb, asks why they are in that truck. One of the murderers then orders Amuro to get in the truck by threatening the safety of the children. Amuro immediately punches the man's chest so hard that he coughs up blood. The remaining kidnapper backs down and Amuro ties him up and tells Conan to call the police. The children then reveal that they are outside of Agasa's house, which Amuro takes interest in. Haibara manages to stay behind the other kids and goes unnoticed by Amuro, and Okiya watches the unfolding scene from Shinichi's house's window.

===A Shrine to Remember (Manga: [[Volume 80|850]]-[[Volume 81|852]], Anime: [[Jodie's Memories and the Cherry Blossom Viewing Trap|734]])===
Suspecting that they may hold more valuable information for his investigation, Amuro follows Conan and Jodie to a sakura viewing scenic spot and attempts to approach them using someone else's appearance. He, with Vermouth's assistance, impersonates a random man named [[List of Black Organization related characters|Touhei Benzaki]], after having knocked him unconscious. Unknowing to Amuro, the real Benzaki has just been pickpocketed by a female thief.

In front of Conan and Jodie, Amuro claims to be the husband of the woman who taped Jodie back in the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|bank robbery case]], where he was also one of the victims himself. He also says that he saw [[Scar Akai]] a few days back, to which both of them react strongly. Jodie immediately grabs Amuro's arm and questions him where did that happen, while he takes advantage of the chance and secretly plants an eavesdropping device inside the sleeve of her jacket. Suddenly, the female thief approaches them in an attempt to steal Jodie's money. She recognizes Benzaki's face and worries that he may figure out about her action, but Amuro pays no further attention to her. After that, he declares not remembering the place that he saw Scar Akai due to his cold; and during a conversation with Jodie, Amuro learns that [[Shuichi Akai]] likes drinking canned coffee and has dropped one back when the Organization was trying to [[Clash of Red and Black|attack]] Haido Central Hospital. Jodie also implies that she knows Scar Akai and the real Akai are not the same person. She hands to Amuro her phone number and asks him to contact her if he happens to recall anything.

Later, the female thief is murdered by one of her victims and Amuro (as Touhei Benzaki) unwillingly becomes one of the suspects. Through the eavesdropping device planted earlier, Amuro is able to listen to Jodie's conversations with Conan, where she mentions how Conan assisted the FBI in unmasking [[Rikumichi Kusuda]] as the spy from the Organization using his cellphone.

After the case is closed and the culprit gets arrested, Conan expresses his surprise at Benzaki not being able to recognize the thief the second time he met her, and wonders if he has bad eyesight. Amuro awkwardly evades the question by saying that he was there to buy a good-luck charm and not to see the flowers. Much to his luck, Vermouth, imitating the appearance of the woman who taped Jodie, walks towards them and answers that the good luck charm was for their baby. She pretends to have a [[wikipedia:Morning sickness|morning sickness]] in order to remove the eavesdropping device from Jodie and create an excuse for Amuro to leave the crime scene immediately. Amuro then returns the stolen purse to the real Benzaki and drives Vermouth away.

Inside the car, Amuro and Vermouth discuss about the case a little. She wonders whether he has got hold of something interesting from Jodie. Amuro states that he has learned a "surprising inside story", but won't share the details with Vermouth until he's got the proof. He only comments that Conan is a "terrifying man".

Conan suspects that the couple who approached him and Jodie was in fact Bourbon and Vermouth in disguise. While panicking, Conan realizes that the slip in Bourbon and Vermouth's story that allowed him to recognize their lie might have been intentional, so that he would realize the truth, panic, and then make a critical mistake. Conan calms down and calls Haibara to confirm whether she has felt any members of the Black Organization lately, not knowing that Amuro is watching him closely from a corner nearby.

Amuro observes Conan solving a case involving the ownership of a rare cat. He mentions to Azusa that Conan intentionally made up a fact so that he could do his test on the suspects; Conan is like a cat hiding his claws.

Later, a child saying "Zero" prompts Amuro to remember a conversation during his childhood between him and a woman who looks like [[Elena Miyano]]. {{cquote|I told you not to do that, didn't I? His colleagues attempt to corner [[Jodie]] and [[Camel]] in Raiha Pass to make sure Akai wouldn't resist capture, only to be foiled by Akai himself who has been hiding in the back seat of the car Jodie and Camel are in. It was then explored that Bourbon's real name was Rei Furuya and he is a member of Japanese secret police infiltrating the [[Black Organization]]. His colleagues in this case also come from the same agency and [[Akai]]'s and Rei's hostility come from an incident involving an unspecified man, about whom Akai says he regrets.

[[Wataru Date]] and Rei Furuya were friends in the police academy; Rei was the top ranked student, while Date held second place. While Date went on to become an officer, Rei went somewhere else and fell out of contact with Date for unknown reasons. Date's last text to Rei asked him where he was and chided Rei to communicate once in a while. Rei was shown visiting Date's grave, and likely left a toothpick out of respect for Date; Date used them habitually.

====Conan Edogawa====
Rei seems to respect [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]'s intelligence and also seems to look out for Conan as well. He wound up protecting Conan while disguised as [[Scar Akai]] at the Teito Bank, and as Rei helped Conan get out of a kidnapping situation and doctored him when Conan took a racket to the head. Before knowing he was Bourbon, Conan was generally friendly towards Rei. After the events of the Bell Tree Express, dealing with Rei hanging around has become awkward for Conan especially because he worries for Ran's safety around a member of the Black Organization.

Although his mission concerning Sherry is over, Rei has decided to investigate Conan. Rei seems to know that Conan is using Mouri Kogoro as a puppet for his deductions. He also overheard a conversation between Jodie and Conan about how Conan helped the FBI fight the Black Organization while [[Kir]] was at Haido Central Hospital.

During the Teacher Assault Case, Conan indirectly asks Rei if he is undercover in the Black Organization, whispering, "You are an enemy, right? Of the bad guys..." unaware that Rei was wearing a wire at the time, monitored by Vermouth. To throw off suspicion, Rei assures Conan in a very threatening manner that Conan was mistaken. After the Scarlet Showdown, however, Conan approaches Rei in Poirot Cafe and calls him a liar. Rei returns the favor, the two of them exchanging knowing smiles.

====Kogoro Mouri====

Rei tends to act ingratiating whenever [[Kogoro Mouri]] is around, and is especially fawning over his "Mouri-sensei". Kogoro is alternatively flattered by Rei's praise and annoyed with his effusive personality. Overall Kogoro tends to treat Rei flippantly despite being paid a handsome sum for the apprenticeship. When among members of the Black Organization, Rei doesn't speak too badly of Kogoro despite Kogoro's obvious incompetence. Rei is becoming more skilled at herding Kogoro through cases without having the older man realize that Rei is a far superior detective and is manipulating him for information.

Bourbon despises [[Shuichi Akai]] for some unknown reason and believes he is the only one capable of killing him.<ref name=703p3/> In file 897, it's strongly hinted that Rei hates Akai because of some event involving a certain "he" whom Rei knows; however, no further clarification is made.<ref>[[Volume 85]], File 897, Page 10: "Scarlet Truth" Akai: "Also, about him, I regret what happened, even now..." ''(Translation: Zenthisoror - DCTP)''</ref> Later, they forgive each other and form an alliance because they have the same targets.

[[Vermouth]] and Bourbon keep close contact with one another, and seem to be closer to one another than, say, Bourbon and Gin. Bourbon specializes in intelligence gathering, so he likely belongs to the same [[Black_Organization#Organization_structure_and_divisions|reconnaissance division of the Black Organization]] as Vermouth. While it is still uncertain whether Bourbon is working directly under Vermouth, she seems to keep track of his actions during his missions at times,<ref>[[Detectives' Nocturne]]</ref> and he also often informs her about his discoveries or his future plans.<ref>[[Volume 78|File 818]] (Bourbon was said to have told Vermouth about Sherry's video); [[Volume 78|File 827]] (Bourbon tells Vermouth that he is now interested in "Sleeping Kogoro")</ref> Vermouth helped Bourbon create a [[Scar Akai|disguise]] that looked like Akai so he can investigate his enemy's death. Later, she somehow helped him approach [[Kogoro]] because he suspected that the detective was in contact with [[Sherry]]. Bourbon made an unknown promise to Vermouth (possibly being to not harm Conan), and she calls to ask him if he will be upholding it after the car chase in [[Detectives' Nocturne]]. 

The two have shown to be working together, not unlike Gin and Vodka, though the bond and trust between them are somewhat lacking. In addition to Bourbon's promise to Vermouth, he is also aware of her secret relationship to the Boss/Anokata, as noted at the end of the Scarlet Showdown. Bourbon utilizes this information to enlist Vermouth's assistance in his investigations, arranging for her secret to be released to the other members of the Organization should she kill him in an attempt to seal his mouth shut.

==== Elena Miyano ====
Rei was probably close with [[Elena Miyano]] as a child before she died. Elena would doctor Rei after he got into fights. She is also aware of his true name, calling him "Rei-kun."

====Gin====
[[Gin]] dislikes Bourbon's personality and finds him annoying for being secretive and always doing what he pleases. At the same time, Gin respects Bourbon's detective abilities. The two do not seem to be in contact with one another, as Gin has no idea what Bourbon is doing.

====Akemi Miyano====
[[Akemi Miyano]] and Rei seem to have met at some point because Akemi told Shiho that Bourbon has a rivalry with Akai. 

====Shiho Miyano====
Rei doesn't seem to have any hostility towards [[Shiho Miyano|Shiho]] unlike other Black Organization members. He attempted to capture the person he thought was her alive instead of trying to kill her, regretting he might have to resort to violence to do so. Rei says he had met Elena and Atsushi Miyano while they were alive. Rei does not know Shiho is [[Ai Haibara|Ai]]. During a car chase in [[Detectives' Nocturne‎]], Shiho gets a strong feeling that member of the Black Organization was behind her, but she doesn't seem to pinpoint it to Rei's pursuing [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Mazda_RX-7_2|Mazda FD RX-7]].

====Masumi Sera====
Rei first meets [[Masumi Sera|Sera]] when Conan gets kidnapped. After both of them save Conan, he becomes very surprised to see her and wonders why is she here. Next day, he does not have any work. Rei sees Sera again after the previous case, and notices that she looks similiar to Shuichi Akai. To confirm his theory, Rei once again disguised himself as [[Scar Akai]] to gauge her reaction. Suddenly, Sera sees him in the crowd ahead and just like Jodie and Camel before her, Sera becomes just as shocked by his appearance. She runs after him, but he disappears before she can catch him. Ran wonders who Sera was chasing, but Sera replies she thought it was someone she knew. Sera silently appends in her mind that it would be impossible for the man she was chasing to be the person she thinks it was. While Rei watches her from a little ahead, confirming his suspicion that Sera is related to Akai.

==Speculation==
Gin has revealed that Bourbon is as secretive as Vermouth. Bourbon has shown a friendly relationship with Vermouth but not with other members so far. Bourbon even hid some details from Conan. It is possible that Bourbon, as well as Kir, is a member who doesn´t like the Organization. Date himself revealed that Bourbon was the best man at the police academy, and that Bourbon was a gentleman like Takagi, too. Besides, at the end of Takagi´s Kidnapping Case, Bourbon refers to Date as "my friend", which means he had no option but to cut all means of contact with him for his own safety.

==Background==
Rei's past within the [[Black Organization]] is unknown, but it seems he has been tied to them for a while. He knew [[Shiho Miyano]]'s parents who died when Shiho was young suggesting that he has some involvement since he was a teenager.<ref name=824p5>Manga Volume 78, File 7 (824), Page 5: "Mystery Train: Final Destination"</ref> He was the rival of [[Shuichi Akai]] (alias Dai Moroboshi) who was [[Akemi Miyano|Akemi]]'s lover at the time.<ref name=824p5/> He had suspected Dai Moroboshi was a spy for the FBI which turned out to be the case.<ref name=824p5/>

Soon after Shuichi Akai's death, [[Hidemi Hondou|Kir]] called [[Jodie Starling]] to report that a new member of the Black Organization called Bourbon had been dispatched. Kir said that Bourbon's target was the escaped scientist Shiho Miyano and that Bourbon has excellent information gathering skills and keen insight.<ref name=622p4>Manga Volume 60, File 3, Page 4: "Red, White and Yellow"</ref> Later Tooru Amuro appears as a free-lance private detective who also maintains employment on the side that may aid in investigation, like his part-time job as a waiter at Ristorante Sundayrino. Rei has a cheerful personality. He is also generous, bringing a plate of sandwiches for the detective agency bought with his money. In more serious situations, he seems to be patient, keeping calm even while others are abusing him. Although somewhat of a "cool type", he does not hide his emotions and is quite expressive. Like other detectives in ''[[Detective Conan]]'', he enjoys presenting his deductions about cases to others. Kogoro calls him "effeminate".

Rei has a darker side. He is manipulative, tricking others into performing certain actions so he can gather information. He favors using psychological traps and catching his enemies offguard. Rei can also be extremely cruel in the pursuit of goals. He planned to run over and hospitalize an elementary school teacher with his car in order to lure out FBI agents, and he would have allowed a suspect destroy his exonerating evidence in order to test Kogoro. Rei alternates between going out of his way to care about the wellbeing others and ignoring them when it is inconvenient. As Scar Akai, he saved Conan at the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|Teito bank heist]], but neglected to inform Ran and Kogoro later when he noticed that Conan might have been kidnapped by a murderer in [[Detectives' Nocturne]].

He has dark skin, lighter than, but closer to [[Heiji Hattori|Heiji]]'s color and has dyed blond hair. He wears glasses at first, but it is unknown if he actually needs them because he was using them to conceal his identity at the time and takes them off midway through the case and has not had them on since. Unlike other Black Organization members, he dresses mostly casually and sometimes wears outfits with only a little black. This may be because he is undercover and is trying to blend in.

Bourbon's primary mission was to search for the escaped scientist [[Shiho Miyano]], which the [[CIA]] spy [[Kir]] heard about and informed the [[FBI]] of. He also had a second secret mission fueled by his hunch that his archenemy Shuichi Akai should not have died so easily;<ref name=703p3>Manga [[Volume 67]], File 7, page 3: "The Truth Amidst the Snowstorm"</ref> he received [[Anokata|the boss's]] permission to verify Akai's death. He approached the FBI as [[Scar Akai|an Akai lookalike]] by using [[Vermouth]]'s disguise help hoping to see if Akai was truly dead.<ref name=824p7>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 7 (824), pg 7: "Final Destination"</ref> He later apprenticed himself to [[Kogoro Mouri]] because Bourbon suspected the detective may be connected to Sherry.<ref name=827p16>Manga [[Volume 78]], File 10 (827), pg 16: "The key to solving the mystery"</ref> (Kogoro was previously suspected of being linked to Sherry because the [[Criminal Tracking Glasses|tracker]], [[microphone]], and gum combo Gin found on Kir's shoe after [[Black Impact! In this disguise, he approached the close friends of Shuichi Akai to gauge whether he was truly dead. Bourbon first used the disguise to approach [[Jodie Starling]] at [[Teito Bank]], then [[Andre Camel]] at [[Beika Department Store]], he also sends Kogoro a text message on his deduction of the current case using a borrowed phone from a bystander. Whether he did this out of concern for the hostages or his own well being is unknown.

Rei (under the alias Tooru Amuro) is hired by to-be-bride Hatsune Kamon to investigate whether her to-be-husband, Raita Banba, is cheating on her. As part of the investigation, Rei tells Kamon to have their pre-wedding celebration at the restaurant, Ristorante Sundayrino, where he works as a waiter. He purposefully drops some cake on Banba's pants trying to make Banba too embarrassed to approach women later. Banba complains about Amuro's "mistake", but Kamon tells Amuro it's alright to protect him. Banba later gets drunk, and Amuro has to point out his phone is ringing. [[File:Amuro_abuse.jpg|thumb|left|220px|Amuro gets knocked over by a case suspect]]Banba goes to the bathroom to meet the person who called him, the detective Sanji Haruka, who Banba hired to find out if Kamon was cheating on him. Sanji had been following the wife and discovered her meeting with Amuro, so Sanji mistakenly reports Kamon is having an affair with Amuro. Sanji confirms Amuro has a matching voice by asking Amuro to repeat his order, a bourbon on the rocks.

Banba is furious at Amuro and begins to harass him; like shouldering him and knocking Amuro over in front of the other waiters. Later Kamon dies in a car fire that is ruled an arson, and Banba accuses Amuro of starting it because he is Kamon's lover. Amuro denies this and says that Banba may have been trying to disguise wounds he received while fighting with Kamon by tripping Amuro. Amuro then takes off his glasses and reveals himself to be a private detective hired by Kamon, not her lover.

After Amuro correctly gives his deduction that Sanji was a detective hired by Banba, Kogoro accuses Amuro of driving Kamon to suicide by telling her about her husband's shameless flirting, but Amuro denies contacting Kamon by phone. Amuro accuses Banba of being the murderer, which antagonizes Banba into to rushing him. Amuro dodges and trips Banba and asks Kogoro to hold Banba's legs. From the condition of the bottom of Banba's shoes and Amuro's detailed background investigation of Banba and Kamon, [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] is able to deduce that Kamon's death was really a suicide. Amuro continues to accuse Banba after more DNA evidence comes in, but Conan prevents his arrest by using [[Kogoro#Detective_Skills|Sleeping Kogoro]] to ask Banba a critical question that reveals he never stepped outside. Amuro challenges Kogoro's deduction, suggesting that maybe Banba used a [[Shuichi Akai|knit cap]] and [[Scar Akai|long windbreaker]] to disguise himself, but Sleeping Kogoro counters by pointing out the condition of Banba's shoes. Defeated, Amuro demands Kogoro explain the matching DNA, which he does, revealing that Kamon and Banba are identical twins, but Kamon had a chromosomal abnormality that resulted in her being phenotypically female. Humbled, Amuro explains the abnormality condition to those present which [[Juzo Megure|Inspector Megure]] confirms.

One day later, Amuro has started work as a waiter at [[Setting#Cafe_Poirot|Café Poirot]] below [[Setting#The_Mouri_Detective_Agency|Mouri Detective Agency]]. He asks Kogoro if he can be Kogoro's apprentice and whispers some unheard amount of money per case that he is will pay if Kogoro brings Amuro along with him. The amount thrills Kogoro into accepting Amuro's offer immediately. Conan mentally moans about how yet another bothersome person has appeared.

While Kogoro and the gang are watching a news report on a recent bank robbery, Amuro stops by with sandwiches from the Poirot after finishing his part time job for the day. After commenting on the robbery, Amuro reveals that he wants the scoop on Kogoro's newest case request after deducing from Kogoro's appearance and habits that Kogoro had a case. Kogoro gets a text from the client requesting that Kogoro switch the meeting location to the [[Setting#Cafe_Columbo|Café Columbo]], and Amuro goes with them after changing out of his work clothes. At the Columbo, Kogoro explains to Amuro the request was to find the locker a key belongs to. The client fails to show, so Amuro, Kogoro, Conan, and Ran go back to the Detective Agency to make sure the client didn't actually turn up there instead. When Amuro arrives at the agency, he and Conan notice someone had broken in and appeared to have intercepted the client while they were out. Stepping outside, Amuro explains his deductions to the rest of the gang and that the culprit is hiding in the restroom. [[File:Amuro796.jpg|thumb|left|220px|Amuro and Conan heard the gunshot]] Before Amuro can open the bathroom door, a gunshot rings out, and Conan rushes in to find a dead man who apparently committed suicide with a gun and a taped-up crying woman. The woman's story is that the now-dead guy was interrogating her about the key and locker and committed suicide when Kogoro returned early, but Amuro and Conan suspect she is lying and may have murdered the man.

Amuro questions the woman a little, and Megure comments to Kogoro about he has yet another detective hanging around him. Curious, Amuro asks about [[Masumi Sera|the other detective]] and hears she is a young girl. Amuro offers to drive the formerly tied up woman to her home after questioning was postponed until the next day. Conan, Ran and Kogoro come along for the ride. At the woman's house, Conan, Amuro, and Kogoro announce they need to use the restroom and go inside. Ran turns on her cellphone and immediately gets a call from Sera, who was worried after seeing the news of the murder. The call is full of static, and Amuro suddenly shuts Ran's phone and announces the place is bugged, which is interfering with the cellphone signal. Amuro gets out a bug detector and begins sweeping the house.
Ran, Amuro, and Kogoro find several bugs before coming across a large suitcase under a bed that is emitting a horrible smell. They opened the bugged suitcase and find a corpse inside.

Soon afterwards, it was revealed that the culprit was indeed the woman, who sent Kogoro a message claiming that she was having Conan in her hands. During the investigation, they have found out a video recording summary, which contains many news about the robbery, inside the TV. Amuro then quickly gave out the speculation that the apartment might actually belonged to one of the robbers instead. Ran didn't understand how a detective of such level of intelligence could willingly become her father's apprentice. However, Amuro modestly answered that Kogoro was just testing him, and that he still had got much to learn.

Later, they decided to check up the house's computer, which was protected with password. Amuro discovered that the password was hidden under the desk, but instead of revealing the fact directly, he chose to hint Kogoro and Ran about it. After having gained access to the computer,
they have all found out the identity of the third robber and her location, where Conan's kidnapper would most likely pay a visit. They followed the address and drive to that place, Sera approached them closely from behind. However, while still on the road, they suddenly learned that the third robber had been overwhelming both Conan and the killer, and they were in serious danger. Right after determining the exact car that those three were in, Amuro purposely crashed his own car into theirs in order to stop it. In the end, the robber was defeated by Sera, Conan was safe. Amuro, Sera, Okiya (who was driving Agasa and Haibara to the scene) were all shown to receive a mysterious call. Vermouth called Bourbon and commented that he had gained some trust<ref>It wasn't specified whose trust</ref> and that she expected him to keep his (unstated) promise to her.

Because he had crashed his car into the car of the woman who kidnapped Conan, he was called to come there and finish some procedures so the police could determine whether his action had been overkill. He expresses his disappointment at not being able to meet [[Professor Agasa]] with them. He also states that he had another purpose for coming to the station, but when asked by Conan what it is, Amuro claims that it "has already disappeared".

Later, when [[Wataru Takagi|Takagi]] is still trapped, he reminisces of a time with his mentor [[Wataru Date]] and he said that Date was the top student at the police academy. However, Date rebutted this and told Takagi that he had always been number 2. He also said that neither his brains nor his brawn was anything compared to that guy who was like a gentleman. Later, it's revealed that the person whom Date was talking about is Amuro. He leaves a toothpick by Date's grave and watches Takagi and Sato pay their respects. Before leaving, he deletes a text message that Date sent him, while thinking "Rest in peace, my friend..."

Ran and Kogoro are being served by Amuro at the Poirot. Presumably in reponse to being asked about Conan's absence, Kogoro tells Amuro that Conan and the [[Detective Boys]] went camping in Gunma, and they will be sending pictures to Kogoro's computer later. When Sera calls Ran to ask about [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Volkswagen_Beetle|what sort of vehicle Agasa drives]], Amuro listens suspiciously. Late that night, Amuro furtively sneaks into the empty Mouri Detective Agency and logs onto Kogoro's website using the password Kogoro inadvertently told him [[Tooru_Amuro#Murder_at_Mouri_Detective_Agency_.28Manga:_796-800.29|in an earlier case]]. Instead of pictures from the Detective Boys' camping trip that he was expecting, he sees a video sent by someone (Mitsuhiko) that shows [[Shiho Miyano]] rescuing [[Ayumi]] from a cabin fire. He is shocked, and then he zooms in on her hand and notices she is wearing a pass ring for the Bell Tree Express mystery train. Amuro then notices that Kogoro's computer was being hacked [[Subaru Okiya|by someone]] and wonders who did it. Amuro passes over the information that Shiho appeared in Gunma and will be boarding the mystery train to Vermouth who will relay it to Gin.

Amuro appears on the train where he runs into Ran and the others. When asked what he is doing there, Amuro claims he won his tickets in an online auction and that he coincidentally met Kogoro in the dining cart where he learned of the case. When Masumi Sera runs off to find Scar Akai (Vermouth), Amuro is seen with his phone out contacting Vermouth that she was heading her way. He then comes when Conan (through Kogoro) starts his deduction on the murder culprit and reveals that three mirror plates were stuffed in a painting which was used for the locked room murder trick.

However, after the culprit confesses, Vermouth activated smoke canisters throughout the train in order to lure Ai Haibara (who supposedly transformed back to Shiho Miyano) out. After that is successful, Amuro introduces himself to her by calling himself Bourbon. He goes on to ask Shiho if she knows who he is to which she claims that he was a rival to her sister's love Dai Moroboshi (Shuichi Akai). Amuro starts to gloat saying that he knew Akai was FBI and that he couldn't believe that he was killed. He then says he decided to disguise as Akai in front of those close to him, although he asked Vermouth to disguise as him on the train. From that, he could only conclude that Akai really died. Putting Shiho at gunpoint, he tells her to go into the eighth cart so he can detach it with C4 explosives and bring her back to the organization. However, Shiho reveals that there are more C4 explosives in the train, when Amuro realizes that Vermouth put them there and that she plans to have Sherry killed. However, before he can do anything else, the real Akai (whom Amuro mistook as Vermouth) comes behind him and throws a grenade to detach the eighth cart. Amuro dodges the explosive relatively unscathed and the eighth cart explodes, but Shiho (who was really Kaitou Kid in disguise) is able to escape. Amuro then regroups with Vermouth and asks her to give him the files on before and after Akai's death. He thinks to himself that he'll have to start from square one, while Okiya, who is revealed to be Shuichi Akai watches on silently.

After the events of the Bell Tree express, Amuro went on sick leave which Conan took as a sign that he wasn't planning to return. However, to Conan's horror, Amuro had asked Kogoro if he and Sonoko wanted tennis lessons. He meets them at a tennis court and reveals he will be coming back to work at the Poirot next week. When a tennis racket accidentally slips from a player's hand, Amuro tries to warn Conan that it will hit him, but Conan is unable to dodge it in time. Conan is knocked unconscious, and Amuro rushes over and does everything to make sure Conan is assisted medically before a real doctor arrives to check Conan's condition. When Conan awakens, he finds out he was moved to the house of the person who hit him with the racket. After an apology, the group asks if Amuro, Sonoko, and the Mouris would like to play doubles tennis with them. Conan goes off to take a nap, but a loud noise wakes him up, and he discovers one of the players has been murdered and the body is locked in the room with him. Worried about the noise, Amuro picks the room's lock and tries to open the door, but Conan yells at him to stop as there is a beaten body next to it. When the police come to investigate, Amuro helps in the investigation. As Conan prepares to tranquilize Kogoro, Amuro, starting to get suspicious, bends down to examine Conan aiming his watch, which prevents Conan from using it. Conan is instead forced to give out hints to lead Kogoro and the police to the right answer. After the case is over, Amuro and Vermouth have a phone conversation. Vermouth asks why Amuro is still sticking around the Mouri Detective Agency when there is no need to because Sherry has been dealt with, and Amuro responds that he is interested by ''Sleeping Kogoro''. As he says this, he thinks of Conan instead, implying he suspects Conan is the real Sleeping Kogoro.

The Detective Boys become trapped in a refrigerated delivery truck with a cat, a dead body, and two murderous workers. Unable to call for help and out of other options, Conan decides to try to get a message to Amuro using the cat and a doctored receipt. The receipt initially blew away, but after realizing it was from Conan, Amuro tracks it down using a specialized app on his phone that can simulate wind conditions between the buildings in Beika city. Amuro locates the delivery truck in his repaired [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Amuro.27s_Mazda_RX-7|Mazda RX-7]]. The Black Organization agent decides to pretend like he came by chance instead of decoding the message on the receipt, and asks the two delivery men to make way because the street is narrow. When the kids see him and cry for help, Amuro, playing dumb, asks why they are in that truck. One of the murderers then orders Amuro to get in the truck by threatening the safety of the children. Amuro immediately punches the man's chest so hard that he coughs up blood. The remaining kidnapper backs down and Amuro ties him up and tells Conan to call the police. The children then reveal that they are outside of Agasa's house, which Amuro takes interest in. Haibara manages to stay behind the other kids and goes unnoticed by Amuro, and Okiya watches the unfolding scene from Shinichi's house's window.

===A Shrine to Remember (Manga: [[Volume 80|850]]-[[Volume 81|852]], Anime: [[Jodie's Memories and the Cherry Blossom Viewing Trap|734]])===
Suspecting that they may hold more valuable information for his investigation, Amuro follows Conan and Jodie to a sakura viewing scenic spot and attempts to approach them using someone else's appearance. He, with Vermouth's assistance, impersonates a random man named [[List of Black Organization related characters|Touhei Benzaki]], after having knocked him unconscious. Unknowing to Amuro, the real Benzaki has just been pickpocketed by a female thief.

In front of Conan and Jodie, Amuro claims to be the husband of the woman who taped Jodie back in the [[Detective Boys vs. Robber Group|bank robbery case]], where he was also one of the victims himself. He also says that he saw [[Scar Akai]] a few days back, to which both of them react strongly. Jodie immediately grabs Amuro's arm and questions him where did that happen, while he takes advantage of the chance and secretly plants an eavesdropping device inside the sleeve of her jacket. Suddenly, the female thief approaches them in an attempt to steal Jodie's money. She recognizes Benzaki's face and worries that he may figure out about her action, but Amuro pays no further attention to her. After that, he declares not remembering the place that he saw Scar Akai due to his cold; and during a conversation with Jodie, Amuro learns that [[Shuichi Akai]] likes drinking canned coffee and has dropped one back when the Organization was trying to [[Clash of Red and Black|attack]] Haido Central Hospital. Jodie also implies that she knows Scar Akai and the real Akai are not the same person. She hands to Amuro her phone number and asks him to contact her if he happens to recall anything.

Later, the female thief is murdered by one of her victims and Amuro (as Touhei Benzaki) unwillingly becomes one of the suspects. Through the eavesdropping device planted earlier, Amuro is able to listen to Jodie's conversations with Conan, where she mentions how Conan assisted the FBI in unmasking [[Rikumichi Kusuda]] as the spy from the Organization using his cellphone.

After the case is closed and the culprit gets arrested, Conan expresses his surprise at Benzaki not being able to recognize the thief the second time he met her, and wonders if he has bad eyesight. Amuro awkwardly evades the question by saying that he was there to buy a good-luck charm and not to see the flowers. Much to his luck, Vermouth, imitating the appearance of the woman who taped Jodie, walks towards them and answers that the good luck charm was for their baby. She pretends to have a [[wikipedia:Morning sickness|morning sickness]] in order to remove the eavesdropping device from Jodie and create an excuse for Amuro to leave the crime scene immediately. Amuro then returns the stolen purse to the real Benzaki and drives Vermouth away.

Inside the car, Amuro and Vermouth discuss about the case a little. She wonders whether he has got hold of something interesting from Jodie. Amuro states that he has learned a "surprising inside story", but won't share the details with Vermouth until he's got the proof. He only comments that Conan is a "terrifying man".

===Steamy Relations (Manga: [[Volume 81|856]], Anime: [[Bathroom Where Ran Collapsed As Well|740]])===

While panicking, Conan realizes that the slip in Bourbon and Vermouth's story that allowed him to recognize their lie might have been intentional, so that he would realize the truth, panic, and then make a critical mistake. Conan calms down and calls Haibara to confirm whether she has felt any members of the Black Organization lately, not knowing that Amuro is watching him closely from a corner nearby.

Amuro observes Conan solving a case involving the ownership of a rare cat. He mentions to Azusa that Conan intentionally made up a fact so that he could do his test on the suspects; Conan is like a cat hiding his claws.

Later, a child saying "Zero" prompts Amuro to remember a conversation during his childhood between him and a woman who looks like [[Elena Miyano]]. {{cquote|I told you not to do that, didn't I? His colleagues attempt to corner [[Jodie]] and [[Camel]] in Raiha Pass to make sure Akai wouldn't resist capture, only to be foiled by Akai himself who has been hiding in the back seat of the car Jodie and Camel are in. It was then explored that Bourbon's real name was Rei Furuya and he is a member of Japanese secret police infiltrating the [[Black Organization]]. His colleagues in this case also come from the same agency and [[Akai]]'s and Rei's hostility come from an incident involving an unspecified man, about whom Akai says he regrets.

While Date went on to become an officer, Rei went somewhere else and fell out of contact with Date for unknown reasons. Date's last text to Rei asked him where he was and chided Rei to communicate once in a while. Rei was shown visiting Date's grave, and likely left a toothpick out of respect for Date; Date used them habitually.

====Conan Edogawa====
Rei seems to respect [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]]'s intelligence and also seems to look out for Conan as well. He wound up protecting Conan while disguised as [[Scar Akai]] at the Teito Bank, and as Rei helped Conan get out of a kidnapping situation and doctored him when Conan took a racket to the head. Before knowing he was Bourbon, Conan was generally friendly towards Rei. After the events of the Bell Tree Express, dealing with Rei hanging around has become awkward for Conan especially because he worries for Ran's safety around a member of the Black Organization.

Although his mission concerning Sherry is over, Rei has decided to investigate Conan. Rei seems to know that Conan is using Mouri Kogoro as a puppet for his deductions. He also overheard a conversation between Jodie and Conan about how Conan helped the FBI fight the Black Organization while [[Kir]] was at Haido Central Hospital.

During the Teacher Assault Case, Conan indirectly asks Rei if he is undercover in the Black Organization, whispering, "You are an enemy, right? Of the bad guys..." unaware that Rei was wearing a wire at the time, monitored by Vermouth. To throw off suspicion, Rei assures Conan in a very threatening manner that Conan was mistaken. After the Scarlet Showdown, however, Conan approaches Rei in Poirot Cafe and calls him a liar. Rei returns the favor, the two of them exchanging knowing smiles.

Rei tends to act ingratiating whenever [[Kogoro Mouri]] is around, and is especially fawning over his "Mouri-sensei". Kogoro is alternatively flattered by Rei's praise and annoyed with his effusive personality. Overall Kogoro tends to treat Rei flippantly despite being paid a handsome sum for the apprenticeship. When among members of the Black Organization, Rei doesn't speak too badly of Kogoro despite Kogoro's obvious incompetence. Rei is becoming more skilled at herding Kogoro through cases without having the older man realize that Rei is a far superior detective and is manipulating him for information.

While it is still uncertain whether Bourbon is working directly under Vermouth, she seems to keep track of his actions during his missions at times,<ref>[[Detectives' Nocturne]]</ref> and he also often informs her about his discoveries or his future plans.<ref>[[Volume 78|File 818]] (Bourbon was said to have told Vermouth about Sherry's video); [[Volume 78|File 827]] (Bourbon tells Vermouth that he is now interested in "Sleeping Kogoro")</ref> Vermouth helped Bourbon create a [[Scar Akai|disguise]] that looked like Akai so he can investigate his enemy's death. Later, she somehow helped him approach [[Kogoro]] because he suspected that the detective was in contact with [[Sherry]]. Bourbon made an unknown promise to Vermouth (possibly being to not harm Conan), and she calls to ask him if he will be upholding it after the car chase in [[Detectives' Nocturne]]. 

The two have shown to be working together, not unlike Gin and Vodka, though the bond and trust between them are somewhat lacking. In addition to Bourbon's promise to Vermouth, he is also aware of her secret relationship to the Boss/Anokata, as noted at the end of the Scarlet Showdown. Bourbon utilizes this information to enlist Vermouth's assistance in his investigations, arranging for her secret to be released to the other members of the Organization should she kill him in an attempt to seal his mouth shut.

Rei was probably close with [[Elena Miyano]] as a child before she died. Elena would doctor Rei after he got into fights. She is also aware of his true name, calling him "Rei-kun."

====Gin====
[[Gin]] dislikes Bourbon's personality and finds him annoying for being secretive and always doing what he pleases. At the same time, Gin respects Bourbon's detective abilities. The two do not seem to be in contact with one another, as Gin has no idea what Bourbon is doing.

====Akemi Miyano====
[[Akemi Miyano]] and Rei seem to have met at some point because Akemi told Shiho that Bourbon has a rivalry with Akai. 

====Shiho Miyano====
Rei doesn't seem to have any hostility towards [[Shiho Miyano|Shiho]] unlike other Black Organization members. He attempted to capture the person he thought was her alive instead of trying to kill her, regretting he might have to resort to violence to do so. Rei says he had met Elena and Atsushi Miyano while they were alive. Rei does not know Shiho is [[Ai Haibara|Ai]]. During a car chase in [[Detectives' Nocturne‎]], Shiho gets a strong feeling that member of the Black Organization was behind her, but she doesn't seem to pinpoint it to Rei's pursuing [[Vehicles_in_Detective_Conan#Mazda_RX-7_2|Mazda FD RX-7]].

Rei first meets [[Masumi Sera|Sera]] when Conan gets kidnapped. After both of them save Conan, he becomes very surprised to see her and wonders why is she here. Next day, he does not have any work. Rei sees Sera again after the previous case, and notices that she looks similiar to Shuichi Akai. To confirm his theory, Rei once again disguised himself as [[Scar Akai]] to gauge her reaction. Suddenly, Sera sees him in the crowd ahead and just like Jodie and Camel before her, Sera becomes just as shocked by his appearance. She runs after him, but he disappears before she can catch him. Ran wonders who Sera was chasing, but Sera replies she thought it was someone she knew. Sera silently appends in her mind that it would be impossible for the man she was chasing to be the person she thinks it was. While Rei watches her from a little ahead, confirming his suspicion that Sera is related to Akai.

==Speculation==
Gin has revealed that Bourbon is as secretive as Vermouth. Bourbon has shown a friendly relationship with Vermouth but not with other members so far. Bourbon even hid some details from Conan. It is possible that Bourbon, as well as Kir, is a member who doesn´t like the Organization. Date himself revealed that Bourbon was the best man at the police academy, and that Bourbon was a gentleman like Takagi, too. Besides, at the end of Takagi´s Kidnapping Case, Bourbon refers to Date as "my friend", which means he had no option but to cut all means of contact with him for his own safety.

The Magic Kaito Organization has been shown to have at least four distinct ranks. The highest is the unmentioned boss, referred to with deference by lower level members as "that person". So far the the only known goal of the Magic Kaito Organization is to find [[Pandora Gem|Pandora]], the gem which grants eternal life to the one who drinks its tears when Volley comet passes over. It is unknown what the Magic Kaito Organization intends to do with Pandora, or whether finding Pandora is their only goal rather than one facet of a larger plan.

The Magic Kaito Organization steals "big jewels" they think might be Pandora and return them to the sub-boss to be checked against the light of the moon. For some missions, the group acts in large numbers with a codenamed agent like Snake leading a group of many minor operatives. Other times codenamed agents work together without backup, as Snake and Rose were shown to do. Except for the sub-boss, all codenamed agents and their lackeys are shown to be armed at all times. So far, they do not seem to be concerned with silencers.

The Magic Kaito Organization is clearly very rich, shown by them using an expansive traditional Japanese home with escape tunnel as a hideout.

So far the Magic Kaito Organization has only targeted jewels of superlative size, typically the most massive in a particular category. Presumably they figure that the gem must be exceptionally large in order to hide the doublet Pandora within it.

Both [[Kaito Kuroba]] and the Magic Kaito Organization decide to target the Blue Birthday sapphire. Snake waits for Kaitou Kid on a roof and confronts the thief who he believes to be [[Toichi Kuroba]]. Snake reveals himself to be the one who killed Toichi Kuroba eight years before the events of Magic Kaito, making the death look like a stage accident.

Snake shoots Kid and takes possession of what he thinks is the Blue Birthday, but Kid survived thanks to putting the real Blue Birthday gem in his breast pocket. Snake goes to an old-fashioned mansion on the edge of the city, where a mysterious balding man with a mustache praises Snake's work, saying "This jewel could be the one ''he'' is searching for." The man then went on to explain what the Pandora Gem is: a jewel hidden within a larger jewel that can be identified because it glows red under the moonlight and will, at the time of a comet, "cry tears of immortality". Kaitou Kid continues to look for the Pandora gem, this time pursuing the blue ruby known as the "Red Tear," owned by a family of British magicians known as the Hoppers. Kaito suspects that Snake believes the gem has a good chance of being the Pandora Gem. However, since Kaito's father Toichi was trained by James Hopper, grandfather of the current magician Jody Hopper, Kaito knew that the gem was actually a sort of photo album which, when illuminated, projected images of the Hopper family onto the walls.

When Snake arrived to steal the Red Tear, he had one of his men dress as the Kaitou Kid while he himself went backstage and non-fatally shot many in the magician troupe in an attempt to get Jody to turn the gem over to him. He was about to shoot Jody but Kaito saved her life, then led Snake on a chase which ended in the latter falling out a window. Snake landed safely on an adjacent roof and presumably fled.

==Relation to the Black Organization from Detective Conan==
It is unknown if the [[Magic Kaito]]'s unnamed organization and Detective Conan's [[Black Organization]] are the same organization, partners, or entirely unrelated to one another. Theories for or against their connection have been presented by fans.

Subaru Okiya is a graduate student attending Tohto University to earn a doctorate degree in engineering. He originally lived at a boarding house, where the landlord's son nicknamed him "Red Man," after a firetruck, because he frequently saw him watering the plants. After the boarding house burned down in the [[Red, White, Yellow, and the Detective Boys|Red, White, and Yellow Arson Case]], [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] suggested he move into [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]]'s house, explaining to Agasa and [[Ai Haibara|Haibara]] that someone living in the house would help to hide his (Shinichi's) disappearance. Okiya is generally shown to be quiet and reserved, often seeming unfazed by normally stressful situations, such as when Ran attacked him while he was brushing his teeth, believing he had broken into Shinichi's house<ref>Manga [[Volume 61]] File 8: Paper Airplane</ref>, or when a murderer grabbed Ayumi as a hostage.<ref name=Speech>Manga [[Volume 64]] File 3: Thirst for Blood</ref> He often tends to behave in a friendly and modest manner, smiling and rubbing the back of his head whenever someone compliments him or says anything about him. He enjoys cooking and seems ready and willing to help with various tasks. He doesn't mind interacting with the [[Detective Boys]], is always polite to them, and listens to their theories during cases. He is often shown drinking bourbon whiskey.

Okiya becomes more serious while working on cases and enjoys revealing the truth to others similar to Conan. Sometimes he speaks mysteriously, leaving the meaning and intentions of what he said open to interpretation. Okiya has a more menacing side seen whenever he takes to the offensive or is intently focusing on something. In this frame of mind, Okiya triggers Haibara's Black Organization sense.

== Plot overview ==
===Red, white, and yellow arson case (Manga: [[Volume 60#Red, White, and Yellow Case|622-624]], Anime: [[Red, White, Yellow, and the Detective Boys|509]]-[[Conan vs. Double Code Mystery|510]])===

After school, [[Conan Edogawa|Conan]] receives a phone call from [[Jodie Starling|Jodie]] who tells him that the Black Organization has activated a new member codenamed [[Tooru Amuro|Bourbon]]. Meanwhile, the [[Detective Boys]] receive a request from their classmate, Kaito Suigiura, to investigate the actions of a strange man at his father's apartment building which is close to [[Shinichi Kudo|Shinichi]] and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]]'s house.<ref>Based on the Japanese address system, the houses are very close. Okiya's previous apartment was at Beika city district 2 #23A. Agasa's address is Beika city district 2 #22. Shinichi's house address is Beika city district 2 21B. Basically, Okiya's apartment is going to be across in the adjacent block of houses across a little street. The Okiya's apt isn't marked on [http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/images/8/8d/Conandrillmap.jpg the map of Beika city], but it should be on the same chunk of buildings that Shinichi's and Agasa's house are (i.e. not separated by a major road as that would change the city district number i.e Mouri agency is city district 5).</ref> The next day the Detective Boys find that the apartment has been burned down. Subaru Okiya first appeared as one of the suspects in this arson case. When [[Inspector Yuminaga]] introduces the detective boys to the suspects, Okiya gives [[Ai Haibara]] the chills which she only gets from those who have been in the Black Organization, although she isn't sure who is responsible at the time and the feeling of pressure unexpectedly disappears.

The revelation that Kaito Suigiura's diary describes a suspicious "yellow" tenant who had argued with the landlord the night the apartment was burnt down leads to the police to question the three suspects about their alibis at the time of the arson as well as their favorite color. Subaru Okiya's alibi was that he was driving alone that night long the verdant Teimuzu river to clear his head after submitting a paper to his professor. Although he likes the greenery of plants, Okiya declared that his favorite is black, "because it covers things inside me that I don't want known", although he hates the color for the same reason.

Conan and Subaru Okiya seem to hit it off when Okiya recognizes Conan quote a line from Sir AC Doyle's "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches". After Conan solves the case, Okiya asks to meet Professor Agasa. After introducing himself, Okiya asks Professor Agasa if he could stay for at his house until he finds another place to live, offering to help Agasa with his research in the spare time. Agasa consents, as long as Haibara also agrees, but Haibara strongly refuses. Conan chimes in offering Shinichi's house, saying that Shinichi has gone missing all of a sudden and Conan will tell Shinichi later that Okiya moved in. Conan overrules Haibara's concerns that the Org may find out through Okiya that Shinichi is still alive by simply saying, "A Holmes fan can't be a bad person!" Conan gives Okiya the key along with the request to take care of the place while he (Shinichi) is gone and Okiya agrees.

===Sports Car Arson Case (Manga: [[Volume 61#Sports Car Arson Case|635-637]], Anime: [[The Blue Spark of Hate|524-525]])===
Conan and Agasa are quick to view Okiya as a resource, seen in the Rolls Royce explosion case where Agasa suggests calling Okiya to bring gasoline when his beetle runs out in a remote location, and later in the same case where Conan secretly asks for his help to set up a trap to trick the culprit into confessing. Okiya secretly watches Conan's plan to trick the culprit into confessing in action.

===Paper airplane case (Manga: [[Volume 61#Paper Airplane Case|638-640]], Anime: [[Conan vs. Double Code Mystery|510]]-[[Deduction Showdown! Shinichi vs. Subaru Okiya|511]])===

Ran and Sonoko visit Shinichi's house to clean up unaware that Okiya is living there, and they confront him thinking he is a thief. Okiya fails to explain fast enough and winds up on the receiving end of Ran's karate kick. Conan calls Ran to explain that Okiya has been living in the house after the fire and warns her not to talk about Shinichi in front of him. After the two girls apologize, Okiya correctly deduces they had been to "Welcome Burger" earlier. Okiya makes a strong impression on Sonoko, while Ran thinks "he looks like someone" and she had met him before.

Sonoko then concocts a deduction battle between Okiya and Shinichi to see who can solve the mystery of the paper airplane first. Shinichi and Subaru prove to be equally skilled although neither know they are competing against one another. During the detective showdown, Okiya overhears Sonoko talking about Shinichi's deductions and asks this Shinichi is also the landlord of the house. Ran, thinking of Conan's warning not to talk about Shinichi to Okiya, interrupts Sonoko to say they are consulting one "Kinichi" and that the landlord Shinichi has no special deduction ability. Okiya easily sees through the lie and reveals he had looked around the house but found no personally identifying items. Sonoko and Ran leave to find another paper airplane and Okiya is left to ponder over the landlord.

The deduction battle continues with Okiya and Conan matching each others' deductions perfectly. With the case solved, Okiya suggests that he will leave calling the police up to Ran and Sonoko because they have police acquaintances, revealing he knows something of the backgrounds of the girls and their connections. When the pair leaves, Okiya celebrates the successful resolution of the case with a Sherlock Holmes story and a glass of bourbon.

===Ikkaku rock (Manga: [[Volume 64#Ikkaku Rock Case|664-666]], Anime: [[Ikkaku Rock's Disappearing Fish|542-543]])===

Okiya's next appearance occurs when he comes at the request of Professor Agasa to pick up the Detective Boys who had gone fishing. Haibara is again suspicious of him, but Conan brushes her feelings aside. Okiya stops Haibara from slipping and offers to cook the Detective Boys' fish. When the Detective Boys stop at an island called Ikkaku Rock, Okiya Subaru takes a group photo. The gang stumble into a dead woman who appeared to have gotten lost and died on accident, but Okiya and Conan quickly recognize that she was deliberately abandoned to die. When Inspector [[Jugo Yokomizo]] tried to prevent the Detective Boys from questioning the suspects, Okiya stepped in, pointing out that sometimes a child's perspective can be the hint that unlocks the truth and, "Weren't there a number of cases that were solved as a result of some hint from these children?" revealing he knows about the Detective Boys' many prior successes.<ref name=665p13>Manga Volume 64, File 2, pg 13: "Mackerel, Carp, Sea Bream, Flounder"</ref> Indeed, with such a hint from Mitsuhiko and Haibara, Conan and Okiya simultaneously realize who the culprit is. After they took turns explaining the case, the culprit pulled out a knife and grabbed [[Ayumi Yoshida]] as a hostage. Conan didn't have any gadgets to help him. At that moment, Haibara felt a menacing aura from Okiya, and he slowly approached the criminal, saying he couldn't escape and even if he did, could he bear the pressure and loneliness of hiding in fear of someone uncovering his identity? The provoked criminal removed the knife from Ayumi's neck and lunged at Okiya. In one effortless movement, Okiya knocked the criminal's knife away and took Ayumi from his grasp. Despite his rescue, the malicious pressure Okiya emitted and his words left a strong impression on Haibara who is certain he is one of the Black Organization members.

===A Dangerous Couple (Manga: [[Volume 65#Dangerous Couple Case|680]], Anime: [[A Dangerous Party of Two|557]])===
Later, Haibara, who had gone with Professor Agasa on a trip because she did not want to be alone while Okiya was around, demanded that Conan find some excuse to kick Okiya out of Shinichi's house. She explained to Conan that she thinks Conan is keeping him around and using her as bait in order to spy on him. Conan replies that he thinks Okiya is a good man and as for using Haibara as bait, "I-Idiot, you think I would do that!?"<ref name=680p5>Manga Volume 65, File 6, pg 5: "A Dangerous Couple"</ref>

Conan calls Agasa and finds out he invited Subaru Okiya over to cook because Haibara was out. Agasa says Okiya is a pretty good cook.

===Thirteen Red Shirts Case (Manga: [[Volume 67#Department Store Bomber Case|700-704]], Anime: [[The Crisis Beckoned by the Red Omen|578]]-[[The Red Shaking Target|581]])===

[[Jodie Starling]] visits the [[Setting#Beika Department Store|Beika Department Store]], the origin of [[Scar Akai]]'s cap, to look for clues about him. Okiya follows her there. Subaru Okiya, along with Scar Akai and Conan, is then trapped on one of the department store floors by a bomber demanding to find the sender of thirteen red shirts. Meanwhile the [[Black Organization]] has heard that someone who looks like Akai appeared at the department store. [[Gin]] and [[Vodka]] park outside the department store with the snipers [[Chianti]] and [[Korn]] to wait for Scar Akai.

Back on the bombed floor, Subaru Okiya takes an interest in the red shirts case. He solves the flag semaphore message and deduces it has to do with an incident in the mountains. Okiya then sees Scar Akai in the crowd and ducks away before scar Akai could spot him, and smiles mysteriously. Okiya goes to the windows out front and spies [[Gin]]'s Porsche and [[Chianti]] who has set up in a hotel across the street.

Conan tranquilizes [[Kogoro Mouri]] to begin his deduction show just as Kogoro receives an anonymous text message containing a mostly complete solution to the case from Scar Akai. After the case is over, [[Andre Camel]] reveals to Jodie the Black Organization are waiting outside with a sniper. Jodie rushes after scar Akai to stop him from being killed, but is prevented from reaching him by Okiya who knocks her over.

To prevent Scar Akai from being shot, Conan stirs the crowd up by lying that the store is giving out 10,000 yen gift cards. Okiya confronts Conan, who is surprised to see him, and introduces himself to Kogoro Mouri. He reveals that he was trapped on the bombed floor and tells Conan he was in the area because he visited the [[Scar Akai#Teito Bank Heist|Teito bank]] and followed Conan when he saw Conan enter the Beika Dept store. He leaves Conan with the mysterious quote:

===Communications Code (Manga: [[Volume 72|755]], Anime: [[Emergency Situation 252|623]])===

Okiya comes to rescue Conan and the Detective Boys who had been trapped by kidnappers in a building. Okiya thought they had encountered trouble when he noticed that no lights came on at Agasa's house after dark, and when he went over to inspect, the front door was unlocked, nobody was there, and two suspicious phone calls arrived. Okiya uses a spare pair of Conan's tracking glasses in order to find the Detective Boys, proving he knows about the function of Conan's tracking glasses and that they lock onto the detective badges.<ref name=755p14>Chapter 755 page 14: Communications Code</ref> Conan has never used the tracking glasses in front of Okiya before. Okiya Knocks Out one of the kidnappers, but tells the Detective Boys that the robber fell down the stairs. When Haibara questions why he had been paying so much attention to Agasa's house, Okiya tells her he wanted to give them some extra curry he had made for lunch.

===Ayumi Kidnapping Case (Manga: [[Volume 74|775-776]], Anime: [[The Professor's Video Site|656-657]])===
[[Masumi Sera]] stops [[Genta]] and [[Mitsuhiko]] outside of Agasa's house to ask them if they are acquaintances of Professor Agasa's. The topic of [[Shinichi]] comes up when she talks to the two detective boys about the [[Masumi_Sera#Kogoro_Detective_Agency_Hostage_Crisis_.28Manga_771-774.29|prior hostage case]]. Sera asks who is living in the Kudo house now because she saw the curtains shift slightly. The detective boys tell her that Subaru Okiya has been staying there since his apartment burnt down.

Sera cryptically comments with a smirk on her face, "And here I thought that someone had just settled in without permission...But it seems I was just getting worked up over nothing..." while looking up at where Okiya Subaru is hiding and secretly observing the conversation.

Later, after Genta ruins Agasa's curry, Okiya secretly follows the detective boys on an errand to buy new ingredients. He tails the detective boys rather closely; Haibara, who is wearing a hat, seems determined not to acknowledge his presence. He stops and looks over his shoulder to watch a car that parked on a side street. The car pulls out of sight and Okiya turns away and continues on, but soon enough car reverses back into its former position. Okiya is later seen in the grocery store, and he worriedly watches Conan and Haibara dash out of the grocery store after hearing that Sera saw Haibara's reflection in Agasa's glasses in an online video. Okiya follows the detective boys back and listens into Conan's conversation at Agasa's via an earpiece while watching on the professor's house from one of the Kudo household's upper story windows.

=== Murder at Mouri Detective Agency (Manga: [[Volume 76|798-800]], Anime: [[Detectives' Nocturne|672-674]])===

Okiya appears at Haibara and Agasa's house and goes with them in [[Vehicles#Subaru 360|his car]] to save Conan who had been kidnapped. During the chase, Okiya uses the phrase "Don't make that kind of face", to reassure Haibara that he will definitely catch up to Conan. When he pulls up behind the suspect's car, he leans out the driver's side and puts his hand in his jacket, likely to pull out a handgun to shoot out the suspect's tires. Okiya aborts this plan when [[Tooru Amuro]] pulls up alongside him and they look at one another. Amuro and [[Sera]] successfully stop the kidnapper and Okiya drives away without lingering at the scene.

===Don't make that kind of face (Manga: [[Volume 76|802]], Anime: [[Won't Forgive One Millimeter|675]])===
In chapter 802, Haibara hears the same "Don't make that kind of face" phrase from Conan, causing her to remember both the statement that Okiya made in chapter 800, and Akai making the same statement while under the Dai Moroboshi persona about protecting her sister. After this Haibara begins referring to Okiya using his given name "Subaru".

===Ski trip delay (Manga: [[Volume 77|809-811]], Anime: [[Froth, Steam, and Smoke|684-685]])===
Haibara and Conan are late for a ski trip with professor Agasa and the detective boys because Haibara forgot something at Agasa's house. Unable to rouse the drunk sleeping Kogoro into getting a rental car, Haibara suggests calling Okiya for a ride. Conan is surprised at Haibara's change of heart regarding Okiya. On the way to the ski site, Okiya suggests he might join in because he feels he has been getting out of shape. Haibara directly questions Okiya about why he needs to stay in shape. Okiya comments, "Well, in a way... I ''do'' want to look good for the ladies." A murder case happens, interrupting the trip. After Conan runs off to question the suspects with Takagi, Subaru examines the body and gives his thoughts. Haibara suggests that he is rather knowledgeable about murders. Okiya gently corrects her, saying his interest is derived from his love of Holmes, and that he likes solving puzzles.

While the case suspects are being questioned by the Police, Haibara is waiting outside together with Okiya in front of the Police Headquarters. She mentions that this is "the first time" that she's alone with him. Okiya suggests that they should move to the parking lot and wait inside the car. However, Haibara doesn't seem to like the idea, and sarcastically answers that he can force her to come along with him if that's what he wants. Okiya doesn't do so, because of an unknown promise he made with ''"her"''.

The sky has turned dark. Okiya takes a nap inside his car. Haibara decides to take advantage of this moment and secretly tries to remove his scarf. However, Okiya has waken up and stops her from doing so. He explained: "Beyond here is my area... and not your territory... Adults get cold... They're not outdoor creatures, after all..."

===Yusaku Kudo's Cold Case (Manga: [[Volume 77|812-814]], Anime: TBD)===

Ran, Sonoko, and Sera go to Shinichi's house to find pictures of a ten year old crime scene similar to a case they just stumbled upon earlier. Sera enters the bathroom looking for Conan and encounters Subaru brushing his teeth with his neck uncovered. Sera becomes suspicious of him. She also wonders if he has invited a woman over when she finds a woman's hair tie. While the three girls are trying to solve the case, they decide to call Shinichi, and Conan is obligated to go to the bathroom and take the call. Subaru notices this and realizes he is going to play the Shinichi Kudo role. Rather than disturbing him, Subaru sends a message to Shinichi via Ran, telling him the name "Kumogakure Saizou", a clue to solve the case. After revealing the truth, Conan runs out from the bathroom, but he does not realize that Subaru had been watching him. Subaru points out Conan left his bowtie on his cellphone and then teases him by pretending to address Conan as Shinichi Kudo before suddenly switching topics.

===Cabin Trap (Manga: [[Volume 77|817]], Anime: TBD)===
When Amuro sneaks into the Mouri Detective Agency to illicitly view the material Kogoro's clients have sent him, which includes a video of [[Shiho Miyano]] sent by [[Mitsuhiko]], Amuro notices someone hacking Kogoro's computer. After Amuro notices this, there is a cut to Shinichi Kudo's house showing Okiya sitting by three monitors with a glass of bourbon and an ashtray full of cigarettes.

===Bell Tree Express Mystery (Manga: [[Volume 78|820-824]], Anime: TBD)===

It is revealed that Vermouth and Bourbon are on the train, and that they have located Sherry and notified Gin and Vodka about this. Subaru is seen in a room with a woman who looks like Vermouth, but the top part of her face is hidden by her hat. Haibara receives a text message from Vermouth asking, "Are you ready?" Haibara locks herself in her bathroom and prepares to take the drug, presumably to turn herself into Sherry to protect her alternate identity. However, before she can consume the drug, Subaru enters, states "Just as expected of sisters, I can read all your moves." He is holding up a cell phone as he speaks, "Now, can I have you step this way...into our area?" However Haibara quickly runs past him, trying to escape. Later, Subaru is shown setting an unconscious Sera on the sofa of the train, smiling as she unconsciously mutters the words "Shuu-nii". At the end of chapter 824, Subaru is seen putting on his glasses while observing Vermouth and Bourbon. His eyes are open and his eyes are identical to Shuichi Akai's.

===Delivery Service (Manga: [[Volume 80|843]], Anime: TBD)===
The Detective Boys become trapped in a refrigerated delivery truck with a cat, a dead body, and two murderous workers. Unable to call for help and out of other options, Conan decides to try to get a message to Amuro using the cat and a doctored receipt. The receipt blew away before he could see the message, delaying Amuro who had to search for it. A while later when it appears like the Black Organization agent won't be coming to rescue them, Conan checks the packages for electronics they could try to use and unexpectedly finds a cake intended for Professor Agasa. He changes the address to direct the parcel to Kudo's house knowing that Okiya will deduce the situation and provide help. Okiya then gives the unwitting murderers a package containing a phone to deliver. Amuro finally locates the truck and comes to the rescue, so Okiya's phone is only used to call the police. Okiya watches the rescue unfold from the Kudo house window.

==Relationships analysis==


===Conan Edogawa===
[[Conan]] trusts Okiya for the most part, and they maintain an amicable relationship. Conan easily lends Okiya the keys to his house.<ref name=Neighbor>Manga [[Volume 60]] File 5: The New Neighbor</ref> Conan also trusts Okiya to help in cases that put him in close contact with both [[Ai Haibara]] and him, like switching out the gasoline in a container for water to solve a case,<ref name=Crackle>Manga Volume 61 File 7: Crackle</ref> or calling him to pick up everyone when [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]]’s car broke down.<ref name=Burn>Manga Volume 61 File 5: Burn</ref> Okiya respects Conan and his intelligence and they both can solve cases at about the same level. Conan tells Haibara he is trustworthy because he is a fellow [[Sherlock Holmes]] fan, much to her annoyance. Subaru is one of the few [[List of characters who know Conan's identity|characters who knows Conan is Shinichi]] after confirming [[Conan vs. Double Code Mystery|his earlier suspicions]] by [[Volume_77#Cold_Case|listening to Conan]] make a phone call as Shinichi.

===Hiroshi Agasa===
Okiya and [[Hiroshi Agasa|Agasa]] maintain a good relationship with one another. The professor often asks him for favors, like picking the detective boys up from a fishing trip. Agasa also lets Okiya come over and cook from time to time and he will make Agasa food to return the favor, like stir-fried onions and curry. Agasa also seems well informed about when Okiya has free time and is available for favors or when he is on the road.

===Ai Haibara===
[[Ai Haibara]] doesn't trust Okiya because he gives her the chills which she only gets from those who have been in the Black Organization. She hides from him behind Conan when they meet in person and avoids being alone in Agasa's house when he is around. On his part, Okiya is kind to Haibara and seems to look out for her.

Haibara's opinion changes, however, in File 800 after Okiya consoles her when Conan is being abducted by a culprit in a crime. It is revealed afterwards that this is because what he said was similar to what Shuichi Akai had once told her when he was the lover of Haibara's sister, [[Akemi Miyano]]. Because of this, Haibara gains trust in Okiya and starts calling him by his name.<ref> Chapters 800-803:When Objects Collide </ref>

===Tooru Amuro===
They have not directly met, though Okiya has seen Tooru Amuro many times. In most instances, Okiya is the one to notice Amuro but avoids Amuro seeing him for some reason. During the thirteen red shirts case, both Okiya and Amuro (as [[Scar Akai]]) are present with the hostages. When Okiya is about to send his deductions about the bomber's identity to Kogoro's phone, He sees Amuro, and before Amuro can see him, disappears from the area. During the Conan Edogawa kidnapping case, Subaru leans out the door to shoot at the tires of the car Conan's in, but Amuro's car passes by him, prompting Okiya to close the door to avoid Amuro. At the end of the Bell Train Mystery arc, Okiya is shown observing Amuro and Vermouth from a distance with a smirk, opening one of his eyes which looks like Akai's and giving a strong hint that he is Akai. If it is true then based on what has been said about Akai and Amuro's relation, it's likely he sees Amuro as an enemy, though not to the extent that Amuro views him.

*Okiya knew about Conan's tracking glasses and the detective badges.<ref name=X>Chapter 755 page 14: Communications Code</ref> Conan has never used the tracking glasses in front of Okiya before. Bourbon or a third party would not be privy to Conan's gadgets. The mechanism to operate Conan's glasses isn't obvious, so only someone who knows about their existence beforehand could recognize the glasses at Agasa's and figure out how to activate the tracking function. Shuichi Akai could have heard about the glasses in several ways. The first source is when [[James Black]] was kidnapped while he had [[Ayumi Yoshida|Ayumi]]'s detective badge. Conan used the badge to track down James Black. James was waiting to meet with Akai before he was kidnapped and drove away with Akai after he was rescued. Akai could have also heard about the tracking function from Jodie when Conan chased after Kir to prevent an assassination. Finally, Akai may also know about them from when Haibara borrowed the glasses to find Conan at the shipping yards at the climax of the Vermouth arc. He was present at the time and would have seen Haibara wearing them even though she has never worn glasses when Akai had seen her previously.
